Well, I just returned from the BDM and I must say all of our Firefly elements were intact...I do so hope we get our series back, that would be so shiny

Well I just came back from a 10:25PM showing in Arlington VA. The pretty big stadium theater was less than half full, I hope that is because it was pretty late! What follows are my reactions to the movie, so don't read further if you haven't seen it. As this is a blog, I'm not trying to convince anyone my opinions are right, so please no flames either. I just want to put down my thoughts on my blog so [i]I[/i] can remember them later. First off, I think this movie was great. I am going to write things that may sound like nitpicking criticism, but in general I liked the movie a lot. Not as much as the series themselves, but this movie was certainly better than any other movie out this year that I've seen. This brings up one of the main thoughts I've had, the difference between the small screen and big screen. Some professional reviewers have mentioned this, but the BDM sometimes feels like it has the sensibilities of a tv show. While I don't think this is necessarily true, there are a few points. It is obvious that a tv series, even an abbreviated season like Firefly's, has more opportunity for character development than a single movie. You don't go to see a movie (at least not anymore) to see character development. A good example to me is the Star Trek (TOS only, I hate TNG) series/movies. I derive pleasure watching Star Trek movies not to see further development of the characters I know and love, but to see them live and breathe and behave the way I expect them to do. I go back to watch the tv episodes to see the subtle and not so subtle tiny bits and pieces of scenes and dialogue that develop characters and their interaction with each other. Sometimes I even find something new or a different interpretation, even now after having watched each episode literally hundreds of times. Back to Firefly/Serenity. Having less than a full season means that I haven't gotten to know the characters as well as Star Trek ones. That means any new avenue such as this movie is to me an opportunity to see more character development. I don't know them well enough to just be content seeing them "live and breathe" (and die too). And as I've said above the movie is not the best way to get character development. Also, 2 hrs is not enough time to develop all of the characters. I am sure Joss made a conscious decision to focus on a few characters (Mal and River) at the expense of others to tell at least part of their story well, both for us and for people who havent seen Firefly. But to me, I really miss the development of the other characters (they seemed to be playing roles as opposed to living their lives) and to tell the truth I don't think there was that much development with Mal or River anyway. We may come to understand why River is the way she is, but that isnt development, thats more like a living history we just read/saw. For in essence, what made Firefly so special was not the ship (pretty and special as it is), Mal himself (dashing and heroic that he is), or any single character (although Inara IS hot :biggrin: ) What made me fall in love with Firefly was the way the characters interacted with each other, and how the interaction itself developed each character. Maybe why my favorite episode is Out of Gas, becase I think that episode more than any other was about how each character felt about the other, and the ship. In that sense, I would rate that one hour episode better than the movie. I have more to write about that, but this is already getting too long. I will have to break this up into multiple entries over days I guess. The other major point I thought was how the sensibilities of Joss and a tv-show based story affected my reaction to the plot. Call me heartless, but I didnt see that big a deal with what happened on Miranda. Well first I gotta say thanks to Joss and the cast for being part of the best movie I've ever seen and to all the browncoats before me that got the DVDs made and showed enough interest to have Universal pick up the movie rights. Now about the movie, one word, AWESOME. It made me fall in love with the crew all over again, even if Mal was a little meaner, and Kaylee wasn't as happy, it was still our same old crew. Lets say from the little I let myself know about the movie before hand, i knew someone that we loved would die, but I didn't know who. So i told myself , in the words of our late great Hoban "Wash" Washburn, "I'm a large, semi-muscular man, I can take it." And I almost couldn't. When it started with Book, i got all teary eye'd and thought "Hey that wasn't so bad" and then Wash got the short-end of the stick, and i could barly contain my sorrow. I'm off to my 3rd showing (second today) in the 2 days the movie has been playing and i'm sure i'll still get choked up at their deaths. I'm still waiting for my "totally legal copy" to make it to my computer so i can start writing quotes and checking out the things people pointed out on other boards. But be assured, I plan on making @ least 3 more trips to see it after tonite and buying the DVD when it comes out. So don't flame me for the above meantioned "legal copy"

CRIMULUS

I have to admit, I was extremely cautious when approaching this movie, because, after watching the trailers, so many things stood out to me as different that there was no way the movie could be any good. All the characters looked different, spoke differently. But, everyone seemed so enthusiastic about it, and the messages on this message board all insisted that if we wanted a sequel, we would have to pay good money and get this movie broadcast out to the whole world so that Joss and his compadres could rake in the big dough -- get the "signal out" so to speak. Well one line from the series sums up this movie perfectly. "He's being toyed with." It's the most obvious, unnecessary line in any episode (Shindig) that informs the most minimalized idiot who couldn't get figure it out. To me it only gains ground as a sentence when Inara blasts forth her second ironical masterpiece with "Why would I want to leave Serenity." Anyway, nearly every line in "Serenity" is exactly the same kind of sentence. Nothing actually ever happens to show you that something was going on, they just let the crew tell you all about it.

I have Fridays off, so not only did I see it, I saw it FOUR TIMES on opening day. And I went dressed as Wash. I had my hair dyed to match Wash's hair color exactly, and I wore a Hawaiian shirt and had with me two plastic dinosaurs. I wasn't alone. At the third screening, I saw a guy with a Jayne tuke and some people recognized me as Wash. I ran into some Browncoats and at the fourth screening, sat with the first gal that I had converted. I took notes on all four screenings. There was about a 21 minute lag between the start time that was advertised and the actual beginning of the movie. There were only two commercials (a Nissan split screen commercial and a Fruitopia commercial with a music theme to it) and five trailers (DOMINO, HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE, STAY, JARHEAD and DOOM). On a side note, at the 4th screening, people were laughing really hard at the DOOM trailer. As for attendance, the 1st screening was actually livelier than I expected. There were about 20 people there, msotly comic geeks and other Browncoats. I actually helped this guy in a wheelchair up the ramp. He commented on how accurate my Wash outfit was. I entertained him with my dinos, and another guy actually applauded me. The 2nd time had 33 people there. It was more of a family crowd. 3rd time the house was definitly packed, and there were more Browncoats there as well. One woman actually told me about a personal contest going on with someone at livejournal, and that my four ticket stubs would help. And the fourth was probably the best. There was actually a roped off line of people waiting to see the movie. I would expect something like that for HARRY POTTER, STAR WARS, LORD OF THE RINGS, but not for this. And with the 3rd and 4th screenings, people were laughing and gasping at the right moments. But as for the movie itself, let me say this. With this movie, for my 2005 ten best list, its three down, seven to go. I loved this movie so much. After the first time, I was so incredibly giddy. And even after seeing it 4 times in a row, admittedly I am a bit tired, but I still loved every bit about it. I loved the great opening and the 4 1/2 minute long credits shot that establishes the ship and the crew. I loved how it managed to streamline a gigantic mythology, backstory and character dynamics in less than two hours. I loved how it maintained it's humor, it's action, it's edge and it's general themes. I love how they even managed to elaborate on a few things that many people have been wondering about for the last three years. It's so hard to choose a line or a specific moment or scene since so many stuck out. I like how we see that Simon's toughened up a bit, in that is Mal pushes him, he pushes back. I like how when Kaylee's saying her first tearful goodbye to them she has to throw in the comment about how bad the Capison 38 engines are. And I like how when they're ready for the standoff against the Reavers, he finally admits to liking her, and how it empowers her ("To Hell with this. I want to live!!"). I was really shocked to see Wash die. Book I kind of expected to see shuffle off, but Wash was a genuine surprise and horror. It was a bit unsettling to see Zoe internalize her guilt so much. I mean, her husband dies, but she still keeps on with her stoic ways. I know it was in the middle of a Reaver battle and trying to expose the info that's proof that the Alliance inadvertently created the Reavers, but you think we'd see her cry at the end, or at least a sob. But other than that, I was definitly ecstatic to see the film. It succeeded both as a love letter to the fans, and as a way to initiate the uninitiated into our fold. I'm eager as Hell to see what would happen next. Oh, and I'm not going back to revise my stories. I might reference Miranda now, but I'm not going to eliminate Wash and Book from my narratives. Maybe once I finish up YCGHA, if I get any ideas, I'll continue on with the official canon timeline of events. And did anyone thing that Oti bar commercial that tri

I never got a chance to see it yesterday! I was there, had the ticket and then I got sick. The movie place was nice enough to give me a refund instead of the usual pass they normally would give. I would see it this weekend but I am busy and I have a thing to do on monday so I plan to see it on Tuesday! Go ahead and post about it (Those who have allready seen it) I dont mind reading spoilers I allready know some because I read them when people saw the pre screenings. It will just give me more to look forward. I was so mad! I was allready to go. I never plan on eating at that restaurant I had dinner at again.

So I’m sitting in the theater, waiting for the movie to start and I think, “How the hell did we end up here?” I first became addicted to Firefly when “The Train Job” first aired. (when Mal booted Crow into that engine:biggrin:) Back then I wasn’t expecting much from it as I didn’t at all care for Buffy or Angel and subsequently had a low opinion of Joss Whedon. But Firefly blew me away. I began to tune in every week. Then when rumors of cancellation started and the Firefly Immediate Assistance site went up I started making web banners, flyers, etc, to spread the word. Back then when I talked about Firefly I got blank looks in return and not a single person recognized my blue sun shirt. Then when cancellation struck and no other network would pick up the show, I almost lost hope. I remember other people on the boards making posts along the lines of “they took my gorram sky” and I remember really feeling like they did. In my mind I thought, “Well, that’s the end of that. Firefly is dead.” There were rumors of a movie, but I when I looked at how hard Farscape fans had fought for their show, and despite their numbers had still lost, I didn’t think we stood a chance. When the DVDs where released and the movie rumors turned out to actually be possible, I began to feel a glimmer of hope. I realized that despite everything, we were still flying; and to quote Mal; it may not be much, but it’s enough. Through the borrowing of DVDs and word of mouth, Firefly became more known, and the Browncoat ranks noticeably swelled. When the movie was officially announced I was, like the rest of you, thrilled. But still, somewhere in the back of my mind I had doubts. I can’t think of any cancelled TV show, that had been cancelled in less than one season after only 11 episodes, that had ever been made into a motion picture. Then, the week before the release I began to see random strangers wearing Serenity hats. I was actually stopped by a person who recognized the blue sun logo. It was in the theater, minutes before the movie started that I realized: we had won. Despite it all, we are [i]still[/i] flying. It was almost surreal, seeing the characters again, being back in the Firefly ‘verse. But yet here we are, despite it all. Looking back I think that that is the real message behind Firefly. [quote]You know what the first rule of flying is? Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds. Well, I confess it; I'm a little bummed. Not by the BDM (I'll hold off on spoilers because we have a lot of Browncoats who haven't seen 'Serenity' yet), I still find the movie to be exciting...thrilling even, and I've seen it 4 times now! No, I had my heart set on at least $15million gross and the number 1 movie in the box office. But the fact is, it isn't so bad. We made more money per screen than the #1 movie did, and to the theater owners that actually means something! Plus we had some really great reviews, my favorite is Roger Ebert's because I know he doesn't watch TV and had never seen 'Firefly', but he totally understood 'Serenity' and really enjoyed it. Which pretty much proves to me that you do NOT have to be a fan of the TV show to enjoy the movie...you only have to pay attention and watch the movie! So I guess I'll pin my hopes (I am an incurable optimist) on NEXT weekend! Because I am still hoping for $15million gross and the #1 box office! LOL

we saw the movie finally today! i thought it was a great way to spend 2 hours. but shucks, i really liked the series and, after seeing the movie, i just can't imagine they'll decide to pick it back up as a series. but anyhoo... after the movie, we drove the hour back home and stopped off just before, to pick up our new puppy. we decided to name her zoe. thank goodness we didn't name her wash, i woulda been like depressed. (we had picked out a name before we brought her home and before seeing the movie) had thought about marut, mojo, mara, mora, kaylee, and a ridiculous amount of others...then finally a few days ago settled on zoe.

Well finally things seem to have calmed down on FFF.net (for a few days had a lot of trouble just getting onto the site cuz of traffic). Well to get right to it, I made a new Firefly Website just now pretty much. Currently it isn't much of any thing besides a forum. So fellow Browncoats come and join the forum and help start a new comunity. When I say it isn't more than just a forum I mean that, except for the homepage. Don't worry though. I'll be adding more to it when I got time. Maybe get a lot done real fast, maybe take a lil' while. I'm not sure. I am a busy person constantly having one thing or another to do. My cousins and siblings were in town last weekend. We're all fans of "Firefly" together, and saw the movie last weekend as well as played the new RPG for Firefly they got. The movie was really awesome, like 20 episodes, crammed into 2 hours in a way. It was action packed and stayed true to the storyline and characters. Only small gripes would be not enough of Shepherd book, (He pretty much dies when you see him, and he was one of the main original crew after all), and the intro of the sorta gay Mr. Universe guy and having them bury him next to walsh and book. Walsh's death is prolly controversial among the fans, but personally I think it was necessary. Walsh is one of the real cool characters yea, but his story was more or less done and the movie needed some form of realism in it, when somehow every crew member makes it out alive, you tend to doubt the story. The RPG they have out is very vague, and hard to learn. It's cool and all, and they use a lot of the language in it and story recognition points, however it took us like 8-10 actual hours to figure out rules make custom characters and 4 hours of it alone on making this huge ass custom ship. We only ended up playing 3-4 hours and like I said it was kinda hard cause the rules and guidelines were so vague, it also doesn't offer much in the way of a very clear map of the various planets, which is something you'd want, since you'd want to be traveling the various places you'd heard in the movie: Like Canton, and Three moons and such. Clearification on where the planets are from eachother as well as the other planets, is not that good cause they give you a flat 2-d map, for what is a 4-d space, and not much of a key, and no scale. Otherwise it's sorta fun, we might try playing it again later.

(Also save yourself some hassle and don't visit this site until you've seen the film) $ $ $ $ What do you remember River wearing in the sequence just before she leaps into the fray? I would have sworn it was the blueish dress. So I noticed on my second viewing tonight that River is wearing the same (or a very similar) hospital green gown (with the dental bib straps) when she fights the Reavers as she is at the very begining in the hologram of the breakout. She wears something similar in her vision of Miranda through the viewpad. I don't think she was wearing the smock bit, and I couldn't tell if she's wearing the thermal underoos (with the silly metal plates), but the color looked exactly the same. I'm not entirely sure what the significance of this is, but I can't imagine that it happened by accident.

Made three friends watch Firefly before the movie was out. One lives in another state, saw the movie, loved it. >> 1 I took the other two opening night, along with one friend's girlfriend. She hadn't seen FF, she really liked the movie, I loved it, so did the two friends. >> 4 Have been telling everyone else to go see it, at least 2-4 say they will see it. Got my sister hooked on FF, we watched the whole series in two nights, and should be seeing Serenity together tonight. TOTAL SO FAR: 5 tickets, plus two more tonight, and then the others who say they'll go. UPDATE: I saw it last night, as I said I would. However, not only did my sister go, but she brought her friend, and one of the friends I took the first time came with again! So that's four more tickets! >> 4 TOTAL SO FAR: 9 tickets

I saw Serenity today! It was VERY cool! Joss did geat! I stilled cant believed Wash and Book were killed! Wash was the best character! Poor Zoe! The Reavers VS. River fight was cool! My friends daughter calls her River: The Reaver Slayer (Her daughter is a Buffy fan). I do hope there is a sequal! I plan to see it again this week! Maybe friday!

