“You're lying on my hair.”

He looks offended.

“I'm trying to save you.” He says it like she should be grateful.

She wants to answer: “I didn’t ask to be saved.” But that’s petty, and she refuses to be the petty one here. So she doesn’t say anything, just gives his rump a shove and frees her hair. She trails her fingers through the strands as though she's assessing damage. And gallantly ignores him.

“You know what? Shiny. No more savin’.” He’s mostly teasing and a little hurt. He wanted to play the hero, and she's ruined his fun. If this were fun. Which it’s not. “Amount a time you spend tending to that mane, I’d say it was a paying client.”

He grins, and she wants to slap the grin off his face and while he's reeling from the blow, kiss him senseless. She imagines thrusting her tongue between his lips to lick his teeth and the roof of his mouth. Kiss him till he’s fluid and gasping, his mouth opening and closing like a fish's. She thinks the shock of her kissing him might just kill him. Of course, she doesn’t wish him dead. It's just that she tends to think more fondly of him when he’s not in her sight. If they were to leave each other's presence for good, she might just fall in love.

“. . . .oughta think about moving. Could maybe mount a half decent stand in the—”

He's still talking. She snickers and thinks, “I could do stealthy better than that.” She, who was taught from age twelve to stand out.

“I, uh, been outta ammo since that encounter in the galley. I don’t suppose you’re carrying…anything?”

She hikes up her skirt to show the pistol riding her thigh.

“Huh,” he sa

When I first read this, I laughed like a little girl. A water fight! Bwahahaha! As always, your M/I banter is just perfect. However, I KNOW there is a Simon and Kaylee version of this . . .

And the second one I hadn't read before. It was perfectly in character for them and I just love the snarky between them. Even if they get together, I don't think that will ever end.

Nicely done!

Just thinking of Mal's eyes ... too pretty for a man ... Oh, shiny!

This was fantastic - the banter, the situational humour, the worries, the sentimentality - all really beautiful - and far too many funny lines to pick a favourite.

Absolutely amazing! This is so great! I love the first story because it is so perfectly Mal and Inara and a great example of misdirection.

I love the second because again it is perfectly in character for Mal and Inara and something that could definitely have panned out, given more series ... your characterizations are just spot on!

And I agree with Leiasky - I'd like to see the S/K version of that water fight!

Oh, this was superb work, Kaynara! Between the brilliant misdirection of the first time and the potentially fatal moment of the last time, we definitely get to see a lot of beautiful moments between Mal and Inara.

Honestly, I have to say loved both...but that the last tale was my favourite. Mainly because with the first, you know nothing serious could really happen 'less it went down the AU path. The latter tale, however, allows for so much more exploration of Mal and Inara's feelings and relationship post-Miranda. I especially was awed by how you described Inara's slow shift in perspective about her job through the three clients:D

Mal and his stories! I loved the first one, water fight, haha! And in the second one I loved it when Inara snorted and told Mal she was laughing with him (but we all know it was at him!).

"Though I guess for you the bedrooms tend to blur.”

You always get the words right.

Thanks.

Both these scenes are fun and I've come back to read them a few times. There's something sweet and sort of AU about the relationship, as though it just could not happen but it's what we all wish would happen (except the "oh god, oh god, we're all gonna die" parts).

:-)
