New home!
Sunday, 01 May 2005 06:15:53

We're all but moved in to the new place now! My stuff isn't all here, but part of it is an hour away, the other part is an hour point five. But my dad's bringing his part tomorrow and I'm getting the rest later this week! Static and I are so very jazzed right now. It's bigger, brighter, warmer, more amenable than the last place. And the perks are a heck of a lot cooler, too. I'm actually typing at you three days early, as the cable wasn't supposed to be hooked up until Tuesday. So yay us!

Minor Observances/Petty Annoyances
Monday, 02 May 2005 13:17:08

I love my children, very much. Not so much with other people's kids, and my wife thinks that means there's something wrong with me. Annoyance Level: 3 Don't eat...all day. I have lived like this for years, and when I get home, the overwhelming need for something hot and containing a meat of some kind is...well, overwhelming. My wife, on her way out to a meeting of some kind says "Fix a sandwich or something." This occurs at least twice a week. Annoyance Level: 2 Typing on Fireflyfans.net is an excellent way to ensure that one of my bosses is going to come tramping through my office door at any minute. Annoyance Level: 4 I put a DVD in. Whoever's watching says "What's this?" (I've covered this before. I can't understand the notion of not waiting 10 seconds to see for yourself.) Annoyance Level: 5 Watching Firefly, and the schmuck I'm trying to show it to won't stop talking over dialogue that I'm trying to get him to hear. Annoyance Level: 4 My wife promises sex all day. Come night time...SNOOZE. Annoyance Level: 8 In the parking lot at work, there's only one space to occupy. After I get in my car to leave, car's covered in sap. Annoyance Level: 6 (With myself...like I didn't know sap comes out of trees!) My boss says he doesn't want me bringing my children to the squadron, as its an idnustrial area. Walking around the same afternoon, I see at least six children roaming about. Annoyance Level: 4 Book purists in movies that can't keep their word holes shut. Annoyance Level: 8 Writing a flylog on annoyance. Annoyance Level: 2

Wode tìan!
Monday, 02 May 2005 15:49:24

What a weekend! Loads of Browncoats, some incredible costumes (the only person more surprised than me was Alan Tudyk, who was absolutely blown away!), and the guests were just ace. Nice, friendly folks who were happy to talk and meet anyone and everyone, whether it be in the talks, the photograph or autograph sessions, or at the bar. Nathan's practically a one man show, so funny, but with everyone else it was just a riot. With all the jokes and banter flying back and forth between everyone it's so obvious they are all the very best of friends. Anyone who has not met the ladies might think they know how gorgeous they are, but they really have no idea at all. Just... wow. I'm sure the same applies to the Big Damn Gents, but I'm not really qualified to answer that. I think I can hear a resounding "YES!" from where I'm sitting, though... Summer is the official Starfury Favourite Guest without doubt. But Nathan... he's the man. He's everyone's captain, yes sirree. "You can't take the flan from me..."

My Big Damn Convention Blog
Monday, 02 May 2005 17:30:06

I thought I'd share my delight at being at the first Firefly convention and indeed my first convention too. From the moment I arrived, everyone was enthused, friendly and fun, it seemed comfortable to talk to anyone there, even if it was just to admire their costumes or ask how far they'd come (and some came from really far away). A big hi to everyone I met, however briefly. A huge apology to everyone whose name I didn't catch or obliterated with one of those oh so many bottles of Stella, but I was glad I got to speak to a fair few of those on this very board, especially Darin (whose costume is even better in the flesh/cloth), Jamie (who I hope arrived safely back yesterday), "Cap'n" Eric (good luck with your powers of persuasion so you can make it to the next one), Izzy and Louisa (remember, you are never allowed to tell anyone that I was being beaten by a girl), Mike (I'll see you next on Living TV I guess!), Flo (her posters came out wonderfully, I have a lot of everybody's signatures on my wall now), Ruthie (whose expression when a Ruthie Fan badge was pulled out on her was priceless), Brian (I owe you a beer, come to the next convention), Matt/PsychicRiver (I definitely owe you a pint, I think we must have kept missing each other by moments, really disappointed that I didn't catch up with you), Kirsty/DoubleShiny (who did so well with her questions to the BDHs, much much better than me), really just a big thank you to everyone I met, there was not one unfriendly person there. Next time I will be all prepared with name badges and organise my time better to do more things around the photo sessions and autograph collecting (although I had great fun in the queue for those too). I'm also looking to add a few more Wonderfalls fans, have to set aside a 45 minute slot or two next time for it. The fans present would have made it a really great weekend but we also had 8 fabulous guests too. Sean Harry made a speech at the end about how great the guests had been behind the scenes which was wonderful because they'd been fantastic in front of them. Sadly Adam Baldwin had to cancel but a) we had been prepared for it and b) he also sent a video message over, with his own twisting of The Man They Call Jayne, complete with nifty hat. Chris Buchanan, the executive producer of the movie was probably the biggest surprise for me. Funny, smart, in perfect key with the fans, charming and diplomatic, particularly when the 'F' word was mentioned (that's "Fox", obviously). The sort of guy who might end up giving Hollywood producers a good name. Mark Sheppard felt like one of us, as comfy talking to the fans as he was with his co-stars. I heard several tales about his wicked sense of humour too. I now seriously regret not getting him to sign a photo. Like his character, he's no bad guy and deserves to return at the next available big screen outing. Jewel was adorable, funny, as happy talking about the demands of playing an alcoholic as her shoes and Maui. She was so obviously pleased to be reunited with the rest of the cast plus she got to give Nathan the finger (we should have shown them how we do things here in England - two fingers is traditional). Morena is so stunning in person that it's almost a pity because every time she talked about possible roles for her, acting heroes, the 'process', characters, reading Shakespeare, her eyes just lit up and she was so enthused. It was impossible not to see how much she loves acting and how that is what's important to her, not the way she looks. Summer was so sweet, talking about how she came into dancing and acting, her childhood and her influences (Dirty Dancing! 1 and 2!). She was so open to the audience that it was almost unnerving, particularly when this time next year, she'll have a few million more fans. I also should mention that it is unfair that these three ladies can party to the early hours and still turn up to a 9 o'clock photo shoot, looking as though they had been carefully prepared for it by sleeping for the previous week. Ron Glass gave every q

Glowing Recommendations
Wednesday, 04 May 2005 11:26:34

There have been a number of things about manwithpez over the years he's walked this rock. Here are some of the better ones. "You are the worst thing that's ever happened to me." Current Wife, Ex-Wife, last four girlfriends "My life would have been so much better if I had just not gotten pregnant." Mom "If you ever do anything like this to this family again, I will knock you out!" Dad (In the parking lot of the courthouse) "Mr. Barks...I'm really tired of seeing you here." Butler County KY circuit court judge "You are weak." Wife "You suck, you have no integrity, you are a piece of shit." One of my training instructors from basic "HEY, HEY, HEY! It's FAAAAAAT ALBERT!" My little brother "You lying bastard." My Stepmother "You're pretty stupid, aren't you?" My Stepfather(Whenever my Mother wasn't around) Surely, with these recommendations, manwithpez, is someone you would want to meet! Right? Also, I don't usually refer to myself in the third person so much...must be a third person kind of day.

I find out tonight if my friend has spare tickets to the Boston screening... One would be fantastic. Two would *really* impress my new girlfriend.

Does fan have to mean fanatic?
Wednesday, 04 May 2005 15:26:56

So it appears I have been thinking, (seems to be happening with an alarming frequency these days!) After reading Joss' recent post about over zealous fans threatening movie theatre owners and some subsequent replies, I've been thinking about what it means to be a fan. I opened my copy of 'Finding Serenity' after finishing reading it and in my excitement the first time round I must have missed the fact that it is dedicated 'to the many fans of Firefly'. It made me smile. That's great I thought, we're mentioned in the book and the trailer, look what we did I thought. But hang on! I havn't done anything, not anything that I would consider noteworthy leastways. Sure, I bought the DVD's and encourage others to do the same, I downloaded the trailer and I sure as hell plan on going to see the BDM more than once. But I didn't actually DO anything. I came to the party late, bringing with me nothing but an open mind and a willingness to love this show, looking for others who felt the same way. For the most part Browncoats have surprised me in ways I never thought possible. Their acceptence , humor, compassion, thoughtfulness and dedication is amazing. Of course some people feel the need to tarnish the Browncoat name, but don't get me started on the whole 'they-don't-deserve-to-be-within-spitting-distance-of-the-word-Browncoat' thing, I could rant for hours. I've never felt for another show the way I feel about Firefly. Of course I've liked other shows a lot, I may even have considered myself a fan, but really I was just an active observer. I watched Start Trek, The West Wing, Buffy and many others as and when they came on TV, I read the episode guides and occasionally bought a book or two but never anything more. Now I'm still here, four months after joining this site, writing a Blog and wondering if this is the first step along the road that's going to lead to conventions and calling in sick to go and see the movie. To be honest it's great. I never understood the devotion one can have to a non living object, until now. I wonder if I would still be here if there wasn't a movie to look forward to? I hope I would. I like the way fans of firefly challenge me to think about things in a new way, not just Firefly but real life too. Zoid, ManWithPez, TWG, (just three of the many whom I can remember giving me pause for thought in the past few days) I know nothing about anyone registered here except for what you show on this site. And what you show for the most part is intelligence and respect for others. I do know that you guys force me to see things in ways I might not usually. And althought some people might disagree, I believe that, that's a good thing. As almost everyone here has shown, fan does not have to mean fanatic. (Some on the outskirts may need to take note, but you know who you are!) Of course after the movie is released there will be more fans comeing to the fold. As a result things might need to be explained, threads might be repeated and it might get a little frustrating. But as Sam said to CJ in The West Wing "lets forget that you came late to the party and embrace the fact that you showed up at all." No quibbling over who is the better fan, it doesn't matter. Am I less important than someone who has been here from the beginning? Of course I'm going to say no, but I would hope that others would agree with me. We are all here (or at least we should be) to share a love of Firefly and subsequently Serenity. And share we do, share our fanfic, our Blogs, information, with the knowledge that what we post is likely going to be enjoyed by a variety of people from many areas of the globe. It gives you a wonderful feeling. (I'm not so sure about this Blog but if you've stuck it out this far you may as well go all the way!!!) So to end what began as a small thought and ended up as rather large one. I will graduate (hopfully) from the University of Kent in just over two months, I like to think Firefly helped. I wrote an essay on fans and fan culture using Firfly as an example. My thanks to Haken for a wonderful site an

Kentucky is not a foreign country
Wednesday, 04 May 2005 16:44:11

Someone started a thread today seeking out Browncoats in Kentucky. While I was rambling on in my signature (check the thread to see what I'm talking about), I was struck with the realization that I've reached a goal I subconsciously set for myself about 10 years ago - I've learned to speak without my western Kentucky accent. Now, understand that the western Kentucky accent is far different from the eastern Kentucky accent, and I'll debate anyone who says there is an overall, skeleton-key southern accent - it doesn't exist. Each region of each southern state has its own dialect. For example, parts of eastern Kentucky don't have chili dogs - they have "hot dogs with sauce." It's still chili, but they don't call it that when you eat it on a hot dog. Funky. Also understand that I'm not ashamed of my western Kentucky accent, and it has not been completely obliterated. When I'm drinking, sick or very tired, it creeps back into use. Otherwise, I've attained, as far as I'm concerned, an undiscernable accent. I did this (subconsciously, remember) because, even though I had no idea what I wanted to do with my professional life, I knew I'd end up doing something that required a great deal of verbal communication, and there are people around me that even I can't understand because of their thick twang. "Twang" is not the right word there, but it's the only one I know everyone will understand. I didn't want that to be a hurdle for me. So, rather than jumping over it, I kicked it down, broke it, jumped up and down on it, then put it in a bag and started carrying it with me. Quite the analogy, if I do say so myself. The bag stays closed most of the time - not really by choice, though. My fear through this transformation is that my family and friends in the area might think I was ashamed of my heritage. I'm not. I love it here. It's quiet, the food's great, and I'm within a comfortable drive of several major cities (Nashville, St. Louis, Chicago, etc.). And that has connected me to Firefly in a different way. None of them really use an accent, but the language is similar to how I have spoken. As for popular stereotypes about Kentuckians, I'll list how they apply, if at all, to me (I may repeat some of the ones in my signature on that thread): My wife is pregnant but hates walking around in bare feet. My house is not on wheels, and there's no place to add any to it. My two vehicles ARE on wheels and (knock on wood) have never been on blocks. They are also all one color. I have two dogs and one cat. That's it. I said earlier that I only know one person that has none of their original teeth - I actually know two. One is a white trash beehotch who decided at an early age not to brush her teeth - EVER. The other had an accident. I have all my teeth - and none are black. I ... hate ... tobacco. I do not own, nor have I ever owned, nor WILL I ever own a Confederate Flag. Not because I think it stands for slavery, but because most everyone else does, and I don't want to be lumped in with the hicks cruising the square in their rusted-out pickups. I do not have a genetic predisposition toward country music, mainly because what's being played on today's country stations is not country music - it's some kind of ice-pick-to-the-ears hybrid. I like Haggard, Jennings, Cash and both Hanks - that's about it. I do, however, love Bluegrass. I'm all about some banjo over here. Bug zappers are not that entertaining to me. I got tired of hearing "You might be a redneck if ...," "Here's your sign" and "Git er dun" after about a week of each. The rest of the stuff on the Blue Collar movies (not the show) is good - I just hate that other stuff. Regardless, I like Ron White better than any of the other three guys. And, as far as I'm concerned, if you want a pretty accurate cinematic description of the type of towns I've lived in, watch Doc Hollywood. Underrated flick. And I say "flick" alot because of Kevin Smith movies. Nootch.