CALLMESERENITY

And there are no spoilers, so breathe free. The copier at the office hasn't been working the last few days. It was eating paper, which isn't good. So I had to call the repair guy to come fix it. He's a riot. Well, today, he starts pulling parts out of the copier and taking them apart. As he's showing me the parts, he's talking to me about how the such and such gets clogged when the whatzit does the thingy and he finds that if you just replace the whoozit and rewire the thingamajig than it fixes the problem and he doesn't even understand why these models have the whatsit anyway since they tend to just cause jams when they get worn out anyway. So he does his little rewire magic stuff and puts it all back together, jabbering away the whole time (and me not understand a word) and voila! The copier is fixed. And all I could think about was Kaylee rerouting the port coupling into the secondary grav boot or whatever the heck it was she did when she fixed Serenity in OoG. Just thought I'd share my little Firefly moment.

So here's a different take on a review for SERENITY. I am part of the movie reviewing team at www.horror-web.com I recently lured my partner into watching FIREFLY which he loved so rushed out to watch SERENITY. Even though we review horror movies we decided to push the envelope and do a dual review and here it is. Enjoy! (BTW, I am Jekyll) ************************************************* WE KNOW IT'S NOT HORROR! Now on with the show! Jekyll : Jekyll & Hyde are breaking the rules and doing a review for SERENITY. No power in the 'verse can stop us! Hyde : None at all unless you're the Wench and then we apologize in advance. Jekyll : Yes, a big ole apology and I'll take some lashings if really needed to redeem this duo. Hyde : Hopefully that wont be necessary-- but we love Joss Whedon and the worlds he has created in the past. So we should support him even if it's not out and out Horror. Jekyll : Although horror fans, you will get a good amount of horror related moments. Can't go wrong with cannibals is what I say! Hyde : Yes, Joss shows off his suspense skills and creates a few creepy, edge of your seat type moments. Not to mention a few not-so-pretty images. Jekyll : Yes, kudos to the F/X department when it comes to skeletons tied to the front of a ship....opps, have I said too much? Hyde : No, not at all. But fans jonesing for a little tough chick fighter action (and who doesn't miss Buffy) will be throwing their hands in the air and screaming for more. The film is full of fighting and sci-fi action, but at the same time has a heart, and plot which you don't find often. Jekyll : And for those who are hesitant because they either know nothing about the incarnation of FIREFLY (shame shame) or haven't seen a preview for SERENITY don't you fret....the movie will appeal to fans of the show and the newcomers....just ask Hyde. Hyde : Yes, I'd only just started watching the show (which is damn good and worth the 49.99) But the film welcomes all in and gives enough back story to move the newcomers along smoothly but any fan of Buffy or Angel will notice Whedon's knack for clever writing and character development. Not to mention his love of surprising the audience. Jekyll : Yes, the actors in these roles were meant to be - they deliver the story with precision and keep you locked on the screen to the very end. No dozing off here (unless you are me and on viewing number 3 after the weekend premiere party) Hyde : Tsk tsk Party animal Jekyll I can't help it. How often will I have the chance to dress up as the man they call Jayne Hyde : LOL Jekyll : On to some important aspects for reviewing. Comments on the F/X Hyde? Hyde : Amazing, the show and the movie both show a very realistic and believable future with just a little sci-fi flare thrown in for fun. Hyde : But let's talk cast for a moment-- most of the cast you've seen before in the Buffy/Angel verse (plus if you watched the show) They are great talents, not just there because they're pretty, they're there because they are a talented crew that works well with each other ( not to mention all very pretty anyway-- hey it doesn't hurt) Terrific actors who pull you in almost as much as the storyline - you care about them and what happens to them Jekyll : And to throw in a quote from the show to back that up...."because we are so.....very....pretty!" Can't go wrong with eye candy in the movies, both male and female! Hyde : Yes, not to mention Gina Torres who just plain kicks ass-- not as much as Summer Glau (who plays River) who not only is gorgeous but kicks ass better than Buffy. Jekyll : Whedon and his love of powerful women just makes me feel all giddy! Hyde : Me too! I think what appeals most about SERENITY is the fact that it's a fun movie. You have to think a little, but at the same time can enjoy the onscreen action and witty banter Jekyll : ....and you feel like you are on that ship with the rest of them. Any movie to pull you in for a couple hours out of this crazy world is definitely worth admissio

Well.... I was going to write a short review about the novel... but The Signal (the Firefly/Serenity podcast) has a no spoiler interview with Keith R.A. DeCandido, the author of the novel. His interview is actually pretty good and explains a lot about the differences and similarities between the novel and movie. Check it out. In my opinion, the novel is great. I've read books that movies are based out of, and the books are almost always better then the movie. I've read only a few books that are based on movies though. The last few I've read disappointed me. I can't really say that about this one. Watching the movie was great. Reading about scenes from the movie, from the point of view of Mal, River, Inara, The Operative, etc. etc. was even better. The author also did a great job of referencing events from the comic books and the TV series. It's one of the better novelizations I've ever read... and the best part is I don't have to wait for the DVD. I still squeezed in a review… cool! Anyways, pick up the book when you get chance. See the movie first, though... Oh... and get the comics too. And Pocket Books, which published the novelization, is cleared for two more books. Looking forward to what those may be. I was just watching some of BUFFY season 5 tonight, and it actually struck me about something that not many people realize about Joss. With 7 seasons of BUFFY (6 1/2 if you think of season 1 as half a season since it only had 12 eps), 5 seasons of ANGEL and half a season of FIREFLY (14 eps in total), Joss Whedon has personally created and supervised 11 years worth of tv in an 8 year run, as well as his works on other shows as well. We all know television is an incredibly cutthroat and fickle business, and extremely taxing for any creator/producer, not just the successful ones. I realize that Joss has his team of writers and other producers to help him out, but every episode of those three shows each had Whedon's personal touch and stamp of approval. And to have that much stamina to handle the pressure from yourself, your colleagues, your bosses, and even more daunting the millions of fans who hang on to every single word you write and episode you produce and may even know the show better than you do is a Herculean task that very few people, if any, can handle with as much grace and humor as Whedon. If anyone should whine about him not coming back to tv, you should say to them "I'd like to see you try to accomplish what Whedon has, and have the same opinion afterwards." I wouldn't be surprised if Whedon decides to take a break from tv for a while, or even for good and do WONDER WOMAN, GONERS and hopefully SERENITY 2,3,4,5 and 6 (six is a good round number for any film franchise, I find) and whatever the Hell else he decides to do. After producing 244 hours of tv, I think he deserves a long break from it by going at a slower pace of two per. Hell, it's not like he needs the money. With BUFFY and ANGEL in syndication and the DVD sales of all three of his shows in the hundreds of thousands, he could walk away from the industry altogether and live off royalties for the rest of his life. Oh, an just for an update, I've now seen the BDM FIVE times in the theatre. Top that.

so here it is. i changed my mind from inara to mal. obviously. i called it "big damn hero"-- i swear this is not boring please try! Joss Whedon mixed two parts science fiction (“This is just like Science Fiction!” “We live in a spaceship, dear.” –Wash and Zoe in “Objects in Space”), one part western (“Just an honest brawl between folk!” -Mal in “Train Job”), and an incredibly devoted fan base to create the cult phenomenon Firefly. Recently translated into the film Serenity, Firefly is the story of nine crewmembers trying to survive after a civil war in a solar system of moons that were divided seven years before between the Alliance, a distant government centered in the ‘Core’ planets, and the Independents of the frontier worlds on the ‘Rim’. The Alliance won the terrible war 500 years in the future and the Independents, or Browncoats, disbanded. Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds is the captain of this mismatched band and was a sergeant of the Browncoats in the war. Once an idealistic young member of a revolution, Mal is now a disaffected member of society doing what he can to protect his crew and survive in these harsh surroundings. Disaffecteds but rarely show any interest in politics and government. They are the least well educated- 70% with no college experience- and struggle with financial issues, because of this they are highly critical of loose immigration policies because they heighten the chance of job loss. More Disaffecteds own guns than that national average in America and while Disaffecteds are by no means all rustics they tend to live away from the urban areas. Mal doesn’t meet every single one of these typology characteristics (who does fit perfectly into their party lines?) but it is the best fit as evident by his typology quiz at www.people-press.org. Mal’s distaste for politics stems from his inability to recover from his loss in the war. If a man can get a job he might not look to close at what that job is.” (“Train Job”) Disaffecteds mostly believe that it is impossible to succeed without aid but still do not approve of government funding for welfare. Mal reflects a similar attitude of independence when he days “Next time somebody tries to kill you, you try and kill them right back!” (Our Mrs. Reynolds) Many Disaffecteds in America don’t approve of immigrants because of the chance of job loss but Mal lacks a hostile approach to the issue. He understands the new settler’s plight- “once a moon is terraformed they’ll drop a colony down on it with some blankets, a herd and maybe a hatchet.” (“Serenity”- pilot) But since the colonists are usually immigrating to the outer Rim, they rarely figure into his plans. Perhaps this is why his “live and let live” philosophy works so well. Mal is quite fond of weaponry, appropriate considering his surroundings. His dedication to his pistol is evident during every episode. Disaffecteds report to owning more guns than the total national average, just like Mal and his Crew own more than the average family 500 years in the future. (live action role play) we have started up one for firefly and it is a blast. we plan to have a shindig of our own and we just want people to come and have fun. it's going to be all in costume with a story line going through the night. food drink and entertainment will be there and i just can't wait. the only down side i can think of is that i have to make a big dress because my character is just like kaylee. it'll still be a lot of fun and i look foward to it.

GUNRUNNER

Well the 1st time I went was with my dad (a fan from the original TV airings just like me) on opening day. The place was about half filled, but in the parking lot I met a fan who said the movie was great (we agree!) Then my buddy Steve comes up from Pensacola (he’s in the Navy and a Fan) and me, his brother (Fan), John (US Army and Fan), and Don (Saw some of the show before we went and was intrested) all go to see the movie. I walk in with my Jayne hat and a Blue sun shirt on and guess what happens when I go get some popcorn: Concession stand girl: Nice hat! How many times have you see it? Me with a big gorram smile: Thanks. This makes two times. That was just fantastic. Everyone really liked the movie. I hope everyone else has had equally good experiences see the BDM.

So, unlike some, I was unable to get into any of the pre-screenings. But maybe that wasn't totally a bad thing. The BDM was definitely worth waiting for. No spoilers here -- but I will say that part of it felt just like getting punched in the gut. Yeah, so went to the theater right after work so as to get in line and wait for the rest of my family to get there. Line wasn't very long so I was hoping a lot more people would show up. The theater was about half full. Kinda disappointing. Watched movie. Loved movie. Tried to leave theater. Wow! It was like being in Disneyland on New Year's Eve (or any major party holiday). You couldn't move it was so packed. They had theater staff creating one little walkway just so people could get in and out of the theater. That's the kind of crowd we need to keep this thing going! So take a friend (or ten)and go get in line. Let's keep the numbers up!

As anyone who knows Joss knows: when you die in the Whedonverse, you evidently get more screen time. Also, whenever someone shows signs of happiness or contentedness, oops, they're dead. So, be sad, but don't despair. We'll see more of our heroes in the not too distant future. (P.S. I know these rules belong to Buffy/Angel, but who's to say it can't fit Firefly too? Here's hoping.)

MALLICE

I am in love, oh yes, deeply in love. I saw the movie last week, took me a while to finally post about it, but even now I am still in aw. I think the movie was just astounding! I think the characters were developed just right for the movie, the story was intriguing and full of suspence, it certainly kept me on the edge of my seat. The tragic loss of two characters was very upsetting, but it also didn't ruin the movie for me either. The only thing I felt was odd, was that it kind of felt like the "Objects in Space" episode. Not that I'm really complaining. I hope they make another movie, or maybe even start the series again, but if they don't do either, I wouldn't exactly be disapointed either, because I feel if they end it here, it ended well, but none the less, I want more!! Hehe. P.S - I read somewhere that Joss's birthday is June 23rd? If it is, that's my birthday too, haha, that's so freaking cool, because my next birthday wish would be to meet him. But now I'm just dreaming...or maybe it's just the allergy/sinus medicine talking? :P

OK, this is gonna be more than a bit wordy. But these are things on my mind right now that I feel compelled to share. You may care, you may not, but I'm saying them anyway. I'm oddly amused at the "outraged" fans who are "calling Joss out" over the events in the movie. (Yes, I have seen it.) Apparently the fan base has become divided; one over-zealous poster on the OB went so far as to wish cancer (I kid you not) on Joss, his family, and those who supported events in the story. To this fan and those like him/her, I have one thing to say. Get a fucking life. Yes, the "Firefly" universe means a lot to all of us. Otherwise we wouldn't be here talking about it. But in the end, it's just a movie. Say it with me: IT'S JUST A MOVIE. Does that mean I don't have a hard time accepting what happened? No. But it's Joss' world. It's his story. How he tells it is his decision and his alone. And as a writer, I have to respect that. Besides, it's over and done with. So shut up about it already. (Harsh, you say? Yeah. So is wishing cancer on someone. I wouldn't do that to my worst enemy. That poster was a dumbfuck.) Moving on...I have started my fanfic H&S. But, due to personal conflicts (I'm starting to realize the less I say, the less stupid I sound) and so-called "real life" responsibilites, it will be some time before I'm able to finish it. How long? I dunno. Maybe next month, maybe never. I hate to leave a piece unfinished, but it's long past time I re-devoted myself to my own universe. Joss' was fun, the characters very human and dear to me, and I find "Firefly" and "Serenity" inspiring. Now it's time I did my own thing. So, that said, I may not be back around here for a little while. Or maybe even a long while, it's hard to say. Those of you who care, thank you. Your kindess will not soon be forgotten. * ramblings and musings and evidence that I probably see sub-texts that don’t exist… * So we went to see the BDM again during the week. Man, I love this movie. There are new things I’m picking up each time I see it. For instance, when they’re repairing the ship, Zoe is welding on the front of the bridge. Presumably she’s repairing the hole that a certain spear left as it passed through the front of Serenity on its way to terminating in the chest of her husband and ripping out all of our hearts in the process. My thought was, “Damn. Couldn’t someone else have repaired that particular section? Did it have to be Zoe?” But I digress. In addition to the action on the screen there was a drama playing out in the seats in front of us. There were two young men, seated with the customary empty seat between them so they could see the movie together but not be too together. Kind of the same logic, I guess, that leads us men to always move towards a urinal with an empty on either side. One young man had clearly seen the movie before. The other young man had not. This was readily apparent because the veteran was laughing heartily at all the jokes right from the get go while the novice took a while to get into the flow of things. It’s a dynamic I’ve noticed in the few showings I’ve been to where the majority of the people in the audience have not seen the movie before. It takes about a half hour before people start laughing at the funny lines. My speculation is that it takes about that long for someone to get acclimated to the dialogue, the patois. By the end of the movie they’re clearly engaged but it takes a certain amount of time for them to come up to speed. I have yet to see Serenity in a theater that is silent throughout the entire movie. The movie just seems to suck people in, no matter their prior experience with this ‘verse. The product sells itself. It’s that good. All you have to do is get a person in the theater. Nothing more. Well, the veteran didn’t get that memo. His laughter was just a bit too loud and on a couple of occasions he reached over, tapped a shoulder and pointed at the screen to make sure his friend got the joke (damn my peripheral vision). There was almost an element of desperation as if to say, “It’s really, really, really funny. Don’t you see?” Fortunately, it didn’t take long before the phenomenon I mentioned earlier took hold and his friend was laughing and gasping along with everyone else. It was something I noticed peripherally and didn’t really think about because of how much I was enjoying the movie. But as we were walking to the truck I remembered that little drama and I had a kind of epiphany. It seemed to me like the veteran did not have any faith in Serenity. That he felt the product didn’t sell itself well enough and needed his help. Put him in a loud sports coat and he could’ve been indistinguishable from a used car salesman. We’re all a little bit nervous about the possibility of a sequel. And we know what the deal is, that Serenity has to do better at the box office. But what may be overlooked in our desire to get enough money to green light a sequel is that the movie itself is damn fine entertainment. It’s a thrilling ride. Where we can help is by getting people in the door. But once their butts are in that seat our job should be done. Let the product sell itself. Quality wins out. Don’t be that guy.

