So it's about time more people started seeing what I am seeing. I got my friend Matt to watch Serenity yesterday. He has already bought the DVD! He is on his way tomorrow after payday to get the Firefly episodes. It's a proud day for me and I hope he will be a loyal browncoat to help promote this wonderful world.

I will close my eyes and my heart, and become a stone

Today I saw "Objects in Space" again. Only a few days ago, I was raving about the grand act of selflessness of Simon, who was willing to give up everything for his helpless little sister. But does, in the end, not River do exactly the same? She's willing to go with the bounty hunter. and forsake all her sense of safety and protection, just so she can unburden her brother and the crew. A tear-jerker? Oh, I flowed me a river alright (pun intended). But tonight I found myself crying from so deep within; and then another time, as I realized why. Because I find myself so lacking in humanity. :( I find my soul weeping, as I know I have the keen ability to see Love, and recognize it for what it is, and, with it, the painful astuteness of knowing I am wanting in humanity. "Love seeketh not itself to please, Nor for itself hath any care, But for another gives its ease, And builds a heaven in hell's despair." River, I wish I were the human you are. I wish I were that noble, that selfless, that willing to sacrifice self. I am not even half that. Onboard the FireFly, I hear myself thinking: I'm an insect who dreamed he was a man and loved it. But now the dream is over. Xiao mei-mei, I could not even love you properly, even if you really were my little sister; how sad is that? :( Wo xiang mei er, mei xin, bian shitou.

My food is problematic
Wednesday, 01 February 2006 13:26:59

It sure is. I have a dentist appointment today; unpleasant tooth-ache (is there any other kind, I wonder?). Eating hurts like, well, that special hell. :) Though it affords me a good -- albeit ostentatiously obvious -- excuse to bring River into it again, lol. It was a delightful scene in which she said that (is there any other kind, I wonder?). And they want to stick her in those nasty fanfics! *shudder* Also, I made the mistake of posting in the Fruity Oaty Bars thread. And now I cannot get that jingle out of my head, either! At any rate, I'm banking real money on that tooth-ache being gone tomorrow. If I'm wrong, you best shoot me now... Or, we could talk more. :)

The Return of Soul and Werzbowski...
Wednesday, 01 February 2006 15:45:31

Well, I'm here to make an announcement. Both Werzbowski and I have been absent from the world of Firefly fanfic for quite a while, despite our ongoing tales including the crew of Serenity, as well as our own original characters Soul and 'Ski, and the crews of Destiny and Pandora. You see, like a lot of fanfic writers, the BDM, as wonderful as it is, threw us for a loop, and turned our storylines into AU. Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing, and many writers have continued their own stories as if the events of the BDM never occurred. However, for us, our muse's both decided to take vacations. So we were stuck with stories that we could no longer bring to their proper endings for the simple fact that we couldn't get the events of the BDM out of our heads! But try as we might, we just couldn't give up on Soul and Werzbowski, and their roles in the Firefly 'verse, so we came to a solution: re-introduce them both together, in a story that takes the events of the BDM and tells a new story beyond the movie. We just couldn’t let them go, and giving up writing about this ‘verse was not an option. So watch the Blue Sun room for a collaborative effort between Werzbowski and myself as Soul and ‘Ski return!

GOING TO GRAND SLAM 2006
Wednesday, 01 February 2006 15:58:54

Oh, yes, my pretties I have purchased my tickets and will be meeting the wonderful actors of Firefly/Serenity... On 11 March 2006 at Grand Slam 2006... Nathan Fillion (yum! ), Summer Glau (yeah! ), and Morena Baccarin(who my son swindled a photo op out of my for..ah, crazy kid. ) Sigh...now to actually make it through LA trafic without getting lost or killed...LOL I'm not joking...I am directionally challenged...it is like a sickness with me...I couldn't even find my way in the town I was born in and lived in for more than 30 years. As to the getting killed thing...have you ever driven in California? I went to Anaheim from where I live...map quest said it was like two hours...well driving through LA on the highway caused it to be six freakin' hours! All that closed in together time with the husband nearly sent me stark raving made...you almost got to see us on the 11 o'clock news...Woman shoves husband out of moving car and driverless vehicle spins out of control...But I refrained myself. I don't care if I get lost now...I ain't driving with my husband ever...ever again. The man is a freakin' speed demon unless I want to get some where and then it is a freakin' sunday drive. He will not screw with my wonderful Firefly weekend. SID

To be a fanboy...
Wednesday, 01 February 2006 16:38:15

The excitement, the sweaty palms, the insomnia!! And that’s all before you actually get to the convention… Once you get there however, it seems like everything will be ok, that the anticipation and the excitement may have been a little more in your head than anything else. Then you see them; the people that you’ve been waiting to see for the last 2 months, the people that made the show worth watching. It all comes flooding back tenfold!!! You’re suddenly a nervous as a schoolgirl just looking at these people! All the clever things that you had planned on saying with a slick smile are now a puddle on the floor of your brainpan. You suddenly find yourself in line along with a hundred other sweaty, heavy breathing nerds waiting for your chance to make a complete and utter fool of yourself for the single chance to get an autograph and a quick word in with that person of reverence. You get to the front of the line and say, “How’s it going?”… that went well, try to say something else, you think to yourself. You try again for your name, but nothing comes out! You’re now trapped in the fanboy mode. There is no chance of a graceful output once you’ve hit this point, so you just do the best you can and try to scoop up a few words from the thought puddle on the floor. Turn and take your picture, then walk away so the next person can have their turn… Ahh, to be a fanboy…:banghead: It’s not the life that most want, but for me it’s just the way that things go it seems. I went to the FX Show in Orlando this last weekend with three of my friends. My main reason for going was to get a few autographs from two of the characters from the TV show Firefly and movie Serenity (you may have guessed as this is a Firefly fan site...). It just so happened that two of my favorite characters from the show were there that day… Alan Tudyk and Summer Glau. Alan Tudyk is one of my favorite actors. I don’t think that he gets near the recognition that he deserves, but even so, he was one of the nicest guys… Even with my thought puddle visibly apparent, he was nice enough to carry on without me and sign my Firefly DVD box. I did get a couple of pictures though… it was great. Summer Glau was exceptional. She is one of the most beautiful women that I think I’ve ever seen. The grace she exudes and the ability to kick someone’s ass is just so friggin cool… lol. I, unfortunately, had the same reaction when it came time to her as I did when I went through Alan Tudyk’s line… The thought puddle was only intensified because I turn into a babbling idiot around girls still… don’t know why, just do. I did manage to get my name out and that I did enjoy her work, but it just wasn’t what I wanted to say. Perhaps the next time that we meet, I’ll have learned a bit more nerve. We all had our pictures taken with the stars and contemplated spending a few more dollars to get more, but I need to pay bills, so I decided that I got the ones that I really wanted and that no more were really needed. I got pictures of the guys with a few others… David Carradine looked like he was going to die just sitting there across from us… kinda creepy, like he had no emotion left to give. Also got the picture of Corin Nemic’s empty chair as we hadn’t been able to see him the whole day. Overall I’d say that it was a good day and that I got to see some of the people that have had some influence on my life of recent, and I was able to get pictures with them all, and even some others that were just a little funny. So in summary to this babbling blog, to be a fanboy is a sad existence. It shows that I really need to suck it up and stop acting like an idiot when I meet someone that I’ve really wanted to talk to is sitting two and a half feet away from me. It also shows me that I need to learn how to talk to women, because it’s just really sad that I just about have liquid brain leaking out of my ears from just trying to talk to one. Granted it was Summer Glau and I do tend to be better with some others, but I really wanted smooth Andy to be there… smooth Andy

Nathan Fillion in Cartoons??
Wednesday, 01 February 2006 18:16:16

I like watching Justice League and I came across something interesting. In Justice League, Season 5, Episode 7, Nathan Fillion is in it!!! He's the voice actor of a cowboy called "Vigilante'" and he weilds a nice pair of six-shooters. Very reminiscent of Firefly I thought.... Anyways heads up on that. Was good to hear his cowboy twang again...

New Jayne video
Wednesday, 01 February 2006 20:05:29

And now for something completely different. As in my fourth Firefly music video, which focuses on Jayne. I was shooting for a look that matched the character - very abrupt, kind of goofy, lots of action. It's definitely different... much like Jayne. It's set to Born Too Slow by The Crystal Method and has footage from every episode, but heavy on Ariel. Two sizes 856x480 - 26.4MB WMV

Foiled yet again!
Wednesday, 01 February 2006 23:21:29

Well, after countless attempts at contacting the cast/Joss by snail mail, I have nothing to show for it. All of it gets "returned to sender." So, I've pretty much given up on the postal system to talk to the cast. So, I'm pleading with you, begging all of you to enlighten me. Does anyone know the email addresses to any of the cast members or Joss? You would have my undying gratitude. You can email me at kieran121@hotmail.com. Well, here's hoping that I can, somehow, say hello to the beloved BDH's. Thanks much!

I finished the intro for the tango vid (amazing how you can work on a vid for 4 hours or so and end up with a 30 sec piece of it). Putting the audio bits in at exactly the right spot is a bit tricky. That's what they have those clapperboards for in the movies, if you don't have something like this, putting the audio track in exactly the right place is almost impossible. I am pretty satisfied with the outcome so far. Actually I skipped my chorus rehearsal tonight to be able to keep working on the vid. I can't do this too often. I sing in a Musical ensemble, but we are between production at the moment, so I figure I was not missed too much. Live365 had some problems today, so MisterUniverse was offline (*cough* so much for no one can stop the signal ), but now the radio is up and running again.

Finally, going to university pays off
Thursday, 02 February 2006 01:48:05

During every semester this company, or group I'm not really sure what they are, tour around the universities selling posters and stuff so students can plaster their walls. I've walked through their rows of posters six times so far since starting university but nothing's really caught my eye, but that's mostly because there's nothing really good. It boggles me that pictures of Orlando Bloom can sell out every year but there's no love for any of the Joss shows. Except there was today! I was sort of hoping they would have something Serenity related so I was walking madly up and down the aisles looking for any hint of blue. I didn't see any mainly because they weren't stocking any of the blue North American posters. However, they had the U.K. one, the one with deadly looking River, and it just floored me. Three years of browsing through crap and here's something worth buying. My brain sort of stalled in that moment of recognition and I think my heart skipped a beat. And then my thought patterns turned into: "Okay, gotta find an order form, gotta find an order form. Damn, where's a pencil. Okay, found a form and a pencil. What's the order number? H227. Author. Cinema? Title. Serenity! Price. $9.00, yay that's cheap! Wait. I only have five dollars in my wallet. Check the change, check the change. Damn, only two dollars worth of change. Okay, come back tomorrow, tomorrow." I hope they haven't sold out. They've been on campus since Monday and for all I know there are hundreds of Browncoats on campus and they've bought every copy. But I doubt it. I really want this poster. When I buy it, I'll have a complete set: one Buffy poster, one Angel, and then one Firefly/Serenity. Who says nothing good ever happens at university?

On Inara...
Thursday, 02 February 2006 01:58:40

I've been reading some theories about Inara, and theories about Inara's relationship, and due to the fact I don't -wanna- click that link that says "Inara Stuffs", I'm just gonna post it here. So, let us commence. Inara - whore...or not? I vote not. Yeah, she gets paid and then she spreads her legs, but she takes no pleasure in it. It's her career to make other people happy, not herself. She's far too classy and trained to be even considered a whore anyhow. It's the warmth, the smile, those eyes. She's an amazing woman. Though I personally don't think she's ever had a "true" relationship, or even a "true" kiss that wasn't paid for. Possibly why she's so scared of letting it go further with Mal, not to mention she'd give up her career, everything she'd worked for years to attain, what defines her... On to the next ramble. Inara - mysterious past, what is it? I seriously doubt she was kicked out of House Madrassa 'cause of politics, though it might be a possibility. Inara did keep in contact with Nandi when the Guild told her not to. Or it could have been her choice. She got sick and tired of staying in the same place, since she'd been there for so long. Seeing the same people, maybe some she didn't particularly like. Maybe she was a slight outcast. Being friends with Nandi, who's the definition of a Companion outcast, hints towards that. And on to the next - ommggg what's in the syringe? I don't know, but whenever Joss decides to tell us, I'll pretend I knew all along. Or I might beg Morena. Whichever. Though it might be the whole "Whoever Has Sex With Me DIES" thing that happens in Dead or Alive, because far as we know, Atherton hasn't died lately...so, she injects herself, then gets raped (almost raped?) a lot, and then BOOM! Die. And the last, which would be my famous Mal/Inara rant. So, Mal and Inara. Will they -ever- wake up and smell the coffee? Or maybe they already smelled the coffee, but like tea, or somethin'. It is kind of tragic, the obstacles they face. For Inara, she'd have to give up everything she's worked for for a man who has more issues then I have hairs on my head, livin' on a not exactly fancy spaceship. For Mal, the fact that Inara is a whore, that men pay to have sex with her. He seems to not have a problem with Nandi being a whore, but he loves Inara, and then it is a problem. Oh my God, if you took the time to read this, I'm sorry... Anyways, that's alllll. Bye-ee.

battlestar galactica
Thursday, 02 February 2006 08:04:42

i *love* battlestar galactica man! the new one, obviously. i have a hardcore crush on starbuck. we've been doing the series dvds straight through, since i didn't get into it until after someone on this site posted a pic of what looks to be a firefly-class ship flying over what could have been caprica. i was immediately inexorably in love after the first hour of the miniseries. so... i've asked this before and no one answered: who'd win in a fight? starbuck or jayne?

three minute blog
Thursday, 02 February 2006 14:19:08

to any one reading this: three minutes before i go to class, I just want to say that it really was a shame that the SHOW was cancelled becuase, for one thing, its driving me nuts how no serious motive was actually established for Book being on the ship after the pilot. Ya know? I mean, his transport bill to Mal and Co. is, pardon the pun, astronomical. But, we all know that Whedon never had time to get around to tying up these loose ends. And its driving me mad. madness. Hey snowboard grrl, are you reading this? Are you out there somewheres on the big mountains? Leave a message, eh? timetogo

Today, we watch Out of Gas
Thursday, 02 February 2006 17:01:08

Well, the Friday Firefly lunchtime series at my place of work is going quite well. I started it to create buzz for the Serenity DVD release, and I think I sold a few copies through demonstration of Joss/BDH wonderful-ness. I've made the series into quite a production, sending out emails on Monday previewing what's showing that week. I put in the episode description, quotes and a screenshot. Then on Friday morning I send out a reminder, with a different quote and screenshot. It's all about that advertising, dontcha know. I've been having a ton of fun with it, and enjoy talking to more people about FF. We're up to OoG today, even though it's Thursday. We had to move since the conference room was needed for something work-related tomorrow. Sheesh. We have 10 regulars coming to the shows. That ratio isn't bad from a company of 50 souls. I make popcorn. We crack wise, no one wants me to skip the theme song segment, one fellow has a crush on Inara, the other Kaylee. We've started emailing each other silly FF related comments. It's been rewarding and contagious and, well, Firefly. Also, it's a beautiful day today in Texas. There isn't a cloud in the sky, shirtsleeve weather, but with a fresh wind. My office is like Stonehenge -- during the winter solstice time, sun beams directly across my desk (in the summer, not so much). On to Ariel, War Stories, and Trash, my favorite run of episodes. The best balm to the wound of no more FF (yet, anyway) is sharing it with friends. Yes? ----------------------- Friday Update Thanks for all the kind words and additional ideas, Capella, Averardas! Hello again, FollowMal. You helped me back when my dream to host FF was in the planning stages. Thank you again for the support and inspiration. You folks are great. ----------------------- Here's the photo for the BDTY site to commemorate the group of us who enjoyed Firefly and Serenity.

Firefly Tribute Album at WonderCon
Thursday, 02 February 2006 18:01:08

Well, in about two weeks, On the Drift, our album of music inspired by Firefly and Serenity, will be available online, but folks going to WonderCon in San Diego can pick up their copies at the Browncoat table. The CDs arrived just the other day, and I've sent out the pre-orders. It's really amazing to see something that's been nebulous for so long take on physical form. (Its physical form is a thousand CDs sitting in my den . . . ) I'll be sure to post here as soon as online sales are a reality.

How to upset your friends
Thursday, 02 February 2006 18:16:33

*MOVIE SPOILER BELOW* I'm slightly nervous now. I recently lent my spare FF boxset to a work colleague. He watched the whole thing in two days, loved it, now he wants to see the BDM when it's released on Feb 27. All shiny so far. Here's the problem - his favourite character is Wash. Thinks he's a comic genius, best thing in the show. Oh no! Now I'm thinking he's going to come away hating the BDM 'cause Wash gets Whedonized. :crap: What should I do - warn him in advance that not everybody makes it, or what? Anyway, back to the black. Payin' work to be done.

Madness?
Thursday, 02 February 2006 19:51:46

River, in a good way, is totally off the chart. She can kill with her brain, yet melts me with a look! It's just... everything. The subtle things, like walking bare-foots, the right-after "Am I talking to Miranda now?" look. Or the, really underrated, "The Wonder Of It All" gaze, when she floats outside the ship in a space-suit. Or the "I Am Finally Home" smile at the end of the series. -- taking a deep breath -- River, I tell you, has me frantically roam every particle of my being, scavenging for scrapes of decency, just so I can hand them to her! Her vulnerabilty is so disarming. It makes mountains crumble, and leaves entire armies in dust! I always want to reach out to her, right through the walls of reality. Honestly, I find that I am constantly projecting myself into the scene, conjuring up cute ways in which I, as fictional extra, or member of the crew, can show her selfless affection. Could be as simple as when she peels the paper off some food cans. Then I imagine myself walking over to her, gently putting my hand on her shoulder, asking: "Hey, little worm, are you okay?" Or I make up these situation where I, contrary to the others, of course, do something unexpectedly special for her. Like imagening she's playing with that gun, like in Object in Space, and she accidentally shoots me, the captain. And then, when I'm lying there in the infirmary, unconscious, they lock her up again. And how I then finally wake up, and go visit her. And how she's then all confused, and scared, and thinks I will now throw her off my boat, for sure. But how, in one huge climactic moment, I then approach her and ... just hug her tight. And how she then knows I will always love her. ... Sigh. Things like that. :)

just checking if something works...

Progress
Friday, 03 February 2006 00:35:16

I was off work today and spend a lot of time editing the tango vid again. It is now about 3/4 done, so I hope to finish it tomorrow. I had a hard time with the soundfiles. The video software cannot cut them exactly to the frame when they are in mp3 format (probably because of the compression, I don't know if audio compression uses something like key frames, but that would explain some of my trouble). I downloaded the lame encoder (another amazingly great open source initiative...

2X2
My own T-Shirts....
Friday, 03 February 2006 01:51:10

I went and bought some Silk Screening Textile Inks the other day and decided to give silk screening a try... I ended up buying a sheer curtain to use as the screen, and made the frame out of a 2x2 (snicker) that I had laying around. I bought a squeegee thingy at the dollar store, and some white glue, and I was in business.... So far, I've made two shirts... I did a TG Freight shirt, using a method where you trace the image on the screen, and then fill in the areas you don't want to print with the white glue... this resulted in some very imprecise lines that were not crisp enough for the letters and symbols unfortunately, but it's passabel for my first attempt. The second shirt I did is of a sihouette of Serenity in black, with the chinese characters for "serenity" in red over top.. I really like the design and this time I used a paper stencil which gave me much much more crisp lines. Since this was a two colour silk screen, I had to cut out two stencils, one for the ship, with the space for the characters left un printed, and then one for just the characters... unfortunately, I wasn't able to cut them out exactly perfect, so they didn't 100% match up, but I still think it looks pretty cool... I'll post some pictures as soon as I get them off the camera... I must say it's totally addictive... I have plans for alll sort of Serenity/Firely t-shirts... Naturally, I'll have to do a Blue Sun one ;o) It's extremely easy, and the results are quite acceptable.. I'm having a blast!

Serenity on Vu (w/bonus)
Friday, 03 February 2006 04:16:42

So I was flipping through the satellite programming guide and, as usual not paying any attention to the pay per view options, when I see something that catches my eye. Could it be? Yep, Serenity is on Vu! "An action-packed thriler! A brother and sister are both on the run from a corrupt alliance." Also comes with a bonus: the 'On the Set' featurette. I don't think that was on the North American DVD. Now I have to decide if it's worth the $3.99 or whatever it is. It must be a new addition - I haven't seen any adds for it and Bell tends to advertise its pay per view stuff pretty heavily. Just nice to see the movie out there.

Tax Refund Rampage, Part Two
Friday, 03 February 2006 15:10:38

Huzzah! Got the remainder of my tax refund deposited into my account when I got home from work this morning. Now, I've promised to try and save a sizeable chunk of it this time so I won't be kicking myself three or four months down the road when the money starts getting tight again. At the same time, however, I consider my tax with-holdings to be a little savings account that I only get to access once a year. An Alliance-mandated piggy bank, if you will. So, now that I've broken my little piggy for the year, it's only fitting that I have a little bit of fun with it before handing the remainder off to the bank to be squandered. So... already have the Firefly boxed set, and the BDM. That goes without saying. And today I've just come back from amazon.com and ordered both soundtracks (I know, you can't beat the tv show soundtrack, but there's a number of scores that I really liked from the movie, too. Lacked some of the western stuff, but still pretty gorram good, really.) Also picked up the Visual Companion and Finding Serenity (I always need good bath-room reading and I can't go ro sleep without a good book. I've been working through David Drakes Lord of the Isles books, but lately I've really been yearning for some more Firefly during my quality time atop the porcelain god.) Almost thought about picking up the action figures, but... well, Mal looks kinda wonky, and I know any money I put into the Firefly franchise helps the cause, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. There just don't seem to be the amount of love put into those that I've come to associate with our beloved 'verse. Also, almost picked up the Serenity graphic novel while I was at amazon, but I remember seeing out here about the signed copies of the comic by the cast. So I might hold out for that. Nice autographed edition of one of the issues might round things out nicely, and I can always pick up the TPB later on. (Little disappointed that my local Schuler's wasn't carrying it... let's just say it's probably good the staff there don't know much conversational chinese. ;) So I just gotta decide who's autograph I really want the most, and hope that that one's still in stock. Probably sleep on that one. cause it's a tought choice, I have trouble picking a favorite character anyways, and I can't really justify getting a whole set of signed editions... though that'd be especially shiny. Also, too lazy to check back on the site right now, but I know I've seen a Blue Sun coffee mug one of the sites, and I just HAVE to have one of those. Support the fellow browncoats and all. No point here. Just very much excited to finally round out my collection. Shiny shiny day.

... and then another two and a half months without a post or log entry because ... well, I guess everything's just going too well. I figured it out. I need things to complain about. I was posting like crazy last year because I was saddled with a crappy job and the stress of my wife being pregnant with our first child. Now, I've got a job I absolutely love, a no-longer-pregnant wife and a healthy 7-month old boy. Everything is (knock on wood) going so well that I have nothing to complain about too much, therefore rendering this site's log system a little less useful to me. I've never been too good at writing logs about things that are going well in my life. That, plus I got in a big rut on my fanfic and there's no new Firefly-related stuff on the horizon so ... Wait. I can complain about that.

The Ballad Of Rel
Saturday, 04 February 2006 00:57:52

Over on another board somewhere, members have been challenged to describe other members in a fun and entertaining fashion. So, courtesty of TheFarscapeLounge member Ian, I give you... The Ballad Of Rel. Rel, the man they call Rel He's been to Hyde Park And he's been to MK To see all his friends And to wish them good day Our love for him now Is hard to dispell The God of Trillian The man they call Rel Our Rel saw the dealers' wares shinin' He saw the dealers' big swords And he saw there Anduril hangin' So with the dealers he exchanged words So he said "how much for that one up there?" They said "Oooh, it's quite a bit" But Rel swallowed hard And pulled out his card At his home now that sword does sit Essential for playing frisball - He owns the TFL frisbee Frisball can be a strange game Maybe even frightnin' to see Our love for him now Is hard to dispell The God of Trillian The man they call Rel Now here is what separates true fans From common folk like you and I The man they call Rel He got on the bell To meet the stars of Firefly He's met up with Summer Glau He's met up with Jewel Staite The man they called Rel Would go right through hell For Serenity is his true fate He wore a black coat But his coat now is brown From Tormented Space He's moved to Jaynestown He often says "shiny" Though he used to say "frell" The God of Trillian The man they call Rel

Everybody dies alone
Saturday, 04 February 2006 01:25:48

I feel so lonely, today. :( I check the board often; write the occasional post, too. But I feel so lost today. I try and be quasi-funny, crack a few chicken jokes, grab a few laughs here and there. But, underneath, I really just want to talk about River. But I fear people will soon grow tired of it. And I do, of course, not want to come off too overtly psychotic. Yeah, there's that. :) Seriously, though, I am not mentally disturbed. Although I guess that statement is as true as it is untrue. Addiction, I reckon, has much in common with music. There are these neural pathways being formed, that kinda 'train' your brain to expect certain patterns. And in the absence thereof, well, ... you probably feel the tug yourself. I miss River. How crazy is that? It's true, though. There's this sweetheart called River. "Little one" is the name Mal did give'er. She makes me cry. Don't ask for a why. I'm simply saying: I miss her. That's not much of a poem, either, is it? :( I feel so, so sad today. "tai nanguo" (= too sad) indeed.