More Convention Hijinks
Wednesday, 04 May 2005 17:06:26

By all rights, the blog should consist entirely of the words LIVERPOOL! LIVERPOOL! LIVERPOOL! LIVERPOOL! LIVERPOOL! LIVERPOOL! However, I can see how that would become tiresome after the first three hundred pages so instead, I thought I'd try and describe a few more bits with the aid of my pictures and the programme. In fact, I was so busy during the weekend that I've only just today had time to read the programme; that's how much stuff they had organised. Friday consisted of meeting a few random people and some familiar faces from the preview screening (congrats to everybody for not blowing any spoilers, I felt sure someone would reveal that River was made of chocolate and that Mal died in the third scene). There was also a chance to get in early for booking photo sessions and pick the cast photos to be signed (really nice ones actually and you didn't feel they were gouging you on price). Then there was the opening ceremony as the lovely and perpetually enthusiastic Clare Kramer introduced each member of the cast. This was also where most of us found out that Mark Sheppard was joining us and also for the slower ones (like me) that Ron had joined as an replacement guest. They all seemed pleased with their welcomes which were loud and sustained, particularly Alan and Summer. Nathan milked his, raising and lowering his hands for more and less appreciation from different sections of the crowd before insisting that he should come in again, which he did to even more applause. Then we all disappeared to get into costume for the Old West theme. There were plenty of cowboys, cowgirls, Chinese dresses and such like. There was a delightful girl whose name I didn't catch but I'm sure half the people here will know, who had a cavegirl outfit, chain mail and a rabbit costume that really caught the eye. The media stereotype of a sci-fi convention consisting of either 15 year old boys with glasses and 35 year old nerds was completely blown away. In fact there was no stereotype to be drawn, there was a great mix of young and old, male and female, British and from overseas. Some random bits from the panels: The questions ranged from the ones we all want to know "What is Book's past? Sequel? What's with the needle?" (although naturally they had no answer to give), to the bizarre to the ones that weren't questions at all, just overly long statements of what one particular fan thought. Ron was particularly happy talking about Barney Miller and fleshing out his character on that, you could tell he would have been just as devoted to making Book as three dimensional as possible over a 7 year run. Unfortunately Barney Miller wasn't really shown over here so we have no context. However on another question about technology Ron revealed that he'd gone to Best Buy (think Dixons) and asked for a typewriter and the staff laughed at him. (Moments later the video screens displayed a picture of Ron in front of a typewriter; those tech guys were ready for just about anything). Summer also said how she loved receiving fan mail, particularly hand written letters. I don't know what percentage of fans write to their stars but even if it's a very small one, when you have 20m people watching you, that soon adds up. If you wanted to pitch a script to her, a story where a shy girl opens up by expressing herself through dancing would be the way to go. Nathan is very comfortable with the Harrison Ford comparisons, even to the point of saying he'd like to star in a remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Morena is a big fan of actresses like Meryl Streep. Jewel takes a size 10 in some brand of shoes (presumably that's an American 10). Mark helped Summer with her accent (they were both so complimentary to each other about it: "Mark taught me everything", "I just gave the confidence that she was doing great") Summer loved performing when she was a little girl, including going out in the freezing cold wearing just a bikini and a feather boa to do a show for a non-existent audience. Jewel really enjoyed doing the Hallmark movie with Natasha Henstrid

I don't do normal, so here are the rules. # 1: That which is voted the most, is what I will write next. # II: Don't bother correcting the grammar and spelling mistakes that I will make. # C: If you read it, vote. # #: As long as you are willing to vote, I will be willing to write. Remember, humor is always a bonus.

Should Have Read It When You Had The Chance
Wednesday, 04 May 2005 20:10:22

Well, say goodbye to that flylog. I've never wanted to make anyone uncomfortable, or "creeped out" or negative in anyway, and so, its gone. That's the last time I tell anyone they're nice in so many words.

Surreality 3
Thursday, 05 May 2005 15:26:29

Because I can't explain everything I do or see: The toughened bunch of soldiers in the hydraulic shop just outside my door watches a lot of The Price is Right. A LOT!!! (And I mean toughened bunch of soldiers, this base is notorious for deploying people over and over again.) More than a few people have seen me use my PDA alot lately. Honestly, I'm either playing Monopoly on it, or reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Three people in the last week have asked me "So, what are you watching?" I realize that this is very strange behavior on my part, but I think about future photo oppurtunities and I practice from time to time...mostly in front of a urinal. Then, I remember what I'm doing and think "My GOD! I'm practicing smiling while I'm taking a piss! What's wrong with me?" I was walking past a mirror (not a big fan of mirrors...too honest)and stopped. While, in the past on a couple of occasions I've walked past mirrors, paused, and turned suddenly looking for my father, only to realize its just me, I never realized just how grey my hair has gotten lately. There's a lot of stress involved. The title of my last flylog "To ThatWeirdGirl" keeps staring at me, accusatorily, whenever I'm on the home page. People, can't you write flylogs any faster? I walk past my unmowed lawn everyday and think...I really should mow that. Then I go inside, take a shower and forget about it. My boss went on for ten minutes about a bird that attacked him this morning. I laughed and try to feign interest, until I couldn't take it anymore, and walked off in the middle of yet another sentence that began with "That feathered fucker..."

Psych'd for D*C
Thursday, 05 May 2005 16:17:51

I think D*C is short for DragonCon, if not this could be awkward. . . But seriously this will be my first Con ever, and a long awaited chance to meet Browncoats and the BDHs. If you're going to be there drop a comment because I really want to meet as many people as I can. Oh yeah Pez this should help clear the log.

Why 3 (The Trilogy)
Thursday, 05 May 2005 16:34:35

Why, oh dear God, why could I just keep my mouth shut last night? Why have I been carrying "Wonderfalls" around in my briefcase for a week, but haven't watched past the first disc yet? Why did my family not tell me that my grandmother had a stroke until a week later? (Don't worry, she's fine.) Why do I get so happy when "Caught Up" by Usher comes on the radio, but irritated when almost anything else by him comes on? Likewise Destiny's Child with "Catch My Breath"? Why were the people on the band bus so ill behaved? Why did the principal tell the members of the Academic Team that they were worse behaved than the Football Team? Why did Alyson Hannigan have to marry Alexis Denisof? I mean, I wasn't available, so I guess that clears that up... Why did my wife have to stack all that crap on my Grover kite? I mean, its just destroyed! Why haven't I been studying? Why did I write a why blog to clear the flylog cue?

Job done!
Thursday, 05 May 2005 16:57:33

Manwithpez, your wish is my command!

I'm free!
Thursday, 05 May 2005 19:52:43

I'm finally done with finals. I can't tell you how happy this makes me. I get two whole weeks to myself before summer school starts. I think I'll catch up on some reading. I have a whole slew of books on my "to read" list. I know all the guys reading this are going to roll their eyes, but I love me a good romantic suspense. Especially the supernatural ones. I'm currently into Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter novels. They are...bliss. I finally got to see the trailer for the BDM, btw. I was really beginning to feel out of touch with you guys. I was looking at the zazzle.com t-shirts for firefly and several of them had a "I aim to misbehave" theme. I had no clue what that was about. I've seen every episode at least four times. But then, I was getting ready to watch Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, when there it was. Nathan Fillion in all his Malcome Reynolds glory saying "I aim to misbehave." God, what a hottie! I can't wait to see the movie. You should have seen me sitting in the movie theatre, kicking my feet and grinning like a jackass (that's what I do when I'm really happy). People were staring. Anyway, I still don't understand the whole "you can't stop the signal thing." Somebody, please, feel free to explain it to me. I've been on an ugly planet call "Grad School" for the past year.

What kind of "Browncoat" are you?
Thursday, 05 May 2005 23:07:21

This was asked of me by my most recent convert. A fella who had to be coaxed quietly, I think because he was fearful of my former star trek tendencies. Then he found out I hadn't seen the trailer yet, while he observed that Book wasn't there and asked me if he was even in the movie. "What kind of "Browncoat" are you?" he says to me. It was like the unfortunate moment that he chose to call me a "you religious type." Should have seen him jump for that red button over my reaction on that one. Don't worry, he knows what I mean. I admit, I was fearful of watching the trailer. I'd heard it was rife with spoilers, and SoulOfSerenity even mentioned it may affect how he might write his fan fiction. My days of hiding my head in the sand are done. I've seen the trailer, and I have only one thing to say.... "I am to misbehave." Buckle up, browncoats. We're in for one HELL of a ride.

Where is Shepard Book?
Thursday, 05 May 2005 23:32:57

I have seen a few pics on the up and coming Serenity movie, and I have not seen a single pic of our dear Shepard? I wanted to know who he really was.

How did I guess...?
Friday, 06 May 2005 09:22:31

Bloody Blair... Another 4/5 years of him, unless he does a Thatcher and resigns part way through this term (yeah, and when he does, he'll give his job to Robert Kilroy-Silk...). This is a follow-up to my last blog, which pessimistically suggested that Blair would end up back in power no matter what -- as Mal would say, "It's a real burden being right so often." P.S. Sorry for the rant...

Spoiler Notices Please!
Friday, 06 May 2005 15:59:33

A serious plea, and I'm sure that it's been said before: please, please, please for those of you who have seen the BDM already (I hope that you all had a fabulous time!)--*please* put spoiler notices in your msg titles. I'm sure that I'm among the many who don't want even a whiff of spoil until September and don't want to stumble into one. Elsewise we're gonna have to go Tycho and Gabe on ya :naughty: Thanks!

Melbourne Shindig-May 6
Friday, 06 May 2005 16:16:37

I'm really looking forward to the next one...we MUST have more we stole helium balloons off these other tables...and a few of us had fun singing The ballad of Serenity...with extra high voices.. in other news... I have 7 more weeks of tafe left...and a few assignments coming up(yay...not)

FireFlyFans are better. Why?
Friday, 06 May 2005 16:38:47

Many people here will have witnessed the unpleasantness on the official Serenity boards. 'Fans' posting spoilers in plain view, in the header so it appears on the front page and even posting fake spoilers. What a bunch of jerks. I mean, seriously, even if you came out of the movie thinking that every second you spent watching it was an insult to your parents, show some respect to others. Thankfully this place seems to be unaffected. Let's hope it stays that way because I'd hate to see this very amiable forum descend into troll hell. In the words of Sir Alfred Hitchcock "It's only a moooovie." Oh, and avoid the official board like the plague until September 30th.

my new favourite Canadian...
Friday, 06 May 2005 17:52:17

...is Nathan Fillion. He's right up there with Nathan Wiley now - it must be the name. I didn't even realise he was Canadian until I read it in the booklet at the Serenity convention, and usually I'm pretty good at accents. It must have been his west coast thing - I was a Maritimer for a short while. A short while that has left me with constant cravings (see what I did there? Song title references - I believe in CanCon) for Tim Hortons coffee, an over-fondness for the Gilmore Girls (the set looks so east coast), some misplaced affection for hockey and occasional middling-to-strong urges to emigrate. I especially want to emigrate when I remember that the little town I am trapped in is on a par with Jaynestown: not only are they busy fete-ing bad guys, they are, quite literally, celebrating reivers (or reavers) over the next month. Still, at least we have alcohol almost as strong to help us get through it. I shouldn't complain though, as I did get out this last weekend, and spent some enjoyable time in a hotel near London Heathrow, where I was pleasantly surprised (though really I shouldn't have expected less) by how friendly all the cast and all the fans were at Starfury's Serenity, and particularly what great questions people asked in all the panel sessions. I was far too star-struck (by the crowd and by the presence of people who I've seen being heroes on screen) to ask anything. I did, however, dance like a loon. I fitted right in. It was great. I've never been to anything like that before. I've never seen dancing like that before either.

Okay, be warned...whiney mode is on here, but with reason. I have spent more time this semester (read, since Jan 25) sick than I have spent healthy! It's like I'll just start getting over one thing in time to get something new. Allergies are rampant. Actually got a full blown sinus infection last week. Experienced one of those salt water sinus rinses for the first time. Very strange watching water pour out one nostril when you know that you're forcing into the other one! Now I learn that there are lymph glands at the back of your head...behind the ears! Those have just swollen up, making turning my head kinda painful! Is this one of those special parts of Hell Book didn't tell us about? *sigh*

Saturday Morning Blues
Saturday, 07 May 2005 13:23:32

"I think you ought to know, I'm feeling very depressed." Actually, its true. I went to bed at about 9 oclock because I had a luggage load detail at 0400. What was suppposed to be a volunteer thing(but I was voluntold)for 1500 on Friday afternoon, turned into a 0400 detail, and they called me at 10oclock to tell me that I needed to report at 1600 on Saturday afternoon. As you can see, because my boss doesn't see working in an office as "real" work, my weekend is slowly being pulled to pieces for no good reason. You know, I thought if I got it all out, I'd feel better...I don't. So, I get up, and I try to watch "The Phantom of the Opera"...and, I'm enjoying it...Its not even really a good movie. But, I like it nonetheless. But, my children...They LOVE it. So, when it comes time for me to try to get them ready for me to take them out to lunch...they won't budge. Where's my wife in all this? National Scrapbooking Day...Whatever the hell that is. Of course, it is a source of constant amusement to me that (now she won't even say it) my daughter calls the film "The Fambly in the Operar" So, I'm going to clean my children up, clean myself up, head to Red Lobster, go buy some DVDS, and spend an exorbitant (Well, for us)sum of money and generally try to get along with each other as well as we can... In an edit, I relate this story...I said "Its time to go upstairs, do you want me to take Phantom upstairs so you can keep watching it." My daughter: "No...I want to watch something good." Nobody's pleased all the time, I guess...

