Pretty much covers it. Given how much time I now spend in the old recliner, and how I've watched about every episode of anything I ever liked, I've gone back to reading, and am eating about a book a day (thank gawd I found Paperback Swap!). Re-reading an old, favorite author from long ago, murder mysteries in Victorian era England. Back then in London, poor people lived 15-20 to a room in whole swaths of the city, and rich people got very rich off it. People died DAILY right on the streets, if you lost a job, it was the workhouse or begging; if a husband died, wife and children starved to death; medical care was unaffordable. There's much, much more; we forget just how horrible it was. But of course, it was always their fault, for being born poor. Found a new author of murder mysteries in New York, same period; it wasn't quite as bad, but nearly. In New York, crimes (except of the rich) didn't even get SOLVED unless someone offered a "reward" (bribe) to the cops.

First author wrote a second series a generation earlier. Back THEN, forget voting or working at anything but servitude; women didn't even legally OWN ANYTHING. A rich woman could marry a penniless man; he immediately became owner of all her property and funds, could kick her and their children out on the streets to starve if he wanted to, no problem. Husbands raped wives legally, locked them in rooms, girls couldn't even get an education. It's hard to read sometimes, but absolutely infuriating to remember that there are people like Rap and Rush even now (and those who don't want women to vote, etc.) who would happily go back to those times and will fight to the death to keep from moving forward.

We haven't come all that far and still have a long way to go, and they will be pulled, kicking and screaming, every step. Very sad.

I can think of a half dozen essential reasons why this isn't a solution in a modern technological economy. Can you think of even one?

New economies - I wont call them countries, because they were inhabited - tend to be naturally egalitarian, more opportunity. Like the US, we experienced that here too. Prisoners who were transported for life actually won the lottery, if they survived their journey and incarceration, because once free they lived somewhere where it was easier to get ahead than a class riddled establised economy like Great Britain. Of course lots of them ended up back in jail too.

There are those who want to hark back to the frontier economies, and I suppose that's understandable. But in reality those economies relatively quickly divided into the haves and the have nots, largely through mineral wealth or as a result of industrial revolution wealth. In America in particular you see the establishment of the mega wealthy who then started generations born into wealth and power. Not so much a level playing field.

Wars, revolutions and catastrophic events, such as plagues can pull down power structures and create once again an environment where ordinary folk can get ahead, but history show us that power and capital, unchecked will consolidate and entrenched class/economic divisions occur.

Well, in respect to the whole work-or-starve thing...

You could plant some food, IF everygoddamnthinginallthefuckinworld wasn't already owned, locked down, copyrighted, patented, held by a corporation, or what have you - even if they flat stole it to begin with.

There's finding/obtaining uncontaminated seed stock, for starters, and while it is not YET a crime to possess, give Monsanto a little more time with their iron fist around our lawmakers and it will be.

Then there's finding some place to plant them that isn't polluted all to hell by some corporations excesses - not so easy when you need to hide crops to keep them from being destroyed by the local DNR which happens to be Monsanto cronies, one and all... and of course all the best hiding spots, that's where all the corps dumped all the toxins, don't ya know.

Of course, there's also the legal fiction/insanity of land ownership when most of it is just being economically sat on, left to run down into decay because actually having some level of responsibility is impossible for a corporation since they can exercise all the rights of a person, but yet there's no one to soak up the blame...

So, a rotting wreck full of rats - or a field of food ?
But oh no, can't have that, no way, no how, cause if you allow people to cut the chains which anchor them to the corporate tit, they might stop listening... they might stop OBEYING, and cannot have that, can you now ?

Since this low level non violent (so far, thankfully) warfare has been an exercise in futility for the corporate tools given that they've been playing nonstop whack-a-mole and their minions are quite amenable to bribery cause hey, who doesn't like fresh produce...
They have chosen to escalate matters.
