During a recent attack on Kyiv, Ukrainian air defense forces shot down nine Russian Kh-22 missiles. Prior to this, throughout the entire period of the full-scale war, air defense had managed to intercept only three such missiles out of more than 400 launched, according to an interview with Colonel Yurii Ihnat, head of the Communications Department of the Ukrainian Air Force Command.
According to him, during the attack on the capital, Russian forces used as many as 12 Kh-22 missiles. Each carries a warhead weighing about 1 ton, making such strikes particularly dangerous.
Ihnat emphasized that nine of these missiles were shot down.
"This is an unprecedented case that truly deserves attention and gratitude to our warriors who intercepted these missiles. Incidentally, before this case, out of more than 400 such missiles launched over the entire period, only three had been intercepted," he said.

Starlink is not the only system the Russians are using to control some of their drones. They are also hijacking local mobile networks by using Ukrainian SIM cards in their drones.
Adding functional SIM cards allows Russian drones to connect to Ukrainian (and other countries') data networks.
These trackers are able to send information back to Russia through these networks, possibly employing Telegram bots for this purpose, according to Ukrainian engineers.
James said that these systems are even more useful than Starlink, once a Russian drone is close enough to its target to initiate its terminal guidance phase. And it is why phone companies must also crack down on data accounts that are being used in this way.
“Vodafone, Kyivstar, Lifecell, they need to get their shit in a bag and start with these mobile accounts’ IMEI numbers,” he said. “They should be able to track these SIMs as they move across the country.”
“It’s not that hard. You could code up an automated system that allows you to track that stuff quickly,” and integrate it with Delta. “I totally blame the cell companies for allowing this to happen.”
Starlink doesn’t work on the territory of Russia but does work in Ukraine.
Ukraine’s military insiders believe that Russia is getting the terminals and other hardware through its many shell companies registered in other countries, such as the United Arab Emirates. Russia uses this method to get many of the components that go into its weapons.
Asked if there was a practical upper limit on these acquisitions, James, an American engineer and head of the Azov International Battalion’s fiber-optics laboratory, said it’s hard to tell: “I know that Starlink is chunking out terminals as fast as they can… so I don’t see a limit. These devices are incredibly easy to produce.”
But the hardware is only one part of the equation. Starlink users also need to have accounts. For Russia, these are also likely to be registered in other countries. These accounts are all in a database. This informs Fedorov’s solution of blocking all unregistered accounts.

Trump Helps Putin Kill Ukrainians: A Case Study

What happened last night in Ukraine was so egregious and terrible that I thought it deserved a special note. The Russians launched what was arguably their largest missile/drone attack of the war, aiming to destroy as much of the Ukrainian heating and power generation system as possible.
The number of missiles and drones that the Russians used is still being counted, but it was massive, particularly in terms of the very difficult to intercept ballistic and cruise missiles. Here is how President Zelensky described the system.
"Today, Russia carried out a record strike in terms of the use of ballistic missiles. There were 28 cruise missiles, as well as 43 missiles of various types that approach their targets along a ballistic trajectory and can be intercepted only by Patriot systems."
Here is a map that the Ukrainians released of the attack, showing that the major cities in the east of the country were basically blanketed in missiles and drones.
According to the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the attack hit Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa and at least three other cities.
The temperature in Ukraine is below -20°C (-4°F). Overnight, Russia attacked with 450 drones and over 60 missiles, including ballistic ones.
Primary targets: energy and residential houses in Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Sumy, Odesa, and other regions.
Putin waited for the temperatures to drop and stockpiled drones and missiles to continue his genocidal attacks against the Ukrainian people.
Neither anticipated diplomatic efforts in Abu Dhabi this week nor his promises to the United States kept him from continuing terror against ordinary people in the harshest winter.
We are dealing with terrorists who must be forced to stop violence.
Sybiha’s reference to the temperature was no accident. This attack was carefully planned to happen during the coldest stretch of the winter — indeed the coldest stretch of the last few years. Ukraine is freezing now, far worse than it was when I was there in early January. According to the BBC Weather forecast, Kyiv will not be above freezing at any time in the coming weeks. They have a forecast up for the next 14 days, and it's all below freezing — often in the teens.
So this attack was a cruel and calculated war crime, designed to freeze and kill Ukrainians with maximum effectiveness.
It was also an attack that was aided by the President of the USA. How you say? Well, a few hours before the attack, Trump engaged in a deliberate act of disinformation, designed to fool people. In an afternoon press conference from the Oval Office, Trump said that Putin not only would not attack Ukrainian energy/heating that night, but had promised not to do so for the next week. Here is the exact quote.
"I did call up President Putin and he's agreed -- they have the same cold wave that we do, maybe different because it's pretty far away, but it's the equivalent. And Ukraine is a very cold country, it's much colder than us. It's colder than, on average, Canada or colder. I asked him if he wouldn't shoot for a period of one week and he's agreed to do it."
I’m sure the better natured of you will say that Trump was misled by crafty Vlad. If that makes you feel better, so be it. I do not buy it. If Trump had been deliberately misled and made a fool of, then we should have an immediate response by the US government. The President of the US was turned into a tool of Russian disinformation.
Get those sanctions on Russia going, restart military aid to Ukraine, something.