Ok my Dad got laid off from work a few weeks ago and we went on unemployment of $309 a week. We also got evicted from a garage we were storing a lot of old truck parts and spent 3 weeks clearing this place out (hard dirty work). So money has been tight and the rent is due, time to cash in our “savings account” (Bottles and Cans). We got to Aldi’s first and get $7.50. We then head over to Tops hopeful that we will get our needed $8. Dad: Maybe we can take what’s left and get a small pizza Me: It will be one small ass pizza. Dad: Maybe a couple of slices? Me: Slice of pepperoni is more like it. So we get $4. Still $4 short of what we need. Off to Dollar General and we get $0.80. We come back home and grab all the bottles for Wegmans ($0.75 worth) and a bunch of Canadian quarters and head off to Wegmans. I turn in the bottles and head for the service desk and fork over the cash and $4 US in Quarters and $0.75 (the service charge) in Canadian Quarters and get my money order for Rent. I hope I don’t have to do this again.

Finally... some good news!

A somber Mother's Day
Monday, 09 May 2005 19:46:51

Actually, that title should probably be "A somber day after Mother's Day." Mother's Day has always meant something special to me, even if I never dwelled on it enough to completely understand what exactly that special meaning was. I've been blessed with a great family, and my mother ... well, let's just say I could be called "Mama's boy" and not be terribly offended. However, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this feeling, Mother's Day isn't just about each person's mother - not to me, at least. For me, it's about all the women in my family. Mom (obviously), my grandmothers, sisters, wife, aunts ... Aunt. Brings me to "somber." A little over a month ago, my great aunt (mom's aunt - close enough in age that they might as well have been sisters) passed away unexpectedly. Naturally, this year's Mother's Day was going to be a bit less (for lack of a better word) happy than others. Knowing where she is now, we are happy to an extent. Sad that she's no longer here with us. A few days before she passed, our family was gathered at my grandmother's house. I'm not artsy by any stretch, but I like to think of myself as a decent photographer. That night, my aunt was sitting at the dinner table with her granddaughter asleep in her lap. Both with eyes closed. As far as I'm concerned, the epitome of the loving grandmother was captured there. For Mother's Day, I made several copies of this photo for members of our family. Now that I've reflected upon all of this, I'm not sure I'll be able to look at the picture the same way again. I had a great love for my aunt - it hurts that she's not here with us. Hurts a bit more because the best picture I feel I've ever taken was the last one anyone ever took of her. Hurts plenty more because my first child is due within the next two months and he won't get to meet his great-great aunt. And it's Monday. I really didn't mean for this to turn into a "woe is me, pity me please" blog. I kinda hope it at least leads some of you to take stock of what you have and make sure you aren't taking things for granted. That's what I'm trying to do.

Quick Hi
Monday, 09 May 2005 20:27:36

I just noticed that a link to the BDM trailer has been put up here. I was so happy, I just watched it three times. I hope it hasn't been there very long. I'd feel pretty dumb, since I've been asking everyone how I could find it. Then to find it on my own beloved site. Well, it wouldn't be my best moment. But as far as I know, it was put there yesterday, so no one can tease my apparent cluelessness. Right? Right. Anyway, so I'm trying to decide whether or not I should go and volunteer in Peru next summer after I graduate. It is a Spanish Immersion program so I would come back bilingual. Wouldn't that be cool? I would love to go, if I could afford it, but every time I talk to my mom about it, she brings up a story about a guy who was a missionary down there. He got Krohn's (sp?) disease and died twenty years later. I know that doesn't make sense, but she's my mom and I love her anyway. So that's what is currently on my mind. To go, or not to go? That is the question. Honestly, I have no idea why I'm obsessing about it now. I don't even graduate for another year. It just occured to me that this blog was a little more than a "quick hi". Maybe I should change the title...Nah.

Time
Tuesday, 10 May 2005 05:05:54

Time is what evetually destroy's everything. But time is what you make it. It can be as slow as hell, torture even in the worst of circumstances, or it can fly by and you wouldn't even notice it. Lately, i have noticed that time is against me for alot of things. Returning books for cash, tickets in my own backyard, paper's being due, tv shows being missed, appoinments being missed. But I am detemrined to make time fly by for me, don't really feel the need to bash myself in over 4 months, hell I'll probably forget about it in that time, though I wont. So, theme parks, fast driving, caffine, and annoying my cats and mother will pass my time until i can get me some Serenity.

My Newest Convert Tool!
Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:52:44

Yesterday, I posted in the tag that I had ripped and formatted "Serenity" for my Dell Axim! I'm still so shocked that I got it to work...But, there's a side effect. Given the unusualness of the medium its being displayed in, I never thought anyone but me would be interested! Not true...apparently, having Firefly in an easy to carry, small, portable means of viewing is the perfect tool for making converts at work. I was just showing people what I had done on my handheld, and have had lots of chances to explain about Firefly and Serenity because they wanted to know what I was watching. Three people are going after work to buy the DVDs. (I suggested going to amazon or something, cause I can't find a copy around here. I suggested to one guy that he go rent it, and he said it looked like the kind of thing he would want to buy!) I still run into the problem of explaining Firefly...I can't do it succinctly, and only one person has ever stuck around long enough to hear a full description. But, I can get around that...Hey, if even the three who said they were going to get it shrinks to one, it was still time well spent, and I've got little, portable Firefly with me all the time! That's why my kung-fu is the best!!! Well, its moderately good... Okay, I suck at kung-fu, but now I can format Firefly for portables!!! YEAAAAAHHH BOYEEEEEEEE!!!

What's Old is New Again
Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:18:21

There was a time, back when I first joined up around here, when I was desperate for anything Firefly. You have to understand, I only had two episodes on VHS back in the day - "Train Job" and "Serenity." And like any devoted fan, I watched those two until I knew every line, every scene change and the exact moment when Mal drew his gun to shoot the Fed. I still have them - I'm saving them like talismans from the past. I came here looking for a little comfort, and found it in the arms of fellow fans. Sarahetc, Succatash, ManiacNumberOne, SergeantX, Veteran, and others. Folks that, for their own reasons, may not speak to each other these days. Here's not my point. There's a pre-screening of the movie coming to the Twin Cities, and silly me, I wasn't online to see the announcement in time to get tickets. Not that I could have made much good with them since it's on a class night. Still, the fact remains. There's more out there - I can feel it, and I can taste it, like the wind that comes right before a thunderstorm. Only I can't quite reach it. It's like when the TRS80 DVDs were first marketed on this site and I sent off $20 I didn't have at the time to get them. It's that same sense of desperation... for MORE. I'll have to wait now until September 30, and feed my desperation by watching the trailer in the Mac lab before class every Thursday night. It's good to feel this way again - like there's some manner of promise on the horizon.

Misunderstood words
Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:31:29

I'm talking about hearing a word/phrase and thinking something else when you hear it. For instance, the most popular ones I can think of: Jimi Hendrix: It's, "'Scuse me, while I kiss the sky" - not "kiss this guy." CCR: "There's a bad moon on the rise." Not, "There's a bathroom on the right." Lots of them from the world of music and are due to singers with a bit of a lisp or a very specific method of delivering words. A friend pointed out that the "kiss this guy" bit applies to the Firefly theme, as well. "You can't take this guy from me." Not sure why I thought of this, but here's the one that got me a long time ago: Prima donna: I was probably 9 or 10 when I first heard this word. I thought I was hearing "pre-Madonna." Madonna was the paragon of cool back then, and I just assumed someone was being told they were outdated or, more simply, uncool. Guess I hadn't heard much Italian at that point. -------- Let's call today "STEVEthePIRATE's Bad Blonde Joke Day!" Blonde #1: Whoa! Look at that dog with one eye! Blonde #2: (turning around while covering one eye) Where?

Joss's Episodes of "Roseanne"
Thursday, 12 May 2005 07:10:02

If you've got DirecTv, you'll notice sometimes the Director of episodic television will be included in the info... sometimes also the writer. For most sitcoms, this really isn't important information (is one 'Raymond' writer better than another?), but since I knew Joss wrote a couple 'Roseanne' eps back in the day, I always check the credits when I see it's on. Tonight I caught "Little Sister" (the IMDB leaves this one out, just as it incorrectly credits "Somebody Stole My Gal" to him), and a few weeks back I caught "Brain Dead Poet's Society." If you're a fan of Joss, you should really catch these episodes. I remember reading an interview with Joss where he said he did post-prod work on "The Getaway," and the movie evidently had 'an edge' to it, in the background, like, he wrote all the dialogue for people who weren't the main characters. I still haven't re-watched the movie since I found this out, but these episodes of "Roseanne" really did have that edge. Weird for a sitcom, you say? YOU BETCHA. Both "BDPS" and "Little Sister" weren't all about jokes. In the first, the entire episode just builds up to Darlene reading this dark, personal, highly-effecting poem about how she's the girl boys don't look at (cuz she's a tomboy). It was more a character piece than a sitcom! ... In the 2nd, there are TWO dark subplots, one where Jackie wants to be a cop, and Roseanne hates the idea because (as we find out at the end), it's easy to get blown away (the final 30 seconds of the ep are this long, dramatic pause... "Alright, Meter Maid is good, too)... earlier, Darlene had gone to hang out with Jackie, and Jackie's hella drunk... come to think of it, there was also the thing about Darlene tattling on Becky for looking at Dan's nudie magazines. Does this sound like a sitcom? Joss, you twisted bastard. "BDPS" was new to me, but I rembember "Little Sister" from when it was new. At the time I remember thinking it was a strange episode... both episodes DO have jokes, but none of it's setup/punchline. It's nearly all situational, much like the humor on 'Buffy/Firefly/Angel (and in "Speed" which Joss rewrote). Anyway. I know it seems weird to talk about "Roseanne" on the Firefly site, but if it's late at night and you get the chance to see a Whedon-written episode of ANYthing, do it. He's not usually credited for his movie work (Speed, The Getaway, X-Men 1), so grab it where you can. Here's hoping he avoids therapy for as long as possible. (qs)

Spoiler-Free: A 'Pure' Review of Serenity
Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:16:00

Before I was lucky enough to get a ticket to what is now considered the first round of pre-screenings in Boston, I vowed to remain completely and utterly spoiler-free until I was fortunate enough to see the BDM. This meant that I refused to watch the trailer and avoided all message boards that even made slight reference to anything which it contained. My reason for doing so was the hope that I would be completely surprised by any and all events/ideas/plot which occurred in the characters and story. I found that this strategy was ultimately quite rewarding and I write this review for similarly like-minded fans. What you should know about this film before going in is quite simple. First, do not expect just another episode of Firefly. One of my fears going in was that Serenity would have the same feel as all the Star Trek: The Next Generation movies; meaning a longer story with some special effects, but, for the most part, just a rehashed and slightly more interesting episode of the series. Such was not the case with Serenity. The BDM was just that...a Big Damn Movie. It far outshined anything that occurred in the series and clearly stood apart as a story in and of itself. Once you see it, you will understand why Joss Whedon has continuously stated that the movie is its own entity and not just a part of the series, which was one of his reasons for calling it 'Serenity' and not 'Firefly: The Movie'. Learn to accept this fact and you will be overjoyed when your time comes to see the film. Second, the movie is fairly 'darker' than the series. This should not prove too difficult a concept to grasp, assuming you have read the first point. The TV series, while a little violent and gritty, still maintained an overall sense of calm reassurance and hopeful optimism. The film, on the other hand, takes you for an emotional ride that will have you laughing at times, crying at others, and just plain shocked on more than one occasion. Overall, the story is quite enjoyable; some fans just need to be warned ahead of time to anticipate a different feel for the film than they did with the series. Ultimately, if you refrain from expecting the same light-hearted presentation you experienced over the course of the TV show, you will be more than amply rewarded with a real spectacle of a movie. Third, the movie might require too much back-story for non-fans of the series to completely appreciate. This is one of the more widespread concepts everyone seems to agree upon. It is quite difficult to accurately determine whether or not this is the case, however, simply because once you see an episode of Firefly, you become emotionally invested in the characters to a point where it is nearly impossible to purge your mind of their individual backgrounds and exploits. In addition, most of the people who are unfamiliar with the series, have seen the movie, and written reviews of it are of the correct mindset to appreciate sci-fi, let alone extremely well-written, acted, and filmed sci-fi, so their potentially positive reactions could be a reflection of this open-minded characteristic. My concerns center on the rest of the Serenity’s potential audience. The ones who would not have gone to see the original Star Wars had it not been for its unique marketing and, let's face it, amazing story and special effects. The reaction these masses will have to the BDM is a question everyone is asking and no one seems to have an answer for. Personally, I think that a majority of them will be purchasing the DVD series not long after they leave the theater, but will they be passing the word for others to see the film as well? I guess only time will tell. Until then, however, I plan on spreading my own opinions (in addition to my DVD's) to anyone who is interested, receptive, or just plain curious in seeing something new. I've got my ticket to the screening on the 26th and am bringing 3 Firefly 'virgins' along with me. I figure that while the future of the ‘verse may remain uncertain; we owe fans everywhere, both current and forthcoming, our full supp

New Recruiting Tool
Thursday, 12 May 2005 22:38:10

So a few weeks ago, the wedding tune of the Triumph settlers (from "Our Mrs. Reynolds") got stuck in my head, and I had no choice but to learn it on my fiddle. Then last weekend I went to the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival, where my band has a standing gig, and taught the tune to Beth the Whistleplayer. We had a great time playing the tune in one of the booths there. Anyway, she just IM'd me to say that the tune is stuck in her head, so she's going to go buy the DVD 'cuz the song won't leave her alone. I think I've found a new recruiting tool. :-)

Friday the thirteenth!
Friday, 13 May 2005 06:08:36

O.K, I may not be very worldly, and so I have no idea if you guys in America have the same days with your dates and whatnot (I know, I know, I'm horribly uninformed, I bow my head in shame) but anyway, here in Australia it's Friday the Thirteenth, and that means it's seance time! Childish, yes, waste of time, perhaps...but get enough beer into the equation and you can accomplish anything. The only problem is...who to call? There are only so many times you can call Ed Gein before it loses all scariness. May you all have a spooky day and an even weirder night! (Don't worry, Joss only says Halloween should be sacred, not Black Friday!)

