It's too hard for me to slim my list down to even a few favorite songs. It's not like I haven't littered this forum with good music in between barely coherent posts back in the day. ;)
Here's one I don't think I posted here before though. I actually forgot it even existed until I accidentally stumbled over it on YouTube a few months ago and found myself hitting repeat on it quite a few times.
Odd little song that just makes me smile whenever it pops up on my mp3 rotation.

I think my favorite was Together Again.
Michael Jackson played a lot of video games and was a huge fan of Sonic the Hedgehog. It's why certain beats in the Sonic games back during the Genesis days are also found in some of both Janet and Michael's music at the time.
Thought it was real cool to see somebody make a Sega Genesis version of Together Again. Totally would have fit in the game as a legit Sonic song.

Generally I don't like any song about "love" because the lyrics are such a disappointment.
But I like the SOUND of "Love Is". I found myself nodding my head and tapping my foot to the music. Has what I think of as girl-power rock sound. Joan Jett. Pat Benatar. Great voice, band plays well together, nice tempo, not overproduced. I like!

I think what Henley lyrics really paints are intense scenes about places and moments. End of summer, the empty beaches and lakes. Empty fields, people captured by evil dreams. Lyrics not JUST about seduction, but I feel the protagonist in that song had a ather who went away to war ("fly") and died, and that he, too, will be going away to war soon, too, ending HIS innocence.
Plus, I like his voice. And the instrumentals don't overpower that.

Can't let Kashmir and Dream On go by without a mention: I really like them, too.
Kashmir has that really interesting progression that almost sounds like something out of those old spy-show theme songs, but this song is totally not that.
Dream On has the same "sound", to me, as Henley (altho Boys of Summer has a faster tempo) and also America, but the Aerosmith lyrics are much more interesting than (say) A Horse with No Name.

I could never appreciate Elvis bc he became famous when I was young, and I know he was trying to look sexy but at that age "sexy" didn't mean much to me, all I could see was the sneer. Big turnoff. Funny, but I think Billy Idol was a lot the same, but more extreme.
What do you think of Johnny Cash? He's my favorite in the "outlaw/outsider" category.

As I said my mom liked Elvis since I was very small and I have seen the film "Flaming Star" which is the only Elvis movie I like as he doesn't sing in it. There aren't many Elvis songs that I "like" but that is one of them.
I like a few Canadian artists too like Roch Voisine. Colin James, Susan Aglukark, Kashtin. I'll see later if I can did any of them up.

One 2 Many was recorded the same stuio as ABBA. I'm not aware of any Petula Clark connection. I thought the entire album was original work - and I would play the entire album, on repeat, endlessly.

Alannah, Saraya (both albums), Madonna I loved the whole album, but those cuts were more popular.

I think you paint a lot nicer picture of what Don meant when he wrote the song.

I always took "The End of the Innocence" to mean the first time she had sex. So not only a song about seduction, but a song about the seduction of a young virgin woman.
And not a creepy (age inappropriate) or rapey seduction either. I imagine he's a bit older and "wiser" from the street smarts picked up from being a musician on the road all the time, but it's not some Harvey Weinstein type abuse of power. His "character" in the song is loosely based off of himself... somebody who's "loved" a lot of women, but never actually been IN love, and doesn't even really believe in the idea of love. She, on the other hand, is still a young and pure idealist who still believes in fairy tales and happily ever after, despite the fact that she already told him that her dad cheated on her mom and left. Perhaps a small town Christian girl who is saving herself for marriage, or at least until she can find what she believes will be the one true love she will eventually marry.
I think the song lyrics deserve a bit of a breakdown.

The start of the song here I pretty much summarized in who the girl being seduced was above. Happily Ever After failed, and it's inevitable because the fairy tales we're told when we grow up aren't real and life will let you down, just like when her father made a bad decision that changed her family forever.

The chorus, which is worded slightly different every time, is an allegory for sex. Although he just thinks of it as a most pleasurable act and would consider it just "sex" or even lewder terms, he knows that she would be mortified if he did, so he charms her with his poetic talents. "Give up. Give in. This is the end of the innocence. And that's a good thing... trust me."

