What. The actual. Fuck. Why?
Just on a personal level: I know a bunch of people who went to midnight screenings last night. Waking up and hearing that a Colorado theater got shot up scared the ever-living shit out of me.
And a baby? I mean, yeah, I think they should have just stayed home and stuff because crying babies in theaters are obnoxious and they're always going to cry, but that's pretty horrific for the parents.
It's strange, though, the last three movies I've gone to see have been full of inconsiderate people. I don't just mean the people who bring their babies or kids, either. I've had to ask three separate groups of adults if their conversation was really that important because they were murmuring to each other for half the damn movie. Seriously, dude, if you came here to chat, there's a nice lobby you can sit in. The theater is not your living room. I've kind of wished they'd go back to the idea of an usher in every theater.
Sorry, side tangent there. But maybe some large, burly ushers would solve both problems? I dunno, probably not. The sad reality seems to be that if someone really wants to empty a gun at a room full of people, there's very little that can be done to stop them. They might get taken down afterwards, but it would take a Superman-esque reaction time to stop someone before they empty a clip.![]()
What reason had proved best ceased to look absurd to the eye, which shows how idle it is to think anything ridiculous except what is wrong.

Kelly: Colorado Movie Theater Shooting Suspect Claimed To Be Batman Nemesis ‘The Joker’
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the gunman suspected of attacking a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado resembled Batman’s arch-villain “The Joker” at the time of the shocking attack.
“We have some information, most of it is public. It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He had his hair painted red, he said he was ‘The Joker,’ obviously the ‘enemy’ of Batman,” Kelly said at a news conference after noon.
Kelly said the NYPD is stepping up security at movie theaters around the city after suspect James Holmes walked into a Colorado movie theater during a midnight showing of the new Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises” and opened fire, killing 12 people and injuring dozens more.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly called the shooting “horrendous” and said the NYPD is working to keep moviegoers safe.
“As a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is playing in the five boroughs,” Kelly said.

Ten people were killed inside the theater and two others died at the hospital after a gas mask-wearing gunman stood at the front of the theater and fired into the crowd about 12:30 a.m. local time at a theater in a mall in Aurora, Colo., police said.
A 3-month-old was among those hurt, CBS Denver reported. Police said earlier that 14 people had died, but later said that only 12 fatalities were confirmed.
The suspect, who police have identified as 24-year-old Holmes, is in custody. Federal officials told CBS News the suspect didn’t resist when he was arrested.

Holmes spoke of “possible explosives in his residence,” Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said after Holmes’ arrest.
Police have confirmed that Holmes’ apartment is booby-trapped and have evacuated surrounding buildings.
Oates said bomb technicians are determining how to disarm flammable or explosive material in the third-floor apartment. He said police could be there some time.
He said pictures from inside the apartment are fairly disturbing and the devices look to be sophisticated.
One rifle, two handguns, a knife, a bullet proof vest, a ballistic helmet, a gas device, a gas mask, military swat clothing and unidentified explosives were also found in Holmes’ car, a law enforcement source told CBS News.
Holmes has no known criminal record and records show he previously lived in San Diego, CBS News reported.
He was a student at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver until last month, said school spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery. She did not know when he started school or why he withdrew.
The attack appears to have been planned well in advance, a law enforcement source told CBS News.
Police said his car was parked in the rear of the theater and that the suspect entered and exited the theater through an emergency door. There is also evidence that he may have done surveillance of the theater before the shooting, the source said.
“Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,” Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said at a news conference.

When the gas began to spread, some moviegoers thought it was a stunt that was part of the movie. Then they saw a silhouette of a person in the smoke near the screen, first pointing a gun at the crowd and shooting.
“There were bullet (casings) just falling on my head. They were burning my forehead,” Jennifer Seeger said, adding that the gunman, dressed like a SWAT team member, fired steadily except when he stopped to reload.
“Every few seconds it was just:

Yeah, and if only one movie patron HADN'T carried all his guns, 50 shootings would never have happened.

He was not a patron. He did not have a ticket.
Or do you think they sell tickets to guys wearing gas masks carrying swords and rifles?

Hello,
I consider this to be a rather unintelligent suggestion- one that assumes each human being is a Rambo waiting to spring into action.
The attack was well-planned in a dark-theater and involved teargas. The panic, darkness, confusion, and debilitation may have served to render the average person insensible and useless even if they were armed.
It isn't reasonable for a person to be expected to take decisive action against unexpected aggression in such a chaotic encounter.
I believe in arms for defense, but I do not believe that me and my fellow humans are Jack Bauer or John Mcclane. Even trained officers of the law were hesitant to enter the situation in the theater due to a lack of gas masks. Gas masks that none of the victims had while they were being assaulted.
I believe it's much more likely that myself and my fellow humans, even if armed, would have panicked and flailed in useless confusion in the midst of this unexpected attack from a barely perceived source while choking on gas and peering through tears and stumbling on blood and bodies. I don't know what the percentage of natural born killers is in the population, but I do not presume it is as highly concentrated as 1 in 50. I certainly do not assume I am one of the magic human predators capable of responding while in the midst of such a mess.

