February Warmth
Thursday, 01 February 2007 13:48:56

New month, new blog. Nothing really drives this new blog except since yesterday marked the 32nd anniversary of my mother’s passing, it is time to move on, lest anyone think I spend my every waking hour ruminating on the past and mourning the present. Actually I am celebrating the future! Thanks to my wife Toni’s birthday generosity, I am going to DragonCon in Atlanta this Labor Day weekend. Lots of time to plan and pack and anticipate. Most of my Browncoat family will be there and we will rock the place!

Still need help! Please look!

Hey, I'm still trying to raise money for my upcoming Africa trip. Check out this thread:

Help with quotes
Thursday, 01 February 2007 19:14:04

Not sure where I heard these, and no doubt I am remembering them wrong, so feel free to correct me if you can quote a source. "Those who would give up their liberty in exchange for security will soon have neither." - Benjamin Franklin "All citizens of the empire are required to keep, and practice with weapons. Under penalty of death, no subject of the empire shall keep, or practice with weapons." - Roman law. ?? Which are you: Citizen or subject? "The tree of liberty must occasionally be watered with blood."

Hurry Up and Wait
Friday, 02 February 2007 01:15:15

Well, nowadays when I'm not in class, I'm at work. And, when I'm not at work, I'm either doing my homework or hanging out with this really hot guy who doesn't want a serious relationship, but enjoys staying in and watching "Firefly" with me. (Yeah, I'd be a bad browncoat if I didn't at least show him one episode! The man is hooked now!) And, when I'm not doing any of that, I'm SLEEPING!! But does that leave me any time to work on my fanfic, The Children of Shadow. No. Unfortunately. I really don't even have the time to write this blog. But I needed to vent, so I took a couple minutes away from my homework. I'll type to you guys later. -Phyre

A prayer for my fellow Floridians...

Hey, all. Let's say a prayer for those who lost their lives to tornadoes here in the Sunshine State, as well as those who've lost everything else... Rob O.

Firefly DVD boxset $20 at Best Buy
Friday, 02 February 2007 23:36:47

Just saw the national ad for Best Buy for DVD boxsets under $20 -- including our beloved BDS... Time to stock up on the FF gifts & loaner sets!

and I'm feelin' good.
Saturday, 03 February 2007 00:34:16

Woohoo. My teacher actually showed up today. Haha. And we got our papers back and I got an A++. No joke. That's what he gave me. I knew this class would be a breeze. On the grading rubric every mark was "exceeds expetations". I don't mean to brag, but it seems like something has finally gone my way. Who knew I was good at school? Hahaha. I feel like I can accomplish something now. Good feeling.

On That Myspace
Saturday, 03 February 2007 07:29:48

So I finally caved in a while back and got myself a MySpace. Originally, I got one so as I could get my name added to the Clerks II credits (which, by the way, I did!). But then a couple weeks ago, I rediscovered it and started building it. And now I officially have a MySpace. It's terrifying. It's also right here:

The suckage of formality
Saturday, 03 February 2007 18:28:33

Okay. The last two days, I've looked like a corporate flunky twice. As in, pinstripe and sweater on Friday, pinstripe suit today. (And it's not even brown! Okay. Well, most Fireflans don't get that reference, but... *sigh*) I did science fair. With MORDACIL. Yep. Know him IRL. Well, we got third place. Another friend we know got second, and a couple of our friends (separate projects, BTW) got first. This is the regional, and I should be happy I got third, but, honestly, I talked to four or five judges in a span of two hours. Let's make this clear: there was an hour and a half allocated to set up. Okay, yeah, some people came with schools, so that's why they had to have that long. Then there was a random hour and a half before judging started. Which was two hours, during which I had to stand in 2.5-3 inch heels, and be pleasant, and not be conspicuous about eating my food. Good news is we didn't have to stay for the public viewing. I would have died, because judging was over at one, and public viewing was four to six pm... Well, I went back up today, for the project breakdown and awards ceremony, and we got third place. Did I mention that MORDACIL was wearing jeans, a tee shirt, and a fleece hoodie pull over? OMFG. And, you know, we talked about this yesterday, and he showed up in the same sort of thing today. Well. *sighs* I feel better. That may be the effect of watching a Dalek implode. Formality sucks.

I'm such a whore

Fine, I sold out and got a MySpace page. But I only did it so I can visit my Browncoat friends so let me know where you are at. If you want to see it:

I Love Wisconsin in Winter
Sunday, 04 February 2007 07:23:29

It's currently -13 F. Tomorrow's low is going to be -16 F. Monday isn't going to be much warmer and as much as I would love nothing better than to stay in my bed ALL day, I have to go to work AND class. Here's to hoping the city busses die because of the cold and then I'll have a justifiable reason for not going to class: I'm certainly not walking 2.5-3 miles in that weather. Hell no.

Sod's Law is at work again
Sunday, 04 February 2007 10:58:06

Hi there, I started my special subject on Friday. I'm doing the Russian Revolution. But on the whole Friday was a painful day. Firstly the bus to Durham was 10 minutes late meaning I nearly missed the connecting bus to Newcastle and in my hurry to get on I banged my head. The seminar was good but then as I was walking to the library my shoes decided they wanted to cripple me and I could barely walk. Then the book I have to do notes from for next week is only available in the student texts collection which means you can only have it out for four hours, so i couldn't take it home for the weekend. The I bought a chicken sandwich which really should have been done under the trades descriptions act because i have seen more meat in a vegan's lunchbox. So after hobbling to the bus station the bus to durham was 15 minutes late, got stuck in traffic and I missed my bus home. I phoned my dad to come and pick me up and because my shoes were crippling me (hey i'm living up to my nickname!), i decided to sit on my file which was really funny because I think people might have thought I was drunk. Or a tramp. But a well dressed tramp since I've finally got my brown suede jacket back from the dry cleaners. anyway TTFN Jennifer (at the moment actually a hobbleit) -x-

Random Squee-age
Sunday, 04 February 2007 22:04:07

Okay, [random squee moment], continuing with the strange Who references to come from me this week.... I just realized (though I've known this for a couple of months) that I'm going to Barcelona(!) YEah, I do know that it's the city, not the planet, and that I'll be going to Paris as well, and I don't speak a bit of useful Spanish, but... [/Random squee moment... ] And anyway, I've never seen this particular quote before: "We're focusing on their struggles, not a guy with a gorgon on his templok or something." - Marti Noxon on Serenity's crew Yeah. I know, it's like: [continuing random squeeage] "Fizz, get a handle on yourself. You're gonna make a fool of yourself when you see a dog with a nose in Barcelona. Shut up, you idiot."[/random squee continuage] Right. There it is, I'm done with the Whovian oddness for the post.

RiverIsMyGoddess / SFC Alexander access issues
Monday, 05 February 2007 11:45:43

hey everyone. I may not have as much access this week as I usually do. I am still working on group work for a project, so I am away from my computer during most of the work day. To add to that, my home computer froze on me 3 times on Saturday (I am sorry for suddenly disappearing in Haven Merri-doll and Rose-doll), though it did work last night without any problems. I don't know if it will keep working or not, so I may not be around much. To the barflies, imponderables/water drinkers, Forsaken, 76th troops, and any others (such as all the shiny people in FFF chat that I never talk to anymore :crap:), I love and miss y'all and hopefully will be able to get on/try to catch up at some point this week. EDIT: I removed one Trojan horse and 6 Trojan horse installers from the computer last night, and it worked ok for the rest of the evening. Around 2 or so I woke up and noticed that it was frozen again, and when I reset it, it kept saying it couldn't find the boot disk :crap:. I'll play with it more today, hopefully I can get it to limping at least. ~jimi

A random (and rambling) interlude
Monday, 05 February 2007 18:15:00

I think I got a convert. I bushwhacked 'em with a YouTube video, (Rob Zombie/River - Living Dead Girl) They so want to see 'Serenity' now, but I said series first, or it won't make sense... Anyhow, I am now trying to be a Writer. I've been re-reading my original stuff (non-FF) and cussing the flatness, the poverty of style, the grammar...you get the idea. It's Block Time. But at least I've been in the warm, at my own desk, with all my reference books to hand. And no bloody customers. It's a bit of a scary leap, actually. You guys have all been great on the feedback/discussion front, so I thought it was worth the gamble. Of course, I now have to come up with some fresh and original ideas, and dress them all in sparkling prose. No more ripping off random elements that amuse me, and tying them up with obscure literary jokes. (Mind you, it got Terry P started, so maybe it's worth a shot.) The cosmic oddness that is my fic writing will still continue, though. It's a good outlet for all the ramdomness that won't shoe-horn into anywhere else. After all, it started as a means of clearing mental blockage, before it became an obsession. And nobody else will let me make puns in Mandarin. Third time the charm on the new house front, with any luck. This one is old-fashioned, but it looks in good nick and nobody has done anything odd to it in the way of dodgy conservatories, random extensions or 'features'. It's done out like a grandparental home, but apart from the truly scary carpet in one room (psychadelic orange swirls...'Miranda'...) it has potential. And a nice large study.

Across the Universe - Potential Train Wreck?
Monday, 05 February 2007 18:15:55

Hey All I tried to make this a thread, but no one was responding. Figured a blog would work better. Yesterday, I saw the trailer for this new movie that won't be out until late September this year (actually the same weekend SERENITY came out two years ago) that caught my interest. It's this movie called ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, and no it's not a sci-fi movie. It's a coming of age in the 60's movie that being described as sort of a Beatles musical. Here's the link to it.

It's cold!
Monday, 05 February 2007 18:16:11

Woo. It's freezing outside. Actually, it's below freezing. Around -1 F. Cold! So, I woke up early. Not cool, but I got to do it. Got all ready for class. Drove downtown. Get their early. And then wait for class to start...and it's cancelled. -_- AHHHHHHHHHHH. I drove in the freezing cold. Walked from the parking lot. Which isn't that far. but it was so cold and windy that it felt like the took a long time. I need to move somewhere warm. Haha. Like Arizona or..or...I don't know. lol Somewhere. Eventually. After i get a good job, and a Big and maybe a dog. :-D

Exam Stress. Oh Joy.
Monday, 05 February 2007 21:53:17

I'm four fifths of a Microsoft Office Specialist Master Instructor (Office 2003). The only thing standing between me and that fancy certificate is one exam - Excel Expert. To be a Microsoft Office Specialist Master Instructor, you need to pass five exams - Word Expert, Excel Expert, PowerPoint Specialist, Access Specialist and Outlook Specialist. I did the other four exams last year and passed them all first time as they were all subjects I love. Unfortunately, I don't love Excel Expert. It's not a subject I teach and never one I was comfy with, so I didn't do it at the time, figuring I'd study it and do the exam later. And I did study... sometimes... but as people who observe my pathetic lack of posts know, I *don't* have a lot of spare time. So I just never got around to teaching myself the subject fully and doing the exam. I actually took three days off last week to study. Except it was also my birthday last week, so study didn't happen. I had until April to do the exam. Or so I thought until this morning, when my boss said she's submitting paperwork for the IT centre by the end of the week and needs me to complete the exam by Friday.

