Fan Fiction and Creating New Characters

Hi! I have a question, first I had posted my Fan Fiction on a FireflyCommnunity on livejournal and got totally bashed all becasue I decided to create a character which last I checked is not against the law, writers do it all the time.

Example: Buffy's first Season was just Willow, Buffy, Giles, Cordy, Xander and after Season 2 more people came on the show as the show went on also Angel was the same way. I dont hear anyone calling OZ or Fred a mary sue.

What is the problem with creating a character?

I am not going to stop writing just because some gorram prick doesnt like that I wrote in a new character. I intend on continuing cause I like to write and its my imagination.