Russia’s military expenditure in recent years has been far higher than the figures listed in its official defense budget, according to an analysis by Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND).
The agency estimates that real spending has exceeded declared levels by as much as 66%.
The intelligence service estimates that Russia spent around $296 billion on its military in 2025. That figure would represent roughly half of total state spending and about 10% of the country’s gross domestic product. Military spending accounted for about 6% of GDP in 2022, rising to 6.7% in 2023 and 8.5% in 2024.

This week we witnessed three extraordinary events which when you put them altogether show a very worrying pattern. Indeed, linking the three of them might be the only way that they all make sense together.
First, the President of the United States of America, a narcissist of the highest order in charge of the most powerful country in the world, was publicly and richly humiliated. Donald Trump was toyed with by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and used to pass on fake news about the Russians agreeing not to attack Ukrainian heating and power generation. Having used Trump to spread the lie as far as they could, the Russians then launched arguably their largest attack on exactly the kinds of Ukrainian heating and power generation targets that Trump said Putin had promised to spare. In other words, the Russians used Trump, willingly or unwillingly, as a patsy in the most public and flagrant manner.
Second, having been humiliated in the most extreme way, and with his most devoted supporters now begging him to get tough with the Russians (see Lindsey Graham and the New York Post), Trump turned around and defended Putin, the source of his humiliation. Not even bothering to act upset, his normal behavior when Putin humiliates him, Trump said that actually the Russian deadline for halting such attacks had just ended! It was therefore ok for the Russians to do exactly what he, the President of the USA, had said that they would not do hours earlier. In an extraordinary turn of phrase, Trump said that his humiliator, Putin, had “kept his word” on the attacks.
Third, another batch of millions of documents from the Jeffrey Epstein files was released and they made a very strong case that Epstein was closely linked to elements in Russian intelligence. There were trips, emails, and other assorted hints that Epstein was associated with and even coordinated activities with members of the Russian intelligence service. The evidence was strong enough that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a man not prone to histrionics or overstatement, said that the Poles were investigating whether Epstein had been a Russian agent. Tusk’s exact words in a government meeting were:
“There is increasing evidence and commentary in the global media suggesting that this unprecedented scandal may have been co-organized by Russian intelligence services.”
In some ways it was like watching the pieces of a puzzle fall progressively into place. The great mystery of Donald Trump’s behavior has been why he, one of the most famous narcissists in world history, reacts aggressively with extreme anger at any slight or insult, except those given by Vladimir Putin. Usually not supporting or praising Trump makes the president lash out with bitterness. When the Indian government refused to support Trump’s lie that he brought peace between them and the Pakistanis, Trump went ballistic and dramatically increased tariffs on Indian products in retaliation.
On the other hand, when it comes to Russia, Trump accepts humiliation after humiliation and still does whatever is in the best interests of Vladimir Putin. In May, I put this piece together arguing that Trump was acting exactly as a Russian agent of influence would be expected to act. I have just taken it out of paywall for anyone to read.

The US Air Force has successfully tested the low-cost Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM) cruise missile being developed for Ukraine.
According to the Militarniy news outlet, citing official US Air Force materials, the Jan. 21, 2026 test was at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. The project team met all key objectives, including confirming the full functionality of the missile’s warhead.

