Runnin' with scissors
Friday, 01 August 2008 00:38:35

There's times one comes upon in life that just makes you feel like runnin' through the halls with an unsheathed pair of scissors. Those times when the echoes in yer mind keep playin' yer worst nightmares and you're the unlucky victim standin' center stage. And then there comes the time when you say to yourself; Hey! We don't run with scissors anymore, not since the accident..." But still... the thrill, and the dangers, the dare, the ignoring of all the advice, you just gotta push it to the limit... find out what lies on the other side of that unknown... what WILL happen this time? I've been running with scissors most of my life. I still haven't lost the feeling that it gives ya'. It's like going out to the black ain't it? I can't wait to find out what's out there. Keep it shiny!

GEN CON INDY 2008
Saturday, 02 August 2008 12:39:37

OK mudders, I know some of you folk are gamers. Does anyone know if Joss, any of the crew, or any of the folk who wrote the Serenity RPG will be there? This is the first time I've been able to go since the 80's. It will also probably be the last time I get to go. I sure would be nice to get some autographs on some of my Firefly / Serenity goods. Thanks for any input! Keep it Shiny!

Sold my first "Zoe" perfume oil today!
Sunday, 03 August 2008 04:44:56

Yup. Lady & her husband / boyfriend came by my perfume stand on the street and tried Zoe and without any cajoling on my part cuz she really liked the scent she shelled out $10 cash-y dollars. Whoo-hoo! Would be nice to sell some to an actual Browncoat one of these days... (see my first post on this subject.)

Delay in fluff
Monday, 04 August 2008 12:16:45

I know I promised you fluff, but I have severe writer's block at the moment, so it could be a few days. Bear with me and I hope normal service will be resumed shortly. Besides, I know you're just waiting for me to take you into darker territory again with PROSPERO'S LEGACY ... Jane

Bored..
Monday, 04 August 2008 23:25:47

Just trying this out, don't have much to do and I thought my profile looked a little empty. I guess from time to time I'll update this just on the off chance any clicks my profile out of curiosity.

Gota question =)
Tuesday, 05 August 2008 20:35:43

The last chapter of 'because he loved her' will be posted soon... I was thinking about making a sequel. If there'll be a sequel, I will focus more on Mal's family this time - that's the only thing I'm telling you *winks* but to do that, I want to know if you want it... it's useless posting something that no one reads. So I guess the question is, do you want a sequel? Hope to hear from you soon, Proudly M/I obsessed Kim

Putting stories back up.
Wednesday, 06 August 2008 02:38:44

As a newer author here, I got hit by the big hack job last year, which was such a tragedy. [Thanks Haken for this site and everything you did to recover as much material as possible.] I'm finally going to slowly reintroduce the few fics I had up originally before adding the ones I've written since. So if you see anything in the first 5-6 stories and wonder, you may have read it before.

i'm illiterate
Wednesday, 06 August 2008 21:42:13

apparently i'm illiterate found out this today after some more "educated person" the type who think that reading childrens novels is cool, and frequent a certain uk website I have mentioned before, told me that only people with a basic grasp of english may post on their site.Well that counts me out ,and apart from that I was having such a great week getting in touch with nature .Anyhow this site is now my spiritual home and all my love goes out to you guys

An interesting philisophical question
Wednesday, 06 August 2008 23:42:37

I'm working on a board game. I'm studying video game design, which has it's roots in board games, so that's where I'm working at the moment. I've already done a Serenity game, so now I'm working on one based in the DC universe. Anyway, my question. What is the purpose of a hero's life? Most of what they do is reactionary, which means that there is no goal other than to stop other people's goals. They exist simply to endure. I actually had the same problem with the Serenity game I made. Mal has no clear goal, so I had no clear ending for the game. In this case, though, there's not even a way for different superheroes to compete with each other. At least in the Firefly 'verse, there's money to be made. My ultimate goal here is to come up with an ending for the game, but the underlying question is still the same. What do heroes strive for?

