A Scary Feeling

Sunday, February 19, 2006 7:04 AM

Earlier today, sometime around noon, an odd feeling started creeping its way into my gut. I‘d been cleaning my bedroom, at the time, and was able to make use of my amygdala (mine happens to be intact) and get back to work.

A few hours later the feeling resurfaced, stronger this time. Again I was able to push it away, but not as easily (I had to get out an old mirror—previously obtained from the alley by my house—break it and arrange the pieces into an artistic design). It worked. At least, for a while. I couldn’t arrange pieces of a broken mirror all day; I have a life, don’t I? Then the feeling came back and made me wonder. It kept growing, and growing, distracting me from whatever I did, gnawing at my insides. Sometimes I get feelings like this that are due to a lack of activity (if I sit around all day watching meaningless TV, or I do something else that deactivates brain activity for to long). Usually I just get my lazy self up and do something more... more meaningful. This wasn’t the case. Different feeling.

Around 8:00, in the evening, the feeling was getting out of hand. I decided to just plop down and watch a Firefly episode. Funny thing is, as I got the DVD, set everything up, and decided on which episode (OMR), the feeling began to recede. At the end of the episode (just after Mal finds out that Inara kissed his wife) I was sitting on the couch laughing up puke when I realized the feeling was gone. It had retreated unnoticed during the ecstasy of the ‘vers.

I came here, wrote this, and now I’m wondering if I should watch Objects in Space .

Is this scientifically considered an addiction?