One notable aspect of the program is its rapid pace: less than 16 months passed between the signing of the first contract and the live test. Speed was a priority in developing a missile designed to be affordable, mass-producible, and low-cost.
The successful trial marked another step toward serial production.
The US Air Force Armaments Working Group reported that production of ERAM missiles for Ukraine began in spring 2025, with the first batch of 840 units scheduled for delivery in October 2026.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has also informed Congress that the missiles can be launched from both US-made F-16 fighters and Soviet-era MiG-29 aircraft.
ERAM missiles are being produced by two companies: Virginia-based CoAspire and California-based Zone 5 Technologies.
CoAspire’s version, known as the Rapidly Adaptable Affordable Cruise Missile (RAACM), weighs about 500 pounds (roughly 250 kilograms) and carries a combined penetrating and high-explosive warhead. It is designed with a multi-mode fuse and can be aircraft-mounted, reaching subsonic speeds of up to 200 meters (656 feet) per second.
Technical specifications for Zone 5’s variant, dubbed Rusty Dagger, have not been disclosed, though its capabilities are expected to be similar.
The Pentagon expects production to reach around 1,000 ERAM missiles over two years – roughly 42 units per month.
As per Militarniy, US military officials said Washington is accelerating several programs aimed at producing inexpensive cruise missiles, either by extending the range of existing systems or developing entirely new designs using alternative materials and technologies.
Under the Enterprise Test Vehicle (ETV) program, the US ultimately aims to produce millions of such munitions.
In 2024, five defense companies - Anduril Industries, IS4S, Leidos/Dynetics, and Zone 5 - began designing and testing low-cost cruise missile prototypes with support from the Defense Innovation Agency and the Air Force Lifecycle Management Center.
In late August 2025, the Trump administration approved a potential $825 million arms sale to Ukraine, pending congressional approval.
The package includes 3,350 ERAM missiles and related equipment, funded through the Jump Start program by Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands, with additional support from US Foreign Military Financing.
The ERAM - an air-launched “mini cruise missile” with a reported range of up to 400 kilometers - is intended to give Ukraine a low-cost, high-volume long-range strike capability, allowing Ukrainian forces to hit military assets and infrastructure deep behind enemy lines.
The package also includes mission-planning software, spare parts, support equipment, and technical assistance.

Active-duty Russian service members continue to visit schools in occupied Ukraine and engage with children and youth on the topic of military service. Russian occupation administrations are intensifying efforts to formalize the militarization of schools in occupied Ukraine in line with the mandatory Russian “Fundamentals of Security and Protection of the Motherland” (OBZR) curriculum. Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) Head Denis Pushilin reported on January 28 that the Donetsk Oblast occupation government plans to equip classrooms in 513 schools in occupied Donetsk Oblast with equipment for OBZR courses.[17] Sevastopol occupation governor Mikhail Razvozhaev reported on February 2 that the Crimea occupation administration is equipping schools for OZBR courses under a grant from the Russian “Youth and Children” national project.[18] Razvozhaev specified that Sevastopol School No.39 will receive tactical simulators, sets and models for “defense fundamentals,” military-patriotic education materials, modern personal protective equipment, and first aid training equipment. Razvozhaev also noted that a Russian soldier who fought against Ukraine is a teacher at School No.39 and is sharing his experiences with schoolchildren. OBZR intends to codify the increasingly military-patriotic slant of the Russian education system since 2022, and Russian authorities have been imposing it on the school system in occupied Ukraine to accomplish the same effect.[19] Drone assembly and operation, for example, are now a required part of mandatory OBZR courses.[20] OBZR seeks to normalize the forced militarization of society in occupied Ukraine while also preparing Ukrainian children for eventual service in the Russian military or the Russian industrial base.[21]

Ukrainian Defense Ministry adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov, known by the call sign Flash, said Russian forces are trying to find ways to reactivate Starlink terminals that were recently blocked for their use on Feb. 7.
“Of course, the enemy is looking for ways to reactivate Starlink. They share ideas in their groups, and then those posts circulate in our groups. All of their ideas are trivial: send someone to an administrative service center for money, use a fictitious LLC, remove Starlink from a captured drone, and so on,” Beskrestnov wrote on his Telegram channel.
He said Ukrainian authorities were aware of these risks and had developed ways to counter them.
“All of these Starlink terminals will be blocked — we know how. As for those who want to try to make ‘easy money’ for the enemy, they face imprisonment, and not a short one. This is not setting a car on fire and running away. This is going to an administrative service center and effectively documenting your crime for the court. So my advice to traitors is: don’t even try,” the defense minister’s adviser added.
Launch of Starlink terminal verification in Ukraine and its impact on invaders
On Feb. 2, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced the launch of Starlink terminal verification in Ukraine. He said that only verified and registered terminals will operate in the country, while all others will be disconnected to counter the use of Starlink by Russian forces.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk agreed to help Ukraine address the issue.
On Feb. 5, Defense Ministry technology adviser Serhiy “Flash” Beskrestnov said Russian troops halted assaults in many sections of the front line due to the mass shutdown of Starlink satellite communications, calling the situation a “catastrophe” for the enemy.