Oh, please, can we NOT get on the gun rant again? Just FYI, and not to make ANY point pro or con guns, as to someone with a gun being able to help, he was wearing a bullet-proof vest, and the place was full of tear gas. That's all I'll say on that matter.
Trying to connect him to anything political--at least until we know more--is totally assinine. So snarking about "left-wing media" trying to connect him to the Tea Party is the equivalent of Breitbart trying to say he's a Democrat; both are idiotic.Quote:
So everybody's going to be going off half-cocked, just as happened here, to blame something or someone. The comments in this article started right out "Mark my words.. he played first person shooter games, socially isolated". So why don't we take the high road, discuss what HAPPENED and not try to put the blame anywhere but on the man himself, at LEAST until we know something more substantial, eh? Or not.
It turns out that Holmes, who has roots in San Diego, was student at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora. He was in the process of withdrawing at the time of the shooting, university officials said. He was a doctoral student in the neuroscience program.
A college syllabus that lists Holmes as a student shows that he may have taken a class in which he studied topics as diverse as substance abuse, schizophrenia, depression and other disorders.
Holmes had enrolled at the university in June 2011.
Police also revealed that Holmes lived in a small apartment on Paris Street in Aurora, in Apartment 10.
Large chunks of Holmes' past prior to medical school remain unknown.
The Poway Unified School District in San Diego confirmed that James Holmes graduated from Westview High School in 2006.
But his friends, his interests and his personality remained a mystery. http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/20/us/colorado-theater-suspect-profile/inde

I just read a little deeper into the story than the headline. It was in Aurora, Colorado. My daughter is there. We haven't heard from her, but that's not unusual, and she isn't the type to go to a midnight screening of a Batman movie.
ETA- 12:10 PM California time. Mrs. BrownCoat called her. She answered the phone, " Hi, Mom. Yeah, I'm alive."

re PN's post:
How does a Police Commissioner in New York City KNOW ANYTHING factual about something that happened last night/ early this morning, in Aurora, Colorado?
He wouldn't like it if Colorado papers started printing something about a crime in NYC, he'd be holding press conferences declaring that it's way too soon to have all the facts collected.
For that matter, how do Breibart, or the MSM or the NRA or anybody else KNOW ANYTHING FACTUAL AT ALL yet?

Uhhh, you do realize you're questioning PN's post, don't you? I don't even bother reading, I just get a sore scrolling finger getting past his idiocy.Quote:
Oh, I get it...Obama and the dems sent that guy in so they could start going after your guns! Isn't that what Fsst & Furious was supposed to do? MUST be a democratic conspiracy!
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an outspoken advocate of stricter gun-control laws, said in a radio interview Friday the two candidates for president needed to take a firmer line in addressing gun violence.
Bloomberg's comments came as police and the FBI were investigating a deadly shooting in Colorado that left at least 12 people dead. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/
My heart goes out to the actual people involved; I think Bloomberg is out of his mind if he thinks ANY efforts at gun control could conceivably be possible in this country. It's almost funny to even imagine it.
As to how the media knows anything, you can be sure five minutes after it happened, media all over the country was digging around to find out what they could, hopefully sooner than any OTHER media. The stuff I put up would have been easily ascertained...we'll see what else they come up with, and if the initial reporting is accurate or not (given THAT's happened in the recent past, too). Right now they're just madly scrounging around to find out ANYTHING they can that others haven't already reported.
Glad your girl is fine, NewOld. I stopped going to movies years ago, because of the hassle and the price. I wait for stuff to come around on Netflix. The only actual movies I've gone to see in years were the Lord of the Rings trilogy (HAD to see it on the big screen, given how big it's been to me) and 2012--in all cases, it was worth it. But there has to be something that looks REAL promising to get me to the theater--Batman sure ain't it, tho' I AM sorry I missed Avatar on the big screen.

One thing I WILL say, look at his picture- dyed in the wool nutcase. Probably with self-prescribed pharma escalation. Eyes glassy & unfocused.
Oh, and NO ONE at all feels his vibe? Thinks it's funny he's buying guns? Explosive material?
Theatre-wise, ONE FUCKING USHER checking doors could have prevented/limited this. Oh, no ushers anymore. Well, the theatre corporation saved themselves a lot of money.
Smaller version of 9-11 here. No or shit security for BUDGETARY reasons. Save a buck; lose some lives.

Blah, blah, I know it's not much use responding to PN, but this is actually the most intelligible comment I've ever seen from him, so it's worth a try.
He did have a ticket, and he didn't get his weapons until after, according to reports I've read:
Quote:
Officials said the suspect purchased a ticket for the show and once inside the theater propped open an emergency exit door, which he later entered after retrieving four weapons and a tear gas canister.
