the post about wash looking like one of the characters from fraggle rock got me thinking, what are people's favorite cartoons or children's television shows from when they were young? considering the state of children's shows on the mainstream networks these days, i kind of miss those days of the smurfs, which was my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE show when i was young. anyway, what are some others?

for me, in no particular order:

the smurfs (as i said)
garfield and friends
ducktales :) - thought the movie was pretty fun too!

I didn't watch much TV as a kid, but around middle school I got hooked on Animaniacs, and it's STILL my favorite cartoon of all time, and 2nd favorite TV show after Firefly.

Ha, Star Blazers was supreme - had to climb up on the roof and rig the most jackwire antenna you ever saw (yes i was a child tinker-genius, so sue me!) in order to pull in a channel from another state cause that was the only way I could watch it - staticcy picture, no color, fair sound quality, and I still loved every damn minnit.

Other than that - Bugs Bunny, Merry Melodies and crew... those dorks who ran them off the air citing 'violence' and suchlike must have never looked at the damned things - just how MUCH folklore, history, and appreciation for classical music did YOU learn from ole Bugs and crew ?
(fer damn sure Blue Danube sounds awful strange to me without the two 'off' notes, lol!)

Anyhow, tis my rant there, too bad cartoons these days are half hour product advertisments.. gah..

OH!, one good shout out on a semi-modern one - Animaniacs, yer supposed to watch it with yer kids as it has jokes for adults in it too, and followed in the same footsteps on culture and learning as ole Bugs did.

These were on Australian TV in the 80's, so forgive me if some of you don't know all of these -

1. Battle of the Planets
2. Voltron (especially the one where Voltron was made from mechanical lions)
3. She-Ra, and to a lesser extent He Man.
4. Jem. (Truly, truly, truly outrageous!)

Oh, and how about "Monkey"? Gotta have some monkey magic. And Press Gang!(Spike and Linda - yay!)and Degrassi High! You Can't Do That On Television! Oh, oh, and the Wuzzles! Thundercats (or Chundercats as we called them) and, and, and...

On another note - what happened to the good old days, when children's programming was for selling action figures instead of collector card games?? Tsk, Tsk.

HeMan, She Ra, Dungeons and Dragons, Cities of Gold, Ulysses, Fantastic Four oh yeah and The Magic Roundabout and Ivor the Engine. Oh dear..... I can still remember all these. They just don't make 'em like they used to........

I was lucky. I just managed to catch the last of the re-runs of all those great old cartoons back when I went to my Grandparents house to watch Cartoon Network all day (and all night)

I had a serious crush on Johnny Quest, and when the NEW Adventures of Johnny Quest came out, i wanted to BE Jessie.

Tom & Jerry
Bugs Bunny and all those other Loony Toones/Merry Melodies.
Fantastic Four
Scooby Doo
Batman/Superman/Justice Leauge
ORIGONAL Sealab 2020 (although I LOVE that Sealab 2021 crap on adult swim)

There was also some show where there was a never-ending race (i think some of it was in the air, and some of it was in cars), with some evil bad guy and his dog hatching these off the wall scheames to win. There was also something about catching a pigeon (can't remember why though). There was also some chick in pink called Penolope Pitstop.

There was also some show in, like, the mid ninties that ran for a season and a half then got inexplicably cancled (sound familiar?). It was called the SWAT Kats and that was my all time favoirte show. They were these humanioid cats (kats) who flew around in a jet and got bad guys. They had some cool bad guys on that show too.

Aww, who am i kidding, I STILL watch cartoons.

It's been so many years that I forgot, but the original Johnny Quest was my favorite cartoon ever. Also, liked Clutch Cargo even though it had poor animation. The best cartoons I ever saw were the ones when my family lived in Japan in the mid-60's, but I don't remember the names - they were all in Japanese anyway.