So what does the cutoff mean for Russia’s frontline units?
As noted above, both armies primarily use satellite connectivity to transmit live drone footage to commanders. This enables them to direct small assault squads and receive real-time intelligence from the field.
Satellite links also help manage logistics under challenging conditions, where enemy drones monitor supply routes many kilometers behind the front lines. Without satellite channels to transmit heavy data loads, supplying frontline troops would be even more difficult.
However, there are other high-speed Internet options. Before Starlink, Russian command posts (especially those located near Ukrainian territories occupied back in 2014–2015) used civilian fiber-optic networks and extended them to frontline positions. They’ve also created radio repeater networks to extend communication ranges. Both sides use relay drones to extend UAV ranges.
These communications systems are, of course, far less convenient and more labor-intensive than commercial satellite networks.
Are there any Starlink alternatives for Russia?
There are only a few companies in the world that provide high-speed satellite Internet with low signal lag. Roughly a dozen others are at various stages of building their own networks, including Russia’s Starlink alternative, Rassvet (“Dawn”).
However, the Russian project is far behind. Although it was expected to be online by 2027, production of the low-orbit satellites for the constellation hasn’t started yet. Russia’s existing civilian and military satellites are also unsuitable as alternatives to Starlink due to low Internet speeds, high signal latency, and insufficient bandwidth.
From a political perspective, China’s Starlink competitors may appear to be a viable alternative for the Russian military (even if their devices are smuggled into the country). However, even the country’s top project, the Shanghai-based “Thousand Sails” (Qianfan) network, has encountered problems. Launch delays in 2025 mean it’s unlikely to provide global coverage by 2027, as planned.

Ukrainian specialists are getting an unexpected look inside the technology used against them. What they are finding, they say, reveals sharp differences in quality and durability. The assessments come from engineers who are repairing captured and damaged drone components for reuse.
Repairing for the front
The Ukrainian ZAMPOTECH Foundation is running a project aimed at supporting the armed forces by restoring engines recovered from Russian Shahed and Geran drones.
According to the foundation, refurbishing a single operational engine takes about two weeks and typically requires usable parts taken from three or four damaged units. The repaired engines are then donated for Ukrainian military use.
Quality compared
ZAMPOTECH engineers say most Shahed and Geran drones are powered by MD550 four-cylinder piston engines, allowing the aircraft to reach speeds of around 185 km/h.
Based on their analysis, engines assembled in Iran are the most durable and reliable. Russian- and Chinese-made replacements, however, perform significantly worse.
“The Russian engine operates for a maximum of four to five hours, which is enough for one or two flights. Only the Chinese engine has worse performance, flying for about one and a half to two hours before it completely seizes up,” ZAMPOTECH said in a statement.
Simplified design
According to the Ukrainian engineers, the inferior performance suggests that Russian manufacturers simplified the original Iranian design to cut costs and speed up production.
ZAMPOTECH’s analysis found that several components had been removed from Russian-made versions of the engine, including the starter motor and the heavy flywheel, reducing durability and operational lifespan.
The foundation says these changes make the engines far less reliable under combat conditions.
From Shahed to Geran
Russia initially relied exclusively on Iranian-made Shahed drones, which it began stockpiling as early as 2021, according to a Bloomberg report cited in the article.
Over time, Moscow acquired production technologies and began manufacturing its own versions, known as Geran drones, at facilities in the Russian region of Tatarstan.
Although Iran sold Russia a license to produce the drones, journalist Lukasz Michalik notes that Tehran is not responsible for subsequent design changes introduced by Russian manufacturers.

As the war in Ukraine grinds on, senior figures in Russia’s Orthodox Church are offering spiritual explanations for why peace remains elusive.