Why Firefly Matters
Saturday, 04 February 2006 02:34:23

Firefly does for Science Fiction what Raiders of the Lost Ark did for archeology. Interest, and wonder, and hope... and all this while entertaining us. It brings different folks from all walks together for a common purpose. Firefly is intelligent, funny and, quite honestly, some of the most creative film work we've ever seen (in this 'verse or the next.) Every ship is an engineers dream and the humor is, well, my kind of funny. The characters are genuine and lovable and the stories are tight, full of surprise, and unlike any ever created before. The psychotic psychic is a stroke of genius and who knows where that River would eventually flow (given half the chance - or a second season.) The honorable criminal, while done before, has never been depicted as such a likable character in the persona of Mal Reynolds. And the other characters are more than interesting. In short, Firefly matters because it truly entertains.

saturday 2/4/6 New Stuff
Saturday, 04 February 2006 11:32:52

Had to get a new computer to go with the scanner. I was using an HP pavillion media center which totally gave up the ghost thursday.Just now got my settings back to where they were this morning. Noticed a lot of new artists hitting the blue sun room. And some, dare I say it, inspired by myownself. Feels wierd to be an influence. But anything firefly/serenity is good. The signal must continue.. Having a tough time keeping the comicstrip to a daily schedule. RL tends to interfere and these things take forever to do...Takes me about six hours to do a strip.. Oh, well. That's all for now..

Screensaver
Saturday, 04 February 2006 18:39:57

Actually I did not want to spend an entire day in front of the computer again, so I had planned to do no video editing today. I wanted to go to the local library (yeah, you know, those places where they have all those oldfashion things called books, with the many pages and stuff...) and check out some novels or the like. But the weather was awful and the deskchair suddenly seemed a very comfortable place after all. Since I did not want to go back to video editing right away, I decided to try out something new. I always wanted to do a screensaver, but had no idea how to do that. I found a shareware tool that works decently in the trial version with the only pay-off that it puts in a little commercial text in the screensaver. Apart from that it did everything I wanted (well almost) and I am quite happy with the result. If you live in a Windows world and want to give it a try, you can download it from my homepage (I put it under "FanVideos", since it is at least related).

The beginning.
Saturday, 04 February 2006 22:39:25

Yes, it all started with my dad. My obsession was begun, fueled and fed by him. Come December of 2005, I was shopping for Christmas gifts. I had not yet purchased one for him and knew that Serenity was coming out on DVD just before Christmas. I had never seen this movie, which is odd because I make a point to go see new sci-fi movies first-run. But knew that he had seen it and enjoyed it and so I had planned on picking it up at Walmart for their cheap first-week price of under $15. The Sunday before the DVD release, he calls me up. Dad: "You know, Serenity comes out on video on Tuesday. That'd be a nice gift for Christmas." DAMNIT! Me: "Does it really, Dad? Yeah, I think I noticed that. I'll mention it to the others. I think I got you something already." Blatant lie. He ALWAYS does either this or goes and buys himself what you were gonna get him. Later... Mom: "Oh, good. You got him Serenity. I picked him up Firefly." Me: "Firefly? What's that?" Mom: "You know, the series that Serenity was based on." You must realize how strange a conversation this second one is. I'm a regular fan of IMDB, a second generation Sci-fi fan (Mom is a Trekkie, I a Trekker and Star Wars Geek), and if I don't see something new, my husband tells me because he's as big a geek as me though he tries to hide it. Heck, I even own a few tapes of Blake's 7! I've seen Doctor Who uncounted times, and could admit to stealing Mom's fanzines. You know, the PAPER ones! Flashback to 2002. It was not a good year. I had a very severe personal loss that summer and I spent over a year abandoning most relationships, hobbies, and even let my career slide a bit. Come September, I was fighting to become gainfully employed once more and we were making plans to move in with the 'rents to purchase a house. Combined with deep depression, it did not bode well for watching any television. December things were finally picking back up a little and I began to feel like a real person again. But alas, Firefly was already gone. But how could I have missed it? All these years passed, and I had not even heard of Browncoats or of Firefly in passing. Not a whisper, although my dad claims he mentioned it to me. Perhaps it was because it was on Fox and had a Western feel to it. Perhaps it was because I assumed it was of the vampire persuasion because of Joss' Buffy and Angel (not a fan, sorry :( ). Who knows. Flash forward to post-Christmas 2005. Me: "Dad, mind if I borrow your Serenity and Firefly?" Dad: "Sure, go ahead." And that was all it took. I shall soon be shopping for my own Browncoat to wear.

I can win this!
Sunday, 05 February 2006 04:37:23

Oh man! I just saw the "This is My Sister" Fan Vid (schmacky), and now I'm sobbing, and there's no power in the 'verse that can stop me. :( I am biting my lips in anguish; I shatter completely. I am in pain, and yet I embrace this pain as if it were my very mother. As if it were my little sister, I should say, of course; but I have no stomach for clever repartee now. My darling River! You trigger me in a way that makes a dilettante of the Fruity Oaty Bar. Oh, that I could really melt like that! to just fade away, and merge with the Serenity boat itself, and be there for my River in the realest, most literal possible sense! O, I would not just adore the ground she walks on; instead, the ground she'd be walking on would be me! And I would so gently hold her afloat, always there, always supportive, never intrusive, ever watching over her. And then, at night, I would dim all the lights for her, and steer her safely through the dark. And should I ever see her scared, cropped up against her bed, "2x2, hands of blue," I'd hum gently back: "We'll take care of each other. I'll knit for you." * back to crying * -- pausing -- Oh man, I could do a whole fanfic about this! teehee. And you know I'm not too fond of a "ship" involving River. But this one gives a whole new meaning to the term, doesn't it? :)

the jayne vs. starbuck question
Sunday, 05 February 2006 05:58:40

as a followup to my "who would win a fight, starbuck or jayne?" question, i have to say that all y'all who commented were right. (i am, of course, referring to the new battlestar galactica and not the old one.) starbuck and jayne probably wouldn't fight. they'd smoke cigars, play cards, compare guns or something and then make out. lucky starbuck. :P (and for that matter, lucky jayne. i have a crush on starbuck, in case you were wondering.)

What do you think other browncoat womenfolk?
Sunday, 05 February 2006 06:58:38

This is my soap box, I just wanted advice/comments from the other firefly women. Here's the thing. I am 22, 23 next month and it's like Firefly/Serenity opened up this emotional well in me. Due to a very 'colorful' childhood, I have ended up somewhat jaded. I have never considered myself an emotional person by any means, but I am somewhat of a bottler. Before the 'verse affected me so strongly, the number of times I had really really cried was minimal. However, now...well geez..I just watched Rudy again and I'm bawling like a little baby. It seems that I get really emotional now, at everything... forgive the cheese factor, but everything seems to hit me more poinantly... sadder things are sadder to me, heart string moments just make me tear up at a moments notice. And no, guys, it's not just one week out of the month lol. So then, what's the deal with me, am I just totally girlified and emotional now? This is me stepping down off the soap box now.

My First Converts...
Sunday, 05 February 2006 11:20:16

Had an especially shiny day today for my day off. Looks like some of my plans are coming to fruition rather nicely and infected a few more people with an obsession of all things Firefly. So if things go how they look, I may have finally earned my browncoat ;p I was originally dissapointed with my lack of success at trying to turn my friends into fans. My brother is the one who ruttin' rented Serenity in the first place, and he's a beige-coat if I ever saw one. Hasn't even seen more than a few episode of the series, and he frelling lives with me, gorramit! However, I think I've hit on a winning plan to converting people now, cause this couldn't have gone better. Takes a bit of time, but I think that helped in this matter. For me, it was all about not seeming too overt and shoving it down people's throats. Here's the story, maybe it'll prove useful to others. My sister's boyfriend (John) happens to be a good friend of mine. (We'd better get along, too, cause well... like I said, he's my sister's boyfriend. Otherwise he'd landing in a whole heap of trouble ;) Spend alot of my days off over at their place, and they happen to be pretty big movie fans. So, step one: We trade off movies every once in awhile anyway. Cancelled series can sort of bring a stigmata with them. (If they didn't last what's the point, is the way alot of people seem to view it.) So, I figured I'd start them out with the movie. I lent them my copy of Serenity, which wasn't anything out of the ordinary. However, I also lent them my first disk of the boxed set, and told them to watch the pilot first so they'd have a better idea of who was who and such. They seemed to like it, no big deal. I was careful not to launch into fanboy mode a few days later when we were talking about it. I just made sure they understood the finer points of what made it so good, and tried to plant some seeds for later on. Stuff like "Yeah, the movie was good, but I really liked the series." They liked all the banter and such from the movie so I made sure to talk that up as well. (We all have a running thing about the Star Wars movies and how that's what we really felt was left out in the prequels was all the great dialoque between Han, Luke, and Leia.) So, seeds firmly planted in their heads, I figured I'd let them stew for about a week or so. (Also cunningly managed to 'forget' to take disk one of the series back with me, so they could watch through The Train Job and Bushwhacked.) So phase two then was all about trying to play it cool. They'd seen three episodes now plus the BDM. They thought it was good, but weren't exactly jumping on the bandwagon, so to speak. This part was all about planting seeds. The next week or so, I'd try to casually insert some conversation about Firefly and how I have to watch an episode every day before I go to sleep and such. Had to play this very cool, as too much would turn them off. The point was to get them to wonder. If this show was good enough to pry me away from my videogame obsessions, then maybe, just maybe, there was something to this after all. So, I came up another day off. Hung out during the day before they went off to work, and again I'm playing it cool. Just happen to mention that maybe I'd bring some more Firefly for us to watch later on, you know, if nothing good is on tv. Luckily, there's never anything good on tv. So we're getting bored and I'd strategically placed disk two of the series on their coffee table. I didn't even have to mention it. John makes the decision all by himself to put on some Firefly, and it all goes rather swimmingly after that. So, Shindig is the first episode. I've been very specific that they are to watch these in order. Otherwise they're likely to miss things, like the cows they pick up in Shindig are the same ones they're dropping off in Safe, for example. Now, I've got a soft spot for Kaylee, so I'm a little partial to Shindig (plus you've gotta love that swordfight at the end.) John wasn't really that into it, though. Still, they are like potato chips, you can't w

It was everything a surf carnival should be. The water was clear, the days were hot. Saturday was overcast so we only fried. Today the sun came out and we fried as well as boiled. I burnt my feet on the sand and went crazy keeping track of the under 8's & under 9's events (age manager here!). But, I was internet deprived! No fan fiction. I didn't even write any. Didn't even realise how much I missed it, until I started looking for my computer to log on. But now look how much Firefly fineness I have to catch up on! I'll be reading for hours...great! And the carnival was worth it, our club did well. And my little guy got two individual medals and one in the relay.

comic strip on hold
Sunday, 05 February 2006 12:07:21

I've made a descision to put my strip on hold for a while..This is due to the fact that the way the last few looked were awfull. I think what I have to do is draw it smaller or take them to Kinko's and get them reduced..I think my main problem is I draw them like I would for newspaper and comicbooks, not computers..completely different animals. computers tend to magnify the slightest imperfection whereas reproduction in comics many flaws are hidden in the finished product..so I'll still do sepia stuff and inkwork and try to figure out how to get my strip to look like I want it..Anybody out there got any idea's I can try I'm open to them..see ya

break from Firefly
Sunday, 05 February 2006 22:29:43

unlike really obsessed fans I've had a break from watching episodes of Firefly (I have got 2 more boxed sets of Alias to get through yet + about 200 films on dvd that I haven't watched!) but last night I watched 'Our Mrs Reynolds' again after a night at the pub (where I did spend some time discussing Firefly whith a friend I've converted to the cause). And, oh dear, I think Alias will have to wait once again.

Chill out day
Sunday, 05 February 2006 22:43:26

Well, that was a long night last night, inlcuding some weed and all the funny talk that comes with that. Mostly on music. Music is a great topic once you are stoned. Well, music is a good topic almost always. So today was just a totally relaxed day, slept long, did not leave the house at all, watched a lot of Firefly songvids on the PC, then watched some Farscape eps, because I was in the mood for it (it is a damn good show, too). I wanted to participate in an Instant Story contest that was on on a German website today, they have this every month, you get a topic and have 90 minunets time to write a short story about it. Normally I am quite good at coming up with something, but this month I am so in Firefly mode, that I could not think anything else. The topic they gave was: "three things somebody needs". You are not allowed to enter FanFiction in the contest, so I wrote some space opera stuff about a starship pilot who has a one man transportation business. His motto is he needs nothing but his ship, some business and depth of space, or so he likes to think. (Actually this guy turned out to be pretty much like Mal, no wonder, him being on my mind all the time). One day he finds a blind passanger on board of his ship, a beautyful young woman who holds him at gunpoint and forces him to change course... It was supposed to lead to all kinds of romance and adventure, but somehow I so fell in love with the characters and the spaceship that there was just no way to finish this story in 90 minutes time. I might make more out of it in the future. Mr. Universe just announced that he now has a Master Playlist and you can select songs and they will be played automatically in the next free slot in the program. That sounds really neat.

Serenity on the Horizon, Official enlistment to Browncoat
Monday, 06 February 2006 00:21:22

Hubby's birthday halfway through January saved me from ruining Dad's copies of Firefly. But I was still Serenity-less. Last week I went and spent cash I probably shouldn't have and picked it up. Shame on me, but I don't feel so bad as Hubby and lil' bro have watched it twice with me! *rubs hand evilly* And now I have something to look forward to. Come this weekend, I shall be finally an official public Browncoat! I'm gonna head up to the Bryn Mawr theater to go and see their midnight showing of Serenity. Since I was totally lame and cash-low at the time, I missed it first-run. This will be my first time seeing it on the big screen. (I don't think a 42" LCD quite counts, tho it comes kinda close) Cash flow problem pretty much solved, so I'm looking to pick up some sweet swag. And I've RECRUITED. I convinced Mom to come and suckered my D&D DM to come along as well with a promise of me driving. --- Meanwhile I'm trying to get rid of the DT's by finding our favorite Big Damn Heroes elsewhere. I found Adam in D.C. Cabs On Demand. I've already seen My Bodyguard On Demand and borrowed The Patriot. Now it's time to sit and watch 28 Days with Alan Tudyk. I also found come February 22nd, our beloved Captain will be on Buffy on FX at 7am. I'll be setting the alarm! Yesterday's fix: Serenity (BDM)

All on board?
Monday, 06 February 2006 07:06:31

I'm beginning to suffer from fierce, self-induced sleep deprivation. :) I find I am spending almost all day here, on the board. Last night I only slept a good 4 hours. Then I got up again, and turned on the screen. See, hadn't even turned my computer off. I pressed the "refresh" button, voraciously consuming the board, thread by thread. Or is the board consuming me? I would say the latter is the fairer comment. I'm a bit frustrated, too. I am a slow man. Nothing like my dear River. I look like an idiot child, even without the comparison. :) Seriously, though, not really stupid, just slow. I generally take a lot a time, and thought, in what I write. Especially if I sense I can reach out to a person. But, as a consequence, I find it hard to keep up. Threads fall off the edge of the cliff so fast, the words are gone ere long. And, honestly, I wish it weren't like that. I wish I could communicate more with people. Deeper, somehow. And that it were not a matter of catching them within the hour-or-so time frame until the thread has scrolled off. Not sure how to resolve this, yet. But I do find myself hunkering for human contact with my fellow browncoats. I experience an intense sense of joy, though, from being all in the same boat together; from being part of this family. Yesterday, for instance, I made a chicken joke: River: ... Squish! Now, forget the joke. But what filled me with such joy, is that I can write these things, pun on a single word even, and people actually know what I'm talking about! :) That they 'get' the joke; that they know exactly at which point in the BDM River said that, and in what context. Furthermore, I get what they are saying! I know the lines; I recall the episodes from which they were paraphrased, and who said them. How cute is that? :) And last night, in a FireFly episode, Kaylee said something relatively complex in Chinese, and, for the first time, I recognized it! And I said to myself: "I can't believe I actually know what she's saying!" :) And I've only been here for what, ten days? See, that is what gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling. I am home, here. Now I just wish I could connect more. And get some sleep. Yes, that too. That's what started this entry. :)

Squeegies and Squibs, What Fun

--Such an innocent diversion, making T-shirts. Better in every way than bumper stickers, except you can't keep your Subaru taped together with a T-shirt. We had a recent rash of silkscreen-making in my house: my older daughter ran off a line of artsy stuff, I made up a shirt for my Renaissance band, Loose Canon (ohhhhh......), and my younger one got fancy with photo captures and Paintshop, and so on. Still, sometimes the best stuff is pure text. I'm dreaming about a cooking apron, tastefully emblazoned with THIS FOOD IS PROBLEMATIC. Or (and this one is likely going to happen), a T-shirt: on the front in bloody big 'Chiller' font: REAVERS ATE MY HOMEWORK. On the back, smaller: --Okay, the dog ate my homework. Reavers are wearing the dog. I see I haven't worked the squibs in. Guess I'll just go watch the BDM again, that'll do.

update on the strip
Monday, 06 February 2006 18:30:22

I've decided to do The strip in a more conventional comic book manner..While I love the daily adventure strip..I also love comic books and in fact the self imposed restaints of a newspaper strip were getting on my nerves...more than a little, so considering the options and all you guy's suggestions, I'll do it comic book style..It seems more natural to me to do it that way anyhow...So keep an eye out for the comic BOOK Firefly coming soon to this web sight...Thanks for all the input, guy's

Sent a letter to SciFi channel
Monday, 06 February 2006 19:53:05

I was recently exposed to the show Firefly and was overjoyed finding it on your channel. After so many years of it being hidden away, the fact that your company has given it new life is greatly appreciated. I look forward to your blockbuster Friday nights. Upon reading your bulletin boards a few weeks back, I had read that SciFi originally turned down the rights to Firefly. The thought that struck me first was, where else would it go? For a channel that could dream up such exquisite shows such as Farscape and Stargate SG-1, Firefly would have been an obvious progression. Following along these lines, I have a question. Is Firefly (or another variation of it) going to be continued on SciFi? I have read many rumors and postings and interviews with different people associated with the show and am unsure as to where the future of it is going, or more to the point, if it is going anywhere at all. Is SciFi looking into restarting Firefly/Serenity, picking it up for syndication? I have always loved SciFi channel, and because you air my most favorite shows, I always will. I look forward to what you will bring me in the future, and I am hoping that Firefly/Serenity will be a part of that. ~Kaele

Back to moving forward
Monday, 06 February 2006 23:16:23

Okay, after spending many days (and especially nights) playing around with the fan vids and screen saver stuff, I finally got back to do some serious writing. Makes me feel better and settles my conscience some. I wrote a little SF story, actually not intended as fan fic, but it does fit quite well into the Firefly 'verse, even though it has nothing to do with the Serenity or its crew at all. I did post it in the Blue Sun Room anyway and hope that people will not hate me for it. I wrote it in German and then translated it to English, which was quite a challenge. I am content with the result, though. Found another role player for my Serenity rpg group (so I now have three players already, I hope to get a fourth one on board soon and then we are ready to rock'n'roll). That is a cool thing. I wrote to Tobias just because I have played with him before and would love to have him in the group, but did not dare to hope that he already knows Firefly. His response was "I do not like Firefly, I LOVE it." He has watched to movie, too. A fellow Browncoat! Too cool. And I unsuspectingly found another one among my colleagues at work, today. Like an army we come! Germany goes Fireflying!

What gives with reality?
Tuesday, 07 February 2006 00:57:11

I really think I want to make this a "Dear diary" item. It's SO me! Let's talk about the Tams. (uh-oh, there he goes again!) Is River real? Or, to put it in another way, am I insane? No, I'm serious. Please, bear with me for a moment. Clinically speaking, a psychiatrist would probably define "insanity" in terms of no longer being able to distinguish fantasy from reality. Am I, by that definition, insane? No. Because I do not actually believe River Tam is a real-life character (I can't believe I just said that; *shudder* Curse my sudden, but inevitable betrayal!). And yet I say: "Full well she's real!" Wait a tick! What was that? Now, the point I'm driving at, is not that River provides for me a reality which is so strong and fulfilling that, to me, she could be said to be "real". Rather, I mean to say, she's better than real! And that, in point of fact, she's even supposed to be better than real! And that I'm very much aware of this; and that I'm very much supposed to be aware of this. :) River Tam is a mirror; but a very special one: the kind that shows you a better you! It's a favorite theme of mine. Looking into those beautiful wide eyes, I then see what I could be, and what I so very much want to become in the moment. As Nicholson expressed this so well to Helen Hunt, in As Good As It Gets, "You make me want to be a better person!" Spiritually speaking, is that not the greatest reality of all, the awareness of one's own potential, and ensuing drive towards betterment of the soul? Does not the clinical definition of reality fall so short of this? How barren it is, I say! When River says "I didn't think you'd come," I find myself elevated to levels of humanity that are, quite frankly, off the scale. At that one moment, for a moment, I become like my own soul, hundreds of years in the future, shiny to the Nth Degree, beaming with a Tenderness, Love and Care that -- if you want to talk reality -- are truly uncharacteristically human in the now. From such heights, looking down at Earth-That-Was, I say, what gives with reality? I'll take the blue pill! I want to see how deep the rabbit hole really goes! I want RealityPlus; I want the expanse we call the 'verse! FireFly, and River Tam in particular, of course, makes me want to be a better person. In that sense, I've relinquished my commitment to the reality of my current self. So, maybe I'm insane, after all. :)

they should really...

Not exactly a newbie
Tuesday, 07 February 2006 05:34:34

Heya! I've been lurking around the site for about a month. Been converted for a bit longer than that. Figured I finally needed to get myself a login and stuff, so I can stop doing the anonymous message thing. That said, this is the most mature, fun, and talented fandom I ever did see. Maybe it's because I am relatively uninitiated into the world of true fandom, but most of the fanfiction I have read elsewhere has been... well... le suh. Usually, the fanart, while earnest, is similarly lacking in artistic talent. Here, the story is very, very different. So, um, hi!

another day another episode
Tuesday, 07 February 2006 13:23:10

Rather then watch all the episodes at once I decided to restrain myself and watch just one episode a day..that way by the time I get to the bdm it'll seem fresher...Y'know I envy someone who hasn't seen the series or the movie yet..you can never recapture the first time... Update on the comic it's coming along amazingly easier since switching to standard comic book format..The transition might be a little jarring at first but, what the hell, it's my story I'll do what I want, nyeh ,nyeh ):

Virus Recruiting
Tuesday, 07 February 2006 14:59:58

I know for a fact that my father's into Firefly and Serenity. But he never actually watches any of the DVDs we buy him. Although, he actually did watch Firefly when it was first out. That is something I will never actually be able to say, and I envy him for it. Hubby got into it once I borrowed Dad's copies. Our copy of Firefly is actually Hubby's, which Dad bought for him on his birthday last month. But Hubby's more of a passive person when it comes to fandom, and more enjoys sitting on the sidelines and ridiculing those who go overboard. I know exactly HOW much he likes Firefly because this is the first thing besides Farscape that he doesn't tease me about because of my fascination. Believe me, that is saying alot. Last night, I popped in the Train Job and Bushwhacked. My brother, who lives with us, lay down on the floor and watched both episodes without one peep. He hasn't commented wether he likes it or not, but since he watched two entire episodes, again it's saying something. My men can be so reserved! I'm slowly getting my Mom into the show. She's more of a Trekkie and into Red Dwarf and Dr. Who right now. But she'll come around. I'm trying to convince her to go see the Captain and Jayne at a somewhat-local convention come June. She seems pretty up for it (despite the pretty steep price), but I'm hoping she'll feel well enough after her treatments. They should be starting soon and I'm hoping she'll feel strong enough for a two hour drive and weekend-long Shindig come June. This coming Saturday we're going to the Bryn Mawr Theater to go see the BDM on the big screen. Not 'first-run', but it should definately be first-rate. I've convinced my sister's girlfriend's boyfriend (figure it out! LOL) to drive with me, then Mom should be meeting us there hopefully with Dad and Sis in tow. I'm very much looking forward to actually meeting other Browncoats face to face. Yesterday's Firefly Fix: The Train Job Bushwhacked Radio Flyer (Adam Baldwin)

Tax Refund Rampage, Part 3: The Arrival!
Tuesday, 07 February 2006 18:27:34

Just needed to gush about some of stuff finally starting to arrive :P Actually, a couple days earlier than I expected. Tricky thing about working nights, actually, is that what I usually do is stay up until about 2pm on days I work, and then for my days off, I try to get right to sleep so I can be up in the afternoon; get to hang out and stuff. Sometimes doesn't work so well, making my body shift sleep schedules that suddenly. Sleeping pills and caffeine help the transitions some(don't worry I know what I'm doing, and they're just for regulating my sleep, I try not to use them at all. :) Trouble with today was, I took the wrong gorram pills. Took the caffeine pills after work instead of the sleeping ones. So I'm trying to sleep, but too jittery to get it work. Good thing, though, cause the first package of my amazon.com blowout showed up a few days earlier than I'd been expecting. Looks like I'll have to go without sleep for today ;p This one had both the movie and tv show soundtracks, and Finding Serenity and the Visual Companion. The TPB should be showing up later on in the week, too, so I'm starting to get rather excited. Actually, I'm listening to the Firefly soundtrack, as I write this, which is why maybe I'm a little disjointed. I've played the second track five times already... (I LOVE that hook towards the end of that, the one that plays on the Train Job ep, after the bar fight when they're getting on Serenity...) First thing I've noticed: that Visual Companion is AMAZING-looking. I'm dumbfounded. Only had time to flip through a bit, but... shiny. That blew me away. And Finding Serenity: that I was really looking forward to. I've been in need of some Firefly-related stuff to read, and that's perfect bathroom reading. (The Companion's a little too pretty for that) Finding Serenity I wanted for the same reason I spend so much time reading through the forums here. (Tearing up now, the song from the funeral scene in the Message is playing :_( I think I just need more and more confirmation that I'm not the only person so totally captivated by this 'verse... :P Okay, I gotta close this off here and do some reading, try to work on some sketches some to keep me awake another 12 hours or so. Really, really, really loving this soundtrack as I write this, though. I've been seriously needing that, and I'm just now finding out how true it was. Man, if Greg Edmonson didn't get some sort of crazy award for this soundtrack, well, then someone is going to the special hell for overlooking him ;p Keep the faith, people. I've got my ammo, now. I'll be holding... hmmm... I guess I can stop typing.... ... now.