What are your weaknesses?
Saturday, 14 May 2005 21:12:24

So last week I was doing one of my least favourite things: job interviews. I currently run my own IT support company which is good but there are certain jobs out there that I would like to have. The downside is that to get to them, I have to do job interviews where they ask irritating questions like the one in the title. "My weaknesses? Well, I'm just so great at everything, I'm too good to be true. No? Then I'm actually a hardcore heroin addict who burned down his last ten places of employment." Thankfully they didn't go with that question this time but there's got to be a better way of deciding if someone should work somewhere than interviews. Maybe it should be like dating, someone in the firm knows someone who knows someone who wants a job and therefore he gets it (for a trial period anyway). If you're interested, my main weakness is that I'm easily distracted from my goals by other peripheral things that come along like floating bits of... what are those things called? You know, the white floating bits in the air that you see, often dandelion seeds or something similar. There should be a generic name for them. My other weakness is that I find practically everything in the universe amusing and try to persuade others onto my way of thinking. And Cadbury's Cream Eggs. And sausages. And girls in shiny outfits. And combinations of those last three.

officially going mad...
Sunday, 15 May 2005 01:01:47

no, make that gone mad. how you ask? well it all started with a dream, a dream that Bakersfield (my home town) got an advanced screening and that my whole family went. It was weird cause I actually saw part of the movie in the dream...something about a train depot and the BDHs busting through a wall. Now I will be really freaked if that is in the movie. Then, there was another "can't stop the signal" and I paid real close attention, so close that in the middle of work I bought 4 tickets to the Tempe screening, forgetting of course that that wonderfully blessed city is 6 hours drive away and my truck could never make it. So I have attempted to con a couple of friends into taking off work with me and driving for me. And it looks like we will be coming, seeing, and going (we cant take work off the next day). Finally, I got my first tattoo today...the lower character for serenity (jing4), smaller and on my hip. All I have to say is this had better be a good movie. Yeah, I can rationalize it that it is for peace cause peace is a wonderful thing, but I would be in denial that it was not partially for our BDM. You may now agree with me...I have gone mad, stark raving mad, but I think it is a good mad.

I just spend a half hour trapped in a bathroom.
Sunday, 15 May 2005 06:07:29

Ahh the bathroom, the greatest room in the house right? WRONG my bathroom almost became my coffin! Ok maybe that’s an exaggeration- it almost became my bedroom for a night. I went to the “Captain’s Head” (As I call it) to take a wiz. I shut the door when I realize what happened earlier today, the doorknob is broken and doesn’t turn! I hear the ‘click’ of the frozen bolt snapping in to place on the door jam. I try and turn the knob but it just spins around. I push up and down on the doorknob I rock it back and forth. Nothing! I think, ok time to calm down, what tools do I have on hand… a comb, a bar of soap, the box the soap came in, an electric razor, a bottle of shampoo, and a bunch of coat hangers. Crap where’s a skill saw or hammer when you need one! I wedge open the metal plate of the doorknob with the box the soap came in and use the comb and coat hanger to push it open. No good. I wrap a towel around the door know and hit it with the bottle of soap. Still nothing. Damn I guess I’m not MacGyver after all. I’m getting desperate. I start thinking about how I could use the shower curtain as a blanket and the towels as pillows. I go all out on the knob I twist it a dozen times in a counter-clockwise direction and the door opens!! [Mel Gibson]FRRRRREEEEEEDOM!!!![/Mel Gibson] Next I go to my room and grab a screwdriver then take off that damn doorknob for good. ... oh and after all that I still have to take a wiz...

What makes Firefly so different?
Sunday, 15 May 2005 17:10:02

Yes, that was a question that was asked. The person who asked me said "What makes Firefly different from any other space show out ther". My answers. 1. No Aliens - As much as I loved Star Trek: TNG, Deep Space Nice, and Enterprise. I am glad to see Firefly doesnt have all those Aliens. It's a nice change from the other shows that feature alien life. 2. Cowboys in Space - Dont ask me why but I have allways loved those old Westerns that they show on AMC or TCM. 3. Clothing - Nobody wears the same thing every single day. (Example: Star Trek:TNG) 4. Chinese - Love it! I thing this is one of the best things on the series. All in all, Joss created a great show (Buffy and Angel included)! I really wish it could of been on longer and I am looking forward to seeing Serenity and will buy it on DVD when it comes out as well! My question for you, What do you think makes Firefly Different from the rest?

troublemaker t-shirt?
Sunday, 15 May 2005 18:46:45

Anyone know where I could get a replica of the "troublemaker" t-shirt that Jayne wears? (it's the one with the handgun image on it) Would like to get it before the 5/26 showing.

For my first trick...
Sunday, 15 May 2005 23:21:37

... I'm going to bore you all with how my day went... Hmmm... what I did I get up to today... yesterday... whatever! Well lets see... I lay awake this morning, tossing and turning because I got sunstroke the day before. (should have listened when parents said put suntan lotion on... and not laughed in their faces) So after several pints of water, I eventually got to sleep, only to be woken up at 9 due to the effects several pints of water had on me... Went back to bed, planning on lying there for a wee while, but instead fell asleep again and dreampt that I was kept as a slave, used as a whore, my hair was chopped off and when I was rescued I was pregnant, but I lost the baby due to my hair being too short... or some such nonsense... the ending was fuzzy 'cause my dad woke me up ten minutes before we were supposed to be leaving. The result of which was me forgetting to put a belt on, spending the rest of the day pulling up my trousers and wearing odd socks - I swear it's the new in thing... everyone's doing it! Drove all the way down to Troon (an hour), was bored to death at my grandparents house for two hours then drove all the way home again (an hour and a half due to "Sunday" drivers from England - not that there's anything wrong with English people... just Sunday drivers...) *sighs* Then went into town to see A at King Tuts, (apparently I'd known for weeks, but first I'd heard of it was two hours before doors opening) Anyway... gig was good... supporting band was good... got hug off supporting band's (Instruction) lead singer (no idea what his name was) got plectrum off Mark out of A (even has his name on it and A) and lead singer of Instruction and autograph (didn't even know the band or the dude...) and am now sat waiting for my ears to stop ringing so I can go to bed... which is why you've had to endure this painful recall of my day... .... They're still ringing... and I've run out of things to say... except I'm hungry... and I want to write fanfiction... hmmm... *wanders off to find food, hoping to find my muse in the fridge as well*

The Voyage Home
Monday, 16 May 2005 13:45:38

I made a trip to Tennessee this last weekend to see my father, stepmother, brothers, nieces and nephew. To say it was strange is to say...well, it was strange. Its a six hour trip. My children were unusually well behaved in the car, which is to say, they slept most of the way. My wife was busy this week, so it was just me and the kids...the first time I've undertook something that was just me and them. We had a blast! We all bought lightsabers (fwash-ights, per my two year old son) and a ton of candy! I brought my wife some souvenirs...Fun was had by all. But, as you know, manwithpez can not remain happy for long, and this was no exception. Strong thunderstorms took place both on the way there, and back again. So, a six hour trip took about 7 and half hours. My kids and I got along very well, for the most part...There was a little dissension on the way home. My daughter became convinced that she only wanted to hear music that was "girly" (her word, not mine), meaning, she only wanted to hear female singers. I heard my son laughing in the back seat, turned around just as he started crying to see him vomit EVERYWHERE!(The only thing I had to clean it with...my Spider-Man pillow case...so long old friend!) I did get to listen to several old radio dramas that I had been meaning to. Suspense rocks, for anyone out there who wants something fun and interesting to listen to, by the way. My father found interesting ways to look down on me, but that's normal. Nothing new there. My brother (The one just younger than me, with three kids...the 28 year old) was nice without being condescending for once. And, hey...took up residence in a Cracker Barrel...Fun, fun fun. Unfortunately, my wife and I got into a huge argument (we're still fighting, actually) not long after I got home. I had to ...she said somethin' bout my momma! I did get to see Troy this weekend, and I loved it! Why didn't I go see this earlier! I'm off to buy that over lunch today! I saw King Arthur...it was ooookay...I didn't really enjoy it that much. Just once, I would like to have a vacation that actually feels like a vacation.

Use lines or words from the show in real life? I found my self using Gorram (Doesnt that mean Damn or somthing in Chinese) the other day. I was frustrated with the computer at work and I said to myself "Stupid Gorram Computer"

I just thought it was important that it be said...Star Wars...Episode Three...TWO MORE DAYS! Thank you for your attention, bye bye now.

Why 4 (Because I'm not in Trouble)
Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:56:50

Because I can't explain it all... Why did I spend the better part of three days sitting and reading PVP? Why can't my dad say "That's cool" whenever I show him a new gadget instead of something like "That's heavy", or "I'm sure it eats batteries." or "Mine's better."? Why can't my three of my five brothers move out of the house? I mean, one of them's married with two children, and has never lived outside of this house. Why does my stepmother (whom I dearly love) assume she is right about EVERYTHING? Why have I been drawing again? Why did I get rid of that blog? I loved that thing! Why can't I be happy that my wife's going home to see her family instead of wondering when the obligatory "I want a divorce" call is coming? Why do I feel the overwhelming urge to drink myself into a stupor on the back porch at twilight with the radio on? (Admit it, you think it sounds good too.) Why do I keep writing these things?

A question for Hell's Kitten . . .
Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:50:16

Hey there Hell's Kitten. Would it be possible for you to send me a file of the Jayne-T-shirt (troublemaker/gun) image? I want to make a shirt for myself for the May 26th screening. My email is mparsec7@yahoo.com You rock.

Firefly DVD: Good remedy for .... anything.
Wednesday, 18 May 2005 02:21:14

Despite all the chatter about the trailer and screenings and such, I've not taken the DVD's out to watch in a very long time. Till tonight. W/ out the boring details, work has been horrific lately. Up early, home late... been sleeping poorly and eating worse. My brain is mush, I'm so tired. Take 2 episodes, drink plenty of liquids and get to bed early. Thanks guys, I needed that. Ahhh...

It was inevitable...
Wednesday, 18 May 2005 02:38:16

Well, I suppose it was bound to happen. I should never have converted her in the first place. That's right, my sister has joined the site. Under the name CallmeSerenity no less. She stole my idea! So what does it mean for the site? It means we're all doomed. She's evil. I mean, the other day she mailed me the tape she had recorded Lost on because I forgot to record it. And she's always sending me all these e-mails, and calling me all the time. (unlike a certain other sister) She must be a demon. I need to steal some of her toenail clippings and see if they grow. She probably didn't even get that reference. Actually, she probably did, but she's evil. EVIL! Oh, and she smells. If you're reading this Serenity, I don't like you.

Wednesday, 18 May 2005 03:50:06

No, not me. My sister is...maybe! Well actually I'm pretty sure she is, but it could be as soon as tonight. I saw her earlier today, and I guess she took all that "You look ready to hatch" talk to heart, because they just called to say they're going to the Hospital! So, I guess we'll see.

I'm an idiot: an internet lesson learned
Wednesday, 18 May 2005 04:43:09

So I tried registering for a Scifi.com account, 'cause I'm bored and wanted to talk about Galactica. But it refused to work. Turns out I used my new email address, forgetting that yahoo changes the ending depending on what country you're in. So my password and everything went to someone else. Wouldn't be a problem except I'm one of those people who used the password for more than one thing. So now I'm rushing around trying to change them all. Just in case whoever got my info was in a hacking mood. I had a feeling I should have picked a different alias. Now I feel all... exposed and paranoid. The email was vaguely Serenity-ish so maybe a good Browncoat will get it and delete it. Not use it. I can hope. Or if they are malicious, I can wait for them to register it and then I can delete it since I have the password too! Ha! Or not. Either way I've learned my lesson.

I feel the need to defend myself
Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:59:22

Those of you who know my brother, Ath, probably know that he's a pretty nice guy...most of the time. But read his most recent blog-is he not mean? And to me, his older sister! The one who used to hold his hand to make sure he got across the street safely! The one who made sure his shoes were double-knotted! I am hurt :disappointed: Okay, not really, because this is how we are to each other all the time. And he really is a very nice guy. And good looking too (I'm going for guilt here.) But I do want to state for the record that not only did I ask his permission before choosing my alias, I was on the phone WITH HIM when I picked it! Stealing indeed! And I do smell-like lemon verbena. Sweet and refreshing.