Bedlam Bards show in Raleigh
Monday, 05 February 2007 23:32:02

Because I'm the coordinator of the Raleigh "Can't Stop the Serenity" screening, Cedric of the Bedlam Bards contacted me and asked me if I would work out the details for their appearance in Raleigh Saturday April 21, 2007. They will be doing an East Coast tour this spring. In return, the Bards will generously donate a portion of the proceeds from their show to Equality Now via our CSTS shindig (which will be June 21, 2007, by the way!). We will also be having a raffle during the show, and all money raised by the raffle will go to Equality Now. CSTS posters and tickets to the Raleigh screening will be on sale at the Bards' show, as well. For more info, see:

Snooooww Daaaaayy!!!
Tuesday, 06 February 2007 01:03:15

We made it about 3 miles from home to the truckstop at the interstate when I said "this is completely ruttin' nuts" and turned the car around. Three inches an hour or better of snowfall with wind chill into the negative numbers and blowing snow... I think discretion was definitely the better part of commuting today. Schools were closed any old how, so we all played Yahtzee until my ears rattled. Woodstove's just starting to burn down and it's time to tuck the wee one in.

Is there such a thing as too obsessive?
Tuesday, 06 February 2007 02:14:20

From time to time I tend to ramble on about certain things, Firefly/Serenity being one of them. People tell me that I need a life. Is it really so bad to be passionate about something you love?

First Time Logged on With the the New MacBook
Tuesday, 06 February 2007 13:13:53

Hey, fellow Browncoats! Just wanted to share the good news. I've finally joined the portable computing world with my first MacBook. Lovin' it so far. Just takes some getting used to. Hooking up to the wireless network at home has been a challenge, but I think I've figured it out. Anyway, no more excuses for not posting, right? Talk to ya'll soon, Rob O.

Damn you ATI!!!
Tuesday, 06 February 2007 16:22:49

I bought a new graphics card and attempted to install it this past weekend. After 4 hours of fruitless labor my brother-in-law and I couldn't get it to work...at all. Hopefully I can get my money back from Newegg. I had to...uummm...modify it a tad to get it to fit in the slot properly. Hopefully they will not look to closely at the inside of the DVI port and see the scraped away plastic. Seriously who puts two huge capacitors right in front of the AGP slot on a motherboard. Now I know what happens when the people who barely graduate from college with a 1.20 GPA get a job in the technical sector.

I really should have done this sooner...
Tuesday, 06 February 2007 17:35:54

...Registered here, I mean. At least since I first got wind of the possibility of a Firefly MMO (heard it first from Real Life Comics, btw), at most since I first stumbled on the site. Anyway, I bet/hope this will help me keep up with any news at all coming over the wires.

It was the best day ever
Tuesday, 06 February 2007 19:33:04

Hi there, Today may well knock the monkey forest off the top of best days ever (and that'd be hard to do cos, you know, monkeys). Firstly, I got my mark for my exam. I got 69 which is a 2:1 and though it's only provisional I also got the highest mark in the class. Yay me. Then later I got a poster signed by Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright. They were in Newcastle HMV promoting Hot Fuzz and after spending two and a half hours standing in a queue I got a poster signed. Cool. TTFN Jennifer -x-

What a night...
Wednesday, 07 February 2007 18:43:05

Okay. So maybe—and I don’t know how this works so please don’t nobody get offended—but maybe, Phoenix Rose did some of the Hoo-Doo that She-Do so well on me. Maybe it was the Captain Morgan. I found myself in a pretty nice hotel last night. I was treated to the next step in our technology. Pretty cool stuff folks. My credit card has a microchip in it as some do these days. My room assignment was stored on my card and it became my card key to the room! Of course the door had a number touchpad for my PIN. Later during the night, I felt an urge to go out and get a drink. Didn’t want to wake Mrs. Quest so I went alone. When I got back, I wanted to make a quiet entrance. I would have succeeded but for one thing. I used the wrong PIN. Suddenly a loud, piercing beep started. Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep. Like a microwave oven that was done cooking and couldn’t shut up about it. It just kept going. The alarm wasn’t coming from the door or the room though. Or even the hallway. It was coming from my credit card. Embedded with the microchip was a tiny beeper. I was a victim of collusion between the credit card companies and the hotel industry! If someone stole my card and tried to use it improperly, the card wouldn’t shut up so no thief would ever want to use it! I was simultaneously annoyed and amazed. This was a fantastic idea! But how do you get it to shut up? I was apparently not destined to know. The beeping became louder and louder until at last I couldn’t’ stand it anymore. I was becoming panicky. Finally the beeping was loud enough that I awoke from my dream. I got up to hit the snooze. So, before going to bed I was responding to some threads and one of them was Hell’s Kitten’s brief rant on key cards. (I also visited her Flickr site to see what was new and found a pleasant surprise waiting.) I visited Roxy Freefall’s MySpace and read? no watched her latest blog about moving into their new house, and a couple of the outdoor shots inspired the hotel aspect. As did the fireplace pic I posted at the Pub. And did I mention the rum? But now as I write this, I find that I’m probably going to have to track you down and kill you all for reading this. Because I have revealed to you my million dollar idea and I can let anyone else have it. An easy end to credit fraud. At least some of it. What would that be worth. Well, I have enjoyed your company while it lasted. But now the time has come to end it all. Implanted in this blog is a subliminal signal. I have for months been beaming it to you. With every image I post. You are my thralls. There is, not a “Safe Word”, but an “Initiate Command”. To end yourselves. I’m sorry it came to this but you dear, sweet, wonderful people with your candor and understanding, have contaminated me. I can’t help but put my heart on my sleeve these days and that’s put me in a bad place. I really need to be a millionaire. And you all, well, you are in my way. I’m right sorry about that. Now make your peace.

Updated Fish Job
Wednesday, 07 February 2007 19:03:15

In an effort to get to know LiveJournal, I am posting the Fish Job there. Of course, as I read it through it again I see all manner of things that need fixing, so I'll be making some minor changes. Possibly major changes as things go on... My theory is to post roughly a chapter every day until I get through FJ and ET, then go into the new one (posted both on LJ and here on FFF.) It'll take a good two months to post all the old stuff, so I hope to be done writing by then - but I make no promises! Anyway, the new fic relies heavily on the old, so if you want to refresh yourself (on a version with fewer errors), take a stroll over to LJ. My posts have the Frankenstein bride jack-o-lantern.

Snow Day Revisited
Wednesday, 07 February 2007 22:36:37

Day 3 at home. In the snow. We have not yet been forced to eat the sled dogs, which is good because we don't have any. The lawn tractor with plow attachment will not start, ergo: we shovel. The roof needs clearing. I made a start, but am quite tired and sore just at present. Happily baking and cooking away, wood stove chugging along nicely. The boy went out to play while Hubbs took a little time off from telecommuting (on dial up, props to him for sheer determination!) to take a turn digging us out. The first tunnel (through the snow bank where the town plow has been leaving its tailings) collapsed, the second one is named Pussywillow. This is a happy child. Missing work? Not so much. Missing pay? More so. The National Weather Service is using terms like "historic" in the forecast. Thank you NOAA, I really needed to know that. So historic vs. record, discuss. Record = measured and documented. Historic = two old coots independently corroborate that their grandfathers said it got up to HERE when they were boys. Whaddaya think?

Using art project to spread the word
Thursday, 08 February 2007 04:23:41

A while back I posted a hand drawn Serenity logo. It was made to be used as a background for a project in my drawing class. It was a self portrait that involved my "personal culture". I had to explain the meaning of all the parts of the picture (like the logo) and it is now hanging in the hallway outside my classroom. Perhaps someone will be intrigued. By the way, is anyone interested in seeing the completed project if I can pry the camera away from my brother in the next week?

Snow Day....sort of
Thursday, 08 February 2007 06:59:00

HUZZAH!!! College is closed cause of the little old snow here in England, so i've got a day off!!! BUT my parents have told me to phone in work (part timer unfortunatly) to see if they need any help. :crap: *sigh* one step forward, three steps back by the looks of it. Unless of course work DOESN'T need the help, then i'm free!!! *evil laugh* (ah...gotta love early morning insanity... ) Cheers Choo

Justice League DVD's (Australia)
Thursday, 08 February 2007 09:14:04

I'm just a-wonderin' when we'll be getting the boxsets of "J.L." and "J.L.Unlimited" Down Under? I've got all the episodes that are available, as well as "Secret Origins" and "Starcrossed: the movie", but I'm seriously jonesing for more! Does anyone have some info on this whole situation, or do I have to wait for Cartoon Network to stop screening them before the eps are released?

Oh. Wow.
Thursday, 08 February 2007 14:48:57

The response I got to a mere blog entry...wow. I can see myself really liking this community, the people seem so...*grins*...shiny.

I hate snow
Thursday, 08 February 2007 19:36:48

I hate snow so gorramn much. The chavs form school and snow is like the worst combination ever, especially when the hwoon dahns start putting mud and rocks into their snowballs. I fell over this morning too on the ice, my whole left hip is one big bruise. And then, as if my day hadn't been bad enough, the snow was so bad that I couldn't even get out to my boyfriend's house to see him for just a few hours before he goes skiing for a week in Italy tomorrow with school. My mum is ace though, somehow, she found his number, and phoned him, without me knowing, then shoved the phone at me (all depressed) and told me to talk. we just spent ages on the phone to each other, and would have been longer, had the batteries not run out. He leaves tomorrow at breaktime, and if I can't get to school because of the stupid snow.... well, lets just say I won't be the most fun person to be around. I hate snow.

I passed!!! I passed!!!
Thursday, 08 February 2007 19:55:17

First time!!! Woo hoo!!! I passed the Microsoft Office Excel Expert (2003) last night, which was my fifth and final exam. Which means that I am now a Microsoft Office Specialist Master Instructor (2003) :) Except that I'm not. Well, I am, but to be officially certified as a Master Instructor on completion of the exams I have to fork out another €150 for the certificate. No wonder Bill Gates is so rich! Since I'm not rich, I'll hang on for a while before ordering the certificate. I'm still paying off Christmas! Besides, once I have the exams everyone in IT Training knows I'm a Master Instructor. Continuing the Bill-Gates-is-rich theme, Microsoft Office 2007 is on the way. So in another year or so I'll be doing all these exams again. Teachers always get the most homework! On the plus side... the exam is FINISHED and I PASSED!!! Yay!!!