COMPLETELY forgot about danger mouse! he was the best! penfold too! i remember the villan being a toad, but i cannot remember his name! i remember his pet, though. nero the caterpillar. :) what was danger mouse's boss' name? i remember he looked like a beaver or woodchuck or something. i also remember these little cartoon shorts that were shown right before danger mouse called bananaman. OUTRAGEOUSLY FUNNY! i loved that too, mainly because the hero (bananaman himself!) had the same name as me.

the baddy was baron greenback with his hench crow stiletto and dm's boss was colonel k.

glad to see batfink get a mention too, i was about to add him.

transformers. always my fave (hence my big toy collection i've amassed as an (alleged) adult)
mask. dodgy kinda transformers rip off, but in a subtle way, was kinda fun
the centurions. power extreme :) i wanted to be the flying guy
spiderman and his amazing friends. mmmm, firestar.
starfleet. jap puppet space opera with mecha, great then, still great now. involving story arcs and everything.

i never saw much of robotech as a kid, don't think they pushed it over here in blighty like they seemed to in the states, but i've recently watched (quite) a few episodes on suprnova and loved it lots and finally found somewhere to pick up the dvds to finish watching my way through the macross saga. and as a transfan it's great to see all those jetfires around :) seriously though, it's good to see a long involved storyline with some real character progression rather than a bunch of disconnected storylines, kill off a load of characters, bring in a load of new characters and their toys to flog. yes transformers the movie, i'm looking at you. i love you, but you're guilty as hell.

how could i forget that?! have to amend my list. TMNT was great! i thought the show had a great mix of action and humor. i do not remember most of the episodes, but i remember one when kang gets his "hands" on some kind of new robot thingy and he goes around terrorizing everyone (of course) and when he first gets the robot, he says something like "there's nothing like the smell of a new robot interior". you have to admit, to a 10 year old, that is pretty funny. i especially liked the episode when michaelangelo and shredder switch bodies. HI-larious!

Sunday morning was Popeye time. One of the local stations (KTLA) had the "Adventures of Popeye" with a host who wore a sailor hat (Tom Hatten). He had a big barrel full of reader mail and one of his schticks was to invite viewers to send in random squiggles. He would start with the squiggle and turn it into Popeye characters. It was like magic to watch him draw the characters so quickly. I can't remember if it was one hour or two hours of Popeye cartoons interspersed with the host setting up each cartoon. And (I may be conflating two shows here) they would slip in Tom Slick, Super Chicken, and George of the Jungle shorts.

Nature has infinite variety. Straight lines? Not so much.

Fraggle Rock was my absolute favorite! I wish they'd hurry up and put the seasons out on DVD. Also, the Muppet Show. I loved the cranky guys in the balcony.

Something alway bothered me about She-Ra, though. You ever notice that she doesn't solve problems by herself? She always uses either help from her woodland creature friends or call on He-Man for help. It's not very empowering.

I loved Terrahawks, the Gerry Anderson marionation. I just bought the DVD box set and it's still as good, though now I'm older I can understand more of the jokes. My favourite character was the camp zeroid Space Station 101!

In Atlanta we had "Officer Don and the Popeye Club" with a live audience. I still love the old black and white Popeye cartoons, before Bluto changed to Brutus.

No one has mentioned the old Hanna-Barbera toons: Deputy Dawg, Quick-draw McGraw, Yogi Bear, Augie Doggie. How about Beanie and Cecil? Astroboy, the original Anime.

Concerning that list of race cartoons for Ebo, it is notable that while they were different shows, they shared quite a few characters between them. My favorite was the mad scientist inventor RegUS PatOff...

I think my favorites are the result of no cable TV.
I watched Mr Peppermint when I was really little. It's not a cartoon but kinda of a Captain Kangaroo type of show. I dunno if anyone outside Texas ever saw it, but it always stands out in my mind.
Anyway, actual cartoons:
HannaBarbera and Loony Toons
Scooby Doo-(pre Scrappy-doo *shudder*)
Road Runner- I just kept waiting for the coyote to give up. Dumb dog! :/
G-Force - wish they still showed this
Robotech- last one I would consider as in my childhood and I still like this one

Now, I like Rolie Polie Olie. The music reminds me of cartoons from the 30's-40's, but the images are all CGI. I like the contrast.

