Post-BDM. The crew visits a drinking establishment on Beaumonde—no, not that one. Shameless Mal/Inara fluff ensues.

***

Almost disgustingly fluffy, save for a bit of Mal-brooding. Wow, I feel dirty. I'll try to angst it up next time. :)

Special thanks to my Flan B gals, Leiasky, Tamsibling and Leighkohl, for beta-ing. And to AWindsor for helping me teach Mal how to flirt. ;)

***

Considering the sequence of events resulting from their last visit to the Maidenhead, Mal thinks it prudent to take his crew to the drinking establishment down the street, lest they run afoul of any old friends. He actually has it in his head that they'll have a fine evening of crew bonding and conversation, even means to buy the first round of drinks. His crew, it seems, has other notions. Soon as they step through the door, his crewmates disperse in six different directions—five, actually, as Simon and Kaylee disperse together—leaving Mal to stand alone in the entryway, a stupid expression on his face as he watches them go.

“Y'all just...have fun then,” he calls after their retreating backsides.

Shaking the abandoned-puppy look from his face, he ambles over to the bar, angling apologetically between a pair of middle-aged women on barstools.

“Ladies. Sorry,” he says, trying to decide if one of them just stroked his butt on purpose, and ai ya, don't make eye contact.

There's a band playing—some techno-rock noise that makes his ears bleed. He tosses a few coins on the counter for a drink, “and make it a double, please.”

A double shot of whiskey later and he's feeling a little better about life. Or, at least life is quieter and less bright.

He laps the perimeter a time or two, sipping from a bottle of Blue Sun-brand beer, known throughout the 'verse for being cheap and...well, cheap. Trying not to wonder if it's wise to allow eighteen-year old River, or Jayne—he doesn't know how old Jayne is, would guess the man's long since abandoned his thirties—to d

Woohoo!!! First comment. ;)

"... Lucky for both of us, you're so terrible at flirting.”

Aw, Mal really is a TERRIBLE flirt. Goodness gracious.

But tipsy Inara and spin the bottle and kissing and the interrupting crew... Oh greatness. Just... greatness. I was so in need of some amazing M/I fluff! And I love her all snuggled against him with the rest of the crew.
And Kaylee and Simon throwing all the teasing back at him....

And River... "Whiskey, please. Make it a double."

If Mal thinks he's old, now... ;)

This was so great - It is impossible for me to pick out my favorite lines, because each paragraph has at least one gem.

You so obviously know Mal's mind and the way you portray him is perfect. I love drunk Inara and her wish to stop talking and do - other things! It's about damn time ... although I would love to see the morning after with the entire crew hung over as all get out and River flitting about and bing annoying! Now that would be great!

Wow. As a firm Mal fan, this is fantastic.

>He wonders when he stopped being “young people” and became…what? Captain No Fun?

This has to be my favourite line ...

Loved this and doesn't it all feel a bit of a set-up except I really think Inara has had quite a bit to drink hence the lowering of inhibitions which would have never allowed her to just let down her hair a little and go for what she wants. Now, there has to be another chapter right? The one that tells us what happens next? Ali D :~)

So beautifully crafted - every touch in the right place.

You have Mal's voice down SO well, I'm envious! I love his observations and just - everything about this. I couldn't pick out a specific part because each line is just so perfect.

And River being young and able to process the booze better than the older people was just a great end.

The resta the folk beat me to it- great stuff , a 10.
“I guess I must have slipped. The floor, it was...slippery.”
I can hear Morena's voice , in that OMR tone, perfectly...

squeeeeeeeeeeee! I love it! So very lovely...

Drunk, flirty Inara is a helluva challenge to take on, but you got her down flat. Your Mal, as always, is perfect, and the way the crew separates in the bar is spot on and highly entertaining.

And the spin the bottle and the kissing? *sigh* Mal's awkward reaction is so right, I can picture it easily.

Can I just say - when Kaylee said "Cap'n Hotpants" I had a brief mental picture of Mal in those teeny tiny spandex hot pants that used to popular. Hmmmm. :p

I like your fluff - which is saying a lot because I'm usually all about angst! What you write is believable and heart-warming and fits the characters. Bring on more anytime!

love your Inara, Kaynara, so many writers do her little justice...tipsy or not, she gets what she wants in spite of Mal's poor flirting skills

love the image of the crew drinking around the table with happy Mal...makes a reader all warm and fuzzy

Cap'n Hotpants indeed! I let out a girly *SQUEE* when I saw a new Kaynara fic had been posted and... well, you didn't disappoint!!! This was just perfect! Perfect! I swear, if I were Bill Gates-rich, I would pay you to sit at a desk and write nothing but Mal/Inara fanfic all day. You would get bathroom breaks, of course. And overtime pay. And the butler would bring you snacks. Good snacks, too, not Ritz crackers and canned cheese. The fancy stuff.
Anyhoo, loved it! Can't wait for the next one. Blast! Why wasn't I born a billionaire?

Yea! More ficcy goodness, and what a wonderfully fluffy fic it is. I think I'm with EmipreX on having you write lots of Mal/Inara fic. You do an awesome job.

More!! Please?

Aw crap...my comment got ate:(

To reiterate: this some of the most brilliant stuff I have ever seen, Kaynara! The level of skill and brilliance you've shown here honestly blows my freakin' mind;D

Gotta admit though...had I had the brain fart (and the courage to write it) that came up with this idea? Would have had Mal be sarcastically honourable and fended Inara off...comically;)