professional opinions...
Thursday, 07 August 2008 02:27:30

Well folks, been off the site for a while. Been most joyously unemployed, yay! Lordy, I wish this could last. Not that I'm loafing. I've been up at 6 or 7 everyday, generally working much more than 9 to 5 on my house and getting ready for my new job. But I'm not stuck in a cubicle at any point in the day, so color me happy! Also, I'm taking a novel writing class. I'm developing an original idea, and I've gotten good feedback on it. I've got the basics of the plot set out, but I'm not real sure how I'm going to present it. For instance - many of the other writers in the class use first person, and I've been playing with that. It does kind of stick me with one character, so I'm not sure if I want to develop too much in that direction. Yep, there's a long way to go! So, the first week of the class I was straight up about my writing history and told them I came from fanfic. Of course, none of them had any idea what that is - in fact, no one in the class is even into sci-fi. There were a few *oh shit* looks when I told them my genre LOL! Which makes it especially cool that I believe I'm winning them over. I don't think they've encountered the kind of character driven sci-fi that Joss inspires. Because - although my world and my plot are vastly different from Joss's, I'm following his lead of using characters that real people can relate to, and giving them lives that feel relevant, even if the worlds they live in are very different from ours. Which is to say that this fanfic thing has been wonderful. I honestly wasn't sure if I was just a hack that would get torn up when I encountered "real life" writers. (The class includes published novelists and long time columnists. And hell - let me plug the teacher. She wrote this:

Sheesh, wha'd I miss?
Thursday, 07 August 2008 11:34:43

The weekend of Comic Con, I was out of town and mostly away from my laptop. So, I missed all of the highlights from the Whedonpanel, and I still haven't read up on them. Then last night, the Serenity: The Other Half comic appeared on Dark Horse's MySpace page (in case you missed it:

My Sketchbook ...

... has gone missing. I am not impressed. It wouldn't be so bad, but at least 12 of the drawings in it are the only copies I have of them. :pissed: Plus, some of them are my friends' works. If I don't manage to find/retrieve it soon, I'm gonna :censored: :censored: some :censored: :censored:.

I guess I should expect it by now!

Chapters 12 & 13 of Trials and Redemptions - Posted!
Wednesday, 13 August 2008 04:55:19

Hi all! Chapters 12 AND 13 of Trials and Redemptions are up now... hope everyone likes it! As always, I very much appreciate any constructive criticism or comments. I am beginning to think there is a conspiracy against my abilities to update this story as regularly as I want. But as a reward for your loyal reading, we have a double post tonight! And at the end of Chapter 13, we see the first major plot development that occurs somewhere other than Serenity. I must say thank you to those who have left comments to this point, but I can't make it better if no one wants to tell me what's wrong... so if you like something, but even more so if you don't like it, speak up! As long as you're polite about it, and most people on here are (based on seeing comments on other fics), I have no problem with hearing what anyone has to say. Chapters 14 and 15 are fairly well developed, so I expect you should see at least one, if not two more chapters, coming this weekend.

Thursday, 14 August 2008 04:30:29

I am not sure i understand his logic. Someone please help me. But, I guess that himself has decided to punish me for mom winning her suit against him by not paying the child support. Your Kung Fu is the best...
Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:20:39

The Edinburgh Festival is electric at this time of year. Big named actors, and undiscovered talent flock to the capital for a couple weeks. Nancy Cartwright (Bart Simpson), Christian Slater, Charlize Theron are a few celebs that spring to mind. Hell, Ricky Gervais once took over Edinburgh castle for his show. The proceeding fringe festival is cool too, and it REALLY bugs the hell out of me. There’s a cultural/entertainment explosion happening on my doorstep, and never enough time or money to check it out. There’s no excuse not to. The capital is a 20 min train journey away, and I LOVE cultural entertainment. In the past, I’ve enjoyed watching the street performers. The Native American musicians that I saw back in ’06 were awe-inspiring. I still listen to the CDs I picked up that day. There was a different performer who used the same area, but that was another fest. He was an Aussie guy that juggled flaming sticks and stuff. He cracked jokes, and was great at working the crowd. The place is chock full of international flavour. However, I’ve never gone to any of the pre booked theatre performances, music and stand up gigs. I've always thought that it would be too much of a hassle and pretty expensive. Lately, I've been going a bit stir crazy. Granted, I've got Collectormania on the 23rd, but that isn't something to shout about. I might not fully enjoy it, as the guest list keeps switching up. A couple of guests who I was already looking forward to, have cancelled. So, I thought: 'Fuck it. I'm going to a FRINGE show. I'm sick of holding back all my cash for the 23rd. Conventions aren't the be all and end all. I'm allowed to do other stuff.' These kind of decisions work out fine though. Like an overadventurous cat landing on its feet. Thankfully, I'm not completely wreckless in the wallet department. Money is something that I'm fairly sensible with. I'm a bit sceptical that things have worked out the way they have. Come Friday, I'm expecting to be hit by a bus, or one of those bicycle rickshaws, en route to the venue. xD Regaining my sanity, I scored a ticket for this comedy improv gig:

