Rest in Peace
Sunday, 01 October 2006 00:07:53

When i came home today, my sister grabbed me and told me she thought one our cats, Luke, was dead. I went into her room, into her closet where he had fallen asleep last night, and when i looked at him and incepted him, it was confermed... Hes had passed away in his sleep. So... its being a bit hard on me... so im kind of... out of it...

Better, better..

Got the companion(s) and space hooker book. Read 'em. Not actually that much new or (to my mind) insightful therein. Most of it's been discussed on the boards. Shiny pictures and funny asides though! I should be able to use it for sentence structure and language usage if nothing else. Hmm. Just got all my little discs back home safe and sound. I need to get up early and go walk 3 miles for the ACS breast cancer thingy. Work got a team up last year, so now it's a tradition. Don't know if I'm gonna make it 3 miles in the rain this close to just getting better. Then there's a birthday party for munchkin's classmate that afternoon. Still haven't gotten a prezzie. Good thing it's at a mall.

Objects in Space...
Sunday, 01 October 2006 05:54:52

now that i've spend a good ten hours sifting through ones and zeros... hyperlinks and images, i think i've finally updated most (but not all) of my forums, blogs, and groups... i'm just glad to know that even though i'm a 'late bloomer' as far as becoming a Firefly fan (saw the series for the first time two weeks ago... thanks to a friend) i think i'm still a fanatic, and am glad to find that i'm not the only one. furthermore, i'm proud to see that we (browncoats, the WORLD over) aren't giving up... theres updates and contest and get-togethers galore... all these people spending countless hours in an attempt to bring Firefly to the masses, and share our addiction with the world ...as true fans should!! At any rate, i think its about time to grab some wine & chocolate and sit down for another episode of Firefly... catch ya'll in the verse!

Is it a blog, or is it a handy bookmark storage unit?
Sunday, 01 October 2006 17:17:34

I think I'm gonna go with handy bookmark storage unit. I've been through four traumatic computer deaths since my online fandom began, and another one looks imminent. So, assuming I get around to it, I'm going to post my handy ff/s related reference links as blogs (I can edit old blogs, right?) where others can use 'em too. (And add in their own handy links.) So the question now is, do blogs use the same formatting for links that posts do? (test:)

BDHs online
Sunday, 01 October 2006 17:59:27

For anyone interested in tracking down some BDH postings... Most of Joss and Nathan's posts (including the edited version of Nathan's infamous comic book store post) to the official movie site have been archived (out of context) at Relight's site:

I swallowed a couple of bugs. Pt. 1
Monday, 02 October 2006 18:00:11

Now the first thing to know about swallowing a bug is that your mouth has to be open in order to do it. I am well-aware of the old saw, “When your mouth is open, your ears [and/or mind] are closed.” I hope that anyone needing to get my attention will be able to do so. :bash: Okay, so the EID stamp email is an OLD bit of snooze, but it achieved new relevance—for me anyway—because someone sent it to me the same day I ran across the Letter to the Editor below in a local paper. If you are unfamiliar with the EID stamp controversy, the details are made clear along the way. While the author of this letter has chosen a public forum to voice his opinions, to which he is most certainly entitled, I am withholding his identity here because it is not the forum he chose and I do not wish to foment any ill will toward him regardless of his views by exposing him to a much larger and potentially hostile (as distinct from violent) audience since he may well have been preaching to the choir, not expecting any dissent. I know full well that I myself may become the target of some flame-throwers who find his position more like their own. So I need to express from the outset that whether or not I agree with his conclusions, my interest here is about the way he comes about them. I am hard-pressed to find another example of so much wrong-thinking in such a short space. He sounds like he’s achieved some level of education, but that hasn’t made him smart. What it has made him, and people like him, is dangerous (as distinct from violent). I haven’t decided about responding with my own letter, because, unlike you, he is a part of my community and I’m not sure about the wisdom of giving up my anonymity, not out of any rational fear for my safety but because I am a coward. (I should, however, mention the “sportsmen” in the area have turkey-shoot right down the road from me.) :blast: "Shameless pandering to illegal immigrants? "To the Editor: "Is it simply a matter of corporate good intentions, or rather shameless commercial pandering to a growing hoard of illegal immigrants? That is a question we are now forced to address when a growing number of large American retailers elect to promote their goods and services to American consumers through bi-lingual marketing programs. "It is generally conceded by both our elitists as well as our vast American unwashed masses, that our English language is the glue that binds our unique American culture together. Our nation and our culture have never been based on the collectivization of hundreds of separate but equal cultures. Rather it has been based on the Americanization of those separate cultures creating new Americans and enriching the broad base of our knowledge and experience. How then, is it possible that Lowe’s, Home Depot, and others have managed to conclude that the addition of Hispanic in-store signs might further the interests of our nation? "Guy #1 at Hardware Store A, Guy #2 at Hardware Store B, Guy #3 at the Lumber Yard, Guy #4 at the Muffler Shop, Doc Guy #5, and thousands of other small business people have, and will continue, to serve a broad spectrum of new and old Americans without weakening that glue. But pandering to those who might resist assimilation into our unique American culture will only encourage greater division and turmoil in the future. "My vote is for a United America bound together by a unique culture based upon a common bond of language. My vote is against Lowe’s, Home Depot, or any other enterprise that would allow economic expediency to weaken such a bond." My humble critique follows in the subsequent blog:

Story Updates
Monday, 02 October 2006 18:36:43

Just wanted to let anyone know who was interested I updated my Livejournal with Chapter 4 of Stand Up and Chapter 2 of a story previously only available on my Livejournal called Barter System. They will be added to my fanfiction.net profile as soon as I get a chance. Since there was a request to drop a line if I updated just thought I would. Take care all! Dani

Testing... Testing... Is this thing on?
Monday, 02 October 2006 19:56:01

Well, I've been meaning to fill this blank space for *ages* and now I have an excuse! *fanfare* I have a new website. Yup, a brand new website created by little me. There's not a whole pile on there. Just my Firefly/Serenity animations which, okay, is actually a lot when I think about it. It's mostly the smaller stuff as google has a habit of saving my larger stuff as still images instead of animations - I'm still trying to fix that! The site address is www.desktophippie.com Can you believe nobody else out there wanted desktophippie.com? How crazy are they! The site is hosted by Yahoo!Geocities, so it may be a little clunky. I've had to host my images seperately on GooglePages, which doesn't help! Anyway, enjoy the site and send me a message if it crashes while you're looking at it! Cheers, Linda - The Desktop Hippie :)

Job Happiness
Tuesday, 03 October 2006 00:04:46

Well, guys, I got a raise for my job today. It was a nice chunk too, so hopefully I'll be able to pay off some bills. Living on your own sure does take some coin. I work with computers, and was actually moved up today. Happiness abounds!

Cant sleep
Tuesday, 03 October 2006 01:01:36

I cant sleep, I fall asleep eventually but I just dont get tired the same way. I feel hollow inside, like something just is missing. I know what it is, its hope. The hope of one getting together with her. Now that that hope is gone, it left a gaping hole in my soul. Cant really say im depressed, and I dont have any problems hanging out with her, im not even in pain at the moment. Im just... empty... Cant fill the hole either, ive tried with food, smoking, sleep, TV, meeting people, nothing really works. I just cant make myself feel again. And its hurting my studies, didnt go to school today cause I didnt go to sleep untill 10.30 in the morning.

Big Damn Hugs
Tuesday, 03 October 2006 16:03:50

Well, the move is over, the house is empty...well, it's still full of all my stuff, but I think you know what I mean. I have a lot of cleaning and rearranging to do before the house is really "mine", but I am looking forward to that; especially turning the basement into a cross between the Maidenhead and Inara's shuttle! I want to thank each and every one of you for being family. I never in a million years expected the kind of support offered by the Browncoats. You truly are a family to me, and I really think it would have been almost impossible to get through the past month without knowing you were here with support, Mudder's Milk and strawberries, and most of all, a shoulder and an ear for me. Browncoats truly are the shiniest people in the 'Verse. Thank you all!

Woo (ruttin') Hoo!

As of yesterday morning, Blue Moon Episode 101 is now roamin' the airwaves as Tales From the 'Verse Episode #2. Everyone go have a listen—"The Beast" did a great job reading, especially Daphne and Sir Anderson's lines. Go! You go now!

baby update
Tuesday, 03 October 2006 17:25:18

Ok I figured this was better than posting on all the different areas. So I am not pregnant. However, though I am a bit sorry, it's not without it's good points:) 1- I can have a martini this weekend:) 2-I get to have lots and lots more sex!!!! 3- I have a few more weeks to do situps and tighten my abs before they get ( look away now if you do not want to know this icky pregnancy fact) literally ripped apart.

We are on our way!
Tuesday, 03 October 2006 22:01:55

Well pretty much everything is taken care of. The whole house thing turned out pretty well and now we are going to leave this great state in two days. The car is packed and we're ready to go! Maybe while I'm driving through the Yukon territory I'll put my Serenity music on and pretend I'm cruising in the black. I knew I should've gotten my "Wash is my co-pilot" License Plate Holder. hehe.. be back soon.

Flanvention II
Wednesday, 04 October 2006 04:55:49

So I'm going now. Yay! My badge number is going to be craptacular, but that's alright. I just need to figure out my flight drama. Part of the problem is that LAX isn't really a Delta hub and so all the flights are taking me all over the U.S. and getting me in late-ish Thursday night and I have to either a)leave ridiculously early on Sunday if I fly out of Burbank or b)miss Vietnamese on Monday if I fly out of LAX on the late flights. Curse wanting to save my free United flight for another trip to Hawaii and curse Delta for not having a direct red eye connection between LAX and Chicago . . . then I'd be back in Madison at 9:30 am with the help of the bus. BUT I'M GOING TO FLAN II!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Writing Sucks!
Wednesday, 04 October 2006 14:22:14

You know... if it's not Word ignoring my ignore commands regarding Firefly speech, or writer's block, or my muse disappearing for parts unknown.... I have so many pieces of fanfics, and not a single one with a proper ending. It's all so very frustrating! Anyway... rant over. Just had to get that off my chest.

Entry on September 16, 2006
Thursday, 05 October 2006 01:34:09

Welcome to my first blog entry dedicated to the TV Show Firefly and the Movie Serenity. I am a relatively new fan to the series and movie. A couple months ago a friend recommended I rent the movie Serenity. After seeing it I was hooked. I went out and purchased the DVD, and then I found out that the movie was in fact based on a short lived TV Series called Firefly. Well I went right out to Amazon and ordered that as well. It has quickly become one of my favorite TV shows. I will use this Blog to say thanks to the crew involved in the creation of Firefly and any news I find out regarding the show.

Bought the Firefly DVD yesterday
Thursday, 05 October 2006 06:40:13

Bought the DVD so now I don't need the downloaded stuff anymore - just wanted to calm ecgordon and other Browncoats a little. The DVD was easier to find than I thought it would be. I intend to buy the Serenity DVD too :)

Game
Thursday, 05 October 2006 18:10:47

Started running my Serenity game. I ran "Dead or Alive," the unaired script...folks seemed to like it, though my player who ran the doctor never left the damn boat, so he missed out on most of the adventure. I ran my story "Honor" next, and people seemed to like it. It's always interesting to see where my players diverge from the actual written text. Funniest line: The crew returned from the party in "Honor" sans Simon, and River (who wasn't at the party) looks at Kaylee and goes, "Kaylee, did your dress kill Simon?"

What's this?
Thursday, 05 October 2006 18:15:47

Can someone tell me what a "beta reader" is? I'm thinking that it's like a proof reader or something, but I'm not overly sure. If it is, then does anyone want to do it for me? I have a few fics I want to get posted and someone suggested that I need a "beta reader". And if a Beta is a proof reader then why do you call it that? I'm confused and not at all very smart when it comes to things like this. Someone help me please. (pout)

My Firefly Blog
Thursday, 05 October 2006 21:12:07

I started it last September when I really got interested in the show. I created a number of cast member backgrounds in celebration of the 1 year anniversary of Serenity.

the 'verse as I see it
Thursday, 05 October 2006 23:52:16

It's been one of those days. Where you wish that you could just disappear from the troubles of one life and enter in to the troubles of another. Maybe pop into the 'verse and see what enemies you can make. Escapism...yes, most likely. But, it's a nice thought, Isn't it? If I were to transpose my self into the 'verse where would I be or, who would I be? There's a thought. Maybe, I'll think on that and write into a fanfic or, I'll leave it where it is.

