Acquiring automatic weapons legally is a somewhat involved process involving a large fee for registration and a thorough background check. It takes a bit of time, and none of that has anything to do with what happened in the theater as far as I know. (In any event, this critter probably *could* have gotten automatic weapons had he chosen to. Word so far is that he had no criminal history. Thus far, I've not heard about any red flags on this guy. Maybe that will come out later.)

As far as I know, it's a state that respects gun rights. I do not think armed patrons in the audience would have been able to make a suitable response to this well-planned and unexpected assault. On the other hand, I would be surprised if there were armed patrons in the audience. I live in Arizona, the epicentre of wild-west gun laws, and every theater I've ever been to here has a no-weapons policy.
I really don't think this is a story about guns. Nor security and preparedness. Nor about children in the wrong movie at the wrong hour. This is a story about a crazy man deciding to kill a bunch of people and making a good plan for it. It would be no less horrific if he'd thrown homemade explosives into the audience or run up and down the aisles with a chainsaw. This was pandemonium and carnage that nobody could hope to plan for or defend against. Sometimes, dangerous and crazy people happen. I'm glad we can at least study this one and better understand him- and hopefully- everyone else who might become like him.

From the description of this guy's abilities and competences, I'm fairly sure he could have passed any rigorous driver's licence examination. We know for certain he could pass a background check.
Everything I've read so far suggests that this fellow is smarter than I am. I never finished college, never mind the difficult subject matter.

OK, I'm no gun expert and I don't want to be, so let's not get into one of those threads that seems to take over here whenever guns are mentioned (where we lovingly caress every detail of every firearm we own...) The info I'm going on is this, from updates on huffpost:

Some versions of the AR-15 assault rifle that police said was one of three guns James Holmes carried into the movie theater massacre were outlawed for civilian sale under the federal assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. Since then, all versions have been legal for sale and possession in the U.S.
The AR-15, widely distributed by more than two dozen manufacturers in a range of calibers, is a semi-automatic rifle that fires shots individually, with each pull of the trigger. Aftermarket parts available at sporting goods stores include magazines big enough to hold 90 bullets. AP reports Holmes' gun was equipped with a high-capacity, drum-style magazine.
Why the fuck does anyone need to buy a gun "equipped with a high-capacity, drum-style magazine", other than to kill lots of people fast?
And if someone does think they have a reason to buy such a thing, shouldn't they be going through one helluva complicated process? One that *might* figure out that this is a crazy guy who's been buying explosives and such? It's looking to me like the signs were there for this guy, same as they've been for most mass murderers.

One of the guns I used to own was an SKS 1950's era Russian 'assault rifle' with an internal 10-round stripper-clip fed magazine. The particular model of which had features which might also cause it to be outlawed by the prior assault weapons ban. Such a ban being an excellent example of a poorly framed law.
If there is a 'complicated process' that would have protected the world from a capable, intelligent, law-abiding college graduate who was in a doctorate's program, I'd like to hear it. Then I can judge its validity. At the moment, all I'm hearing is kneejerk responses to a tragedy. It's understandable, but if we are going to advocate a change of policy or law, we should do so from an informed, logical place.

Hey,
Everyone saying that this tragedy would have been remedied by one or more folks with guns: you do realize that the shooter PLANNED for that contingency? Hence the smoke bombs and the flackjacket. Bam, simple-minded one-step knee-jerk "solution" twarted by the killer. So if any would-be rambos had been there, they'd probably be among the dead. If there ever was a case where "more guns won't solve the problem," this is it.

Someone who is in debt from college ($150,000) and has no job couldn't afford 2 glocks (about $550 each), an AR-15 with a 100-ROUND Gangsta drum mag and an eotech sight ($2000), a Remington Shotgun (about $700), body armor, tear gas, and a gas mask from his protest with Occupy Wall Street for Obama's Nazi jew George Soros. There is much more to this that we will never know. My guess he will be labeled schizophrenic (and maybe he is) because he heard voices tell him to do this.
If he was bent on killing as many as possible, why tell the police about the apartment? Don't know? Something is off.
And this was a white doctor shooting BLACK people in a black neighborhood......Obama's wet dream of a Race War to get re-selected.