TSCC and my failed fan fic
Thursday, 14 August 2008 16:59:40

Well I bought TSCC on dvd the other day and was completely blew away by it, as I had only watched it on poor quality Internet videos. I know it has another season and it starts soon so I can't wait. I decided to go back to my fanfic Someone to carry you and I looked out my plan for chapter one liked it alot and proceed to start writing it, I realized quickly there after that I could not write it for the simple reason that I had not watched firefly nor was I entirely sure what I wanted to write. I decided to take a trip into the blue sun room. Big mistake, after I read a few chapters of a fanfic I had been enjoying and then a few of other ones. I lost all confidence in my fanfic. I mean with so many great fanfics out there how could mine compete? No idea what am going to do now. oh and just a word about my favorite Girl Summer Glau, I keep saying her name when singing "Holy Mother" how weird is that?

Ta ma de has HOW many definitions?
Thursday, 14 August 2008 19:07:24

So I'm reading my glorious Volume 2 Visual Companion that I recieved yesterday and there are so many translations of ta ma de...a different one in each episode script almost! So interesting and a little confusing! And Jayne's fav adjective is spelled gorramN! With an 'n'! I have never seen it spelled that way in any of the fics I've read...I'm learning so much!!! SQUEE! How much do I love Adam Baldwin for bringing so many of his own ideas to the character of Jayne!

Narcissistic little questions
Thursday, 14 August 2008 22:16:25

Sometimes I look at the real world discussions on this page and I think to myself 'Am I even part of this world that these people are talking about?' Because I live alone I have to answer myself aswell, and the answer is 'No' The questions about England turning into a 1984 reality show and the fact that the biggest scandal about the upcoming US president is that he is either too wrinkly or too much of a celebrity throws the situation in my own country into harsh relief. I watched a movie called 'Blood diamond' a couple of months ago and what I got out of it is this: Leo DiCaprio's character gets the sympathy vote because his parents were barbarically killed back in the 80s in Zim. In comparison all the SA guys are monsters - while real SA people are being killed today. Crime is a complete terrorist here. We all look over our shoulders, all the time. The worst thing is that you don't notice it before you go to another country and get back to this beautiful but pretty scary place. Don't mind me, I'm just going through a spot of depression. Around this time is the 11 year anniversary of my cousin's murder. He was 18. He was shot in the stomach and left to bleed to death on the highway. The whole thing was rather highlighted when one of my friends ran into a cash-in-transit heist last friday and had to lie down next to the highway and watch the guys with the AK-47s run past after killing the only man who tried to stand up to them. Yeah, it's personal when it becomes part of your daily life. But as narcissistic as my little ramblings are, they gave me some relief. Which I suppose is the point. Damn, sometimes this place gets me down. Tomorrow, I will be positive again.

I am NOT a Trekkie

I love conspiracy theories, don't you?
Friday, 15 August 2008 06:36:57

Check this one out for fun! The Scorpions are a special unit that investigates organised crime and corruption, which is being disbanded for political reasons.
BRITISH and American intelligence agencies were the “masters” of the Scorpions, a public hearing into their dissolution heard yesterday. Sam Kikine, who heads the International Traditional and Medicine Research Council, accused Britain’s MI5 and the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of controlling the elite crime fighting unit. “Why have the Scorpions not investigated (chemical warfare expert) Wouter Basson and the CIA, who have created this Aids? The Scorpions are working for MI5 and the CIA and not for South Africa,” he told the hearing at the Umlazi Indoor Sports Complex in Durban.
But meanwhile in Mozambique:
Maputo - A Mozambican woman recently gave birth to three cups in the southern province of Gaza, independent television channel Stv reported on Thursday, showing images of the crockery. The channel said the 18-year-old woman who lives in Xai Xai, gave birth to the cups on her way to hospital after she had complained of labour pains. Images of the three cups were shown on the television station and the woman said she was three months pregnant at the time of the "birth". The Mozambican association of traditional healers (Ametramo) told the station that there was nothing strange about the story. Ametramo president Aulerio Demoraz said similar cases had occurred in other parts of the world due to witchcraft. He said the woman needed to be treated with traditional medicines in order to exorcise the "evil spirits" which made her give birth to the cups.
Wonder what the CIA and MI5 had to do with that one!?

