6ixStringJack: And then, because I didn't want to get on a roller coaster I wasn't going crazy with the insulin but I wasn't giving myself enough either. Ended up being over 200 for a few hours after that one and didn't get it back under complete control until I got home in the wee hours of the morning. Oops!

6ixStringJack: I'm still going to use the pods as long as I've got them, but I don't think it would be the worst thing in the world for me not to have them either. I was just out with some friends the other night and in the middle of helping one of them with some computer stuff and I mindlessly grabbed some popcorn from a bowl they had out while doing it and not even thinking about my numbers... All the sudden I checked my sugar about an hour later and I was 182 and it took me a minute to figure out how the hell that happened. I forgot I even ate that popcorn and it was one of those half/half mixes out of a tin that had the caramel stuff in there too, which I don't even really like. I guess I was just hungry and did it without thinking.

6ixStringJack: I will request another thyroid when I see my primary again. May as well as long as I still have the insurance for sure. I'd hate to ever imagine having both of our problems at the same time. Oy... Good advice though, thanks. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.04 03:57
6ixStringJack: Yeah... Second more or less chased me out of the Garden with his constant stalking. At least I get where Ted is coming from. I know he liked posting his pictures here, but he can't find a way to share the space together. I don't know if you saw him tell me something along the lines of "I can have you" in the Second thread last week when you didn't "take his side". I told him that throwing out ultimatums on people like that is not only childish but it never works out the way you want it to. I still hold out hope that he'll come around.

Brenda: I'm not too bad. So far no smoke down my way. I just hope it doesn't arrive and if it does the ocean breezes do their job. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.04 03:52
Brenda: Well, that is your choice of course. But I think they are more help. But just my opinion. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.04 03:52
Brenda: Yes, it can and I think the next time you are at your doctor's or talking to him. Ask about having your thyroid checked again. Just a good precaution I think. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.04 03:51
Brenda: Nope, this like the seizures were caused by the tumour and the surgery to remove it. I may have been experiencing things when I was in high school and such but didn't know what was what. So the surgery may have just acceralted all of that. Hard to say. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.04 03:49
Brenda: Oh, no. I am sorry about that. So much for constructive conversation. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.04 03:47
6ixStringJack: How you doing today? Keeping out of the smoke, I hope.

6ixStringJack: And, counter-intuitively, I think the pods actually have done a disservice to me. It made things too easy. I'd probably be better off actually if I weren't using them. Okay. I wanted to reply one last time about my stuff since you had things out there that needed responding to. But I'm done talking about my personal issues until the creep stops being a creep. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.04 02:08
6ixStringJack: And I did get my thyroid checked while they were testing for diabetes. At least then, my thyroid was fine. Who knows these days though. Anything could break at any point, right?

6ixStringJack: About yours though... were you born with it and did you get this training as a young child growing up? There's a lot to say for that. Old dogs tend not to learn many new tricks unless they're forced to. Begrudgingly, I've gotten pretty good at it but only because of what the alternative would have been had I not. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.04 02:05
6ixStringJack: Ted is taking what I say here and using it in his attack posts on me, Brenda. Sadly, I think this is where our health discussion needs to end because Ted is a creep. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.04 02:04
Brenda: I think without those two things you would be in a fair amount of trouble. That was why when you started on this journey I recommended that you get your thyroid checked. Both my problem and yours are metabolic disorders and a wonky thyroid sometimes walks hand in hand. I know it does for me. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 23:33
Brenda: Yes, I can understand that and I do believe those pods are useful for you. You can get buried in what you are doing and forget to get your insulin if you blood sugar drops. Not saying that hasn't happened to me when I am working on my book because it has. But as soon as I recognize it, I get up and eat. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 23:31
Brenda: Understood. I watch pretty well everything I put into my mouth. I read sugar levels on cereal, which is why I stick too two or three brands that I know what the sugar level is. When I am out I don't eat many sweets. I don't eat canned vegetables because they are loaded with sugar to this day. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 23:29
Brenda: It is and it makes me even jittery when I am out sometime if I think I haven't eaten enough. Yup, not fun for sure. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 23:26
Brenda: I have never been one for sweets even as a kid. Oh, a little pop, some ice cream, cake. You know the usual suspects but candy. Nope. I eat a far amount of rice and pasta now but it is for the carbs which as you know turn into sugar in your system. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 23:25
Brenda: I can see that happening. It probably was years before you noticed or someone else noticed. I sort of self diagnosed but then I got an infection and my doctor sent me to the lab and my blood sugar was below normal. She said you ate breakfast before you went and I said yes. And then for sure I knew what was happening. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 23:23
Brenda: Yup and that is being hypoglycemic. Too much sugar and me, not good. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 23:20
6ixStringJack: I don't even want to think about how the hell I'd navigate a roller coaster situation if all I had was my intuition and a 30 pack of test strips that are supposed to last me half a month. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 10:23
6ixStringJack: I don't even want to think about how the hell I'd navigate a roller coaster situation if all I had was my intuition and a 30 pack of test strips that are supposed to last me half a month. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 10:23
6ixStringJack: I was completely lost those first few months. I could pretty easily live without the insulin pods and go back to shooting every day and before every meal, but I do believe that the CGM saved both my life and my sanity. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 10:20
6ixStringJack: Even if Diabetes were objectively worse than Hypoglycemia is, I wouldn't trade with you. Not knowing something like that is something that would literally drive me crazy. If anybody ever takes away my ability to know what my blood sugar is every 5 minutes, I don't imagine I will be living much longer after that. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 10:19
6ixStringJack: That feeling when it comes fast is pretty scary. I mean, at this point I don't get spooked much by it anymore. Chances are that I may have even experienced it more than you have in my few short years now just because of how dangerous and even deadly insulin can be if not administered correctly every single time. My problem now is that I still get jittery enough to over-compensate and get my ass on that rollercoaster that's pretty hard to get off once you start it.