Nasty!
Wednesday, 08 February 2006 09:20:47

Made the mistake of walking into Real World Event Discussions today (I kinda replied to a thread, without realizing where it was posted). Let's not do that again. People were so nasty and mean. Not to me, but to each other. I felt bitterly scarse love coming from that place. It was chilly. Not even sure why I feel the need to blog this. I guess, having been engulfed in so much warmth here, the last two weeks, "real life" biting my head off suddenly threw me a bit, I guess. Really weird, though. I'm a grown man; I should be able to handle a wee bit hostility; especially when it's not even levied at me. Odd that is. I saw "Out of Gas" again today. You know, Kaylee is a sweetie, what with the cake for Simon and all. Don't tell River. :) And I'll deny it if this ever leaves the room. Kaylee made me happy today. River made me sad today. And both in a good way. As for that real life thingy, I guess I realize it's not so much that I cannot handle harsh reality any more. It's just, I don't want to, any more. The Verse is a place for gentle souls. Or, at least, it ought to be.

Hey Fellow Browncoats, wanted to come say hi- I've been skulking around this site for a year or so, and thought it about time I carried some sort of ident card. So, Hey! I'm Nina, a singer/songwriter from South East England, and lover of all things Whedon. Notall things wee'd on, mind. The Joss. Have been spreading the good word of the Firefly 'Verse to all and sundry, through the medium of song (tried shadow puppets, but it just gets misinterpreted)- have taken to playing the theme tune at gigs!- and, well, I guess, buying people I love the box set. They in turn buy it for their folk, and oh, how the chain grows! Love it. I'm not terribly o-fay (boy, thats not how thats spelt) with chat rooms, blogs and the like, but I love the very real sense of community I get from this site, and just Browncoats in general. It rocks! So, I thought I'd invite any and all to visit my site on myspace, where you may say hi, or listen to my tunes.. You don't have to sign up to anything, its all free and just a really cool forum for musicians and everybody.. www.myspace.com/ninaclarkandkidcharlemagne I hope everybody is having a lovely day, and if I've posted this in the wrong place, please tell me, and I'll do it over! Thanks, Nina Clark

That Gorram Music
Wednesday, 08 February 2006 17:03:03

Can't get enough of these soundtracks! Both of them really, I listen to the Firefly one mainly, but there's a number of tracks on the Serenity score that really move me, too. (Specifically, the Serenity theme, and right after that track is Going for a Ride... kind of a rambling catchy tune. And the end credits get me all teary.) I've heard some bad reviews of the Serenity soundtrack from my fellow browncoats. Maybe it's just because with the exception of Bushwhacked, it was the movie that I saw first. It's alot more epic than the show of course, and it's not as specifically "Western", but some of those really do a great job of capturing the feel of the franchise. (Which is good I guess, considering that's what it's supposed to do. ;) Firefly soundtrack is just on a constant loop in my bedroom right now for the past like 3 or 4 hours. I know there's nothing I need to say about that one. We all know. Other than the main theme of course, my current fave tracks are Big Bar Fight (I love the hook with the slide guitar towards the end, from when they're riding off on Serenity in the Train Job... wish they'd worked that in a few mores times in the series.) And of course River's Dance. That still gets me all choked up when I hear it. I've stated this before, but I'm really not the sort to get all misty and blubbery at all. Firefly and Serenity both just have that effect on me, one of the main reasons I got hooked on it actually. I know I've read a good book if after I'm done I spend some time just sitting there. Same goes for this 'verse. Just listening to some of these songs though brings it all back again, though. Was driving around town this morning, and had the Serenity soundtrack on. We got to near the end of it where it gets all sad... I near about had to pull over for a time, get my head on straight ;p Anyways, needed a break. I'm trying to use Firefly as a bit of crutch, get me drawing again. Working on this one's taking forever, and I CAN'T get River to look quite right... (Luckily she's got a lot of hair to cover up the worst of it :)

Preparations
Wednesday, 08 February 2006 23:24:37

Yesterday and today I have been totally busy with building a website for my role-playing group in spe. I translated some of the rules to German, created a little forum where we can put the charcter descriptions, keep a flylog and so on. This is just so much fun. I love to create things like this. It is far from finished yet and it is in German and it pretty specifically aimed at this group, but if you want to take a look anyway, of course you are more than welcome to do so. It has some sounds and graphics. You can find it here:

Thursday, 09 February 2006 02:20:34

no matter how much the bdh whores try to convert me to the cult of Mal, i'm not givin' up my space in jayne's bunk! i fought long and hard for that space, battling my friendly jayne-philes in this corner of the 'verse. (and they're tough!) can't i just, you know, divide my time? you know, have multiple extracurricular activites? or do i have to fight the mal girls too? man, i'm tired.

Making a Fan film of Firefly
Thursday, 09 February 2006 02:48:39

Some of us are making a fan film, well a fan series actually along the lines of Star Trek: New Voyages. It’s the story of six very different people thrown together on a battered old mid-bulk transport ship called a “Firefly.” This kind of story will be pretty familiar to Browncoats but this tale has a twist. You see one day our heroes ship will be bought by a disillusioned Browncoat called Malcolm Reynolds and become the home to another band of Big Damn Heroes. Yes, this is the story of Serenity before she was Serenity and what happened to the ship and crew before Mal first saw her in that shipyard. So let’s look at our six main characters. Will Hawkins is the captain. He’s from Ariel so he’s a Coreworlder. His family was rich, influential and able to pay for the finest possible education. Will is an idealist, a guy who started out supporting Unification for all the right reasons. When the war broke out Will was eager to join the Alliance military but soon discovered that he might be on the wrong side. We won’t say what happened next, that’s something to be explored on screen, but when we meet Will he’s out on the Rim and out of his depth, exiled from the Core in a place where he simply doesn’t fit. Amy Frost grew up with Will. She was indentured to Will’s family when she was still a child and brought up with Will as a kind of child companion (small “c.”) She benefited from the same education he had and where she higher born she would have made a fine lady. Will thinks of her as a sister, even though she feels more for him. When she heard what had happened to Will she followed him out to the Rim hoping her skills as a pilot would be useful to him. She’s a paradox, cultured, refined but at the same time a gutsy pilot and outspoken friend. Clementine "Damsel" Arce. She’s a Borderworlder, someone who grew up on the planets that formed the Independents. She was a rebellious child, a tomboy, a clown and the kind of fun kid that everyone knows. When the War came she joined the Browncoats and discovered that she was naturally gifted with a gun. On a target range with a good rifle she was deadly, unfortunately in war you don’t shoot paper targets. Out on active service she discovered just what hell war can be. She witnessed her friends being slaughtered and entered the kill or be killed world that we saw on “Firefly.” Finally she couldn’t take any more and during a troop movement she deserted. Unable to go home she’s stuck out on the Rim looking for people to replace the family that has now disowned her. Zekk Leong was born a survivor. The product of a union between an aristocrat and a slave girl he’s been fighting to survive since the moment he was born. Raised in a monastery and later by a ruthless criminal gang he has developed special insight into the human condition. An escaped criminal with a bounty on his head he provides muscle for the crew and a reality check for Will. He can track just about anything and if you can see him that’s only because he wants you to. A ruthless killer with extreme skills he stays with the crew out of curiosity and the need for a safe place to sleep. Emiline Choi is the ship’s doctor, a Coreworlder on the run from the Alliance for an unspecified crime. She is quiet, gentle and perhaps a little sad. She won’t say just what she did to have a bulletin out on her and she won’t explain why she only wears white, the Chinese color of mourning. Joss Farrell is from Dayton Colony so he fancies himself as a bit of a lad, a face, a major operator, savvy? He’s got these plans --- don’t call them schemes – that will make everybody very, very rich. What a pity they don’t listen and just send him off to fix the engine. He’s more than just a mechanic he’s an entrepreneur, and a guy whose genius level skills with math, electronics and computers are often more trouble than they’re worth. Anyway, if you like what we have come over and see us at

A cute little funny
Thursday, 09 February 2006 04:06:36

okay...so I've already made it obvious that I've hooked my roommate's ten year old son on to all things Firefly, but I have to share this. He was doing his homework earlier and (having already explained what the phrase meant) he threw his pencil down vehemently and says "Go wong tong." Enough of this nonsense. Does it really get any cuter than that people?

My First Firefly fanfic

I just posted my first firefly fan fic. It makes me nervous. Doing the Serenity Tarot cards was fun because I've never worked with photoshop before and it was just sort of relaxing, but writing is completely different. I've been writing short stories since I was about thirteen. I'm an English major. It's more than a hobby for me... In fact, in an attempt to take my writing more seriously, I once took a vow never to write fan fic after high school. But, for better or worse, I felt motivated to break it. So, wish me luck, and please, if you like the story, tell me so and harass me about getting the next chapter done. I've posted chapter one and have half of chapter two written already. I actually have an outline that goes all the way to the end of the story. If all goes well this will be the first novel-length anything I have ever completed (or my second novella, we'll see). So please, help a browncoat out... Here's the descrption I have posted: Set after OIS. Much to Inara’s chagrin, Mal accepts a job offer that takes Serenity far away from New Melbourne and to an unremarkable moon called Three Hills. With Inara’s promise to leave looming over them like a shadow and the job on Three Hills becoming more potentially deadly at each turn, Mal and Inara begin to retreat into their memories while all the while trying to find out what’s going on in their present… assuming they survive to find out. Also, Simon turns to Book for help when with his latest attempt to woo Kaylee, Zoe takes River under her wing, and circumstances lead to and unlikely partnership between Jayne and… I loved the pre-romance between Mal and Inara, so if you loved it too, this fic is for you. In fact, originally I was just going to write M/I romance nonsense, but then I felt that all the characters rule so much that I needed to have all of them in the story. Book gets to play good-guy. Simon gets to be adorable, awkward Simon. Wash gets to fret over Zoe's upcoming birthday. Jayne... well, he gets to do interesting things too. Okay, I think this is enough self-promoation for one evening (what can I say? I am excited and want people to read). So, peace.

The New Phone

Well I got rid of the side kick because it was not working like I wanted it to. SO I got a V3 Razor phone. I like it much. Good all around and sold that Sidekick for 136.50 and Ionly payed 100.00 for it.

TPB
Thursday, 09 February 2006 11:27:00

hey all, I am a short time fan (only got on board mid september)but full time Alliance/Fox foe. have been reading the board for a few months now so decided it was time to say hey, so Hey! Have one question - has anyone got the TPB yet? according to DarkHorse it was released Feb 1st, however, Amazon.co.uk (with whom I've had it ordered for months) list it as unpublished and won't be till March 31st. I e-mailed them about it and they say the publisher still hasn't got it out yet. which is it?

To celebrate the arrival of my Serenity DVD in today's post (YAY! WOO HOO!) I've put up a new image in the Blue Sun Room. Predictably enough, I've gone back to my favourite subject (i.e. Jayne/Adam). There's just something elusive in that man's eyes that I can't quite capture. Just means I'll have to keep trying, huh?

Finding Solace Fanfic
Thursday, 09 February 2006 14:13:50

Hey Friends~ I am overwhelmed by the number of Browncoats reading my stories. Thank you all. I really enjoyed writing this set and would like to embark on another erotica plotline but I am stuck. I have this need, this total drive to always end up back in canon and so it makes coming up with plausible pairings and story lines that much harder. If any of you have any ideas for stories and couplings that you would like to see and have an idea of how to bring it back round to canon, I would LOVE to hear them. Please post me a message here and I will most definately read them. I enjoy writing the stories for you guys. I have a couple of ideas I have been bantering about in my mind but have not written anything as of yet: Zoe and Tracey (from ep, the Message) in a determent camp after the Battle at Serenity Valley and Heart of Gold: Behind Closed Doors-The Unauthorized Story. What do you think? There must be many more ideas out there. So, I hope to hear from you and until then... Aim to misbehave! ~Kessa (YoSaffBrig)

Found this place by accident, actually. But looks like good folks. Good conversation. A place where one can find out what needs to be learnt. I'm all for that. Now, ya won't see me 'round her much. I'm not in the habit of plantin' my boots in one place too long. You know how that goes. But by what I see, I'll be back this way again. Thanks for the hospitality and data. Should come in handy.

My fanfic is dominating my life!
Thursday, 09 February 2006 17:40:02

This week, I have mostly been: i) sitting at my keyboard, trying to structure and write the last few chapters of New Prospects ii) slumped asleep on the keyboard, dreaming about same iii) at work - see i) and ii) for details iv) eating v) trying to put people off visiting so I have more time to do all of the above. But... it's nearly done. And it's been fun! I think half the job has been figuring out what not to include. I mean, if I'd written in every idea and every POV, I'd still be working on Chapter 3! Oh, hang on... ------------------- "Now I'm learning about scary."

Ok, in case anyone happens to read this...how exactly do you use emoticons on here? I'm a little silly I know, I just can't figure it out! Usually I'm really good at these things. *ahem* Now that that's out of the way... ...I'm not really sure what to say here, I'm just a new Firefly/Serenity fan, checking some things out. Really nice site you ppls have here. Again, I say: Thank you, Joss! -Hannie

I hope I've proven a point with my lastest few chapters of How I Soar - and that point is, sometimes I know what I'm doing! Sometimes. For the most part I have to admit... HIS has no defined end point yet, but River's fever dreams were very definitely planned out ahead of time (even if the plan wavered a tiny bit every so often, because I wasn't sure I had the guts to pull it off.) I was genuinely worried I was going to lose some readers with chapter 25, but I'm glad people stuck around to see the resolution of that plot thread. I was planning to spend a little more time on New Vegas, but since they haven't even got there yet and I've given them a new mission, I guess it's going to have to be a brief stay. Plus, River's healing so she won't be able to go gambling with Jayne. But that's okay, I'll work something out. I've got this image of Kaylee going wild at the buffet... Also, for those who are wondering, Mal has not yet begun to get angry over the treachery of the Guild. Oh, no, there is definitely some Cappy ranting and violence to come.

Try not to faint!
Thursday, 09 February 2006 20:43:50

Okay, I wrote a small poem. I felt inspired, seeing a very touching piece of art here: a still of the River Tam sessions, with a beautiful, child-like poem on it. Mine is a bit childish, too. But I like it that way. :) Actually, I changed it a bit (blogger's prerogative; hehe). If I were but a FireFly, And you were River Tam, For you my soul would glow! To be a shiny haven in the sky For you to safely go. And should I find you broken, The first thing I will do, Is listen on that day; Just to hear the words unspoken, Which speak loudest anyway. Shiny! is really what I am; Or for her I want to be. Thought Love was but a lie. But now, because of River Tam, I really want to try. River, if only you were real; Or with the power of my verse I could make it so! Then I could tell you how I feel! But you'd already know.

Lost in Translation
Thursday, 09 February 2006 23:51:59

There were so many things I wanted to get done today (I definitly need to do a huge pile of dishes and wash some clothes tomorrow, I am running low on clean cups as well as underwear and my apartment looks a mess). I kept switching between my computer and the telly instead for the whole day. First I watched the first ep from the Battlestar Galactica series. I do have to agree that the regular series is better than the piloting mini series. The ep was really good. I might become a fan of the new series after all. Then I resumed translating parts of the Roleplaying Game for my players and uploading it to the website. By now I have the most important character generation stuff up and two of my players already know about it and have started working with it. I also translated and uploaded Joss Whedon's article on the history of the 'Verse from the movie guide. And p:censored:t was totally legal? LOL If he presented that article to FOX when he created the series, it is no wonder they cancelled it. I rewatched Jaynestown and Safe today. Enjoyed both of them of course, even though they are not among my favorite eps. Oh, and I had a wonderful dream last night which ended with Mal kissing me. Now, that was something... I will go to bed now and hope to repeat the experience.

Class Bites #1
Friday, 10 February 2006 02:25:09

Thank your higher power that I finally have something I'm actually interested in to occupy my time during the worst class in the history of higher education. Firefly is just so much more entertaining than learning that computers can stare at you as easily (if not more so) as you can stare at a computer. My professor has an accent, slightly spanish I think and his english isn't bad. It's just so hard to listen to for three straight hours. But now I can release the pent up browncoat in me and enjoy my own odd sense of imagination along with those of others. The borders of the land (or space) of Firefly have at last been knocked down. It feels like I'm a dinosaur looking over a dashboard and proclaiming "We shall call it, this land." Alas, if I continue to slack off, this land may quickly become "my grave" in the intellectual world. Curse the sudden but ineveitable betrayal.

Two days to Bryn Mawr Browncoat Shindig
Friday, 10 February 2006 05:39:40

Picked up nametags for the Shindig Saturday night at the Bryn Mawr theater. Acme didn't have them but Office Depot did. I even picked up ones with gold trim that almost look brown. :) I found a guy who had once come to one of our second edition D&D games online and convinced him to come as well. He hasn't yet gotten into Firefly or Serenity, but once he hits the movie he might be a new recruit. === Upon further reflection, I actually recall Out of Gas way back from when it was originally aired! I coulda sworn I had never seen it before. I DO remember being at a dinner party at my mom's and my dad was watching Firefly (trying to get away from the hens). I remember getting the whole western theme but was slightly turned off by it. Know how I remember? I turned on the commentary and they mentioned the adrenaline shot. Then BAM, it hit me! I had that same conversation with my father as we watched Firefly! I know, I know, it was a complete Firefly moment, but it kinda warmed the cockles to know that I actually DID see it first time out.

Finally Figured Why I'm So Ruttin' Hooked
Friday, 10 February 2006 15:47:51

Driving around town today, which is probably a bad idea what with the snow and black ice and all. And of course, my mind turns to Firefly. Actually, it happens alot in my car, 'cause it's a little bit like Serenity. It's... lived-in, well-worn, and held together mostly with tape, baling wire, and love. (Well, not so much the love... and what I wouldn't give for a spunky little mechanic to keep it flyin'... :) Anyways, said this before, but I like to pretend I'm flying a spaceship when I'm driving. Puts me in a Firefly mood and all that... So, doing some "precision" driving, and managing not to fish-tail too much, keeping an eye out for reavers, and my mind wanders, as it does... just wondering what our motley crew is up to. And it hits me... I'm not wondering what they'd be doing if the show hadn't been cancelled, or how neat it would be if it was still running. I'm thinking like "gee I wonder how Simon and River are getting along, and if Kaylee ever managed to convince Mal to splurge for a spare catalyzer. How has Zoe been holding up, and what hijinks is Jayne getting into?" I almost had to stop myself and remember that these aren't real people. Now, I'm not crazy. (Entirely... you can't prove it! :) I can tell fantasy from reality (except for that hazy couple of years some people like to call "college") But they aren't just characters, are they? They are real, living, breathing people. That, I realized is why I can't get the show out of my head lately. We're not talking about a bunch of stereotypical archetypes planted into a spaceship to progress the plot. The plot in Firefly is the characters. It's about what they're going through, not what sort of brilliant scheme they're going to come up with to foil Villian #3's plan. And blah, blah, blah... I can ramble on and on about that stuff, really. Trust me, it happens quite frequently. But there's those more eloquent than I who could put it alot better. (Reading through Finding Serenity ATM, and yeah, some of those essays really sum that aspect up real good.) Point here is: I've lost some good friends and family before, I've dealt with the stages of grief, etc (not looking for sympathy, just statin' a fact. I'm far, far from the only person out there to lose good people, my life ain't really all that bad, and I've been able to move on by this point in my life.) Thing that always struck me with death as odd, though, is the denial phase. Gee, haven't seen so-and-so in awhile, maybe I should give him a call... Oh, yeah, he's dead... ;p All I'm saying is I get the same feelings with our BDH's. Emotionally, I'm not pissed that the show is cancelled so much as the fact that somewhere out there in the cosmos our band of ne'er do well's it out galavanting around the 'verse, having a grand old time and getting into all kinds of misadventures... and I'm missing out on it. That make any kind of sense?

Finding Serenity
Friday, 10 February 2006 16:00:56

"Finding Serenity" is an interesting read. A wonderful piece of home in a book. Firefly being the home and all. Interesting insight into the show, although I'm pretty shallow when it comes to tv. I likes what I see and that's that. Lots of references to B5 and Star Trek (all of them including the black sheep Enterprise) I'm not very good at analyzing television so it was both thought provoking and educational. I only know to watch and in the case of Firefly love what I see. The book enlightened me upon the art of television. It actually exists! Who knew? Joss Whedon knew :)

Reunited!
Friday, 10 February 2006 19:16:25

Ok... so I went home a while ago and not wanting to be parted with Firefly for more than 24hours I decided to take all the disks home for the weekend. All was fine, shiny even, and then horror of horrors my sister took disk 2 out of disk wallet whilst I was packing and didn't tell me. :pissed: Thus, I returned completely unaware that this heinous crime had been commited. And, oh my did I turn the air blue when I discovered it :censored: But it's OK! I have now been reunited with disk two in all it's shinyness and have been walking round with a big grin... Which leaves me to ask the somewhat disturbing question... Is it wrong to be emotionally dependant on Fictional Characters that will be forever stuck in the middle of No and Where on the road to unanswered questions? I know that there's the real world and then there's the 'verse and i'm well aware that they're very different but should one make me happier than the other? An intersting sidetrack to this thought is that TV and movies are actually adding to life expectancy by cheering people up! Wishful thinking! In the meantime I will happily go back to repeatedly watching the series that brought everyone on this site together and will embrace the title 'browncoat' with pride. I shall also stop rambling because I am well aware that i'm sounding weirder by the minute!

Surrogate Drug
Friday, 10 February 2006 23:36:09

I did watch War Stories with the audio commentary on today. Oh what fun! Alan and Nathan just do a wonderful job on it together. But still, it was not a new episode. There are no new episodes. I keep rewatching the ones which are already there, and I still enjoy them, but it just is not the same thing. It is just never as good as the first time! Oh how I wish I could dicover Firefly again! (Those of you who read the story I posted in the Blue Sun Room a few days ago will now know where the idea came from). I am an addict. I have experienced the coolest kick ever when watching Firefly and now I am out thrill seeking and just want this kick again! So, what was I supposed to do? I went out and bought season one of Angel today. I saw some eps of Angel when they were on German TV a few years back, but never got into it (I did not watch Buffy either). Now I decided that they can't be that bad and two friends who are also great Firefly fans, kept telling me that they are really good. I wanted to buy Buffy originally, but they did not have the first season at the store, so I went for Angel instead. I watched the first six eps already. So, yes, I do like it. It is nowhere near Firefly, but it has all that knight in shining armour saves damsel in distress stuff and I have to admit, I really adore knights in shining armour. It is a surrogate, but it is a satisfying one.