The Albatross Diaries (1,2,3...Check...)
Saturday, 16 August 2008 02:23:13

So...by now everybody's filked and/or fanfic'd the story of Serenity and her crew up one side and down the other. Including me. Some's good, some's bad, and some...well, it ain't real shiny to put it mildly. Kinda like them plates for sale on that border moon where they kidnap pompous journalin' doctors who are never seen again. Haven't looked real hard to see if it's been done(probably lots), AND I know that I should be posting this in the fanfic section, BUT I thought I'd try it out first, see if I should keep goin' or turn the other way and pretend it never happened. So, you logbook browsers out there, lend me your eyes for a click and I'll show em somethin' interestin'. They're called 'The Albatross Diaries', and they're what passes for River Tam's own record of her time in The Academy, and her descent into madness. The project daunts me a little--kinda scary prospect for a writer, doncha think? The following is rather shorter than the explanation, but that's what you get in today's world. :D I just took one entry out of the middle of the time period--for those wanting detailed analysis, leave a comment. Until then, have a slice of Academy mystery meat...mwah ha...enjoy... ________________________________________________ THE ALBATROSS DIARIES ENTRY #??? These are the things I will keep in the layers of myself and never show them off to anyone. I can say so much more in a breath and the shine of my eyes, everything at once. Only breathing. All the silent consonants tumbling over themselves like a nearly audible mist. [Say so much more in a breath.] Or the pattern of letters on a page in a book of words. Not the story or the plot. The pattern. The world is so complicated! Atoms make compounds, compounds join molecules and a desk or a table can be represented in code. Words. Letters. Read, they can kill or save. Between the lines there is more---electrons, quarks. Gravity. We understand gravity, we put it in standard drives. But when we jump we still fall to the ground. Maybe we understand how gravity works. Not gravity itself. The story, not the pattern. [Results are everything]. It's just doing its job. It won 't talk to you. ________________________________________________

Don't know what to say
Saturday, 16 August 2008 09:33:04

A lot of people have been asking how I'm doing. I don't mind the asking, not at all, but it can be problematic sometimes when you don't have the words, or can't get them out. Often I don't know what to say, and when I do the words kind of lock up inside me. I've probably seemed mostly unresponsive and I feel bad that anyone might feel locked out of my life. So I've made this. I like to hope that it might communicate what I can't. I don't know that it's perfect, but it feels mostly right. Could be that it only makes sense to me, but here is how I'm doing.

It won't work so why try?
Saturday, 16 August 2008 11:01:37

Hi there, Yesterday I had three people phone up and they asked how they could beat the early settlement fee on their loans. There is just one problem with that. YOU CAN'T BEAT THE EARLY SETTLEMENT FEE!!! It's not possible. It's applied to the quote and if you try to beat it by paying off so much and leaving enough for one payment then a fee is applied on the final payment. Either that or the loan just won't close and the remaining amount will just sit there and accrue a hell of a lot of interest. I told one woman that and she said she didn't care if that happened as long as she didn't have to pay the fee. She didn't seem to want to listen that the esf was only 58 days of interest and if she left £100 and the loan didn't close then she would get 7 years of interest. Another woman asked me what her loan balance was and then said she wanted to pay off all but £10 of that. Then she asked if she would get charged so I told her she wouldn't get charged for that payment. I never said anything about the money that was left so technically she can't complain if she gets charged the settlement fee on her final payment. I just needed to rant about the stupidity of some people. TTFN Jennifer -x-

I posted a new chapter for anyone interested. LOL!

I have ideas...I have even written them down
Sunday, 17 August 2008 00:49:49

Well, that about sums it up. I have a plotline for the next chapter of my story Capacity. I have a good idea, what happens, the twists, the fighting, the possibility of making withthe nasty for someone. And, yet, I sit in front of the 'puter and check my email, take silly quizzes, various other things. But no writing. Almost none. I haven't even worked on the novel I'm supposed to have done before my kid goes to school. I suck. I know hat I want Mal, Zoe, Wash, Kaylee, Jayne, Simon and River(and Xiaofan and Ruby) to do. I just can't seem to make it happen on the page. This may sound like I am shamelessly looking for a pat on the back... Well, I am. A nice, "We've all been there, Hun. You'll get through it." That's what I'm looking for. And I was hoping my fellow Browncoats wouldn't let me down. It's been a month and a half, and I *just* came up with the new outline. I'm in hell.