A senior cleric of the Russian Orthodox Church has claimed that interest in occult practices, “evil spirits” and abortions are preventing an end to the war in Ukraine, according to The Moscow Times.
Bishop Pitirim (Tvorogov), head of the Skopin Diocese, said these phenomena have provoked divine anger and contributed to the continuation of the conflict.
“In a country at war, a huge number of people turn to evil spirits for help,” Pitirim was quoted as saying.
Rise of the occult
According to the bishop, Russia has seen a sharp increase in what he described as occult activity.
He claimed that by 2024, “the number of clairvoyants, sorcerers, magicians, tarot readers, numerologists and fortune tellers will have tripled.”
Pitirim said demand for “occult objects” would continue to grow in 2025, suggesting that spiritual practices outside Orthodox Christianity have become increasingly widespread during wartime.
In his view, this shift has undermined the possibility of peace.
Abortion and morality
The bishop also placed responsibility on women who choose to have abortions, arguing that such decisions contribute to what he described as a broader moral collapse.
“It is not God’s will that peace be concluded in this way, because of the large number of sorcerers who have emerged and the large number of abortions, especially in recent times,” Pitirim said.
He added that Russians, in his assessment, had begun living “in a deeply immoral way.”
A familiar narrative
This is not the first time representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church have linked the war in Ukraine to moral failings.
The Moscow Times noted that Archimandrite Andrei Tkachev, a cleric known for his pro-war views, has previously argued that Russians were “unworthy of peace and happiness” because of what he described as moral degradation.
“Because of depravity, wars arise. And we will not have peace until we repent,” Tkachev said on an earlier occasion.
Church and war rhetoric
In January, the Russian Orthodox Church organized a nationwide prayer campaign aimed at discouraging abortions.
One prayer urged believers to ask that “those possessed by thoughts of infanticide may come to their senses and be freed from this senseless darkness.”
That same month, President Vladimir Putin told Orthodox believers that Russian troops were carrying out a “holy mission” in Ukraine, saying the invasion was taking place “at the behest of God.”

Ukraine imported $1.7 billion worth of gas-fired power plant equipment over four years of full-scale war—enough, on paper, for 1.6 gigawatts of new generation capacity. By January 2026, only 500–600 megawatts actually works, according to Ekonomichna Pravda’s customs data analysis. And the state built barely any of it.
“Zelenskyy’s gigawatt”—as Ukrainians dubbed the president’s December 2023 pledge to build 1,000 MW of new maneuverable generation by winter—has become a measure of how far political promises travel before they hit the ground. That original target later grew to four gigawatts “in the coming years.”
The state’s own project portal lists 144 planned projects totaling 3.68 GW, with a budget of 143 billion hryvnia ($3.3 billion). Almost none are finished.
Former Ukrenergo chairman Volodymyr Kudrytskyi—who synchronized Ukraine’s grid with Europe in the first weeks of the invasion and was dismissed in September 2024 in what critics called political retaliation—told Texty that government efforts and state companies delivered just 10–15% of the capacity that came online in 2025. Private businesses built the rest—roughly 85–90% of what actually generates electricity today.
The installation bottleneck
The customs data tells a story of massive private-sector investment. Cogeneration equipment imports surged from $22 million in 2021 to an estimated $940 million in 2025—a 43-fold increase. Transformers, diesel generators, and gas-fired mini power plants flooded into the country.

But importing a power plant and connecting it to the grid are different things. Equipment can sit in warehouses for months awaiting installation, certification, and grid connection. The ministry’s figure is the highest among competing government capacity estimates. Vice Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba puts the number at 570 MW. The State Energy Efficiency Agency says about 500 MW.
The discrepancy matters: the ministry that claims the most is the same one engulfed in the Energoatom corruption scandal—an affair that toppled two ministers, forced the resignation of presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak in late November 2025, and triggered Zelenskyy’s largest wartime government reshuffle.

Recognizing it could not build four gigawatts alone, the government launched a competition inviting private companies to construct gas-fired power plants of 5–80 MW each. Ukrenergo would compensate capital costs—up to €855,000 per megawatt—over ten years.
The first round targeted 700 MW. In April 2025, winners were announced for over 300 MW. Then, the commission stopped meeting. Most proposals were rejected. In December, the commission’s chairman, Yurii Sheik, was detained on corruption charges related to a scheme at Energoatom.

