6ixStringJack: Kind of funny though when you also think about how wrong he was when he thought we'd still have large microphones that could be somewhat easy to spot if you knew the places to look for them. Almost 8 years ago I removed a mic from an Amazon remote. It was housed inside of an aluminum shield that was about 1/8th the size of a postage stamp, and the mic was only about 1/2 the size of the shield. We're talking grain of rice mic, in a product that I was able to buy for $20 on sale 8 years ago. Just running on a few AAA batteries for months at a time and always listening. By that point, those people are going to be surrounded by tech toys that we would think was magic if we saw them in action today and didn't live the 100 years it took to get there. Not just the internet, but nobody can even bother me unless they're with me or know where I'm going to be and come find me or call somebody else who they know will be there. 6ixStringJack: I love not having a phone. I got rid of mine right before smart phones became a thing everyone had. And even though all my phone did was phone, it felt like going cold turkey on a drug for the first 2 or 3 months. I can't even imagine how difficult it would be to go back to a regular flip phone if you've grown up all your life with that smartphone in your hands. 6ixStringJack: I kind of get the phones at the Dr.'s office though. That's not a fun place to be, and if you're not there with anyone, you're probably not in much of a mood to be talkative anymore than most of the other folk are. Although I have had a few interesting conversations with some old dogs while I've been there. One or two of them even started with somebody 30 years older than me making a comment that we're the only two without our phones out.

6ixStringJack: Yeah... It's funny. I can hold my hand out and it's steady. It's not like I'm so hopped up on coffee that I'm just shaking or anything. I think it's possible that I've been working way too many hours at computers and not doing enough other things and my hands are just exhausted and not getting the breaks they need in between or something. But the amount of unintended double-clicks and miss-clicks has kind of gotten a little worryingly high in the last few weeks. If I didn't keep good backups, one of the miss-clicks would have been a catastrophe, since I'm in the middle of using a very powerful tool I recently came across, but one that can very easily destroy all of your work if you're not careful with it. It took me 8 hours to familiarize myself with this program enough to even attempt using it on my previous work, and even then I made a mirror of my entire setup before doing it just in case. Good thing I did.

Brenda: Yeah, I was glad too. You have thought so but at least it's done now. Not saying there wasn't some fuss but I think once people, like school boards and some parents saw the light. 6ixStringJack: I finished reading that article after I sent it to you. Unfortunately, it didn't end well. She couldn't even make it the full month. But it was a Vox article, so I didn't have my hopes up from the beginning. At least it sounds like she really did enjoy some aspects of not having a smartphone and she's going to try to develop some better habits and make a real conscious effort to limit her time spent on social media with it and only use it for the work functons and for getting alerts about social interactions and parties coming up, rather than just live all the free-time in her life through it instead of being in the real world. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 05.28 05:34

People don't think nothing about pulling their phones out of their pockets and purses and doom scrolling their time away. Zero effort. With family history of MS and now an personal relationship with auto-immune issues, I'm hoping that's all it is. 6ixStringJack: I think some kids are growing up and realizing that they aren't forming any real memories. They probably hear stories from their parents and wonder why they've got nothing like that to tell their own kids since they've lived life through those phones. Brenda: As to my dad's hometown of Medicine Hat", it started out as tent town for the railroad workers in 1883. They were building the CPR. After that second was built the Northwest Mounted Police came out(RCMP) to keep the law. "Medicine Hat" comes from a Blackfoot word "soamis", which translates to "medicine hat" or "the eagle's tail." Frankly, I'm glad they went with Medicine Hat. It has a nice ring too it. There also several legends around the name. One talks of a young hunter and his wife that are given a special hat for a sacrifice they made. It gave the hunter the ability to heal and to hunt better. Brenda: Looked up Moose Jaw and it comes from a Cree word, "moscatanisipiy" which translates to "warm place by the river" or there is a creek near the city that is apparently shaped like a moose's jaw. The name was recorded on a survey map, most likely for the railroad and it was called "Moose Jaw Bone Creek". Good grief.

6ixStringJack: Oh man... I feel for you on the Mahjong and cell phones. There should be a no-text/emergency call only rule in place. Games like that and Chess and Scrabble can already take way too long if you're playing with somebody who just sits there for 5 minutes before taking a turn. Some of my friends came up for a weekend for SummerFest and they saw that and he's got a picture of himself lighting up his bong next to the sign.