First Firefly Fic
Sunday, 17 August 2008 13:44:17

So I've posted it all. Everything seems positive. Makes me happy. Almost done with my 2nd story. Gonna get it beta'ed. I feel like maybe it's rushed. And then there's my Jayne fic...I can start working on it again. And then there's the Zoe one. *sigh* Why does Joss make characters that talk in my head so much! Curses!

Hello to my beloved browncoats
Monday, 18 August 2008 07:24:26

Well, here's me slowly making it back to normal and trying to rejoin the online world. It's been one of those years. Writing has been slow, but I'm not abandoning my fics, and I'm fixing to post a cool chapter in TLS shortly. My Firefly/Serenity Jewelry site got hacked, and I've taken a long time getting it back up. It's *mostly* working again and I have some new goodies on there. Oh, and my poor, poor out of date Firefly site! I have a couple of cool finds to review on there when I get a chance :) "Love keeps her in the air...."

Holy smokes - people actually read these?
Monday, 18 August 2008 17:21:29

I had a bit of a depressed moment over the weekend. I felt like I just had to talk to someone, but you know, sometimes everyone just has so much stuff on their minds, and you think, perhaps I should just not share right now. I mean, you have all these issues of your own. So I'll just have another cigarette...and write it down somewhere. I just want to thank all of you, without sounding cheesy. I appreciate it. Sometimes things are shitty. Sometimes things are shiny. Thanks for listening.

Xie Xie!!! I love you all!!! The spirit has moved!!!!
Tuesday, 19 August 2008 02:47:57

Well, pretty much what I wrote in the title line. And I really want to thank everyone who came to give me a cheer up, I really, really, really, really... Well, you get the picture. Special Thanks to Jane0904, abbey girl, Ncbrowncoat, Angellemarcs and cbsteve!! I have a new chapter beta-d and ready to go. It will be up shortly. I hope y'all find it enjoyable.  Go Browncoats!!! Joanna

The Unusual Suspects.
Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:58:46

On Friday night, I went to the X-Files Improv featuring Dean Haglund. (AKA Lone Gunman Langely.) This was part of the Fringe festival that was held in Edinburgh's old town.

"This Is Not A Fanfic" FAQ
Wednesday, 20 August 2008 06:23:49

(I keep needing FAQs for my series. Strange, that.) Who ARE these people? The real-life employees of a radio station in the Southern United States. The names have been changed, but otherwise, these stories are true. They bear suspicious resemblance to characters in a certain TV show no longer on air. No, I don't know why, so don't ask. Feel free to speculate about alternate universes and Joss Whedon's spy activities. When did you first notice all this? A young woman taking a tour through the station (it's a historic landmark) called me Kaylee, and was overjoyed that I knew who Kaylee was, even though I admitted to her that I hadn't really seen more than an episode or two. She sent me the entire Firefly series on DVD, and the more I watched, the more my jaw dropped ("oh my God I KNOW THESE PEOPLE!"). So I wrote about it, and posted it on FanFiction.net, who deleted it (they said it didn't have anything to do with the show). I posted the story here after some hesitation -- guess it took REAL fans to see it for what it was. Are you really a mechanic? I prefer the term "engineer", thank you. But yes. I also do voice work (that means "commercials") for the station, which began as an accident when I filled in for a sick coworker. Even got my own show now -- apparently, I have a "friendly" voice and a "spunky" personality. Hah! I'm confused. Who represents who? I suggest reading the first "This Is Not A Fanfic", but here's a handy list for those of you having trouble keeping track: WSRY is a tiny radio station that's been around for a number of years. It was about to die and be forgotten before Boss fell in love with it and bought it. Boss. He's, well, the boss. Our fearless leader. Our "captain", you might say. (M*l) Zelda. A tough lady, a former FBI agent, now (for whatever reason) answering phones as our receptionist and operations manager. She and Boss have been partners a long time. (Z*e) Sarah is used to prestige and pretty things from her former life in the big city. She works in sales, and has a job on the side that Boss isn't happy with (see "Moonlighting"). (I***a) Doc is Boss's son. He grew up in the North with his mother and older brother, who have never (as far as I know) come South to visit him. He is a medical student, and works a board shift here because it's quiet enough to study, and because his daddy asked him to. (Board shifts are pretty easy; you just check equipment every three hours after dark per FCC regulations.) (S***n) Lil Bit is the youngest and newest crew member. She hung around the station when she was little, and applied for a job the day she turned 18. She has a habit of saying and doing odd things with no explanation or apology. She has a board shift. (R***r) T is the WSRY "class clown". He keeps small plastic toys on his console, and impersonates celebrities in his spare time. T is the main board operator. (W**h) Kay does pretty much everything else around the station. He's the handyman, the security officer, the window washer... He used to have his own show, but was kicked off the air for making a crude joke. (J***e) Martin is a preacher. He has his own gospel music show on weekends, but he has a secret: He's really a wrestling announcer in his spare time. (B**k) Ellie is the spunky, friendly engineer. {Yay!) She has her own country music show. (K****e) So... they're obviously Firefly fans, right? No, they're not. When I asked, only one of them (T) had ever even heard of the show, but he hadn't seen it at all. I've tried to convert them to Browncoatism, but they don't appear too interested. I haven't mentioned the similarities to them. Yet.