Tribute to a show gone too soon...
Saturday, 11 February 2006 09:02:43

Oh, Fox. I love and hate you. On one hand, if it were not for you I would have never known this show. On the other hand, you axed it. So thanks an all, but damn you. No, I am not talking about Firefly. I am talking about Arrested Development. What will most likely be the last four episodes of the show aired tonight. For two hours, I laughed so hard I cried. Now, I cry only for the loss of one of the greatest comedies to air, ever. For me, it was 53 episodes of pure enjoyment. This is one of the rare shows that, like Firefly, hooked me from the pilot and never let me go. The first season was amazing. Then, the second season came and knocked me off my feet (this season holds a special place in my browncoat heart: Alan Tudyk guest starred as Pastor Veals in "Meet the Veels" easily one of the best episodes of the series). The third season... it has been a ride. I won't spoil anything for those fans who did not see the final four episodes tonight, but I will say -- wow. Some of the funniest episodes of the show, especially the last one. There has been talk that perhaps ABC or Showtime will revive the show, but as of now the show is indeed arrested, and prospects are quite grim. Still, it had a good run, longer than corporate logic would dictate it should have, considering its ratings. The second and third seasons were shortened (down to 18, then 13 episodes from 22), but... well, hey, it was more than Firefly got, and I was greatful for every second. So, everyone do your worst impression of chicken while listening to the Final Countdown and hold up your glasses in tribute to the story of a wealthy family who lost everything, and the one son who was forced to bring them all together... RIP Arrested Development (2003-2006)

Dear diary
Saturday, 11 February 2006 18:06:26

Dear diary, Today I was pompous and crazy. Today I made a person cower, never to be seen again. It was the worst day ever. :( Fell in with the "wrong" crowd there for a spell, arguing, yeah, spelling... and grammar. But, dear diary, what is the point of writing correctly, if I cannot say the correct things? It only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in those you love, but a lifetime to heal them. I figured that part out for myself, today. :( Made a person go away, I did. :( In another thread. And not because I had cause to, or set out to; but for a reason far dire: carelessness. That is worse. And a good deal more dangerous. Just a single word; that's all it takes. See, they never teach you this in grammar school. Note to sad self: less repartee, more Love. :(

What are the "Suits" thinking, just look at the DVD sales, they've got a sure profit if they'd just bring back the show in some format... Must have their collective heads elsewhere, although I won't say where! :)

Fairies, Incubus, and my book.
Saturday, 11 February 2006 19:54:11

Never done one of these before but I’ll give it a shot. I’ve been up to my ears in the English language lately, between working of Fairies the next part of Incubus and my book. So anyway Fairies is up on the Blue Sun Room. I like how it turned out. I hope to continue the story as soon as I get a chance. I have the next part of Incubus completely worked out and hope to start work on it soon, but right now I’m giving my typing fingers a rest. I had a bout of writers block last week which is generally a sign that Iv need to take a break. So for the four people who have actually read my fanfics I’m sure that was all very interesting! Haze

I've reached the edge. I may go bibbledy over it.
Saturday, 11 February 2006 21:18:52

Well actually I think I might have reached the middle but that's not the point. All I know is that it's driving me crazy. The worst part about it is that there is nothing I can do about it. I am craving new Firefly/Serenity material. Yes, I can hear everyone shouting "but I am too" and I know that is the case but I've never felt anything like this before. I've spent a large quantity of the day searching everywhere for something new to buy, to try and stave off said craving for a while but I have been unseccesfull. I just don't know what else I can do. I've never been a comic kinda girl but at the moment I would settle for a Firefly postcard. That's how bad it's got. Thank goodness for The Signal and FireflyTalk. Otherwise I'd be in some sort of home by now. What would be great would be for someone to write a list of all the Firefly/Serenity tie-ins/merchandise that are available already or are coming up in the future. Maybe that would help me. Anyone know of one already? Anyone want to write me one? Can you tell my mental state from my ramblings? Yeah probably. Fanfic is the direction I turn to. I've developed a, some might say, strange love for anything Mal/Kaylee centric but there is hardly any of it. When are the Strawberries looking for votes? I'm there. So here I am, at the edge, which, by the way Jayne, doesn't just look like more space. It looks like months of waiting. Bring me more comics please! Pretty please! Oh yeah and a sequal. Mr Whedon, I am in your hands. (That didn't come out quite the way I meant it to!) Much love Alison x-x-x-x

Sunday, 12 February 2006 05:59:51

Got a whole boatload of requests asking to buy my art.. and while I'm flattered, I don't know if I can..leagly anyway..without getting into a whole copyright infringement thing. I suppose I could trade or something..Or give them away as gifts...also alot of people would be surprised at how fragile the chalk thingys are..in fact the first ones I did are already starting to loose the whitness..prints I could probably do since I still have the original mega scans.. (these things are huge). The conte' stuff is holding up which isn't surprising since thats a wax product..Let me know what you guy's think...

Hot Topic Shirts
Sunday, 12 February 2006 06:42:07

I just had to express my excitement about this because it's 11:30 and there is no one else who understands around... Today, I had another friend watch Firefly...which she said she liked...but we'll see. Anyway, after the outtakes, cause they are HiGh-larious. Well, my dad called and asked me what my shirt size was. Here is where you gotta understand my dad: he doesn't really normally do the whole buying clothes thing, especially for me. Somewhere in the whole conversation he said something about being in Hot Topic.(he likes to read the shirts.) In my head, Hot Topic clicked with Serenity, cause he knows how much I love Firefly/Serenity. So I told him my shirt size, he told me he'd have my brother bring it back, and then we hung up. Here's the trouble: I don't see my brother until Monday at school...ack. And that's my story, and my excitement. And since Hot Topic is the only store, that ain't online, selling Serenity stuff, I'm kinda thinkin' it's that. If it is what I hope it is, you'll know.

serenity shadows
Sunday, 12 February 2006 07:29:05

Does any one every wonder why there is never any shadow from the front/nose section of the ship when the crew walk out of the cargo doors/ramp? I always wondered that. Sometimes the angle of the sun seems like it wouldn't cast a shadow anyway. Who cares, right? Its just one of those things I noticed. Or, in Ariel when Jayne, River, and Simon are being transferred by Alliance guards......Jayne has his hands cuffed behind his body at the start of a fight; then, in the middle of the fight, his hands are suddenly cuffed to the front of his body. Jayne was smart to use trick photography in his fighting. These things don't make me love the show any less. Maybe more, I suppose. I'm always looking for those little things that keep the show itself fresh and interesting to me. I've gone back to "Objects in Space" at least nine or ten times to watch that one over and over again. That's got to be my favorite episode right now. Before, it was "Out of Gas." I'm a sucker for non-linear. O.ofG. is the "string theory" episode as far as i'm concerned. Didn't Minear say there were three concurrent narratives? Tearing paper out of Symbols. vE:blush:

A new way to appreciate FF
Sunday, 12 February 2006 09:27:21

So, in listening to the fireflytalk podcast, I thought it would be interesting experiment to listen to the episodes. Some scenes I've seen so many times I can tell you how the person's head is positioned from one moment to the next...so listening to them actually gave me a new appreciation for FF. I 'felt' them like I did the first time I watched them. In particular, the end of Safe. Hearing the emotion in the voices gave it another depth for me. Sometimes, I think we are too distracted by visuals...don't get me wrong I love my visuals, but it was really cool and interesting to do this.

my art for sale?
Sunday, 12 February 2006 15:18:57

Thanks for all the input everyone..It seems the general consensus is ............ok. I'm leaning toward the limited signed print route....that guarantees that what you all see is what you get..I was shocked at the condition of some of the earlier chalk for white drawings, as someone whose worked exclusive in pen and ink I don't usually have to worry about longevity of the art I'm doing.. (on the River and Simon one the white is almost completely worn off) So let me do some thinking on it and I'll give you guy's the heads up...thanks again...

Monday, 13 February 2006 02:13:15

i had this wicked dream last night... i can't tell you what it was. my dreams are always so involved, with plotlines and so on, character development and everything. most of the time they're crazy, post-apocalyptic fun. but sometimes... i love it when i have dreams like this. they just stick with me all day.

A day of disappointment and surprise
Monday, 13 February 2006 02:58:27

Well, the Bryn Mawr show had to be missed. I did all that work to promote it and sent out a bunch of e-mails (which for Ben's sake I hope it worked!), and *I* was the one who couldn't go! Hubby was freaking out all day long, worried that I'd take the car and just drive, the weather be damned. But I couldn't do that to my babies (five and one). Hubby has no parents, and I could never ever risk my life driving through that in my itty Toyota. My kids need their mommy. I am now trying to convince myself that Ben'll definately do another showing. This time, it'll be a huge blow-out. Time to write my check and send off that letter since I couldn't go. I think I'll work on that tomorrow. Opened the back door this morning to almost 2 feet of snow. Choosing between driving in that and hitting the Shindig was a wrenching decision, but it needed to be done. Our beloved Captain cuts his losses too sometimes. --- Got a neat surprise today. A friend of mine who's at Penn State and usually sits in the D&D group with us has been a closet Browncoat since the summer! I was so excited to hear that he loves the show too. His only regret was that he wasn't able to dress like Mal for the Serenity debut. Someone I know who I didn't have to recruit. I'm just loving it! I finally have someone to chat Firefly with. --- Firefly fix: Since I missed the BDM, I watched it at home. All by my lonesome.

moving
Monday, 13 February 2006 03:54:58

I'm in the very beginnings of a move from Iowa to the Bay area (I'm hoping to get an apartment in the Bay area, in Pacifica: close to the ocean). I am not looking forward to selling the stuff I can't keep, and packing all the stuff I will keep.... It is a huge job and I'm not really up for it. I guess it is one of those 'one day at a time things', and it WILL pay off... eventually.

Valenine Schmalintine
Monday, 13 February 2006 05:17:12

My family and I celebrated V-day a little bit early, partly because we won't be together on Tuesday and partly because none of us have a decent place to hide the chocolate, lol. Since none of the men in the whedonverse have responded to my declarations of undying love and devotion, I don't have a Valentine this year. And I've decided that I really don't care. Coupling be damned, I'm loving this whole single college student thing! Screw this lovey-dovey go-seh. Okay, done ranting. I swear I'm not bitter, this is just a result of watching the multiple romantic comedy marathons on today. Still, I will be very happy when this "holiday" is over.

OK has anyone tried to read the CRTL+ALT+DEL comic strips all the way through?
Monday, 13 February 2006 05:47:05

FF / XFiles
Monday, 13 February 2006 09:24:52

the X-files used to be my fav series till Firefly came along. I always used to try and spot X-files characters in anything I watched - now I do it with Firefly characters. has anyone spotted any crossovers? the biggest has to be Adam Baldwin in two episodes of Seasoon eight (called the truth) where he played either a supersoldier or an army informant on the supersoldier scheme (been a while since I watched it). I hate to admit it but I'm struggling to spot any other crosses

every thing....................gone
Monday, 13 February 2006 12:24:40

Thanks to technology every drawing every vid cap every scanned sketch.. gone. Blame it on the new computer..or the fact that My backs ups weren't up to date...but I turned the new computer on this morning and got nothing...using an old computer now..I suppose I could rescan everything.. But thankfully CBY's package helps recover all that I've posted..which is only about a third of my total stuff..I've got most on cd's somewhere ...but the effort to put them back on is dauting...arghh....so it will be a while before I post any thing new So I'm needing some help here. Anyone knows of a good vidcap site or any or reference material site I would greatly appricate it...lost all my bookmarks too... ps anyone who's sent me requests or messages pls resend them..they were in my messages folder on my email but that seems to be gone also....@!*&!!#@

Pouring very FRESH wine
Monday, 13 February 2006 17:52:03

It got to be my job there for awhile. Pouring very fresh wine and handing the cup to a new Browncoat who had ventured into this vine 'verse of ours. It tapered off in recent months - mainly because I've been awfully busy with school these days - but now I'm making a point to visit here everyday if I can, and see who's posting for the first time. So many are still saying they were converted by the DVDs, others are coming in after seeing the movie and then the DVDs. Every single one has discovered the wonderfulness that is Firefly... well, now! They didn't see it when it was on the air, they didn't suffer the horror of cancellation. They're exclaiming over why this great show was ripped so prematurely off of TV. Like all the veterans did back in the early days. In "The Train Job" Mal said, "I'm thinkin' we'll rise again." I'm starting to believe him.

Out-takes & deleted scenes
Monday, 13 February 2006 19:02:43

*COUNTDOWN: 14 DAYS TO SERENITY DVD* So that's my first fanfic completed, and it seems to have gone down well. It's a new experience to be able to write 'THE END' on one of my stories! I left a few threads hanging - Zoe's predicament, for example, and the whole Simon vs Jayne thing - but that's okay: can't tell all the tales at once. And I might want to return to this story arc at some stage, so leaving a few issues open makes sense. :smokin: My original premise for 'New Prospects' was always to have Serenity end up stuck to a doomed freighter, but the Decamerone was originally going to be heading for the sun, a kind of radioactive suicide ship. Also, the character of Ossie Chen was meant to be Badger, but the idea of Niska and Badger teaming up on our BDH just didn't seem to sit right. And anyways, I like Badger, he's a fellow Brit! Creating a new character seemed like the best option. Who knows what Jayne and River did with him in the end? :knife:  It's interesting to me now to look back on segments I didn't use, and wonder where they might have led. I had a sequence where River flips out on Kaylee during their space walk, but by that stage I'd established that River was far more cogent and capable since Miranda, and it almost seemed out of character for her to do that at that point. Similarly, I had Jayne accidentally tear his suit as he exited the Decamerone, at which point Simon clamped his hand over the rip to seal it and then demanded to know the truth about Kaylee's top... but again, it just didn't feel right. Psychologically, Simon was just about coping with his space walk, and for him to suddenly turn all calm menace on Jayne didn't work for me. So there endeth the longest blog I've ever written, and on we go to the next fanfic. Gonna spend a week or two mapping out the structure, and then it's on with the show. Shiny!

Been awhile
Monday, 13 February 2006 19:13:02

I've been offline for a while now. Gotta say I've missed y'all. I've also not written a thing since Thanksgiving! No excuses, no reason, just haven't been on the computer. Maybe it's been winter blahs or something. Now I'm looking forward to catching up on about 3 months worth of stuff here  and finally pulling the threads of my story (Crop Circles) together and getting it finished and posted. It's been whispering at me for a while but now it's starting to whisper threats. :fork: Oh, and I FINALLY got my DVD set back from all the folks my husband has been loaning them to. Yay. Anyway, glad to be back.

New Firefly video
Monday, 13 February 2006 20:39:40

Just finished my fifth Firefly/Serenity music video. This one's a look at all of the relationships from Shepherd Book's perspective, set to Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus. I tried to use everything I've learned so far about creating videos here, plus some things I learned along the way. I hope everyone enjoys it. Personal Jesus - WMV - 3:51 Two sizes 856x480 - 27.8MB

new material
Monday, 13 February 2006 23:05:46

second installment of newcomer added. The third might be a bit longer than the previous; haven't decided yet. A couple more issues, and I might start working on my real series again, but if the firefly fanfics are popular enough, and I continue to have fun with them, I may continue them.

Still angelized
Monday, 13 February 2006 23:25:07

hm ... I am beginning to understand what some of my friends have tried to tell me years ago. This whole Buffy/Angel thing ... I have watched all 22 eps of the first Angel season now and I enjoyed them immensely. I even started rewatching them right away. And I have lots of ideas for fanfiction which I will probably never write, or if I write it, I will keep it to myself and never publish it, because it is all Mary Sue-ish. Did I mention that I really have a thing going for knights in shining armour? And I am not even the type that needs a lot of rescueing in daily life. Well, but backt to the things that really matter :-) I have just talked to my remote-player for the RPG via Skype for the first time. The connection was not too good and he does not have the newest version yet, so we could not try out the video connection, but still it was good to hear his voice (I had not seen him or talked to him for almost six month now). I mean, we could have used the phone, of course, but that's just not cool. (Did I mention my nerdyness-factor yet? I guess for a woman I rate pretty high, think Daria and then add some nerdyness  ) And I found a fourth player today and another one who will not participate regularily, but wants to join in as a guest player from time to time. This is so cool! I can't wait to get started and have the first adventure already mapped out (secretly plotting and scheming while at work, hoping that my boss never looks into the folders of my desktop PC)

Best RPG in the Verse
Monday, 13 February 2006 23:49:38

 I just finished up my first session of Serenity the RPG last night. I blew some stuff up, and punched a shepard....not bad for a days work hehe. I might just have to write a story about my character.

Firefly group on Sconex.com
Tuesday, 14 February 2006 01:14:16

There's a high school directory online called Sconex.com where you can join and see other people from nearby high schools. I'm from The Bronx High School of Science (NY), and I created a group called "You Can't Stop The Signal. (Firefly)" If anyone is interested in joining, feel free! I'm doing this to spread the news of Firefly, and hopefully a lot of people will join. Right now I'm not doing too good; I can view the profiles of students that go to my school or if they are linked to me through my friends, and it's sort of local, as the schools that come up most frequently are the local schools. It's hard to publicize the group, so if anyone is a member of sconex.com, please join the group! I do not know if there are other groups dedicated to Firefly. Although I typed in the key words and found nothing, it may be only locally. I also don't know if sconex.com is known to other states.

The fanaticism of fans
Tuesday, 14 February 2006 04:19:14

I was talking with one of my film profs about STAR WARS and George Lucas and all that, and it got me to thinking about fandom in general and what I like and don't like about it. I enjoy being a geek. I like being part of an internet community that helps champion a vastly underrated sci-fi story. And I enjoy being a part of other fandoms and such. But one thing about these fam groups that I don't really like is the fanaticism involved with it. Now I know this might sound hypocritical coming from someone who not only saw SERENITY five times on it's opening weekend, but went dressed as Wash all five times. But hear me out. The reaction to the film has been highly positive from everyone whose seen it. But occassionally, I see a thread here talking about how SERENITY was inferior to FIREFLY and a list talking about all the things they didn't like about it. Whinings like "Kaylee wasn't in the movie too long. Inara was just a cameo. Simon was too assertive. The film lacked the complexity of the series." Just a list of bitching and complaining from people who should have been incredibly grateful for the fact that there even was a movie to begin with. Which brings up my main point. At times, a lot of fans, not just Browncoats but the internet community in general, act like a spoiled child on Xmas morning. The kind of kid who gets the dollhouse they wanted, but makes a big stink over the fact that it's homemade with exquisite craftsmanship and not the one they saw in a catalogue. Rather than being grateful that there is a movie follow up to an unjustly cancelled TV show, or that there are going to be three more additions to the Holy Trilogy that are going to explain how it all began, they whine and mope and complain about the tiniest insignificant details, when they should be looking at the big picture. Rather than realizing the overall arch and connecting threads through all of the six films, they crucify them for their choice in window dressing. I love STAR WARS. I can't wait for like a 30th anniversary, 10 disc box set of the whole series to be released in 2007. But I'm not one of those "George Lucas raped my childhood" idiots. I'm not so wrapped up in my pre-conceived notions of what the Holy Trilogy should be that I whine when Lucas decides to try a different approach. The prequels , in my opinion, had the exact same amount of wonder and enchantment that the originals had. I have no objections to them at all. What I do object to is the collective mass of whiny, jaded geeks who are not able to look beyond their narcissism to realize what they have in front of them. If they want Han Solo to be a cold blooded killer, go ahead, take it. If they prefer a trilogy of films about cold, emotionless philosophers in leather fighting a computer system whose programs have more personality than the humans fighting it, so be it. I'm sticking with the fans that are grateful for what they get.

new show in Firefly verse?
Tuesday, 14 February 2006 09:55:07

here's the question. if firefly / serenity as we know it never returns how open would ya'll be to a new show set in the same verse but with totally different characters? a few examples: - a series set during the unification war - a series set around a main alliance character - another 'historical' series maybe recounting the first signs of trouble on Miranda or my favourite idea - a series based around the hunts of jubal Early (especially the one with the miget arsonist) although they would be different shows they could still perhaps have camoes for the original cast

Valentines Day. You make the day, not Hallmark.
Tuesday, 14 February 2006 16:28:42

Ok, look alive you male Browncoats! Tis V-day! Time to remind the women-folk of our lives that we care. There are daughters, sisters, mothers, grandmothers, nieces, favorites aunts and close female friends, not to mention wives and girlfriends, that deserve it! Just a little something to show you care. No needy for tacky or cheesey. A single flower, a hug, a phone call is all it takes. If you want to cheap out and succumb to marketing... your loss. As a male that spends the majority of my summer on the softball diamond, I know I don't always take the time to show my girls how I feel. So on Valentines day I cook a special dinner, make a dessert, deliver my flowers (my florist knows me by name, not a bad thing really, keeps me outta the doghouse.). My little girls LOVE it! I know I'm spoiling it for their future boyfriends, but as a dad, I feel it's my duty. Duty is the wrong word, I love every minute of it. Ya it may be expensive, but it doesn't have to be. When My wife and I were at different Universities, I drew her Valentines cards. It's the... (hang onto your hats)... thought (ya I said thought) that counts. So, put some thought into it fellas. With a very few exceptions, they are worth it. That's just my two cents worth.

Do you know what my sin is?
Tuesday, 14 February 2006 17:48:45

A wise person once said: "If you want to have a friend, be a friend." Tried that today. Only thing is, my FireFly friends are not in; doing their Valentine's Day thingy, I guess. And I should be happy for them; and I am. Don't make this day any less lonely, though. We all have to die alone; big deal. Some of us have to live alone, too. Nope, I won't say I "hate" this day; for there's really no place for hate in the heart. But lemme just say I will be glad when it's over. Do you know what my sin is? It's envy.

New Little Series
Tuesday, 14 February 2006 18:24:43

So hey, just for V-Day, started a new little series:smile:Hope you guys like it and thanks to all the readers! It's a continuation of my series First through Gift Horse. Unfortunately it got bumped due to high volume, so I am shamelessly plugging it in a blog:biggrin:Please comment! It's called Thoughts

Lunacy
Tuesday, 14 February 2006 18:35:59

This is going to be a rather long and personal log entry. I just have to get some things out of my system. You are really welcome to read (and comment, of course), but don't say I did not warn you  Do you know the Angel ep where they have a sesitivity training at the police department and go all emotional (I think the ep title is "Sense and Sesitivity")? It was a little bit like that at work today (minus the training part). Everyone was just venting over something or yelling at someone else. And I sat at my PC screen on the verge of tears all day (more on that later). I really could not figure out a reason, until the thought came to me that, hey, maybe we have a full moon? And then when I just got home from work, there she was, staring me in the face, all big and round and satisfied with herself, laughing at me. Luna can be a real bitch sometimes. My life is a little Whedonesque at the moment. I am having relationship issues. Well, actually it is just one relationship issue and the issue is more or less that I don't have a relationship. That's something I share with roughly estimated a fourth of the human race, so it isn't half bad and I should be able to live with it by now (my last steady relationship ended 8 years ago and there weren't many unsteady ones in between either) At that time I fell in love with a man who did not return my feelings. That hurt, of course, rejection always does, but I got over it (or so I thought) and we became friends. Good friends. Close friends. Soulmates even. We really developed a brother/sister like relationship, we had so much in common it sometimes was almost scary. We are both pretty smart (the "gifted is the term" variant of smart), but were underachievers in school and especially at university, dropping out of our academic careers at almost the same time, found work at the same company, we both seemed unable to get a steady relationship on the way, we spent vacations together, wild ones, too, we shared a tent and a bunk on a sailing vessel more than once, we were rope partners when rock climbing. We are close, as close as you can get without starting a sexual relationship, but never would even as much as a kiss pass between us. He was the one who drove me to the hospital when I sprained my ankle, he fed my chicken broth when I was sick and he was the one I could call when I needed a strong man to help me redecorating my apartment. He depended on me to help him with his resume for a new job, he asked for advice on dating women. We talked on the phone for hours, we exchanged up to 20 emails a day. We were close. We needed each other in the way you need someone when you are single and still want to share your life with someone. Half a year agon he fell in love with another woman, the right one, this time, as far as I can tell. He is as happy as can be, they moved in together after only three month and they are going to get married in two weeks. I am sure that he would say that his feelings for me have not changed, but he just does not need me anymore. And for that reason I cannot keep calling him and depending on him the way I did all the years before. I feel like I am losing my best friend. I really do. And it hurts just so much. I hate myself for this, acutally. I don't want to need anyone, I want to be in control of my life and the last thing I want is to go all weepy about a man who does not even love me back (because as much as I want to blame it on the best-friend-no-longer-there part, I am afraid that this is what it is all about, still. He rejected me and marries someone else). I know it is time to just let go and be happy for him. I just can't. I am not Julia Roberts. I can't go to his wedding party and wish him luck on his way (and I don't have a gay friend who would show up and dance with me instead, either ... goodness, I even watched this stupid movie with him once). I know I would break down and cry as soon as the ceremony starts and I would probably be the one waving and screaming at the "if anyone here knows a reason..." part. I told him I will not atte

Mindless Gushing About the Comic
Tuesday, 14 February 2006 18:37:58

(There be spoilers, I'm sure) Finally got the trade paperback in the mail the other day, and of course I wasted no time in totally devouring it in one sitting. First off, I do have a small little gripe or two about a couple of things. Don't think our man Joss is all that used to the medium. Yet. Nothing so that his inner greatness doesn't shine through and nearly blind me in awe, but... couple transitions are a little wonky and it looks like he had a little trouble containing the story within the inherent confines of having to tell a story in so few pages. One or two parts I had to go back through to understand and such, couple transitions were a bit awkward. Sorry, had to get that out of the way ;p Five years in college studying sequential art and all I got out of it was opinionated. Plus side: It's more Firefly! It's worth getting the paperback edition for Nathan's intro and the various artists' take on the crew alone. Tim Bradstreet's one of my long-time fanboy idols from way back when he was illustrating RPG manuals, so I really appreciated his rendition of Book. Not to mention Will Conrad's art. I've always been a little wierded out by seeing Tv shows done in comic form. The characters are never going to look exactly like they do in the show. (Unless you could somehow get each and every cast-member to sit in for reference drawings for every panel...) He does a simply bang-up job in that area though. Wash and Inara being the two that don't QUITE look right. Kaylee's somewhere in between, I think he made her nose a bit too straight and the overalls prolly threw me a bit, but for the most he really captured her. Jayne of course just lends himself to being "comicized". But Mal, River, Zoe and Book are dead on the money. Not to mention the fact that he's a real shiny artist. Lotta love obviously went into putting this together, and that's generally what I look for in anything. That's what got me hooked on Firefly in the first place. Also, there's some really touching moments in there. (Here come the spoilers) Didn't catch it the first time through, but there's a panel where Mal is about to talk to Inara and is interrupted by Wash. It floored me when I noticed that in that panel, Mal is standing outside Inara's shuttle, poised to... knock! :P Nice being able to see some of the gaps between the show and the movie filled in, too. Bishop's leaving really makes sense to me now. Well... running out of steam. Just felt the need to get that off my chest. Now that I'm hearing there may be more comics in the future, I'm doubly excited. (Still not as good as the series getting up and running again. And it will!!!! :P But still news enough to be excited about.)