That's fine. That's what music is about. And it's great songs like End of the Innocence that people still reflect on and debate about the meaning decades after they were on the top of the music charts.
I don't think this song had anything at all to do with politics, and they were just a mere backdrop for a short, intimate encounter between two people.
Just because Don was capable of writing politically charged songs like Dirty Laundry doesn't mean that every song he ever did was politically charged.
I also don't think that the "tired old man we elected king" was specifically Reagan. Not just because it was GHW Bush that was president when the song was released either. I think that line is simply referring to whoever we had elected as president, which up to that point had almost exclusively been tired old men. This song is timeless. The fact the song came out 5 months after Bush was elected and could be applied to either Bush or Reagan can make you take a step back and realize that any kid who's ever listened to it in the decades that followed could apply it to the president that was currently in office while they were discovering the world for themselves.
The only argument against that could perhaps be a young-ish Obama, but that's only from the perspective from adults such as us who realize that he wasn't exactly "old" when he was elected... to kids and teenagers he would still seem like an old man. And he sure aged a lot in 8 years.

Another thing I find extremely interesting is when you mishear lyrics to a song you have loved for a long time and finding out what the real lyrics are either force you to deny them or to change in your own mind and heart what the song meant.
I possibly have had that moment right now when looking at another favorite of mine.

Only I've never heard those lyrics and still don't when I listen to the song.

But just swapping those two lines out changes the tone of the song.
It's not as if my lyrics for the song have to be "what he did last night" that he can't understand. It sounds like he's very confused about life in general at this point and he feels he's making a whole lot of bad decisions without the need for a one night stand, possibly with a friend he'd never have had sex with while sober, being another mistake added to the pile.
But the "known" lyrics posted on the internet really seem to fail when it goes to the chorus the final time here:

The underlined part is completely wrong. There is no "when" at all, and you can clearly hear the "eese" sound at the end of what they claim to be "relief".
And "learned a lot of things from you" could imply that he was also a virgin himself before getting drunk and doing something with a friend he regrets. I've seen several websites that post the lyrics above, but I still hear the ones I've always heard when listening to the song. Until I find something official, such as the possibility of lyrics written on the inside of a CD jacket, I'm going with the ones I've always heard.

So, believe it or not, SIX, but I know NOTHING about Henley. Altho I can remember melodies and sing along with songs that I like, I generally don't remember titles or artists or ... anything. So I dip in and out of listening to music and there are whole decades that I don't know anything about.
But having looked up a couple more songs ("Heart of the Matter" and others) he's a lot more POLTICAL and philosophical than I think you give him credit for. There's a lot on that song about beating plowshares into swords and evil men making war to get elected, and I don't think he put those in there by accident.
Edited to add: I think the end of innocence isn't when its violated. The real end of innocence is when you knowingly participate in something you think is wrong.
I feel like the song is an allegory. Needs some thought.

I wasn't trying to insult him. Between his own songs and those he wrote for the Eagles, he's got some brilliant writing, very much including End of the Innocence.
I think he pulled an M Knight Shamalyan on you and JSF. You expect it to be political given his body of work so you assume that it is because of some words that pop up here and there in the song.
The politics are just the backdrop. There's a girl who's parents just split, who's just realizing how terrible the world is out there, and Don ('s character) is offering her reprieve. "A place where we can go, still untouched by man". He's telling her that "happily ever after fails and we've been poisoned by these fairy tales" and then offering her up one of his own.
I'll ask you the same question I posed to JSF last night... How else do you explain the line "Offer up your best defense?"
There's no way you can make that line fit with Defense spending and the Military Industrial Complex.
I could be off base about it being an artist seducing a virgin into a one night stand. But the song is very much about sex.
In any event, I'd put "End of the Innocence" on the top list of hilariously bad song choices for wedding. Somewhere right in between "Every Breath You Take" by the Police and "Hey Ya!" by Outkast.
Even Andre 3000 from Outkast came out and said that it was a terrible choice to play at a wedding, even though it was on every wedding playlist at the time. I read a great article where he was laughing about weddings with old white ladies dancing to lyrics like "Don't want to meet your Daddy, just want you in my Caddy. Don't want to meet yo mama, just want to make you comma."