6ixStringJack: I never ate much sweets or immediate sugar, but I ate TONS of rice and pasta, so I was a non-sweet sugar factory. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 10:16
6ixStringJack: I got SICK in the long run for sure when I was not processing the sugar (maybe for years), but it wasn't apparent until all the weight loss when I was walking around with a 300+ average per day for a few months. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 10:15
6ixStringJack: Wow. So you can still get sick with too much sugar and your body doesn't process it fast enough. Is that part of being hypoglycemic, or is that possibly something different? - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.03 10:14
Brenda: Mine if it goes low during the night, I find it is closer to the early morning hours. Then when I get up I feel crappy. So, I am in slow mode to make sure I don't worsen the situation. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.02 23:24
Brenda: What happened with my mum that time was an extreme case. Usually it is a slow burn for me too unless I am rushing around and I can really feel it coming on. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.02 23:22
Brenda: I don't know which is worse diabetes or hypoglycemia. At least you can monitor it but I can only go by how I am feeling. Soda these day it probably is a mix of both. Plain sugar and corn syrup. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.02 23:21
Brenda: Taking glucose tabs would be too much sugar for me and I have thought about it over the years. But no. I might have even told this story. Was out with a friend and we stopped for lunch at a Chinese place. I had sweet and sour pork, glass of coke. Well, with all that sugar I couldn't finish it. We paid left the restaurant and got back in the car. I was feeling so crappy, my friend looked at me and said you are green. Now it's an hours drive from where we were back to the city. By the time we got back, I was feeling better. It took my body an hour to process that amount of sugar. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.02 23:18
Brenda: I think I remember talking about that too when you were first diagnosed. When I am that low, yes I do. It probably is because our problems are caused by different things. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.02 23:14
6ixStringJack: That's really interesting that your blood sugar would dip overnight while you're sleeping too. That's the worst time for me because your liver dumps sugar and growth hormone in your bloodstream while you're sleeping. So even if I didn't eat for hours before bed, I could be dropping for the first 3 or 4 hours of sleep, but by the time I woke up I'd have a score of over 200 by the time I woke up if I didn't have a basal shot or my insulin pod stopped working overnight while I was sleeping. It was part of why my numbers were the worst in the morning when I was in ketoacidosis. I was waking up regularly in the morning anywhere between 400 and 600 for months while I was losing all that weight before I got the diagnosis. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.02 13:47
6ixStringJack: Most times I get down to 60 it's a slow burn and it was because I was doing physical work while also getting my full basal drip during the day and not having it on automatic mode. That's not such a serious thing and it is a slow drop, so even if I didn't catch the low before the monitor hits 60 and tells me I'm there, I usually still have about 30 minutes to eat something and get back up before I dip anywhere below 50 and start feeling negative effects, so I can eat something healthy and get back up without putting more pure sugar or whatever corn syrup garbage they put in our soda these days. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.02 13:44
6ixStringJack: If I tried fixing that with peanut butter alone, I'd be either dead or braindead by the time that kicked in and got my sugar up to a reasonable level. Not even joking. Can of soda works just as quick, but I don't ever keep any of that on hand. Same with candy, but I don't keep that around. If I've got that honey and oats Cheerios on hand, that would be about the quickest food product I could consume to get me back up, but it's still not as fast as the tabs or pure junk. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.02 13:44
6ixStringJack: I take 3 or 4 glucose tabs (they are big), which is just basically 15 grams of pure sugar. Unless I've made a really serious mistake, 4 tabs usually is more than enough to get me back to where I need to be within about 10 minutes max. Unfortunately, there's really no "healthy" option to get me up fast enough because if I'm getting that low it came in quick and is still dropping fast because of the excess insulin floating around in my veins. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.02 13:43
6ixStringJack: I remember the story with your mom and you walking like you were drunk. I think when I was first diagnosed and had my first low we were talking about it then. It sounds to me like you need quite a bit to recover when you go low. I wonder if that's more our own differences in DNA that react differently, or if our illnesses are really that far apart under the hood despite the identical negative effects we can suffer if we don't fix the issue asap? - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.02 13:36
Brenda: My mum once got an example of me going low when we were shopping. She said I was walking like I was drunk. We went to a local restaurant and I kid you not. I eat a small bowl of soup, a small bowl of spaghetti and meat sauce then dessert with a small pepsi on top of that. I felt good enough that we could walk home. But once in I ate half a bun with peanut butter on it and another half glass of pepsi before I really felt alright. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.01 23:29
Brenda: That's another difference for me it will usually take time for me to realize that it is happening. I don't eat overly sugared cereal that is bad for me. I ten to eat Quaker instant porridge for my meds. Then before I go to bed, I switch between Shreddies with not much sugar to spoon sided shredded wheat with no sugar. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.01 23:26
Brenda: Okay. I eat peanut butter usually with no sugar added as the bread and peanut butter together will act reasonably fast on me. I spread my amount of sugar out over the day as well to keep me eve. But I know I have to eat something before I go to bed. Usually cereal or I can wake up feeling crappy the next morning. Sugar gone too low during the night. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.01 23:22
Brenda: Think I remember the sequel too. Might look for them at my library. It's a good place sometimes to find movies that I haven't seen. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.01 23:20
6ixStringJack: But when I go low, it's usually happennig really quick and I need straight sugar tabs or a high sugar cereal like Honey Nut Cheerios, or even better their Honey Oat 3rd' version they made. That tastes awesome, but I can only have that sparingly compared to regular cheerios. I usually mix that half and half with peanuts and the salty/sweet combo is pretty awesome. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.01 11:10