I'm up to the point where I'm gonna do everything in my power to see it be made into a sequel. god i feel like such a dork. i can't help it. i love this show so much. i'm talking obsessticatin' here. i haven't been this hung up on something since i discovered sex. so i discovered this site at work. i have no access at home so i'm typing this junk here up at work. what really sucks about this obsession is how broke i am. baby on the way (it's a girl. my wife tried to convince me to name her Vera based on Pink Floyd some time back, now i think i'm gonna try and talk her back into it)... moving into a new apartment, catching up on bills and trying to kill debt... but now i want all this damn stuff! i found this dude on here who has replicas of some of the weapons from the show. now, i'm a collector of, well, collectables. I've got a nice collection of knives and rep-guns. i've got a Key to Hell and a Sandman statue that kicks all ass. So those guns, I want very very badly; at the very least Mal's. Maybe I'll get it as a Christmas present for myself, hoping he has some left. We'll see. Well, I suppose this is enough for my first bLog ever. I don't have any others but this is kinda fun... liberatin' like. I'll try to keep it up.

I went to see the BDM. Loved it. Laughed, cried, kissed 8 bucks goodbye. I was so proud of myself that I actually got Mal's reference to an Albatross. I knew high school Lit class would come in handy. Thank you Mrs. Elser. For those of you weren't in my class or had a teacher not so into poetry, the poem is by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Its called "Rime of the Ancient Mariner". Anyway, I ended up not dressing up. I did wear my "no power in the 'verse can stop me" shirt, though. I also wore a brown coat. Well it was khaki, but it was the best I could do. I hope the movie does well. I was a little dissappointed at the turnout for Manassas. It was a wonderfully funny, action-packed and touching movie. I'd love to see a sequel. I thought it was funny how you could tell the true browcoats in the audience from people who had never seen Firefly. There were parts of the movie that the newbies were like "Oh, huh, that sucks", while I actually yelled out "NOOO!" I would have added "MY GOD WHY!?", but I didn't want to be too obnoxious. I was thinking it, though. And for fans of Aquateen Hunger Force: I was flipping those reavers the bird as hard as I possibly could.

For background, see previous blogs. So, I had politics used against me; I used politics against them :evil: Basically, what I did was force a situation in which they couldn't say no. What I did was talk to the U that I'm a visiting student at and see if someone there would be willing to supervise me. Someone was and all became arranged. Now, when asking for a letter of permission to do it at my current U, my home U has two implications if they say no. 1) No, that U is not good enough for us. Well chair, what do you want me to tell them when I go back since all is arranged? 2) No, you have to do it here and we won't let you. Why? I have already gotten my two required supervisors. Are you saying that I can't do it just because it's me? In either case, can we say political fallout? So, I see the chair and explain that the courses are equivalent. Show him my current U's calender and explain what I've arranged. He said that he'd have to talk to the honours committee before he could render a decision. Why? I say. All a letter of permission is is to see if the courses are indeed equivalent. As I have explained they are. The honours committee has nothing to do with it anymore. Pause. Let me photo-copy that page from the calender. It took some time for that photo-copy to be made. I gather that he did more than just photo-copy that page. When he came back in, he just said, sure that'll be fine, I'll sign it. He also stated that he liked (can't think of the exact word he used) my motivation/perseverance in getting the honours project. That it would serve me well in grad studies should I end up there. Then we talked a little bit which of course quickly ended up being about the failings of the current structure of the honours project. I mentioned some alternatives that they might think about implementing that I found at my current U. He photo-copied those pages as well and off I went. One thing struck me though. While we were talking he mentioned a few things that hinted that he didn't want to deny me a project in the first place. That the decision was indeed a political one and not based on my merits as a student. I imagine that he felt, as figure head of the department, that he had to defend the committees decision regardless of how he felt on the matter. I think I've made an enemy in that department. At any rate, I got my honours project, and a topic. Now comes the work... lots and lots of work. Happy happy :biggrin: :biggrin:

I guess I can start by saying I have been watching my box set everyday, regardless of how many times I may have seen each episode. I guess I can also say that I have seen the movie many times. Last night, I saw for the first time what many consider to be the best episode of BUFFY last night. Goin in, I was a bit dubious. But after the first ten minutes, when I saw Buffy put her hand to her mouth after she refers to Joyce as "the body", I'm inclined to agree with them. I knew it was coming a mile away, but just seeing Joyce sprawled over the couch, her skin already pale and that wide eyed vacant look in her eyes, just terrified me more than any monster Joss could come up with. And seeing how all the characters reacted to the news and how they cope with the whole thing also really moved me. Especially Anya's little speech where she says "She's dead and I don't know why." That's it right there. That one line sums up the human race's attitude towards death. I like how the ep deals with the physical aspect of death and the initial reaction in those first few hours of the news that someone close to you has died suddenly without warning. It leaves the spiritual aspect of it aside, which is something that you would expect to be dealt with first. I think the only other bit of tv that deals with death on such an intimate level that "The Body" did is all of SIX FEET UNDER, especially the last few episodes of the series. I know some people might think "How dare he compare that ep to anything that other show had produced", and vise versa. I'm a fan of both of those, and I actually think they're good companion pieces to how tv deals with actual death. I'd be interested in hearing what Joss Whedon or Alan Ball would have to say about each other's work. The ep actually made me think about how I actually have perceived and dealt with a death in the family. It's happened twice for me. In 97, just before my 12th birthday, my Aunt Jill and Uncle Phil were expecting their third child. And we were cleaning out the combine (it was harvest around the end of August), and my grandpa had come to us to tell us the news that the baby was a stillborn. We stopped work then and we went back to the house to tell my mom the news. My brother and my dad had gone ahead to tell her the news and I had to go to the house first for some reason or another. But when I got to the shop where she was working on a project, she was already sobbing and cursing. We had a group hug, but then we kinda went our own ways. I agree with a lot of Joss's comments about death and how it actually splits us apart more than brings us together. I remember after that, I was in the basement by myself, just grieving. And to deal with the grief, I put on a movie. I didn't want to watch an action flick, or anything in which someone died. So I ended up putting on THE SOUND OF MUSIC, of all goddamn things. In retrospect, it didn't really do anything for me (the movie never did anything for me any time I had watched it). Eventually, I did get over it, and we went back to work that afternoon. It was actually a few days before Princess Diana was killed, so I always thought that Di was taking care of the baby up in Heaven. Unlike Joss, I do believe in the "Big Sky Bully", and I think that death is an essential component to life. Life and death is the ultimate ying/yang principle. One cannot exist without the other.

The second time it happened was a few years ago, actually. It was with my Grandma Fran. Of the two gma's I had, she was my favorite of the two. She was really into movies, she was friendly and funny and warm. Everything you want a grandma to be. And she was also a chainsmoker. She went in for a checkup at the hospital, and she didn't come out. She had lung cancer and brain tumors. She only had a few months, if any at all. I only saw her twice when she was in the hospital and she looked bad. I was still able to talk to her and tell her all my feelings. All of us did, so there wasn't that sense of "I'll never get to tell her how I feel". It was a few months later that I think I got a phone call or my brother Matt told me that she had died, and I didn't like bawl or do anything theatrical. Instead, I was a bit ambivalent to it. I mean, it was inevitable, so it didn't hit me or anything. This was just a confirmation. And I think at the end of April was when we had the service. Her body was already cremated, and so the whole family came to bury her ashes. They said that we could leave some stuff with her, so I wrote sort of a final letter to her with some dialogue from an ep of SIX FEET UNDER about death, where this one character asked "Why do we have to die?", as well as a toonie (a two dollar coin, for those unfamiliar with Canadian currency) as to pay the ferryman. I don't remember if anyone else did that, but I felt like someone had to do it, so I did. After the service, I kinda walked around in a daze through the graveyard with U2's "Kite" playing in my head. But the one thing I remember the most was seeing my Grandpa Maynard cry. I had never seen him cry before, so it really struck me then that she really was gone. That one comment that Joss made in the commentary track for "The Body" ep about how we fantasize/deny the death during that early process actually happened. My mom was the first one of our family to actually see my gma's body. The nurse had called her to tell the fam that she was dead. And the nurses wern't supposed to touch her before my mom got there. And when my mom got there, when she saw the body, she though "Well that nurse was an idiot. She's not dead. She's asleep." Her body was positioned so that she looked like she was sleeping, and not dead. But then it hit her that she actually was gone. A year later, my Mom and I went up to Unity (small town where they lived), since everyone was there to go through the house, because he was selling it. In a year, he had met another widow and got married that weekend. And so most of my mom's side of the family were there to go through the house to see if there was anything that we wanted. I went through their vinyl collection, and the only thing I found of interest was a Simon and Garfunkel album and a The Who album. My cousin got The Who, and I got S and G, as well as some books off my gpa's shelf and a magnifying glass. And when we were driving home with the truck full of furniture, my mom told me how my gma and gpa actually were. And it was a toxic relationship. How my gma was just miserable living in Unity. And how this dent in their kitchen sink was created when during an arguement that was so heated, my gpa threw a coffee mug into the sink hard enough to make that dent. And how my Aunt Joyce, who was the youngest of my Mom's siblings would be caught in the middle of it and how she's call my mom or my Aunt Joan just sobbing in a phone booth. That weekend was the hardest on Joyce actually. She was a complete wreck the entire weekend (I actually walked in on her when she was crying and was weirded out by the whole thing). And then today, I was talking to my mom about this (I made sure to tell her that I loved her), and she told me some stuff I hadn't heard before about all this. She said that me and my brother actually brought the best out of her. That she was better to me and Matt then she ever was to my mom. This, as well as the knowledge of how toxic of a family situation my mom lived with, really startled

Some of you will remember that last month I moved from Indiana to South Carolina to be closer to my son. I quit my job (obviously!), and didn't have a new one lined up. I'm not wealthy, and I was starting to worry about money. As it is, I'm having to sell the stock I had in my old company for rent money. A little over two weeks after my arrival I signed with a temp agency because they had a job they thought I would be perfect for. This past Tuesday I interviewed with the plant manager, and a day later I was offered the job. I start Monday! I'm going to be working in, and eventually running, the shipping department for a brass forging plant in the Midlands/Upstate area. Lots of Inventory work involved, which is my specialty. And the plant is only half an hour from the town my son lives in. I'm really thinking this could work out well. Of course, for 90 days I'm working for and being paid by the temp agency, making 2/3 of what I was making in Indiana, but I can survive on that for a while. It's not job-related, but there is a problem, however. My father is a minister, and an elder in our church. We did a search before I left, and there are no Mennonite churches in the entire STATE of South Carolina! I'm by no means an evangelical, and some would probably call me a heretic, but not going to church isn't an option for me anymore. I'll just have to start looking...

CALLMESERENITY

I drove about an hour to go see Serenity last night. I had to go see it by myself because I can't find another browncoat anywhere near me. I got there about 15 minutes before the movie started so I rushed to get in line and get a ticket. There were more people just kind of standing around then there were in line so I moved my way through them to find an actual line. There was a group of four teens standing in a huddle near me. One of them said "What do we want to see?" That was my cue, right? So I turned around to them and said "You want to see Serenity." The guy nearest me made a face and said that it sounded like a chick flick. What an insult to both me and my movie! So I told him that it was most definitely NOT a chick flick, that it was action/adventure/horror/suspense/sci-fi..and the same kid cut me off with "I don't like sci-fi." To which I responded, "This is NOT Star Wars." I give him a brief outline of the premise for the movie, he's still not convinced. His three friends are just standing there. Finally, I tell them that if they want to see Serenity, I'll buy all their tickets. Still they looked uncertain. So I got in line and when it was my turn to buy my ticket, I looked back at them. They were still just standing there, unsure of what to do (This is a thing I hate about teenagers. This is a thing I hated about teenagers when I WAS a teenager!) I tried my hardest, I did. I bought two tickets anyway. And the movie was showing at the screen in the furthest deepest recess of the theater, way way in the back. I think the room sat 50-75 people and it was only 1/2 full. Not another single browncoat in the room (you can kind of sense these things, can't you?) But what it did have was the crying baby, the person who coughed through the whole thing and the woman behind me who kept kicking my seat and didn't get the hint even after I moved down a few seats. They didn't laugh once until "I need your authorization code..bang bang bang...okay!" I mean, the whole exploding sequence got nothing! And then afterwards a few people hung out during the credits and discussed it: "Wasn't this a cancelled TV show?" "What was up with prostitute?" (I bit my cheek not to yell back "The term is [i]Companion[/i]!") and other clueless stuff. Oh well, at least now maybe some of them will go hunting for more info. And I was the only one that stayed till the end. I had to stay till the very end to hear the Ballad of Serenity. It's like a thank you note from Joss. And another funny thing: I got home after midnight and crashed, I was so tired. But I woke up abruptly at 6:30am. In my Serenity filled mind, a flash bomb went off! In reality, it was probably thunder and lightning, but I had earplugs in so I didn't hear the thunder, I just probably felt it and saw the lightning flash. Still, it's very startling to wake up to what you think is a flash bomb!