The Pain...
Friday, 06 October 2006 00:05:12

The shock of being rejected has subsided and the pain has swept in. And such horrible agoinising pain it is. I just want to rip out my heart to stop it from aching. It feels like a thousand knives have been stabbed through my heart. I just want the pain to go away, to feel better and to once more feel loved.. Why dont I deserve to be happy? This sucks...

Simon being J.Lennon
Friday, 06 October 2006 00:52:18

Alright, random thoughts as I saw a picture of Simon with his rose-colored glasses. A)that's ironic....rose colored glasses B)that's sexy in a futuristic John Lennon sorta way I think I need a nap...or a Guiness. hee hee

Blargh
Friday, 06 October 2006 04:29:41

I solved my flight drama!!! Woohoo!!!! Madison-LAX on Thursday, then returning Burbank-Madison monday morning. Of course the flights aren't that easy: one layover in Atlanta going to Cali and 2 layovers on the way back! Frequent flier miles are nice, but they can be a real bitch. And I would say "boo to homework", but my history reading is super interesting right now.

I Don´t Wanna Be Me.
Friday, 06 October 2006 09:39:44

Just paid the bills with the last money I had. Dont have any money to pay the bills next month, and I cannot any longer afford food. Everything is totally fucked. I dont have anywhere I can turn to fix the problem either. Aint got nowhere to stay if im evicted (more then perhaps a couple of weeks atleast), cant ask my parents for money since then the would find out my brother is broke and I have been supporting him, aint got no girl to cry to and I aint got anyone I can borrow money to live on for six months. I just dont know what to do anymore

yes... well... and so on..
Friday, 06 October 2006 13:51:44

Haven't been here for a while, since someone who will remain anonymous and also not me, hasn't payed their internet bill. Life without internet is hard. I didn't think it would be, but life surprises you everyday. This not having internet access should be a good thing, its not like I don't have a huge paper to write and studies to do, but no... I'm as lazy and unstructured as ever, maybe even more so. Anyway, its fun to be here when I get the chance(when I'm at school and should do semi important stuff). Stay shiny and keep flyin'.

Dangerous Territory
Friday, 06 October 2006 14:40:08

Ok, so I posted my latest chapter yesterday, and I'm very anxious to see what people think. This is the chapter I've been gearing towards, and to finally see it posted is both fantastically marvelous and wonderfully scary. But next chapters in the works, and hopefully I'll answer a few questions that everyone has. (Not all of them though. I have to have something fo future chapters) Hate me if you want, but know that this is how I am.

Friday, 06 October 2006 22:36:38

So there is this hole in my front yard. Right about where one walks from ones car. It is not a new hole. It has been there since before me. My mom has been telling me for 2 years to fill the damn thing before she breaks something tripping in it. Yeah. So today, I leave work exhausted from 4 12+ hour days and not watching my step walk into the FARGING hole. I have twisted my left ankle and my right wrist. Fairly typical day for me really! Its too funny! Love and kisses to all!

Guiness in the 'verse?
Saturday, 07 October 2006 14:12:30

So, I made a random comment about wanting a nap or Guiness in one of my blogs and it got me thinking. What kind of alcohol would they have in the 'verse. Would it be like moonshine from the ole days? I suppose it would be based on what kind of plants they had access to. Okay, I know you may be thinking "What kind of alcoholic is this chic?" But, really it's not about the alcohol but, the plants. Yes, I'm a nerd and have an affection for Biology. It comes down to it that the majority of the outer planets were not quite plant friendly. What do you think? :stupid:

Ok so my day has just started out great. After coming home from droping off my cousins at the airport, I look in my budgies nest box to find one beautiful little newly hatched baby bird. It's eyes are closed and has no feathers or down, just pink and little. AND SO VERY DAMN ADORABLE

"Existentialism on Prom Night" When the sun came up, We we're sleeping in, Sunk inside our blankets, Sprawled across the bed, And we we're dreaming, There are moments when, When I know it and The world revolves around us, And we're keeping it, Keeping it all going, This delicate balance, Vulnerable all knowing, Sing like you think no one's listening, You would kill for this, Just a little bit, Just a little bit, You would, kill for this Sing like you think no one's listening, You would kill for this, Just a little bit, Just a little bit, You would, you would... Sing me something soft, Sad and delicate, Or loud and out of key, Sing me anything, we're glad for what we've got, Done with what we've lost Our whole lives laid out right in front of us, Sing like you think no one's listening, You would kill for this, Just a little bit, Just a little bit, You would, Sing like you think no one's listening, You would kill for this, Just a little bit, Just a little bit, You would, you would.... I am mightily hacked off
Sunday, 08 October 2006 08:42:33

:pissed: Guess what time my moronic chavvy next door neighbour was playing his moronic chavvy dance music at. Half past bloody two in the morning!!!!!!! Now normally I can live with this music I just turn the telly up and ignore it but at 2:30 I would much rather be sleeping. Anyway the rest of yesterday wasn't that bad. My brother and I went shopping with our friend Bobby to Durham; which is always fun. Our conversation turned very surreal. I won't go into any detail but it involved cross-dressing, Tom Jones and leeks amongst other stuff. Anyway, I am off now TTFN Jennifer -x-

for Zoë
Sunday, 08 October 2006 11:31:12

with slight editing, i just think the lyrics for 'goodbye my lover' by james blunt are perfect for wash's feelings for zoë post-bdm: 'Did I disappoint you or let you down? Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown? I took what's mine by eternal right. Took your soul out into the night. You touched my heart you touched my soul. You changed my life and all my goals. And love is blind and that I knew when, My heart was blinded by you. I've kissed your lips and held your head. Shared your dreams and shared your bed. I know you well, I know your smell. I've been addicted to you. 'Goodbye my lover. Goodbye my friend. You have been the one. You have been the one for me. 'And as you move on, remember me, Remember us and all we used to be I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile. I've watched you sleeping for a while. I'd be the father of your child. I'd spend a lifetime with you. 'Goodbye my lover. Goodbye my friend. You have been the one. You have been the one for me.' i plan to incorporate this maybe into a fanfiction in the future hense why i didn't post this as filk or something... but don't you think this is great?! i never noticed it before, but it's so cute... anyhow, [sofi over and out]

Back in the Black
Sunday, 08 October 2006 19:16:01

Well, that was quite a delay. Mind you, this latest chapter is about twice the length of the others. Once it actually started rolling, it went quite well. Comedy is much harder to write than tragedy. Or even straight action. Anyone can blow things up. Or kill folks. Hell, even scribble smut. But keeping tone and pace, creating an arc, building expectation and then attempting to yank things into another direction? You gotta be crazy (or a disciple of the BDJoss Himself) to attempt it. Now I just have to find out if anyone else likes it. In the Real World, I'm trying to sell my house (cue extensive redecorating, packing away of books, fierce fights not to pack away anything that may be useful 'Verse-wise...) and I just discovered that it's worth about half as much again as what I paid for it four years ago. So, my first thought was - when I have a bigger house and more money, I can buy a really good big flat screen so I can watch the BDH on it. (Insert disgusting joke about Jayne and inches here... ) There is also a plan to have a proper study with a permanent broadband connection and an entire bookwall (or two) My books are beginning to warp time and space around themselves - they have already caused structural damage. And then I will have a comfy office chair and a decent desk. And then I can really devote some time and effort to this.

Hub Convention Melbourne

Just wondering if anyone can tell me the venue for the Buffy convention this Sunday (15th)? Hub Productions is renovating their website so I can't get any details off them.

Untitled... (ironic isnt it?)

new fanfic ideas and the blather in my poor skull
Monday, 09 October 2006 04:03:13

so. I've been trying to write some of Tracey's past. I figured it could be an interesting thing. I'm trying to do it in dream format, as he mentions that while he was under, he dreamed of his family. However, my writing muse has alltogether left me. It's been gone for a couple of months now, and I hate it. I tried to write some in class awhile back, but it turned out shite. There was nothing worth keeping. I guess all my writing energies are being directed toward half-assed school assignments. I cannot even put all my effort into those. I have, however mastered the art of bullshitting. I only hope I have lost my fiction writing abilities for good. I also seem to have lost my wallpaper image muse. I haven't made a lyric wallpaper of the Firefly variety for some time. In fact, I haven't even watched an episode in some time. I've simply been so busy. (Don't tell Joss I've been watching season 5 of Smallville. I feel like a traitor.) So that's it for now. I wanna write, but I cannot. I have ideas, but they don't transfer to written word. It's frustrating.

FEI
Exhausted...
Monday, 09 October 2006 14:08:50

I feel super tired, maybe 'cause I slept so late for some project about the 1920's where my partner didn't work a tiny bit. I was very annoyed, but when I finished I felt really good (independance!). Worked on iZoe thing, which i did in an hour (while doing homework), I must be getting lazy... My xanga layouts have been stopped, no time, I also have soccer training (3 times a week for 2 hours each session, SEASAC going to JAKARTA, indonesia! WOOHOO!) the start of November. I also feel like startin' a fanfiction for Firefly, but have a bad case of writer's block, as i never finished my fanfics before, and have been reading a firefly X harry potter fanfic... interesting. been reading it on fanfiction.net. But even with my busyness I still love to spend time with my fellow browncoats. hehe.

the 'verse without Wash
Monday, 09 October 2006 16:21:26

I was thinking what the 'verse would be like without Wash. Meaning, if they were to be able to continue with with the tele bit (from my mouth to the gods ears) what would it be like without Wash? Now, I was extremely sad when he died but that was movie land. Would there be any way to bring his character back? I suppose that he could come back in flashback form which would be neat especially since I would love to see how his and Zoe's relationship formed. But, as with (most) everything, life must move forward. So, where would it move too? :banghead:

I have friends!
Monday, 09 October 2006 16:48:02

Nine of them, to be exact. At least that's how many people have signed my guestbook in the six days www.desktophippie.com has been up and running. Nine whole friends! And only one of them is related to me! *is happy* I've been fine tuning the website since it started up and I'm pretty happy with how it's turned out. Trying to remember my HTML has been an education, and if a web designer saw my code he'd probably fall off his chair laughing. As well as this and my full time job, I've been asked to write an article for www.courses.ie about TEFL courses. I'll be sure to post the link here when I'm done. And on top of THAT I'm replying to all the letters and postcards I received through the browncoat post! Hopefully they should be on the way soon. Hopefully!

Alternate Universe
Monday, 09 October 2006 18:32:51

I'm hopin that all of you Browncoats are taking a peek at my fanfic, Firefly: Alternate Universe. Yeah, I know it doesn't have the original crew, but it's got Jayne and Wash in it, and eventually they're gonna cross paths with Mal and Serenity. Make sure you check out all my Blue Sun stuff. Thanks.

"Smith" Cancelled After 3 Episodes
Monday, 09 October 2006 19:38:55

Zap2it.com ( a terrific, nearly always correct tv website ) is reporting that "Smith" with Ray Liotta has been yanked after 3 episodes. I think we were discussing "Smith" on the Jericho thread. Can't say I'm too surprised. When I'm hooked on a show, I can't wait to see the next one. I tivoed the last episode and its still in the tivo queue list, waiting to be watched. They also said "Jericho" is holding its own, and "Heroes" is doing very well.

Monday, 09 October 2006 20:34:09

I took the "which firefly character are you?" quiz and it said that I was Kaylee...not so sure about that...hmmmm....I do like a nice pair of coveralls though.

Good Day.

Firefly Rises to Number 7
Tuesday, 10 October 2006 19:03:09

Yeah - Firefly rises to the number seven spot on the best ever TV Show fan voting polls. Still a ways to go, but only one hundred or so votes behind Gunsmoke now - we can smoke em for sure. Come out and vote at

Good evening, Firefly Fans...
Wednesday, 11 October 2006 02:28:15

I thought it would be nice to sit down and have a little chat... About the upcoming Halloween. I have to say that I have never really been this excited for Halloween. I'll be dressing up (One is never too old), and what about everyone else? Will you be going? What as? Thought it would be nice to have a Halloween costume thread. :-) P.S. If you can guess my costume correctly, kudos for you. ^.^ P.P.S. I went to cosplay.com and WOW! AMAZING work! Check it out if you get the chance. :-)

How do you cope?
Wednesday, 11 October 2006 11:22:41

This is my first blog, so bear with me browncoats. I have never really thought much about writing a blog, but recent events have moved me to do so. My father passed away last week after a six month battle with cancer. He passed away before I could get there, but at least my sister was with him at the end. Not being able to say goodbye has left me feeling the loss all the more. My father and I were never very close you see. He was always one to follow his own way and was never much for family. I tried, I really did, to be close to him, to have that father/son bond that you hear about so much, but somehow it always alluded me. I guess it simply was not meant to be. I reached out, I called, I wrote, but my father never seemed all that interested in keeping the lines of communication open. Years went by, we grew apart, and I guess a rift of sorts sprung up between us. When he got sick, he pushed everyone away. He wanted to go it alone, as he has always done, so family was told to let him be. My sister, being as stubborn as he is, stayed near my dad (he lives in another state) and did what she could to take care of him. I envy her that in some ways, but it is a comfort to me to know that at least she was there to take care of him and make his last days as comfortable as she could. I am not posting this to seek sympathy, though any words of condolence are greatly appreciated, but rather to air my thoughts. The browncoats are like my family and if you can't talk to family who do you talk to? I guess the morale here is to stay in touch. Keep working at those relationships with family and friends, no matter how hard it might be at times. Time is the one thing that gets away from us, and before you know it that time is gone. No matter how much we might wish it otherwise, we can't get it back once it is past. Thanks for listening (or reading in this case). Take care browncoats. Keep flyin'!