... sOo lonely ...
Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:41:47

Hmm... I'm pretty depressed today - prolly cos I had to get up early [AGAIN] to go to work...:banghead: Don't get me wrong the money is good and I like what I do - it's just I'm in a mooooooooooooooood... I know this is a pretty lame entry for my v. first blog but I just felt like writing is all... And sharing my mood (not that there is much to share at the mo) Hmm - I should just stop but I will leave you with this ---> The next blog will be a bright one when I'm back to my old self :) I :censored: promise 0:) Jessssssssssssssssssica...

Subtle, but true to character...
Wednesday, 15 February 2006 02:28:02

I was watching the deleted scenes on my Serenity DVD and, while in intense Adam-focus mode (wherein I watch only him during a scene) I noticed something. When Jayne hands Book the cigars, he snatches one back at the last minute, like he couldn't really stand to be TOO generous with the gift-giving. It's subtle, but very true to character. Another of Adam's little additions, I think. Anyone else pick that up?

Coming up with a PLAN
Wednesday, 15 February 2006 04:52:13

I'm a happy Browncoat. I finally got Followmal and Malnourished to download YIM and chat with me. *hint hint* SURE WOULD BE NICE IF OTHERS DID THE SAME. ---- I am frustrated. I've only been here a short while, but I'm sort of stuck. I'm getting a feeling of a lack of organizations of Firefly fans. There are so many GOOD and GREAT websites out there, but nothing centralized. There's no one keeping track of who's posting, who's not. There's also no way of organizing a writing campaign except cross-posting across multiple websites. I cannot resist the urge to be reminded of the Star Trek Starships. Local groups who gather at regular times, led by a Captain and handed ranks by participation. It would translate very well to Browncoats, but the particulars are eluding me for now. I don't like the idea of fans falling through the cracks. I don't like the idea of us not being represented like other organizations at scifi conventions. I REALLY don't like the idea of trickling. We need to puddle! We need to uh...what does a river do? (Besides make up creepy nursery rhymes.) ROAR! I believe I shall be falling back onto what I already know. Time to call on the Prydonians of Princeton and pay my dues once more and then steal. Petty theft was good enough for Mal, so it'll be good enough for me. I shall examine them and strip them of all relevant knowledge, then stiff them on dues. No, all kidding aside, if they can do it so can I. Heck, thanks to Ben from the Bryn Mawr Theater, I KNOW there are Browncoats in the Philly area. Hundreds most likely. If anyone reads this and can help, please let me know?

Stuck
Wednesday, 15 February 2006 14:08:20

I'm stuck, stuck, stuck and frustrated. Where is "Thinking things through" going? Only Buddha knows. 'cause I don't. I think I've written one too many reports in RL and fried my brain. Unusually for me even the bones of chapter 9 aren't working as they should...so I'm giving up for tonight. "Tomorrow is another day" and maybe the plot bunnies will attack.

V-Day!
Wednesday, 15 February 2006 14:14:27

I got a mini Jayne for V-day! :)

I just recently came upon this site, and I am glad that i did. I have also recently heard rumors about a season two, and i am wondering if the same actors will be in it. If not is just wouldn't be the same. I really hope it goes through with the same characters. That would be great. I am gonna go. Hoping for the best

Me again
Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:28:46

Wow, thank you all who commented on my log entry yesterday. I am really feeling a lot better today, actually, I started feeling better last night already. Funny what two bottles of beer and four episodes of Buffy can do for you  It wasn't just that of course. Your wonderful comments really did comfort me a lot and made me feel that I am part of the crew. One of my real life friends (and fellow browncoat and player in my rpg-group) called me on the phone and cheered me up, too. So I really could end the day with the feeling that I am not alone and that was a very good thing. Today everything is back to normal and I am my old wisecracking ironic self again. And now I will watch some more Buffy and then I will go to choir rehearsal and then probably watch even more Buffy ... life is just so nice

New Parenting Law

You should not be allowed to have kids if you can't operate a pregnancy test. I can't believe I screwed up "pee on a stick.":stupid: ETA: Yes, we're trying to get pregnant. And I'm just a flake: I forgot to take the cap off the stick you pee on.

Slash defined
Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:32:58

This is for all the newbies to fanfic out there. I'm not going to go into a big long history of slash fanfiction and why it's called slash. If you want to know that, you can find it lots of places on the 'net--just google it. What I do want to say is this--you know when you see a story with Mal/Inara or Jayne/Kaylee or Zoe/Wash in the description that it's a story with those characters presented as a couple. Well, the same thing goes when the description says Mal/Simon or Simon/Jayne or Mal/Jayne--or even River/Kaylee, Kaylee/Inara, etc. The story is going to be about these characters, most likely paired romantically. Those of us who write slash understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea. That's why we label it with a slash warning. If you read the story anyway, without knowing what that means, and don't like what you read, please don't rant at us. We did warn you. Rational, adult comments are always appreciated, but ranting will more than likely be ignored. I have to say that I have been fortunate enough to not have anyone rant at me for my stories, for which I am sincerely grateful, but I have seen such comments on other author's stories. Thank you to everyone who has read and/or commented on my stories--even if slash isn't your thing. Your comments are greatly appreciated! Hope this clarifies the terminology for the uninitiated, and that my fellow slash writers don't feel I've stepped on anyone's toes. *g* Long live slash!

I work as a call centre chick and I get to wear those groovy head set thingys!! I work for the New South Wales Government in the department of Commerce - it sounds pretty professional but really isn't. I take calls from schools / railways / government buildings when they have a problem a tradey can fix... I go out partying with my boys, aka the contractors and they are pretty cool - I have only been really sloshed twice and painted the town red (literally)

so here I am
Wednesday, 15 February 2006 22:59:41

So here I am at work and wonders of all wonders there's nothing to do. And now here's a question. Does anyone else get so excited when they talk to people about firefly or serenity that they gesture all wide and there voice gets louder and they feel like they're describing there new crush to there best friend? Just cause I did that today to someone and plum forgot that I was on my way to the rest room and went back to my seat and relised I still had to go. Silly stuff just beause I've got nothing better to do and you've read this so that means you've got nothing to do which is real shiny. I sit with my lap top and my internet all day at work and then work when I'm at home. Somthings wronge with that picture. I spend a lot of time doing work stuff and no time with my friends (probably why I don't have any more). Well this is a whole lot o drivel. Anyway I hope you all will like me and respond with clever little quips and make me feel special in my little box.

Okay! So, I'm new here! Not to being a Browncoat, but to this site. I'm just running around and trying out things, so just felt like announcing my presence...so...hi! Hahaha. Yay for Firefly and Serenity!

Thursday, 16 February 2006 01:38:01

I'm afraid I painted a poorer picture of Mal with my last installment of The Newcomer, and it was not my intention. I have corrected my accidental oversight, and hopefully, the story will continue to be agreeable from now on. Thanks, everyone!

The Fundamental Three Customization... Exploration... Creation... These are a few of the aspects of life for which a “Gamer” lives. A game can never have too many choices, never be too big or detailed, and it can never have enough creativity embedded within. Our souls cry out for these three fundamental ingredients of which we define ourselves. Our everyday life is filled with them—they define the art of life itself. Without them we can survive, but for what? Customize the flow of your life. Explore and learn life. Create life. Customization The ultimate game—life—the one we all play whether it be willingly, gratefully, or even knowingly. So how exactly do we do this, what is life? How can you play something you don’t know? How can you thoroughly play a game with such complexity? You can’t, you have to choose pieces. You have to customize... you have to customize the pieces of life, form them into what you want and can handle. Every choice you make is part of the customization of your life; the knowledge you seek, the conclusions you come to, the decisions you make, the skills you perfect, the career you follow, where you set the apple on the kitchen sink. Every choice you make customizes your life. Exploration Life is so complicated and immense in depth, so many nooks and crannies, so many fields, forests and mountains, so much sky, so many possibilities, so much knowledge. And it’s all there, waiting to be explored. Exploration dances nicely with customization; you explore life and customize what you find. The more you explore the more you customize, and the more you explore and customize the more you grow, which brings you back to exploring and then more customizing. Exploration is the golden key that makes Man so special, that and the intense need for customization. It allows us to grow and learn. Creation What would life be without creation? Creation is the final product of customization and exploration. Without creation life would still be as it was when first begun. So, you customize, you explore, you customize, you explore some more, and then you create, and then the whole thing repeats. This is how life itself grows. The more you create the more there is for others to explore, customize, and then create for themselves. Afterthought A good game has decent depth in all three of these aspects of life. A great game has an extreme depth in all three aspects, especially in exploration (the more there is to explore the more you can customize, and the more you can create). Life has a limitless depth in all three aspects. Of course, a game in life is just a piece of the game of life. Reader's Note You may wonder why I start with customization instead of with exploration. If so, let me explain the simplicity of it. You are part of life; in all of us is a core piece of life. There is no need for exploration in this core piece of life because it is our core, it is our foundation—we all have it no matter what. All that’s left for this piece of core life is customization and creation.

Me again
Thursday, 16 February 2006 04:40:56

Hiya it's me again second time today cause now I'm home and just waiting for my phone to ring. Why oh why am I such a slave to the pay check? Seriously can anyone tell me? Well I can. Cause cashey money makes my car go forward. AND NOW A SHORT REFLECTION ON MY VEHICAL Okay so it's real old like late 1980's old and it's kida falling apart. It reminds me of Serenity some. I know I could just buy a new car and it would save me money in the long run cause my car aint worth more'n it'd take to fix it but I love her. She's my good girl and keeps running even though I still can't drive a stick shift to well. Oh god my grandmother would die if she ever knew that I was even typing in this manner. She was a golram english teacher for thirty some odd years. So anyway I like it here. I can't believe I finally found a place where I could belong and there are actually other people here. So I love you all now. Bye. Sorry if I seem creepy now.

Thursday, 16 February 2006 05:17:13

Well....
Thursday, 16 February 2006 14:58:03

As you may have heard, SoulOfSerenity & I are attempting to write a new Fic together. As the movie changed the whole History of the 'Verse, we are starting fresh. So forget all that has come before, and I hope you like the newer versions of our characters. Soul has already posted a teaser for the fic, as well as some of his writing. I hope to have chapter 1 of mine up sometime soon. Also, I will be posting a very crude (please don't laugh) drawing of a ship we are thinking of using in this fic. 'Ski

Kaylee on the brain
Thursday, 16 February 2006 16:13:35

I woke up thinking about Kaylee this morning. I woke up at 6:45 am for no reason. I should have been wondering why in the sphincter of hell am I awake this early but no I was all glowey thinking about my little mechanic. Then I was wandering around blurry eyed and stepped on my nano. Apple made them a lot more durable then you'd expect! So that's a little blurb about my morning while I ignore my daily conference call.

Thursday, 16 February 2006 19:18:09

It's worked every other time and the other discs still work, but when i try to play disc 2 it says taht the disc is is not formatted to play in this region. If any knolegeable person out there could shed some light on this i would be eternally gratefull. I need to get back on serenity!

Announcement and Apology
Thursday, 16 February 2006 20:47:45

First, ReBirth - Soul - 2 is up, finally. Okay, posting it 8 times, however, was not my fault. I feel really bad for burying other peoples stuff, so I'm writing this blog to apoligize. I've e-mailed Haken and Shiny to try and get this fixed. I had my fic all set up to be posted, and hit "Submit" at the bottom. Well, it went to an error screen, so I hit back and hit "Submit" again. Did it a few times in a row. So when it finally did go through...thus the resulting 8 posts. So I apologize, and I hope that you can look past my mistake to enjoy my fic!! - Soul

On the Drift on Big Damn Back-Order

Well, I told people to get 'em while they're hot. And apparently they did, cuz they sold out in minutes. The good news is that more stock has already been shipped to CDBaby, and ordering will resume shortly. Folks who don't want to risk it can reserve one now by signing up at:

I just gotst/\ let you know!!
Thursday, 16 February 2006 21:40:52

Well... Good Morning!!! It is 8:30am & I have half an hour till I start work and I thought I should let you know that today will be my last day on the site for about a week - I know!!! It's ok, really it cuts me deep too but we will get through this together :) LOL!!! You know, I crack myself up and I know that is like crazy but at least I make myself laugh ;) The reason I won't be on for a while is because I have to go back home to Brisbane to be with my family (or what's left... long story) - I'm really looking forward to seeing all my old friends and just going crazy like old times!!! See... we don't have internet at home, although my dad has the net hooked up to his laptop but I doubt he will let me use it hahahaha! Well, I'll prolly write during the day - as I'm stuck for work and I've only been getting about 100 calls (which is a slow day)... So cutting a long story short (well not really) I'll be on here probably the whole day :) Yay for you ;) LOL! Keep on smilin' Jesh xXxXx PS - I am wearing a new outfit today and may I add it is shiny... literally :P

How would it work?
Thursday, 16 February 2006 23:02:04

This was a really dumb question.

Rebel for a Cause
Thursday, 16 February 2006 23:56:42

What would have happened if FOX had not cancelled the show so early? I mean, yeah, we would have all got more eps to see (something I really would have loved), we probably would not have seen teh BDM. But apart from that! I mean, it would have been a hell of a TV-show, but that would have been it, I think. There have been other good TV-series before (okay, maybe few and far between, but I know a couple), and there will be new good TV-series in the future, because there are great filmmakers out there. We would just have been fans of a TV-Show. Just like there are Farscape fans or Star Trek fans or Buffy Fans out there. The cancellation of the show, the feeling that there was injustice at work here that has to be remedied, is what makes us more than fans, is what makes us Browncoats. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that the cancellation is a good thing. But in a way it is what brings us closer together. It is just like the crew of the Serenity. They would probably not get along that well if they were not constantly in trouble and up against the rest of the world. Nothing brings a group of people (be it crew, tribe, clan, community or family) closer together than a common cause or better yet a common enemy (even if it is a TV network  ).

Bad Mandarin
Friday, 17 February 2006 01:02:06

I'm still a bit shy so I am posting this here on my blog. Originally posted on wotmania. This has been stewing in my brain for days. Much has been made by fans, writers, cast and crew about the truly hideous pronunciations the actors have when they attempt to speak Mandarin. However, I am here to defend their terrible pronunciation. As the premise of Firefly is that it is set approximately 500 years in the future, and that the two remaining superpowers, China and the US have merged, is it so unusual that the way Mandarin is pronounced would mutate? I don't think so. Language is constantly changing, morphing, picking up tonalities and vocabularies on a daily basis. Slang leaps around the world (shiny!) (moo juice!) at faster and faster rates as we move towards a fully linked global culture, thanks to the Internet and mass media. In every country in the world, you will find a myriad of different accents, dialects and slang terms used by countrymen and women. These accents and dialects can vary wildly from towns not very far removed fom each other. Just think how easy it is to tell someone who is from Queens from someone who is from New Jersey! For another example, the British Isles has a wide variety of distinctive dialects, among them Cockney and High British. For these reasons, I believe it is entirely plausible that the 'bad' Mandarin spoken by the characters may be more realistic than if they were able to speak flawless Mandarin. The odds of any language staying pure when two cultures meld is historically and practically implausible, if not downright impossible. Thanks for reading. I can sleep now. Volunteer: Battle of Serenity Valley Zoe: "Sir, I think you have a problem with your brain being missing."

Ah! The Heat!
Friday, 17 February 2006 03:17:46

The good news: it's and unusually warm Febuary in New Hampshire. The bad news: it's and unusually warm Febuary in New Hampshire. We can all look forward to having our maple syrup early from Vermont, but whenever one looks up at the sky, one can only worry about how much ozone is left up there, or if he'll ever get a chance to whine about the cold in the future, or if (God forbid) snow days become a thing of the past! No more snow days?!!!! THE HORROR!!!!! WHAT HAS MANKIND DONE?????!!! answer: f:censored:d up

My comic update

reminiscence and chapter 4
Friday, 17 February 2006 06:24:53

well, section 4 is on the site, and 5 should wrap up the story, unless there are enough requests to continue the storyline, or I decide I've had enough fun so far. Then, I may convert this writer's block-breaking project into a side pet-project, just for fun. Not sure what I'm gonna do as of yet...

The (Inside(er) Edition)
Friday, 17 February 2006 07:52:56

So I was procrastinating and realized that not only have I never fly-logged on this account, I haven't written about a peculiar bit of tv programming I recently came across. I was flipping though the onscreen programming guide late one night and came across the following lineup on NTV (a Newfoundland station). The Inside (yes, that one) The Insider Inside Edition This can't be a coincidence. I found it again the next week (I think it's Monday, or Sunday). Usually really early morning (1:30amET/3amNfld). But if it's not a coincidence, how do you explain a crime investigation show, followed by some entertaiment news show, followed by a news magazine. Someone was having fun with the schedule. (And on The Inside still airing after being cancelled last year, NTV is an independent station and tends to continue to air episodes after a series has been cancelled - not sure if they get the rights to whatever eps have aired and then just air them when they want to or if the get the rights to a certain number of eps and then just repeat whatever has been aired already to fill in the gap. They continued to show Firefly after it was cancelled, though late at night, and only the aired episodes. Just in case anyone was wondering if I was hallucinating the whole thing ).

So, I seem to be doing this a lot lately, but I need some advice or maybe just encouragement
Friday, 17 February 2006 11:55:03

OK as everyone who talks to me or reads my blog should know by now I'm shifting to Vancouver- from Australia- to be with my sweetheart. Well I have been toying with the idea of going over to study- probably welfare- but I'm scared, I haven't done anything like that since I left high school, I just haven't felt ready (I graduated in '02) and now everyone says that it's a good idea and I *want* to do this, but I don't know if I can. I guess basically I'm just looking for some encouragement more than anything- any other 'coats out there do anything similar, any Vancouver coats out there willing to give me some advice or inspiration?

RIP G'Kar
Friday, 17 February 2006 13:47:09

Andreas Katsulas died just recently and he will be missed by everyone. I loved his character on B5 and of course the Fugitive.

Mercedes Lackey
Friday, 17 February 2006 15:02:34

Yes, that's right. Mercedes Lackey, the creator of the Valdemar books is a Firefly fan! My favorite author (Anne McCaffrey comes a very close second) is a fan of Firefly. What an awesome writer with such an in-depth look into the human phyche, and she likes Firefly too! It's right there on her site:

Working on a new Shirt....
Friday, 17 February 2006 18:13:34

Starting silk screening a new shirt today... this one is "Canadian Browncoat" themed... three colour application... basic design is the silouette of Serenity, with the Independent's flag filling in the shape of the ship, and the star replaced by a Maple Leaf (for us Canucks)... it's coming along well... I've started a new technique for my templates, I'm using clear acetate (such as overhead projector sheets) as my pattern, so they can be A) seen through to line up multiple colours much more easily than solid paper and B) they're Reusable once you wash the paint off... helpful if you plan to do more than one run of the design... I've also decided that Yellow sucks!!! It allows too much of the shirt colour to bleed through it, so it looks faded and doesn't stay bright or crisp looking... I think it will only work well on white or similarly very light coloured shirts.. don't even think about black, as I discovered when I tried to do a Serenity Logo shirt on black... just didn't work well, colour wise, everything looked washed out, plus, I tried a stippling method with the paint, but not at all happy with how that turned out... but I'm learning new things all the time... Today's lesson: when screening a multi-coloured shirt, start with your weakest colour, and progress to the strongest colour... I'll post a picture when it's done if it turns out okay...

Got my Visual Companion
Friday, 17 February 2006 20:42:43

Got my Serenity Visual Companion last nihgt. flipped through it for about 30 seconds, looks pretty cool. Still waiting for my Australian DVD Tin to arrive.

Countdown
Friday, 17 February 2006 22:41:28

So today begins my very sad countdown. I am moving in eight days...and alas there will be no internet to the far recesses of the planet where I am going....grandmother's house. I have resigned myself to the fact that a gypsylife is truly my calling. I will be back sporadically, but as of seven days from now, it's bye bye fff.net for a while. It saddens me, yes, because I have made so many friends here, but I will come back...soon as I can. So...eight and counting.

ROAR.... MALCOM!
Saturday, 18 February 2006 01:06:49

PSHT. Dear Buddha. Please bring me a pony and a plastic rocket and... Nathan Fillion on a platter in bondage clothes?? O_o Whee. Sorry about the huge delay with my fan fics and what not. Im so busy. :-(

I have arrived!!!
Saturday, 18 February 2006 01:34:12

To offer all and any assistance needed to any other fellow Firefly lovers. I found out about the show after it was cancelled. Fox did such a crappy job of getting the word out :disappointed: I discovered the show on Sci Fi and have become devoted. I would love to see the show come back, although with a few key elements removed during Serenity-I was not pleased :pissed: on the Sci Fi channel.

*excited* EEP
Saturday, 18 February 2006 04:29:40

yay! firefly. i can't believe how many people found out about this show after it got cancelled. honestly, fox did an AWFUL job of promoting this show. then again..they do a pretty awful job with most things. i heard about serenity...somewhere...like..yahoo movies or something. anyway, i decided it was a movie that needed to be watched, and searched blockbusters for THREE MONTHS for it, always..always rented out. finally i got it about two weeks ago; loved it, didn't understand a bit of it, ordered the series and just finished the last episode yesterday. i'm planning to go back over all of them with the commentaries soon. i really hope to see more of the show but 3 years later and nothin doin so i guess i can't get my hopes up. although the movie was a big step. GAWD i'm such a kaylee fan. uh hello, becca and catalina from flash forward and space cases. GAWD i loved space cases. i can't help that i'm a little kid. anyway, someone recommend the best fanfic to me.

Time to write, Cashy money, Magnets?
Saturday, 18 February 2006 07:40:13

Tomorrow is letter day. I got rid of my little Jedi and am just stuck with the mini-munchkin. I've promised myself that I will handwrite four letters tomorrow before my uberbusy week next week starts. Time to get some Firefly/Serenity-ness out there in people's faces. If I write more than four, great. --- Daveshayne: Excellent. I laughed. Honestly, there were chuckles. --- Thursday I was a very bad girl. Very very bad. For my bank account, good for our BDM. I malled and stuff and picked up: Serenity Novel Serenity RPG Serenity Comic #3 (BIG pleasant surprise there!) Firefly Soundtrack Serenity Soundtrack Serenity T-shirt from Hot Topic Not bad for a few hours of shopping. Totally plan on wearing my Serenity Tee on Monday as I visit the Crayola factory. Small disappointment as I couldn't find the Finding Serenity book with Mercedes Lackey. Slightly bigger disappointment that Hot Topic didn't have the Browncoat shirts. Even larger disappointment that not only couldn't I find the TPB, but that I didn't have enough cash on me to try harder. --- Now I just need to find someone to make the Serenity logo on a large magnet that I can pop onto my car door and drive around with it. For everyone to see! Anyone? Anyone?