fanfic feedback
Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:18:34

Following up on my last blog… I submitted the first chapter of my newest fanfic (to be posted momentarily) to my novel writing class, which included no Firefly fans, and even a few non sci-fi fans. Here’s a quick (and spoiler free) summary of the feedback. Not surprisingly, the criticisms were mostly about too many characters and too much plot for a new reader to follow, though they did understand that’s just an unavoidable part of the chapter being a sequel. And fanfic. None of them had even heard of the show, so sorting out the full cast was a tough task. Also, there was some confusion as to setting when the scenes shifted, which I hope I’ve clarified in what I'm about to post. A few writers in the class were not in any way sci-fi fans, and they were not comfortable with some things that I intentionally left vague. For instance, I have Alliance folks talking about finishing some mysterious business involving the captain, and one reader didn’t like the lack of fuller explanation. Of course, it must not have helped that everything this poor guy read was a mystery to him LOL! Seriously, we did talk about how strange settings and such are a part of sci-fi. I’ve read sci-fi novels where the first few pages made absolutely no sense at first take, but after reading the novel all the new technology and language made sense. I’m comfortable with that, with reading apparent nonsense and having faith that it will eventually be explained. My two classmates who’d never read sci-fi weren’t so into it. Also, one part of some original fiction I wrote for the class referenced future tech that anyone who’d read or seen Dune would immediately get, but these two guys needed more background. It was an interesting insight to me, that there’s not only lingo but a method of storytelling that sci-fi fans accept easily but other folks might not. The good feedback: I got much underlining of lines that pleased people – funny dialog mostly, and some descriptive phrases. (I had to credit Joss’s characters – so much personality! The teacher loved Kaylee, BTW.) One girl called my stuff very cinematic, easy to visualize. A man who had never read sci-fi was surprised at how relatable it was, both with Serenity’s parking ticket issue and how relationships would work when folks – real folks, not Star Trek idealizations – are stuck with each other on a space ship all the time. (I had to pass mose credit on to Joss for this too. Mainly, the idea that space travelers in the future will still be people just like us, facing the same kinds of challenges.) The teacher’s comments pleased me most. She loved my use of dialogue, how it's cut with description. She went into her theory of judging good use of dialogue by looking at paragraph length, at how “thick” sections and “thin” should interplay, which thrilled me to no end! I’ve had the paragraph length theory for some time but thought it was just a weird *me* thing LOL! Anyway, for both the fanfic and my original fiction I shared, she called me a born storyteller and I’m just so grateful for the confidence boost. I really was afraid of writing outside fandom, and now I think I don’t need to be. As for posting the fic: I know the Firefly fandom isn’t so lively as it was a few years ago. At the very best, this thing I’ve written will only reach a few hundred sets of eyes and pull out a handful of comments. But I have to say – I’m pretty insanely proud anyway. There surely is a lot to this chapter, and I think it came together well. It walks through all the BDH’s as well as the relevant OCs, reviewing the plot from the last book and setting up the action to come. I might comment more on the structure of this chapter later… some aspects of the upcoming plot depend on one basic thing being clear, but I didn’t want to spell it out explicitely. So the way I put this one together handles the problem implicitely. I love love love writing with layers like this – it felt almost architectural to put together. The squence of scenes definitely has an underlying shape in my mind, for whatever that’s worth

OMG.WOW!

The Olympics have hijacked me!
Friday, 22 August 2008 16:41:50

All of you wanting to read my version on how Mal obtained Serenity will have to wait a bit. I've been hijacked by the spectacle of sport known as the Summer Olympics. I've been up late every night watching Shawn Johnson and Nastia Lukin kick butt in women's gymnastics, Michael Phelps blow everyone out of the water in swimming, both men's and women's beach volley ball and on and on until late at night. In fact, most days I've been dragging myself to work after late nights with events "Live from Beijing". I've finally had enough and promise to buckle down and get out at least a small one shot before heading to Dragon Con next weekend. And I'm sure Dragon Con will ignite a spark for more fic.