Why No Sequel?
Wednesday, 11 October 2006 15:00:01

This rant just plays to the fact that while Hollywood is busy churning out sequels like Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, and (not to say anything of our fair captain) White Noise 2, Serenity still sits in Joss's mind, unknowable to the masses. I mean, any normal person looking at this entire situation would come to the natural conclusion that making a sequel, or another season would make money. I feel like someone is just being unreasonably stubborn, just so they can show who wears the pants in this relationship. There are 20 movies I can name off the top of my head that didn't deserve sequels, but got them. And Serenity deserves a sequel. It performed decently at the box office, and DVD sales have been good (thanks to all the Browncoat multiple buys, steady). Not even talking about tv here. I understand tv is a different animal. Especially nowadays when a show will barely last three episodes, much less three seasons (like another genre bending scifi show I could name), so, I wouldn't even dream of that possiblity. But this movie is sitting there, like that carrot that people tie to the fishing pole, and then hold in front of the donkey, so he'll walk? Okay? You see what I'm saying? We're the donkey, people! And the carrot? That's the movie. And no matter how fast and hard we go, we'll never reach it. Okay, that sounds a bit pessimistic. My point is, that I know, it's down to a board, and osme producers, or somesuch. But I just can't shake the feeling that there's this one person. Sitting in her/his office. Being an ass. And not letting us have our sequel. There is no other logical explanation. We've made them ton's o' money, and we're ready to spend more. If they'll give us the chance. Now, if you'll excuse me I'm off to watch Cube 2: Hypercube.

The browncoats are coming
Wednesday, 11 October 2006 17:54:41

It really is amazing, none of my family, or my friends up to just before Serenity came out, even know about the show. I then got chatting with some random people, in random places (like a library in one case) and I have found that the browncoats are everywhere! They hide their true idenity in case aliance are near I guess. It does make me smile when I find another one, in the most unlikely of places too. Anyhoo, keep smiling, and keep flying. :o)

Halloween Costumes
Thursday, 12 October 2006 03:12:20

So, since the title to my last post was a bit strange, I thought that was why there were no responses. So, here we are, mates. What will you be doing/wearing for Halloween? Don't be shy, heh...

stinkingprose
Thursday, 12 October 2006 03:55:28

Typing typing typing. It's the ever expanding fanfic. Scripts kind of end themselves. Not this work. I've never done straight writing and decided to try spreading my artistic wings. So far it's more like an ostrich trying to get airborne I think. I'd settle for a chicken or domestic duck, they can come in at head level. Does that make any sense outside my head? Probably not. Oh well.

Hey all!
Thursday, 12 October 2006 06:04:59

Hey everyone. I'm new to the Firefly community. I have just recently watched and bought both the BDM, and the series. I've never joined an online community before, either. I watched the BDM and series, and it just moved me...I can't really explain it, there is something about this art that is beyond description. Anyways, now that I have that out of the way, I have to say while I have never joined a commuinty before, I have read MANY MANY forums, and i have NEVER encountered a community that as a whole is so polite, and encouraging. I am reapeatedly shocked and surprised at the quality of your average browncoat as a...blogger? poster? What's the word I should be using. Anyways. I just had to say that. Thanks for having me.

My 1858 Remington is on the way! Wooooo-hoooo!
Thursday, 12 October 2006 06:55:48

Yeah, I know they say Mal's gun is based on a Taurs 86 or somesuch, but I like the look of the Uberti Millenium 1858 Remington Cap & Ball black powder civil-war era revolver. Plus unlike the prop model, this one is a functional working firearm. You can check it out at www.fcsutler.com to see what it looks like. Plus you can buy (from the same site) a conversion cylinder to make it fire Colt .45 long rounds. I'll post some pics when I get it -- due next week. Let Shinyness prevail!

Story Delays
Thursday, 12 October 2006 12:53:07

Sorry everyone! I know you're all chomping at the bit waiting to find out what happens to Brian and the crew, especially given the events of the last chapter. Unfortunately, I haven't had much time to myself these past few weeks, and so I haven't been able to sit down and write like I want to. The next chapter is coming, and I hope to have it done within the next week. Only time will tell, though. But, thank you all for your patience and comments.

I honestly have no clue why I titled my blog this and neither will I really concern myself with trying to figure it out because, honestly, it would take to long and I'm lazy. *Back to the non-topic.* What of our common lives now would be exist in the 'verse? Considering that there are no "aliens" in the 'verse it easier to seem similarities but, think about your day and think would it be comparable or similar to your day if you were in the 'verse. Maybe, perhaps, it would be a bit more similar in the inner planets with Alliance considering the more structured lifestyle so, I guess you could think of it in two separate ways. :censored:

Finishing up episode nine. The Ties That Bond is looking to be quite the grim one, but don't lose faith! I have it all planned out. I also promise to give all you readers a break with the next episode. Things have been rather dark for far too long in our little 'Verse...

Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:47:44

Hi there, I went to a lecture last night at Wheatley House given by my univesity lecturer with my mam and my friend, Andrew. It was very fun even though in absolutely peeing it down with rain. Andrew also accosted the lecturer because he was supposed to be at Sunderland Uni teaching a module Andrew was doing but instead came to Newcastle. Anyway on the way home, the path and the road was absolutely covered ion worms. Seriously it was like an invasion. Today I was at the Heritage Centre trying to get inspiration for my dissertation. I'm sitting at my computer on the 12th of October watching it SNOW outside, and not just a little - like it's the middle of gorramn January or something! The wind is blowing it sideways and I can hardly see the (still green, leafy) trees in my yard. O-o-hh...I'm afraid it's gonna be a long winter! I may move to Burbank when I go there in December for Flan II! Blucka!:vomit:

Friday, 13 October 2006 11:41:17

Posted the epic novella last night. Never did find anyone to give me input, so you're stuck with my output. I could have kept expanding and really gotten into peoples' heads and explored their inner lives and motives... but then I'd have never finished and it was already at 12 pages. I wanted to lay the groundwork for future ideas and complete a story in under 250,000 words. Next up: the tale of an amazing prehistoric womand and the saga of her life as she is lost, adopted, raised among savages, ostracized, finds love among the mammoths, and pluckily traverses a glacier while carrying herbal birth control to prevent unintended Oops, wait. That's been done already.

Friday, 13 October 2006 18:36:27

I've been busy with different jobs lately, but the next chapter is ready to go up, I'm just not at my home computer. It should be ready pretty soon. Also, saw the movie X-Men III and absolutely hated it. There was no plot, and many unecessary deaths. I'll stick to Serenity.

Saturday, 14 October 2006 15:41:24

You are Wash. Not only are you a great pilot, you are also the joker of the group. Your devotion to your wife is admirable, though you sometimes feel insecure. Thank god you shaved off your moustache. I first had to figure out who I am in the Firefly universe. Couldn't be happier about who it came out to be. Wash is my fav character aside from Mal and Kaylee. I love the entire cast, the show wouldn't have worked with any other people or characters. So here's to my first blog entry, and hopefully induction into Browncoathood.

Dragon*Con Blogs Ahoy!
Saturday, 14 October 2006 22:19:47

Ok, so I wrote these a while ago, right after D*C ended, but lo and behold, I forgot to post them here of all places :P lol. So there are 4 parts (one for each day that I'm posting now! enjoy!) Each part can be found below on the blog list thingie.

Dragon*Con Part I: The Peoples Arrive
Saturday, 14 October 2006 22:20:40

Well, today totally sucked (bad headache, feeling bad, pouring rain...soaking me, and then came the hours of trying to get back to the hotel), but the night more than made up for it!! I got to meet my peeps!!! lol. I got to hug my mei mei...:) Ah, let me start from the beginning. The first good thing of the day (night i suppose, nothing good about the day) was we went out to dinner at Hard Rock. While there I ordered a virgin strawberry daquiri. It came with a strawberry on top and I decided I needed to practice my strawberry eating ;) After all, I AM going to be Kaylee on Saturday and eat a strawberry. That's when I noticed some guys across from our table...and one seemed like he was checking me out. Who could blame him? :P I had a strawberry swirling around in my mouth! lol. After dinner, we didn't have much time until the firefly trivia contest so we headed down to the Marriott concourse and actually didn't get lost on our way there. Yahoo!!! lol. My little bro, dad, and I participated in it and it was shiny shiny! So fun to see people and joke around with them, even if I hadn't met them before. After all, we were all browncoats there. I met my friends that I had never met in person before, including Elemdee and Karel and Washie!! I didn't see her until after she came in the room because she came in when I was up for my question. When i went to the back of the line and turned around, there she was!! I squeed so much and we ran up to huggle each other! :) after a few rounds of the trivia I actually won something: two license plate holders that say serenity on them....well now all i have to do is get a car...lol. omg, sooooo shiny to be here!!!! sigh. And now? SLEEP!! (oh hey, bagpipes playing outside!!! PAR-TAE! :P)

Dragon*Con Part II: Browncoats, Browncoats Everywhere!
Saturday, 14 October 2006 22:24:15

On Friday morning Washie, my family, and I went to the aquarium. It was shiny. My two favorite things there were the Beluga whales and the blinking jellyfish that lit up (they looked like little UFO ships with blinking lights). Then, after we saw all the animals, I pet a small shark. It was so cool. He had roughish skin that was still smooth. I had so much fun with my mei mei…After the aquarium, I headed back to my hotel and hung out for a while. Then, it was time for BDH Panel #1!!! Woot!! That was so awesome. I went down and got in line with some friends, and while we waited the Bedlam Bards came out and played us a couple songs!! Waiting in line was actually fun! There were a plethora of Jayne Hats lined up against the building, and the line twisted through pillars and off into the distance. The panel itself was shiny too! (of course) When Alan and Summer came out, there was a HUGE cheer!!! They are both so awesome. Summer seemed super sweet and shy, and Alan was…well, he was Alan! Cracking jokes and making fun. There were plenty of questions asked (all entertaining and informative) and both of our BDHs did their best to answer them. I even asked a question! You see, there were these two dinosaurs on the table next to Alan…so I figured, “Weeeeelllllll, why not ask him to do the dinosaur scene from Serenity: the pilot?” *grins* When I finally got to ask him to do so, he was reluctant. He didn’t know all the words and so forth. Me and the rest of the room convinced him otherwise however and were actually treated to seeing Summer and Alan perform as the stegosaurus and the T-rex. Summer didn’t know ANY of the lines, so Alan fed them to her and she did a cute shy steg impression. It was so sweet to watch and everyone laughed. Alan did the T-rex and remembered most of his lines. He let the crowd fill in some of the specifics from time to time since EVERYBODY in the browncoat community knows that scene from start to finish :P It actually turns out that I got the last question (what a way to end a panel!). (click on this link to watch Alan and Summer do the dinosaur scene from Firefly:

Dragon*Con Part III: Costumes, Shindigs, and Strawberries
Saturday, 14 October 2006 22:28:25