Kaylee
Thursday, 08 February 2007 20:06:58

I saw Kaylee the other day, in the latest Stargate Atlantis episode (S3E20). It was the best of times, and it was the worst of times. It was beautiful. There she was, our Kaylee, shiny as ever (she's Atlantis' new Doctor now, lol; the irony), all Kaylee like, acting kinda like in that scene where she wanted to question the buffet table. Made me cry to see her stand there, appearing a bit taller too, somehow. It was sad, too; cuz it was Kaylee, but it weren't. And for a brief moment it even felt like Firefly, but it weren't. :( Still, it was Kaylee; and I love my mechanic.

The epic snow saga continues
Friday, 09 February 2007 02:13:57

This damned thing has more sequels than Star Trek. Sheesh. Hubby heard thunder last night. I only heard the wind. We awoke to 3 more feet. I almost cried. No sign of this stopping much before Monday. The tractor won't start so we have to shovel. We have run out of places to put the white stuff. It is a good thing that snow has an excellent 'R' value because I can't get it all off the roof. The town brought in a big orange highway plow to clear our access road (300 feet of not technically driveway). They got stuck (briefly) on the way out. I must admit it was pretty cool watching them move all that fluffy stuff at one time. We are now out of cheesecake. :banghead: Must make more. I started a batch of home brew. Called the family to let them know we're still alive and keeping warm. Work has pretty much written me off for the week. The Today show was about ten miles north of us filming this morning. How they got there remains a mystery since the major highway has been closed and reopened more times than Inara's robes. My son is still cute any my husband is still a source of warmth. There, life looks better. That, and it's too dark to see what outside looks like.

Mrs Tracy Lake (the original)
Friday, 09 February 2007 02:48:49

So the assh*le and the skank have remarried. Tee hee hee. Marry in haste repent at leisure. I am tickled freakin pink every month when himself has to write me a check for half the Navy retirement. I know it bugs the hell out of the skank. She tried to get back at me by getting new mail labels that have her as Mrs Tracy Lake above himselfs name - she put one on the envelop with the latest check. Didn't bug me at all - vindictive beatch that I can be, I got mail labels that say "Mrs Tracy Lake (the original and mother of the children)" and sent a picture of me and the kids smiling and waving to her. I am a bitch and I should be ashamed!

Images in Blue Sun Room
Friday, 09 February 2007 04:18:16

Uploaded some images into the Blue Sun Room. I'm afraid that they're in the wrong spot, being banners...but I didn't see a way to put them under the actual "banner" category. If anyone happens to like the banners, I have a graphics journal on LJ.

So many changes ...
Friday, 09 February 2007 08:31:22

I realize this update is a little late in coming, but so many things have been happening, it's been hard to get my thoughts together. I have started graduate school at the University of Southern California as a Professional Writing Master's candidate, and so far, it's been really fun! I've met some really interesting people and I feel like I've been able to do some good work. My move to Los Angeles was fairly uneventful - as cross-country moves go and I'm really enjoying my new home in Southern California! I was lucky enough to head out here already knowing some folks and I have to say those friends have been a lifeline for me and made everything so much easier to handle.

Where could they have gone?
Friday, 09 February 2007 08:45:16

I'm sort of big into astronomy and I was wondering if for a moment, consider Firefly's star system was some star system relatively close to our solar system. Since humabs left Earth and went into space, and they don't have faster-than-light capability, has anyone wondered what star system they could have traveled to? Joss Whedon never said where they went, so I have two candidate star systems they could have gone to. One is Sirius, a hot white star, and if it had planets, it could have a large biozone where several Earth-like planets could queeze inside. Maybe groups of planets - binary, trinary, or rosette orbits where several lareg terrestrial worlds orbit eachother around a common center of gravity like Pluto and Charon for instance. Sirius at only 8.6 light years away could have been traveled to by humans of Earth within a hundred years or so. I don't know how fast their arc ships actually traveled but I think by the year 2517 they had plenty of time to get there and establish a society. If the 'verse has multiple stars as some (like me) suggest, my next pick would be the multiple Xi Scorpii system, which has three F-type yellow-white stars, similar to Sol, albiet smaller, brighter and hotter, that are relatively close to each other - appx 42 to 320 AU's between them. The system has two other stars which two are F-type (orange) dwarfs, although 8000 AU's apart (only 0.13 ly), and at least a red dwarf as well. These could possibly hold planets. Only problem is Xi Scorpii is about 90.2 light years away and would take Humans an eternity to reach unless their arc ships, although sub-light, achieved speeds close to that of light. I think a ship could travel as much as 70% the speed of light before the effects of time-dilation and critical mass begin to affect the crew. At that speed it would take about 130 - 150 years or so to reach the system, and still give them about 250 - 300 years to terraform and establish a society there. That would also say they left Earth around the year 2093 - 2193 or so if they only had 200 years to set up society.

Life, the 'Verse and Firefly
Friday, 09 February 2007 15:46:05

So TamSibling has very politely ordered my to update my blog, and since I'm at work doing nada, I figured I would humor her. Let's see: I attended the Big Damn NonCon AKA Flan B AKA the Browncoat Backup Bash this past December. And it was AMAZING. Seriously, one of the best weekends of my life, and I'm incredibly grateful to Leiasky, Leighkohl, TamSibling and the evil D-Man for, well, everything. Where to start? I got to meet Tim Minear, which was pretty damn shiny since I'm sort of "in the awe" over him. ("Are you now or have you ever been...?" kind of blew my mind with the wonderful.) Also met Nathan, which didn't exactly suck either. ;) I hugged Alan (yay!), shook hands with Adam (that man is very tall!) and got a hug from Michael Fairman. Conversation with Michael~ TamSibling and I: We saw your Hallmark commercial and it was kind of disturbing, seeing you interact with a child. You are so scary on Firefly. (I'm paraphrasing here; I swear we sounded marginally cooler than this.) Michael: How often do you watch the episodes? Me: Way too often. Michael: Take a break. Put them aside for awhile, it won't seem so scary. Anyway, the whole weekend was wonderful and amazing and all that. I met some very cool Browncoats (no surprise there) that I have kept in touch with, and overall the experience was just very very shiny. LA was a great time--the whole city is full of Browncoats, right? That wasn't just for the Con, was it?--and I'm trying to move out there. I'll keep y'all updated on my progress. Love to all and all your wacky nephews. Kaynara

a weird dream
Friday, 09 February 2007 20:01:35

so, i had a weird dream. i was dating a guy and we're making ramen noodles...then it's the next day and my friend steve asks me about the guy. i said we just had dinner, then he asked more about the "dinner" but i couldn't remember. I was drugged by the blond shaggy haired boy i had dinner with. Nothing bad happened to me, just drugged. And when steve and i go to investigate. When we found the ramen noodles, they were bright pink, and apparently i didn't eat them. Odd. My dreams are always so strange. i don't know a blond shaggy haired boy and i most certainly don't eat pink ramen noodles.

And Now For Something Completely Different...the GBBC
Friday, 09 February 2007 21:57:34

But first...the Mom Update. Mom was feeling well enough to go out shopping earlier this week...and apparently overdid it a bit. The pain went back up, so the pain meds went up and that brough back some of the nausea. :crap: She's slowing coming back, though and felt well enough to talk on the phone for awhile yesterday. I'm staying down this weekend as I've another rutting cold which has decided my sinuses are a shiny place to roost. :knife: And now....the GBBC! Yeah, I'm gonna take a bit of time and space here to help plug something fun and free, but not FF/S related but if you like to watch the birds, this is for you. The National Audubon Society with Cornell University sponsers a yearly event in the US and Canada called the Great Backyard Bird Count. They are trying to get ideas of numbers and types of birds for well, every state and providence they can and they ask for the public's help in this. The event is next weekend (Feb 16-19, 2007) and open to everyone who wants to help. It only takes a few minutes (at least 15 minutes per day)to help out. Last year was my first time and I had fun...even when trying to count up the 2 dozen+ sparrows bouncing all over my balcony. I may resort to taking a picture and counting it as still life. More info is at this site:

Introduction
Saturday, 10 February 2007 22:21:28

Since this place is completely empty, I thought I'd try a log entry just to let people know who I am when I give opinions on their fanfic. A good friend has pointed out to me that all my crushes are smart men. While this is true, it's nobility that really gets to me. For example, I tend to follow Luke more than Han in Star Wars. It's probably already obvious that my favorite Firefly character is Simon Tam. The looks are nice but his capacity for self-sacrifice and his intelligence are what have me hooked. Since reading fanfiction has taught me that not everyone who loves a thing loves the same thing, I thought I'd be up-front about my own prejudices. Hey, we all have 'em and those that think they don't just aren't self aware enough to have identified their own. Well, that's my opinion for whatever it's worth. More later.

I'm so pumped for Drive...
Sunday, 11 February 2007 02:54:41

I think it's pretty cool that people actually read and commented on my last (and first) blog entry, as I don't have a terribly interesting life. Anyway... So, as the title of this entry says, I'm really excited for Drive. Nathan Fillion is an awesome actor and it'll be neat to see him in a new show. FOX better have the sense not to cancel it before the first season is even through! Apparently his indie film Waitress did really well at the Sundance Film Festival too, which is cool. I heard a rumor about a contest sponsored by FOX where you can send in an idea for a miniseries and they will actually make it into a miniseries. Has anyone else heard something about this, or is it just a rumor? My friends and I were going to submit something about Firefly for fun if it's an actual contest. Is it true that Joss Whedon dropped out of Wonder Woman???

Finally! I found them!

Cool Idea
Sunday, 11 February 2007 14:25:54

Yesterday I had a really cool idea. A mini statue of Joss, in the style of the Jayne Cobb statue in Jaynestown. I was discussing this with a couple people on World of Warcraft (one of my characters is part of a guild called Brown Coats, I actually convinced one of the guys to create an account here), everybody agrees it would be a cool idea. I'm thinking of taking a sculpting course this summer at the AGO and make my little Joss statue, I'll be sure to post pics.