Warning! Spoilers for Serenity (the movie, of course). And also some serious rambling. You have been warned! So ever since I've gotten back on the 'net (lost our service last weekend of all weekends) I've been pretty disheartened by the animosity that seems to be growing between fans. There seems to be a divide between those who hate Serenity and think Joss betrayed everyone and everything and those who love it. What disheartened me the most was the viciousness displayed in many posts (this was mostly at the 'versal boards and to a lesser extent the OB, I haven't noticed it much here, but I also couldn't get on here at the time so it could all be archived by now. Either way I still love this place best :biggrin:). Anyway, my main query/question/pondering is this: Most of the dislike towards Serenity seems to revolved around the decision to kill Wash, I've seen countless threads saying that while there may have been some character development as a result, there was no effect on the plot and was therefore gratuitous and only done to scare the audience into thinking everyone would die. (And to be fair, during the last 20 or so minutes I was actually wondering if all the talk of a sequel was just a ruse and that [i]everyone[/i] was going to die). But I thought that there was an effect on the plot. Zoe's decision to hold the crew's position by the blast doors seems to be a response to the fact that her husband is dead, and the realization that it's unlikely any of them were going to live. [i]Mal wanted them all to stay together,[/i] but he trusted Zoe's decision. And if that doesn't affect plot development I don't know what does. Imagine if Mal had the rest of the crew with him during the final fight with the Operative. I imagine it may have ended quite differently (and not necessarily for the better). Am I just reading too much into the exchange between Mal and Zoe? Because I don't understand why everyone is so mad. I also don't understand why anyone would line up at 8am(!) outside a store to buy butter(!) but that's a story for another time...

This is it. It was fun folks, but... I dunno. We needed, according to a responder to one of my later posts, to rake in about $80 million for a sequel. Hows it look so far? Hm? Are we doin alright? No, of course not. I would like to side with another poster in news and events about how people are sitting there in fantasy land saying, "Numbers are irrelevant" or "Can't stop the signal", or sitting there humming the Firefly theme song with a far away look in their eye whilst outside of lala land, our movie is dieing. Unless we get a lot more people to help and see the movie, or Bill Gates gives $80 million to the sequel, Serenity is gonna flop. I hope I don't wind up in troll country for this, but no one reads my posts anyway, so I can rant all I want to an empty stadium. I want Serenity to pull through, and I'm pretty darn sure you all want it too. I'm a young one who was only introduced to Firefly late last year, so I don't really know what it's like for all of the really whole-hearted fans to see a movie the love die. I love Firefly and Serenity too, and I don't openly love much. I just want it to pull through.

Ok, so I bought the companion guide for Serenity and have been reading it cover to cover and my synopsis is this, nothing can compare to Serenity or Firefly in all of its greatness. For real people! You will never find a cast more tight knit than the cast of Firefly, these people are best friends. I can't get over it, and it totaly adds to their on screen performances knowing this! I also cannot get over how dedicated Joss is, for real. He has a lot of respect in me, he is on my list of the uber forces in the movie industry! Now, all of that asside, there really is not much I can say, its Thanksgiving here where I am and so I have been visiting and filling my belly with sweet sweet turkey meat. I got some money from some grandparents and went and bought myself some new clothes. A 128$ Boston Red Sox jersery amongst them, its wicked sweet. I have been very busy, two jobs, school, writing, drawing, and maintaining my Serenity RPG. I guess I should go into a little detail as to why I call it a Serenity RPG and not a Firefly RPG. I actually like explaining it to be honest. I call it Serenity because Firefly entails to the ship the crew flys, and yes I understand they call it Serenity as well. But Serenity was also a battle that actually near crippled the Indapendents and plays a big part in the world of Firefly we know today. So we needed a name people could familiarise themselves with best. Its sub name is Dark Skies, this is in no way meant to be threatening or gothic in some way. Its more so a face value deal. So, I start a new job tomorrow at Kraynak's...which is the local center of Christmas glee...aka where all the mommies and daddies bring their screaming kiddies to see Santa for the next three months. *sigh* Hey, at least I got a job again! Last nite I went out with an old friend, and wound up talking for three hours in two different restaurants and pissing the waiters off. :finger: ***hehehehe*** We left them a big tip, so it's all good now. I plan to watch "Ariel" tonight just before I sleep. I made sure to catch the entire DVD set before seeing Serenity, and now I am re-watching all the episodes in order. What a delight ... since I must be alone in my room at night, this is next best.

Well, it's Sunday night of the second weekend of SERENITY's release, and we got creamed. Tell you the truth, I wasn't really that surprised. You factor in the time of year it was released, the fact that genre flicks like this drop half their audience the second weekend around, the experimental marketing campaign in a time where even regular campaigns don't work and everything else, it was almost foolish to think that we'd have a $30 or $40 million dollar opening weekend. But I'm not sad by this. If anything I find it fitting. It actually made me think of the second to last scene in one of my favorite movies, THE COMMITMENTS. It's after when the band has basically self-destructed and Jimmy the Rabbit is walking home, dejected by the whole thing, and he has this one last confrontation with Joey "The Lips" Fagin. JOEY: Jimmy. You want a ride? JIMMY: Piss off. JOEY: Oh don't take it personally, Jimmy. They'll all come crawling back. JIMMY: They can crawl up their holes for all I care. JOEY: "Oh sing unto the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things." Psalm 98. JIMMY: You lied to me Joey. I always bought anything you told us, and I was probably the only one who ever did. But you lied to me. JOEY: I'm sorry you doubt me, brother Rabbitte. Look, I know you're hurtin' now, but in time you'll realize what you've achieved. JIMMY: I've achieved nothing. JOEY: You're missing the point. Success of the band was irrelevant. You raised their expectations of life. You lifted their horizons. Sure, we could've been famous and made albums and stuff, but that would have been predictable. This way, it's poetry. JIMMY: It's a pisser is what it is, Joey. And that's how I feel about the whole thing. Yes, after three years of blood, sweat and tears, we arn't the new STAR WARS or MATRIX or a $100 million dollar blockbuster. But to tell you the truth, it shouldn't matter. We managed to give Joss, Nathan, Gina, Alan, Adam, Morena, Jewel, Sean, Summer and Ron a chance to tie up loose ends and to give SERENITY one last flight. We raised expectations and hopes for everyone who knows or have heard about the show. We've shown the industry that a fan base can be loud enough to resurrect what was perceived as a dead property. If you think about it, we are a success story even without the money. And so what even if wern't a blockbuster. There have been countless movies that have had minor success in theatres but over the years have become institutes unto themselves. Once the DVD hits, then we'll really show how much of a hit we all know it is. FIREFLY/SERENITY is a legend as it is. And legends never die. P.S. And on a personal note, now that Jewel and Sean are not huge celebrities with million dollar pricetags, I can afford them for when I make my indie flicks.

But oh, so very goooooooooood. So, I went to the shops to buy some milk and bread and pick up the insulin no one in the world seems to have... anyway... I passed by one of those mid center "massage" places that give neck massages for, like, $5 and I thought 'why the hell not'? I mean, I've gotta go into hospital tomorrow and rearrange my whole life, so why not something special for me right now? So I sit down and he starts and, wow, my shoulders are real tense (like I didn't *know*?) and he starts away and convinces me to get the shoulders and neck massage for a little extra. One of those places which doesn't have a *degree* listed anywhere and you can tell by the stances these guys are holding that they have no idea about proper posture and are going to kill themselves if they continue like this much longer, and none of the moves this guy was making was even remotely familiar and I doubt on the approved Australian Massage Association list... But, oohhhhhhhh, it felt so good. And, yes, I know that when I get my fiance up on the massage table and work on the kinks in his body, I can always turn it around and get him to work on me... but sometimes, I mean, we all know it, sometimes you just need someone who [i]knows[/i] what they're doing. And, as I sat there watching this other guy work on a man lying on a massage table, I got the strangest urge to just start giving them tips. Like, for instance, get a table with *adjustable* heights so that this poor guy doesn't have to double himself over to reach the body on the table and... oh jesus... is he *actually* kneeling on one knee to bend down to reach the man's arms? If you balance yourself properly, then you wouldn't be reaching back to rub away the ache in your kidneys, 'cause there'd be none... and hey, where you have 'foot massage' listed, maybe it should be 'reflexology' and, you know, do you have anyone that does hand and auricular reflexology? I'm available you know... But I didn't actually say anything and just sat there and TOOK IT ALL as he pounded mercilessly at my stubborn, stubborn, fascia frozen flesh. Mmmmmmmmm. Don't tell my fiance, ok?

Im just loving being a browncoat right now. Its SO much fun. Theres so much cool merchandise for the film. Thats what rocks. With the series, the only thing we got (at first) was the box set. Thats the only thing weve had for a long while. But now theres loads! Sountracks! Action figures! Posters! Comics! Books! More books! Trading cards! Postcards! Badges! I love it! I've got the visual companion, novelization, magazine, and they rock. But I want a River action figure! Give us a River action figure! Unfortunately I won't get either the Serenity or Firefly soundtracks til christmas as Im saving money for the flan! Stay shiny!

I got to see my best friend for the first time in two years, and meet his one year old. I bought him The Firefly box set for his birthday, two days prior. Of the day's annoyances were two minor details, more phone calls than I generally like and my best friend's girlfriend's bestfriend's boyfriend, who was a well meaning fellow though somewhat bothersome... and having to type best friend's girlfriend's bestfriend's boyfriend. A small price to pay for this most excellent day. Low key and I got to make a very obscure Star Wars reference in the sentence before last. I've been gone for a while. I don't visit this board often. I'm usually at Whedonesque and Livejournal. I came back to edit my profile and update my blog. I've been having fun with the PDX Browncoats. Been to several shindigs and making a lot of friends. I went to the Kirkland Firefly screenings in September, and went to two advanced screenings in Portland. Then there was a press screening. I had missed Joss' birthday screening since it was also my brother's birthday and we went out for sushi instead. Got my brother into the press screening so he got to see it the first time in all it's finished glory. Serenity has renewed my passion for this 'verse. It added layers of depth to the Firefly mythology, which is something I'd been missing from a 13 episode series. I never thought I'd say this, being a die-hard Buffy fan that I am, but I believe if Firefly had continued it would have became Joss' biggest accomplishment in television. It would have surpassed Buffy and Angel in quality. I still love Buffy and Angel, but Firefly and Serenity seem to be more consistent and thematically fluid than the former. Everything gelled from the start, and the Firefly episodes were perfectly structured and produced to create the right amount of stand-alone and heavy-in-mythology stories and in just the proper order. There are no I Robot You Jane's or I Fall to Pieces' in this first season. And then came Serenity. And it turned everything upside down. This is the best sci-fi movie I've ever seen. It takes these stories and these characters and pushes them to the limit, it challenges our Heroes and shows you what this 'verse is truly made of. I have a new love affair with Firefly now. These characters have changed, and the entire 'verse is different now - because we now know things we didn't before, and because things happened that cannot be undone. I want to see how our Big Damn Heroes deal with the consequences. I want more stories to add even more layers so that I'm endlessly peeling back layers everytime I watch I want that more than Kaylee wants a strawberry. Remember the first rule of flying. :kiss:

In the box office, that is. I've viewed the BDM several times now, and have not only enjoyed the movie, but also the reactions of the different audiences. But for a Sci-Fi action film, SERENITY is lacking a couple of major components which the general , if not true SciFi geeks, audience has been programmed to expect. It has no aliens. It has no super cool 'space' weapons. Now, when it comes to aliens, Reavers are a poor stand in for what the American movie goers have come to expect. That's cause they're not aliens, for starters. They're not even DNA mutated freaks, such as in DOOM. ( Which, btw, how many folks have noticed the trailers for THAT being shown before the BDM. What was Universal THINKING?? The intro for the BDM of 'Earth that was' and the scene from DOOM couldn't be any more similar if they tried! WTF? ) Now, back to the blog.... Also missing for the Pavlov's fans that seem to throw all manner of $$ at movies only because ...*takes deeeep breath* . Also missing are really cool weapons. We have swords, nasty Reaver throwing stars, harpoons,missles, [i]futuristic[/i] bows, and guns. Lots of guns. No Light Sabers, Death Stars, lasers, .... Now, I'm not for a second suggesting that Joss included Aliens or such, but it's just a comment on how simplistic and brainwashed the general public has become when dealing w/ such things in space. I for one think those elements deserve to be left out, and praise Joss for sticking to his all too average guns.

I am a rock stone that does not feel heat or cold, the rush of wind, the fall of water. Yet there are sparkles that draw me out to drift on thoughts that yearn toward joy's pleasure. Sparkles that shine in the deep dark of the black but drown in the wash of powers beyond my control. To be an unfeeling stone, seeing all as one and to deny the sparkle as well as the black, to drift unmoved and alone. Not worth the loss of the sparkle to be an unmoved stone, safe at great cost, shinning sparkle spreading out lighting all that is not stone and ready to be.

Okay, well I wanted to post about this viewing because I had high hopes for it and boy did they pay off. It was my 8th time seeing Serenity. And I don't think I could ever get tired of it. I saw it at 2 previews before it came out. On Friday, opening night, I went twice in a row, to my local cineworld. There were about 20 people in there each time. :crap: But hey they all laughed and gasped in all the right places! I wasn't too bothered. Friday isn't a big night for cinema-goers here. Its Tuesday, actually. Tuesday is bargain day. Its when all movies are half price. Thats when they take their most money. So I was looking forward to Tuesday. Anyway I went again on Sunday, and there were a lot more people. More than I'd expect for a Sunday night. (I also saw it Saturday and Monday, but those were at different theatres, in different towns.) So, I went to see it tonight. I was hoping it would be packed. We had been #1 on the weekend, its the busiest night. And hopefully, word of mouth from some people who saw it over the weekend had spread. I got in there and it was packed! More packed than I'd ever seen the cinema! And they all laughed really hard, and a lot! And when they're laughing that much, and everyone else is laughing, you know you're having a damn good time. And the reaction to Wash's death...there was of course the gasps, and the silence, but I heard other things. The lady in front of me went "Oh, no!" and some guy behind me went "What?!" and some other girl was like "NO!". These people loved this film. And these were people of all ages. GO Serenity!

Hi! I just got back from seeing Serenity. I spoke to someone I assume is on this site cause they told me about it and about the series, on my way home I went to Best Buy and they had 1 copy of Firefly left and I am currently watching the series as I type this and I have to say I can see why everyone loved Wash, he's so sweet and funny! I was off today so I went to a movie and I had seen the previews of this one and thought it be cool to see and it was! I plan to see it again with a friend who also wants to see it on Friday! The hero is cornered, about to die when, BANG! The crew member who seems the most self-serving at times shoots the villain just in the nick of time. "Good shot." The hero compliments. "I was aiming for his head." The other replies. No, not [i]The Train Job[/i], but a Blake's 7 episode, [i]Orac[/i], written and broadcast in 1978. In this case, the titular hero, Roj Blake, is almost shot by Commander Travis, who has a blaster in his left arm (which he fairly blames Blake for), when Kerr Avon shoots Travis in said hand. When I saw this first over the summer, my reaction was, understandably "Huh." So, is this just a coincidence, or did Joss and Tim make an homage in [i]The Train Job[/i] to another cult sci-fi show?