Tis official

501st 4 life, b******!
Sunday, 24 August 2008 09:52:56

Yesterday, I attended Collectormania Glasgow, at the Braehead Arena. Basically, I wanted to treat the event like one, big photo shoot - not just a day to meet my idols. It's been a while since I did anything creative. There were only 14 shots on my camera's internal memory, so I had to make each shot count. An SD card would have used up waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much battery power. The camera gobbles them up like nothing else. :) Anywho.. Technicalities aside, here are a few shots from the day:

This is Disgraceful
Sunday, 24 August 2008 10:09:09

I need to rant about this because it is so disgraceful. Five years ago my friend's dad was in an accident. He used to drive a lorry for a crisps company and the lorry tipped over and he was left with serious head injuries. Since then he's been unable to work and has been on disability allowances. Now the idiots that deal with his claim (Department of work and Pensions) have decided to end his claim because he is too disabled to work but not disabled enough for incapcity benefits. As a result the only income my friend's family now has is his Jobseekers allowance; which is only about £35 a week. Seriously how can they justify ending his claim when there a millions of people claiming benefits when they are perfectly fit to work. My driving instructor told me that a bloke he knows willing gets cortisone injected into his spine so he doesn't have to work when there is nothing wrong with his back. My friend's dad is genuinely disabled and they won't help.

Okay, I'm going to recheck my timeline for internal consistencies and then I'm really really going to start scribbling again. I've got a file with several false starts.. I mean plot and dialogue concepts.. hrm hrm..., and I'm feeling guilty over leaving them to collect dust for so long. Other than that life continues apace. I've gotten my 9 year old excited about seeing Shakespeare plays outdoors, and if that doesn't count for good karma I don't know what does. They still haven't gotten rid of people we'd all prefer not to work with, nor have they gotten a backup RN in case I have a nervous breakdown and end up in jail for inflicting grievous bodily injury to people I do not enjoy working with at all. Meh. I'm going to pout over missing everyone at D*Con this year, but I promised to spend time with my son at an event I'm helping with that weekend, and I spent a whole week all by myself at Pennsic this year so I really can't complain. Sucks to miss out on people coming in from out of the country, far away parts of this country, and of course the wedding, and two of my favorite BDHs, and.. Yeah. But I still can't really justify whingeing. Not that I'd let that stop me, mind.

Browncoats Are Everywhere!
Monday, 25 August 2008 00:46:13

I was on my annual shopping weekend with my mom and my oldest this weekend. I stopped in a book store and couldn't find what I was looking for, so I decided to ask if they had it. I got to the desk and asked if they had a copy of the visual companion for Serenity. I got the weirdest response from the two college-age looking girls working the desk... (they said in unison with a dreamy eyed look on their faces) "I LOVE that movie!"

For all you con-goers...

I remembered a little travel tip today that many of you will need to know while going to the cons. This tip works especially well on getting wrinkles out of cotton materials: Take an empty spray bottle with you. (You can usually find them in pharmacy sections of department stores with those bins of little travel bottles.) Fill it with water when needed, and make sure it's set on "spray" and not "stream". When you unpack something that is wrinkly, LIGHTLY spray the clothing then smooth the wrinkles out. It should be unwrinkled and dry within a minute. Some heavier wrinkles may need a second try. If the material is other than cotton, like silks, be careful with it. I'm not saying this works 100% of the time, but it always works well with me on my jeans and t-shirts. Have fun at Dragon*Con and all upcoming conventions or travels!

Prospero's Legacy
Monday, 25 August 2008 11:02:33

Well, it's got going. Third chapter coming up now. And I can feel the shape of things, how they're likely to turn out. But as usual, stuff can change as I go along. But the main reason I am writing this is to say that it will probably take longer to get each chapter out. I've had such wonderful responses to the first two chapters that I want to live up to your comments, and that might mean taking longer than usual just to make sure. And I have found myself writing a small fanfic for CHUCK, too, but only because of Adam Baldwin. Life sure is weird, don't you think?

Life comes at you fast.....

:fork: Why is it that every time I make plans to write, Life Happens?! :banghead: Anyway, I am off to Texas for a few days, will be home sometime on Sunday and hopefully, with a new chpater to post. Forgive me and will see you soon.