Saturday morning I actually woke up on time *gasp* (not wanting to of course since waking up is a task that I have yet to master but still it was on time). It was at about 7:30 am that I think I woke up, seeing as I had to be downstairs by 8:30 to meet up with other shiny folks for the parade, and I wanted to have time to shower and not rush to get down there (cause I’m ususally I’m late for everything, and I mean everything). Seems like I need not have gotten down early or even on time since we didn’t leave until about 9:30ish. S’ok though, gave me lots of time to take pics and hang with my fellow browncoats. J There was a mal dressed in the dress and floral bonnet from Our Mrs. Reynolds (that was a GREAT costume), a few very nice River costumes, plenty of shiny Kaylees (including myself), Trsitan as Mal (and guys, if you haven’t seen Tristan’s Mal costume…go see it now, cause it rocked! AND he made it all himself! From the coat to the suspenders to the boots! Way shiny), a couple Zoes, some Washes (with my fav as our wonderful pilot with the infamous stake through his chest), and then there was the awesome person dressed up as the “Not Mandatory” woman from the Fruity Oaty Bars commercial, octopus busting out of blouse right then and there. lol. The parade got started late too. After we trekked over to the start of the parade, we waited….and waited…and, uh…waited some more! It was ok though. Again, had some fun hanging with my favorite ‘Coats until it did start. And once it did? I was so psyched! I walked along, my pink parasol twirling in the air, a big Kaylee smile on my face. Oh, and before the parade, someone had handed out some bags of candy to us (also had a little dino in it for wash, ain’t that cute??) so I threw the candy to the little kids or the really enthusiastic fans in the crowd (kept the dino for myself though, cute little dino guy). As we started walking along, Cedric of the Bedlam Bards (nice guy him, met him several times during the con) struck up a tune! During the course of the parade, we sung a couple choruses of “Hero of Canton,” “The Firefly Theme,” “The Ballad of Joss,” and a couple other songs. It rocked, really added to the whole thing. Thanks Cedric!! But alas, the parade ended too soon…really! It was sooo short, but it WAS worth the getting up early and waiting and waiting and waiting and walking and walking some more…lol, no really it was. I had so much fun. Afterwards, everyone who was in the parade got a colorful water bottle if they wanted it, so that was cool. It was as I and my dad were walking back to our hotel after the parade that I saw Nicolas Brendon (Xander from Buffy) but I shrugged it off and said, “nah!” Oh how little I know about conventions…lol. It turns out that it was him, as I found out later. Aw well… So thusly, I headed back to my room in the mighty fortress of Hyatt-tude. I waited for a bit and then headed down to meet Washie and hang. Me and her went and shopped in one of the dealer rooms (where I got a shiny Kaylee badge) and then headed up to Nicolas Brendon panel (yes, and this is how I knew it was him in the hall after the parade). That was really fun to watch. He’s a real sweetie, and at the end of the panel he actually did the “snoopy dance”!!! (click here to see Nick do the snoopy dance:

Dragon*Con Part IV: The End Draws Near; Laughter and Tears
Saturday, 14 October 2006 22:29:50

Because I got in so late (early???) I woke up late, therefore missing a panel I had wanted to attend about how to make fairy photographs. Sigh, aw well. I did get to go to a Buffy panel though. It was ok. There were some funny anecdotes. After that was the third BDH panel. Good panel, yep yep. In it, I think the best thing was that Alan read his Wash Eulogy. Yep, that’s right. You see, he read it at the wake but he ALSO read it at the panel on request of the person who wrote it. She wanted him to write her a “note” you see *giggles* cause she needed to prove to her friends who weren’t there that he actually did read it. He did her two better. He not only signed that he did, but (1) he actually read it to everyone, and (2) he edited it as he went along. Yep, Alan put little things in the margins (all funny of course) and read them out loud. My favorite was when he decided there weren’t enough words emphasizing his unique manliness. He chose to put a few thousand more “sexy” words in there, hehehe. “SEXY SEXY SEXY” yep, you go Alan! You’re totally in the right here. (click here to see Alan read his Wash eulogy:

completely un-Unforgettable
Sunday, 15 October 2006 03:36:11

Thats me it seems. My boy toy is no longer. Guess he got tired of me not being around. It is sad. Work Work Work Work. Thats me these days. Haven't even seen me mum for 3 weeks! Not much news here. It is freaking cold in the evenings and 80 during the day. We will all die of pnuemonia I am sure. #2 is on the honor roll. All B's. Much better than last year, now that the asshole is mostly out of the picture. Speaking of the sphincter, they (he and his skank) are, apparently, moving as the house has a For Sale By Owner. My kids are stealing a info sheet as I type. I will laugh me arse off if they have listed it for the 211,000 he reckons my house is worth. My realtor reckons I could get 160000 on a month ending in q if the Pope is in town, so we will see. The kids are excited he is moving, how sad is that. Someone at works reckons I look like Lynda Carter of Wonder Woman. I think he knows who is going to be making the schedules. Ok enough boring crap from me. Hey to all, sorry I am not around. Any idea when the exhaustion wears off? :)

Browncoats Ball

I have had a couple of people, through the Browncoat Post, ask about the Browncoat Ball... my photos are all here:

Critque The Losing Side for me - please!
Monday, 16 October 2006 10:32:04

Some of you have been following my fanfic The Losing Side. It's been quite a process for me, and I've in many ways been learning to write fiction as I go. The story has gotten a nice handful of positive commments along the way, along with some advice that has been very helpful. Lately, though, I've been getting a little insecure. My writing style has been changing, from more minimal and concise to longer and more detailed. More attention is being paid to smaller moments in the story, and I can't decide if that's a good or a bad thing. I also wonder from time to time if my characterizations are slipping. Now, I cherish those positive comments; they are the fuel that keep me writing this. But I also know folks often won't comment if they don't like something; they'll simply move on, and many of my former regular readers haven't commented for a while. So, what I'm asking for here is that you post any and all suggestions, input, constructive criticisim, etc. that you might have. I'd like to hear the other side - not just what you like about the story, but where you think it could be improved. Please? This whole fiction writing thing is so new to me that I'm really exploring what works and what doesn't, and, well, reading minds is tough!

Family vote is still out on Firefly
Monday, 16 October 2006 12:25:07

Hiya fellow browncoats. The vote is still out but I think that I did pretty good this weekend. Since I've been spouting the SHINYNESS of the Verse for the past several months I really haven't had many takers among family and friends to sit down with me and watch the show. My sons have seen a few eps and they like the show but they are at the partying age and being with friends is always better than being with mom and dad. Now yesterday my sister who live only one mile away called and asked if I still wanted her to watch the show. Well what do you think I said :) ? Anyway I was over there in a flash with FF in hand. She had been watching the original Star Trek series and was looking for something new. I slapped in the dvd and we began watching the pilot eps. Her 16 year old daughter got up about 40 minutes later and began watching the series with us. Then my nieces b/f came over and he watched the eps SAFE all the way through JAYNESTOWN. I went home after that because it was dark but left the dvd set with them. I don't know if I've created any new browncoats but they all liked the show and were saying it was a ruttin shame that it was cancelled. My sis will finish the series this week then she wants to see the BDM. Like I said the vote is still out but I've tossed out some FF seeds. Hope they take root. Z

watching done the impossible
Monday, 16 October 2006 17:51:40

I watched 'done the impossible' the other day, and I was almost in tears for a lot of it. I had no idea how loyal the browncoats are, and how much they had to do with the BDM. And even though I only became a browncoat after I saw Serenity, it still makes me very proud to be part of such an amazing fan base.

Dave Stewart - RIP
Monday, 16 October 2006 18:09:58

The Irish Sci-Fi scene lost one of it's well known members late last week. Dave Stewart, an avid sci-fi fan and member involved with some of Ireland's best known conventions, lost his battle with cancer. Dave's death came just before Octocon, the National Irish Sci-Fi Convention, and cast something of a pall over the event. He will be deeply missed. On a brighter note - People have sent me messages over the last week and I've been terrible and haven't replied! I'm very, very, very, VERY sorry and I'm hoping to reply to all the messages by Wednesday at the very latest. Sorry!

Different character personality test result
Monday, 16 October 2006 19:26:59

I already did one Firefly character personality test, but on a lark I took another two others from two other sites. One of the tests said I was Zoe. Which is kinda weird. My first test came back as my being Wash, which is fine, but interesting one test came back as wash and another as Zoe. Which in of itself is funny, cause the last test I did I came back as Mal. Does anyone have a suggestion as to which test I should listen to. I answered each one honestly, but got different results. Maybe if someone could recommend a site as to the "definitive character personality test" I would be much obliged so I can know who I am. I would be pleased to be which ever of the results I've come up with so far. But a bit more of a definitive answer would be great.

Things They Never Tell You
Monday, 16 October 2006 19:41:24

About having kids - everyone surely has some notion that they tend to destroy things, sometimes out of curiosity and exploration, sometimes out of sheer savagery, like puppies. What I did not consider until it happened is that they go through a phase where stuff just gets put somewhere else, and I mean somewhere no adult would think to put it or even look for it. Very often, this means the trash can, wich is OK once you figure it out, because you know where to look, but it gets messy. Sometimes things will be in pots inside kitchen cabinets, as another example. I have not watched all of Firefly yet. I had gotten through "Our Ms. Reynolds" when Disc Two disappeared off the face of the Earth. Being somewhat obsessed with FF currently, and working hard at converting my wife, I found this distressing to say the least. My youngest is in the random movement of items stage. My oldest is not, but she is in the playing with the DVD player and putting her favorite movies in all the time and opening and closing the door stage. But she does put them in the boxes. So, my disc having disappeared from the player but not into any DVD box (checked them all), I figured the one must have taken it out and the other must have grabbed it and run to some exotic location. I ransacked the house for hours. Luckily my stubborn/desperate ability to look in the same place over and over again saved me. The disc was in the DVD player. Not in the tray or anything so quaint, but in the guts. It's a DVD/VCR combo, so there's a fair amount of interior space. I thought of that early on, but it could not easily be seen. It was only when I looked underneath the player for the third time, that I lifted it to a sufficient angle to hear the disc slide around inside, and after some manipulation was able to retrieve it. Day saved. I am thankful because I would not have checked that space again and the player would probably have ended up in the landfill with my oh-so-precious FF #2 still inside.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld
Monday, 16 October 2006 20:36:06

I got to meet Terry Pratchett yesterday at a book signing:

Tonight I am:
Tuesday, 17 October 2006 01:16:39

YOUR CALL Secondhand Serenade Waiting for your call, I'm sick, call I'm angry call I'm desperate for your voice I'm listening to the song we used to sing In the car, do you remember Butterfly, Early Summer It's playing on repeat, Just like when we would meet I was born to tell you I love you and I am torn to do what I have to, to make you mine Stay with me tonight Stripped and pollished, I am new, I am fresh I am feeling so ambitious, you and me, flesh to flesh Because every breath that you will take while you are sitting next to me will bring life into my deepest hopes, What's your fantasy? I was born to tell you I love you and I am torn to do what I have to, to make you mine Stay with me tonight And I'm tired of being all alone, and this solitary moment makes me want to come back home ( I know everything you wanted isn't anything you have) I was born to tell you I love you and I am torn to do what I have to, to make you mine Stay with me tonight I was born to tell you I love you and I am torn to do what I have to, to make you mine Stay with me tonight (I know everything you wanted isn't anything you have)

Supernova
Tuesday, 17 October 2006 01:43:47

This weekend I saw the movie Supernova. From the back, it sounded a lot like Serenifly. It said it was about a med ship that tried a dimensional jump to rescue some people from an abandoned mining station. The crew almost died in the process, but they found this one guy and an alien artifact. So, I think, "OK, this sounds like a pretty good movie." I watched it, and there were some similarities to Serenifly but not as many as I hoped. The best parts were when I was able to just see the ship. All in all, though, the movie wasn't incredibly bad. I'm just disappointed, that's all. :disappointed:

Arms are empty but heart is full
Tuesday, 17 October 2006 04:50:00

It's October in Washington State. The bright Autumn leaves are falling a little further from the trees every day, there's a chill in the air and rain's coming down. Never warm rolling thunder, but always cold rain. The guy I love is on the other side of the continent, which explains the heart full/arms empty line. Long distance relationships are the devil. And heavenly at the same time. Who knew it would be like this? Weeks that turn into months of wonderfully constant dedicated chat time, voice and cam punctuated by gaping voids of no-talk/no-type for various work and home-related reasons. It's enough to drive a browncoat lass insane. I am going steadily crazy alone. I am....utterly alone. It's what I am. Arms truly empty, though heart is supposed to be full. But tonight, my heart is empty too. And nobody 2300 miles away can do anything about either of those bodily conditions, gorramit. Mamas: Don't let your babies grow up to be long-distance lovers. They're never at home and they're always alone. Even with someone they love. (I beg the pardon of Willy Nelson for bastardizing his lyrics.)

