Of course the problem is that capitalism is sorta designed to fuel greed. It's working way too well though. I think they expected a little greed. Our country is to the point where the tip toppyiest rich people in the country have everything and they just want more. Whether it destroys the economy and the whole country or not.

ugh, yes. So does tenure. Some of the WORST teachers I had (that my mother and brother had had before me and warned me about, that's how long they've been there) were on tenure, and even though they were completely useless they couldn't be gotten rid of.

On a sad note, my dog died yesterday :( *RIP Thumpy* was preoccupying me all day because I wasn't there for him. On the up-side of that, at least he's not suffering any more. Poor thing went really down hill really fast in the last few months, and seeing him have so much trouble was harder than getting the news yesterday I think.

Sounds like what happened with our family cat. It was so sad. I was an absolute wreck afterward.

My family lost two dogs when I was a child. We had to give a third one away when we moved. I have never had one since. I live in small apartments and that is not good for an animal that needs to run around.

Talking of car parts. There is an air filter for the heater/air-conditioner for my car. It needs to be replaced about every 50,000 miles. It is cheap but they have to tear up my dashboard. It is the labor involved that is outrageous. I've been told that if my seatbelt goes bad they have to replace the entire seat. It all has to do with the electronics involved. I guess if you fly forward in a crash it signals the airbag to inflate.

Yeah... :\ Mom got me a small stuffed dog (because she's cute like that) to take with me on this trip, so that's making me feel better a little bit lol.
I can't decide if being back home (meaning in my home state) would have been worse or better; I don't know if I'd be more of a wreck or not. It's gonna be so weird because he always *there* ya know? He's the first pet I've had and lost, which I think makes it worse. Thanks for the sympathy Zeek. *hugs for your cat as well*

Seems to be a bad pet week, found out my brother's cat ran away as well O_o

yeah, pets in small apartments don't get along well with the environment lol. It's what's keeping me and the bf from getting a very badly wanted pup.

Yes. I am watching Stargate 1. I never had cable and for years I have watched syndicated portions of the show as it bounced from one local station to another. I never got to watch it from start to finish. Now HULU and Fancast have all ten seasons and I am finally seeing SG1 as I should have long ago. It is even better when the episodes are seen in their proper sequence. So I take in four or five episodes at a time and I am reaching the end of season six. Nice to know the difference between a Rebel Jaffa and a Tokra. I know I spelled those wrong, but my dictionary is lacking and I am to lazy to look it up. If I ever get the nerve to watch this series through again I am going to count how many times Teal'c says "indeed".

I gotta say this country just seems to be getting more and more messed up. I was just reading an article about how some guy was running an illegal payment processing operation for online poker. OK arrest him.

The article described how FedEx got suspicious of the volume of packages he was sending so they opened them to find checks. Wait what!? Then the news article listed the amount and recipient names on the checks. WHAT!?! What did they do to get their names printed in the news and some of their financial info too? Privacy be damned apparently.

I have never shipped FedEx, but wouldn't opening someone's mail be breaking a law. I would think there would be some contract. The U.S. Postal Department could not do it. And then giving out names. I would think FedEx is the one in trouble.

People posted in the comments of the article that FedEx has a clause that says they can open any package they want. Fantastic. Makes me think shipping with the US postal service is the way to go.

Posters are also speculating that the people named in the article might be named in some public court document. That would make some sense I guess. Still seems shady as hell for the article to plaster their names on there when those people had no clue what was going on.

I would guess the opening part isn't protected for FedEx like it is for the USPS. Don't know if privacy laws would impact them either. Kind of like how the police can't search your car or home, but they can search a locker at a gym. At any rate, kind of scary.

For what it's worth it's my understanding that internet poker is only illegal in the state of Washington. There is no federal law against it that I know of. So, I don't think that's what he's being busted for. Especially since that would be the first case ever as far as I've heard.

They call it laundering. It sounds like he is paying people their winnings. And some are professional and get paid to gamble for certain firms. I would call the guy an entrepreneur.

I get the idea that it is not the gambling so much as the large sums being transfered. There seems to be some law about that. I never had that worry.

So, what's key in the definition I'm seeing on wikipedia is money laundering is trying to hide the source or destination of money "obtained from crimes". So, I guess we know what his lawyer is going to try to argue.

Still the part that really gets me is the people who had their names and check values listed in the article. That just doesn't seem right. At least it's some small news outlet and not cnn or the wall street journal or something big.

I agree. Even with charges against this guy they have not charged anyone else and he has not been found guilty of anything. They state gambling over the internet is legal so I am not sure they have a good case. Naming people like that with no charges against them looks like the Feds are over stepping their authority.