The downers known as my fics...
Monday, 25 August 2008 18:22:17

To those of you still reading my peppy little fic series, I thank you for sticking with it. As far as the sad, reflective fics, the end is near! Black Days is the last fic arc thingy that delves wholly into the character's post BDM thoughts. After this, there will be actual plots and adventures. Honest.

New log for 8-26-08
Tuesday, 26 August 2008 15:16:45

Good morning fellow coats Thought I’d do a little blog updating. I’ve been working steady the last 14 days and it looks as if over the next month I won’t be getting a lot of off time either. I’m not complaining, the moneys good and I sure can put it to use, who couldn’t? Anyway this blog ain’t about that. It’s about a show that has taken my very soul, FIREFLY. There is something on Whedonesque that links to something posted by a fan (I think) that more or less describes browncoats as a cult. Are we a cult? The very word has me dreaming up headhunters in the jungle or people in some far off place worshiping smoke as it comes out of some sacrificial fireplace. I really don’t like to think of us as that. I remember reading years ago on the back of a VHS video package that “Mad Max” was very popular due to it’s “cult” following. I don’t feel like that but maybe I’m just not facing the truth. Anyway for those who wouldn’t know “Mad Max” did spawn a sequel, then another movie after that. I would love this to happen to “Serenity”. Although a new tv series is what I really want, 2 more movies isn’t anything to frown at. Anyway to get on with it, Joss’ emotional speech in the bonus material of our BDM is really what convinced me to rent FF. That was one of the best things I coulda done. I do believe that at that time in his life he was destined to create something fantastic and that it effected him as well as the whole cast and crew, as well as the FF fandom. That’s why I’ve stayed here and remain a loyal browncoat. It’s also why I don’t watch F*>

Holy Summer
Thursday, 28 August 2008 12:55:47

What can I say my Summer Glau obsession meter has hit a dangerously new high level, I cant write, listen to music eat or sleep without her being on my mind or having something remind me of her. The script I'm writing is on hold for now while I find a cure for this dangerous but irresistible pass time. Think am gonna write my feelings down in letters to her which i will post on here. This seems like the only thing to do but this is a worry.

Friday, 29 August 2008 22:19:49

We saw Alan and Nathan this afternoon. Absolutely hilarious together. They gave autograph collectibles to each of the people that asked them question. Super nice and just as pretty as ever. I've started loading pictures from this year's Dragon Con. None yet of the BDHs or any other Whedonverse peeps. Lots of great costumes though.

Fireflyfans.net the BEST!!
Saturday, 30 August 2008 09:31:51

Wow! Fanfic! Why did I never know about this?! So here's my second ever internet blog, and hopefully one of way many more. When I visited the Blue Sun section yesterday I was excited to find fan fiction. It's great stuff- it's entertaining, would be enjoyable to write, and really shows how dedicated we Firefly fans are. So, since I like writing, I thought why not write my own Firefly story? I've checked Firefly references, read other Fanfic and started planning for my story, now I just need the time! I've enjoyed the features of this site a lot. It was really great to see how many replies I got from a thread I started about future Firefly characters. My latest interest is, other than thinking about fanfic, virtual firefly. I'm checking out the Wash (but it's sorta confusing) and I've found a link to what looks like a great firefly rp on another site. I've applied as the free part of Simon, and my chances are looking good. Hopefully I can join in the fun on at least one of these rps soon, I'll just keep checking on them for replies. Anyhow, it's been great to see replies on this site, and even greater to discover this site. I've been going to the chat section a lot, but I think I have a bad time zone because of the lack of people there during my normal hours. Keep Flyin'!!

Dopplegangers and mad old women updated
Saturday, 30 August 2008 22:48:10

I wrote aaaages ago about my exact double (Julia or Erica or something) Well I was at my sisters house the other week and my Dad arrives and tells me how he thought he just saw me walking through a part of Rock Ferry* where I wouldn't normally be. He said it was odd as he knew I would never go there (we have our set routes through that area and we stick to them!) and he didn't recognise the people I was with. He said if I hadn't disappeared down a side road and he'd lost me he would have given me a lift to my sisters. In the end he was glad he didn't as he got there to find it wasn't me at all - i'd already been there for hours. But I can imagine that conversation when she called the cops on him - 'Sir I'm arresting you for soliciting and harrasment' 'but she looked just like my daughter!' 'you're a sick sick man Mr Young'. LMAO. * yes, the Rock Ferry that Duffy is on about (but believe me the begging for mercy that goes on there is really not of the romantic kind)