So y'all here it is. The first of my five college essays. I've still got to par it down by four words but the truth is i've just knocked it down from 674 to 504 in 15 minutes. I'm so sick and tired of it i really don't know what does and doesn't make sense if you don't know me. I will get you a pony and a plastic rocket if you comment. “Shakespeare is a lot like sex.” I lifted my head from my cheddar whale induced stupor and looked at the guest lecturer. Dr. Paul Menzer had not only captured my attention; it seemed as though everyone in the room was exchanging significant glances, some of the bolder students commenting to each other with looks that would make any mother blush. I swallowed the remainder of my non-conformist goldfish at their jests and laid my head on my Complete Works of William Shakespeare and glanced around the room. It was easy to be impressed. In a room like that it’s hard to think that you’re something special. After three weeks of intensive Shakespeare work and communal everything, these people had showed me the best in myself. They all have unique personalities that shine whether you were reworking a scene or flouncing about the downtown area of Staunton, VA. More than anything they helped me challenge the code. In a sense, the stage directions that help a performance run smoothly. But now is the time to defy those directions and question just who wrote them. Next time your cue reads, “exit right” just as someone with a totally different perspective enters left; I challenge you to stay on for a beautiful exchange of world-views that could shape your own opinion. Share the spotlight on occasion and you will find the beauty of discovery and a new meaning for a well-rehearsed scene. The side in people I look to is always the one that convinces me that there is good in everyone. That shiny side that isn’t afraid to holler to the rice-cakes from four aisles down. Along with this big heart for love comes an appreciation and trust in those I admire. My parents both went to UVA and my hope since I learned to talk far from the rolling hills of Charlottesville Virginia was to graduate with a degree from this university. Whenever I discover a new facet about my personality like a love for theater or an attraction to education I find the greatest delight in learning of UVA’s ability to foster that development. Growing is what I do best. To me growing does not mean making excuses for your former knowledge, it means living with the hope that one day it will all fit together. The beauty in changing is that everything around you is changing too. You know, life should be more like Shakespeare camp. Living with an appreciation for each other’s gifts and an undying desire to bring out the best in people. Life. It’s a lot like Shakespeare. The first time you live it you’re always looking up the hard parts, apologizing, and afterwards you wonder, “So what was that all about?” My challenge is a simple one. Live a life that doesn’t make you wonder the point of it all, one that requires no apologies and takes joy in looking up the hard parts. After all, growing doesn’t mean you have to lose yourself, just explore the stage directions.

His zeal is on a par with Early, but it seems the Operative functions within something more like a self-created religious ethic, built of elements gleaned from military theory and Christianity. I have a theory, surprise, surprise. In the scene in the training house between the Operative, Inara and Mal, the Operative tells Mal he can't make him angry, and I think that's a sham. He presents himself as though he is as completely calm and in control of his emotions as he is of his physicality (as well as implying that he among all others is without sin). I saw him as very emotional and arrogant from his delivery of a couple of lines in his first scene: 1. the tone he uses when he asks the doctor 'do you know what your sin is?' seems very much like a disappointed and condesending parent to me, and 2. in his delivery of the last line in that sequence 'where are you hiding, little girl' the words 'little girl' fairly drip with venom. I think he's acting like a guy who's trying to be something he's not. Also take a look a his face when the guys on his ship tell him they are reading 7 signatures (from the 7 crybabies the crew launch as they leave orbit - and by the way, why wasn't it 8 signatures?) I don't think his rage and pride are ramping up throughout the film so much as they are being brought closer and closer to the surface until the moment when he shoots Mal in the back. That's the act of a complete coward, but it was pretty clear to me that he had totally lost any remaining shred of control over his emotions when the Reavers showed up and he yelled 'summary fire!' BTW, what do you think his sin was? I'm voting for Grumpy, I mean Pride.

Hey all, I just wanted to say how sorry I was for fretting over the fate of Serenity. It is a great movie, and even if it does flop, it will still remain in yours and my heart. I really feel like I have failed and betrayed Firefly, Mr. Whedon, and all my fellow browncoats. I hope that those of us who lost faith at the moment of truth will be forgiven. On a brighter note, Halloween is coming up and my school (Meridian Technical Charter High School [MTCHS]) is having a tech party for gamers and the like. Due to district and state policy, we cannot say "Halloween" because it interferes with seperation of church and state I guess. Oh well. Skiils USA (the club at my school which organizes tech parties) is still making it a spirit week type thingy, and the tech party will be part of that. So on the day of the tech party, it will be "dress up as your favorite character", or more blatantly put, "put on a costume". The thursday before the tech party is dress up as your favorite "Sci-Fi" character, so I'm gonna put on my Reynold pants and go as the captain! If I manage to get a hold of a digital camera I'll take some pictures, but overall, it is gonna be a blast! Hope all you could come to this, but limit is 150 people (it is a small school). If you have any ideas for me costume, please respond to this. I tried looking at the site for selling Firefly and Matrix garments (Abbyshot I think?), but they are darn expensive and I don't know if I could afford that. I thought of Burlington Coat Factory, but I don't know what type of coat Mal's is (the browncoats). I've been told that they are dusters or trenches, but I don't know. So a long time ago I set up a cafepress store and started making my own Firefly shirts. Not many people have purchased from it and that doesn't bother me a bit, but I bought one of my own shirts. It reads "My Other Car is a Firefly Class Transport" and has a silhouette of the ship on there. I just happened to be wearing it when the wife and I went to dinner at the Red Robin near Westgate Mall in San Jose last night. Hi! I've been reading a number of the Fan Fiction stories on here and have to say they are very good. I am sort of tempted to try it out myself and see how it goes. I noticed that some people do fics, they do it as a series. First question is: How do you come up with a name? I also noticed is many people here give the characters siblings or children. Second Question: If I wanted to give Simon and River another sister or brother I could? I'm not saying I am going to do, I am just wondering. I also bought the RPG book hoping it would help me out. I also noticed Most use the Chinese but I have seen on here and FF.net that some writers choose not to or use very little. Third Question: Do I have to use the chinese? I really enjoyed watching Firefly… and unlike most TV shows I used to watch, I really liked all the characters. But we all have our favorites. Wash being my favorite character and Simon being my least favorite. It’s like comparing nine light bulbs. Wash would be 100 watts. Simon would be 98 watts. Everyone else in between. Not much difference. But, even Book (who started below Simon but jumped up with the whole mystery of who he really his. Not to mention the “Special Hell” bit) had less airtime then Simon, and yet Simon remained 98 watts. Maybe, its because I saw him protecting River as being a little too obsessive. I liked that he sacrificed everything he had to save her, don’t get me wrong. And she needed special attention at the time. But, all we mostly saw Simon do, is deal with River, and maybe occasionally do other stuff, and I guess subconsciously I started thinking that Simon is only good for taking care of River, and fixing the occasional wound. The Firefly episode Ariel surprised me a bit. And it wasn’t until after I watched the movie Serenity that I started to take a deeper look into his character. The book highlighted even more things. If you get the opportunity to, and only after you see the movie, read the movie novelization. It’s based on the first version of the finalized script. As with almost any movie, what’s written and what gets shot is sometimes different. The same holds true for this book. In my opinion, books based on movies are usually weaker then the movie (the opposite being movies based on books usually plain suck.) But if you’ve seen the movie, there is a lot of back-story the book includes. How Simon set up rescuing River was very useful info. In the end, I enjoyed the book far more then any other based-on-movie book I’ve read. Just the different “Point-of-Views” made it way more dynamic. The Firefly back-stories and the movie really blend well in this book. Hats off to Keith R.A. DeCandido. I think he did a fine job on the book. I’ve also enjoyed many of his other books. Either way… back to the point. On a thread in the Sluggy Freelance fan board, some people felt the movie prologue was different from what Simon said, about River’s rescue in the pilot episode. They said he paid people to rescue River. The movie shows Simon doing most of the rescue. There was also a point made about Simon’s character during River’s rescue and how it was really… out of character for him. Reading the books and watching the show provided some clues as to how both versions are true. First off, once he rescued River, he can’t just walk down the sidewalk with her. (Zoe mentions that central planets are full of feds and sensors in one episode of Firefly.) The people Simon paid a “huge” amount of money to, already had the contacts in the academy. They’d gotten a hold of an Alliance military uniform and credentials. Very good credentials too, for him to get that deep into the academy. The stun weapon hidden inside the baton I’m sure cost a pretty penny. They’re the ones who rescue him and River from the ventilation shaft with the flying vehicle. And in that vehicle, contains a portable cryo-unit (also expensive) that he puts River in so he can move around safely. I’m sure that cryo unit was disguised to look like something else as well. I imagine most people would get questioned dragging a giant freezer around. The flying vehicle that his contacts rescue him in, drops him and the frozen River off at the Eavesdown (sp?) Docks. This is where the Firefly pilot episode Serenity begins. Also to note… When Simon was telling the story of River’s rescue to Mal and the crew in the Firefly Pilot episode (Serenity) he didn’t know who he was dealing with. A fed had just shot Kaylee because of him. River was let out of cryo early, and the feds we’re now aware they onboard the ship. Simon probably felt it was safer to under state his part in River’s rescue. After all, the crew knew they we’re after Simon for some reason “probably” dealing with his moon-brained sister.

By a Sci-fi show? Yes. and why? Because, I still maintain that simple belief in heroes & doing the impossible. The heroes are not the ones who sit around "waiting" for the distressed. The true heroes are they who have the distress thrown upon them and still march toward a sunset, knowing that when the darkness finally passes the sun will rise. Do not mistake my meaning, I want to see the story move on, there are adventures and moments that must be told. But sequels & action figures be damned. This story, and these characters have become a part of us, a part of my being. Beyond my fanboy good looks, and our "hip" "cultish" status, there is something deeper. It's love & it is a frightening thing...to those who don't posess it or can't posess it. To a jaded world who have lost the sense of something greater, something worth putting yourself on the line for. This is what we have found. It's what we truly carry, It's what never fades into fad, and is never consumed when consumers find a new flavor. This won't pass away, it is timeless, it is a part of who I am. When reality cuts me, my blood bleeds brown & independant. Yeah, I Got it. And the plastic dinosaur on my desktop just smiles.

When I first showed up on this board last month, to fill in a host of words about my experience with Serenity, the lag was an impossible field to penetrate. I wonder now if that was a good or bad thing. I feel like there's so much to say. I feel like there's so much *I* want to say. But as is, i'm going to leave you with this until i have more time to surrender. For all my fellow fans out there, for those that have read my little corner of this board and those that never noticed until now: Serenity is the greatest movie i ever that i didn't like. I just don't get it. It makes me very angry and a little confused. Let me see if I can explain. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this looks set to be a rant. I decided that I couldn't bear only going to see Serenity only once at the cinema so I headed off today to Bluewater to watch it for a second time. All very exciting. I'm humming to myself and generally feeling very happy. I head on downstairs to say 'see ya later' to my two housemates. "Why are you dressed like that to go to the cinema?" one says. "Are you going by yourself?" says the other. "You're driving for an hour to see a film you've already seen before?" They both say. "You're crazy!" Point number one, no, I'm not actually crazy, slightly hyperactive occasionally yes, but definatly not crazy. Point number two, where is the problem in driving a ways to see something you enjoy? It's not like I'm some unhappy loner who has no friends, it just so happens that everyone was either busy or completely uninterested. It is frustrating to know that not all of my friends are supportive of the love I have for this show. Most of the time thats Ok but today it got to me. I found myself sitting in the cinema quietly hoping that no annoying teenagers would talk through the bits they found boring, but alas, talk they did. Grrr! Anyway I'm over the ranting, life goes on. Serenity, so much better the second time round and like home the third time. So much to see and notice and pay attention to, all the little things. I'm sure I caught a glimpse of Blue Sun in there as well as Whitefall and a catalyzer. Finally, i thought I would leave you with my 'Top 5 Things I've Learned from Serenity'. Saw Serenity for the fourth time today. I was very impressed, my friends kinda wanted to see it, but hemmed and hawed about it, because they hadn't seen the series yet and didn't want to be confused. I begged and pleaded and eventually convinced them with the tried and true "If you see it, I'll pay for your ticket". They agreed, but then wouldn't let me pay. Anyways, what I noticed that I hadn't before was this... and it was very cool, because it answered one of those little things that had been niggling at me since the first time I saw the movie and everyone else probably saw it first off, but I hadn't, not the first three times, anyway. In the very last scene, where Mal returns to the group, *everyone* has been injured by the fight. Zoe was slashed, Jayne shot, Simon shot, Kaylee got darts in the neck, River was pulled back into the Room'O'Reavers... everyone but Inara, yet she was sitting there with this big ol' patch of blood on her face. I had just figured she'd scratched it in the tussle. And it *did* bother me, because, hey, why everyone but Inara? What did it mean? But no... There was actually a few seconds, it was very quick, where you see a reaver LEAP onto Inara and force her to the ground, then BITE HER FACE. Simon pulls it off her at the last second and then helps her into the room. I so totally missed that in the first three viewings. I wonder, does it make me somewhat disturbed and sick to be relieved that Inara got hurt? I mean, it's not like I wanted her to be hurt, because I was so totally upset in that first scene she had with the Operative where he punched her and threw her up against the wall ("What? oh no he *didn't*! You don't HURT INARA!"), but... I don't know, it kinda bugged me that she was the only unscathed one in the fight... now it doesn't bug me anymore. that's all, that's the entire point of this blog

So I am busy doing algebra, listening to music from my Window's Media Player library. Rufus Wainwright fades away, and then....I hear River Tams voice. I poke on over to my computer and sure enough, the River Tam sessions are playing. Creeeepy...I never downloaded these, were they designed as a virus? Is this what they were meant to do, because that's kinda cool if the R.T. sessions finally wormed there way to me all on their own. Anyone else had this happen?