Saturday computer day
Saturday, 18 February 2006 14:01:38

Finally got a weekend off and it's like 5 below outside..Good day to get my computer back to life..Maybe watch some firefly.. Got hooked on "Lost" recently (that show's like Lays you can't watch just one)...Maybe work on my comic some later...Interested in what you all listen to CD wise...when I'm drawing, besides the Firefly-Serenity soundtracks, I usally listen to The soundtracks to both Halo games, Maybe some Enya, Fleetwood Mac is in there, The soundtrack to "Last of the Mohicans" .(My second favorite movie, ever) All pretty good...well signing off now..maybe I'll just get back under the blankets (electric of course)

Doubles all round!
Saturday, 18 February 2006 14:05:27

COUNTDOWN: 9 DAYS TO SERENITY R2 DVD LAUNCH Woop! Thought I'd share my joy with the world, as I've just placed a double order for the 2-disc R2&4 version of Serenity. I spotted a post on FFF recommending it, and decided to ship a couple in: one for me, one for my brown-coated buddy. The one-discer is released here in the UK on 27th Feb, but this one 'should' be here before that, and contains all kinds of extra shininess. Roll on! And I picked up a copy of DVD Monthly magazine yesterday. This mag always comes with a free cover disc, and this month's is chock-full of Serenity goodness - interview soundbites with Joss and the whole cast, b-roll footage, five featurettes, international trailer and six clips from the BDM... And it's FREE! UK Browncoats, take note!

Rusty Fingers and Finding my Muse
Saturday, 18 February 2006 16:38:01

Much like love, creativity seems to be fickle mistress. You just never know when something's gonna come out of the blue and smack you upside the head with a pointy stick. Generally tends to be when you're least expecting it, too. Said this before, so I'll try to be brief, but this past month or so has been a pretty exciting time; and I owe no small piece of gratitude to Joss Whedon for giving me Firefly and showing me that it hasn't all been done before. After five years of schooling (well, I'm sure school was in there at some point... most of that time is kind of a blur, really :) I managed to pick up a BFA in Sequential Art from SCAD. I believe that was back in 2001, but I've got some troubles remembering the exact timeline. (Which is another story entirely.) Wasn't a fun time when I graduated, lots of personal stuff; that whole entering the real world angst, death in the family, blah blah blah, etc... Somewhere around that time I sort of ran out of anything to say in my art. Past few years have been pretty good actually, so I'm not complaining. Holding a steady (if crappy) job, get to spend quality time with my siblings, etc. (As the oldest of three, I sorta tend to identify alot with Simon...) But really just stopped drawing and writing all together. Was starting to wonder if I ever would, and around last year was starting to seriously consider a life that didn't include any artistic endeavors. (Aside from a small sideline writing uhm... erotica online under a pen-name... actually good for some pocket money, though...:) I never had any expectations of being the second coming of H.P. Lovecraft or anything, but I'd always sorta wanted to be "in" that sort of group. So... this is getting long, and I haven't even gotten to my point. So, long boring story short, Firefly came along and something just clicked. I came away from the BDM immediately wanting a project to work on. I've put a couple images out here in the Blue Sun Room (really the number one reason I started hanging around here was all the great talent I'd seen.) There's three of those up now, and that's about a third of what I've been drawing. Been real hit or miss, trying to work the rust out of my fingers. Drawing, I've found, ain't quite like riding a bike. Some of the stuff that used to be rather easy... isn't. I've even fallen back onto an old habit I thought I'd kicked of transposing faces of people I know into the people I'm trying to draw. (Especially River... they look nothing alike, but everytime I try a River, she comes out looking like a girl I used to know in high-school...:) Anyways, that's just a really long-winded way of me saying thanks to the people who posted comments on my stuff. Really means alot to me to get some encouragement and constructive criticism from you guys. Got sort of an idea in my head now, trying to do a series of sketches and they'll likely have more of an impact once they're all done. Couldn't shake this image I had of members of the crew (well... probably mostly Kaylee) running around with a camera and taking snapshots of the Big Damn Heroes in their downtime. Probably not the best idea for me to get back into drawing by 1)Trying to draw actual people as opposed to my own characters and 2)Trying to accomplish that from screencaps and other "flat" media. But I figure now that I finally have a 'concept' I'd better run with it while it lasts... I've learned I can't always trust what little creativity I have to be there when I need it. Anyways, that's why Firefly means so much to me personally. It showed me something I was starting to think I had lost for good. So I'll be getting back to rubbing lead all over the gorram place. I'm looking forward to my next day off, so I'll have time to watch the BDM once again, only this time with the commentaries. Also, just got in the mail the other day my issue of the Serenity comic from 258 West Authentic signed by our lovely Jewel Staite. *squee* (What can I say, I always fall for "the cute one".) Is it creepy that the only things hanging on my wall is t

Ron Glass wears Chuckies

My first week here more or less
Saturday, 18 February 2006 19:52:45

And I've begun maybe to make a few friends. Seem to have made an enemy as well. :disappointed: I supose it evens out. I'm not quite sure exactly when I :censored: in his cornflakes but we seem to have agreed to ignore each other so no harm I suppose. As to new friends may I thank everybody else for the warm welcome, stimulating discusion, and making me feel stupid at hangman. FollowMal you don't seem to have gotten around to issuing me my regulation browncoat - but I see you've been a bit busy lately and I did kind of just jump in without introducing myself and acted like I'd been here all along so no worries. The coat I'm wearing is a kind of brownish color so it'll do untill you're heading that direction. Firefly. Wow. It's like somebody opened up my brain, mapped all of the synaptic connections, and produced a television show aimed specifically at me. Everlasting gratitude for enriching my life goes out to all involved in this project from Joss all the way down to the ladies staffing the catering trailer. (Yes even :stupid: FOX strange to say, without them I wouldn't have gotten even 14 episodes) So my first Blog, something sad, something glad, something obvious. Weather in daveland: really freaking cold.

Recruiting
Saturday, 18 February 2006 23:33:47

I found another player for the role playing group. I don't even really know the guy, I think we met once on a Mensarian meeting. But since then he is kind of tuned in on my website and now read that I want to start the roleplaying group, so he wrote me an email. He does not know Firefly yet, but since he is a fan of Buffy and Angel, I am sure I can recruit him as fellow browncoat quite easily. We decided to do some serious DVD watching in the next days. I finished watching Buffy Season 3 today. Wow! I just loved the Graduation Day episodes. Also, Marnie, the Hitchcock movie, was on German TV today. It is a wonderful film, I had heard a lot about it, but never watched it before. Great camera work, there. And a very handsome young Sean Connery. Definitly worthwhile. Also, I hunted and killed a ghost last night. Okay, I admit, that is the dramatic way of putting it, but hey, life is just so much more fun when you picture the world being full of magic creatures and supernatural powers  I had been hearing strange noises in my bedroom during the last few days. At first I thought it might have been a mouse or another small animal, but it sounded too loud and too random for that. Then I suspected that it was the computer cooling off or maybe the pneumatic spring in my new deskchair or something like that, but I had to cast all those theories overboard. The noises were not too scary, but they were a little disturbing, in fact so disturbing, that I prefered to just draw my blanket up over my ears and fall asleep on them instead of switching the light back on and look for the source. Last night my curiousity finally got the better of me, though, and I crawled out of my bed to confront my "ghost". It turned out the audio speakers on my PC sometimes shortwire, even if the PC is turned off completely, and give short bursts of static noise. Once you draw the power cord, the noise is gone. So, no ghost, no supernatural powers at work, not even a mouse, just a plain stupid technical defect.

My First Firefly Fan Fict, Written!
Saturday, 18 February 2006 23:52:24

Well, After watching all of Firefly on DVD i wrote my new Ongoing Fan Fict for Firefly entitled Firefly: Continued Serenity! I guess you could say Continued Serenity is how i would continue the Firefly Series given the chance, So. If you've read it leave some feedback and let me know how it is!

Ch 3 of "Over the Hills and Far Away" is Up, yay! (more details inside)
Sunday, 19 February 2006 02:14:38

Yay! Chapter three is up. I'm kind of impressed with myself, posting two days in a row. The writing is going faster than I anticipated (*knocks on wood*). Before I post any more, there are a few things I should say. When I imagined this story, my intention was to have flashbacks to both Mal and Inara's pre-Serenity lives (this was implied in the description of the fic). However, for various reasons (well, two reason really 1-Mal's story is not as developed as I wanted it to be, and 2-this fic is so long already...), I've decided just to focus on Inara's story. Eventually, the flashbacks will reveal my take on why Inara left Sihnon and just how she ended up on Serenity. I spent a long time yesterday looking through unofficial Firefly/Serenity timelines. It seems that the general consensus is that Inara left Sihnon the same year she started renting a shuttle on Serenity. In my story, Inara leaves a bit before that. If any one has issues with that… sorry, I guess. I’m keeping this story as true to canon as I can, but I am just a lowly fan fic writer… :-) I'm really have fun writing this fic and I'm really enjoying hearing whay you guys think of it. Hopefully, I'll have chapter four up soon (expect a bigger gasp then between ch 2 and 3, though). If anyone has a question or whatever, feel free to ask here... Peace.

I'm Home
Sunday, 19 February 2006 04:25:57

I wasn't going to use this feature because I already have a blog that I write in fairly regularly at another site. However, I can't say this in my other blog. I'm home. This last year has been hell. Moving away from relatives and friends and living on campus, where I knew almost nobody. Add that to the fact that I have a hard time making friends and loneliness is pretty much complete. I recently told a close friend that I don't miss specific people, I just miss people in general. Knowing that I'm somewhere with people that can take me at face value. Feeling like I belong. There's nowhere here that gives me that. Except this little corner on the 'net between no and where. I can joke around and have fun without anyone judging me, without any fear. Everyone is so friendly here.

Lament for Joss
Sunday, 19 February 2006 05:20:55

So, I really only heard of Firefly in 2005. I am a new fan. I am really, really envious of long term browncoats who got to ride the excitement wave. Because this is depressing. I just read Joss's comments on the CW rumor, and although I didn't believe the rumor, his reply seemed to be snarky and bitter. Not the "We'll do whatever it takes to keep flying" Joss we once knew. At least, the one that gave such a passionate speech to spread the word about Serenity. So, the little TV show that could became the big movie that didn't, and even though the movie made it's money back, and is a cult underground hit, we have nothing to hope for. No light at the end of the tunnel. We are out of Gas. Maybe Joss feels turned upon by his fans, that we somehow let him down by not getting enough people to see the Movie. Maybe he is tired of people criticizing his decision to axe Wash. (For the record, I was devestated to see him go, but I understood why he did it the minute I saw the darts hit Kaylee's Neck, the Bullit hit Simon's MANLY STOMACH, and when River got Reaved.) Maybe he is just bummed that although his shows routinely deliver rabid fans, this one got axed. I don't know what made him give up. But I distinctly feel that he has. Maybe he and the cast sat down together and were like "Ok, time to let go." But I guess fighting lost causes against all sane odds was what made the show special. I just keep waiting for a sly smile from Mal, like he knew he;d be back all along. This site has become depressing. whine whine whine. That's me whining. Michele

How the Signal Spreads
Sunday, 19 February 2006 05:29:26

A friend of mine sent me this email through the site that is selling my band's Firefly-tribute CD: "Thank you for making this album. Since you converted me to the browncoats Cedric, I went on to convert all myfriends in Olympia, and everywhere they went (Tulsa, OK - San Diego, CA - Port Townsend, WA - Spokane, WA - Los Angeles, CA - Chapel Hill,NC - Alexandria, VA) they carried firefly on their back to spread to more people. I may never know how many people you've influenced, but thanks." Talk about making my day.

A Scary Feeling
Sunday, 19 February 2006 07:04:44

Earlier today, sometime around noon, an odd feeling started creeping its way into my gut. I‘d been cleaning my bedroom, at the time, and was able to make use of my amygdala (mine happens to be intact) and get back to work. A few hours later the feeling resurfaced, stronger this time. Again I was able to push it away, but not as easily (I had to get out an old mirror—previously obtained from the alley by my house—break it and arrange the pieces into an artistic design). It worked. At least, for a while. I couldn’t arrange pieces of a broken mirror all day; I have a life, don’t I? Then the feeling came back and made me wonder. It kept growing, and growing, distracting me from whatever I did, gnawing at my insides. Sometimes I get feelings like this that are due to a lack of activity (if I sit around all day watching meaningless TV, or I do something else that deactivates brain activity for to long). Usually I just get my lazy self up and do something more... more meaningful. This wasn’t the case. Different feeling. Around 8:00, in the evening, the feeling was getting out of hand. I decided to just plop down and watch a Firefly episode. Funny thing is, as I got the DVD, set everything up, and decided on which episode (OMR), the feeling began to recede. At the end of the episode (just after Mal finds out that Inara kissed his wife) I was sitting on the couch laughing up puke when I realized the feeling was gone. It had retreated unnoticed during the ecstasy of the ‘vers. I came here, wrote this, and now I’m wondering if I should watch Objects in Space. Is this scientifically considered an addiction?

COUNTDOWN: 8 DAYS TO SERENITY R2 DVD LAUNCH Where have all the ideas gone? I've been brainstorming my second fanfic for a week now, but I'm still not certain where it's going. I feel short on creativity... though since I generated the whole of 'New Prospects' in the space of three-and-a-half weeks, maybe I'm still all written out from that. Whereas 'New Prospects' had a very linear timeline - necessarily so, since I wrote it one chapter after another - I want this next 'fic to jump around a little more, a la 'Out of Gas', so having a clear plot structure set in place will be all important. That's the plan, anyway. I even have the first few pages drafted, but it all feels quite rough, and I'm not sure where to take it. I know only that it's going to be set during the Firefly series canon, will see our BDH go to a mining moon, and will revolve primarily around River and Simon. Ah, well. Think I'd better watch a few episodes and see if they give me any inspirations. Some people seem to be able to conjure 'fics out of thin air - I'm not one of them, and it's mighty frustrating! :banghead:

To Whom it Concerns......
Sunday, 19 February 2006 15:10:36

It was unusually cold yesterday so I was getting good reception on the UPN network. Low and behold "Roseanne" was on and I got to wondering if Joss had done some writing on that particular episode. Though I never got around to watching the credits I sort of became lost in John Goodman's consistently hilarious performance. Did any one ever see the episode where the Connors go bowling? My stomach hurt. Because I laughed. So hard. Not because I was doing sit ups.

Geek Crush
Sunday, 19 February 2006 18:46:39

Okay, I've seen lot's of stuff on here about people being in love (or at least lust) with the verious actors from Firefly but I have a confession to make. Here goes. I am in love with Captain Malcolm Reynolds. Not Nathan Fillion (although he is nice). Captain. Malcolm. Reynolds  You heard me! I'm in love with Mal as played by Nathan Fillion. So there! Ha! Tune in next time for a blog that's not about this

The wheel never stops turning, and that doesn't just hold true for the rim
Sunday, 19 February 2006 20:04:30

Ok so at the same time as my friends around the world are getting verse-shattering news to despair over I'm getting the best news of my LIFE. Hence the title of my blog but I'm focussing on the good- the shiniest of the shiny actually. Well my 21st is at the end of March and naturally as it is my 21st- the last of your birthday's that your family really truly cares about- and my Grandparents called me and said that they had $6000 to give me for my birthday- to contribute to my trip. Can you guys believe it??? Don't I have the shiniest grandparents in the Verse?? This is a *huge* weight off my shoulders and I want to thank all of the coats who have been helping me out with advice and encouragement. It means so much to me, especially when I've been feeling so lost. Thanks everyone, have a Shiny Week!!

Well...here I am...

I just finished the Firefly DVD series and all I have to say is, Ching-wah tsao duh liou mahng, Nee ta ma duh tyen-shia sou-yo duh run doh gai si!Those gorram television executives cancelled what had to be the greastest show on the air! They wouldn't know a good show if it bit em on the ass. And I'm mad that I watched the movie first, not knowing it was extended from the show. But, MAN! What a show.

THE move....and another
Monday, 20 February 2006 02:38:12

So it is Sunday night and I have to be out by Saturday...however, it looks highly likely that I will be moving to Charleston, SC two weeks from now. So....calling all Browncoats in that area....lemme know before I am internetless and maybe for once in my life I'll be able to go to a shindig. BTW the Charleston move is because of a job offer. Nothing special, just something to get me on my feet again. My life has been SO hectic as of late, it'll be nice to finally be settled!

(pt 2) explanations and some thoughts on stuff
Monday, 20 February 2006 03:43:53

I read a really disturbing blog.. All I can say to him is "it's just lines on paper". I might be good at capturing a certain likeness but that doesn't make me a better "artist" than anyone else..it just makes me better trained..it's all hand and eye coordination and that can be learned..also I would suggest looking at the works of artist Vermeer(sp) to see how he handled light. It's all an illusion just to trick the eye into seeing a third dimension that's not really there..Highlights midtones and shadows.. The way I learned it was by the use of an opaque projecter. the old timers called it camera obscura..project the image onto your paper or canvas and then go over it...eventually your eye will see it that way without the use of the device...and practice, practice, practice... I'm sorry I'm going on so, but I never had a drawing of mine effect someone so much...

Bummed out........ It's a v. bad day
Monday, 20 February 2006 14:43:39

I've had a bad day today...... I just started feeling well enough to go back to work today after having chest infection (I'm asthmatic - it hits me hard)..... I got to the school where I've been teaching and there was no work..... The job's been given to someone else permanently, and my agency forgot to tell me...... So I came back home and I've been feeling bummed out ever since...... I need some serious cheering up...... Any advice, fellow Browncoats??!! :blast: :disappointed: :crap:

Spread the signal...
Monday, 20 February 2006 16:57:48

I currently have Firefly playing in the lobby where I work. Not exactly the "type" of people who are usually fans... but I might catch a couple. Every little bit.

Why I love this site.
Monday, 20 February 2006 16:59:36

I post my story here and over at the live journal and I have to say, I like this one better. Over at the live journal I have no way of knowing how many people have read my fic unless they give feedback. Here I get a running count of how many have at least looked at it. Yeah, there may be duplicates and such, but at least I know someone besides me and Sid are looking at it and that's all kinds of shiny.

Random thiings that are annoying me
Monday, 20 February 2006 20:02:13

Major video rental chain store never ceases to amaze me with their utter incapability to stock things I wish to see. I'm not sure why I even bother going in anymore. Well that's not true I go there because they are a block from my 3rd floor walkup and I'm really lazy. But I digress. I first noticed their bland insipidness when I wanted to rent a copy of the movie MASH. A fine bit of filmaking from 1970. OK it was a longshot that I would find this at major video rental chain store but like I said 1 block, lazy. Not only did they not have the said entertainment in question but nobody in the store even new the movie in fact existed. It won an oscar people. Donald Sutherland, Eliot Gould, Robert Duval. Do these names mean nothing? A bit later on I'm feeling a bit down and insignificant so I figure I could use a bit of gut busting guffawnery and easy intelectual superiority so I go down looking for some MST3K goodness. Becuase you know that no matter how pathetic your life is at least you can sleep easy knowing you avoided making this world we live on worse by not having anything to do with producing hygiene films in the fifties. Nothing. Fast forward to september 2005 - the movie Serenity is about to be released and since I'd heard good things about this Firefly thing and new people who had raved about a test screening I thought I'd rent the series so I would be up to speed on the 'Verse. And what do I find: 1000 copies of Pauly Shore is untalented, crude, and boring for 90 minutes, 10000 copies of Jim Cary is talented but still crude and boring for 90 minutes, And not one copy of Firefly. December 20th. Now I know I'm getting Serenity for christmas because it's the only think I specifically requested and the dad being is prety good about those things. But that's 5 whole days away. It's been 2 1/2 months since I'd gotten my fix and I was really desperate. So into the major video rental chain store I go. Hey it's a new release maybe they'll actually have it in stock. And maybe River will run for parliament on the lets torture some more psychic teenagers ticket. This time at least one member of the staff new what I was talking about. Of course they'd only ordered in like 2 copies so of course they were already rented out by the time they oppened their doors that morning. Now consider saturday. In honor of the Cusak film festival being held in the hidey thread I thought I'd rent Bullets over Broadway. I've never gotten arround to watching it and by a weird quirk of fate it's main character shares my name. You know I don't think I need to go on with this. do I? Utterly unrelated annoyance: Mcafee virus scan. The time to warn me that I have been infected with a trojan you can't remove that resides in a directory that my computer doesn't seem to think exists is not 11:30 on a sunday night. By the time I scrub the file path leading to where your possibly nonexistant trojan is supposedly being all trojanic, make sure my dat is up to date, and rescan my hard drive it's 1:30 and I've been up far too late without the usual acompanying pleasures associated with late night pastimes. (You know drinking, stumbling around a dance floor, and casual but protected sex.) I remain your humbly annoyed servant, David

Serenity curiousity
Monday, 20 February 2006 20:11:13

I was re-watching Serenity for the 5,000th time and was struck with something curious. Y'know that guy on Lilac, the one who said something to the effect of, "Y'all are Browncoats, eh?" Well, being hyped up on sleep-deprivation and chocolate, I may have been wrong, but he sounded awfully familiar. Kinda like Joss, almost, but with a more Southern-y accent. So....What do y'all think? Am I going moonbrain here?

A day has passed
Monday, 20 February 2006 22:38:23

The other day I got severely bent out of shape over feeling inferior to another artist. And I got to think today that getting out of whack over that was really rather strange. Leaving the pernicious road of envy out of it, only two weeks ago I never thought of myself as someone willing to call himself an artist even! I figured I had no talent in that area; and I wasn't overly bothered by it, either. So, what in the sphincter of hell got me to that point? The short answer is: River. The longer answer ends with River, but has some stuff in-between. :) I'll give you the longer, but abbreviated, version. I guess ever since I tried my hand at something artistic, which I've never done before, I have felt that expressing myself in this new fashion really became a new way for me to become connected to my dearest River. It's obvious, of course, in hindsight, but I never realized that this a probably a very common thing. The work becomes personal. And it's not just the end-result; working on it itself is so fulfilling somehow. It's almost like I'm doing it for her (which is silly, of course; but not so much if you think of it as a tribute of sorts). And all of a sudden, within the course of two weeks, I find myself so in need of doing this! I always considered art pretty to look at; and moving even, of course. But I never grasped the personal aspect of it. What it does to the maker, not just to the viewer. So, yesterday I suddenly got overwhelmed with feeling "inadequate" as I called it; except that calling it "inadequate" was in itself inadequate. :) Because what I really felt, I realize now, is that I was found lacking in Love; that others were more loving of River than I am; because of their better expression. :( I totally underestimated, or did not even see, rather, how personal this whole art thing has become to me. Because of River. A day has passed. I now know my Love for River is real. And that, as I said, I enjoy perhaps the greatest sense of fulfillment when still working on a piece. That is really all I want: to express my Love for River. And I will continue to do that; for me; because I need it. Never realized getting into this whole art thingy could be so unsettlin', though. :) But then again, everything about River unsettles me; and I'm always the happier for it. :) Mei-mei, I love you!

Bitter Spice - The Delay
Monday, 20 February 2006 23:01:35

Yeah, I got a new job, see. It seems to take up alot of my time. So I have less time in the evenings than I'd like to cram things in, and, somehow, less time at the weekends too. No idea how that works. This means that at the end of the day I am lacking in time, inspiration, and inclination. Or is it declination? I'm never sure. So, when I get back to it, I'll let y'all know.

Everybody dies alone
Monday, 20 February 2006 23:01:53

No, I am not in a morbid mood today  I just finished a new fanvid (I will post the link as soon as Illuminix uploads it to his server) and it uses only material from "Out of Gas", so I did a lot of rewatching that episode and now know it frame by frame, more or less. It is definitly one of my favorite eps, maybe _the_ favorite. The camera work is just so awsome on this one. The usage of lighting and colors as well. I almost felt bad when I had to cut into a single shot for the fanvid, because they are just so perfect, each one a work of art. The song I chose is "Real World" by Queensryche. I had not listened to it for ages and when I did yesterday, I just had to make something from it at once. This song is sooo much Firefly.

Tuesday, 21 February 2006 00:24:34

Gah! This thing is taking over my life. Seriously. So, I've had a bit of a writer's block when it came to this series (I know what happens once Serenity gets there, but it's actually getting to that point) which is why all these other little one spot fic pieces have been showing up. And today, I start writing, a nice little scene, too. When, lo and behold, what happens other than Joe, Kaylee's sweet and very happily MARRIED brother, decides to HIT ON JAYNE. WTF?!?!? Seriously, boys, stop it. It's not a slash fic. Play nice. (help me?)

