The entire atmosphere surrounding all of this is completely different than it was in 2016 and 2020.

Things just kind of feel normal again.

It's like all the loudest voices either screamed themselves out or they aren't being platformed anymore and/or we just finally, collectively tuned them out for a change.

Scorps were a bit before my time. I remember being around 11 or 12 and hearing Winds of Change for the first time on a long gone Hard Rock station and loved it. I was the oldest brother and cousin and didn't really have anybody older than me influencing me into music, so I pretty much listened to pop crap until I was in Jr. High and then my tastes went all over the map.

I know nothing about the lead singer or any Eyes Wide Shut parties they went to, but I'm not surprised to hear it.

But I wasn't asking you about the current state of the world. We know that's been fucked for quite a while.

I was just asking you about the temperature of the moment is all.

It seems a hell of a lot cooler than the last two election cycles were. I don't see all the hate and panic and crazy talk. I'm not saying all of that doesn't still exist, but outside of inflicting the two Goobers upon myself here, it hasn't encroached upon my bubble even by accident this time. It felt like you were drowning in it for the last 8 years.

Things are pretty normal.

It just doesn't feel normal because nothing has been normal for so long now.

Trump’s Real Inaugural Address

The president delivered his true message after the main event.

Given the limited space in the rotunda, an overflow room was set up in the Capitol Visitor Center. It was for the dignitaries who didn’t quite carry the statesmanlike import of TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, whose company is presently operating domestically in violation of federal law. Gov. Ron DeSantis was obviously in the overflow room.

But this crowd ended up getting the real speech after the overworked formality Trump was forced to read off of the teleprompter. Still only an hour into his second presidency, Trump was cooking, in an uninterrupted riff about whatever was on his mind.

According to Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and first lady Melania Trump forced him to take out some of the more “controversial” elements of his Inaugural speech that he wanted to keep in—like celebrating the Jan. 6 “hostages.” The president reiterated his belief that the 2020 election was “rigged” and thought that he should’ve won California. He talked about some parts of the border wall that would dissolve if hit with acid and that people would climb in “like rabbits” if not built with the proper materials. He kept breaking, from whatever it was he was doing, to converse with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Most importantly, he was having a good time.

“This was a better speech than the one I made upstairs,” he told the overflow crowd, an observation that was somehow both fully true and wholly false.

The sense that this speech overshadowed what came before was, on the whole, quite familiar. Each thing that Trump says will be surpassed by something he says 10 minutes later, rendering the original event as good as dead. This was before Trump had even stopped by the Capitol One Arena to visit yet another overflow crowd, or settled into the Resolute desk at the White House, or attended several inaugural balls. More would be said, and what was said immediately before that would recede into memory.
