Standalone. Prompt: Leather. Simon, Mal/Inara. PG-13.

Hi, Guys! It's been awhile since Bed and Wine—I missed y'all. This is a little standalone prompted by the lovely Leiasky, who was understandably tired of listening to me complain about the longer piece I’m working on now. Comments are love! <3 April

***

Sure as he knew anything, Malcom Reynolds knew that certain conversations would never take place on his boat. He would never teach Little Kaylee about the birds and the bees. He wouldn't ask Jayne for fashion pointers or challenge River to some hand-to-hand. He wouldn't speak the “w” word in front of Inara, at least not if he wanted to keep courting her, which he did even though she made fun of him for saying “courting.” (“I woulda called it screwing, but we ain't up to that yet” didn't go over so well either.) He was also fairly certain he wouldn't ever bring up the subject of Wash in Zoe's presence—not until she broached the topic first, and he was still waiting for that day some three months after the man’s dying. Malcom Reynolds wasn't a man to speak in certainties—the 'verse had too great a sense of irony for that kinda talk. And if his current situation wasn't absolute proof of those ironic tendencies, he didn't know what was. Because up until five minutes ago, Mal was pretty sure he'd never ask Simon Tam for relationship advice.

And yet here he was—sitting on the infirmary table and swinging his legs while Simon eyed him like one of those ranch hounds the neighbors' kids used to torment. A pretty, well-groomed pup with a fancy dog-school degree. Mal grinned at his own humor, and Simon sighed.

“I so enjoy our little visits, Captain.”

“Yeah? Me too. Maybe we oughta start a book club.”

“Or a poetry circle. River says you read Coleridge beautifully.”

Simon smirked, proud of himself.

Mal smiled crookedly.

“Don't you just miss the good old days when she was crazy?” he reflected. “Anyway, it's none of your business what your sister and I do on

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was more than hilarious - there are so many gems, I could never possibly highlight them all - but I am currently laughing so hard I have tears in my eyes!

This was just priceless - your Mal and Simon dialogue was absolutely perfect and each of Simon's quips was more than in character - and of course, Inara's parting shot about Kaylee and Leather begs for a sequel, but I won't push ... much!

This was so great! Thanks for posting, I needed to laugh!

Oh, man. Ohhhh, maaaan. Ai ta ma de, this is high-larious! Loved the bits about Inara and Kaylee's conversation in the engine room, not to mention the ending. What TamSibling said - no hope of a sequel? ;) I mean, if Kaylee thinks black leather is sexy..........

He made an effort not to die...

*busts a gut* Right there with you, my brother. ;)

Bravo!

Oh man, what isn't great about this? Not a gorramn thing!! The dialogue and goofiness are perfect, and Simon and Mal talking leather underthings and then Inara saying corset, BWAHHHH!!!!! Mal in a leather corset? Oh good lord...

I've missed your writing, and I LOVED this!!

And this didn't disappoint! So cute and sweet and OMG hilarious!

Favourite part:

And Inara - so sweetly seductive at the end! Mal's so verklempt. Heeeeeh. And a lovely parting shot. *g*

Yay! I'm glad you posted this so fast! See, I told you you needed a break from your current monster! :P

There are FAR too many good lines in here to pick out just one. Like I told you earlier, I had my hand clasped firmly over my mouth while at work so I didn't howl like a loon and make everyone wonder what was wrong.

And you KNOW I will beg for a sequel. The ending just BEGS for one! And you know it!

Besides, don't you owe me some S/K fun?

Thanks so much for posting and ending our Kaynara Withdraw.

Oy with the uncomfortable laughing! I was hiding my face half of the time, just peeking over my sweatshirt. That and laughing silently until I thought I would stop breathing (silently because I share a tiny dorm room with a sleeping person at the moment). I loved it! It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion, and laughing to hard to say "wait! stop!". And wow, Mal as a hugger is absolutely adorable.

Absolutley ate this up while trying not to choke on my laughter! Brilliant, the whole dialogue between Mal and Simon was utterly priceless! And Inara with the tape measure, I have the sneaking notion that she was well aware Mal overheard her and Kaylee talking. It would seem the kind of thing that would happen, Mal's luck being what it is. Oh Lord, now Simon will be living in his own city of panic worrying about what Kaylee is up to. I want more! Ali D :~)
You can't take the sky from me

This was ab-so-freaking-ly hysterical! I'm still laughing so hard I'm crying!

The Mal-Simon interaction in this was just so spot on! I loved Simon's snarky comments, and Mal gave back as good as he got. There are too many to pick my favorite, so I'll just say I adored them all! *g*

And Inara's parting shot? Better watch out Simon. You may have been to University, but Kaylee's from the Rim. She knows what she wants, and goes after it with a vengeance! Hee!

Fantastic work!

"I love my captain."

I have to agree with all of the above. I loved this. The voices were spot on, the conversations were hysterical and priceless, and this just BEGS for a sequel!!!!

Thank's for the extra smile today. :)

I still can't wipe the smile off my face, and it's a good 20 minutes after reading this!

This fic just made my (already pretty gorram great) day!

Oh...oh...God, I can't stop! This was so freaking hilarious I'm gonna pass out right now:D

Definitely been missing ya, Kaynara! This fic just proves in a darker place in the BSR when you aren't posting. And what a post it was! The hesitant beginnings, the snark...the finale! Oh...Joss is probably steaming with jealousy and he doesn't even know why;D

Yea!!! New fic! WHOOT!

And what a freakin' hi-larious one it is, too! Good thing I wasn't having dinner or my computer would be wearing it. Lots of good lines in here. :) More?

The entire intro paragraph about conversations Mal would never have was spectacular.

“Forgive me, Captain. I didn’t realize we were all existing in Malcom Reynold’s fascist state.”
~ great Simon line

“Stop. Just, stop...a moment. Captain, are you asking me—Simon Tam—for relationship advice?”
“Don’t get a fat head, it was you or Jayne.”
~ I can only imagine how the alternative would have gone

“I can see why you ran.” Simon rolled his eyes. “God save us from giggling women.”
“It was nefarious-sounding laughter,” Mal protested. “Evil genius stuff.”
~ how very true this all is

“Like shoes and a swanky hat?”
~ it's funny how clueless Mal can be sometimes

“Relax, Mal.” Inara laid a hand flat against his chest. “I see you more in lace.”
~ this line (and the mental image it subsequently produced) made me almost laugh out loud

like Tamsibling and Leiasky...wayyy too many good lines in this...but a leather jacket? red herring anyone? the sequel should surprise poor frustrated Mal with something else...and Simon belongs in a lace teddy...if there ever was one ..LOL Great lil' fic!

This was absolutely wonderful! You really know the characters well enough to capture them accurately! Excellent, excellent work.