Preparing for Valentine's Day
Sunday, 11 February 2007 16:19:46

Valentine's Day is almost upon us, and I don't have a valentine. What's a girl to do? Desperately search for someone for the day? Mope in her room with a box of chocolates? Sniff at those enjoying the holiday and complain that it's just a corporate marketing emotionally blackmailing people into spending money? Nope. Well possibly, but not me. Instead I chose to create Valentine's Day banners! Well what else was I going to do? I *had* planned to study since it's an expensive weekend to go out and I had an exam coming up, but now that that's over and done with I stayed in with not a whole pile to do. Creating banners seemed like fun. Therefore, I have a bunch of banners that I'll be posting in the blue sun room over the next couple of days. They're all free for everyone to use and, to be honest, they're all pretty simple, but I felt like spreading the love this year  Aside from that, my life is very quiet. Right now I'm figuring out what exams I should do next. I know, I know, I just finished a tough one... still, a teacher is only as good as what she can teach. So my choices are as follows: ECDL Advanced - which is pretty much the same syllabus as the MOS, so I'll try and get those done soon. ECDL Webstarter - a new qualification brought out by ECDL / ICDL in web design. It looks like fun! I have a little HTML knowledge so I'd like to give it a go. ECDL Imagemaker - like the webstarter, except in graphic design. Despite the banners and animations, this is a subject I know next to nothing about, so I'd love to try it and learn more. FETAC Computer Modules - Further Education and Training Awards Council, in case you were wondering. Unlike the others, these awards are recognised only in Ireland, but they usually translate easily to similar qualifications abroad. I'm still getting information on the different modules and what's involved, but I'm interested as it's the kind of stuff that could eventually lead to positions in lecturing at college level. That would be a long term project though! I sense lots of homework in the future... think I'll have some graphics / fic fun first... Happy Valentine's Day, all!

Mutterings
Sunday, 11 February 2007 22:47:27

Workin on the final installation of Union of Souls. Think Simon and Kaylee can actually survive long enough to finally get hitched? Also, just for some extra amusement, I am posting several photos of actors who play my original characters as I play out the story in my head. Any thoughts on better actors for the parts? I'm all ears for opinions.

Animated Short Nominees for 2006 Oscars
Sunday, 11 February 2007 23:47:42

Hey All One thing that I'm psyched about the invention of YouTube and BitTorrents is that stuff like the nominated shorts (animation, live action, documentary) are now more available than every. I finally got the chance to see about 3.25 of this years nominated animated shorts. I say 3.25 since one of them has about a minute of it on YouTube and isn't the complete one. Here are this years nominees for animated short. And this year has a really solid bunch. THE DANISH POET- This is one from the Nationa Film Board of Canada. The NFB is famous for it's animated shorts and documentaries, so it's nice to see one of their shorts nominated. Can't really comment on it since there's only like a minute of it available on YouTube. I posted the link to it for your enjoyment.

Best Day EVER!!!
Monday, 12 February 2007 03:10:54

Actually it was the best weekend ever. I went skiing this weekend for the Special Olympics practice weekend before the competition(in about a week and a half), I learned to Mono-ski, which is basically a seat, put on shocks with a shaped ski attached under the shocks. About three runs before I had to leave, TWO "ski bunnies" bumped into me, in the space of about five minutes! The mono-ski is a freakin' babe magnet, and a kick ass ride! For those of you who don't know already I'm paralyzed from the waist down, and use a manual wheelchair to get around on a day to day basis. Here's the general idea of what the ski looks like.

Sharing Time
Monday, 12 February 2007 07:58:23

Well, it's been a bit since a blog has gone up. I thought I'd do something a little different and, by a little prodding from a friend of mine and fellow writer (thank you Al dear ), post a few poems. Now these are older ones, mind you, so don't go thinking that my life is crazy or romantic like this. Honestly I'm creative, but very boring in real life, lol! I did post some of these a while back, but I can't remember which ones. I apologize a head of time for some of the over-dramatic nature of a few of them. Let's start with my fav. A poem I wrote a few years back about a good friend of mine. The Invisible You have a quiet way about you. You smile when no one is watching. You make me laugh when you think no one hears. You are more intelligent that you let on. You care more than you think. You dream more than we can imagine. You cry when no one is around. You think so little of yourself when you are so important. You hurt in the quiet depth of yourself. You hate injustice, but hide behind ignorance. You make sarcasm your mask. You feel more deeply than you portray. You think that no one knows your secret, But I do. I know the real you. A lil silly romantic poem written a little more recently. This was done for a competition. Yeah, I didn't win. First It starts with a thought. A wisp of an image, pass in the mind. A lightning glance. A biting of the lip. The quick glance away. An accidental brush. The tingle of impending touch. An embarrassed laugh. An unnecessary brushing back of hair. A half smile. A glance down. A walk away. The look back. A parting of soft lips. The escape of gentle breath. The expectation of voice. The realization of forgotten words. An extension of reach. The slight connection of finger tips. A final embrace of two waiting hands, Now inseparable... This one is a little darker. It was written to go with a story I heard on the news that broke my heart. I wish I could find the article, but it was several years ago. Memory Haunt In another time and in another place. In another mind and in another space. Sounds of open screaming and forgotten lands. Spills into the open like a broken hour glass with rushing sands. Why oh, why do you haunt me, torture me night and day. I have not forgotten, just make it all go away. Weeping and moaning and all the wretch of deep sorrow. Please, please, just let me go till tomorrow. Pounding of agony, screeching of dire need. Just put me out of my misery and make me bleed. No physical mouth to hush, no hands to clasp hold. Stop this, please stop for fear soon I may fold. Heart pounding hard and fast and mind about to break. The sounds of hell in my head now have put my life at stake. Unfinished business and restlessness air. Why did they have to die like that? Cause life is never fair. This was intended to be turned into a story, but like so many of my ideas, never made it to paper. It's 'bout forbidden love. Yeah, yeah, like there aren't a million like it out there, lol! This Dance Unspoken words whispered in glances between us. Hands brushing, fingers touching. Wanting we know of something we can't have. Don't make me want you. Don't smile the way you do. Your eyes beckoning to me sweetly. Telling me you want me to. Don't breath your warm breath on me, Whenever you hold me close. Sending lightning through my body. Making it hard to let you go. Fight me, hate me, Please make it impossible to want. I don't want to feel this way about you. This incredible haunt. Hands slid over my back as we dance. My head buried in your neck, resisting the chance. Just break our embrace and let me go. Because I'm not strong enough not to show. Push me away, please, I beg you. Don't tease me so. We can't hurt more than we silently keep. These sins we must hold within and bury them deep. But I know as well as you, we both want this to be. We both fight, we both entice, we can never be free. This dance we engage in will never bend. For the

It's Official. My brain is broken.
Monday, 12 February 2007 22:07:40

It's the crossover wot done it, guv. I'm fairly sure I'm not the first person to write a Firefly/CSI crossover, after all. Am I? I have come to the conclusion that my head is just...wrong. There are a finite number of things that you can put into one consciousness before you start giggling and dribbling and people take all your knives away. Luckily, I no longer have to face the public on a daily basis. It's just me, all on my own. Writing. Surrounded by a vast number of books, dvds and cds. Contamination was bound to occur. It's not like it was too much of a stretch to put the two ideas together, either. I have a perfectly logical process to link them. Unfortunately, I start to sound somewhat Riveresque when I try to explain it. Just think what could happen if I start drinking coffee again. After all, Joss Whedon wrote 'Toy Story', too. So, logically, that makes Mal Woody, and Jayne Buzz. And River must be one of those cute little green things with the three eyes... See? There's a reason I'm not allowed caffeine. Or sharp objects.

Been Busy
Tuesday, 13 February 2007 01:26:34

I haven't been on in a while but a lot has happened. I got a new laptop I am using right now for Christmas. I finally got a cell phone for my birthday (3 days ago!!!). I am leaving for Quebec on Febuary 18th and am staying there for four glorious days. I can't wait. I'm learning more Chinese everyday and watching Firefly faithfully. It's good to be back on FIREFLYFANS.NET.

At gunpoint
Tuesday, 13 February 2007 02:19:25

~Hey, I normally don't post on these things but I have to now. She literally has an imaginary gun to my head 5 states away :blast: :crap:. *sigh* I'm scared for my life. I don't know what to write, so I'll write this. There once was a man from Nentucket, He got his foot stuck in a bucket, He pulled and he pried, He tried and he tried, He finally said "Oh just... OW MY LEG!" I really have no idea what to write. OH!! Can I have a stalker? I've always wanted one. I'll take care of it. Walk it. Feed it. Even give a place to sleep at the foot of my bed. Please? Pretty please? Wow, ok. This is what you get when you force me to write a blog. People are going to look at this and say, "There goes Steve. He was sane once. But then he wrote that blog." Time to sign off and enjoy the comments. Oh I wonder what they will say. Perhaps they will tell me a way to keep the voices quiet, but I doubt it. -Steve-

Sorry
Tuesday, 13 February 2007 02:30:54

Ok, my first post was a bad joke. I'm sorry. So this will be the real thing. Right now in my life I'm pretty scared. I don't know what's going to be happening soon. I'm in the Air Force. We just got information that we're going to be deploying soon. Not we may or might, we will. As for actuall time? I'm not sure. I don't want to go to the desert. I've had training and all that. But I fix jets, I don't fight. I'm just pretty worn out recently. Work is riding me hard to finish my advancement training and testing. I don't really have time to do anything I want to do. I put on a strong face and smile so I won't alarm my friends and family. But I'm really scared. Last week I had to get my Mobility folder and passport information fixed and ready. It's not done yet so I'm getting into trouble with that. My Dog Tags that they didn't give me in Basic training are now ordered and here. I don't know. I think this is enought for a first real blog. I'll write more as the information gets to me. And remember, Even when things look their worst do what Firefly says, "When you can't run, crawl. And when you can't crawl, when you can't do that. You find somebody to carry you."

I'm not dead yet.

I feel happy! *fwang* Hmm. Haven't posted here in a REALLY long time. Like before Serenity came out. Does that seem right to you?

I HATE Valentines Day
Tuesday, 13 February 2007 09:41:33

How do Felt it was time for a Scrooge moment. I HATE Valentines Day. Whoever invented it was clearly a spiteful lil' f:censored:er. It's a middle finger saluted to everyone out there who's single: "Nobody loves you, you undesireable bastard! Ah-haha!" 20 god damn years I've had to put up with happy, loved up folks getting all smoochie with each other. Now don't get me wrong, finding love is the most beautiful, natural thing in the world. But on the 14th February every year, the happy folks take great pleasure in reminding all single people that we're lonely. It's a collective sucker-punch to the throat of us all. Not that I'm bitter, or anything.... Right, rant over. To all my fellow single people, let's have a wonderful day with that bottle of whiskey and ready meal for one. And to all you happy, attached and in love folks... Happy Valentines Day, tomorrow!

Deployment
Tuesday, 13 February 2007 20:55:42

I got the news today. If nothing changes anytime soon, I'll be leaving either next month or in April. To where? I'm not even sure. When they tell me, I'll be sure to tell you all as much as I can. Some things are more than likely going to be confidential. Thank you all for being so supportive. It means everything. -Steve-

worried
Tuesday, 13 February 2007 21:58:28

Worried about my best guy, Steven. He's deploying soon. He's worried. So naturally, I'm worried. He'll be okay, but i'm still worried.