6ixStringJack: Strange... Peanut butter doesn't help me at all if I'm getting into trouble. It's way too slow acting. Actually, peanut butter is good for me, but in a much different way. Even though there is quite a bit of sugar in it, it's so slow acting that it will actually interfere with anything else I'm eating and greatly slow down the sugar absorbsion into my bloodstream, so putting a little bit of PB in with whatever I'm eating can allow me to spread my bolus a bit longer and not worry so much about spiking too high while also not taking a large front-loaded dose that might be just a little too big. Helps keep things evened out. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.01 11:10
6ixStringJack: They made a sequel to Twister that came out last year called Twisters. I heard it wasn't half bad, but I don't know if any of the original cast showed up or not. Unfortunately Paxton passed a while earlier. If I remember right, Paxton and Hunt are divorced or were about to get divorced, and Paxton brings his current girlfriend along for the ride and she does NOT enjoy it.

Brenda: That is true and we can't do anything else but deal with our sugar issues as best we can. Like I've said been living with a long time and not many people around me have seen me go too low or have to much. Yes, living alone with these conditions isn't easy. I keep a number of things on hand just incase. Peanut butter for me is a good one on bread for when I go low. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.01 08:53
Brenda: Think I watched Shawshank when it first came out something. Shows you how long it's been since I've seen it. Yeah, Steel Magnolias is a good film and I wouldn't classify it as a chick flick. There is a lot humour in it as well as sadness. Just life that could happen anywhere.