There's still half a dozen eps I haven't seen yet, including that last one. It used to be more, but, thank you internet. I always liked the Sick, Sad World puns ("a liver runs through it!") and, being a Brit, I thought "Depth Takes a Holiday" (with the escapees from Holiday Island) was damn funny.

Right now I love everthing on Cartoon Network except for Scooby Doo. (never liked that show, and I don't know why.) Esspecially Teen Titans, Megas XLR, Clone Wars was awsome, but also Ed Edd and Eddie, Codename: Kids Next Door, and Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends. That last one is probably one of the most original cartoons I have seen in a VERY long time. Craig McCracken is a genius. Fosters and Powerpuff Girls are probably some of the best cartoons of all time. Along with Dexter, Jack, Bugs, along with various others.

I loved the Smurfs and the Littles..and remember the cartoons that use to come on during the weekdays mighty mouse Tom & Jerry Woody Wood Pecker He Man, Ducktales and Heathcliff, I too also loved Strawberry short cake but those were speacials

Does anyone rememer a cartoon about a little boy who had a toy horse and whenever his mother would leave the room the horse would come alive and it had wings..I've been trying to think of the name of that cartoon..I believe it was done by the same people who did the mighty mouse woody W.P and Casper the friendly ghost cartoons Bugs Bunny and friends Captain America, Scooby Doo...or how about Jem...Jem was on of my all time favorites

and for none cartoons, I loved Reading Rainbow and yes..Mr. Rogers's Neighborhood

But my all time favorite Cartoons that I can still watch without hesitation is the Peanuts..I love Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang...watching those cartoons always make me feel happy even as an adult

WNY had a program called Rocketship 7, that aired different cartoons, like Wonder Dog (Under Dog ?) (Neither bird, nor plane , nor even frog. It's just little old me ...) and Fractured Fairy Tales. I REALLY liked Mr Magoo and Bugs Bunny, hated Roadrunner. There was a show called Discovery(year) on Sunday mornings. I remember racing to the TV after church to watch (the earliest I remember) Discovery 65. I liked some of Lost in Space.

Only Storm appearance I can think of was in Pryde of the X-Men, a one-shot TV movie that showed Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat) joining the team (and Wolverine speaking with a Cockney accent, 'cause apparently, all us Canadians are Brits

).

There was a Superman series in the 80s (no, not the cheesy sixties/seventies one --this one had really good animation), though I only ever saw a handful of eps 'cause it didn't air where I was.

I'll just take the opportunity to plug the Thundercats, Voltron, Transformers, Battle of the Planets, and G.I. Joe/G.I. Joe: Reloaded revival comics. They rock, though only Thundercats, BotP, and G.I. Joe tie into the original continuities (Transformers G1 happens in DW's own continuity, which merges the various 80s continuities, and Voltron and Joe: Reloaded are full restarts). They all rock though.

Especially Voltron. You actualy get the full "WTF's going on with this stuff!?!" effect of dealing with newly-discovered alien tech.

Oh, and avoid Thundercats: Hammerhand's Revenge. That one's kinda horrific; the writer just didn't know his stuff. And the crossovers are kinda hit'n'miss.

I particularly remember a series of episodes involving an ad venture on munimula (aluminum spelled backwards). My favorite individual cartoon was a warner brothers cartoo of the 3 little pigs set to Brahams Hungarian Dance No. 5.

When my children were young, we would sit down as a family and watch Robotech. It came on about the time I got home from work. They would record it for me if I didn't get home on time.

I loved the A-Team, Knight Rider, Battlestar Galactica, even Buck Rogers, the Incredible Hulk.

Law And Order is kind of heavy I know. I do remember also watching Quantem Leap as a child now remembering. I had older sisters influencing me on a lot of 80's type stuff that I wouldn't have known about if it wasn't for them.