Summer
Wednesday, 14 February 2007 14:47:21

I don't usually watch the Unit, but I happened to come downstairs last night and it was on, and who did I see on the screen? It was Summer! (Funnily enough, her name was Crystal. Apparently nature names are all anyone can come up with for her lol) Anyway, thought I'd share my experience, especially after a jumped up and down in front of the t.v. a bunch of times lol.

Life On Mars
Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:39:08

Hi there, I don't usually do blogs about TV shows but last night the new series of life on Mars started and it is one of my favourite ever TV shows. For those of you that haven't seen it, it's about a cop in 2006 who gets hit by a car and wakes up in 1973. Last night's episode was absolutely fantastic. Sam met a man in the past who he would later arrest in the future and who was trying to kill him in the future. The scene where everyone was taking the piss and singing the fairy liquid tune was hilarious. Gene Hunt may be the best TV cop ever created. He is just so funny. The lines he comes out with are some of the most hilarious things I have ever heard. The music is also fantastic. They actually use good music from the '70s not just the glam and disco-y stuff. Last series thye actually had a Uriah Heep song. And also stuff by Free, Lindisfarne, Slade, The Who. Music that I love. I'm just sad this is the last series. TTFN Jennifer -x-

First Fic
Thursday, 15 February 2007 13:54:11

Woo, go me, my first Fic, Once You Know, is up. For anyone who cares, I have a longish- probably a few parts - S/K fic. It's working title is Cup of Tea? and it's pretty much a lot of missing moments from the series, although it will disregard the movie. I'm also considering writing a sequel (or two) to Once You Know. Love to all, Charlotte xx

So once I get them I am gonna start to watch them. I am so excited!

May I Have a Boring Life, Please?
Friday, 16 February 2007 23:37:07

Ah, the fun just keeps coming. I was in an accident this morning. I was on my way in to work, shortly after 5am, and got a very nasty surprise of finding an entire wheel from a semi-truck partially in my lane. As the wheel was the same color as the asphalt on the highway (did I mention I was on an Interstate highway?) so as large as the sucker was, I couldn’t see it until it was about 10-15 feet from me, which is an insufficient amount of breaking time when one is doing about 65-70 MPH. I clipped it, fishtailed and stopped at the side of the road. Shortly after, I was joined by another car, two SUV’s and a flatbed truck. Fortunately none of us were injured and only one vehicle was drivable afterward (one of the SUVs). We got to wait for over an hour for the state troopers to come (only the state cops can write up accident reports on state roads) but had two ambulances for company. However, it was also about zero Fahrenheit with a wind chill of about -10. Fun, fun, fun. I couldn’t find my road service card, but fortunately did have all the other necessities for the trooper. He was kind enough to arrange towing for me and gave me a ride to work. I found out why it took so long for him to get there. There had been a large rash of accidents over night in the county, so we had ended up with low priority as there were no injuries and had to wait for the day shift to come on at 6am. I called my insurance agent when they opened and had a very stressful and bizarre conversation with the woman I spoke to. First she told me that they couldn’t waive the $500.00 deductible as I should have been able to avoid an object in the road. Then she encourages me to lie to the adjustor and say it came off a vehicle directly in front of me. About the only helpful thing she had to tell me was of a collision shop that would furnish me with a virtually rental while they worked on the car, and that the collision shop would bill the insurance company directly. So, after this I really began to stress out as I don’t have $500.00 unless I don’t pay…my utilities, the car payment or the insurance for the car and my apartment. (Oh, yeah, I still owe about 2 grand on this car.) Then I call the collision shop. Yes, they offer very cheap rentals for people who are having their cars worked on. That’s if the car is repairable. But, since things were jumping last night in the entire tri-county area, it took them until 4pm this evening to get the car there from the towing yard, so nobody can look it over until Monday. About this time I begin to worry about if I’m gonna get hit with towing costs and how much that’ll be. This was when I began to have a meltdown. Then one of the bosses called me into her office for a chat. She reminded me that, if necessary, it’s possible to borrow from my retirement account and pay it back through auto-deductions from my paycheck and then she gave me the phone number for the reps from there. This helped a bit as I remember I have enough to buy a new vehicle and then some, but really hate the idea of doing this, but at least I have a viable option that doesn’t involve borrowing from family and friends. One of my co-workers was kind enough to go hugely out of her way and drive me home today. I can’t say enough good things about her. I got home, and had a message from the insurance adjustor and called. She, unlike the lady in the agent’s office, was wonderful and extremely helpful. I explained what happened, and she immediately waived the deductible. She also told me not to hesitate to call if I get any medical issues that crop up from this. Then I made the really fun call…to Mom. Yep, freaked her out pretty well. (We’ve all been a bit touchy about auto accidents after my sister was killed in one a number of years ago.) So, just the sort of news she didn’t need right now. Isn’t it just lovely? The collision shop called while I was typing this. They didn’t get the car there until after 4pm, so it’ll wait to Monday.

I just wanted to inform my fellow browncoats and those that read my fanfics that I may post less frequently for about a month. I will write as often as I can, and even when I'm not on, I will try to work on my Mal/River series.

They said it couldn't be done...
Sunday, 18 February 2007 14:16:56

They were probably right. I've opened the door, now, you see. It was alright when I had the one little 'Verse under control (sort of). But now I've let the other ideas in. The ones that drink the good booze, and break up the furniture. My finely crafted and elegant little piece of witticism is becoming a shindig. Trying to shoe-horn two apparently incompatible fandoms together is difficult enough, without other random elements wanting in. How many films and tv shows can you rip off in one little fic? (Find out in the credits...) Still, very few folk seem to be reading or commenting anymore. It's a little disheartening. It seems that unless you are sailing a particular 'ship, nobody bothers. But until I get this out of my head, I can't really get on with the Original Book, so I guess you're all stuck with it. I mean, this isn't even the weird stuff yet.

Ok, first off, apologies to those reading "Even Roses Have Thorns" - I think my muse is on a serious bender this time. Also, I don't expect to have net access until next weekend, so there won't be a post until I get back - but hopefully there will be something to post.

Just over a week ago the snow lifted north of us for a morning. Since I really couldn't afford to miss another week of work, we threw everything we could in the cars, dug ourselves out, and bailed. We have been camping on the floors at my grandfather's house. The hot water heater apparently decided to die sometime before our arrival, but luckily I tossed some kitchen stuff in a 5 gallon brew pot, so we've been able to make water hot. We have heat and light. We do not have internet. We had a working toilet until this morning. :crap: We have no idea what's wrong, but the sink's been burping when you flush for the last two days. The vent is not blocked. We're hoping it's not the septic system. I'm up at the snowed in house today waiting for the crew as what's going to dig our roof out from under that which shall not be named and is measured in yards at this point. Doing laundry and laughing as warm water comes out of a faucet when you turn a knob. One of my cousins died Saturday. He was not quite 30. I don't know anything more other than services will be Friday in PA. At least I'm on vacation this week so *this time* I don't have to argue about whether or not I can have time off to go.

Jayne’s possible story line if “Firefly” was allowed to continue.
Monday, 19 February 2007 16:33:48

So, I decided to take Asian Religions this semester at my university because my public school education was very limited when it came to eastern cultures. I have already taken Western Civilizations my freshman year, so I felt I’d be wasting my time taking another history class like Eastern Civilizations. So, when it came time to pick a philosophy course, I thought that perhaps the best way to learn about a culture is through its religions, thus the Asian Religions course. (If I’m wrong anything in the fallowing on Jainism, please feel free to correct me. What can you really learn about a whole religion in a 50 minute class?) Today we learned about Jainism (pronounced like Jayne-ism), which some would say is sort of like a sister religion to Buddhism. The root for the name Jain comes from the Sanskrit word “jina” meaning “conqueror”. A jina is an enlightened being who has conqured material existence, and he/she is release from the cycle of rebirth and moves onto a higher spiritual level of existence. Jains don’t believe in a god, but a jina becomes something like a god, though no prayers or devotionals are offered up to them by mortals. Jains also believe in non-violence (which is a philosophy that influenced Mahatma Gandhi and later Martin Luther King, Jr.). Jainism was founded by a series of 23 tirthankaras, who are people who lived 2500+ years ago and became jinas. The most recent of these tirthankaras was a man named Mahavira (599-527 BC). The Sanskrit roots of his name are “maha” meaning “great” and “vira” meaning “hero”. (“Vira” is pronounced the way Jayne called his favorite gun, Vera. See the “Our Mrs. Reynolds” episode.) Jains are also vegans. So what does all of this have to do with our man Jayne? I’m thinking that Joss was planning something very interesting for him. I think he was going to make Jayne into some sort of enlightened monk or religious leader. I’ve learned in screenwriting that the most interesting stories are the ones where a character grows from one way of thinking into another. So, going from an uncivilized, violent mercenary to a non-violent monk does sound like an interesting storyline. Note that Jayne’s name and his gun Vera have root connections to Jainism. (“Vera” also comes from the Russian root meaning “faith”.) Knowing Joss’s practice of killing off his characters, Jayne might have been killed off in peaceful protest after reaching spiritual enlightenment. But we may never know that… Damn you FOX! Damn you to Hades! … [undistinguishable curses]… DEVIL NETWORK!!

New YouTube Video
Tuesday, 20 February 2007 00:13:06

I apparently have a bad habit of not letting terrible things die. Case in point: my latest contribution to YouTube. Yesterday, I took all the footage from the Beowulf movie I did in high school, and I mangled it into something you might consider avant-garde if you're on enough illegal substances. It's all really a lot of quick edits, reversed shots, and basically me saying "Look what I can do!" It takes a minute or so to really get going, but I think you'll get a laugh or two out of it.