Now I know that JSF will say that it's about the actual act of sailing on the actual sea in an actual boat, but most music is a little deeper than that... at least the good music, and a song about sailing wouldn't explain the broad mass appeal, hitting number one on the Billboard charts for a week in 1980 and winning song and album of the year.
A millennial meth head who'd never heard this song before could accidentally stumble upon it one night in 2021 and be like "yeah, that's what happens when I smoke meth, man".
Is it about sex? Sure. It can be if that's what you want it to be. I know you've got some serious hangups about sex, JSF, but you're no judge.

I saw a real interesting video about how melody is dying. Sounds like something a Boomer or even a GenXer would say these days, but the guy who made the video is quite a bit younger than I am.
He used a lot of examples of new music that I definitely would never listen to, but I did listen to rap a lot back in the day so it's not as if I hadn't listened to my fair share of songs without almost any melody.
That being said, while reflecting on my favorite rap songs... those that are still on my mp3 player today, they were ones that had melodies to them. One even comes from a group that called themselves Bone Thugs and Harmony.
You could even find it in the Tupac songs still on my mp3 player...
Even if there isn't a large variation of vocal melody in that song, and trust me... Tupac has quite a lot of melodic range compared to your average rap artist, there's plenty of melody surrounding it.
Then I looked on my list here, and everybody else's, and I would say that there's plenty of melody in all of the choices here.
So I tried thinking real hard if there has ever been a song without melody that I've liked over the years, and I think I found one.
ETA: As not to offend those with more delicate sensibilities, because I'd like somebody to tell me if there is any melody here or not, I've opted to put the radio edit here instead of the uncensored version.
But is it really without melody? Listening to it now I don't believe that it is. Melody certainly isn't the driving force of this jam, but there is melody to it... Isn't there?
Or am I mistaking several really infectious hooks for melody here?

Oooh... That's a eerie tune. I think that's an example of a song that doesn't have any hooks.
What I mean by "hook" is the part of the music that sticks with you. Usually it's a phrase in the chorus or a riff. In the song I posted above, "Battleflag", I hadn't heard in well over a decade, but when it popped up on my recommended a year or two ago I rememberd it immediately and I've listened to it a lot since then.
Though I remembered some of the words (and was still hearing some of them wrong until I looked up the lyrics for it), it was really some of the beats and instrumental progressions that stuck with me.
I'm not sure if it's possible to have songs completely without a melody. Even the Philip Glass song that you posted has melody, although I can't imagine listening to it on a playlist and feel that it would almost have to be accompanied by whatever visuals were in the movie it was used in as an aide to set the proper mood.
But I think, that short of any rap outside of Bone Thugs and Tupac that I will occasionally still listen to, that Battle Flag by Lo Fi All-Stars is probably the closest thing to a song without melody that I actually enjoy.
I'm not very familiar with Billie Elish's work, but he put a few of her songs in there. The one song he put in there that I do remember grabbing my attention while I was at work one night was Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do". Though that's not a song I have on my mp3 player, I did kind of like it the few times I'd hear it at work and was surprised that it was Swift when I finally remembered to look it up.
He says in the song that the verse had 3 notes. The lead-up to the chorus has 2 notes, and the chorus uses 0 notes.
I think a song like this can be interesting and grab your attention when it's different than most of the songs around it, but I can't help but feel that in a different (future?) world where all the music coming out has extremely minimal melody that a song like this would be immediately forgotten 3 weeks later after it stopped getting radio play and was replaced by the next similar sounding song.
I'm thinking a lot about this now because I have noticed that when I go outside to work in the garage and listen to the radio and get exposed to new music, almost none of it grabs my attention at all, but then some come around that REALLY grab it like the Fire For You song I posted a few days ago and the songs I posted the last year or two in Brenda's Muzik threads.
I guess I'm trying to figure out "why" certain new songs grab my attention (even if I ultimately wouldn't listen to them a lot, like Swift's song), or I end up REALLY liking them like "Fire For You" or this one...

Trampoline and Take Me To Church have plenty of melody. Look What You Made Me Do has almost none. Yet, even though I really love Fire for You, many parts of the song I think are closer to Look What You Made Me Do in terms of the amount of melody there is in the song.
Sorry if I'm rambling. It's all just interesting to me why I like some music, and I'm completely indifferent to other music.
Though I wanted it to be simple and be able to say "I like music with melody", I don't think it's that simple at all. Not only does it appear that I enjoy some with very minimal melody, but I'm sure there's a ton of old music I could think of with plenty of melody that I'd never listen to outside of it being part of a movie or TV show.