What I Think As Opposed To What I Say #208: ManWithPez Takes Manhattan
Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:39:01

At Work: Boss: Did you go workout today? Me: (None of your goddamn business, you bald tub of lard!) Yes sir. At Home: WifeWithPez: Could you clean out the van for me? Me: (I would rather have my testicles hammered flat with a wooden mallet) I would love to, sweetie. At Work Again: Big Boss: What's that movie called? Revenge of the Sith? What the hell's a Sith? Me: (Don't ask me to fulfill your need to feel younger by explaining pop culture to you, Philistine!) A bad Jedi. With My Daughter: DaughterLikeMother: I said NO! You know what no means, don't you? Me: (Yes, it will be my reponse to the question posed by you later 'Daddy, will you let me live?') Go to you room. With My Son: SonWithPez: I want a dink, Datty! Me: (Yeah, I could use a few stiff drinks right now, too.) Go ask your mother. At Work Again: StarWarsObsessedSSgt: Don't you think its cool? I got one of those hundred dollar lightsabers. It's really cool! Me: (I spent 30$ on my copy of Firefly, and I'm absolutely certain that I'll get more fun out of that than you will with a 100$ lightsaber replica) Firefly is better than Star Wars. StarWarsObsessedSSgt: What! Blasphemy! Me: (You've never even seen it! How dare you say anything about my beloved Serenity, you uninformed miscreant!) Joss Whedon is my master now. At Home Again: WifeWithPez: I'm so fat! Me: (She really isn't. I wish she wouldn't go on so, I love the way she looks, and I think she's totally hot. I know she won't accept this from me, but I wish she would.) "..." I run for the hills...I'm not saying a damn thing. Like I want to get into this fight! At Dairy Queen: TotalStrangerWoman: (Who is in fact, touching my daughter's hair) What a lovely little girl. Me: (So, this is the true price of taking your kids to get ice cream. Random strangers paw my children while the lump behind the counter manages to screw up three dipped cones. My wife wonders why I don't ever want to leave the house) Yes, she is. (Stop touching my little girl!) Kids, get in the car. Muahahahaha!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Mine truly is an evil laugh.

My coin keeps flipping
Wednesday, 18 May 2005 19:17:29

Lately, I've been viewing my life as if it were a coin. One side has something on it, and the other side holds something completely different. On one side - let's call it the "heads" side - I've got a job I'm not completely thrilled with where I get one sick day a year (already used) and no vacation until I've been here a year (November). There's potential for me to get fed up and quit or be fired before I get the chance. I may have another job lined up, but the employer could go a different way entirely. On the other side - the "tails" side, which will have all the good stuff since "tails never fails" - I've got a great family, loving wife with our first baby about a month from arriving and very little to complain about outside of my current work predicament. All would be well if my coin remained "tails" up. But God keep flipping it. That's His way - and that's the way it's supposed to be. My only fear is, if my work situation weasels its way over to the "tails" side, am I going to lose something good to the "heads" side? Or is there a chance the "heads" side can empty itself over to "tails"?

ImEarly draws his new sword and prepares for battle.
Wednesday, 18 May 2005 20:15:26

I don't do normal, so here are the rules. As long as you are willing to vote, I will be willing to write. Don't bother correcting the grammar and spelling mistakes that I will make. Remember, humor is always a bonus. ImEarly looked down to the sheath he was recently given. The hilt of the sword held within its walls called to him. “I will stay and fight.” He said to the lead horseman, beads of sweat began to build upon his forehead as the horseman who would stay and fight slowly guided their horses around to face the enemy whose cloud of dust specked the horizon, threatening torment, suffering and death. ImEarly looked closely at his new companions, most looked too old for battle. They looked like poor farmers, vagabonds…peasants. What were these men doing out here, their armor was dented and misshapen, their eyes dull. The men guided their horses around ImEarly and Dagon. The lead horseman glanced around to them. “Stay behind us at all times, and don’t enter the battle unless you have no choice.” He turned and resumed his position at the head of the formation. “What was that all about?” ImEarly asked. With a slight frown, Dagon replied. “Odeon is the Marshall of our region. He’s just rewarding our youthful courage with an opportunity to flee unseen.” Dagon shuffled a little in his saddle, and smiled. “I have no intention to run.” ImEarly wasn’t sure about himself. Dagon guided his horse behind the others and ImEarly maneuvered beside him. With a raised arm, Marshall Odeon controlled the masses, he swiftly threw it forward and they immediately charged the looming shadow of death. The sun was close to setting, and the enemy they approached grew closer and ever more enigmatic. The pacing horsemen were silent, all the horses but ImEarly’s grew apprehensive. They slowed their pace and it seemed as if they were positioning themselves closer to ImEarly. The horsemen fought to keep them in formation, but they would not obey their masters, they were somehow drawn to ImEarly. It took the enemy little time to grow close, the horses neighed and the horsemen drew their swords. A small salvo of arrows pierced the night and fell one of the horses, it threw its rider several feet before it, but ImEarly never saw him hit the ground. They quickened the horses again, determined to take the fight to them. “Ready, men!” Shouted Odeon. ImEarly obeyed the Marshall’s order and drew his own sword. His pulse quickened and his breathing was measured. He knew that if he wasn’t careful that he would die here, on an unknown field, in an unknown world. He didn’t like that he was alone and confused… but that was forgotten. ImEarly had seen the enemy. He had read of them in books, seen them on the television and in movies. He’d seen them in magazines. He had one on his desktop. A dragon, no dragons, slightly larger then the horses they rode upon, their nostrils aflame, their confidence infallible. Four sharp talons attached to two hooves below massive legs, their armored flesh as crimson as the dusk surrounding them. Atop the creatures were men in heavy armor, large bows upon their backs, murder in their eyes. A war cry issued from the horsemen and the charge turned into a suicidal flood of horse and man flesh. The two rushing hordes collided and the blood began to fall, Odeon immediately attacked the neck of the closest wyvern. It collapsed as his blade bit deep into its neck. “There is no armor there!” Dagon shouted. He then guided his horse deeper into the fray, unafraid and ready to do battle. ImEarly sat there silent and watchful. The horsemen before him were heavily engaged in the battle and outnumbered the enemy three to one. The wyvern riders didn’t attempt to stop the horsemen’s attacks, and they fell one and two at a time. ImEarly inspected one of the wyvern riders more closely and could see that he carried no sword. The bows on their backs appeared to be their only weapons. All at once, as if a hidden signal had passed between the wyverns, they began their attack. Mighty bellows

Fan Fiction and Creating New Characters
Wednesday, 18 May 2005 23:54:21

Hi! I have a question, first I had posted my Fan Fiction on a FireflyCommnunity on livejournal and got totally bashed all becasue I decided to create a character which last I checked is not against the law, writers do it all the time. Example: Buffy's first Season was just Willow, Buffy, Giles, Cordy, Xander and after Season 2 more people came on the show as the show went on also Angel was the same way. I dont hear anyone calling OZ or Fred a mary sue. What is the problem with creating a character? I am not going to stop writing just because some gorram prick doesnt like that I wrote in a new character. I intend on continuing cause I like to write and its my imagination.

A Fallen Browncoat
Thursday, 19 May 2005 00:57:46

Fellow Browncoats, we've lost one of our own. Jordan Selvage, a Toledo Browncoat, was killed yesterday in a car accident. He was 28. I'd only met Jordan a few times, when he drove down to Cincinnati for our shindigs. That he was willing to make a four-hour drive to hang out with his fellow Browncoats speaks to his dedication. Jordan was one of those rare folks that I connected with immediately. We shared many things in common. We knew all the same obscure movie and TV quotes. We both drank Guinness and loved The Simpsons and Strong Bad and, of course, Firefly. We had the same sense of humor. I don't know that Jordan hung out here much. I think he did, but I don't know his username. But he was a Browncoat, and that's all that needs saying, in my book. And now, suddenly, he's gone. The victim of a 20-year-old woman running a red light. I miss him.

May 19th
Thursday, 19 May 2005 03:23:40

Well Folks, it's May 19th, and if you have to ask what I've been doing today then you must be living in a very secluded cave somewhere off-planet. Far, far off-planet. No, that's not far enough. Keep guessing. Anyways, I have seven words for ya'll: WOWSERS. Exclaimation point. Exclaimation point...Exclaimation point. (And to all you Terry Pratchett fans out there, my use of multiple exclaimation points is not a sign of my insanity.) Truthfully, I can't say more than this because it's been little more than twenty minutes since I walked out of the theatre and I haven't quite got my head around it yet. I just saw the last installment. LAST INSTALLMENT. I guess I should go lie down or somethin'. More on this thread later.

Day 1
Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:57:55

This is my first day aboard Gratitude. He's a fine ship, and yes I say he because he told me to. As I walk on the not so shiny new plates I feel full of elation. This is a good ship, and just by sitting in it I know it will take me great places. I don't swear to write in this log every day, maybe I never will again. But for all who come across this, know Captain Symon Silver is there for all who are in need of help. I came up with the name Gratitude...well, actually I don't know how I did. It just dawned upon me, as I tried to think of some great name for a ship. I sat there, it was the first name I thought up, then I tried to think of more but it just kept coming back. So here he is. I'm not going to look for my crew. I know eventually it will come to me. I will accept any passerby that just wishes a ride, but I hope that sometime soon I will find loyal followers-- wait, not followers, but partners. This ship will run on a family, not a dictator. Though my word is the rule, I must speak with my crew first. Well, I hear the tug of destiny on my ear. --Respectfully, the captain of Gratitude -Symon

Jordan: If you can't run, you crawl, and if you can't do that...
Friday, 20 May 2005 06:15:52

...well, we know the rest. And this past Wednesday I got the news that one of the best fans I ever had the pleasure of making an acquaintence with, had lost his life in a tragic car accident where his vehicle was hit by someone running a red light. It's just not fair. On far too many levels, it is not fair. He was special, and I won't soon forget him. Keep flyin', Jordan. They may have taken you out to the Black, but you will always be home in our hearts and minds. I hope you've found your Serenity. You are one of a kind. If anyone out there is reading this, please keep Jordan Selvage in your thoughts and prayers. Also, if you know Jordan, I am looking for picutres/stories of him for some special memory projects I am working on. Please email me if you can help. ...the 'Verse lost a good man in a bad way this week...and I wish I had the power to undo it. TCM

I Don't Make This Stuff Up
Friday, 20 May 2005 12:52:57

I just got off the phone with my wife. She's in Kentucky right now with our children, staying at her grandmother's house. I automatically know its her on the phone, because I can barely hear her when she calls. There is too much child-generated background noise but it to be anyone else. We have a small conversation, in which I can hear my son in the background. Here's a short excerpt of that talk: 'lilmanwithpez: Up MOMMY! wifewithpez: You can sit here with me, but I'm not getting up just so you can sit down. I'm 23, you're 2. 'lilmanwithpez: Up! UP! UP!!! wifewithpez: No! You want to talk to Daddy? 'lilmanwithpez: Datty! And then, of course, she hands the phone to him where I get to hear mostly mouth breathing. I swear to God, he's swallowed the damn reciever. So, I try to have a little fun. manwithpez: Are you still a redhead? 'lilmanwithpez: No! manwithpez: Touch your hair and tell me. 'lilmanwithpez: That's Mommy's! wifewithpez: (background) Ow! What are you doing! And, then I hear my son laugh, and his voice fades. I can tell he's set the phone down and has run off. wifewithpez: Are you there? manwithpez: Yes. Did he touch his hair? wifewithpez: No! He just poked me in the boob and said "That's mommy's!" (suspiciously) Did you tell him to do that? manwithpez: Why would I do that? I get a kick out of that little boy. I can tell he's going to be a man after my own heart.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children release date confirmed
Friday, 20 May 2005 14:56:44

It's official - around September the 13th/14th, FFVII:AC will be unleashed upon Japan and the USA. Square-Enix have stated that they're aiming for a UK release date by the end of the year. In the meantime, here's one of the latest trailers, shown at the beginning of E3 (there's been a longer one shown at E3, but SE hasn't let the cameras near it).

Day 2
Friday, 20 May 2005 17:57:47

Not much has happened yet. But I am beginning to love this ship more and more. The general musk of it just makes my taste buds tingle. Haven't really found a crew yet, 'cept some rowdy guy that approached me on the market saying he was a hell of a pilot. Then he said he had once ridden a giant ripe piece of fruit through space. I don't think I really want that kind of stuff on my ship. I definately don't some psychotic running us into all sorts of astroids. Well I'll keep looking. Remember, I will accept anybody with exceptional talent in engineering, piloting, medical assistance, cooking, and guarding my backside from any unwanted guns being pointed at it. Well, that's it for now, just come knockin' if you want a ride.

Working On A List Of Vid Sites
Saturday, 21 May 2005 08:26:24

I'm working on a list of Firefly Vid Websites to help all of us share the joy. If you want it let me know and I'll email it to you, or if enough people want it, I'll post it here. There are about 94+ vids located on the sites I've found. Please see my Live Journal:

Day 3
Saturday, 21 May 2005 20:39:51

I think I have found a cook. She says her name is Serenity, but given all circumstance you can see why I might feel weird calling her that. I sent her a messege telling her she was welcome aboard. I still need a pilot and engineer. I can get by without all the others, but I hope some one will contact me if they want aboard. This is a good ship. I've been looking around on how to fix up a few little faults all around. But when I got him he was practically new. I hope I'll be able to get a full crew within the week, 'cause I can't really take off without'em. I've gotten a few books for the long voyages, and I just realized just how boring it could get without a large crew. Gratitude is a big ship, and I think he's begging to be filled up with all sorts of people and cargo. See ya --Captain of Gratitude -Symon

Firefly musings
Saturday, 21 May 2005 21:51:25

Hello all. I've been lurking here for a while and continue to be impressed with the people posting here. I haven't seen the usual idiotic messages in all caps exclaiming that KAYLEE TOTALLY ROCKS! (which she does) Nice bunch of people here, by my reckoning. Anyway, I was just thinking.... 1) I notice that there is an unusually high proportion of female fans compared to most sci-fi shows. What is it about Firefly that appeals to the women folk? Firefly does tend to focus more on character and relationships than your average Star Trek episode. Or, perhaps it's the Captain's tight pants. 2) I made my first recuit this week. She was a tough one. She doesn't watch tv and is much more interested in mountain biking and snowboarding than space westerns. I set up a projector and a laptop at work and let her watch the first two episodes over a series of lunch breaks. Once she had watched those two episodes she could decide if she wanted to watch more. She wasn't completely sold on the series after those two (Serenity and Train Job), but expressed an interest in Simon and River, so I showed the 'Safe' episode next. She then said she didn't like Jayne much, so we ran 'Jaynestown' next. Other than her unfortunate habit of calling our canibalistic friends from the edge of the galaxy 'Reefers' ( "Dude, I totally got the munchies. Can we do the flesh eating first this time?") she's become an avid fan of the show. In what order do you recommend new viewers watch the Firefly episodes? Do you stay with the order of the DVDs, or do you hit them with the best episodes first? 3) While I accept the possibility that the BDM will have sound in space ( doesn't really bother me), there is something poetical about watching the ships move about in silence. 4) Does anyone else's heart skip a beat when they hear fiddle music now? Anyway that's enough for my first post. Later.