All This and Hormones, too.
Tuesday, 20 February 2007 02:05:05

GAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!! I have a number of words for today...they're all :censored: Today is the day that the collison shop was suppose to look over my car and make an estimate, so I'd know if it's gonna be reparable and I can get a rental car thru them, or if it's totaled and I need to rent a car in the meantime on my own. I waited patiently. Stayed off-line (I'm on dial-up) except for 10 min this morning. I waited. Drank tea for my throat. Waited. Chewed my nails. Had my IBS kick up again. And waited. Finally at about 3:30/4pm I called. They "looked it over but still had to put it up on the hoist," but they'd call me after they did. This meant that hadn't even really looked and the :censored: thing yet. ARRRGGGHHH!!!!! So...I have no way to get to work by my start time tomorrow (6am) and will probably take a major hit on my record for calling in a day after I had a vacation day. PLUS I still have no idea what I'm gonna do for transportation to and from work. I called a friend of mine. She's gonna come over tomorrow after she launches off the kid to school to help me with this. But.... To rent a car, while you can pay with a debit card, almost all the rental companies around here still want a "real" credit card. Which I don't have as I've been trying to keep temptation away and not get myself loged so far in debt I can't get out. The company that will rent with either a debit card or a cash deposit, doesn't have anything available for another 4 days. At this point I just sat and cried. I have no idea what the f*ck I'm gonna do. I don't want to ask my friends to 'borrow' them and their card so I can get a rutting car, but it looks like I'll have to. And I know I'm a lot more overwrought about this than I normally would be as the hormone fairy is here and at that time, I overreact to the weather report. Well, I think I'm gonna play a bit to try to calm down so I can get to sleep as I'll need to get up early to call in and talk with my boss about the whole mess (she wasn't in on Friday) which will be a real treat. *sigh*

My ear hurts, yet again
Tuesday, 20 February 2007 17:32:50

Hi there, I seem to have picked up an earache; which is a little bit annoying. The last time I had one was five years ago and my right ear spent a week bleeding. Then I had to have yet another operation. Hopefully it won't be as bad this time as the consultant says it's starting to improve. Speaking of which, I'm back at the hospital on the 8th March. These appointments come around far too quickly. I saw a lad that was in the same year as me at school today. I went to the heritage centre to get a copy of the 1901 Thornley census and he was there with his police partner. He recognised me straight away but I could not for the life of me remmebr his name until he told me. It's Michael Cornforth. Well that's all really. TTFN Jennifer -x-

Well we finally saw it...the sun. It was amazing. It was all shiny and bright and warm. The sky was blue. It was really cool ( only because we've had either snowstorms or clouds for the last 2 straight months.) SO that was lovely. Of course it then promptly snowed the next day, but the sun was really nice there for a minute.

Thursday 2/22
Tuesday, 20 February 2007 21:43:51

Well my first blog entry and its gonna be a doosey! I stay away from most of the RWE Discussions because they all seem to end up as religious discussions. I used to love to get into those kinds of discussions. Not so much anymore. I was Baptised Catholic and as a child we did go to Church a little. As I grew older we went fewer and fewer times a year. As I reached my teens I began looking for a religion that made sense to me. I just could not understand how Someone/Something so powerful could be so ruthless and cruel, unforgiving, and down right sinister. Yeah I know that I will probably be flamed for that sentance but it is my blog so if you don't like what I have to say then just take a walk! Anyway, I have looked at Catholicism and Christianity. I have been an Atheist and Agnostic. I have looked at Wicca, Buddhism, Taoism and quite a few others. All trying to find something that made absolute sense. You know what there isn't one. They all make sense. None make sense! It all comes down to belief (or that is what they tell me). One must have Faith that there is a God. One must believe in a Higher Power. So Thursday is my Sister's Birthday. She would have been 35. You see she died may 10, 2006. She was 34 years old and she died! She was struggling to support her 14 and 10 year old sons because her deadbeat husband (that she was seperated from) was in prison and she died! She was just getting ready to attempt College to better support her sons and make a better life for herself and she died! She had just gotten engaged to a good person and she died! It was 2 days after her oldest son's birthday and she died! It was 4 days before Mother's Day and she died! The list goes on and on but it all ends the same.... AND SHE DIED! So I have a new take on Religion and I am sure that it will end me in Hell. I HOPE that there is a God. I don't believe and I don't have Faith; I hope. I so want to meet this person. I want to walk right up to Him/Her and look Him/Her in the eyes.... and I want to kick the living (or dead (whatever)) shit out of Him/Her for what He/She did to my nephews and my family and too her. I can't believe in God or have faith because there is no way that God would do this to those boys or my parents or my little sister and brother. So I have to Hope that He/She exists and that I will get to meet Him/Her someday. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest. Now back to our regularly scheduled fun!

I'm a new convert. My brother has Firefly and Serenity on DVD and he let me watch them last week. Now let me tell you that I am a HARDCORE CSI fan. I've been watching CSI for nearly four years. I love all the fictional crime shows. But I didn't even get through the first episode on the first disc before I almost as deep in love with Firefly as I am with CSI. I say almost cuz I've loved CSI for years. And then my brother filled me in on what had happened with Fox and the idiots over there and I was :pissed:!

River and Jimmy sitting in a ship Nah but seriesly - i hope people like the gradual love interest im building up between River and Jimmy I showed in episode 2 showbiz that Jimmy has feelings for River despite been an insane psychopath with killer instincts. I think its a good match although I admit I hate all the fics involving a love interest for River E.G. Jayne - shudder, Simon - better but still perverted, Mal - urh didn't the writers even bother to watch the sereis and movie? his love interest is Inara always!, or a new charater who is a psychic around Rivers age and is another escapee from the acadomy - Hate beyond anything else. However just to clarafy - my charater is not from the acadomy - hes from a different Alliance project and he isn't a psychic either. this brings me to the end of my rant with only this to say PLAY WITH THE BEST DIE LIKE THE REST

Hi, I am new.
Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:58:31

Hello everyone. I am new to the site (kinda new to firefly too). I heard about the series ages ago, but had a difficult time tracking it down in Oz. I saw the movie when it came out (the trailer was fantastic and the movie great - of course the TV series is so phenomenally great that I doubt much would even be able to be compared to it). I was saddened to find out I only have a few episodes I can enjoy, and it just reinforced my view that Rupert Murdoch is THE DEVIL! :fork: I chose TrueBlue because: 1) I am intrigued with the concept of Blue Sun, and 2) I am an Australian.

Firefly found
Thursday, 22 February 2007 01:48:33

Of course I had to see the movie - didn't even know a series ever existed. But after seeing the trailors on TV, the movie was an obvious must see. There wasn't an aspect about it that wasn't impressive, from the graphics, to the characters - and - GOOD GRIEF! - what a story?!?! -- I had to own it as soon as it came out on DVD -- then my husband hit me with the astounding news that there had been a series and we could get the ENTIRE THING on DVD!!! Yup, I've worn them out. :) I don't know what planet I was inhabiting at the time to NOT know about the series, but I didn't. And come to find out, other passionate scifi people I know also were likewise ignorant. How on earth could it not be a HUGE hit?! I hope somehow it can come back.

best day ever. -_-
Thursday, 22 February 2007 03:34:36

Okay, so. Today started out as a good day. I wasn't tired when I woke up, which is good. I go to my one class and then come home. Thinking, Oh. I love Wednesdays, one class and then i can spend the rest of the day doing whatever. So, today, i decide to clean, because I couldn't leave because some guy was coming to fix the garage door. So i'm cleaning and being productive when I realize. Ew. The cat litter box is disgusting and needs to be clean right away. So i do it. I take the trash bag out to the trash cans in my shed, which is directly behind the garage. Little did I know that the cursed door (from the garage to my house) closed behind me. Yeah. I was locked out. Not cool. -_- I had no key and no cell phone with me. I mean, seriously, that door is never locked during the day. The ONE time it is, I get locked out. *sigh* So I go next door to borrow their phone. I can't remember my father's cell phone number (his work is cloest to my house), so I call my mom asking her to call my father to ask him to unlock the house for me. I can't get a hold of her. So i decided. Hey, my brother has his key. I'll go to the high school and ask him for it. I get to the school, which, luckily for me, is only two blocks away, and I get all these weird looks from all the kids there and finally find my brother. I get keys! So after a cold, and wet morning. I get home. Then 30 minutes later my brother calls to get picked up for lunch from school and we get burgers and he buys. Haha. So the day wasn't completely terrible, but i do not want to repeat that again. I mean, I never leave my house without keys, I go to do something good, like throwing out the trash and wham, locked out. *sigh* Well, you can't have good luck all the time. At least the garage got fixed. Wow, this was a long entry.

So yeah, the Oklahoma Blood donor people came to my base today. I always give blood since I'm a universal donor. (Means everybody can recieve my blood, but I can only get my type. O neg) As a little background info, my veins are extremely hard to find. After they poked my finger to test my iron (perfect ~_^) They take me over to the chair to draw my blood. They sit my down and look at my left arm. They can't see any veins so they put a strap on my upper arm to force the veins to pop out. Nothing to see. They felt around my arm and thought they found one, but it had a pulse (It was an Artery, they can't use those) They switch to my right arm. They think they found another one. So they poke me... Nothing came out. They twisted and moved it around for a while. For those of you that have never given blood. Moving that needle when it's in you HURTS! They figured that nothing was going to come out of that arm so they went back to the Artery side. They decided that the artery could be under the vein... it was a risk they were willing to take. Long story short, shorter than it could be I should say. I have/had 2 colored bandages on both of my arms. I'm woozy from the loss of blood and I can't lift my arms above my head. And with that last note of interest, I am going to bed. I'll post how I feel in the morning/after work tomorrow. Have a goodnight and sweetdreams to you all. -Steve-

Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:10:00

Hi there, Today I had to go to the Palace Green Library in Durham to do notes for my dissertation so I went out for the 10am bus. Except it didn't turn up. So I had to wait for the next one so I waste an hour that I could otherwise have been making notes. The same thing happened last Friday. My Russian Revolution seminar started at 2pm so I went out at 12 and the bus to Durham didn't turn up then either. I had to get a bus to sunderland and then get the Metro to Newcastle making me 15 minutes late. I swear down if I could get away with boycotting the service I would but I depend on it far too much. I'm not taking any chances tomorrow so I'm going straight to Sunderland. TTFN Jennifer -x-

Don't Slump! It's bad for your posture!
Friday, 23 February 2007 04:09:49

It's been a while, I know, and I've been promising an update to Legacy for more than a month, now, but I must admit, I've been distracted. On the one hand, my student loan has come in (thus sparing the people at the student loans office a fate so much more horrible than death as to not properly be classified as such without an asterisk beside it leading to a great deal of grisly fine print). That's a good thing, as I can now afford to pay both rent and my tuition. On the other hand, midterms. Gack. Not that I'm any sort of slacker (snirk) but this time of year has me burned out at the best of times. Now, though, it's reading week, so all I can do is stress and worry whether I've learned the right material for the tests which await. And I should mention that I don't deal with stress well; my bodies first reaction to stress is to completely shut down my immune system. My body is stupid. On the other other hand... I have three hands? I should get that checked out... Medication got bumped up again, and now I'm literally having to beg for freebies from the doctor because my 'student health plan' doesn't deem antidepressant medication a vital medicine. Pain in my ass. On yet another hand (whoa, jeez, I'm up to four!), I've hit a bit of a bit of a dry patch with my writing, which caused the aforementioned one-month delay in the most recent update of the Legacy saga. The new chapter's pretty much done, but it needs some tweeking before I'll be happy with it. At least I'm fairly sure this'll be the last episode which is intended exclusively for set-up. After this, it's just a row of ADHD monkeys flinging crap at a fan showcase. I'm just rambling now, I'm tired, it's midnight, and I still don't know if my meds are working. So, I suggest you all go read Legacy (what, am I not allowed to shamelessly plug on my own blog?), and leave this cantankerous, 21-year-old fart to go to sleep. (Go read Legacy. This is a subliminal message. Really. Can't you see how subliminal this is?)