Serenity - What’s in a Name? By WHR,III When Captain Malcolm Reynolds named his Firefly Class ship “Serenity” he strayed from over 800 years of naval tradition. This departure from the conventional practice of naming vessels gives us an essential glimpse into the personality of Mal and gives us a better understanding of his true nature. The process of naming a vessel is never taken lightly. In Mal’s case it may have been the most important event of his post-war life. As we shall see there are numerous reasons why the naming of his spacecraft was an important event to Mal Reynolds. Let’s consider the age-old tradition of naming Naval vessels: The Royal Navy of Great Britain had sustained a venerable tradition of naming seagoing ships. The policies and practices involved in ship naming were the products of hundreds of years of custom and tradition rather than of legislation or law. Warships always bore conventional, and often motivational, names such as Centurion, Dreadnaught, Conqueror, etc. The British usually tried to give ships of each class similar names like the classic grouping, “Invincible”, “Inflexible”, “Indomitable”, and “Indefatigable.” Starting at the beginning of the 20th Century, U.S. Naval ships were named in accordance with a system tailored to ship types. Names of states, for example, were borne by battleships. Cruisers were named for cities while destroyers came to be named for American naval leaders and heroes. This tradition, no doubt, was still intact during the great Diaspora from Earth-that-was. This brings us to Captain Reynolds’s choice of name for his 03 Firefly-class light freighter spaceship. Had he remained a traditionalist Serenity might have been named “Persistence” or “Endurance” from the last-stand attitude of the 57th Overlanders. Instead he decided on “Serenity”. At first, it seemed odd to me that the name of the most terrible and costly battle of the war between the Alliance and the Independents should be named after a word that means peace. Obviously, it was not. I imagine that Serenity Valley was just that before the war brought conflict and strife into the area. And this explains a lot about Mal Reynolds, the soldier. By naming his ship Serenity he proved that he would never forget what had happened at this battle, or for that matter, what he, and Zoë, had endured in the war itself. He would be reminded daily of both. Serenity then was named not in the tradition of battles and wars, but in the ritual of something quite different. Civilian ships are almost always named in a different manner than ships of war. They carry names of leisure, of wit, of luxury, of life and living. This gives us the most compelling reason for Mal naming his ship “Serenity.” The word serenity means the disposition free from stress or emotion or the absence of mental stress or anxiety. And this is exactly why Mal named her after this most particular state of being. She was, after all, going to be his home! This then, is the genuine reason Mal named his ship “Serenity”. This is the place where he is most comfortable, most himself, most at ease, most serene. Serenity is…… home and family! Kenosha, Wisconsin 20 Feb. 2006

Joss....just, well yeah...
Tuesday, 21 February 2006 04:59:23

It just amazes me every time I watch any Joss stuff how beautifully simple and poinant it is. I was just rewatching season 2 of Angel for the fifth time and this hit me in the right spot. Lorne: Now, I can hold a note for a long time; actually I can hold a note forever, but eventually that's just noise. It's the change we're listening for. The note coming after and the one after that. That's what makes it music. So simple and heavy duty all at the same time. Not to mention Beautifully delivered by Andy.

Howdy Y'All
Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:01:23

I've been lurking for a couple of weeks, but thought I'd finally make myself know. I've been a Firefly fan since the beginning. I missed several episodes because of real life things, but was hooked by what I did see. Personally I was a bit appalled by Fox's handling of it, out of order episodes, schedule changes. It was almost like they wanted it to fail, but I'm sure that's just paranoia. At the moment all I get is Fox so I'm hoping they don't cancel my the shows they've still got that I like, House, Bones, and Prison Break among them. I was sad to see Kitchen Confidential go. Guess that's it for now.

FanVid Challenge?
Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:54:19

I'm considering offering a prize--maybe a free On the Drift tee-shirt once their done--for the person who creates the best fanvid to a song from On the Drift. I wonder if anyone would be interested.

the cure for writers block
Tuesday, 21 February 2006 19:53:24

I had a three day weekend that I thought would be a time of much progress on the Fish Job sequel, but nada! What with the olympics and visiting friends and home demolition (weee!) and many other distractions (smallville marathon for *****sake, where are my priorities!?!) I got precisely nowhere. But now that I'm back at work and supposed to have things to do, the fiction wheels are turning. Work avoidance, the best way to get anything done!! So has anyone ever been fired for reasons of fanfic addiction? Send good thoughts toward my boss for me, just in case...

Writing vs. talking
Tuesday, 21 February 2006 21:11:13

Sometimes I forget that emotions don't come across very well in writing. There's been a few times on here where people have actually thought I was upset when I was merely commenting on something or joking around. I guess I'm so used to talking to people online that have known me for a long time. Now, it's nice to know that these people are nice and caring enough to try to cheer me up, but I really think that I need to work on getting my point across. It's a tad bit less messy that way. Maybe a better use of emoticons are in order. I think that it's more of a problem with me being socially inept than anything else though. I truly don't know how to relate to other people, especially face to face. Online I can let out the real me, mostly because I know that if there's anyone out there judging me, that they'll never actually be able to figure out who I am. That and that I feel comfortable with my pals here...kinda nice to actually belong.

Writing!
Wednesday, 22 February 2006 03:35:13

Well, here we are. I find myself a mere three stories away from finishing my insane little scheme of doing nine short, singular character studies of the BDHs. As of now, this project has topped out 100 pages. Barring the last three (Inara, Jayne, and Book, in that order) being unbelievably short, there is no way that this thing won't wind up at least 150 pages in length. No way at all. And that, my friends is shiny as shiny can be. I'd like to thank everybody who's tagged along with me so far. Muchas gracias. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, get thee hence to the BSR and read up! My ego is fragile and it needs all of the stroking it can get.

...on Stargate Atlatis... I'm behind the times, only on episode 6 of season two, but there she was, playin' a wraith female... at first look I thought, there's no way I would've picked her out without haveing seen her name in the credits.. but then she did this pouty frown thing and it was SO familiar, even beind all that makeup... and the voice of course was a dead giveaway... I'd have picked her out in a second just hearing her first word... Cool to see her in another show!

Arrrggg!!!
Wednesday, 22 February 2006 04:23:45

The computer isn't working right (it's very slow), I can't find my hmework for tomorrow and I have to find somewhere to find sheet music. It's not as easy as you might think and, to top it all off, I'm flat broke. Blahg :banghead: On the up side (st least for some of you) I managed to post a shiny new Inara wp. Go take a look and tell my what you think.

First color painting
Wednesday, 22 February 2006 05:07:49

Well..I just did my first non-computer painting in over twenty years..I'm not completely comfortable with color mediums..yet..I've colored some of my ink drawing..but that was pretty much like a coloring book compared to this..I probably wont try it again until I'm more at ease...so I'm off to the gym and then some sack time..

Bard Interview on Serenity Stuff
Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:38:48

Wow, Chris Bridges is one darn clever dude. First he writes really great articles and columns about Serenifly at his newspaper job, and then he builds a website documenting all the shiny stuff that Browncoats can want. (Dear family, my birthday wish list is at www.SerenityStuff.com.) Then it turns out that he comes up with really great interview questions, as I learned when he interviewed me about my band's recent album, On the Drift: Music Inspired by Firefly and Serenity. The interview is at

Wow
Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:13:04

Never done a blog entry. Don't know what to make of them. Guess I will figure as I go. Having found the Browncoats I am amazed at the variety of them. Not what I would ever call consistant. But I like that. Makes for more diversity, and gods know we need that. Maybe that is what makes Firefly and Serenity so appealing. It crosses all barriers installed by society and economics. It brings a center of humanity to all those it touches. And maybe I should just stop typing. Such tripe.

"Finding Serenity"
Wednesday, 22 February 2006 22:29:58

I liked this book, it gave me alot of info on characters, or rather the tools to gain the info. I think though only 'hard core' firefly fans, as my brother called it, will really like this book. But all in all i liked it... one of my favoriet bit from it was "She can kill you and make you like it." regarding Inara. When i read that i laughed. Also a few wise words regarding 'freedom' and the characters, I love to read about how others see the characters. Specially when pointing out things i would never see on my own. It was all in all refreshing also it has all the chinies words used during the show translated and how to say them... I am proud and some what ashamed that i now know how to say that one line inara used in 'shindig'. Yes i am obsessed, yes i like to read the characters. 'Its what i do' I guess I just like to so i can understand why they do what they do. Also so i can write stuff, but i never find any thing good enough to post. and when i do i post it and then never finish... maybe i will write one shots. OH wow i am so off topic! ok umm 'Finding Serenity' neat book ummm, i liked it, but its not for every one.

Operation: Duper
Wednesday, 22 February 2006 22:40:19

As in super-duper. Actually, that's not a very good name, at all. Uh...Operation:...hell, screw it, I'm no good at this. If you have a good Operation name for going right over the :censored: heads of the movie theaters around my college and showing Serenity at a theater on top of the most unlikely building to house anything creative, aka the English Building, please submit. In the meantime, I'm just gonna figure out how to do it.

Really funny movie
Thursday, 23 February 2006 06:35:32

Just letting ya guys know about this really cool movie I'm currently watching. I know this isn't about firefly or serenity it's just a really funny musical/zombie movie. The title is Dead and Breakfast. If you tear yourself out of the 'verse for a couple of hour you should check it out!

When is someone a Firefly fan?
Thursday, 23 February 2006 07:21:20

When is someone officially considered a Firefly fan? How much must someone love Firefly before they can call themselves a fan, or a Browncoat? A. Interest: You’ve started watching the series. You really like it and want to watch more. B. Mild Interest: You’ve seen all fourteen episodes and the movie, you love them but you haven’t watched them more than once yet. Maybe you’ve watched your favorite episode again. C. Medium Interest: You’ve seen all the episodes, and the movie. You’ve seen most of the episodes more than once and you are continuing to re-watch episodes when you have time. D. High Interest: You’ve already watched every episode, including the pilot, more than four times, and you now watch an average of three episodes a week. E. Obsessed: You’ve watched every episode more times than you can count with your fingers, including the movie. You love anything Firefly related and you frequently visit the fireflyfans website. F. Helplessly Obsessed: You are completely obsessed! You can’t stop thinking about Firefly/Serenity, you’ve watched every episode and the movie more times than you have the mental capacity to remember, you practically live on the fireflyfans website, you watch an average of an episode and a half every day, and you wish you had yet more time to spend in the ‘verse. You can't get enough Firefly! G. Self Pronounced: You consider yourself to be a Firefly fan. In your own opinion, by your own viewpoint, you consider yourself a fan—doesn’t matter how much you’ve watched the show or how into it you are, you just consider yourself a fan. H. Any: Any of the above. Just curious what people think  So... what is it? Which one makes you a fan? What do you think?

Thanks everyone.
Thursday, 23 February 2006 08:57:54

I'm not going to get into the gory details here, but my life hasn't exactly been going super lately. Just figured out that I've wasted an academic year, so no graduate school next year for me. Don't know where I'm gonna live after Apr. etc But, here's the pretty much only good part in my life right now; you guys. Everytime life starts going south, I always seems to gravitate to posting more/being more involved here. And there you all are, your nice, friendly, supportive selves. Probably not even knowing it, because it's just you. So, for making my life easier, thanks. You guys are the best.

We're number 6! We're number 6!
Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:37:02

Actually, I think Tricia Helfer is #6. (Why are women named after numbers so sexy?) No, really, though, an album of music inspired by Firefly and Serenity just hit #6 on the CDBaby charts. Check it out:

Cowboy hats
Thursday, 23 February 2006 15:11:38

Ah, yes. Today I go back to work at the rodeo. Boots, jeans, and way too many hats. Funny, I used to like cowboy hats, but now I look at the people wearing them kinda sideways. Of course it doesn't help that I am also wearing a hat. I know I am not evil, I am just drawn that way. I am still trying to figure out who I am in the 'verse. Sadly, I think I am most like Jayne...not that it is a bad thing, I just know I have a bit more smarts than him. But the whole junkyard bulldog thing does kinda strike a cord in me. Maybe tomorrow I will compare how I am like Zoe.

Sleep Good
Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:16:56

Tired. No sleep last night. Head's fuzzy. Time to sleep and dream of Mal. (it took me 5 min. to type this properly) (thud) zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

This one is for everyone
Thursday, 23 February 2006 18:41:27

Ok as everyone in the verse now knows things are looking up a bit for me. But just because everything's shiny now doesn't mean that I am going to forget everyone's kindness of the last few months. I want this blog to be dedicated to *everyone* who in the past has commented on my blogs, or on my stories, or chatted to me in the chat room, or just tagged me to tell me that I mean something. It's been a long, rough couple of months and I'm not lying when I say that everyone's kind words and advice have truly helped me through this. I'm so proud to be a brown coat, thank you everyone for everything and if there is anything I can ever do to help any of you out, just say the word. This entry comes with a special chocolate-chip cookie to say thank you and that every brown coat in the verse is special. I hope you guys never forget that. I'll keep everyone posted as to my moving, right now it's slow but steadily progressing. Also it's my birthday in a little over a month- my 21st, I'm so excited  thanks again everybody, I'll have some more fic up soon and I hope everyone has the shiniest weekend immaginable.

Quarter-Million Words!
Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:45:40

Hi All, This will likely be of no interest to anyone but myself but with the latest chapter my ongoing FanFic story arc that started with Death or Glory, continued with Wolfpack then Here Be Dragons and now continues with Horse, Foot and Artillery is now over 250,000 words long! The fact that anyone is still reading my stuff after a quarter million words is probably the only real revelation here  Jon (Hotpoint)

Spreading the Virus: Recruiting
Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:57:24

That's it. I've done it. No more whinging, no more moping. I'm gonna do something about it. If Joss could film a few minutes of something and get a movie advertised and doing as well as it is, I can do this. Mal held Serenity Valley. I'm gonna take it back. I may be new, may be unsure where this is gonna go, but it's starting and it's starting now. The virus is gonna spread. Chatting and recruiting can only get us so far. We need to do something more than this, get PROactive rather than sitting around on a board complaining and wistfully aching for the old days when Firefly was on TV. Waiting with bated breath for a sequel that may never come. I don't want to be pacified with a comic series. I don't want novellas to keep me happy. I want the show back where it was. After all, aren't WE the ones who WATCH it??? We're the ones who spend our hard earned cash on things they make. We're the ones who go all googlie eyed over the actors. We just want a simple show. Browncoats will speak and be heard. By everyone.

My story
Friday, 24 February 2006 00:00:24

I recently realized that for a browncoat, I am very strange. My first experience with firefly was when it was on tv for the first time. I would sit down and watch it while doing my homework, at least on nights that I was home when it was on. Then it was cancelled, but I really didn't notice that it was. Then serenity hit the theatres and one of my friends told me that there was a firefly movie. That got me thinking "I know I watched firefly, I know I liked it, but I can't remember a thing about it" so I decided to rent the dvds and watch the series again before going to see the movie. Unfortunately, by the time I had fallen in love with the series again (amazing how everything came flooding back when I saw the opening credits) serenity was no longer in theatres and I had to wait for it to come to dvd so I could rent it. I saw that around Christmas. It wasn't earth-shattering, and I certainly picked up on the continuity errors (when those that were with me didn't, even though we had just finished watching the series before sticking in serenity), but I think I'm still in shock over WAIT.... DON'T GO ON IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE!!! IT'S NOT SAFE!!! SERIOUSLY, DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE SPOILERS THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE, TURN BACK NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!! Wash's death. I had accidentally run into a spoiler, so I knew that he died in the movie (Hence the dramatic warnings above), but it still gave me a shock. To go like that...no warning, no nothing, mid-sentance even....I literally felt as if that pole had hit me, especially after the way Zoe reacted. I still can't even THINK of heart of gold without getting all sad now. After all this, it amazes me that there are browncoats that watched the movie first and still got hooked on the series. It just seems crazy that after seeing (what is currently) the end, that anyone would be able to watch the beginning without tainted eyes. Anyways, I've gone off topic. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Kids!
Friday, 24 February 2006 04:28:41

So, after supper my 18 year old son picks up my box set of Firefly and looks at it for a bit before we have this conversation (or something like it): Me: "What's up?" Him: "I don't know. Um. How long is each episode?" Me: "45 minutes, except for the first one because it's 2 episodes, so it's an hour and a half." Him: "Hmm...do I want to watch it because I'm so busy doing...nothing." Laughter from both of us. Him again: "Is it any good?" Laughing. Me: "What do you think?" Laughing. Now bear in mind this is the same son who went to see the BDM with me at the theater, and enjoyed it! He KNOWS it's good! He's just being ornery. Anyway, he then disappears with my DVD's. (He still lives at home, so he didn't go far with them.) Four hours later, and I haven't seen or heard from him, so I go lookin'. He's got Episode 1 on (Kaylee's first big moment) and I ask, "So, is it any good?" He laughs and says "Yes, but I pulled a Fox. I watched 'Train Job' 'Bushwhacked' 'Shindig' & 'Safe' before I wondered why does disc 2 have 4 episodes and disc 1 have 3? Then I realized I hadn't watched episode 1!" The sound you heard was me smacking him upside the head.:bash: He just came to talk to me. Finished ep. 1, but is going to wait to watch more because once he's "watched them all I'll have nothing to do." His first comment: "Is that woman a whore?" "Well, yeah, but she's a high-class whore." "But she's still a whore!" Ah, my own Mal. We compared notes, and he loves the same bits we all do! So my job as a parent is done. I've converted my son to be a Browncoat! *Yes! Fist pump.* He tells me there's an article on dig.com about releasing a DVD with extras. Will have to check that out to see what he's talking about. ETA: The article at digg.com was about the release of "Done the Impossible." No new news. :disappointed:

Gorram scanner's making fun of me again.......
Friday, 24 February 2006 04:35:29

I don't know if any of y'all's scanner does this but for no apparent reason that I can discern the blasted thing will attempt to straighten perfectly straight drawings..randomly sharpen or blur parts of the image..or switch settings in mid scan..I've tried disabling all the smart features..rescanning the same drawing sometimes helps sometimes doesn't..I think it might be a compatibility problem ..but it's late and I don't really feel like messing with it anymore.......besides I'm on the lookout for a scanner that will take 11 x 17 drawings anyway...and tomorrow's payday....

Strange firefly-esq things at Aldis…
Friday, 24 February 2006 05:54:25

Ok I’ve noticed three firefly related things at Aldi’s Stores (you know those discount supermarkets where you need to use a quarter to get a shopping cart). 1st Ariel Cooking Spray. I’ve used this product at it does the job… 2nd Beaumonde coffee. Haven’t used it, but it comes in a crappy paper carton- not very useful when you need to turn it in to a transmitter to broadcast a fake distress signal. And 3rd Chinese writing on bag of microwave popcorn. I don’t know what it means but here is my lame MS Paint copy of the four symbols…

What I Say As Opposed To What I Think #12,356: Work Study
Friday, 24 February 2006 09:00:28

For those that don't know (yes, I know there's a lot of you, and I haven't exactly been around much) Someone says something to me, and propiety dictates that I don't say what I'm thinking. I just save it, and then subject all of you to it. Sorry. Also, since this is a work study...there will be objectionable language. At Work (like all of these) RO: Mmmmm..Eliza Dushku...I'd like to uppercut her taint. Me: (Censored mental image here...) BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Taint puncher! House: I farted in my coveralls before we came outside. (open collar) Yeah...its still there. Me: (You know, you don't really have to tell everyone when you bust ass. I know I don't) Yeah, I did the same thing yesterday. (Damn my need to be accepted!) Vampire: Why do I have to do that? Me: (Why are you giving me lip, you little dark goth shit? Just fucking do it before I split your greasy head and steal your fake teeth...bitch) Just do it please...Thank you. RO: You watchin' Red vs Blue. That HALO shit ain't funny. Me: (Watch your fucking mouth, philistine!) It is too (Mumbling...what can I do...its my boss...Peckerhead) Pant: I keep trying to rent Serenity. Its never in at Blockbuster. Me: (Noooooooooo!!! Goddamn Blockbuster! Get your heads in the game!) You can't borrow mine. You know...looking at most of these, it appears that my thoughts are growing increasingly hostile. Hmmmm. Guess I better keep it in... Bye bye.

Noms closed
Friday, 24 February 2006 13:57:52

If you hadn't realized it yet, the nominations for this year's Strawberries are closed. What happens now (in case you haven't visited the website): The nominations are now before our panel of judges and over the next month or so, a list of finalists in each group will be determined. At that point, fandom wide voting on the finalists will occur to determine the winners. So, there will be no announcement on the winners till april at the earliest, May would be more realistic. Announcements will occur in the future on the boards to when voting on finalists open. At a date in the not too distant future, I will be posting a list of all the nominees on the website.

Highs and lows

COUNTDOWN: 3 DAYS TO SERENITY R2 DVD It's here! And yet, it's not. :crap: On a recommendation, I ordered a Region 2&4 edition of Serenity from cd-wow and it finally arrived yesterday. Yay! I was able to watch the BDM for the first time since October and it ROCKED. Also watched the outtakes (LMFAO) and the deleted scenes, and the R2&4 documentary 'A Filmmaker's Journey'. US 'Coats, if you don't have this yet, you need it in your life! And so we come to the problem: Disc 2, with all its exclusive Jossy goodness, won't play. It's meant to be Region 2&4, and thus compatible with my UK R2 player, but no joy. I checked its region coding on my PC and it came up R4 only. Ruttin' hell! Anyone else had this problem? :disappointed: Anyway, I called the good folks at cd-wow first thing this morning, and they've dispatched another copy to me in the hope that this is a one-off error. Should take about a week, so now the waiting begins. In the meantime, I'll be picking up my UK edition on Monday. It's not all doom and gloom!

Despondent today.... it happens.
Friday, 24 February 2006 14:45:33

I don't often get into this blogging stuff. I'm not very good at it and I usually look back and think I'm whinging. And we all know that accomplishes nothing. But I thought perhaps if I poured myself out where I could see it, I could quit tearing up like a silly. I have been this way several times now ABOUT Firefly. This isn't real life stuff, this is sadness connected to my feelings about a tv show, gorramit? I've never done this before about a non- real life thing, so it throws me for a loop everytime I do it. I have been without regular sleep now since Monday, as I'm "tendin' to sick folks", both my husband and daughter had surgery this week, so I'm assuming I'm gettin' a little punchy from lack of sleep. So I'm sure this has a true bearing on my sadness this a.m. I miss our crew, and every post on FFF.net, particularly the one of Joss' interview where he doesn't sound too positive about the return of the ship and crew just send me back to tears. Gonna be one of those days I guess, where I'm gonna have to "pull myself straight" as my Dad used to say and face the day head on and hope I get better. I'm still so proud to be a Browncoat and I'm glad I can come here and join in with everyone. Still holdin' - FollowMal

It's the end of the week (as we know it)
Friday, 24 February 2006 15:59:48

Well, I am going offline until Monday. Yeah. I really need to get my own computer and access to the internet at home. I don't know how I will manage without this place until then. At least the rodeo is still going on to keep me busy. Last night as I was listening to the commentary on Out of Gas, I got to thinking. Who would become the new pilot of Serenity? I mean, post BDM, who would take the controls? Would it be too painful to search for another pilot? Or would River be able to do it? How do you replace a beloved part of your soul? I have yet to figure that out. Rae PS Fencingmaster. Nice to know there are others out there like me. Rodeo and horses. Can't live with out them.