In the name of all thats sacred. Today just sucked like you would not believe. My little brother went to a place out of town the previous night, I did not know he was going to be home any time soon today. He comes to help myself and my other brothers on the construction site every now and then. What he neglected to tell me is that he went to the job site without me and in the process I missed the chance to make some money! This is not his job, its mine. And when I am not able to get a ride there, its no biggy. But when he goes to the site and does not tell me about it, its only natural that I be pissed. He can't seem to see what he did wrong and can't understand why I am so pissed off about it. I was three seconds from bitch slapping the sound out of his name! Now, about a week a go, I rescued a small cat. She was almost run over by a truck, so I nabbed her, fed her and tried to figure out what to do. Despite my several urgings, my familly would not call the SPCA to get the info and instead we let it back outside. So for the next few days (and unknown to me until that night, several days prior) this cat would sit outside of my window and meow non stop like all night. So this weekend I am at my mothers house because its close to downtown and I needed to work. I come home to find out they found out who the cat belongs to and that the previous owner could not take care of it and told us we could have it. So sweet, I got a cat right? Well we are looking for a name, and I figured that since I found it I could get a little more clout on the issue. I came up with several names, ones that everyone seemed to like. My older sister, keeps the cat in her room, along with the food dish. She comes home today and tells me the cats name is Sonya now, despite my wanting to call it River. Her reasons? She feeds it, she names it. I have never been so angry! Its like the cat was taken away from me! Its my damn cat! We would not even have it if it wasn''t for me! And the best part about it is that I have no one willing to go to bat for me on the issue! So in short, I lost a tone of money today and a cat. I am pissed, really pissed. yes. i did nursery at church today. the children were frightened. i was too. there were plastic dinosaurs involved. i ended up doing the entire first scene with them and amusing small children. it was glorious. i have really long hair. children about the age of three enjoy this trait. one of them asked why my hair was so "naughty/knotty" and i had to explain that Jesus just made some people's hair curly. the three year old went on to list all the other things Jesus knew including (but by no means limited to-) *when mommy kangaroos die *when service gets out *what you're doing ALL THE TIME and it dawned on me that Jesus knew [spoiler] that wash was destined to die. Anyways, AJ and I were watching Evil Dead ('cause we're up to "E", it's gonna be 2010 before we even get to the second half of the DVD collection). Really, it doesn't stand the test of time methinks. It's very bad. Anyways, so there's this female character and she hears a noise in the pitch black of night and so decides the best thing to do is go running out to the woods, ALONE, to investigate in her nightclothes. Okay then. Then she gets attacked and raped by a tree. Yes, a tree. Me: What, is she just gonna go back to her friends and tell them she was raped by a tree? I wanna see the police report on this. AJ: Watch the movie. Me: 'Excuse me, I'd like to report a rape.' 'Can you describe your attacker?' 'Well... kinda leafy and green...' AJ: Would you watch the movie? Me: I mean, would you even report that? Seriously, the police would ask all sorts of questions and then they'd wanna see if they could get a SAP sample... AJ: *snerk* I mean - WATCH THE MOVIE. I am a horrible person. There was a contest through an online magazine where you had to write, in 50 words or less, a scene where Jason Voorhees stabs some Hollywood celebrity. You could pick anyone you wanted. I decided to emulate Joss' writing style by stabbing him and Allyson Hannigan. The scene was meant to be complimentary, because I imagined him the tragic victim of haters. But when I trimmed it down to 49 words, I had to cut out most of the substance, and that just left Jason stabbing two people in what I now realize reads as an angry reaction to Firefly's existence. I got an email back from the guy handling the contest. He said, "On a personal note, having seen Serenity, I totally agree with you." Why, oh why didn't I stab Fox executives instead? I feel crappy. I'm sorry, everybody.

If SciFi can budget a show like Battlestar with all the special effects,then why not a FIREFLY with less effects and more drama.My interest in FIREFLY has always been about the characters and the actors that play them.The storylines of each one and the combined big picture of where it would lead to in several years. I wanted to learn about Book's past slowly over time.It's great how all the characters seem to fit together even though they are completely different.I can do without some big space battle every week that cost big bucks and takes camera time from our BDHs.Don't get me wrong, I love to see Serenity in flight and landing on some moon to ditch the FEDS,but I can't see Firefly's effects costing more than those of other shows.If the effects have to be cut then cut them, but GIVE US BACK OUR SHOW!!

Just got introduced to the world of Firefly on October 6th. Completely Addicted now. Bought the DVD's, saw the movie, bought the role playing game, have 2 of the 3 comics and ordered the third (which is of course the first in the series so I can't read it yet), orderd the soundtracks for both Serenity and Firefly.. The mother-in-law and brother-in-law came over for dinner last night, and, to forego any talk and such, we put on Firefly's pilot episode (Serenity) for them... The mother-in-law watches a lot of sci-fi, but is also kinda hung up on all that religosity and such... she fell asleep, which might'a been a result of bein' tired, or mayhaps a defence mechanism for escapin' havin' to comment on all the whorin' talk, and killin' and such... The brother-in-law seemed to get a kick out of it, though he was looking at a copy of Heros Unlimited through most of it, though it did catch his attention, so work will continue on getting him hooked. I also loaned a copy of Firefly to a friend at work, who I think will enjoy it... So, spreading the 'verse to friends and family as fast as I can! Plus, I had the added bonus of gettin' to watch the pilot again, and pick up things I missed, or didn't know to take note of, the first time through! Shiny!

We agreed that I'd go to a stupid anime convention if she saw Serenity. Now that can't happen! I have to work tonight so I can't even go see it one more time....my day has just been ruined. Really, I'm about to cry. And she's not going to see why I'm upset...doesn't understand why supporting Serenity is so important to me. *sigh* I think I need chocolate now.

Two weeks and one day into being a Firefly fan, and I'm now at the end of my rope. The DVD set is over, the movie's gone (from my city anyway), and I'm still painfully obsessed with the show. At least I'm not alone. Almost everyone I see around here seems to be a tortured new fan like me. It's wonderful and cathartic to talk to everyone here about it... but I've still got this show screaming through my veins and just can't get it out. I think the only way I'm going to get any peace from it is to deface it with a fanfic and express what's haunting me. The story that needs to be told is already taking shape in my head, unfortunately. What I used to do when writing a fic was just put the characters in the scene and let [b]them[/b] tell it, with me just sort of pointing them in the right direction. But this Verse is so intricate with the Chinese and the unusual slang, I don't know that I can trust myself to do that with a Firefly fic. Not once so far have I casually thrown out the word "shiny" in a post. And not only am I still finding my footing on that level, I haven't written a fic of [b]any[/b] kind in almost five years. :crap: This could get ugly. I don't really feel like I have a choice, though. I've gotta do it. Sorry. I finally got a chance to listen to [u]Firefly Talk #1[/u] podcast. Enjoyed the show. I particularly enjoyed the article [i]“In Defense of Whedon’s Zoe; A Warrior Woman in Battle”[/i] about Zoe’s (lack of) emotion to her husband’s death. A lot of points and background information on her character we’re made in that article. The article was making a defense about how Zoe reacted to the death of Wash seemed inadequate. We didn’t see the ‘traditional woman’ fall apart in tears and become despondent. I can’t really imagine Zoe doing that. This is one of the few moments in the movie, where background information about Zoe was not only helpful but also necessary to fully understand her reaction. Watching Firefly, I always saw Zoe as a woman who deeply controlled her emotions. The article on [u]Firefly Talk #1[/u] points out that people who go career military must have or learn to control their emotions. Zoe was career military. She would have to have learned keeping her emotions in check and herself in focus. Being that she was an Independent, I’m going to assume she did not live in a central planet. In the show Firefly, and even a little in the movie, it is shown that “survival of the fittest” is what determines your life span in the outer planets. And for Zoe being a woman, didn’t make it any easier. We’d like to think that equality has gotten better in 500 years, but the episode [i]“Heart of Gold”[/i] showed us that plainly, that’s not true. Women and men, who survived in the outer planets, survived because they did what they had to. Zoe simply turned it into an art. I’m not going to repeat a bunch of what the article said (i might a little, sorry). I invite you to listen to the podcast, though. That article, along with the rest of the show was very interesting and format was excellent. The people working on that podcast did a superb job. I’m just point out things I've said in the past concerning Zoe. During her time on Serenity, I’m thinking that Zoe probably mellowed out… a little bit. She is seen having a sense of humor. Laughing, listening to and telling jokes and stories. She had a blast calling the entire crew to the cargo bay after discovering Mal had accidentally gotten married. In the episode [i]“The Message”[/i] Tracy shocked when he found out Zoe got married, even making a comment about how “next you’ll tell me she has emotion and smiles.” But training and experiences don’t just disappear or are forgotten. The hard emotional shell goes active and strong when needed. Zoe doesn’t even flinch when Niska gives her Mal’s ear in [i]“War Stories.”[/i] After getting shot in the [u]Firefly[/u] pilot [i]“Serenity”[/i] Zoe almost immediately looks up and shoots without running for cover. She doesn’t hesitate to push Kaylee out of the path of the fireball in [i]“Out of Gas,”[/i] which results in her getting badly hurt. She also doesn’t loose her cool when Tracy points a gun at Wash [i]“The Message.” [/i] Her husband’s death profoundly hurt her. The emotions are stored deep in her. She switched to military mode very quickly because of Mal (probably the only other person she care about, but never romantically). She lost herself in rage while repelling the Reavers. And I’m sure, while she is alone she grieves for him, but she will never do it in the open. I’ve always seen her as a very strong woman. Sure of herself, but not arrogant or overconfident to a flaw. One of the most capable members of the crew of Serenity. She reminds me a lot of the captain in the movie [u]“Master and Commander – Far Side of the World.”[/u] An officer should be emotionally detached from the crew. Its impossible to do that on a ship as small as Serenity, and with such a small crew, but if Zoe ever had to vent, it was out of sight, in her room, probably with Wash. Even Wash would only argue about decisions with her and only when they we’re alone. Mal and Zoe couldn’t be completely detached from the crew, but Zoe did a better job of keeping her emotions in check then Mal. Having seen [u

I'm sure going to try. Wish I had someone to go with. Don't think I can talk a daugher into going with me again.... and my Mom is leaving for her Cali trip. So... I'm on my own. But I am so happy it has a chance to pick up somemore watchers and some more moolah.

A Serenity ship with sound effects and lights,and talking dolls that say "I'll be in my bunk." [That would be cool!] Where are they? Replicas of Mal's brown coat,[which he got on sale] T-shirts that say "We're Humped" or "Shiny". Where are they? Marketing is more effective than us tellin folks about Serenity/Firefly. There shoulda been more merchandise from the series before the movie came out. I'm speaking of course to the good folk at Universal. More, or any marketing would have made a difference in the income of Serenity. I ask again "Where are they?!"

We've seen it. We waited months and it came. It caused some strife for a moment, with schedules and money problems. But in the end, classes skipped, jobs called into, and pockets picked empty, we were all there, dressed for the part. We were ready. -History- I found myself in anticipation of something Joss didn't want to give me. I'm tired of Anakin falling to the Dark Side. I'm tired of Trinity dying just moments before Neo follows. I'm tired of the ambiguous endings. I'm tired of dead heroes. I've been sloughing through this trendy artform since the last episode of Cowboy Bebop. And yes, i'll admit that was one of the greatest shows i've ever formed an opinion for. And no, i'm not a fan of cesorship. And no, i don't think the world is less than atrocious. But i'm tired of the storybook temples built to the suffering protagonist. That's what was on my mind when i went into a dim theater with hopes of seeing Wash crack me up, Jayne act stupid in ways that allowed Wash to crack me up, and Captain Mal do the right thing, even when he had no reason to believe it was ever going to pay off. I went in expecting Serenity Pt. 3 and 4. What I got was a darkened look at a world I've been wanting to love. Now it seems like another jot on the notepad for Hollywood. "But in real life, mr. Sharp, the goodguys don't always win." I know. Believe me. I get it. So stop singing it. -Hubris- This is simple. I'm a purist, an Idealist, and a Dreamer. It's a rough combo in this day and age. Sure, we've known Anakin was Darth almost as long as we've know Frodo wouldn't be able to stay in the Shire. But those moments were back of our head as we watched the Death Star blow up. As we watched Smaug fall into the Lake. Somewhere out there, some guy wrote the ballad of Beowulf. Somebody started it. And we've been segregating our opinions ever since. We've been slowly dividing into the Hopeful Happy Endings and the Realistic Adult Dramas. And here's what's worse: We're usually the opposite in life. I will readily admit, when I go into the maelstrom of suffering that this life throws at me, i'm not squeezing the Lemonade. I'm shoving the lemons down the throats of any bloke willing to test me. I end up a jerk, by circumstance, and i hide behind the decisions I make with the thoughts that I had no choice. I guess what i'm saying is that in my own life, as pithy as it really is, i'm just like Mal. I shove the guy off the Mule and spare him one round to the chest in hopes of paying him my only bit of kindness from a parched heart. The Heart feeds on hope. And I didn't see Hope in Serenity. I saw a crew of hopless and stubborn souls that did out of a lack of choice. -Humility- Maybe I'm reading into this too much. Maybe i'm just not down with the trend for reasons more predictable than I'd like. As i wrot in the last entry: Serenity is the Best movie i've ever not liked. What I mean is simple: I have no argument about the writing. It's by far some of the best storytelling and movie-making I've seen in my life. It's a great film. It's just not what I wanted. Because I wanted a victory without the counter-weight of loss. I wanted to see something that might inspire me to stirve for the goal, instead of gritting my teeth and moving the only direction left...Forward. I expected a lot out of this movie. I wanted something that left me as happy as i did when Transporter 2 rolled it's credits, only without making me feel like a moron for watching it. I wanted something Joss didn't want to give me. I wanted Captain Mal to save Inara like a princess in a faery story. I wanted to see Jayne decide to leave the money for the crew. I wanted to see Book take down the Operative because he used to be an agent, too, only he lived, and that makes him better because he's a survivor... I wanted every last candy coated, re-hashed and predictable hollywood moment. Because I knew Joss could give it to me in a way that would merit my praise. And even if the critics damned

LIMINALOSITY

One of my best friends told me a few years ago when I was going through a really rough patch, that she had a trick to lift her spirits. She tries to think of ten good things that have happened that day. She told me they can be little tiny things if that's all you can find to be glad about, but find ten good things. So, of course I tried it because, why not. Paying attention to the world around you and making an effort to notice the good stuff on any level couldn't hurt, and I figured it might help lift me out of my (then) current misery. One day when I had started to turn it around, and life didn't look so bare, the highlight was seeing sparrows taking a dust bath, and it pierced my heart with the simple joy of their little flutteriness. This tiny little perfect moment is permanently tattoed on my heart. I still use this technique of ten good things whenever I remember it, because I figure you can keep lifting your spirits till everything around you is so perfectly beautiful you turn yourself into an angel. And who wouldn't want to be an angel, there might even be new colors, and there's flying too. A lot of what brings me great joy in little doses is making an effort to notice the natural world and be a part of it every day. Mare's tail clouds against a deep blue October afternoon sky is another little memory snapshot that I hold in the happiest part of my heart. Interactions with people, especially chance interactions with strangers, are also a regular addition to my list of ten things. I find that when I raise the level of attention and good will in my interactions with strangers, it raises the level of those qualities in my interactions with the people who play a larger role in my life. And, for the past couple years, one of the ten things at least once a week or so has been some little Joss related moment. The friend who told me to look for ten good things wants to know why I like Joss' work so much that I'd make an effort to get together with people to watch Buffy, Angel and Firefly. Seven seasons is just too much for her to contemplate, and she's not a big SF fan. I know, I know, I like FF best too. It's not just SF, but people have these preconceived notions. So I'm recording a couple of video tapes of some of my favorite Buffy eps. I hope she enjoys them, but I'm also having way lots of fun recording the eps on Fox, and trying to make a Buffy-sketch that might make some sense of the whole thing. Enough to maybe get her interested, not enough to intimidate or overwhelm. Enough to get her to watch some FF when I bring it at Christmastime. One of my favorite little arcs in Buffy is Bad Willow, so I've recorded "Lover's Walk", and "The Wish". The other day I walked out to a cafe to take a work break. There's a big scary parking lot where I work (I call these walks across the parking lot 'Laura Croft and the Parking Lot of Certain Death' to remind myself to pay attention, because the drivers sure aren't). There's a shiny blue cherry picker that's been parked in the lot for several weeks that I'd really like to borrow to take pictures of things at robin level. So, because I believe that wishing works, I'm making up a story about how I ask to borrow the cherry picker, and the guy at Fred Meyer says yes. Then I realize the episode that the VCR would have recorded that morning was, "Doppelgangland". So, I'm happy to remember this gift I'm making for my friend, and remembering some of the lines from that ep "Oh, I'm all fuzzy" and "I'm a blood sucking fiend! Look at my outfit!". Just as I get to where the cherry picker is parked, I notice there's a fresh banana peel on the ground in front of me and I laugh out loud. Like a little gift from the essense of Willow, a line from the ep my VCR recorded that morning. "I'm eating this banana. Lunchtime be damned!" Magic weirdness. Censorship on cable is an interestingly applied concept. I have noticed that the Rating Codes have been expanded to cover not only actual proscribed imagery & language but also implied imagery, language & even subject matter. For example - because even if Homer Simpson only discuses his unfettered love of Duff beer The Simpsons will get a Drug (D) Rating. And don't even get me started on language, Mr Carlin. Anyway, did anybody notice that when The SciFi Channel aired the Firefly episode "Trash" the censors made some interesting distinctions concerning the presentation of the nude human body. Current thinking apparently is that a full right angle profile of Mal's naked ass is not offensive but any indication of the separation of his two buttocks needs to be shielded from public display. I know that I sleep much better knowing that I am protected from such obscenities.