I'm going to take some time away. I've gone away before and returned...hopefully I won't be gone for good. I just need time away from some of the attitudes here. This isn't just RWE stuff. Things just aren't the same and I haven't changed with them. I don't know if I'm stuck in the 'good ol days' or what. See ya round. Bye.

The new year came and went.... and now it's almost Spring.

Ye gads, I just noticed that I've been on FFF for a year now...shininess!! And after a long and painful absence, I'm back and...well, won't say better than ever, 'coz far behind me now are some of the finest Browncoats in the 'verse. :disappointed: Can only hope that ahead of me lie some equally fine folk in the New England Browncoats chapter. Un-freaking-believable, though, how little downtime I've had over the past month and a half - getting a new job, finding out that I got it only two ruttin' weeks before ground school was due to start, turning in notice at my old job and residence, packing up, moving back to NH, attending another two weeks of ground school for a regional freight railroad, being called to work immediately thereafter, training on the job and finding a place to live, which has taken up the last three weeks... I'm about ready to plop back and relax with my DVD set and some cider (not drugged, plzkthx). BUT I ain't even done moving in, wouldn'tcha know. Anyway, look for the return of the Burma-Firefly icons some time in the next couple of weeks. And, hopefully not too long after, a complete rewiring and repost of a newly complete and newly betaed (courtesy of KayleeGirl) 'When in Rome'! Keep Flying, - Steemah

Digging through the pieces...
Saturday, 24 February 2007 04:34:09

So, um, okay, I received lots of wonderful comments that made me feel all warm and squishy inside on the "Digging..." set, but honestly, folks, I didn't mean for it to be as long as it is. I'll see what I can do, but I only ever want to put up things I'm proud of, and I thought I was done with the "Digging Through Dreams" piece...but I'll see what else I can come up with. You people are all so...uplifting. I'll write for you...when I get the inspiration. Thanks from the deepest wellspring of my heart!

The Crow: Serenity -- Title kinda speaks for itself, a Crow/Serenity crossover. It starts from the Pilot, Simon's attempt to rescue River goes horribly wrong, she escapes, but he is murdered. As a precaution, the entire Tam family is massacred. The Crow brings Simon back from the dead to get revenge on those responsible. There will also be a Simon/Kaylee love plot; Simon will be torn between his desire for vengeance and his feelings for Kaylee. Also the fact that he is a living corpse might be a factor. Broken -- Set after 'The Job', a previous series of mine, the Crew find an abandoned ship and on it is a 19-year-old slave named Ash Mercer being shipped back to his (physically, mentally and sexually) abusive owner after running away. He finds a home on Serenity and at first River is confused and annoyed by him. But the pair grow close, connected by the pain they have endured, and pure, beautiful love blossoms. I plan a gag where Ash has been ‘pleasuring himself’ while thinking of River, not knowing that she is psychic and *very* aware of his activities. I also plan to bring back the beloved Taylor Brandon for a very large cameo. A terrifying virus outbreak on Vermillion triggers Taylor to call the best available Doctor, Simon, for help. He, of course, obliges and the Crew stays there for a while. Ash will be portrayed by Garrett Hedlund, who I am a little in love with. For those who don't know of Garrett, I pity you. I have a couple more brewing in my brain, but nothing well planned.

Trying to be Helpful -- The Alt Commands
Saturday, 24 February 2007 19:35:50

I don't know if this has been done before, but I'd figure I'd post them because some of them are interesting. I think there's the Greek alphabet, and useful symbols for math and languanges, but most of the others seem silly (unless everything but your numbers and Alt key stop working, and you need to type something ). ::shrugs:: Oh, and apologies if they're too small, or the columns don't come out like I wanted them to. I'll try to fix those after I save this entry. EDIT: It's fixed the best I know how. The discrepencies in column alignment come from different symbol and number sizes. For the less technologically savvy, I'll do my best to explain how these work. To make those symbols appear, one holds down the Alt button (usually next to the spacebar on either side) while typing the number. It's like holding Shift down to type a colon (:), capitalize letters, or enclose things with parenthesis. (Oh, and it works better if you use the number keypad to the side - or the fn button, found on some laptops.)

confessions/digressions
Sunday, 25 February 2007 01:32:11

Dear bloggers, First of all its time I confessed. I admit that I sometimes operate under two other names here on this site. I'll tell you guys if you're interested. But, just so you know...... Anyway, for those of you who are interested, I made it through last semester's final projects and have since moved on to student teaching this semester. At a real school no less. It's fun, challenging, stressful, rewarding. I've never had a job that inspires me as much as playing live music. They are similar in that both situations can raise the hair on the back of my neck and forearms. When kids get it, its really cool. Admittedly, sometimes it sucks and I feel like a disciplinarian, but I'm keeping my head above water. What do I teach? English. One day I realized that reading was good for my mind, and I ran with it. Lately I've been teaching John Steinbeck and John Hersey. There is hope for Earth if kids can understand these guys and relate. Just my two cents. TurquoiseBoat (on a turquoise sea)

First-ever blog entry!
Sunday, 25 February 2007 02:21:09

To blog or not to blog, that has been the question. I'm still not sure why anyone does this, but maybe by doing I'll discover the answer. Be warned -- most of this stuff will probably be about writing because, well, I'm a writer and I love the whole creating new worlds in words magic that goes along with that. I can't believe that I finished my first FF fan fic in January and STILL haven't posted it! Steamer was kind enough to Beta for me and I have some other writer and non-writer freinds who've given me good feedback. So why have I left it in limbo? Okay. Confession: after reading the thread on how to format it, I got a bit overwhelmed. I want to be sure that I link the parts together to make it easy for people to read and now I find out that I can do a thingie where the translations for the Chinese will pop up -- very, very shiny but...now I have to go back and be sure I've got the translations right. Am I wrong to fear that when I post it'll end up like some crazy wingding mess instead of a story? Am I too much like Adrian Monk (not entirely with-it and too OCD trying to make it perfect)? Yes. Maybe. I don't know. Can anyone say "procrastination?" WWJD? (He'd already have written two or three more FF stories by now most likely!) As usual, I'm probably being too hard on myself. After all, I have a job and a bit of a life outside work and this is just fanfic, right? Yes, but...I have this crazy dream that one day Borders will have shelves of FF novels crowding out the Star Trek books AND that my name will be on some of them. So, I do take this fanfic seriously. Call me a crazy Browncoat. (Which I wouldn't mind at all!) On a new tangent: I get so excited whenever I see the commercials for "Drive" and Nathan Fillion's face on the TV again! I'll be glued to my set for all two episodes that F*x runs before they cancel yet another fine show. That's all for now gentle readers. Luv ya all!

Death is too kind
Monday, 26 February 2007 00:37:24

I want to kill Betsy, Edgar, and Jackie, from my work. Why you might ask? 1. Betsy did nothing all day. 2. Edgar didn't even try and make her do anything. 3. Jackie called sick at the last minute, last minute being 10 minutes into her shift. 4. Edgar and Betsy where sucking face half their shift. 5. Edgar and Betsy blamed ME for nothing being done today, WHEN I COVERED THEIR ASS. 6. Betsy doesn't even know how to run the register properly. Death is too good for them.

Silly Stuff added to my site

Yeah, yeah, I know... *all* the stuff on my site is silly. But I now have a page for extra silly stuff. Mostly for anti-troll banners, but also for the occasional funny banner that can be useful in a heated thread. Like these ones:

Jobs
Monday, 26 February 2007 16:28:29

Okay. Put three job applications in. Hopefully they'll hire a part time worker who goes to college. lol. I really need the money. My iPod is now offically dead (but that's not surprising, it's an older model and those had some kind of problem anyway). And now my computer is failing. I need to replace it, and believe me, if you saw this thing, you'd know. I had to buy it through my old university. *sigh* it's a good idea for that school to say that a computer is required, but as soon as you leave the university (like me) you have all their crap on there, no service and you're stuck with a piece of crap computer with little to no memory and is so slow it's painful. Anyway. I need this job, because I need money. That's it. *sigh* Money why must you be so evil.

February isn't the coolest month... never has been and probably never will (it just cant compete with May, June, July, August or even December)It is a bit boring... the only thing it has going for it is that its short and that it sometimes has a day extra. (the reason every person born February 29 gets asked if they really do have birthdays every year or only every fourth year)Its cold, its icy, windy and dark... Leaves me with next to nothing to say... I saw Dexter the other day, the show about the crime scene investigator that is a serial killer on the side. That was interesting. I wonder why no one has made a show like that before, cause sooner or later in every cop show or csi type show they say they could be the best criminals... And the holier than thou attitude of so many cops on TV should have pushed them over the line a long time ago. Its interesting having to sympathize and empathize with a guy like Dexter. A guy only guided by rules hes been taught and no moral or feelings.

Engagement & Fan fic
Monday, 26 February 2007 23:52:19

Hello, fellow browncoats! I know it's been awhile since I've been on. But i just wanted everyone to know that I just got engaged to a wonderful woman. We're planning to be married at the beginning of June. Unfortunately, since we live so far away from each other, my motivation over the last few months hasn't existed. Which is why I haven't added any content, or haven't been on the boards lately. I have been working on the latest chapter of my fanfic, it's just been a slow process. But keep a look out for it, and I hope to have it finished soon. Till next time!