WHAT?!?!!?!
Saturday, 21 May 2005 21:54:22

My friends, it has come to my attention that the Alliance in our beloved show are wearing used armor and such from Starship Troopers! I don't know if this is true, but it does have a similar appearance. Hope You'll Help me with this one!

Writers Block
Sunday, 22 May 2005 02:44:06

How do you deal? The story I want to write is there but for some odd reason doesnt want to come out or wont come out the way I want. I did watch the show today to get my creative juices flowing and it helped a little bit. I know it will come to me. I should probably keep a note book for ideas and stuff. Oh I think I heard on the TV earlier the add for Firefly on Sci Fi channel, It sounded like they said Firefly an July 22.

Firefly party on Sep 29th
Sunday, 22 May 2005 17:57:12

A few friends and I are going to have a before the premiere party. We plan on ordering pizza and watching Firefly all day long and then leaving for the movie theater the next day and hope to be the first in line to get tickets or we might go to AMC theaters website and buy tickets from there. Does anyone else have any plans to do anything like this?

Day 4
Sunday, 22 May 2005 18:34:18

I think I'm getting more people on board. We've got, Serena the cook, and Zoot the medic. And a cute little Zoot spawnling. She hasn't told me the little'un's name yet. And it seems I have found a fighter of sorts, but I haven't learned his name yet. And as I said to them, in technical sense I am missing the necessities of a crew (no pilot, no engineer). But once again as I said, chocolate isn't necissary, but it is good. On another note, in response to something one of the new members said: no one is lowly. Every one of your opinions count to me. I will come to my crew for the most important situations I have to make. Let me lay it out like this. Though I am the captain and I have the final word if the situation is dire, I do care what my crew members think. Sometimes I may lay it on a majority rules basis. Sometimes I might just drown your opions to keep everyone safe. If one member is being irrational and against everyone's opinion it is my decission whether to throw them in their corridors or hear them out. But never ever say that you feel your opinion doesn't count on my ship. Unless you feel that the ship should be painted completely pink, then I will toss you into space to be breakfast for a star. Just kidding, but seriously, no pink. --Captain of Gratitude -Symon

I just don't know what to do with myself
Sunday, 22 May 2005 23:46:12

Well blow me down with a feather! I can't actually believe it. I've reached the end of the line. Everything acedemic I have ever done has been leading up to this very moment. Yes ladies and gentlefolk I have finally finished my life as a student. There is one major problem. What do I do now? I had my final exam last Monday and I feel like I havn't had a spare moment since. What with work, a dance competition and the annual university music festival I've been on the go continuously. I'm not complaining though. It has been lovely to do something exclusivly for me for a change without worrying about the next deadline and how much revision I should be doing. So today I slept for 10 hours! (boy did I need to) When I finally woke up I figured that as it was a lovely day I would do some spring cleaning. In the space of an hour I broke my printer, the internet stopped working and the door fell off the washing machine. Some days you just shouldn't get out of bed right?! On the plus side I now have a lovely tidy house. Today was the first day I have had a chance to even think about the fact that I need to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. The trouble is I don't have a clue. I'm very much of the view that everything will be alright in the end so I'm trying not to let this sudden realisation worry me too much. I'm looking forward to whatever life has in store for me as I embark in to the big wide world. Beside with trips to the zoo, the beach and the Summer Ball coming up in the next few weeks I know I'll always be a kid at heart! Take care Alison (BA)

Kind of good-bye

Dear anyone, I'm not going to be checking forums and messeges as often now because the power on my laptop is broken. I will still try to get on as much as I can on other computers, but if you care or are trying to contact me I will probably be checking my email more. Sorry, see ya later. -Symon

Day 5
Monday, 23 May 2005 01:45:01

Well, looks like I got access to one of those computermabobs. I've learnt the more appropriate name for my medic. Charley Parkhurst, and her younglin's name is Belle. Hopefully that little spawn monster doesn't go rampagin' on tearing everything down. Now I just need to learn the name of my little gunshooter. But I still need a pilot and an engineer. Those are very necissary assets. But if I have to wait another week I'm going to have to go pick up "Ship Flying for Dummies". Also, if you plan on being on my ship you must accept that you have to stay on for at least a year. Omce a little action gets going on these logs might become a little more exciting. Oh yes, if you want to make your captain extra happy, give him a batch of muffins, they are very good. Ahem, sorry. --Captain of Gratitude -Symon

Why the cat cries...
Monday, 23 May 2005 02:58:47

OK, posting this because I'm really bored and highly annoyed by my cat. I have 2. One talks ALOT, the other not so much, but today the lil ho (and I say that in a nice way) just wouldnt shutup. From 8am this morning to..well now, she wouldnt shutup. I dont speak cat-inese, my spoken english isnt even all that good, too much Buffy my words are all twisty and discombobulated like. I don't even think that's a real word there. I ramble, I know but I continue. The point is I REALLY don't thinks are supposed to "talk" this much. She's gone now because Grey's Anatomony is on, I think she's squimish on the blood thing. Well, Family Guy is on and I start summer classes tomorow (damn college) and I need an early start... even if my class doesnt start till 3:30 in the afternoon. Oh ya, I'm lovin it:naughty:

As it was MEANT to be seen..... HURRAH!
Monday, 23 May 2005 13:56:23

So, for the first time ever I saw Firefly on TV!! I only became obsessive when given the DVD, but now it has returned to the Sci-Fi channel here in the UK and so, all excited and such, I thought I’d sample the “real thing” on TV at 5 p.m. last night. The Episode turned out to be the Train Job, but I haven’t yet worked out whether this was the first episode they've shown (a la FOX) or whether they’re showing them in the DVD order (if anyone knows, would ya tell me?). Anyhoo… watching it on TV turned out to be an eye-opener for the following reasons: 1. I have never EVER heard the voice over explanation for the Firefly world at the start before – kinda cool and yet ever so slightly diminishing… 2. I now understand the necessity of the “fade to suede” moments that seemed faintly superfluous on the DVD... 3. I may be wrong but am sure on the DVD episodes, just before the final credits, the word “firefly” lights up momentarily in gold – like the flash you get behind your eyes when you look at something very bright in the dark. On the TV version, this flashing gold symbol turned out to be a picture of a firefly-class spaceship etched in gold. How cool is that!! On the whole, there is something so retro and so gorram romantic about watching the show as it was first aired – advert breaks and all – I’m lovin’ it!! (eek! how I hate to quote corporate America – Ronald McD be damned!)

A Baltimore Icon Dies...
Monday, 23 May 2005 14:12:34

Robert Edward Lopez, long time (28 years!) newsman for 98Rock in Baltimore died yesterday from a yearlong battle with lung cancer. He was the driving force behind every morning show (14 of them) since he began with 98Rock only 1 year into the station's existence. Most recently, he was one third of the morning show Kirk, Mark, and Lopez. I admired him. He was a stout liberal who never strayed from his beliefs. I am a republican, but I had the biggest respect for him. I would make sure to have my radio on 97.9 FM every morning at the top of every hour from 5:30-10 just to hear Lopez do the news, and then at 9:30 to hear his entertainment report. It was the highlight of my day. He left behind his wife Jean "Trixie" Lopez, his daughter Leandra, and an entire city of friends and fans. He will be sorely missed, and impossible to replace. I know I'll miss hearing him every morning. So I'll just sign off here with the sign off that I always loved to hear: "From the battlements of the Hearst Broadcast Castle, I'm Lopez, on 98 Rock." We'll miss you, Lopez.

Star Wars episode III Review(spoilers)
Monday, 23 May 2005 15:12:43

WARNING THE FOLLOWING BLOG HAS SPOILERS (do not read until you see the movie) AND IS WRITTEN BY A BIG NERD WHO THINKS HE'S COOL BUT SINCE HE IS WRITING A BLOG ON A KIDDIE SCI-FI FILM HE OBVIOUSLY IS NOT.DO NOT BE TOO HARSH ON HIM,FOR YOU SEE HE IS DYING..........WHENEVER,TECHNICALLY WE ALL ARE GONNA DIE,WHEN? WELL THAT'S WHAT SUCKS ABOUT DEATH.WHAT WAS I SAYING? AH,YES--ENJOY THE GEEK BLOG,MAY THE BLOG BE WITH YOU---SEE? TOTAL NERD WITH BAD PUNS. Memo to Lucas- Damn you.Why do you continue to hurt me? I feel like I am in an abusive relationship.Everytime you hurt me,I make excuses for you and forgive you once more. This isn't about the special editions(continue to tweak them if you wish--I don't care anymore)this isn't about the first 2 films, this is about the last film.Did you hear me?LAST FILM.You see, everytime I saw the other films,I was dissapointed, but I would always follow it up with"Well the next one has to get better..."well what am I gonna say now?Alright enough whining let me start the review the first hour----boooorrrring! The space battles--been there done that, you know they are gonna survive there is no danger and it's just not that fun,I kept asking where my x-box controller was. My biggest beef, was how fast he turned to the dark side. It all happened in a matter of 24 hours. He was about to turn in the emperor to the Jedi council one moment and 24 hours later, he's mowing down Jedi children and killing dozens. Lucas was heading in the right direction- the relationship between him and the council, the feeling of betrayal, the isolation, etc. but because he ran out of time it required this gigantic leap at the end... a leap that simply didn't make sense or at least was understandable. Oh! and wookies? WASTED! USELESS! POINTLESS! I didn't as much hate the dialogue between Padme and Anikan,(I swear to god if she calls him "annie" one more time i'm going to throw a copy of the "annie" dvd at Natilie Portmans' head)as much as i was disappointed with its content. It didn't progress their relationship. It didn't change or evolve toward something- toward anything. Her feelings remained the same the whole way thru- she was in love with him, believed him and supported him right up until the end. I wanted their conversations to continue to break down as the movie progressed. I wanted his desperation to save their love to be part of the reason he turned, but it simply wasn't there. None of that happened. a huge missed opportunity. Yoda is completely wrong- again (He is clearly angry in the movie and anger leads to the dark side). The limp diminutive character (size does not matter) that is introduced in 'empire' is long lost in these movies. The hopping, jumping and quick flashy Yoda simply betrays all of what Yoda was teaching Luke in the swamps. whatever happened to the idea that less is more. Just because Yoda flips the structure of his sentences, doesn't make it more insightful. "turning toward the dark side, Anikan is" is still "Anikan is turning toward the dark side"- that's what we get from the Jedi supreme master? Lucas seems to use this structure to make up for the lack of writing ability, and he uses this trick way too often- it becomes very annoying. Remember, some of yoda's best lines aren't structured like that: "that is why you fail" Get rid of the ultra silly chase sequences. phantom had the overly long and suspenseless pod race and the silly underwater chase, clones had the conveyor frogger belt sequence and the jason and Argonauts gladiator fight, and this movie had the most of all three- the opening battle sequence with the distracting robot insects, the lizard chase sequence with grievous (that was painful), most of all the annoying escape from grievous' ship culminating in the nonsensical landing of his ship. It seemed this movie had either huge action sequences of quiet moments between two characters-nothing in between. The light saber duels should be less complicated, not more. The simple duel between Luke and vader in empire was easy to follow

The Tables Have Turned
Monday, 23 May 2005 16:56:18

Admit it...some of you out there have been waiting for me to post a new blog... What? This is my flylog, and if I can't imagine an audience here, where can I? So, on to the title. As I stated in the last "What I Think, Opposed To What I Say" blog, we went to Dairy Queen. I usually go to the big BR, but, sometimes you just want a damn Blizzard! My daughter asked for a dipped cone, and, like any four year old, her attention was anywhere but where it should have been. Licking the cone fast enough to keep it from dripping everywhere. It started to become a real mess, so I took it from her, and quickly began lapping, shaping it into a managable, malleable ice cream mountain before handing it back. It was just as I was handing it back that I noticed my wife, staring at me. With her mouth open. We've been together for some time now, so I know what that look means. It means one of two things...She's aroused, or, she's horrified. I immediately become self-conscious. "What?" She then looks embarassed and goes about with what she's eating... "Nothing." Riiiiiight! I arch my eyebrow, and give her the come hither...just in time for my son to drop a spoonful of ice cream into his own hair. For a second there, I felt like a Sex God. But, there's always my son, waiting for me to get over my delusions, and get whatever he was eating out of his hair.