Even if you're flying faster than it can turn, the world does not stop turning. I'm currently in a dingy internet cafe in Sydney and even though I'm no longer there, all the other bits of my life keep turning. The curious thing is that thanks to said dingy internet cafes, I can keep track of it, watch the international gross mount up and generally keep my finger on the pulse. I should point out that there is finally some sunshine here so I'm going off to enjoy that and then I have a whole week in the middle of nowhere effectively so I won't be able to keep tabs on anything. That'll be interesting too. Mmm. There really ought to be some meat to this blog. Okay, I'll ramble about Sydney for a bit. How best to explain it? I can give you an example from last night. I'm walking with a group of five or so people, including my brother, and we come to a road crossing. Even though the pedestrian light is red, my brother crosses anyway. A taxi turns from the junction and Rob is now directly in his path. What happens next: 1) My brother becomes road kill. 2) The taxi driver revs, honks and screams at my brother who has to jump out of the way. 3) The taxi driver stops, waves at my brother and gestures at the rest of us to cross over too. Pretty much any other city in the world, it would be 1) or 2) but in Sydney, on we were waved. Most peculiar. It's not all courtesy and bon homie, though. I keenly feel the lack of hunger for reading material (bookshops are moderately sparse and there are a fraction of the number of magazines that most other countries have). There's also a slight mean spiritedness to some things here, a casual racism against the English (for example, the British backpacker whose boyfriend was allegedly murdered by someone on trial at the moment has been continuously castigated in the press, even to the point of constant hints that she may have been complicit) and a sense that priorities may not be quite right (most newspapers consist of 50% sports, 30% ads, 10% commentary and the remaining 10% is only occasionally actual news.) I couldn't live here but it is nice to visit.

I am really frustrated right now(like many of you Im sure)about Serenity's theater intake and I know its one more weekend away from gettin pulled from theaters. I know whats happening though and its the same thing that happened to the show...its not getting enough time. Its only been out like twenty days or something and that just isnt enough time. I guess all I can hope for now is that it gets at least 40 mil in the theaters but Im sceptical that thats even gonna happen. If any of you can give some hope it would be really appreaciated.

Hello Firefly community! I have come late to the party, not even seeing a full episode until after Serenity came out on September 30th. But I've tried to make up for my lapse with an abundance of enthusiasm at this point. Ever since I saw Serenity I've been asking myself, how did Fox mess up so bad with this show? I ask because I am a lifelong sci-fi fan and a worshipper of Whedon. How did they manage to miss me? The timing of Firefly wasn't good for me (busy year, very busy year) but I remember that it barely made my radar. Now there is no power in the 'verse that will keep me from making sure that we get more Firefly.

Well, I am going to see Serenity again today, bringing along a blind date/non-fan. I was watching Firefly again last night, and something occurred to me, just looking at Book throughout the episodes... I think it possible that Book may have been an Operative in his prior life. It would fit his proficiency in fighting (the pilot), his knowledge of weaponry (War Stories), his quote in Objects in Space, and the fact that the bounty hunter knew Book wasn't a shepard, also in OiS. I think we all kinda figured he was an Alliance type, but I think this particular occupation makes sense more than his being a judge, as some have suggested. It is more likely that a bounty hunter would recognize an Operative (who is sort of like a bounty hunter) than a judge. Oh, and a judge, while deserving respect, probably wouldnt command as much alacrity or urgency as a retired Operative would when injured, in Safe. Sorry if someone mentioned this already, I havent been actively monitoring the posts here. I hope to write more thoughts about the movie tonight!

Heee. I am endlessly amused by porn. The newest one my fiance (now manager of a porn store) bought home is a three disc special edition called "Pirates", which is so completely obviously a take off of "Pirates of the Carribean" it's not funny. Well, okay, maybe it's kinda funny. I mean, on the box (it has it's own box, fer cryin' out loud) there are pictures of sword fighting skeletons on it (right next to the nekkid, nekkid ladies). Even the cover art is designed to look like Pirates of the Carribean, (just with nekkidness). What amuses me the most, really, is that the 3 disc special box comes with it's own special features... including (but not limited to)... * Visual FX, the making of. * Audio Commentary with the Stars. * Behind The Scenes. * Pirates Short. * Bloopers. * Casting Video. * Bios. Ok, so, last time I posted I was devasted becasue Serenity left the theater near me. But, happy news, it moved to the theater across the street from my house! I got off the city bus outside the theater with my best friend and shrieked when I saw Serenity on the sign in big, bold, beautiful letters. Then I danced on the side of one of the busiest roads in the area. My friend tried to hide. The whole walk home I was smiling and giggling and dancing. Erin wasn't too pleased. We went to the 9:30 showing that evening. I was thrilled when I walked into a not-empty theater. I started to sing the Ballad of Serenity, but Erin hit me and threatened to leave. There were no previews, oddly, but I decided that was because Serenity is above such things. [u]Erin[/u] laughed a bit during the movie, gasped when Book died, and cheered the crew on when they brought the Reavers to the Alliance. And then Wash died. "OH MY GOD!" Not from me...from Erin! I knew she was hooked. After the movie while we walked back to the car, I asked her what she thought of the movie. She muttered that it was really good and threatened me with bodily harm if I rubbed it in. I didn't...much. Just laughed some more. And danced. :biggrin:

If you're a fan of Bill Cosby you got that blog title. For those who missed it, let me sum up. On one of his comedy albums, "I Started Out As A Child" I think, Cosby talked about the old Lone Ranger radio shows and how Tonto would ALWAYS go to town and he would ALWAYS get beat up. It got to the point that Cosby found himself yelling at the radio, "Tonto! Don't go to town!" Now whenever I see a character who has to get injured to prove that the situation is serious I always think of Tonto. Although Harry Kim (on Voyager) was the absurd but logical conclusion of that approach - it seemed like he died every other show to prove that the situation was serious - I find that my favorite Tonto of all (other than Tonto) is Simon Tam. I mean, everyone on Serenity gets the crud beaten out of them from time to time. But Simon has more of the Tonto thing going on somehow. I had noticed it pretty early into my Serenity/Firefly obsession so you can imagine what I did the first time I saw "Safe." Yep, yelled at the tv, "Simon! Don't go to town!" Now all I want is for Simon to be able to go to town again. Certainly he'll take a few on the chin so that we can have Serenity back on the big or little screen. Heck, I'd take a radio show. Would the actors like to get together for some podcasting fun? I'm sure it would sell pretty well on iTunes. I bet Fox and Universal don't own the rights for that. Although I'll look pretty funny going down the street with an iPod yelling, "Simon! Don't go to town!!"

Another thing about my viewing of Serenity on Friday... I bought 3 tickets to see Serenity (my friends are going to repay me...eventually...) and the man selling the tickets handed me 3 tickets to Domino. When I protested that I asked for [u]Serenity[/u] tickets he told me that I could just go into that theater. So I shuffled over to the snack bar as I asked my friends if my money was now going towards Domino. They ignored me. I asked the people at the snack bar, two high school girls who looked extremely bored. It took forever for them to understand what I was asking. Finally, one of them switched the tickets. My friends were highly embarrassed throughout this whole ordeal and Erin threatened to use her ticket to go see Domino. I really don't know if changing the tickets made a difference...but I now have another Serenity ticket stub! :biggrin:

So everyone's been whining about Serenity failing and how Universal is scaling back the release and how we've failed as Browncoats. To all of you whining about that...allow me to hold up three fingers and ask you to read between the lines! I went to a Sunday afternoon showing with my wife and two friends in San Jose, CA yesterday and we totally expected to see maybe ten other people in the theatre. Imagine our surprise when there's about 50 other people in the theatre!! And many of them were first timers based on them gasping in all the right places. So is Serenity sinking? Hell no! Do we still have to hold the line? You betcha! But we will make that eighty million, just you watch!

So I recently bought the Visual Companion and now and then I'll pick it up and look at the shooting script to see what was changed and/or taken out of what was released in theaters. Well I came across something that really took me by surprise today and that was when Mal is tellin the crew of Serenity to turn the ship into a Reaver ship and then he threatens their lives. In the movie he says something along the lines of...SO I HEAR A WORD OUT OF YOU THAT ISNT HELPIN ME OUT OR TAKIN YOUR LEAVE I WILL SHOOT YOU DOWN...and in the Visual companion he phrases a litle differently...SO I HEAR A WORD OUT OF YOU THAT ISNT HELPIN ME OUT OR TAKIN YOUR LEAVE I WILL FUCKING SHOOT YOU. Notice the difference. I am surprised at that because Im not used to that kind of language inside the Firefly/Serenity universe. But I was wondering if anybody would actually prefer it that way. I mean it does put a little more intensity to the whole scene(I think) but I was just curious.

So I live with a girl Anne, we share a house, split bills, yadda yadda. I'm 18, she's 24ish. Y'know... until now I've liked Anne, but I've just realised that she can be a selfish little bitch. So before we got the house I told her EXACTLY how far it was from uni, exactly how much we need to pay, even down to bill estimates, blah blah. Now she's suddenly decided that she can't afford it. Now, this is the girl who's got an $18,000 loan to live off (yeah, that's SO Much smaller than my £4,125 loan), has a job, and has family in the area. But no, she can't afford it. Never mind that I've paid all the gas so far and I'm paying the internet - SHE can't afford it. So because she can't afford it, she's decided we have to move out. Not only do we have to move out, but she has to find somewhere this week so that we can move out on FUCKING SUNDAY. Of course, the housing people can't TOUCH her, they can't do anything about what she does since she'll go back to the USA in June. Me? I'm a British citizen. I signed a tenancy agreement until June/July. I also signed something saying that if I don't pay, my mother will be responsible. And they have all of my cheques dated up until June, which they can cash on the first of each month. So if I pull out, I'll be blacklisted for sure (won't get a house anywhere else), they'll probably try to cash my cheques, and won't give me my £300 security deposit back. But here's the real killer. By moving we'd be saving £75 a month. So she wants to risk me and my mum getting blacklisted and sued so that she can save petty cash. She has to earn more than that in a WEEK! I could cancel the cheques and just not get the deposit, back, but I'm contracted to the internet until next summer, which means I'm going to be blacklisted with AOL as well if we move (since the new house will have internet). £100 cheque cancellation fee £30 month for internet that whoever moves into this house uses = £270 £275 non-refundable depost from here £275 (estimate) deposit from the new house TOTAL = £920 By moving, we'd save £750 So, I'd get sued and blacklisted in order to move into sub-standard accomodation, and as an extra added bonus, I'd have to pay around £170 for the privilage of getting sued and blacklisted in order to move into said sub standard accomodation. *beats her to death with a coconut* How does NO sound as an answer, you selfish, crazy bitch? Oh yeah, and here's the REAL kicker. I heard her on the phone last night to her boyfriend. "And if anything DOES go wrong it's okay, because I can just go live with my godmother [she lives in Notts in a nice big house]." DO YOU SEE ME WITH A GODMOTHER IN NOTTS?! Selfish fucking little shit. Of course, I talked to her earlier, and she said "I'd rather you move with me because you'll probably get raped and burgled at best if you stay here alone, but I'll move without you if I have to." I started watching Firefly over again and got to watching "Safe" and ended up giggling a lot of the time. I was yelling at the TV. Mal was talking to Simon (Jayne was smackin' the cows) and telling him to take River into town and all I could do was yell "Tonto! Don't go to town!", which then led to an amusing tirade of "You go to hell, Kemosabe Mal" remarks and me giggling inanely. Anthony thinks I'm slightly weird. And then Kaylee and Inara were in the shop talking about carved ducks and how Simon is *so dreamy* and all I could do was look at the BIG GIANT HEAD and think about the caption game. Which then also had me giggling at all the comments. I was obviously in a mood then and you don't even want to know the sorts of comments I was making about Gabriel Tam. See? You're all invading my Firefly watching brain. Are you happy now?

I’ve mentioned [I]Sluggy Freelance[/I] in one of my blogs before. It’s one of the most hilarious comic strips I’ve ever read. Well, reading through some of the older stories, I ran into a story I totally forgot about. [I]Muffin the Vampire Baker.[/I] I think the author/artist of this comic; Pete Abrams is a bit of Buffy fan. Maybe even a fan of Whedon's work. I could be wrong though. [I]Sluggy Freelance[/I] has been running since 1997 and most of the characters have developed throughout the story, but it’s just as funny and the writer continues to treat his readers as intelligent people. If you start reading the story, start from the very beginning. I promise… it’s worth it. But… you don’t need much, if any, back-story to enjoy these: [b]Muffin the Vampire Baker[/b] is mostly a stand-alone story that centers on one of the (not so major) characters, Sam. Sam’s a vampire. It’s a long story. Sam also has some character flaws that make him painfully endearing. Ok, not endearing but just funny.

OMG, I swear, I had nothing to do with this. It wasn't my doing. My nephews were over at my house and were mighty bored, they've been bugging me to see 'Serenity', but as they're 7 and 9 I've been telling them no. But I told them they could watch Firefly if they wanted. They agreed. I started with the 'Train Job', 'cause I figure, it has trains, bar fights, big ugly men with tattoos getting kicked into turbine engines, what could go wrong? Kyle, 9, loved the barfight. "This is a dirty fight! They're throwing dirt at each other! And kicking shins!". He also thinks that Inara is "a very beautiful lady". Liam, 7, was much more enamoured with Kaylee. He thinks she's pretty. They liked it, Kyle especially fell in love with Jayne and couldn't stop laughing at doped up Jayne "wha? I was aimin' for his head!". So I thought, maybe, Jaynestown, 'cause more drinking, fighting, a statue, etc... Anyways, Liam, who in 'The Train Job' saw Kaylee bicker with Jayne, then run to him when he was shot and hover over him in the med bay, and then watched her tease him over the statue and sit next to him and joke with him at the bar... he got mighty confused when Jayne went upstairs with that other woman and Kaylee sat with Simon. He was very upset. Awww. Heee! My seven year old nephew is a Jaylee fan. (I'm so proud). I swear, again, it wasn't my doing. Another amusing fact... Kyle, who had started up the chant of "Kill him! Kill him!" when Stitch and Jayne were fighting, was highly offended when the little boy handed Jayne back his knife and Jayne snatched it. "He shouldn't have snatched it, that was rude!". So, in the 9 yr old brain, killing is perfectly acceptible, but snatching is not. Okay then.