Here's a song I loved in high school and still have on my playlist today. It wasn't until sometime after high school that I actually really listened to the words and understood it, and that's probably why I still like it so much more than the vocals or instruments.

I heard one I hadn't heard in a long time on a youtube video but I immediately remembered it from my time spent playing Castlevania: Curse of Darkness on the original XBOX. The Castlevania series has has fantastic music since the original 80's game and ranks among my favorite collection of video game soundtracks along with the Final Fantasy series.
Nothing like a great soundtrack to really get you into a game. Songs like this, IMO are so good that they kind of ruin all but the best ones out there.

Oh... Since I'm doing Castlevania I have to do this. It might be my favorite Castlevania song. It's certainly the most chill one they've put on offer that I've ever heard.
I really love how the beginning of a lot of these songs are unique and never get repeated, with the looping section coming sometime after the intro to the song.

True, to an extent at least... If it were only lyrics I were interested in, it wouldn't explain my love for video game music. There have been songs in VGM over the years with lyrics, but those have usually been pretty bad if you don't include Japanese lyrics songs. I mean, those lyrics could be pretty bad too, but I wouldn't know.
I think with the examples I was posting above I was going slightly out of my way to give examples of songs with more interesting lyrics.
It's always nice though when a catchy song keeps me listening long enough to realize that it's got good lyrics too.

The package needed to include the "who, what, when, where, how, and why" of every analysis- all pages signed and dated, all instrument printouts signed and dated, all calibrations referenced to calibration data etc.
I had to review them. And because we trained a lot of new people, I had to review them CLOSELY, and get back with ppl on things like: "You didn't sign this page" or "You mis-identified these peaks" or "Your blanks are too high". My all-time favorite? "Your components add up to 110%".
I put the "anal" into "analytical chemistry".
It was mind-numbing, tedious (but interesting!) work.
But that's one of the reasons why I kind of laugh when people talk about "evidence" or "audits" or "how much moisture is in the air" or even "how bureaucracy works" as if they know what they're talking about, and I don't. I know KIKI has similar experience, but while I have the 10,000-ft view, KIKI has that whole 30,000-ft interagency thing going. And KIKI is MUCH more knowledgeable about biochem and all things medical.

Not like a favorite of mine or anything, but I heard it on the radio the other day and a wave of nostalgia hit me. I didn't even remember that it was Selena who did the song until I looked it up with some of the words on the Tube.
It is a cute video from a different time. Girls her age when this song was made are putting out some pretty terrible shit these days.

No. It's not. Wix, as far as I know is a legit website where you can create your own website for "free"... I'm sure there are strings.
"10.trackints.com" looks pretty damn suspicious though.
This really has me curious why the hell you'd be getting to either of those sites from a link here. Do you have malwarebytes installed? You should run a scan and make sure somebody else isn't redirecting you places you aren't trying to go.

I never got into country myself either. My stepdad listened to it but by that point my musical tastes had already been established and Country wasn't working for me.
I did, however, always love this song when it came up on his tape in the pickup truck.

Final Fantasy has too many great songs to list...
A lot of their intense songs for tense parts are great, but my favorite usually is the chill music. You could really just put on all the chill FF music and fall asleep to it.
And I really love how so many talented artists have taken some of my favorite songs from the 80's and 90's that only had the limited capabilities of 8bit and 16bit machines and gave them proper orchestrial scores.

Outside of my mother's love of Elvis and rock from the 50s the other music when I was growing up was country. Johnny Cash, Hank Snow, Wilf Carter and the like. My dad liked Wilf Carter and Hank Snow both of whom were Canadian. My mom it was Patsy Cline, Loretta Lyn, Tammy Wynnette, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins.
Now for myself because I grew up surrounded by it all through high school and into my 20s and 30s, I couldn't stand it. But I started hearing Billy Ray Cyrus then Tim McGraw and decided their stuff wasn't too bad. Also Alabama and Alan Jackson.
As I've said I've been surrounded by it all my life from my mom and a friend of hers with classical. So my own tastes now run from classical to rock with just a tinge of metal.
So, I'm always glad to expand someone's musical knowledge.

... until after a few hours the router cascaded through a quick series of more random and global failures into not working at all.