Please critique The Losing Side - Pt. 2
Tuesday, 17 October 2006 05:53:49

Thanks for commenting about the monotone aspect; I’ll keep that in mind as I put together future chapters. That’s exactly the sort of thing that is really useful for me to know. Trying to figure out what’s interesting and what’s boring to my readers here! I’ll try to proofread more carefully; I’ll have to admit I do tend to look more for grammatical errors than spelling snafus. Writing faster.....not sure I can pull that off! I’m also tucking the comment about Wash away in my brain for review ;) I freely admit that Mal is the character I’ve studied most and have the deepest understanding of; I might well be guilty of underestimating Wash. Please, if you have any other issues or things that nag at you or bore you, let me know! It’s truly wonderful to hear what people like, but without also knowing what they dislike or where they think I’m starting to stray, I won’t get any better at this! Heck, I might even get worse, which has been my concern of late. Beginning of insanely long discussion which might interest only me: Where Khiloh is concerned, it’s a double-edged sword. I think that Mal in particular and I’m almost certain Wash as well are well-educated and intelligent enough to recognize a Stockholm syndrome/capture bonding sort of situation for what it was, and not get caught up in it. From my understanding, that is something that develops less as a result of any genuine kindness or caring on the part of the captor, and more as the victim reading small glimpses of humanity or the occasional absence of complete cruelty as a sign of benevolence, and the bonding that occurs is part self-delusion and part survival instinct. Ironically enough, in trying to shape Khiloh’s character, that’s one of the reasons I made the choice to have him as completely kind as he is. If he were a less “humanitarian” character, I don’t think I could portray a genuine friendship developing without either ignoring psychological realities or portraying a Stockholm type of situation developing……..which in my opinion would be completely out of character for Mal and Wash. If he is genuinely and cleanly a nice person, one smart enough to play the prison guard when he has to (remember, when he saw Mal in the cell after he was attacked, Khiloh didn’t throw some goody-two-shoes fit – he played it off coldly and casually enough to give Mal nightmares afterwards…..and something similar is going to happen in chapter 31), then perhaps he becomes someone that, despite his job, these guys can be friends with. In effect, I decided to duck one set of problems by making him one-dimensional in that way, but that gives me a problem when it comes to finding other ways to make him a human and believable character. I’ve given it a lot of thought recently, and I’ve decided that for the purposes of the story and the character, Khiloh needs to be very much the genuine good guy. I don’t write off the possibility that there could be essentially a grunt in the Alliance military who has more in common with the Browncoats than the outfit he signed on with to get a paying job. Many of us have jobs we hate and bosses we fear. I’ll leave the role of maybe likable/maybe scary character to Lee; it suits him. But……I still have the problem of how to make him more believably and relatably human, without destroying that. This is the first time that I’ve created an original character who plays such a big role in the story, and I just don’t know how to do it, quite frankly. Joss’s characters all have complexity and depth, whereas my character? Well, he’s a nice guy. So, any and all advice and suggestions would be welcomed with open arms! I just can’t think of “flaws” to give him that wouldn’t seem trite, and I don’t know how to bring out other aspects of his personality…..very much trying to figure that out. Thanks for all your help and advice!

Dragoncon Aftermath
Tuesday, 17 October 2006 07:08:52

This is an entry from Sep 21: It's been a few days recovery from DragonCon. We all have gone back to our mundane lives and left friends to go states away for another year. But luckily the fabulous pictures remain. I had a wonderful time. Especially the beginning. So full of promise. I have some 180 pictures to share. Speaking of, here's a picture of the finished dress for posterity.

SpaceAnJL's latest excuse...it's good news, really...
Tuesday, 17 October 2006 13:03:39

So.... I had some estate agents (realtors?) round to value my place. Haven't even put it on the market yet, and one of them phones me, asks if they can bring someone round. So I say yes, and they do. And the bloke promptly offers me top whack not to put it on the open market. Gorram thing has appreciated near fifty percent in the four years I've had it. So I'm househunting seriously now. This will unfortunately mean a slight delay between chapters. But...bigger kitchen. I've decided I want one of those cookers with the five gas rings. Including that really big one that fires up like a blowtorch. Go Marietta Arcies! Also - Study. Library. Big screen for those BDH moments. But I will get CCM finished. And I've some Xmas present in mind for my readers...

Writing has resumed on YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN
Tuesday, 17 October 2006 15:09:16

Hey All Breaking news from my end. Despite being swamped with tons of assignments from all four classes, I have resumed writing on YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN. But don't expect anything to soon. What I'm planning on is saving the next chapter, Chapter 10, for last so that I can post the following chapters the next day instead one chapter intermittently. I mean, it's ben nearly six months since my last chapter, and it would be unfair to post another chapter, then have another six month lag. I notice that people tend to post more responses when your posts are continuous, and it's the stuff after the concert that I really want people to comment on. Not to toot my own horn, but I think it's some of the best stuff I've written. So please be patient. Come December, the rest of the story will be told. Trust me, it'll be worth the wait.

Disregard
Tuesday, 17 October 2006 21:57:19

Disregard this post. (Yes, I know everyone's disregarding me already, but feh...)

Tuesday, 17 October 2006 22:15:09

I had a pretty long day today for not having any classes. I did some studying this morning and then a very intensive workout, cleaned a bit and then had to run some errands around town. (Driving in Atlanta is possibly the most strenuous activity ever.) Anyways, I finish at my doctor's appointment and come home very sleepy. I still need to go to campus and watch some videos but I figured I'd take a quick nap first, so I pop in Serenity and curl up underneath my covers. Now normally I am very particular about locking the door, but I knew my roommate was going to be home soon and for whatever reason I didn't lock it behind me. So I'm asleep and all of a sudden my door opens and two guys walk in. "Where's Mitch?" they say. I sit up and say "Who are you?" They respond with the ever enlightening, "Where's Ryan?" (Ryan is my roommate). I say "I don't know. Who are you?" They peer into my room some more. "Are you friends with Ryan?" "Well I met him when I moved in..." "Where's Mitch?" "I'm sorry but I have no idea who Mitch is." "Mitch doesn't live here?" "No..." "This isn't Mitch's room? Why are you in here?" "I live here. I'm sorry, but WHO are you?" "I'm Ryan's friend from home. When will he be back?" like he hadn't just barged in on me sleeping... "I don't know..." "Hmmm..." they think, while still standing in my room. Then they close the door. I lay back down trying to process what just happened. THE DOOR OPENS AGAIN! "Don't tell Ryan we're here.' "Okay, sure, I won't say anything..." Then they close the door again. Now Ryan is home and his two friends are shouting and cavorting in our living room. I went out there to get a movie and received no apology, no introduction, just a "hey." Now I try to be a cool and patient roommate, but I think this is a little much to be asked to tolerate happily.

Character personality test
Wednesday, 18 October 2006 00:40:35

Thanks for the response. One of the tests had quite a few questions. And it matched you up based on percentages to responses given. According to that one, I matched up 100% with being Zoe. So, that seems like it would be the most accurate. So, I guess the who am question is answered best by the one that bases the overall result on percentages. So, I guess that would make me Zoe, which is interesting. The reason that's interesting to me is that my wife has taken a couple of tests and all of her results come back as Wash. So, it would seem that we are matched up pretty properly. Wouldn't you say?

Small short spurts
Wednesday, 18 October 2006 02:06:40

I'm trying something new. Again. Still. Whatever. Short POV's from the BDHs. I figured it was worth a try. If it doesn't eventually work out I'll go back to scripts. No biggie. I'm just playing a little. Life continues to be life. We spoke with a real estate agent. We will speak to another one. We did not like him or what he had to say. If I heard the phrase "I don't mean to be the grim reaper but.." come out of his mouth one more time I would likely have slapped him repeatedly. I'm fairly confident that he does not have any idea who or what the grim reaper is, nor what the phrase he was trying to use actually may be. What a schmuck. We found his suggested selling price of 40K less than we paid for the house just 3 years ago a bit hard to swallow. So did the Realtor we had used at that transaction. You should have seen the look on her face. She assured us that she would try to find someone else to work with us. She is located 60 miles away now, so she cannot do it herself or the meeting would never have occurred. The market has not fluctuated that much in either direction where we are located. Telling us that if the property were three miles *thataway* we might get what we need did not help our estimation of him. We're out in the middle of Nofreakingwhere, corner of Hicks and Ville, three miles down a state highway connecting to the Interstate. It is so very rural as to be largely farmland and forest. There are at least 600 feet of separation between any two dwellings out here. We are on 8 acres, and that's a fairly small parcel for these parts. Don't try to tell me there's a "better address" three miles away because I know it's hogwash. There are no neighborhoods out here. The Amish are not dragging down property values as they slowly move in. It's not like they're the Crips or something for pity's sake. :pissed:

Did the personality test from this site
Wednesday, 18 October 2006 02:52:09

I did the personality from this site and I guess I know which character I am, now. I did the test based on my first instinct responses. I am Mal. Which makes two separate tests that have said I'm Mal, so that pretty much solidifies the result into Mal. Course my wife did the same test and came back as Inara. So, again we are still perfectly matched according to the same test. Well, I guess you could say there's a reason I married her. Unlike Mal, I won't let Inara get away.

Making Firefly Videos
Wednesday, 18 October 2006 12:00:07

I have seen several videos (mostly on MySpace) that are clips from Firefly (or other shows) set to music (for example, there is one of River kicking ass to the tune of 'Dance, Dance' by FallOut Boy). I want to know how to make these, as I have several good ideas I get in my head when I hear certain songs. Does anyone know how this is done / what software I need to do it ??? In fic news, I still haven't written anything. I have some sort of block, and hopefully I will be able to work it out soon. ~Jimi

another poem
Wednesday, 18 October 2006 14:28:02

A friend of mine wanted to post this poem.... It suits the other one I posted... sort of. - Brush my teeth Comb my hair Go to bed Say my prayer Monkey, monkey, in the tree Do you want to dance with me? - Norwegian naivist avantgarde has never been better.

College bound woes
Wednesday, 18 October 2006 14:46:44

#1 has had a stressful 2 years. Truthfully he has had a stressful 10 years. You see that is when he first understood what it was to be gay. He lived with what he thought was his secret until about 6 months ago. He then finally admitted it to me. The most painful thing I have ever experienced in my ENTIRE life was the look of relief on his face when he realized that I didn't care. No not that I didnt care, but that it was ok. He was him and I love him. No questions. Unconditionally. Forever and ever amen. More than all the stars the nights sky could show us and all that. How hard it must be to live with a secret you think is so horrible that your mother will not love you anymore. He is a changed person. But he still struggles. Add to all that the fact that his dad is a useless carbon based life form, and the fact that we live in a tiny rural town, surrounded by tiny rural town in the buckle of the bible belt. Taking all this in to consideration I am not really surprised that he doesn't feel ready for college. He had wanted to be a Vet his whole life, up until the last year or so. He now has no idea what he wants to do. I feel his pain as I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. If indeed I ever do. All this is the long story way of saying that he has decided to withdraw from college this semester. I am not happy. I am afraid that what he thinks is a "year off" will turn into a lifetime of struggling to get by as I do. But then I remember what a remarkable kid he is. I remember that he has grown up to honor WHO he is. He loves his family, he respects his gramma. He loves animals. I have faith in him. And then of course we could just become the stereotypical gay man living with his mom and 5 cats. I would'nt mind. He and #2 are my most favorite people in the world. Maybe we could get gramma to move in too. Love to my boys.

Vote On the Drift for Best New Album
Wednesday, 18 October 2006 17:51:23

Ni-Hao, Browncoats, The Bedlam Bards and their album _On the Drift: Music Inspired by Firefly and Serenity_ are in the running for first place in both the Renaissance Festival Music Awards and the CelticMP3s Music Awards. As you know, every time we get a chance to mention Firefly and Serenity to folks who don't yet know about it, the Browncoat Army gains new recruits. It might seem a little surprising that a science-fiction album is doing so well in these other genres, but in fact people go wild any time we play a Firefilk song at a renfaire or a Celtic bar. It's true. So we'd like to encourage all of you to vote for the Bedlam Bards (Best Music Group) and for _On the Drift_ (Best New Album of 2006) at the following URLs:

Thrust and Riposte
Wednesday, 18 October 2006 22:42:40

Pardon the fencing terms (it should be noted that I know crap about swords, except which end to hold. But Wikipedia knows all kinds of neat words). I'm trying to work out a lovely dialogue between a loopy, sarcastic Simon and cold, manipulative Mother. I've got the general idea, but it just doesn't have that verbal punch a fight between a brillaint doctor and his family should have. Anyone wanna read what I've got and tell me how to make it not suck?