And I don't think anyone would get it :crap: Anyone got any ideas?

An update to my other blog in which I said I wasn't going to take my nephews to see "Serenity" (a movie which they've been dying to see since they've seen my Visual Companion and trading cards and the extended trailer on my comp). Anyways, after watching a few episodes of Firefly and getting really excited, they finally wore me down (and, hey, selling more tickets to the BDM, who can complain about that?), with the promise to let me know if it got too scary for them. It was a really quiet session and we were able to talk freely without bothering anyone. Anyways... #### HERE BE SPOILERS ### ### SPOILERS I TELLS YE ### As you can imagine, both the 7 and 9 year old boys giggled and were insanely happy when River grabbed Jayne's balls. Kyle, 9, upon seeing the Operative kick Inara across the room: "He hurt a woman! Oh, he really *is* a bad guy. *pause*. And I wouldn't call him a gentleman at all." He got right into it. And when Mal sneaks up onto the bridge to stop River: "Keep your gun ready, that's it, that's it, yes, keep your gun ready... Ohhhh no." I had to reassure both of them that there were no Reavers on Miranda. And he couldn't even speak with the whole "leaf on the wind" scene. Could. Not. Speak. His mouth just fell open and he stared at the screen. They loved it, they were highly impressed by the fact that it was the 'same people' in the 'same ship' with the 'same bad guys' (Reavers and Alliance) as the TV show.

Wash has often reminded me of Wembly Fraggle. Goofy, Hawaiian Shirt wearing, Jocular, and a little bit of a fraidy cat at times. I always liked Wembly. Now, it's funny that my first two entries are about Wash, when, as you should be able to tell from my name, and icon, I am a major fan of Simon Tam. I guess I am just coming to terms with Wash not beeing around any longer.

As a relatively new browncoat I've gone through the cycle of wild excitement at discovering the series, desperate frustration for new episodes, and turning to fanfic to ease the pain. All in about three weeks. I highly recommend it. So I wrote my own pseudo-episode in four acts -

Doot, Doot, Do Do Do Doot! **As promised, a simon rant** So, I am wondering just where Sean Mahr came from. I am sure there is a bio somewhere, but i am not sure I will believe anything it would have to say, unless it was "Planet of Irrationaly Hot Men-PIHM for short" Or, like "Finland" Now, folks, I am a 23 year old woman. That makes me sound younger than I am I think. I am engaged, I own my own home, I think on a rational level. Except when Simon Tam is on the screen. Then I am a swoony 13 year old girl. I honestly hope I never meet him (Sean Mahr), because it would be the most embarrassing day of my life. I doubt I would be able to form words. I should learn sign language, just in case. Or maybe carry flash cards.

I am a late comer on the FIREFLY fan-net. But better I am here, and I'm not going anywhere. A friend wanted to see the Serenity the movie and told me that it was based on a series. The explaination intrigued me enough to check out at least the first episode... I was HOOKED! it wasn't a sci-fi.. ie no aliens, no big giant foreheads or bad over acting. The characters were real. Rounded. And intriguing. Even though I had only watched the first episode (part 1 & 2), I couldn't wait to watch the film. Serenity the movie was INCREDIBLE. It stayed true to the characters. Leaving me wanting more. So i bought the DVD. Watched it ever night, dreamt about it, thought about it during work.. Analyzing it. Falling in love with it. I can't say that there's ever been a series that I ever loved so much. It is intelligent. witty. adventurous... and so much more. I am incredibly sad that there is no more... I'm preying and writing (to Fox.. to anyone else who will listen) for the series return - in any reincarnation. (tv series, films, straight to dvd). I've grown attached to the each character - not a single one I do not like... well maybe for "Saffron" oh she gets to me.. maybe it's cause she tried to seduce and kill our crew ;) Losing FIREFLY is like losing .. family. And watching the last episode.. left me.. wanting MORE

I can sit here and cook and clean, while just listening to the dialogue after seeing the series too many times. The interaction between the characters and the development of the plot is all I need. It's just too shiny.

I know I'm gonna be blasted for this but here goes anyway...I don't really care for the song that opens Firefly up...and it's not that I don't care for the lyrics...the lyrics are poetry at its most simple and beautiful...they're about freedom and inner peace and strength...I just don't like the music it's being sung too, although it fits the series perfectly...*sighs*...yes I know fellow Browncoaters, it's blasphemous...I almost feel as if I'm betraying my loyalty to the show by saying it...but that it is how I feel...but on a good note...the lyrics can bring tears to your eyes! "pretty cunning, don't cha' think?"

These are a small shout out to the wonderfully random peeps! You know who you are. Serenitypunk you've been fantastic. Also a tribute to my occasionally crazy mind. In no particular order. * Is it odd to be dreaming about going to a convention? * Is it weird to be dreaming about wearing a kick ass costume for fancy dress at previously mentioned convention? * It is exctremely annoying to not remember what the kick ass costume was. * Is it odd that it only takes one bottle of beer to get me dunk? * Note to self, don't eat halloween sweets bought by housemates for trick or treaters. They can tell you've eaten it when you start to skip round the room. * Working 20 hour shifts are never fun but I still do them at least 4 times a year! Madness! * Sarcasm does not come across well over the internet. There should be some sort of sarcasm button you can press to let others know. * Random people on the internet are way cooler than the random people I know in real life. * Carving a pumpkin is much harder than I thought it would be. * Whether you believe in ghosts or not 'Most Haunted' scares me silly! * Note to self, switch off mobile phone if you want to sleep in at weekends! Well, I got to go to the BDM again today. I saw it opening weekend and then again the following week (on a Tuesday). I was excited to get another chance to go. The theater showing Serenity had dropped it from 2 screens to 1 and I started thinking time was getting short. When I got there I was pleasantly surprised to see way more people than I'd expected. I'd thought a 1:30 show on a Saturday a day short of a month after the movie was released would be pretty lightly attended. Boy, was I wrong!! Needless to say, I enjoyed the movie just as much as I did opening weekend...without the tears. My chest got tight and my heart sped up and I jumped when Simon got shot, even though I knew it was going to happen. I was able to listen to the music more and pay more attention to exactly WHEN there was "sound in space" and when there wasn't (how well [i]does[/i] sound carry in the thermosphere?). I can't wait for the video! After the show I stayed for the credits and the lady two seats over from me stayed as well. I've no idea how old she was, though I'd guess in her late 60's. We started talking and it turns out she'd only seen a few Firefly episodes. I mentioned that I have the DVDs and we talked about them for a bit. (I mentioned libraries and Amazon.com.) She really enjoyed the BDM (of course!). This was the first time I've ever gotten to talk with a complete stranger about the movie or Firefly. What fun.

I actually saw "Serenity" before seeing any episodes of "Firefly." After seeing the movie though, I had the interest in watching the complete series, so I did. And now, I'm hooked. :p I just wish there would be another season.

The way that Serenity ended it left me wishing for another movie. I could have watched it for hours. somthing is telling me that there is going to be another movie. The jurney of Serenity and it's crew isn't over. I know that Joss likes to finish his shows/movies open endedly (buffy and Angel) but this seemed like there was a bit of lead. Besides I think I can speak for almost every Firefly fan when I say that Mal isn't ready to settle down yet. The only problem of doing another movie would be the lack of Wash. SERENITY WILL FLY AGAIN ~I Hope~

Argh! So, I’m looking at the dish guide and I see LIFEFORCE listed. I think, ‘Wow. That movie was awful, I need to watch it again. Nothin better than space vampires in London…sweet!’ I select the channel, excited as can be, but there’s no LIFEFORCE. What do I find? Another freakin ad for Proactive. What the heck?! Do I need to see Diddy and Vanessa discussing the pleasant burning sensation of the special Proactive Toner? Nope…I need to see Picard before he was Picard. Gorramit! Stupid proactive. Now I'm stuck watchin' Last Action Hero...sigh...where's the space vampire? Oooh! Goonies...

What is a blog? This is my question. I see 'blog' every'bouts I go on our newfangled interweb, the cortex.. Well, since I'm guessing its some sort of diary-like..thing..I mean to use it as such. I'm not sure if its interacty. Should that be the case, please feel free to fire away, a correspondence is something not to be sneezed at! So, I feel compelled to explore the new and exciting world of Blogdom, and I would like my discovery to be peppered with these 'emoticons' that flash away amiably to my left, excepting the fact that my hwoon dahn of a computer won't allow it (oooh, first use of mandarin in a 'blog', get her!). Perhaps it thinks them fanciful, or demeaning to the noble art of the written word (in which case it should pay closer attention to the ramblin' nonsense I am prone to spewing, and remove the peg from it's RAM)... Anyway, I find I rather like them, though its possibly because they're forbidden! Probably time to end the ramble for now, much carving of pumpkins to be done, not to mention the casting of spells...I hope to delve into the greater realm of the 'Verse on my next whatchamacallit. The Poseidon drifted along in the vast emptiness of the far reaches of space. The dim blue glow of its outmoded engines seemed to fade weakly in and out struggling to remain functional. It drifted on its axis, nose pointed downward, exposing a gaping gash in its hull with fragments of the ship littered throughout surrounding space. On its’ Bridge sat a lone man, naked and exhausted. Droplets of fresh blood trickled from his ear. He did not wipe it away as it streamed down his neck. Oil stains and thick black engine grease smeared his chest and abdomen, a piece of the ships’ engine was sticking out of his right thigh. Lights were flashing on the console in front of him as a computerized voice repeated, “Alert. Alert. The ship has sustained severe damage. Sectors 13 thru 17 have been sealed.” Hours passed as the young man simply stared at nothing in particular. He was in shock. The horrors he had lived in the past month was more than his mind could comprehend. Images of his crewmates taunting him, beating his face and body, flashed in his minds’ eye, each relived blow registering a physical pain response.

I'm sittin' here listenin' to the BDM soundtrack, my heart aching as the last 4 pieces play out to the end... where my heart soars with Serenity... I know, I'm overwrought! :) My husband who is not a Firefly fan, but who indulges me, took me to the next big town to the music shop and helped me get it. Bless his pea pickin'heart. As I was listenin' I'm perusin' the site and reading all the entries and it also makes my heart near to burst.... I love this place, I truly love this place. How did I ever live without being here and being in love with this 'verse? I dunno... but I'm sure a hell of a lot happier now!

For those of you reading this, your in for a little somthing speacial. I am going to be placing in this blog a piece of a script I am writing. Just to see what some of you might think about it. A white canvas is penetrated by two small dots. The warmth of the blood cuts deep into the snow and the mist of somones slow breathing dances across the scene for but a moment. The shadows of trees is all around the two of them. The only light being provided by the silver rays of the moon. It had been a long night for the both of them. Chased from the event of the parade and past the old hida village. The gang of his old friends had persued the two of them mercilessly into the woods. Their leader to continue on alone despite his friends complaints. He nearly killed Junsuke, trying to get at his girlfriend. It amazed him really. There was a point in his life where Junsuke would not think about the issue. But now...he thought. He couldn't understand how such hatred could be sparked at a few simple words. These were the actions of a desperate man. A man unable to better himself and instead resort to bloody violence at the words said. A soft hand reached under Junsuke's chin, lifting his head heavenward. His eye was bloody and he was sore, but her sight gave him new life. She helped him to his feet. There is no talking, its a moment shared between a couple destined for each other. You don't need words. He holds her tight and she returns the favor, he did after all keep a beast from attacking her. The silver rays of the moon light the small specs of snow falling from the sky above. The small lamps and lights of the town below them glistened in the black. Junsuke held her off a moment to better look at her. Her cheeks were rose from the cold outside and he gently stroke her face. Junesuke: Anata wa haru ichiban no sakura no yoni utsukushii. Thats all you get, its not a romance movie. It does have that aspect to it. If you had to lable it, it would fall under the lines of a drama.

So I’ve been at my new job now for 5 weeks and have been much too “busy and important” to update my log and tell you all how it’s going … Nevertheless, I shall now: It’s great – don’t know why I was so worried … All I can say is – hurrah for work!!! (Shocking, I know) All I need now is a decent man who doesn’t freak out at my film obsession and I’m good … And so, with those seemingly benign words, began project “Find Weirdo”, on which I will update you all again soon (I like to pretend you’re all interested)… Actually the trainee I share a room with has a friend who allegedly fancies me – but I think he’s only seen me sitting down and doesn’t realise I’m short and plump – but we shall see …

SKYSCRAPER

It’s the little details that get to me sometimes. Stories can be as realistic, or not, as the writers choose. But it’s how they treat their viewers/readers that matters more. Did Joss ever find the need to explain how the engine (that makes the firefly glowish thing) work? If he did… I missed it. But we mostly picked up on it being used to push the ship into high speed for long travel. Was it ever explained why Chinese and English are the predominant languages/culture? Nope. The series began with what we did needed to know Malcom’s experience at Serenity Valley. Or the Cortex. What is that? I don’t have the Movie Visual Companion yet, I’m sure its explained there. But during the show, did someone say, "I’ll look it up on Cortex, which is basically this huge internet/communication system spread over the solar system, you click here on the display and…" I think we figured that out ourselves. It doesn’t need explaining. The audience will figure it out sooner or later. Besides… knowing the characters, Zoe would have probably shot anyone who talked like a ‘walking dictionary’ to her. At least she would have shot 'politely.' Sometimes, the subtle stuff is also nicely researched. Consider this scene from the Firefly pilot [i]Serenity[/i]. Near the end of the episode when the Reaver ship begins its entry into Whitefall. We see the ship flying backwards (tail first) with its 3 main engines firing. This serves to slow the vessel down enough that it begins to fall towards the planet. Then the engines shutdown and the ship rotates back to a “nose ahead” flight and continue fall through atmo. NASA Space Shuttles do something very similar to this at the beginning of the reentry sequence. How did the crew know each other? What’s their story? Except for hints and things we, the viewers, pick up on, it’s almost eight episodes into the series before we get any back story on the characters. That is truly a display of faith for the viewers. And, on Firefly, how did we cope with ships doing flybys in space, yet no noise? That took daring to do on TV. But it provided some of the most powerful moments too. Think of the end of [i]Bushwhacked[/i] when an Alliance Cruiser fires missiles at the derelict transport ship. No noise as the missiles streak toward the transport. No noise as the transport is torn to pieces in an explosion. The only thing we hear, during that whole sequence, is a violin piece from the soundtrack. Even with gigantic cruiser nearby, you still feel an immense loneliness for our crew. As I’ve seen the movie, and watched the DVD a couple of times, I keep getting more impressed, on how Whedon treated his viewers with intelligence. He let the story tell itself. He felt it was strong enough for people to understand without being spoon fed every little detail. Sometimes, not all the detail is necessary. And I, at least, appreciate being given the benefit of the doubt. This is truly a story. Just had this in my head for a while. Figured I’d finally write it somewhere.