Where we left off. Me having to call in after having a vacation day. Talked with my boss, all is okay at the moment. Rental car. Most of the rental companies here want a real credit card before they'll rent you a vehicle. I only have a debit check card. the few that didn't have hissies about that, didn't having anything available. My friend (God love him...he's a sweetie) put the car on his card for the week and I paid him back in cash. The car is costing $180 per week. I can't afford to keep doing this. Car goes back tomorrow. Tomorrow I bid my fond farwell to my car, Serenity. Yep, she's been totaled by the insurance company. Seems in and amongst other things, both tie rods on the front right got bent and such and there's a few expensive parts that may have gotten taken out by it, but was cost prohibitive to check without it actually being worked on. I discovered this last friday when I went in to the collision shop to ask for a copy of the estimate. Found out that I got there just after the adjustor called. That was the first day someone actually looked at my claim at the insurance company as things were backed up due to lots of claims from weather-related things. I tried to call the adjustor on friday from my friend's home and got his voice mail. Played phone-tag with him again today until he called again (by mistake it turned out...he thought he was calling Chicago. These people worry me.) the upshot is I'm gonna get about $600...the other $2100 goes to pay off the bank on the loan still outstanding on her. (Found out my insurance agent didn't list the lien on the car in the records. That was a fun conversation with the adjustor.) I do still have another vehicle ("Spike" yes, I name all my cars)...which is not running. $600 isn't enough to fix him, either. What I'm gonna need to do is borrow against my retirement account which I hate to do, but at least I'm paying myself interest and not some ruttin' banker-type. (apologies to any browncoats in the banking industry) Tomorrow the rental goes back, I need to clean out my dead car (and try to pop the antenna ball off that I pretty much glued on last month), fax and mail the car title to the insurance, call the bank and apprise them of what's going on so they'll talk to the insurance company. So, what am I doing for transportation? It seems my brother and his wife are going to Florida to visit her folks for a week. I get their car in the meantime. Yea! One less week to pay for a rental. I still also need to get the other car to a repair shop (Anyone know of a reputable repair shop in the western Wayne/eastern Washtenaw area?) after I get money from a loan, have the insurance on it changed from storage to full coverage and hope it gets fixed soon. My car is not the only one who's a wreck right now. *sigh* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mom Update Mom is getting worse. She still hasn't bounced back from the overeating episode a few weeks back and I've only spoken with her twice in the past week as she hasn't felt well enough to talk. She's had to cancel two appointments with the doctors (over an hour away) as she's not doing well enough to go (the hospice nurse was in agreement.) They're gonna up the long-term pain meds in hopes of cutting down the short-term ones. They're also checking for a doctor who is willing to make housecalls. I really need to get up there again soon. I haven't been there in over a month. *sigh* Thanks to all you shiny folks for your support. *hugs* RMMC

Holy Crap

So I am perusing the wonder that is YouTube, listening to some music from the 80's and I happen upon Warrant. Just for a goof, I start looking on the net and I find out the Jani Lane was married to one of the girls I went to school with. WTF! How does that happen. I gotta get me arse in gear. Anyway, Rowanne whereever you are, I need my English text book back!

Heya's!
Tuesday, 27 February 2007 10:53:02

Well I found this website. Very intriguing. I've seen the site before, but I have never signed up until just now (cannot enter my mind why not, it being so shiny)and I thought I would add some pieces to the already fabulously decorated graphics section. So far i'm happy with the response of my additions to the Blue Sun Room, and I plan to create more in the future. Maybe some of the crew. However right now, I am in love with the ship. That's all I need to say at the moment. Some last words: Huzza for moderately priced champagne (pronounced: Sham-pag-in in this context). See you all around!

New on board
Tuesday, 27 February 2007 14:21:06

Seeing as this is my first day around I should probably write a bit more about myself and how I got here. But I'd like to make myself comfortable first, so bear with me and the fact that it'll take a moment or maybe two. Other than that - I'm surprised on how dedicated everyone seems to be. I'll be curious to find out more.

February
Tuesday, 27 February 2007 18:01:16

Hey All I can say for certain that this February has been without a doubt one of the busiest February's in a long time. At the beginning of the month, I had to babysit Matt before he left for Afghanistan for good. He had been ping ponging between here and Gaguetown for months, and so by the time he left for good, our attitudes to each other were "screw you". After that, I kept getting calls from relative asking me if I had heard from Matthew and all that. Started to get a little sick of it, to be honest. And I also had to pick up my folks from the airport yesterday. In my film class, we finally shoot OUT IN THE COLD for a measly 25% of our mark. I was the locations department, and in four days, got only four hours of sleep at a time. On the first day, my feet were soaked from trudging through the snow for hours to set up this huge 20ft by 20ft tent. On the second day, I had to empty out a mud pit that had formed in the tent due to the space heaters. On the third day, due to a freak snowstorm I had to literally hold up one of the sides of the tent for 45 minutes straight. And on the fourth, I was on call for 17 hours straight. We had a little wrap party the night after, and it was the first time I was consciously drunk. I should remember that for when we're working our asses off on our final projects. After that, my computer starting acting up again, and in an attempt to not take it to get cleaned at a computer place and save money, I ended up completely wiping my hard drive. I've spent the last two day rebuilding my computer. Luckily, I had e-mailed some of my more important files to others and myself so I was able to salvage a few files. My downloads on the other hand I have to start all over again. And I still need to install Studio 9 back on there. I also ended up having to buy Office 2007 and update my computer again so that it would run. And this morning, I had to call some roto-rooter guys to come in to unclog the sewage pipes that was making sewage come out of the basement shower. When they left, I still had to clean up the small pile of crap that was at the bottom of the shower. Just turn the water on to get most of it, and whatever was left I got with a towel. And March isn't going to be any better. It'll be massive assignments from here on till mid April. I'm praying for mid-April to come so that I can go home to the farm and work for three weeks to alleviate the cash I've been hemmoraging. I'll be lucky if I don't end up fat(ter) and broke in 7 weeks. On another note, this girl I've been talking to and hanging out with for a few weeks now has told me that she's not looking for a big relationship at this point since she's going back to Saskatoon in a month, so I have to start up all over again on Cupid.com. And while I was glad to see Marty finally win for Best Director, I was kinda hoping for a Best Picture win for BABEL. THE DEPARTED is a really good film and all that and I didn't scream at the tv this year when it won like I did last year when CRASH won over BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. But while THE DEPARTED was a really good, entertaining flick, BABEL had that slight edge over it that made me want to see it win more. Than again, as I grow old I'm starting to get more apathetic towards the Oscars. I'm starting to care less over them. Oh well, gotta get back to work.

parent teacher conference
Tuesday, 27 February 2007 20:50:52

Ok so here is my question....why? Why do we set aside a night or several night and put the teachers all in one location so that parents can come and talk to them?? Mostly what happens is, the parents of the good students come and hear over and over "what a great kid you have" while the parents of the students who are failing never come. Obviously these ( the parents of the failing kids)are the parents we want to talk to but never get to. So what is the purpose of this activity? I really think it's a hold over from the 50's and 60's when stay at home moms were more prevalent and they wanted to do the whole meet and greet thing with the teachers..we really need to come up with something like parent teacher email night...oh well just my little rant as I really don't want to sit here at school for 4 and 1/2 hours for the 9 parents who actually show up.

River's warning!
Wednesday, 28 February 2007 10:01:01

Got home from college, and i'm bored stiff (not in that way ladies). So I thought, lets make a wallpaper. Racked my brains for something to do, and remembered one of my fave quotes from the series. Took like, half an hour to make. Pretty simple stuff. But it says what I feel. Although i'm blocked as to what I should make next. Ideas would be greatly appreciated. Until then, adios amigos. (Wish me luck in my future endevours)

How I got around to being here
Wednesday, 28 February 2007 11:40:47

Wanted to write about this yesterday and, of course, didn't. But now is as good as any time. Along with that I should probably take the time for a couple of words on my person. It's way less strange then to read about why I'm actually here. So, first for the rough details. I'm 27 years, going 28 this April, live in southern Germany. I study English and spend most of my time online. Why? Because I have no friends? Hardly. But because currently it is one of the few medias I can actually graps. Sounds strange, is that way though. I happen to be visually challanged / all the way blind (depending on the legal system you're in - they've got all sorts of funny definitions on when a person is actually considered to be blind). Other than that I work at a DVD rental place to make some extra money during semesters. Which is real fun with people rarely even noticing that there's something not quite the way it should be. I'm stealthy like that. *g* Firefly. During the past couple of years I've heard rumors about the show. Nothing much. Couldn't get a hold of it for the longest time, mainly because I wasn't trying hard enough. The show just wasn't on sale anywhere near me - and back then I honestly didn't think about amazon. No idea why. Then the movie came out and a friend of mine had me watch it. At the time, not having seen the series before, it didn't make much sense to me. I basically shrugged it off. A couple of months back though a friend of mine - with whom I do a lot of roleplaying (one of my main hobbies) told me about the show again and how great it was and that I should honestly give it another shot. Best advice I've ever gotten out of a person thus far. So during a stay in Dublin I picked up the DVD box as well as the movie, seeing as they had it on sale there. Ha! As soon as my trip ended I sat down and watched what I'd gotten. And got hooked. And read up on the 'verse. Ordered every book that there is (eventhough I can't read them *g*) and did some research on browncoats and the like. In the end I was asking myself - how the hell do you actually become a browncoat? Better yet, let the other browncoats know that you're there! So I stumbled around on www.browncoats.com and eventually found my way here. Lots of stuff, lots of people - who strangly enough are all sorts of friendly. Odd. I should give it a try! And I did. So... Now I'm here, trying to get to know a couple of you. Funny thing is... Usually I'm known for being either very easy to have around - or for being the most arrogant person around (that is if you don't make the effort to actually read _exactly_ what I'm writing - people get confused so easily). Only here things seem to be all different. Well, I guess we'll see how that pans out. Curious to get to know more. Always curious about the folks around. First day on board has passed now. And I keep on flyin'.

Joss Whedon Is My Master Now
Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:30:12

I happened to stumble across ThinkGeek last week and found out that they sell t-shirts with the actual slogan "Joss Whedon Is My Master Now!" across them. What more could I ask for? It totally made my day, so I ordered a couple - one for me and one for my best friend's birthday - and they arrived on Monday! It made me so happy, I'm wearing mine now and I can't wait to wear it out and about, and see if anyone acknowledges it. In a fellow Whedon-fan way, not in a "you're really pathetic" kinda way. Jen (aforementioned best friend and fellow Browncoat) was all excited for me when she found out about it, and I bet she's thinking of getting one herself. So I'm really looking forward to giving her her presents (which I'll do as soon as the last little thing arrives) and see her reaction. It will be a good day :-D

A rather sad realization...
Wednesday, 28 February 2007 15:25:31

As I type away on my laptop, my wife lies next to me, begging and pleading to read my little screenplay. I've told her repeatedly that it's nearly finished. And now, it just about is. I'm actually quite saddened by this prospect. I've poured so much time and energy into this project, I hate to let it go. I'm not sure if I'll do any continuation once the credits have rolled, but we'll see. I'll be posting the next chapter soon. Many thanks to all those who've taken the time to read and comment on my work. Or play, really. It's more fun than anything. Rob O.

Wednesday, 28 February 2007 23:56:09

(posted on myspace) I have a potential date on Saturday, with someone I have never met. I do not like to be looked at. This may pose a problem.