Slash
Thursday, 19 October 2006 02:44:14

So, I'm not a fan of slash. Not at all, in fact. But as I was looking at some icons earlier and started wondering how much Kaylee/Inara slash was out there. Just for the simple fact that I really love thier relationship, and I wonder how many people percieve it as possibly sexual. Granted, with fangirls, almost any relationship can be considered sexual (have I mentioned the hobbit slash I've stumbled across lately), but I feel like it would be a stretch to take this almost maternal or, um, sisterful relationship and turn it sexual. Won't say pervert it, because you know, just because it's not my bag, but I certainly think that it's an extreme to go to. Granted, I don't get Rayne, for that matter. But I hate raging against the machine in fanfic and writing stuff that goes directly against canon. Just a thought.

HSC: I'm scared and pumped.
Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:35:02

It's 11:14 pm. In 10 hours and 6 minutes, my first HSC exam will commence. It's fair to say I'm scared beyond belief. I'm fretting over EVERYTHING! Have I studied enough? Do I remember all my quotes? Will I manage my time correctly (I write incredibly slowly and small)? Will I get another gorram hand cramp? Will I get a crappy desk? GOD HELP ME! At the same time I say "Bring It On!" Then again, for the Uni course I want, I don't need marks that are too spectacular. Don't get me wrong, I'm gonna try my damndest. Oh and one of the plays I have to write about? Yeah, I never got a copy. The schools excuse was (and I quote): "Sorry, but there aren't anough to go around for everyone." Me and 3 others have not read the entire work. That's why I'm forced to rely too heavily on the related texts...(yes I know I'm pretty screwed here.) The good thing is that when Supernova is on (a pop culture convention..Summer Glau will be there), I have a small window of opportunity to attend. Then it's back to exams. Creative writing I'm fairly comfortable with, I based it on the Mal/Inara relationship. I might post it here. That's just tomorrow's exam. Then I have 8 more...go me. Oh, and if you're going to wish me luck...don't. Me and a friend have decided that "Good Luck" is sorta lame, and kind of a jinx. So we invented a new saying... "Let's pray for a miracle". You'll all most likely find I'm conspicuously absent from the site. I haven't left, I'm just attending to some HARDCORE study time, and will have very very very few hours of free time; most of which will be spent either crying like a baby, panicking like a crazy person or studying some more. That's enough of my panicky ramble... Until my return, Toodles and... "Let's pray for a miracle" *** First exam is done. Was not fun (What exam is?...don't answer that), but it wasn't the torture I was anticipating. Just felt like a slightly harder than usual exam, but with WAY too much pressure. Pity I didn't finish. You know, I fair fairly okay in exams, but I think it'[s massivley unfair to those who don't that a whopping 80 percent of the UAI (University Admissions Index, the mark Uni's use to admit you...100 UAI= Einstein) has it's marks scaled by exams. I know people who are smarter than me, but I get better results then then because exams are decidedly NOT their forte'. Then again, some people cheat the system and get ludicriously high marks without even showing up! Next up: English on Monday, 3 wonderfully unfun (yes, that's a word now) hours in the poorest circulated room ever. Actually, I have three 3 hours exams next week...I need to bump up on my Augustan lines of succession...and maybe get my Business Report structure down pat (yes, that's all as boring as it sounds...God I hate study). That's enough of my bitching for now, just thought I'd let you know... Let's pray for a miracle.

It's funny. . .
Thursday, 19 October 2006 20:23:20

It's funny, I'd never even heard of Firefly or Serenity until my wife came along. I had no idea who Joss Whedon was. Hell, I barely knew what Angel, or Buffy were. Tho, Buffy I knew from the movie and knew a show had been created based on the movie. Now, it seems like I can't get enough of Firefly, or Serenity. My wife ordered a shirt for me off of cafepress.com, and a few things for herself, least of which being a messenger bag. Everything came in yesterday, and what have I done now??? I went on there today, ordered myself another shirt, and a messenger bag, but different design on the bag. How do ya like that??? I've been watching Firefly more than I watch my Star Wars, and I'm a huge Star Wars fan.(Got a couple of Star Wars tats to prove it.) But, then again, so far, about everything my wife has introduced me to, I've at least liked. At least as far as comics, Sci Fi, etc., goes. But she has like some of the stuff I've introduced her to. Oh well, I guess it should make everyone laugh and say, "well, I'll be damned", where life takes em. I am a leaf on the wind, see how I soar.

Hey Guys! Im back from my 3 day 2 night campin trip with my school! It ended up being way better than I thought it would be. Although, they had us go kayaking in 48 degree weather, while it rained. My boat flipped and after an hour of the cold wetness we went back up for lunch. I couldnt stop shaking. My friend started shaking too i had it worse. About an hour and a half later i stopped shaking. (Kayaking was obviously cancelled for the rest of the day) But minus my hypothermic incident, twas pretty awesome. And minus the fact there was no showers. Camping with unshowered teenage boys? NOT FUN!!! -5

A New Beginning

Well, I haven't been on this site in a very long time. I shall hang my head in shame. :hanged: I've been pretty ill for quite sometime now. Won't bore anyone with the details. Well, to make a long store short (too late) I've decied to make a new profile and RoxyFreefall is born. My old profile was Chyna. I didn't really post much or get to know too many people so this change isn't too drastic. I've just been too sick to be here much. I just would like to start fresh. So to all of you who knew Chyna, this is the new me. Hiya!

enjoying myself enourmously
Friday, 20 October 2006 00:35:28

since coming aboard this site, i have enjoyed putting my fanfic together more than you cold possibly imagine. it was years, many years, since i had done any writing, anf these characters fill me with the driving need to keep them alive and well, and to explore what can be done with them. My big influence is some wonderful crime fiction by a guy named Lawrence Block, who wrote a seriesof novels calledthe matt Scudder mysteries. He lieved and breathed on the underside of new york, and as seedy as it sounds, it was tremendously well written, and constant exploration into his soul, and what the dark side of life in the city does to his soul. I am trying to bring that to my writing. Everything i write, i do it as if it were an episode, with actors cast in my mind to give everything more reality in my imagination, and hopefully more reality in my writing. I hope everyone is enjoying it so far!

Hello everybody, Well let me say it in a word "Success!" Found out a few minutes ago That my sister had called early in the week and left a couple messages I failed to get. "Z, it's Monday night we've just finished watching the final eps of Firefly and are ready for the BDM asap." I didn't get the messages because I was working but now that I have gotten them and talked to her I can see other browncoats in the making. Good news I feel and the verse keep expanding. see ya,Z

Something a little different
Friday, 20 October 2006 14:22:33

i read a thread last night about not seeing enough crosover fiction out here, and that got my sick and twisted mind to working. I remember seeing Jason X, and thinking the concept was pretty clever, just done with a low budget cast ( allthough lexa doig is infinitely fun to watch, oink-oink). anyhow, if you're of a mind to do so, go to the blue sun room, there is something posted there a little lighter than my other stuff, just for some halloween season fun.

Browncoat NEWS FLASH !!! Starting 'em young.
Sunday, 22 October 2006 00:23:23

So there I am at the mosque and one of our members, a kid in the 7th grade, comes up & asks me to pray for him so he can get better grades. Seems he got a D in Language Arts (what we called English when I was in school)... So I say, Sure, no problem. After some conversational meandering, where the kid is telling me how he likes toread but hates to write essays, and how his teacher had made them all write a 17-page essay after they watched the movie "Serenity" and the kid didn't 'get' the movie. I'm thinking, his teacher is showing the entire 7th grade class the movie "Serenity"... Could the teacher's a Browncoat... Also, the movie would be appropriate language-wise cuz all the swearing's in Chinese for the most part. So I tell the kid to ask his teacher is she's a Browncoat. The kid asks "What's a Brownocat?" "Nover mind" says I, "Just ask. Dong ma?"

finishing river taken
Sunday, 22 October 2006 00:59:11

I finally wrapped up a finish to "A River Taken" as was requested by a number of people, the real purpose of which was to examine how these characters are contending with all that had gone down in the previous story, and what it would mean to them in the future, and don't worry, there is no shiny, may-sue type ending, key people are still at odds and unhappy. Where wold be the fun in everyone getting what they want? Question for everyone: I wouldlike to put together a nice little bit of charmingly horrific fare for halloween coming up, and incorporate a little crosover fun at the same time. now, i don't really feel comfy and cozy (and we all kow how important that is to me) breaking from canon and introducing aliens, so i am down to vampires, or an ode to george a romero (who is to be worshipped!). My question, then is this: what's your fancy? Let me know.

I am a little worried about my toes
Sunday, 22 October 2006 22:57:27

OK So, I am on my feet 11 hours a day. When I first started the new job I was wearing a pair of black shoes that I had. Leather Nike high tops. NOT the softest comfiest shoes on earth. My big toes started to hurt. A LOT. And now the toesnails are purple. I know this is from the bruise under the nail. I worry because it is not going away. I know you all don't care about this. But then neither does anyone else! LOL. I think I will try soaking my feet in epsom salt. I suppose gangrene would mean disability! On another note, there is this feral cat at work. She had a baby until some idiot on the crew ran over it. I want to bring her home, but can not afford the cost of having her fixed, declawed, wormed, vacinated and all. I really don\t know what to do. She is so sad looking, has no shelter and winter is coming. Any ideas?

Finis.
Sunday, 22 October 2006 23:01:41

Well, we got the flooring down upstairs. That only required pulling the old carpet out from under ther toilet (had to remove the john to do so), ditto the large sink cabinetry (ditto the moving as someone had actually run the carpet not only under the cabinets but partway up the wall behind it instead of cutting it to size), and lifting the cast iron clawfoot tub to remove small patches of carpet from under the feet and put in the tile squares. It's finished. I'm finished. Now it's the next owner's headache. Did I mention the small leak from undoing the plumbing so we could move the sink? Next: wallpapering the downstairs bath. I do so love wallpapering. (Briefly considers "finger" emoticon) The walls are just too uneven to get away with simply slapping a coat of paint on them. Prepasted vinyl is going up. Fret not, it is a matte finish, in a relatively tasteful blue wash. I steamed off a particularly unpleasant embossed pearlized extremely busy BLUE ROSE floral, lace, and ribbon patterned paper shortly after we moved in. That was very satisfying. Not quite as fulfilling as painting over the Bubblegum Pink clawfoot tub, but close. The wallpaper had been laid directly over a previous layer of paper with a simple little rosebud (1/16") pattern. Unfortunately, as is often the case when you do this, the mildew had taken hold in the old wheat paste between them. I scrubbed with bleach for days, then painted it with an inhibitory primer. That was about 3 years ago. Never got 'round to painting, you know how you just get used to looking at a room without really seeing it? Yeah. So I'll be painting the cabinetry and trim while I'm at it. Gripe gripe whinge moan.

which i just finished watching at a friends house (and which, incidently, they're now playing again. i wanted to watch a second time through (maybe muted?) but my friend didnt go for it :P anyway, it was interesting. as an actual movie, it wasnt really great, but it was actually better then i expected (i was judging from mamoth) and there was more plot then i expected, and some interesting plot twists. i just felt like they didn't really make you care enough; I cared, but only 'cause i didnt want to see summer get her throat slit, i dont feel like non-fans would really have cared too much. also, there was a miror scene where they did some interesting things to her body (mostly in the chest area) which frankly i thought was QUITE unsettling; summer happens to be absolutely beautiful, so to change anything, even 'to better (impossible, imo)' it really just detracts.

What about Chewey?
Monday, 23 October 2006 09:29:29

Yes Chewbacca. The sasquatch of Star Wars fame. The poor guy has had only one acting job ever!and who wants to be known only as Han Solo's sidekick?Soooooooo my idea is simple. Why not use this poor creature's under appreciated talent to some long awaited use?Now we all know that a 2/nd serenity movie is still possible to date.and fact is that if one is going to be produced,WHO WILL TAKE WASH'S PLACE????.Several idea folk can i guess, but Little Richards woooo would just get him shot.Richard Simmons non-stop rant's and excessive flamboyance would get him thrown out the hatch. We all know about the peculiar habit of the actor formally known as PeeWee Herman. That leaves a number of avialable folk for the part, but Chewy needs to be brought up out of the abyss of conformity, and exercise his right to be DIFFERENT,to be RECKOGNIZED.Why not hire him to take wash's place.Besides,he is an expert pilot.Thats it.After much thought i've decided not to bring up the idea that Chewey and Kaylee will have sex in the movie, thus bringing forth an entirely new race called Kaybacca's that can then be formatted into a new series.I will leave that part out.But Chewy as Wash's replacement,i think is bliss. Please dont think im dissing oh Washie.he's from my neck of the woods and i really like the guy.Im not totally sure, but i believe one of the symptoms of Firefly withdrawel,is the totally outrageous and infantile abuse of a good thing-hmmmm maybe not.