Government is stupid.. right now the FAA is having some coniption fit over the fact that an air traffic controller let his kid " call" the flights. You can clearly tell that the dad is telling the kid what to say so an adult is actually doing the air traffic control,they just let this little kid say the words. The pilots had no problem with it and nothing bad happened, but the FAA is freaking out...

But could you imagine the SNAFU if something coincidentally happened? Holy hell, the liability on that one is frightening. I think it's stupid that there's this huge uproar, but everyone is so scared of liability, I understand it.

I read about that. People are nuts. It sounds like 2 people were standing over the kid's shoulders who could step in at any time and correct a mistake. It's not like clearing a flight to take off is an instantaneous disaster. I'm sure there's still plenty of time to grab the mic and yell not to proceed. Bah

And as the article says the courts seem to believe that only sports betting is covered under that law. The most annoying part is that the department of justice knows that. So, they tip toe very carefully around doing anything that would lead to a court case that would officially set precedent once and for all that pther online gambling is legal. They're more than happy to use strong arm tactics to try to intimidate though.

Oh and there's a state law in Washington making all online gambling illegal.

If that's not enough there's a bill being discussed right now to pass online gambling licensing regulations. What would be the point of that if the sites are illegal to begin with?

Bah I feel like I got us side tracked on a big old government rant. Not that it's bad necessarily.

Let's see...how about a lighter ponder. What upcoming movie release are you most looking forward to?

I would say Iron Man 2, but I've got the sneaking suspicion that it's going to suck. I think it's coming down with the Spiderman 3 syndrome of shoving way too much into one movie. They've got at least 2 main villain from what I hear. I'd venture they have a third as well. I'm of the opinion that super hero movies are better when they focus on just one villain. Really flesh out the villain's character and how they conflict with the hero.

So...I'm going to go with Cabin in the Woods. A Joss movie on the big screen is enough to get me excited. And since it's just a horror movie I can't imagine the budget was too extraordinary. So, it should have a relatively easy time making a profit. So, good plot + good reputation for Joss = Zeek happy. At least that's what I'm hoping comes from it.

I want to know why Hollywood feels the need to rush things, and cram shit into as small a package as possible. So many movies would have been made better if production wasn't RUSHED. I know it costs more, but if it prevents the movie from flopping at the box office, I think it's worth it.

Too bad Cabin in the Woods isn't coming out until January @_@ *dies*

I haven't been to the movies in a loooooooooooooong time, so I don't really know too much about what is coming out to make a decision on what movies I'm looking forward to :\ (if any)

On thing I'm always wondering is why don't they film stuff back to back? Like with Spiderman they knew the sequels were going to be box office gold. So, just film two movies back to make and release them over the next three years. That gives the actors time to do some other stuff then bring them in and film a couple more.

Heck Lord of the Rings filmed all three at once, right? That was a cash cow. Why not learn from them?

We were talking about remakes in class the other day XD I have a couple of youngin's in my class who haven't seen any movies with a release date prior to like 1993. It hurts my heart. The Producers, Real Genius, Kelly's Heroes, name the movie name the decade, they were like "what's that?"

I didn't really like Groundhog Day...or What About Bob? I find them slightly funnier years later. Stripes was a favorite of mine when I was a teenager, though.

I'm gobsmacked when the young folk look all blank and clueless when I mention Ferris Bueller. What's the world coming to?

As for recent or upcoming movies? Don't really know much of what is out there. I still haven't seen Avatar and probably won't. I just watched Blood Diamond the other night and was like 'this should be nominated for an Oscar.' Did a little looking...it was...in 2007. :D

I never actually saw the movie. I caught part of the end on cable once and saw some chick saying "I'll never let go" to Leo who was in icy water and she was floating on a board or something. I saw it once in the theater when it came out. Unfortunately one of the girls I saw it with started crying as soon as the thing hit the iceberg and those of you who saw it know that's pretty much just the half way mark...

The other girls behind us laughed at her, the other girl (my friend, cry miss cryer pants was not my friend in fact I didn't really like her) kept giving them evil glares.

That is my experience with Titanic.

I admit I used to be a teeny bopper and saw it for Leo.

My how things have changed. But at least I got it out of my system!

We saw it in the theater when I was nine. I have yet to rationalize the *why* as it was dramatic, inevitably depressing, and I was bored to tears (I'm not a huge fan of dramas).

The one laugh I got out of the experience was when we were getting our seats before lights down and dad announced to half the theater "The boat sinks." One guy a couple of rows down turned around and deadpanned "Aw, come on, you RUINED it!"

There a dozens of films that are about the sinking or make it part of the film. The first I remember about the sinking is "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" with Debbie Reynolds. A lot more entertaining.

