6ixStringJack: So yeah... That's why I've got to make sure that I put in bigger wiring than I currently need between my breaker box and the outdoor generator plug. I was somewhat limited on this because of the different sizes of plugs/outlets for different sized generators. My current one is small enough where I couldn't install a plug or large wiring that would be sufficient for a massive generator one day, but I have been able to get what I need where I can still get one around 3 times the size of my current genny and I won't have any problems or safety issues from using that extra power. I just won't ever be hooking up some massive 10k or 12k watt monster to it. But that's fine. I don't need anything that big. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.07 01:51

6ixStringJack: I think what I probably could do in an extended power outage during the middle of winter is rotate what is getting powered and I could still get some heat when I needed it. Chances are that if it's that cold, I'm not getting a ton of water in the basement anyhow and the power was knocked out because of wind and not a bolt of lightning. In that event, I could easily flip the breakers for the fridge and sump off for 10 or 15 minutes and get the house nice and toasty warm before switching them back.

6ixStringJack: I don't think I have to go crazy overboard since in the near 15 years I've lived here the longest power outage I ever had was 8-10 hours, and the 2nd longest was only about half of that. But for whatever reason they are fairly common here. At least annoying black/brownouts are where I stopped bother resetting the stove and microwave clocks many years ago. But if I did get myself a 6,000 watt genny one day than I would basically be able to power my entire house off of gasoline if I needed to.

6ixStringJack: But as dependable as my genny is, it's not too much power. I think it's only 2,000 or 2,500 watts. Easily enough to handle my sump and fridge, although, if I have other lights on I will assume that every time the pump starts up it will be drawing extra power to start and the lights might flicker with that fridge on there if they just both happen to be doing their things at the same time. There's no way I could power a cheap 1,800 watt heater with it AND do those other things, and I'm assuming the blower on my ancient furnace would be way too high to keep the heat on with this genny. But at least I won't flood and my insulin will not be at risk. Not sure if I could actually power up the internet and a tablet too, but I will be testing all of that out when I finally get this thing installed.

6ixStringJack: That kit is important because without it you could easily "back feed" electric into the grid and somebody working on powerlines could actually get zapped or worse from people using generators to power their house without shutting their house off from the grid first. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.07 01:36

For now I'll be happy just knowing that I can easily get the sump working when it needs to be in a power outage without getting sopping wet outside then going deep into the crawl space to take the pump off my main and onto the generator plug. This new setup will allow me to jack my generator right up to the power for my house, but only after the kit I install ensures that the main power to my house is cut off first. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.07 01:35

Brenda: I will. Have to get a bottle of water today before I had off to a mammogram. Yuck! My hair is starting to get oily because of the heat but I can't put a hair clip in to keep it off my neck because of the metal in it. As I said no smoke near me. 6ixStringJack: I'm planning on wiring everything up in such a way where I can upgrade in the future without having to knock any of the wall out to put thicker wires behind the scenes. 6ixStringJack: My step-dad gave me a little genny a few years back. It's a dewalt though so it's real dependable and it's a work horse. It's nowhere near enough power to run A/C but I should be able to at least do the sump and the fridge and a few low-watt lightbulbs with it. 6ixStringJack: That's something I plan on fixing this summer. I've got everything I need now except for about 4 feet of thick cable. I'll be able to plug my genny right into the side of my house instead of having to drag a cord out and then bring that wet, dirty thing back in through the basement back into the crawl. Bonus will be that I'll power the fridge too with the insulin... With a possibility that I can even power my furnace too. I'll be testing it all for sure, but if I can't do it now I could power that and a lot more down the road if I get a bigger generator. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.06 05:26

6ixStringJack: At least you have a phone. Going to have to start thinking of that as I get older. When my cable or power goes out, all I can do is sit and wait. 6ixStringJack: Still wet around here this morning. Cool day after all that rain. We were still getting it early this morning. Looks like the streets and sidewalks are finally starting to dry up, but ain't no good for mowing today. Maybe tomorrow. Got stuff to do on Saturday, so might be putting that off until Sunday otherwise. Not really necessary right now, I just wanted the workout.

6ixStringJack: I can't believe you've never seen those tins before. I'm thinking you just don't have them up there. Come the Holidays, they're literally everywhere around here. Just super-overpriced popcorn in a nice flashy tin cylinder, usually with Santa or a Snowman or any other Christmas paraphanalia on them. I've seen them put sports teams on them too during big game events. The perfect size for a garage waste bin when they're done. I've seen people clean them out and use them to help store their Christmas stuff too. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.05 22:18

Brenda: Well, in BC the weather is cooling down in the northern part of the province. That's where all the fires are. There is some rain coming into the Prairies but it won't be enough to do any good. The rain will help keep the smoke down around you. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.05 09:31

6ixStringJack: Everything is sopping wet outside after the thunderstorms I was blissfully ignorant of last night as I went to bed early for a change and they didn't wake me up at all. We've got rain on and off all day. I'll be inside away from the smoke. Hopefully tomorrow is good though because I want to mow the lawn. Doesn't really need it yet, but I want to keep up on it and I could use the exercise. Hopefully you guys do end up getting some rain to help out soon.

6ixStringJack: Those tins are usually Christmas, but I've seen them for other holidays and birthdays as well. Just giant things with fully popped popcorn. Usually they have cardboard dividers inside that separate butter, cheese and caramel popcorn. Working as much as I have in retail, I see them all the time. They're super overpriced before the holiday, then I'd buy them up after the holiday for 10% of what they were charging.

Brenda: Very true. My dad's oldest sister developed diabetes when she was well into her 70s or 80s. She managed to control it with her diet and just did as her body needed. Which you said is what you do. That is true. No one needs to know unless what you are doing changes. You just carry on. - http://www.fireflyfans.net 06.04 23:25

6ixStringJack: I didn't mean a can. I meant one of those big party tin things, usually seen around Christmas. I didn't see it poured into the bowl, so it could have just been from a bag. When I think of this friend and his family though I don't think about junk food out of a bag is all.

6ixStringJack: You'd figure it out and adjust. Just harder to do that when you get older is all. It's crazy to think how many Type I's are out there and I've "never met one" until I got it myself. 6ixStringJack: I know I don't handle the heat as well as I used to. Haven't cared much for temps above 90 for 10 or so years anyway, but I go out of my way to avoid them now, which I didn't do before. Brenda: Nope, no smoke my way. Probably hasn't gotten down to the coast yet. Keep listening to those warnings. They go out for a purpose. We are dry in I think all of BC for the rest of the week.