Middle of October now and it's about 42 degrees outside in the morning or late night. Got a roommate finally, Kj. Found her on Craig's List by her reply to my posted ad. She's been here only a few days but is a good person and good company. Her half of the rent is a help toward saving for a new used car. So living conditions are much better with life in here with me. Decided I don't want to live alone if I can help it. Ever.

I cannot believe those things have only been around 5 years. They are such a huge part of our culture now that it's incredible to think that they've only existed for 5 years...just had to share this :)

Monday, 23 October 2006 15:32:25

One of the characters for the Serenity RP has been sick, so I don't know when the next chapter will be up for Firefly: AU. Anyway, I've been doing good, even though I've been pretty busy with all the work I'm doing. I've recruited another Browncoat. A friend of mine really liked the first disc of the DVD, so I'm letting him borrow the rest of 'em. I don't lend 'em out all at once...makes me nervous. I have to get another box set. *sigh* And then some things are just blech. :bash:

Pilot Ep Discussion
Monday, 23 October 2006 21:36:04

Partly this post is a test, because I'm trying to figure out how this site works; but, partly, it's my attempt at starting some sort of Firefly discussion, so feel free to respond. Spoilers abound below! I remember seeing/hearing/reading, I forget where, that Joss made the pilot, screened it for Fox, and they *hated* it. Wasn't what they wanted at all. What they did want was apparently unclear, but Joss's attempt to satisfy was the train robbery ep, which was more of a traditional action piece, and IIRC was the first ep aired. When I heard/read that, whichever it was, I thought, "eh?" They didn't like the *pilot*? Of *Firefly*? Do these people have rocks for brains? Have they never seen a pilot before? I've seen plenty of pilots, and guess what -- most of them are really, really, *really* bad. Ever seen the "Seinfeld" pilot, just to take an example from a show that survived and thrived? It's bad. The timing's off, the actors aren't solid in their characters yet . . . it's not funny. How that show lived past its pilot . . . well, it has nothing to do with the quality of the pilot episode, that's for sure. The pilot ep of Firefly was *not* like most pilots. Every actor had a solid grip on their character; the interactions rang true; the timing was perfect. The story was fun, managing to introduce a fairly large cast in a fairly short time with a great deal of clarity, as well as having plenty of actiony stuff. The entire cast, with one glaring exception, seemed as though they had worked together for years and had the thing down pat. They were *good* -- with, as I said, one exception in the casting, and a couple of scenes that didn't really work. The only bit of miscasting in the entire thing ultimately turned out not to matter, because Mal shot that guy and dumped him out the cargo lock. The scenes that didn't work were Inara's scenes with her client, which needed to be either more or less graphic (the way the love scene was played was just . . . what's the word I'm looking for? . . . cheesy?), and seemed as though Morena hadn't quite yet decided how to play the character. But once she came aboard Serenity, she was right in tune. Also, the whole thing was just *lots* and *lots* of fun. What kind of knuckleheaded, braindead lice could *not* like "Serenity"? I'd really like to know.

I'm in the market for a vanity license plate.
Monday, 23 October 2006 22:12:30

I want one REALLY badly! I was thinking about having mine say "VERA21" I wonder if it's taken already? Anyway, I think I'll ask at the DMV when I go to get my full license three days! I wonder how much coin I'll have to drop to get a vanity plate? Well, that's all for now, Off to go thinking about the vanity plate I'll have to wait five or more years to get! JOSSISAGOD!

A rant about Forbidden Planet International.....
Tuesday, 24 October 2006 11:24:38

Okay, hands up who would wait 6 months for a 6 inch long peaice of scultured lead? Well, i have been waiting that long for a Hasbro Battlestar Galactica die cast ... thing. I ordered it back in May this year, and i'm STILL waiting. No news, no apolige, NOTHING!!! That and they have the cheek to send me a catalogue 6 months down the line! (which has so many preatty things in, yet theres the big doubt of "will i get them?") Again, no news or whatever, just a sodding catalogue. At this piont i'm pissed off, and yet have no idea what to do. Who can i complain too when i've only placed an order (they havn't taken any money out of my account), or when their e-mails are the same old drivel. Its just really crap, and i'm hacked off with it. If anyone else has had any problems, or knows what too do, please help a fellow browncoat in trouble :crap: Cheers  p.s; that, and if anyone knows how i can get hold of a Serenity statue (in the UK), that would be appreciated as well.

Why Don't People Streak Anymore?
Tuesday, 24 October 2006 15:23:28

I know that some people do, but it doesn't really happen at political rallies and the like. In the 70's everyone was willing to take off their clothes and run around. Hell, Purdue University even had the nude olympics. So what has happened to all the people willing to get naked? Just a thought to ponder!

this made my day
Tuesday, 24 October 2006 18:16:57

I got an e-mail today, I won't say from whom, that doesn't really matter, telling me how much he (or she, I don't know which just yet) admired the stuff I've done so far and asked me to be a beta reder. I was so damn blown away that someone should think that much they would want me to read their stuff. of course I said yes, my fingers damn near tripped over themselves getting that e-mail back to the person. Like everyone else, I am doing this for fun, entertaining the vastly fantastic notion that some network finally grows a pair and takes another shot at Firefly, and that joss looks to these Fanfic sites for writing talent (of course I know that's a bunch of crap, but what's life without a few reams......hell without dreams, none of you would be reading this, right?). Obviously, none of us are getting paid (allthough if your read my resposne to the guy in the blue sun room threads thanking the fanfic writers, I guess I did get a little excited about how I figure I eally AM getting paid). We're all just having fun. I'm 38 years old, and once upon a time someone took an interest in my writing, someone whom i respected, and that made a lot of difference for me, both as a writer and as a person, and I hope I can offer the same to this person, and anyone else that asks me. I was really, really touched by this, and all I can say is that i hope i can fulfill this role in the manney that best helps you to be a better writer and a better person

Don't be too squeemish.
Tuesday, 24 October 2006 18:41:37

just wanted to mention, and you know who you are, there was no depiction of rape or sexual abuse in "A River Taken." I personally don't believe in graphic depictions of such, I feel that the imagination is infinitely more graphic than my keyboard ever could be. I have always thought that the original Halloween, by John Carpenter, is one of the scariest movies ever made, because there as very little gore, or even sightings of him, until the end (much like the original Alien). Your imagination is what tortured you so much, and my imagination is what gave me so many sleepless nights after seeing Michael Meyers in action for the first time (I was just way too young for the experience!) The point I am making is that I was called to task for not giving a worning about rape or other abuse, but I did not depict it. I let you determine what had happened, and I am willing to bet if i randomly picked 10 of you and asked you to tell me how you envisioned it, I would get ten different enswers, which is precisely what i shot for. However, I did state, in no uncertain terms, that this was a dark and nasty story, and i would have thought that this would be sufficient, being as how I have read plenty of fics out here that were far more graphic. (I remember one with Simon being being raped by a female Reaver, and let me tell you, that was like an anti-viagra). I always saw FF/BDM as something for bright grown-ups, and I am going to write for bright grown-ups, even if it's something fun ( like finding jason Voorhees), and if the caveat says words like dark, nasty, disturbing, or anything like that, please, by all means, expect the very worst. Therwise, hang on and enjoy the ride, I've got a ton of thoughts and ideas I mean to put into words!

GYAAAARRRRRRGH!!!!!
Tuesday, 24 October 2006 19:39:06

Actual excerpt from a University-level essay that I'm proofreading:
Security focus has changed throughout history and is changing towards a more extensive concept of that concern. Security analysts became willing instrument of their national policy makers for intellectualizing the national opinion of all those altercations of different ideologies or cultures, and in the process, surrendered their dispassionate judgment. Security post cold war and security post 9/11 are those of different in focus although it seems instead of going forward international security is going in cercal. Where should state, individually focus on and what should international regime focus on when it comes to security measure? Many new policies within state and between states are not focusing on only military economic and physical aspect of security; for example security as a social, particularly in US where state declared war on drugs. Second example is the vigilantes who are trying to deal with illegal immigrants they are armed and act as military force to clear out illegal immigrants or send them back to their countries. Human security, security as liberation where government takes security measure against its own citizen, take Sudan for example where the government of Khartoum is helping the militia to destroy Darfurians.
This, BTW, is the FIRST paragraph. This is gonna be a long one. :(

Contains a fair amount of feeling sorry for myself, if you don't want to hear it, please don't read it! I know somebody is going to click on this ready to curse me out, but it's from Family Guy, and I had no part in it's inception. So, if you want to curse somebody out, his name is Seth McFarlane. Well, so, I've been kinda like, freaked out because after professing my love for the greatest band in the world (The Dixie Chicks) AKA (apparently) the band that shall not be named, I feel like I need to worm my way back into the good graces of Browncoats everywhere. Granted, I've only gotten a couple of posts to the effects of "we hate you and since you're in America, you need to learn to speak American!' but I'm a liberal (more moderate leanings than some) and I feel the way I feel about things. I don't like Bush, I don't like the war in Iraq, I don't like brussel sprouts, these things aren't going to change. But, that's really not the point. You're talking about a person who doesn't just celebrate their birthday as a birthday, but celebrates it as the first time in 1999 that they first heard the Dixie Chicks. This is more than an obsession. This is a way of life. I don't like U2. I'm not going to say hate, but I really, really don't like them. Why? It's totally not important. But there have been plenty of icons and wallpapers done with U2 as the subjects. Would I give that person a hard time because I don't like U2? Heck, no. I would probably just keep going to the next thing. I just don't want a wiggly feeling in my gut when I log on to Fireflyfans.net. I'm a fairly new Browncoat (about a year) and I don't want to think of somebody getting uncomfortable here, and not connecting with other Browncoats. Anyway, yeah, so, I'm just going to continue being me, and I hope that's good enough.

Sad entry

Sorry, gang, but after several agonizing days of emails we..MalN, and FollowM, decided to shut down the store before we get shut down by TPB's. We still have the site up for a while as sort of a showcase for my art but, unfortunatly, you wont be able to purchase prints of my work from the site...A sad state of affairs, but not totally unexpected... To all those that ordered prints thanks and they're on the way...I'll just have to post here more often..so you all can still see my stuff..I just wont see any money from it..... Keep flyin' Ya'll

It's raining
Wednesday, 25 October 2006 19:27:32

hi there It's raining, it's cold and i am seriously bored. I've been at uni all week, Monday was fun, had my Jarrow Crusade lecture; which is always good. Tuesday was slightly less interesting, I got to listen to my lecturer completely bash the book we are studying (It's called site sof memory, sites of mourning). On the up side i got to talk to a lass I haven't seen in ages (even though she goes to my university and is in fact in my year). anyway TTFN Jennifer

Me = No Supernova.
Friday, 27 October 2006 07:16:41

WARNING. THIS IS A WHINGE. Sent all sympathy to me. I can't go to Supernova, because as I like to so put it "My parents suck." Being 18 in Australia means I can drink, smoke, buy knives. My parents are cool with that (not that I smoke or buy knives, but Tequila is my friend). What they are decidedly NOT cool with is me going to Sydney (I live about 2 and a bit hours by car away) for a day. Stubborn oldies that they are. All I wanna do is go down there, see Summer Glau and get her autograph, buy some swag and meet some fellow Browncoats. I WAS gonna sneak out, but I have no moolah for the train ticket, let alone anything else. I'd need a loan for it. They have no problemo loaning me money for anything else (DVD's, games, books, etc) but for something I REALLY want to go to? Nope, sorry but 'no can do'. It's not like I've ever NOT payed them back. As far as I'm concerened the only thing worse than a favour, is a favour involving money, so I make it a thing to make borrowing it a last resort, and paying it back a first priority. If I can't go, I might pop down to the local book store and spend my meager funds on the 'Serenity Official Visual Companion'. However, if anyone feels so unfunnily, incredibly, amzingly, tremdedously, stupendously, horrifically generous, maybe pick up some swag for me? I know that's an outragous request (believe me, I know more tha you think), but I'm desperate. I'm not asking for much, just small stuff. and I will of course, pay you for it. IF you feel like being a saint, then contact me, my msn is amorphicbeing at hotmail dot com and my myspace is