Aw Man! A Double Post Forces Me To Write Another Blog!
Monday, 23 May 2005 16:57:15

So, let's do "Minor Observances/Petty Annoyances" I just purchased Jedi Academy so I could play it online. I enjoy playing online, but the people who have been there awhile don't like me being there. So, I find the leader, and immediately kill him. He then spends the next half hour hunting me down everywhere I go and killing me very, very quickly. Annoyance Level: 7 I clean the house...and I mean really, really clean the house. Mopping, dusting, the tub, the whole bit, just so my wife won't have to worry about it when she gets back from Kentucky. The first thing she says to me: "What do you want?" Annoyance Level: 5 I buy some cookies on my way home. Get three out, a go to the fridge. The milk expired yesterday (I've been deathly ill from bad milk before) Annoyance Level: 4 I'm trying to watch Ghost World, and I'm enjoying it, but I keep getting distracted. And the film kinda bounces around from time to time. I miss three minutes, and then I don't know what the hells going on. Annoyance Level: 5 (With myself...Since when can I not sit down and watch really horrible movies, let alone one that seemed as compelling as this one did.) Two guys in the smokepit are talking Episode 3. The guy I'm talking to really wants to see it, but hasn't yet. I ask the other two to watch out for spoilers. They look at me, nod, and go right back to what they were saying...giving away quite a bit. Annoyance Level: 9 (I really, really hate this behavior in people)

Singing
Monday, 23 May 2005 22:06:37

I'm sure most of you have seen the Fifth Element (heck, I'm fifteen and I've already seen it!), so I want to ask you about the beautiful singing performance done in that movie. now that you have it in your head, take out the singers body and replace it with Morena Bacarin's (did I spell her name right?). Now hear me out. Doesn't that beautiful voice fit? And I'm NOT TALKING ABOUT THE WIERD REMIX SCENE! I'm actually talking about the opera part. This sounded a bit wierd, but I just wanted to say that that voice would fit her. Sorry if it's a bit wierd...

Tuesday, 24 May 2005 21:41:16

I thought it would be a good idea to write this blog(since no one is looking at my other one) because of the argravating people we know. I really hope the day I see Serenity will not be the same day as someone at my school saying that they have been a Firefly fan forever. I HA....DISLIKE how people say that they are things that they are not. If they are new to it, JUST SAY SO! Don't take away the glory of those who have steadfastedly stood by Firefly for the many months and years. It's just plain mean!

I want to know if I will be seeing any fellow Idahoans at Edwards 21 in Boise when Serenity comes out the 30th. Please let me know, Idaho!

The "Call Me_" family vacation
Wednesday, 25 May 2005 03:48:40

Tomorrow I leave to visit my younger sister and her husband in Florida. I haven't seen Goober (as I affectionately call little sis) since New Year's, so I'm pretty excited. Serenity, aka, CallMeSerenity, will be there which makes it even better. Yes, I really DO love her dearly; we always act mean to each other, it's our way of showing affection. (Happy Serenity?! I admitted it.) The only downside is that I doubt I'll find time to get online very often. A crushing blow to the site, I know, but I'm sure you guys will manage.

TDD
Wednesday, 25 May 2005 07:00:15

As many of you know, we are housing a stray dog named Clyde. I have renamed him TDD. It stands for That Damn Dog. He came into our home as a puppy. We'd found a pregnant dog, and adopted her. (Don't worry, she's fixed now.) Anyway, Clyde is one of her puppies. We had found homes for all of them, but Clyde's family decided they didn't want him anymore and sent him to the humaine society. They were going to put him to sleep, so my soft hearted husband brought him home. (I said no, but I must have no say in this household.) Anyway, we're trying to find a home for him, and I put up with it. TDD has chewed up over $100 worth of shoes. He fights with our outher dog (his mother) all the time. He barks all night long. Most of all, he's a reminder that my husband doesn't listen to me. Another thing most of you know is that I'm expecting twins soon. There is no way I can keep this dog in my house. I gave my husband a date, and I said if he hasn't found a home for TDD by that date I'm taking him back to the humane society. Well, don't tell my husband, (like you all talk to him on a regular basis,) but I can't take TDD to be killed. It is 2 am here, and I can't sleep, becasue I don't know what I'm going to do. I had every intention of taking him to the humane society, dropping him off, and not looking back. But TDD crawled in my lap yesterday and fell asleep. WHAT IN THE HELL AM I GOING TO DO?!!!!!! We can't keep him. Noone else wants him. I can't sleep, and now the damn thing thinks I'm his mommy. If you think of anyone who would like a dog, have them check out his website. www.directfreight.com/clyde He's fixed and potty trained. Oh, and please please please fix your pets. You don't want someone else going through this crap.

Serenity Finds Serenity in the Woods
Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:29:08

I don't like where I live. It's this neighborhood full of manufactured houses off a clogged road in a small town. There are no sidewalks, hardly any trees, and I can't walk or ride my bike anywhere, because there's nothing close enough (and I'd get dead. SC drivers are mean to bike riders.) But there is one good thing about my neighborhood. At the end of my street there is a small patch of woods that borders two other neighborhoods. It's probably a 1/2 mile square (well, more trapazoidal, but whatever) of woods. There are several paths that run through it, most of which I traverse on a daily basis. I love to get up in the morning and walk through the woods before I go to work. I love knowing I'm the first person there that day. I love watching the small winged insects rise at my feet as I wake them up from their beds of pine straw. I feel momentarily guilty for disturbing the work of the unfortunate spiders who spent the night building webs across my path. I love the clean smell, especially after a rain. So many creatures live there: rabbits, lizards, birds, squirrels, snakes, small boys with paintguns. I've even seen deer tracks (though I've never seen the deer.) The woods are my sanctuary when I'm having a bad day or overwhelmed by life. I think better when I'm around trees. My thoughts fall into pace with my footsteps. I often think of Mal (to tie this all into Firefly) and how he said that the woods were the only place he could see a clear path. I love my little patch of woods.

Dinosaur Comics
Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:51:13

I started a thread about this earlier, but I've been so hooked on these that I want to make sure I'm not the only one that's aware of them. Of course, they've been around for a couple years, so I'm probably just WAY behind everyone else ... again. Anyway, www.qwantz.com - great fun. As for the one that I've adopted as my own personal six-frame autobiographical comic strip:

About those 10 things I wanted...
Wednesday, 25 May 2005 22:55:24

But probably wasn't going to get (from the 4th of April):
1. Christopher Eccleston to issue a statement saying he realised he's made an enormous mistake and is signing up for two more seasons of Doctor Who. 2. Tony Blair to announce the election as being May 5th and every person in Parliament replies "Well, duh!" 3. The new Pope to take the name 'Pope George Ringo' 4. Confident of the new movie's success, Universal announces that work is already underway on Serenity's sequel. 5. Liverpool win the Champions League. 6. The BBC announce the release of the complete 'A Bit of Fry & Laurie' onto DVD. 7. A cure for glaucoma for dogs is released onto the mass market. 8. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is reasonably good. 9. I wake up with Michael Bolton's singing voice (I will use it only for good). 10. Well, there's a £33m rollover jackpot on the Euromillions lottery...
Number 8 seems to be true (I'm seeing it tomorrow). Incredibly number 5 came true tonight. I mean really incredibly. I mean, the odds must have been staggeringly against it at half time. 3-0 down against one of the best teams in Europe. You just don't score three goals against them. But we did. And then we triumphed. Unbelieveable, it really is. So, two wishes have come true, four have passed (number 2 only sort of came true) so let's see how the other four do. That's not bad really though, making 10 improbable wishes and getting two of them. Basically, I just wanted to celebrate Liverpool's victory tonight. Note for non-football followers (that's football as in the game where you mostly use your foot on the ball, see how that works?) - tonight was the Champions League final, the biggest competition for clubs in the world. Winning this means millions upon millions for my team and they also get to keep the trophy, having won it now five times.

Boston screening tomorrow!!

Hope to see some of y'all there. I'll be the guy in the Blue Sun t-shirt and yarmulke that looks kinda like a Yin-Yang.

Day 8....9?
Thursday, 26 May 2005 22:43:43

At least I think it's day eight. Today's...Thursday?! Maybe day 9? Well anyways, I haven't heard from my "crew" for a while. Anyone want to join? Maybe I'll just have to go psychotic and make up some crew members in my head. Or just explode. I'm going a little crazy from boredom. I'm checking up on becoming a pilot, because I don't think I'll be flying otherwise. I don't have much else to say. Someone, anyone? --Something of Something... -Symon

Preview Envy
Friday, 27 May 2005 13:22:25

Yeah...I'm seeing a lot of that going around here and on the official board. I'm not suffering from it, really. I mean, it would be nice to get to see some of the cast. (Twin Cities, I'm looking in your direction...Bastards!) But, I'm just not hyped about seeing the movie before its officially finished. I'm sure its great and all, but I want all the music in place, I want all the effects done. I want all the cuts to be over with. I want what I expect from Firefly...A highly polished, filthy, wuzzled up future with guns, swords, lasers, etc! And no F____n' Jar-Jars!!!

Afterglow...
Friday, 27 May 2005 14:34:51

Wow - what a night! I've been at work for almost an hour now, and I can't stop writing about it. Not to worry, for them as couldn't go to the pre-screening last night, this isn't about the movie itself - awesome as it was. Nope, this is ALL about the browncoats who were there. Yes folks, I did indeed ditch my Art History class Thursday night and made it to the pre-screening. A ticket fell into my lap at the last minute, and when something like that happens, it's definitely worth risking a slight dip in the old GPA. Happily, I didn't have to manufacture a story, or relay my "lame" reason for leaving. I told my instructor I had to leave at 9:00P and that was it. Don't ask, don't tell - he didn't, and neither did I. WarMaster - without whom I wouldn't even have been there. Who knew that co-hosting a party at MarsCon and facilitating sales for Todd Coss, artist GoH, would lead up to this. I broke a rule, see, and took artwork out of the art show. I have it written in my own rules - no artwork leaves the show once it's in. But this was the Firefly party, and the artwork was limited edition prints of the Firefly-theme badge art for the con. Not only that, but Todd was there to sign the prints. Doug bought number 1 of 5, which he reminded me of before the movie began. Thinking back on it now, I remember being handed the money in quick-draw fashion before I had a chance to finish my announcement at the party. Thanks again Doug *HUG* Knibblet gave me a huge hug the second I walked in the door, even before she gave me my ticket. We got munchies and went in and no sooner had we sat down than she began singing "Hero of Canton" I love that - that I had someone else who not only sings well sitting next to me (cuz I don't sing by my own self) but also understands WHY. MoonMagic humored us both - but she was pretty bouncy giddy in her seat at times too. In fact, every time I looked at her, she was smiling, either in bemusement as Knibb struck up into "Hero of Canton" again or sheer delight. Sara Hell's Kitten - Oh my gosh, how cute were you in your Kaylee garb? And how cool to bring Serenity *STUFF* for Doug. She knows how to treat a fella right, I'm thinking. Damon and DaCute1 came all the way from St. Cloud, and caught my attention by waving at me furiously from the top row of the theatre. DaCute1 lived up to her name, darling as always in her River costume a la "Safe" and I admit, I missed Damon's Jayne hat. I haven't seen them since MarsCon, so it was nice to go up and say "hey" after the show. Ericka got to sit next to the truly shuai Simon look a like. I knew I heard someone calling my name when I went out to find the necessary. At the time I thought it was DaCute1, but there she was - the forthright beauty who single-handedly handed out more fliers to the sweeks at the EpIII midnight show than all the fellas combined. Travis, you are a true mercenary my friend - I mean that in a good way - savvier by far than the average Browncoat. Where there's a Firefly event in town, you're going to be there, and that's all there is to it. And, saving the best for last; Ron Glass. He really is better looking in person, but also warm, charming, and an absolute joy. Turns out he has acting roots in Minneapolis, having performed at the Guthrie Theatre. I wonder what he'll think when he sees it during his visit today. Before the movie began, he stood up and said, "I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it for you." At the Episode III screening, I was a lone browncoat in a sea of sweeks. At the Serenity pre-screening, it felt like I was among family. It just doesn't get any better than that.

made me laugh, made me cry, it moved me, bob...
Friday, 27 May 2005 17:07:19

well, ok, it didn't exactly make me cry, at least not the tears kind. yes, I am talking about those lovely little special screenings that happened last night. Don't worry...this is a spoiler free blog, unless you count giddiness mixed with a strong dose of heart wrenching as spoilers, but then we are dealing with Joss here...the master of laughter and angst, so of course serenity is going to have good doses of both. (how he does it without making me hate him is beyond me. jkr could stand to take some lessons from him.) but back to the movie. yeah. shiny. what else can I say, except that I am looking forward to Sept. 30 even more. To say anything else would just be tedious and nit-picky, and since it is a rough cut I wont. But definitely worth the 14 hour trip (I went to the Phoenix one...I live in Orange County.) And great to see so many Browncoats...Long live the Independance! ;alkdsfj;alskdjf;asldkfjas;dlkj...that is how excited I am...but must go back to work now before the trash cans overflow. ;alkdsjf;alskdjfs;ldfkja;lfkj

Day 10
Friday, 27 May 2005 18:36:23

I'm just going for 10, well, because I'm too lazy to prove it wrong. Anyone that wants to correct me I'll try to fix the logs up accordingly. Well, it seems as if I will have to go to piloting school. Or whatever you do to become a ship pilot. Does anyone know? I can just see my last log:..."Symon Silver set off with his crew on their maiden voyage yesterday. But unfortunately his horrible piloting skills ran them into an astroid destroying their engine. Then, unexpectedly, Reavers flew a long way from their native territory to dock with his ship and kill his already dying crew. Anyone that wants to take what's left on their ship, well go right ahead..." Ha...haha...mmmmmmaaaybe we should find a pilot, and soon, before I get the stupid idea and put the thing in reverse and crash it into an Alliance cruiser. Eeeehhhhhhhhhhhhh. Someone? Please? Help? It would be nice if one of my already-crew members would like to tell me that they were secretly a pilot all along and was just pulling my leg. Leigh?(This is the one crew member, I didn't know his name. Well, now I do) Charlie? Well, I'm sure all of them are comfy cozey all in their corridors. Oh, and by the way Charlie, there should be some money around here somewhere for you to go into town and get some proper medical supplies. Now I'm going to try to figure out these gorram controls... --Your desprate captain -Symon