Okay, I kinda liked the movie leading up to the realization that the ship is done for. It is honestly a good period piece that warps and breaks the riveted steel sheets of history a bit.

I love Sharpes Rifles. there is no way the show is historically accurate. But it is a fun period piece with violence and adventure and romance.

I swear this company should just give up. Back when I was hired they had "morale events". Each department or a group of departments had a budget to do small stuff like go bowling for an afternoon.

That budget has been shrinking and shrinking. From what I hear it's zero these days. Which sure seems to be true, because we just got an email for a morale event. Join us for a moive and get together. Pay for your own movie ticket and then go across the street to a restaurant where you can pay for whatever you want. So....you made the plans and that's it? Wonderful. OK I'll give them a little credit for it being planned for a Friday at 2:30. So at least we can get away from the office.

Anyway to convert this to a ponder do you guys think half assed things like this are actually worse than nothing at all? Personally I do. To me they're just pointing a big neon sign at the fact that morale isn't worth anything to them. I guess I never expected morale events in the first place, but when you start out paying for them you set a precedent.

Plus there's no way I'd pay to see this movie. "How to train your dragon"? I had to go to imdb to even find out what it was. Kind of annoying that they choose an animated movie just to be as safe as possible. This isn't a family event. We're all adults. How about an adult movie? Kids movie = No thanks.

I don't really have a problem with events like that for work. I mean whats the difference between going out with your work friends after work to a movie and dinner like what you described?

Plus anytime my old work did a "gathering" thing it was never "out" it was always in a conference room with food stuffs. But it was still at work. I think it would be sort of fun to see how people are outside the office.

And while I have no plans to see "How To Train Your Dragon" there are a bunch of kid movies I liked that I saw at the theaters like "Monsters vs Aliens" and I wanted to see the re-release of "Toy Story" in 3D.

I of course am talking about jobs where I actually liked the people I work with. Maybe if I didn't I'd feel differently?

I agree with you, Zeek. If precedent was company-paid fun...it should remain company paid fun. If economic times means the company can't pay anymore, they should acknowledge that. A memo (did you get the memo?) stating that while the company can no longer financially sponsor these morale events, they are still encouraged is a great idea and would alleviate some of the bitterness.

My company did something similar a number of years back, abolishing the company picnic. Now, this was before the current financial climate and we were told that the money set aside for the picnic would be distributed in different way. Well, it was the first year but hasn't been in successive years. Like many companies, they pocket the savings without passing it on (yes...I'm a little bitter that I run what was a four person department with two people and I didn't get a raise. I'm savings them tens of thousands a year, but nothing has gotten passed along.)

BTW, I like the animated movies...but would never pay to see one in the theater. Ever. They just aren't my cop 'o' tea...'course I do like Titanic. ;)

Them choosing the movie for us is the first issue. The fact that I work with a bunch of socially awkward nerds is another issue. Now I'm not saying I'm some social dynamo either, but I wouldn't choose to be in a group of friends consisting just of people like me.

Basically it smacks of "We need to do a team building exercise. What's the cheapest idea we can come up with?"

I like some animated movies, but I need to be in the right mood in the first place. If I'm already in a bad mood then their cheery outlook on everything is just going to make me boil with zeekrage.

I'm betting that this one person I know was a part of the planning team for this. I'm debating whether I want to run into her sometime soon so I can play dumb and rip on the idea with her or if I don't want to run into her cause it might hurt her feelings. I'd hope she'd end up saying "yeah unfortunately we've got no money and were told we had to plan something...I was on the team and that's really the best we could come up with. I'd like to say I could then add some constructive criticism, but the best I can come up with is "if the movie isn't your cup of tea then just take the afternoon off". I'm sure they don't want an empty theater though.

My boss does a work at home today thing for us and it really makes us willing to put up with a lot

Pretty much the same as you...apparently. I actually had a harder time with the change yesterday. I woke up and old 7am, new 8, but wanted to sleep in. When I woke up again at old 9, new 10, I felt frantic and rushed. I didn't get to the barn until new 11, which is really late and makes me feel the pressure. I like to be on my way home by 2 (old or new) but taking care of both horses is a 5 hour undertaking. Blech. The day was over SOOOOOO fast. I ate dinner at like 8:30.

I eat "meals" on Sat and Sunday night...if you can call them that. Those are my big cheat nights when I get to eat the crap I won't let myself have during the week. I had Taco Bell last night...at 8:30.

On a sad note, one of my favorite cheat spots that has amazing tri-tip nachos, burned down about 2 weeks ago. I drive by its charred hollow shell and

for the fish that lived in the GINORMOUS fish tank (walls were about 1" thick...that's how huge it was). You can see the remains of the tank and just know those little suckers went out in a blaze of not-quite glory.