Last day

Plot Summaries from the Wild West
Friday, 24 February 2006 17:58:13

If some of my favorite westerns were made into Firefly episodes how would they play out? Here are a few examples… # 1. Jeremiah Johnson I have added a fictionalized scene from this episode below. Original scene: Will Geer lures a grizzly bear into a mountain cabin for our mountain man Jeremiah Johnson (played by Robert Redford). Firefly episode: “Vendetta” Plot Summary A freighter captain who wishes to live his life away from the Alliance becomes the unwilling object of a long vendetta by Reavers when he proves to be the match of their warriors in one-to-one combat on the frontier. EXT. PLANETSIDE DAY Mal Reynolds is seen waving his arms and running as fast as he can towards the open bay door of Serenity. His brown coat flies behind him. His holster is empty and dust is following him in large plumes. QUICK CUT TO: Disgusting blood-encrusted Reaver chasing closely behind Mal as he runs towards the ship. QUICK CUT TO: Mal getting closer to the open bay door. MAL “All manner of trouble coming your way”, he shouts into his communicator. INT. CARGO BAY SERENITY Mal enters the cargo bay running at a high rate of speed. He runs through the bay, up the gantry stairs and out of camera shot. ENTER Reaver who looks stage left, looks stage right and when not seeing his victim growls. CUT TO: River Tam’s ballet-fu drop-kick combat boot hitting the Reaver in the face and sending him sprawling to the floor in a heap. She stands defiantly over the body with Zoë’s communicator gripped tightly in her hand. ZOE From the catwalk over the cargo bay looking down at River. “How many Reaver’s you expect to bait today, sir?” MAL Standing beside her. “Every last one of ‘em!” FADE TO BLACK # 2. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Plot Summary Firefly episode: “The Man Who Shot Adelai Niska” An elderly Doctor Simon Tam returns to the metropolis-city of Skyplex to attend the funeral of his friend, Malcolm Reynolds. To a journalist, who’s wondering what the doctor is doing in Skyplex, he tells how his career started as “the man who shot Adelai Niska.” As a young doctor he went to Skyplex, where he met his wife Kaylee and Captain Malcolm Reynolds. Then he met the greatest bandit of the region, Adelai Niska.... # 3. The Cheyenne Social Club Plot Summary Firefly episode: “The Nandi Social Ranch” Mal is working as a rogue bandit for very little money with his friend Zoe when he gets word an old Independent officer has left him The Nandi Social Ranch. He and Zoe fly for nearly an AU to his inheritance only to find he is now the owner of a first class brothel. Wait! This one has already been done! Sort of….. See Season 1: Episode 14 Heart of Gold # 4 Tombstone Plot Summary Firefly episode: “Tombstone” After success cleaning up the frontier, Mal Reynolds moves to Tombstone planet, and wishes to get rich in obscurity. He meets his crew there, as well as his old army friend Zoë. A band of outlaws that call themselves The Reavers are causing problems in the region with various acts of random violence, rape and cannibalism and inevitably come into confrontation with Reynolds and the crew of Serenity, which leads to a shoot-out. # 5 Dances With Wolves Plot Summary Firefly episode: “Dances with Jayne” Jayne Cobb is dubbed a hero (again) after he accidentally leads Alliance troops to a victory during the war. He requests a position on the frontier, but finds it mostly deserted. He soon finds out he is not alone and meets a ring of criminals and joins up with them. Cobb quickly makes friends with the ring, but discovers during a hold up gone bad that he would rather work elsewhere when a better offer is proposed. He gradually earns the respect of the Serenity crew. # 6 The Searchers Plot summary Firefly episode: “The Searchers” Malcolm Reynolds, an ex-Independent soldier back home from the war, finds that his family has been massacred and his niece captured by the Alliance. He vows to bring her back and kill every one of the blue-hands that did this. He buys a Firefly

Since Cedric from the Bedlam Bards asked if anyone would like to make a song vid for one of their Firefly related songs a few days ago: Here it comes. It is a tribute to our hero and mighty creator  I used stuff from the Firefly DVD specials and from two Serenity trailers. It is about the show, the cancellation, the fans, the movie and, well, about Joss. Check it out on my homepage:

My Alternate Universe
Saturday, 25 February 2006 15:46:48

Okay, so the past few weeks have seen some interesting news about possible returns of Firefly. Sure, they've been debunked, and the Whedon has posted and said that the rumours are untrue... But I go for the whole "reality is what you make of it" thing. Quantum physics (or whatever it's called) posits that objects only "exist" as clouds of potential until a)they come into contact with another object or b)you look at them. (If a tree falls in the forest and there's no one to hear it: there is no tree :)(Or whadda I know, they didn't have any classes in Advanced Theoretical Quantum Mechanics in art school.) So, given that I am essentially a reality machine, I have decided to take matters into my own hands re: getting our little show back on the small screen. To this end I have decided to create an alternate reality wherein Fox never cancelled the show. We're now into Season 4 (everyone had a nice long happy vacation and also had to take some time off the series to film the movie trilogy.) Serenity won an Oscar for best movie, and a whole bunch of other awards (including, oddly enough, one for best animated feature film...) Joss Whedon has been voted King of All Space and Time in a unanimous landslide. Everybody uses the words "shiny," "gorramn," and "palaver" on a regular basis. Suspenders are back in fashion. There is rampant black market trade in tiny beagles. Every ringtone, everywhere, on every phone, is either the Firefly theme or the Hero of Canton. Oh, and I'm happily married to Kaylee. (Not Jewel Staite, the lovely, talented and not-so-single actress. What do you think I am, nuts?:) There was a wierd cross-dimensional power flux thingy... had to do with quarks and electrons, I don't know, but it's my reality and that's just the way it is. Now, due to the Intergalactic Riots of 2004, Fox has been burned to the ground. In it's place is the 24-hour Firefly Television Network. Thanks to recent advances in time-field warp anamolie fields, it only takes like 30 seconds to film an entire television season, so there's always something new on TV. And lest I forget, the Special Hell that all the child molesters and Network Execs went to is now a theme park somewhere in Wisconsin; so everyone can eat ice cream and point and laugh as certain individuals have unspeakable things done to them. (Often involving that wicked-looking snaky thing from War Stories.) All are welcome to come join my alternate dimension. I believe I've managed to rig some sort of extra-dimensional reality portal thingy, and I think most of the time it actually works quite well. There's only occasionally a fatal malfunction. The water's great, and there's plenty of protein bars for everyone. Anyways, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. Now if you'll excuse me, I believe I spot an Ice Planet (tm) with my name on it. :stupid:

Hello.

I'm new here, but not new to FireFly. Love it. I also love making digital images... If you have a request, as long as it can be done with existing photos, just ask and I'll do. My only request is comments. I love feedback. Well, nice to meet all of you.

Okay so I've been reading a story called Bed and Wine by Kaynara, and if any of you are Mal/Inara shippers then this is a good story. It's not just about them though, and it's definetly not just romance. All the characters have big parts, especially River. There are parts where the writing could be better, but by the time you're a few chapters in you care so much about the characters that you just want to know what happens next. Give it a read and leave her a review if you're of a mind.

Shiny is rapidly losing her shine
Sunday, 26 February 2006 00:44:15

Wow folks it's been an up and down, rough and tumble couple of months and finally it's all starting to take it's toll. A few things have happened: I found out that going to school over there will cost $15000 a year, at least and I can't work or get student loans. I found out that work over there is actually easier to find when I get there. I found out that I can study and get a qualification here, that'll take a year at the least and improve my chances of getting a job over there, but that's another 13 months *stuck* away from the one person that makes my worth living. I don't know how much more I can take, if the verse keeps throwing not just obstacles but massive trials I don't know what I'm supposed to do. Wait five years until we can get married? I'm trying so hard but this *Hurts* and I can endure a Lot and not complain but this is the worst feeling ever. I'm miserable here and I hate every day that he and I are apart. I know everyone is going to tell me that absence makes the heart grow fonder, that we're young and have our whole lives ahead of us, that what doesn't kill me makes me stronger. Last night one of my friends even quoted firefly to make me try to feel better, you know that thing Inara says "This is just a moment in time step aside and let it pass." I almost hit them. I know that this has to get better, and in my sane moments I know that we have the rest of our lives together to make up for this. That I'm only young and this is life experience. Well I've had my life experience in spades. I've had so much life experience that I'm rapidly getting sick of living. This was supposed to be easier than this. I know life wasn't meant to be easy but it wasn't supposed to be this hard. I thought saying goodbye to him was the hardest thing I've ever done, until I tried living without him. I'm just so lost and it hurts so much and I know that I'm being completely irrational but right now I just don't care. I miss everything and everywhere I look I see us and it rips my heart out. I know it's not healthy and I'm trying everything I can to stay positive, I really am but this isn't working and I just keep thinking that I can't lose him and I can't lose the motivation to keep working at this. I have had so much stuff piled on top of me the last few years you would think that whoever's running the show would cut me some slack, and they did for a while, when he was here it was all bearable and ok and there wasn't anything I couldn't face, because he's my Paladin and he takes care of me but now I'm alone and I'm scared that I can't do this, that one by one I'm breaking every promise I made to him. I told him I'd be there for him, no matter what and how can I be there when I'm here. I guess what I'm saying is that right now everything hurts and it's bad for me and I don't know what to do. I really am lost in the woods, it doesn't get much worse than this for me. I don't really know what I need or why I wrote this, it's not like anyone can actually help me. But thanks for listening as always, I hope that next time I have something sunnier to report.

Bushwhacked
Sunday, 26 February 2006 01:15:40

The other day I posted about seeing a small girl dancing, reflected in River's helmet, in that space scene in Bushwhacked, where she's gazing at the stars. Got some... unexpected reactions. Someone said he saw in me "a hopeless romantic who just hasn't had the harsh realities of the world beat him into oblivion yet." Wasn't offended or anything; surprised me a bit, is all. Because this is really who I am. Given the option to see a helmet, or a dancing girl, I want to see the latter; I choose to see the latter, rather. I've seen it happen before; people get somewhat irritated with me when I go on about the beauty of the River persona. I guess because they feel reality is less stellar than the stars I dream on. But, honestly, I know reality is grim; I'm living it. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. Seen it all. But, as I was told, one fine day, "You just need to look with better eyes." I try that. I need that. I need to believe in River, and everything she stands for. Because, without River, this world is simply too overwhelming for me. "Little souls, big world," as she said so beautifully herself. That saying really gets to me, every time. ... And people wonder why I Love River; and I wonder why they're not ... Now, by far the greater irony is, that the Bushwhacked picture itself, in which I chose to see a beauty, regardless of whether it was objectively really there, is depicting precisely that! It shows River, gazing at the stars, full of amazement and awe, whereas, objectively, one might argue there's not much to see. Like Simon; he looks at River, confuzzled at why she marvels so. To see the world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower; to hold eternity in the palm of your hand, and infinity in an hour! But now I get to the part that really chokes me up. Because my sweet River, a mentally traumatized 17-year-old girl, who certainly had the harsh realities of the world try and beat her into oblivion, she, of all people, (still) sees the beauty! She, who said she was found broken, is, at heart, least unbroken of all. /me, pauses to *cry* And that, my dear friends, gives me all manner of hope. Because if she, under those circumstances, can still see the beauty of life, then so can I.

Saturday... busy, busy, busy...
Sunday, 26 February 2006 05:35:26

Well, fellow fans, it's has been a real tough day..My job requires me to be on call every third weekend..and this was mine..talk about problems..I've had some of everything today. From installing waterheaters to restringing furnace elements, I don't think I've sat for more than thirty minutes all day.. It's 11:15 pm and I'm just now setting down..Haven't had a chance to do any drawing today (gasps of disappointment echo throughout fandom) I'll try to make it up to you guys with some requests tomorrow.. COMICBOOK UPDATE..My comic is just not turning out like I thought it would ...Maybe you fanfic writers can help me out..I seem to have written myself into a corner and can't for the life of me figure out where to go next...I've got several scenes plotted but getting to those scenes in a coherent story is baffling me...as I've said before..I'm not a writer, I'm a drawer (the pencil kind not the sock kind) Well I'd better get some sleep, and judging by the above pun, it's way past due...'Night, all...

Netflix and some stuff received
Sunday, 26 February 2006 18:23:56

First off I'd like to thank everybody for their kind comments and advice. After a bit of hemming and hawwing I did decide to sign up for the Netflix. I signed up for the 1 disc at a time cheapo option we'll se how that goes. Secondly some may know that I had an order for some Firefly stuff at amazon. It arrived containing The Firefly soundtrack, Serenity: Those Left Behind the TPB, MASH a novel of three army doctors, and a free sample of deoderant. To quote Strong Bad, "Ought I to be offended?" Just because I'm ordering geeky sci fi stuff I smell? The noive of 'em. Anyway mini-review time. Firefly Soundtrack: Good stuff though I wish they had included "The Hero of Canton." I supose that it would have deflated the mood or something but they could have tagged it on at the ned I think without it getting in the way of the serious composing of the rest of the disc. Serenity: Those Left Behind. I think I prefer the comic books for ease of reading but if you don't already have those this book compiles them all with all 9 of the covers spread out through the book as full page portraits. If you do have all 9 covers then the only thing new here is the introduction by Nathan (which is good.) Of course if you have all 9 of the covers already (like me) then you will buy this anyway because you are a rabid completist. MASH a novel of three army doctors: This is where it all began. Both gentler (in parts) and more viscious (in other parts) than the movie this episodic psuedo-memoir of life as a draftee doctor in the korean war is entertaining and ocasionally thought provoking. I haven't tried the deoderant yet.

Just a little bit excited... (*tries to stop hyperventilating!*)
Sunday, 26 February 2006 21:00:05

Yes folks, tomorrow is the 27th of February and all you UK browncoats know what that means... SERENITY IS RELEASED ON REGION 2 DVD! Having patiently waited so much longer than everyone else in the world our loyalty will finally be rewarded  with some thrilling heroics of our very own :blast:. I've had my Amazon dispatch email so I know my pre-order is on its way and wow i'm excited  (did I mention that already?) Admitedly the special features won't be a patch on the Region 1, just like the Firefly box set lacks the extra 'trans-atlantic' flair,:finger: but still, I've waited so patiently. The cynical part of me is now acknowledging that in less than a week I'll be trying to purchase the region 1 having despaired at the lack of a decent commentary/deleted scenes etc, and i'll probably be banging my head against a brick wall at the delivery costs :banghead: but that does not detract from this very special moment. I'm so excited! (I'm also trying to work out if *giddy* is an acceptable term!)

Aaaaarrrrrrrggggg!!! @#$@#$@ pf! Updated

Anyway, back to work *sigh* EDIT: It works now  Thanks to someone on misc _at_ openbsd _dot_ org who pointed me a right direction.

Music is Good
Monday, 27 February 2006 01:24:25

A friend of mine just bought me the Serenity soundtrack. I almost kissed him. Shhh...he doesn't know that. I love music. I love FF/Serenity. Now I can combine two of my obsessions. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeee!! ... ... This might not bee a good thing. People may be frightened.

Nathan Fillion's Tattoo
Monday, 27 February 2006 01:47:54

Okay, so this is driving me a little crazy. What is that tattoo that Nathan Fillion has? On FF it just looks like a black blob. I saw a picture of it from when he was on another show, but the picture was blurry and the thing just looked like a bunch of lines. So yeah I should probably make this a thread, but I'm wet, tired, and too lazy to do it. I'd say sue me but in this day and age I'm afraid somebody actually would.

Arrgghh Amazon!!
Monday, 27 February 2006 09:29:32

Still waiting for my Serenity TPB from Amazon.co.uk. they are still claiming it's not published and won't be until March 31st!! in the future I'll just buy directly from the source. I did mail Dark Horse this morning asking whether there is a seperate Europe release date so hopefully they'll get Amazon to get a move on.

Wonder Bread
Monday, 27 February 2006 12:01:10

Yesterday I blogged about choosing to see the beauty of things. I have since had several reactions to it, in private. One, of a friend of mine, was both very beautiful and, in a way, very sad. Beautiful, because she was touched by the child-like wonder I can look at things (which, in turn, touched me); and sad, because I saw she doesn't think she's capable of doing that herself. :( This blog, therefore, is dedicated to her. Because today I received a gift. From Kayna. She made the most gorgeous River wallpaper, just for me. The Bushwhacked theme, with River marveling at the 'verse. And she no less put a dancing River in the reflection of River's helmet! From "Safe." And I now wish I were a poet, so I could pass on the thrill I feel when reflecting upon the magnitude of what she has done for me. Because of River? you ask. No, because of Kayna. :) She delivered a masterpiece of art, yes; and she invested her soul in that work; and that makes it an ever shiny object in space. But the real gift of hers is, that I can now turn to my friend, and tell her there's beauty in humanity; and not because I need it to be there, or choose to see it, but simply because it's really there! Right here! For all to witness! The gift from Kayna is like a loaf of bread, that I can unendingly break pieces off, and hand out to whoever wants one. Wonder bread, at that, literally. One I rigged especially so, that if you have a lump, it will engrave upon your heart these simple words: "You asked me what a man like me believes for? This is it!"

I am gone, yet I am here...
Monday, 27 February 2006 14:46:42

Life has been the lowest level of suck-tastic for me for the past few months. There are a few errant rays of sun breaking through the black clouds, but not many. I've been absent because it's not my way to expose my friends and family to the ugly thing I become when I am like this. Trust me. You really don't want the unwarranted abuse. I've felt your outpouring of concern and love in your private emails and IMs, and I thank you. When things are better, you'll see me return 'my old self' once more. I hope. Chris

The Hero of Canton
Monday, 27 February 2006 16:46:30

Well, I have officially fallen. Walking around the rodeo gounds singing "The Hero of Canton" certainly did not gain me any new boyfriends. But it did have people questioning my sobriety (and I was stone sober). I don't know which is worse, the fact that I was singing, or the fact that I was making up new words. I already sing the opening song, do I really need to sing about "Jayne"? What is it about this verse that has so entralled me? Is it some new virus? Did Joss have then put in subliminal messaging? Gods help me, cause no one else will.

Tension Tamer
Monday, 27 February 2006 16:48:22

I admit it. I lost it today. The frustration of the worlds longest job search got to me when Dice decided that my job search would be satisfied by a "Fire Protection Engineering" position. So, I responded to the postion with this: Hi Sheila, I am applying for this job with absolutely none of the qualifications. I am doing this because I have not had any luck applying for jobs where I might actually excel. I have found that some sort of tension release is regularly required in order to keep up the search. I apologize that I have chosen to waste your time by responding to your advertisement. I do wonder how a fire protection engineering position got included in my job search; but, it is probably just an infelicitous choice of keywords on one or both of our parts. My guess it is the phrase “project leadership” that got your job included rather than mechanical design. But that is the peril of keyword search programs. They don’t catch things like, “I have no experience preparing reports to document the results of design studies, trade studies, failure analyses, and test programs.” Although I do have lots of experience preparing and quantifying studies in the software and systems arena, I am sure they would not be of use for your position. I would like to suggest that you watch the DVDs of the Firefly series and the movie “Serenity”. If you have not seen them, they are very good and might serve as a positive out of what might otherwise be a waste of your time. Again, I apologize for wasting your time. Have a nice day. Ralph Naylor  Received this reply: Dear Ralph, I rec'd your resume in response to my ad on Dice for Fire suppression engineer. My co-workers and I had a good laugh at your frankness. Believe me we know about built up tension in this job. However, rest assured that many people send their resumes who are not a fit. I always appreciate resumes of contractors who are available. If I find something more appropriate I will let you know. Good luck in your search!! Thanks again, Marie

Serenity in UK
Monday, 27 February 2006 18:49:34

So the time has finally dawned when I could reach out and grasp the greatest DVD ever in my mortal hands or blue. My excitement was immense this morning as I awoke and immediately thought 'Serenity' in my head. I rushed out and bought my copy, urging others to emulate these actions for wholesome family fun. My aim is, as well as every other browncoat in the 'verse, to pass on the word of Firefly and Serenity to make the fan basis bigger, longer and more obese. I have done my duty as a browncoat to take my friends and girlfriend to see Serenity and I am also buying my girlfriend and one of my friends Serenity this week. I have passed on word to at least 20 people and advertise by wearing my blue sun t-shirt. I will keep buying merchendise, and buying people the DVD's as I'm sure other people will too. This is the time for the revolution, we can bring the pheonix back from the ashes. Peace out brethren and remember.. you can't stop the signal

....... why.... HEY there :)
Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:10:14

Hey everyone!!! Nice to see all the happy smiles again!!! My trip to Brisbane was as good as it could of been although I'm now suffering from some sort of sickness and I have no ide what the hell it could be! ---> You see, as my plane was landing my ears like blocked and my right ear has yet to pop (it's been like a week) and it's driving me insane!!!! And now, I have this rash on my feet, hands, neck & elbows and the doctor said they were bites... Umm yeh, wow those critters are picky with my skin - OBVIOUSLY they don't like my legs (and my legs are hot!!! DAMN YOU!!!) :banghead: what a quack!!! I'm going again this arvie to another doctor... Hmmm enough of my sickness LOL! Brisbane was fine - it was sOo hot! But I was pretty much "under the weather" *wink wink nudge nudge* the whole time... While I was sloshied, I decided to make a face mask with some avocado (from that nights salad... hahaha sOo gronky!), lemon, honey, toner, clearasil and some commercially made mud masks... it was AWESOME!!! I recommend it lol!!! I'll be going up there in about a couple of days -it's my brothers 18th... they grow up sOo fast don't they? It will be a little weird, he has kinda changed and there is nothing I can really say (as a speech) because he has let me down so much... it's heartbreaking thinking about it! But nonetheless, as a big sister, I want to give a nice little speech but I do need some help - I've been going through a couple of things but nothing seems to work... My dad gave a crappy speech for mine... *ahem* "Let's just hope she doesn't run up the phone bill again! HAHAHA!" Funny.... It was only the once! Ahhh... I think I'll stop my ranting... So yeh... can anyone help? :) But again... it's great to be back and thank you ALL for your emails :) Love ya!!! Jesh xXxXx

My love of Don Knotts Updated
Tuesday, 28 February 2006 02:29:12

I'm so sorry I didn't mean to offend anyone. I accidentaly pressed the update button when I was dragged away from my computer to go buy stuff and spend "quality" time. I loved Don Knotts and thought he was just the funniest and someone said isn't he dead in a thread today and I was going to say actually he died two days ago and such. I really didn't mean to offend anyone. I love you guys and don't want anyone to hate me.

Girly's log: Firefly week 3
Tuesday, 28 February 2006 02:45:02

Couple things about me you should know, I'm "Girly" in name only, and it's such a funny name. Also I'm from Detroit, not to be confused with "Girlyhell", that is a special place for my online opponents. I tend to speak my mind, and rarely in my 42 years have I ever bit my tongue. I like to talk smack, 98% of the time i'm just trying to be funny, or push your buttons. The other 2%, well you need to leave this room, if you catch my drift. For two weeks I was a leaf on the wind, watching the Movie over and over, 6 viewings of the Firefly series, which have become painful to watch. Now all I am is a rock forever tumbling down an endless pit of emotion. If anybody tells me "It's better to have loved, and lost...", well all i can say it won't be pretty. I haven't lost my inspiration though, i'm 40+ pages into my Serenity II screenplay, ideas are flowing, only things slowing me down is that in all reality I am caveman, point of fact, and that this is my first screenplay, that I will actually "Finish". Getting a C- in typing can't be helping me too much either. Only things i have to offer, that you can count on from me, are humor, and honesty. Oh yeah, and "Insanity". I just have only one hope. Hey all, finally gotten around to writing something. Today seemed a good a day as any, had a crippling hangover for most of the day, I find I just don't bounce back like I used to, kinda sucks. Try to watch other things non Firefly/Serenity, trying to remember life BF, ya know? As it turns out, most everything else is bloody awful, so I watch Out of Gas for the 50th time. Never disappointing, NEVER. Feelin sleepy and hangovery still. I really need to end my abusive relationship with my boyfriend, Jagermeister,he is truly evil....signing off

FanFic Puzzle Pieces

Don't you just love it when you're working on the plot of a story, and you're having trouble solving a couple plot holes or getting your favorite "visualized" moments in the story, but then... You have an epiphany. A simple solution that solves not one, but TWO plot problems you were having, AND adds more interest to the story. I love it when that happens. Now I just have to write the stupid thing. For those who don't know I'm still in the beginning portion of my "Antebellum" series I've been working on since December. I've got (more or less) the whole thing worked out in my head, which is tough, 'cause I hardly have any time to write any of it. At this rate, it'll probably take me 15 million years (

Are You Gonna Take This Lyin' Down?

On the Drift: Music Inspired by Firefly and Serenity by the Bedlam Bards is currently at # 3 on the CDBaby charts, behind some soul singers and an album of "heavy-edge dark guitar pop," whatever that means. Sure, a lot of people would say, "Be happy with number 3. It's not like you're playing music that appeals to the mainstream. It's not like anybody cared about that Fireflux show when it was on, and nobody cares about it now." But I say the Browncoats can do better. I say we can show the world that it ain't over. I say we can hold this valley no matter what—'cause some things really do stay with you 'til the day you die. So, please, tell your friends. Tell your family. Tell the world. We're goin' for #1. And if you still ain't convinced by fiery rhetoric, listen to the samples. They're all there at

More?

All right. So I kinda finished my little baby fic with Simon and Kaylee but I do want to write more. I don't mind going back and writing in the past or going forward much later but I thought it would be fun to have any one who wanted to leave some plot bunnies or requests or any little ideas here for what you would like to see. It's like choose your own adventure books ( those were so awesome in elemantary school-except I hated it when I died! ). If anyone is interested, leave them here or you could message me or whatever. It's nice to see ideas at a glance that could inspire you to write, why not from the people that read your stuff . Thanks again to everyone who reads and comments on my fics. You guys are awesome!

realization of my maturity...it's a kicker
Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:48:24

I realized when I started my new job at a daycare that I have really matured and becoming a usefull young adult with a mind that thinks before it acts. It scared me at first how all the children were looking up to me but I soon realized as many young adults do is that they look up to me because I have finally matured and given up on being a child. I'm still most like Kaylee...you can't take that away, I think that's why they enjoy me so much. I'm laid back and cheery, and love everything shiny. See ya around! ~Beth Daleen

So ya, here I am...

Now I just want to start off, more for myself than for anyone reading this that I've never really been head o'er heels for something. People yes, certain foods (Banana shakes pop into mind), but never a movie or TV show. A friend of mine a month or so ago handed me this DVD set and said something along the lines of here go watch this. I did.. though in all honesty it took me about a week to even take the first disc out. After all it was a Tv show. Something about futuristic cowboys and stuff. So after I put the first disc in I watched serenity unfold, then the train job, and then bushwacked. I was hooked. Over the course of the next couple of days I devoured it. There was something about it that just grabbed me. The characters, the writing, and even the setting all just yanked at something. I don't know. I don't think I ever will. Between the BDM, and BDS, I have tons of questions. I want more. More stories, more moments... just more. Granted there are the therories, and speculations. I just want more. So...ya, here I am. I found a plce in the verse where I can mingle with others of a similar sort. Will I ever get more? It really dosn't matter I think. I'll gladly take it don't get me wrong. But I think in the end all that does matter is that I wanted more. Radar out