My dad's logs
Friday, 27 May 2005 19:49:35

Dear Lady Sophia, Last night we got word of the place the deal for the package was going down. It’s some deserted town down planet-side. Raf thinks it may be a set-up of sorts, trying to get us down there defenseless. But the rest of the crew is intent on going down. I’m taking Raf, Flora, Franz, and Joel. Well, not much else to say. Rein cooked up a mighty good meal this morning. I’m gonna cut over to the log-recorder planet-side. “Well, looks pretty deserted to me,” Franz said, shuffling his feet around in the dirt. “It’s almost nightfall. I want to get to the meeting place with no trouble and just get this over with. So all of you keep your traps shut, and just in case Raf is right…well, have your guns at the ready. Everyone shiny? Okay, let’s go,” I led the crew down a dirt road that led into town. “Wow, it’s getting kinda creepy, you know? The wind’s blowing through the grass. I think I just heard something growling,” Raf began complaining. As you know, he does that all the time. “Bi zuie,” Joel said. “Chu ni duh, you shut up. This is getting really freaky,” Raf wouldn’t shut up. We had reached the town. There were lights on in a few of the houses. “This place doesn’t look deserted Franz. Cap, I think this is a trap.” “Shut the fuck up,” Joel said sternly. “You know what, I think we should go back right now,” Raf was jittering. “You know what else? No one cares what you think. If you don’t want to be here, walk back to the ship!” Franz spoke up in defense of the information he had found for the pick-up. “Shut the fuck up,” Joel moaned under his breath. “Negative. No one’s going back to the ship,” I said. “You know what Franz, you’re crazy. You drag us into a ‘deserted’ town that has houses with lights in their windows and then say this isn’t a trap?!” Raf was shouting. “Gwon nee ju jee du shu, I am working off of information that was given to me! I can’t control whether people lie to me or not!” Franz walked ahead, ending the conversation with Raf. “Fei hua, bullshit, bullshit! You’re probably trying to get the whole damned crew killed! Gorram traitor!” Raf shouted after Franz. Joel turned around and picked up Raf by the collar of his shirt. “Shut the fuck up!” Joel yelled in his face. I turned around and smashed the back of my gun into Joel’s back. He quickly dropped Raf. “All of you shut the fuck up! Ye Soo, I told you all to keep your traps shut! With this behavior I don’t think I’m going to be paying any of you. Flora here is the only one that will get her box! The rest of you will get to sit in your corridors and think about what you’ve done, unless…all of you shut up!” I turned back and continued walking. They all stopped talking except for a grunt Raf made to Joel. “Cap, are you sure we shouldn’t turn back? This town seems less and less deserted every minute,” Raf complained again. “Franz, how secure is your information? I’m beginning to think this little hwoon dahn is right,” I said pausing and turning around to the rest of the group. “I don’t know it was nearly anonymous. I figured it was just the guy we were working for,” Franz said quietly, thinking. “Wow, really smart. Look, we got a genius here! Just accepts anonymous information and thinks it might not be a trap! Really smart Franz!” Raf threw his hands up and sat on the ground as Joel turned around. “You know what Raf, you can shut the fuck up!” Joel shouted pointing a finger at him. “Wow, really, none of you are helping at all!” Franz yelled at the both of them. “You’re the one trying to get us all killed. I’m not trying to get us killed. Shut the fuck, you shut up, liar, shut the, Jesus! You gorram f-you-fwerg-esg-…” the recorder got fuzzy here with all their shouting. “All right, everyone sit there asses on the dirt and shut their mouths!” I turned around and they all sat there with their guns in their laps. “Flora, you can get up. Thank you for following orders like a good crew member. Raf, don’t you make faces at her! I think now Flora should get all the boxes and all of you

Hello...I'm a Newbie
Friday, 27 May 2005 21:20:05

A friend of mine introduced me to Firefly recently and I loved it and then I went on the net and tried to find anything I could about the show and I found this place and decided to join up. I can't wait to see the movie.

I'm starting over!
Saturday, 28 May 2005 05:04:43

I started writing my second fic and it sounded just as corny as my first fic! So I am going to toss those two and start over and make it much better and less corny.

Day...12...no 11
Monday, 30 May 2005 07:40:07

Damn...I gone and done it again. I think I forgot to log yesterday. This is getting tough with the absence of words. Maybe I should go return this ship. No, well I just need a heads up from everyone saying we can fly. Found a pilot, his name's Nic. I went through my dad's old stuff, I think I can fly this thing. But we ain't going far, we still need someone to check up on the engine and make sure everything is runnin ok. An engineer is imperitive, or we might as well all put plastic bags over our heads and say good-bye to the little twinkly stars. I am itchin' to get flyin', it's been over a week and so far I can't see us flying at all. Well, I just did the math (finally) and I think it's actually day 11. I'm keeping it there, no matter what. I'm waiting till day 16 to throw myself off a cliff. I really hope Gratitude isn't left all alone. Maybe he'd be better off with a more effective captain who can actually find a full crew. I don't know, I just don't know any more. I'm tired now, I need some rest... --Your captain -Symon

The second essay of Symon Silver
Monday, 30 May 2005 08:09:50

In the matter of 11 days all my views have changed. It's felt like a month, in that time I wrote an essay, which really meant nothing. I've come up with these logs, which seem to be going nowhere. I grabbed onto a series and lost it, and after 11 days I think I don't care anymore. A nervous heat is washing over my body, and I don't even know why. I never realized I could change myself so much in just one week. I don't know if I'll write in these logs again, unless some divine calling commands me. I don't think I want to do much without some divine calling. Like I just said...I don't know. I think I've been more dedicated to the series in a matter of days than I have been to any book I've ever tried to write, or any story I’ve witnessed. It’s interesting, because nothing in the world has done that for me. I’ve always felt bad when something ended, but not as horribly stricken as when Firefly did. I think, and don’t go thinking I’m crazy, but there is something in the series or in the characters that is extremely important to the wellbeing of my life. I feel like I want to write another long essay, but it doesn’t take too many words to express what I’m going through, even if you don’t understand. I’ve walked along the different forums, and went on a crazed rampage acting as if I’m the only one that mattered. Maybe this is some sort of crisis in my own life, and doesn’t regard Firefly at all. I don’t really know, and I don’t know what to do about it. I think something needs to be said. I thank you Joss. I know I am not the only one that has thanked you. It’s been 11 days, but I feel like I have been a part of this before I even knew. I wish I could have been a part of this when it began. I’m late, but I know that everything that happens…that there’s a purpose for it all. There’s no reason why, and I’m figuring I’ll probably get the same response to this as everything else, but I feel like I must write this. I must write something that makes sense. But for the few eyes that read this, know that I understand you care and I’m there for you. I don’t know why or how Joss got so many people to follow the story of some rag-tag crew. I don’t know why or how they touched me, but they did. Like they took a fishing hook and struck it through my heart. No one knows me, no one really cares who I might be, and I’m ok with that. It would make me feel good if only one person in the world read this, and didn’t even understand it. Hell, I don’t even understand it. I guess that’s it. I never knew that so much could change in just 11 days. But I guess that’s the way the world spins, the way the stars move. Do they move? I’m sure they do, destined to be sucked into some black hole, or just die in a furious explosion. Any who, I don’t have anything else to say, I’m looking forward to Serenity. And to every soul out there, each flying their own ship with their own special crews, well…keep flying. Don’t let any one voice, any million voices, take down your ship. Every ship should fly. ---Once again, and maybe for the last time -Symon

My thoughts on Spoilers... ahem *SPOILERS*
Monday, 30 May 2005 18:29:32

Spoilers happen. You know it, and I know it. What I find ironical and somewhat funny are the spoiler-a-phobics who are seeing spoilers in the most innocent statements. I used the words "River displayed certain physical skills" after I saw the trailer. Somebody (I forget who) took that to mean River had become Ninja River. Thing is, we already know she's got physical skills - the way she stood on the railings while eavesdropping in OiS, and the "trick shooting" in WS - and you have to admit, I did choose my words carefully, trying very hard to refer to something without giving anything away, and got tromped on anyhow. I can't help someone else's vivid imagination or assumptions about WHAT exactly River was being turned into, now can I? Then there are those who go into a thread that has *SPOILERS* in the title and then come down on the originator for writing a spoiler. I mean *hello* Suffice to say, this is a "not-able-to-please-all-the-people-all-the-time" scenario. One of the new Minnesota Browncoats came to the bonfire last Friday, and when conversation turned to the screening, did she run away screaming "SPOILERS! SPOILERS!" Nope. She stayed and let us talk - and believe me, we TALKED. Her philosophy is that if she really wanted to remain spoiler free, it's her own responsibility. As has been stated here, however, that's not always an easy thing to do. Thing is, we all want to talk about what's happened with the screenings - how long has it been since the DVDs came out, leaving us with very little new Fireflyage to talk about? I don't know - someone here will. Also, spoiler-phobes should also keep in mind that what we're seeing now are PRE-SCREENINGS, meant to elicit a certain response from a certain set of viewers. What we've been seeing at the PRE-SCREENINGS may not even be in the FINAL PRINT. I wouldn't be a bit surprised that what I saw last week was different from what was shown at the first round. And the next round will be different from the second one. We are lab-rats in the cage, being put through audio and visual stimuli to elicit a desired response, all for Joss's amusement and potential data gathering purposes. Nonetheless, for those of you who are writing spoilers intentionally - knock it off! For the rest, remember to write Comments on the Screening *SPOILERS* in your headline. That way you can in good conscience feel free to ignore the wee little spacebugs who come in anyway just so they can whine about it. They can't say they weren't warned. And if you came in here looking for spoilers... too bad!

T-Shirt Designs and a Question
Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:15:45

A friend and I are on Zazzle.com and we created 2 t-shirts so far and we may buy one of our designs and where them when we go on Sept 30th. They do send it to you as a shirt right? Also, how do I share the designs I did? Is anyone else going to create there own design and wear them when you go to the show or you just making them for fun.

What I Think Other People Are Thinking Of Me
Tuesday, 31 May 2005 12:06:01

Anyone who's been here awhile, and has had the chance to peruse other flylogs that I've done may think that I could possibly be the weirdest person ever born. Well, it was a forceps delivery, after 48 hours of labor, and I was bruised, to say the least...my father turned to my mother (my father thought I had been inexorably damaged in the delivery, thus, retarded) and said "We'll learn to love it." (Man, I wish they'd stop telling that story). But, I have since tried to guess what people may be thinking... manwithpez: Yeah, here's that letter you wanted typed. Boss1: (And, in five minutes...if you're this quick, how come you never seem to get anything done) Thanks. manwithpez: I got the milk. wifewithpez: (If you hadn't drank the last of it last night, I wouldn't have had to send you out in the morning to get me some more, you selfish prick) Thanks. manwithpez: I'm not sure I'm gonna pass the PT test. SSgtTester: (Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're not gonna pass it either) I'm sure you'll do fine. manwithpez: I have to pee. FFF.net(Collectively): (GROAN!) Yeah, you do that pez. manwithpez: Hello? Hello? ...hello? sonwithpez: (Heavy breathing...man, I wish this person who claims to be my father would get off the phone. What makes him think he's worthy of speaking to my toddler greatness. He is nothing compared to the goddess that is mother. Bastard) Mommy? manwithpez: You can not have candy for breakfast! daughterlikemother: (Yeah, right. That's why I saw you eat like 4 pieces while trying to hide it from me) Yes I can! manwithpez: Check it out Dad. I ripped this video off a DVD, reformatted it, and copied it over to my PDA. Pretty cool, huh? RetiredSMSgtDad: (For the last time, your devices hold nothing next to mine! But, that is pretty cool, I wish I could pull off something like that, but I'll never tell him that.) Your PDA is heavy son, and I'm sure that eats batteries. manwithpez: When are you coming to see us, Mom? momwithpez: (Are my gandchildren there? Otherwise, why are you calling?) Soon, Bryan. Frankly, I'm looking forward to doing another one of these, as I begin a quest to get something...anything published. And, for my own mental health safety, I've toned down what I think these people really think of me. Except my kids. The looks I get sometimes...

Business Trip...
Tuesday, 31 May 2005 20:49:51

For the first time in my life, I am going on a buisiness trip. Not to be trained or go to classes, but to actually be the one doing the training! That's ruttin' awesome! Apparently my employers think I'm doing something right, so I'm going to our Philadelphia office for an overnight trip from 6/1-6/2, and I won't be on here until at least Thursday evening. But still, that's really cool!! Wish me luck, and hopefully I won't make a fool out of myself.

Fire bad. Tree pretty.
Tuesday, 31 May 2005 21:01:08

So, I had a horrible time getting home from my vacation yesterday. I'm currently operating at about a 75 IQ (if you factor in that you drop 15 IQ points for every hour of sleep you lose. Don't know if it's true, but I think I read that somewhere. But like I said, I'm currently not functioning properly. It's a miracle I can type and form sentences.) The vacation itself was lovely, it was the delayed flight, long drive, getting home at 2:30am, getting up at 7am that was hard. But I made the best of it. On the flight home I sat by 2 young men (unfortunately too young) and managed, though my own ingenuity (my IQ was much higher last night) to bring Serenity into our conversation. Gotta spread the Browncoat love, right? So, hopefully, they'll check out the trailer, maybe pop by here, who knows. I just feel good, knowing I'm doing my part. And that reminds me that I have to check on the person who I lent my first Firefly DVD to... But now I must go home and sleep.