The new path
Friday, 27 October 2006 09:08:18

I've been a browncoat from the start. Waaaay back just after the turn of the millenium. I watched. Alone, in my apartment. Everyone I knew at hte time, unaware of the magic that came on the screen. Disjointed as it was, I thought I was already behind on the show so I watched as often as I could (taping episodes so that I could catch it better during another run through) when it was cancelled, I felt like I was the only person in the world who was infuriated. I wrote literally hundreds of letters, to fox then universal then to several companies begging them to pick up the rights to the show. Then I heard murmurs of others fighting this fight, but my life at the time prevented me from ever getting in contact with anyone like myself, A browncoat. So I carried on, And serenity was released and my heart soared. I felt like we had finally won. Just a bit more and we'd be sailing in the clear...And all of it reminded me of serenity valley. and I feared that our fight would parallel the real browncoats. We could catch glimpses of a happy future but it would not come.. flash forward another year after serenity. And I showed my girlfriend of two years firefly (as my tapes had long since disintegrated into dust) on DVD which I had only recently found and was quickly purchased. She loved it from the first moment (she is a film student, and adored the time and effort so obviously put into the show) and every episode she raved about its production quality and the characters and story. And then she asked me why it was cancelled. and i couldn't give her a good reason. In the interim of fighting for this show's revival, the idea of being alone as a fan slowly eroded my will to fight. Who was a fighting for if I was so alone? So I scoured the 'verse looking for others like me, and I stumbled across this place. Lordy, all that time feeling alone and everyone was moments away. I had fought alone, terribly alone only to find out years later I wasn't alone, That I wasn't insane for loving a show that emphasized character and interaction over action. And while there was plenty of action. it was the characters who in fluid discussion dealt with everything from death to abandonment. And it was astounding how much was covered in such a short time. And I felt it needed more. Joss showed masterful skill with firefly. to me it exceeded his previous work. because while it was sci-fi. It was completely grounded in reality. And that amazed the hell outta me. I'm glad to know I'm not alone. I'm glad you all held the line together when I had no idea that you were there. I'm glad you're still fighting as hard as I, and in many cases even harder. I'm glad now, I can help co-ordinate ways to save that which makes us what we are. Browncoats. Something I will be forever. :blast: Because try as they might No one will take the sky from me.

One whole year?! How shiny!
Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:50:16

Well, fellow 'Coats. It seems like I joined the ranks a year ago today when I went to see the 10:30 showing of Firefly last October. It was actually a thursday night, and I had school the next morning  Hard to believe it's been a whole year! I remember the moment I saw Serenity hit atmo for the first time on the big screen, with the amazing music playing, I was hooked. I dragged my friends a half an hour away in November to see a second screening of it, and I even hosted a Serenity Party at my home when the DVD came out. 14 people came, and we ate Chinese food! I also brought a friend to the Serenity Day screening in Chicago. It's definitely been an amazing ride so far, everyone. And I hope it doesn't end here!

Rascal Flatts!!

I love music... "The Man In Love With You" If you think I've second guessed it Or for one minute I'd regret it This life with you No, there's never been a moment Not one time I haven't known it What I have with you You hold my heart Deep inside of every single part [Chorus] If I could be anything I wish that I could be, oh baby If I could rule all the kingdoms Maybe even sail the seven seas If I could do all the things I only dream that I could do I'd still be The man in love with you I try every day to show it Just to make sure that you know it I'm here to stay And you'll never have a reason To ever think I'm leaving There's just no way It's no mystery How I feel Baby, can't you see [Chorus] I can't go places I always see traces Of the only thing in life I'll ever need If I could do all the things I only dream that I could do I'd still be The man in love with you I'd still be The man in love with you

It seems like . . .
Saturday, 28 October 2006 20:30:23

It seems like I'm the only one that's way obsessed with Firefly/Serenity, sometimes. I know I'm not, but it feels like it sometimes. Especially livin here in SC. There's not a lot of Browncoats here. In fact, aside from my wife and I; I only know of two maybe three other people who even know what Firefly, or Serenity, is. I've got a bag and two firefly shirts with two more shirts and a bumper sticker on the way, but they're mostly lost on the population here. Course then again, the people who know what Firefly is are the closest of my friends, so it's not completely lost. While we(my wife and I) were borrowing her mom's copy of Firefly, I was watching an episode or three every day. Now that we had to give it back, I watch Serenity every day. I need to get my own copy of the series, but can't afford it at this time. But yet, I've got a traditional Japanese sleeve on my left arm in the works. But, then again, I've only got 7 more hours to go b4 it's done. Oh well, thanx for lettin me ramble about nothing in particular. Hope everyone's day is shiny.

Just signed up...
Saturday, 28 October 2006 22:35:22

I've known about this place for a few days now, and I finally gathered the guts to join and actually submit something *gasp*! I didn't become a browncoat until my best friend shoved Serenity in my face, of which I thanked her rigourously afterwards. She hasn't become one herself, but I'm working on that, Anyways, I hope to have a blast here!

If I no longer post, it is not because I don't care. We have been getting posts saying we are wasting bandwidth. Know that I have enjoyed my time with all of you on that most wonderful thread. Thank you for teaching me about Australia and Invader Zim and what fun people can have with a simple thread. I take a lot of precious memories with me as I leave this thread. I'm sorry Hell's Kitten. Did not mean to accuse or offend anybody. I just don't understand why this thread is picked on lately. No, you did not call us foolish and if I implied you did, I apologize. It was not just your post that instigated my reaction. There have been others. So please do accept my apology, not to you. I don't find anyone's post offensive. You were all showing concern for the site. And that is not offensive. So this is an apology to all those I offended. As I said, I will no longer post there. I don't want to cause any problems with the site. PS Thank you Savewash for your reply. I enjoyed our sharing and that means a lot to me.

Temporary Goodbye
Sunday, 29 October 2006 17:00:42

You may not hear much from me in November (you haven't exactly heard a lot from me recently either, but that's because one of the trolls is really making threads unpleasant so I've cut back). Please don't worry, it's because I'm going to try writing a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. No, I'm not the only one doing this. We're all here: www.nanowrimo.org. I have no idea if I'll be able to do it, but I've gotta give it a try, you know? If anyone else is interested, please sign up! I think it will be an adventure, especially if I manage to stay sane. I'll try to let you all know how I did at the end of the month. In the meantime, I'll probably lurk here a lot but not post very much. Thanks in advance for the threads that will help keep me sane! I'll be back in December.

Newbie...

Hello everyone, I'm new to the browncoat verse but am glad that I'm here finally! As my profile says I was first introduced to the JW verse with Serenity and once I found out that there was a series...I had to have it. I can't believe that Firefly only lasted 1 year. That's just silly. I don't watch much television, mostly just movies and football. There just isn't anything with any intelligence to it that is worthwhile. One of the things that I love about Serenity & Firefly is that it was smart and funny. I can definitely see where it doesn't fit in with "todays" television that for the most part you can check your brain at the couch before watching. Half way through watching the Series for the 1st time I looked at my wife and I told her that Firefly was too smart for the American public and would have received a better reception in England where character development and excellent writing are more appreciated. In the U.S. if you don't have the fake drama of reality TV or sex or something blowing up it's just boring. It's too bad really but I hold out hope for the future!

It's a Wedding!!!
Monday, 30 October 2006 16:38:06

My cute lil' Julie bean just got married this past Sat.! It was such a great wedding, so fun, full of dancing and great food and dancing. Um, did I mention the dancing?? I haven't danced in sooooo long and I prolly shouldn't have cause I'm still recoving, but it was a BLAST! The hubby and I got to swing dancing and I just couldn't stop myself. Oh well. Julie looked so beautiful. See!!

Well, here we are...
Monday, 30 October 2006 16:49:08

Well, the house hunt paid off. We have one lined up, and we hope to be in by Xmas. *cue hollow laugh* This does mean that my life is being doled out into cardboard boxes. My Firefly things (dvds, notebooks, reference materials) are all in one box by the desk - it's kind of an emergency kit thing, the way you don't pack the tea-bags and the kettle on move day. Odd how much you can do without when you can't get to it on a day to day basis. What with the unsettled state, it's making it difficult to actually sit and write. I'm a chapter or so off the end of my present fic. But I'm drafting the next one in advance, so I don't get caught by circumstance again. Hopefully, once I move, I will have a dedicated office. (Husband is naturally concerned as to the decor. I'm thinkin' yellow, with little stencilled vines round the door, mebbe a shingle and some little lights. The homey look... It's either that, or a big-ass gunrack and some dodgy chinese ideograms.) So...blessings at Samhain to all my buds out there. If I can't get on-line at home, I can at least scan my mail at work (in a covert fashion) so bring me news and gossip from your corners of the 'Verse. It's getting a mite cold and lonely out here in the Black. One SAD and sorry SpaceAnJL.

A " shiny " Monday.
Monday, 30 October 2006 21:58:20

A truly terrific day here in the South. The sun was out, not a cloud in the sky, as I wandered into a friendly Waffle House for breakfast to start the day. The young waitress asked me how I was doing as I sat down, and I replied with a smile, "shiny!". She was so taken back by my reply, she confessed to having not heard that one before. She paused for half a moment, and then said she liked it. Breakfast was fine and as I left, she told me to have a 'shiny' day ! I left her a nice tip.

Hey everyone
Monday, 30 October 2006 23:33:33

Hey everyone. . . Just in the interest of "shameless self-promotion" I want to let everyone here that's on myspace.com about my band. I am in a band called Shotgun Bride. I urge everyone to go to myspace.com/shotgunbride and check my band out, and let me know what ya'll think. That's pretty much all I got. See everyone on the flip side

cool Katt
Tuesday, 31 October 2006 00:05:23

My brother got out of the navy in 96 and he got himself a cat. It was a Siamese Burmese mix and being one of my family members he named him Katt. Long story short, Katt came to live with mom. She has had him for 5 or 6 years now. This is the biggest cat I have ever seen. He is not fat, he is just HUGE. I understand that Burmese can be quite large, but we are talking BIG CAT territory. Like a bobcat or summat. Anyway, Katt is well loved and has become a much needed member of the parental units family. And now he is sick. He has not eaten in a week and is now at the vets being force fed. They can find nothing wrong. I am afraid they will have to put him down and it will just destroy my stepDad. So send some browncoatie good thoughts Katts way. We need him home.

a firefly halloween

So I dressed up as Inara for a halloween party, with my friend Maria as Kaylee. We looked shiny and no one knew who we were. It was so sad.

SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP
Tuesday, 31 October 2006 02:43:47

Sorry Its too much. I am sick and tired of all the crap on this site. And I just long to stand in the middle of the 'verse and scream SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP at the top of my voice. SHUT UP. GROW UP. We will now return to our regularly scheduled program.

Wow...
Tuesday, 31 October 2006 13:38:37

That was quite a lot of welcomes! Thank you all for you kind words! A comment on BlueEyedBrigadier's question. Yes indeed, how does one convert someone to a Browncoat if they are not a Browncoat themselves? Well, let's just say, she made me aware of Serenity, then I did the rest. When I learn about things I have a tendency to go and investigate these things if they hit a cord in me (Serenity had me reliving the same experience I had when I saw Star Wars), so I was pretty much dedicated anyway). I saw a lot of familiar things, the way Mal almost was a Han Solo-ish character, the old western style, guns, old battered spaceships. It was a mix of things I loved, and the way the film presented itself just kinda trapped me and wouldn't let go.

Happy Halloween!!!

Happy Halloween Everyone!!!! Hope everyone has an awesome, fun and safe Halloween!! At this festive time, everyone should remember, it's for fun, don't take things too seriously.

I'm an E-town Browncoat now!
Tuesday, 31 October 2006 20:17:27

Well, I am all moved in and I call E-town PA home now. SO that makes me an E-town Browncoat. Fortunatly for me I have discovered that one of my brother's new friends is a fan as well ( he is in love with Inara, but what else is new?)and I plan on having a Firefly marathon this weekend with them. One of his other friends has never seen it so I smell an attempt at converting coming on after all it can't hurt to try right? It has been such a long while since I've been in the Verse and watched our BDH in action that I think I was having withdrawls, you know Firefly withdrawls. I know mine are happening when everything reminds me of anybody on the crew, I start creating excuses to say lines from the show have firefly related dreams and wear a lot of brown. The only difference between that and being a fan is the fact that I haven't been watching Firefly lately and I miss it. Hmmmm. I have to remedy that this weekend as soon as possible. So I am settling in and getting to know some new places and people but as always I am proud to waar that dusty Browncoat and long to sail in a Firefly.