Russians are seeking a replacement for blocked Starlink systems and are forcing families of prisoners of war to register terminals in their own names, Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for Treatment of Prisoners of War said in a statement.
The Defense Ministry of Ukraine, in cooperation with SpaceX, managed to disable illegal Starlink terminals that Russians used to control kamikaze drones.
"Seeking a way out of the difficult situation they found themselves in, occupiers turned attention to families of prisoners of war. Cases of threats and demands to officially register Starlink terminals in their own names have been recorded. This equipment is then supposed to be used against Ukraine and Ukrainians," the statement said.
Coordination Headquarters for Treatment of Prisoners of War stressed that Russians are exploiting the vulnerability of POW families, for whom they are a one-time resource. In addition, official registration of the enemy terminal makes it possible to identify the person who did it.
"If a terminal is used to control drones that destroy infrastructure and take lives, the fact of registering a terminal by a Ukrainian citizen is grounds for criminal liability," the statement said.
It recently became known that Russia is increasingly using Starlink on drones. This allowed them to bypass Ukrainian air defense and electronic warfare systems.
After that, Ukraine's Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said he promptly contacted SpaceX to resolve this issue.
Later, the Ministry of Digital Transformation reported that Ukraine is introducing a whitelist. It refers to a list of verified Starlink terminals that would work stably for every Ukrainian user, but not for the enemy.

If you’ve never seen a laser shoot an aircraft out of the sky, the experience can be unsettling. The weapon fits comfortably into the trunk of a car. It makes no noise and emits no light, not even the glowing red beam that’s so familiar from the movies. When a team of Ukrainian soldiers and engineers took me to see their prototype the other day, it seemed easy to use. Almost too easy.
The operator set up the laser cannon on the roof of his pickup truck in the middle of an empty field. It resembles a hobbyist’s telescope with some cameras affixed to the sides. For target practice, one of the engineers launched a small drone, and it flew a few hundred yards away from us, hovering in the gauzy winter sky. The laser swiveled as its cameras followed the target. The operator shouted, “Fire!” Within seconds, the drone began to burn as if struck by invisible lightning, then fell to the ground in a fiery arc.
The Ukrainian model, known as the Sunray, is not the world’s first laser weapon system. The U.S. Navy has one called Helios, which Lockheed Martin developed as part of a $150 million contract signed in 2018. Four years later, the first Helios laser was installed on a U.S. destroyer to defend against enemy drones. The creators of the Sunray, whose existence has not been previously reported, told me they built their laser in about two years for a few million dollars, and they expect to sell it for a few hundred thousand dollars.
Pavlo Yelizarov, the newly appointed commander of Ukraine’s air-defense forces, sees this price differential as a result of the war with Russia. “Many American companies are driven by money,” he told me last month at his office in Kyiv. “For them, it’s a job. They do it. They get paid. We have another component at play: the need to survive. That’s why we are moving faster.”
In recent months, President Volodymyr Zelensky has prioritized the push to deploy Ukraine’s own air defenses as the United States and Europe have failed to provide enough of them. A lot of U.S. weapons are being diverted to the Middle East, where the U.S. needs them for both a possible strike on Iran and defense against retaliatory strikes from Iranian drones and rockets. The Europeans, for their part, are loath to give Ukraine any more of the weapons they might one day need to guard their own people from Russian drones.
The Ukrainian response has been a race to build a bootstrapped version of the Iron Dome, Israel’s short-range air-defense system, which is thought to be the most effective in the world. (Lockheed Martin is now at work on a comparable system for the United States, which President Trump has dubbed the “Golden Dome.”) But the task of shooting projectiles out of the sky—or, as ballistic-missile defense is often described, “hitting a bullet with a bullet”—has bedeviled engineers at least since the invention of ballistic missiles during World War II. Even in the case of Israel, which has nearly 30 times less territory than Ukraine, the construction of an effective air-defense shield took about four years. A single battery of Iron Dome interceptors cost as much as $100 million in 2012.
Ukraine’s arms manufacturers have tried for several years to get the same results on a far tighter budget, and a handful of them took me to see their inventions last week. These include a 3-D-printed interceptor drone, a carbon-fiber clone of Russia’s best air-defense rocket, wheeled robots armed with chain-gun turrets, and more exotic weapons like the Sunray. Taken together, the trajectory of their development suggests that Ukraine may soon be able to neutralize one of the biggest threats to its security: the swarms of Russian drones that continue to terrorize its civilians and destroy its infrastructure.

Europe increased its military aid to Ukraine by 67% in 2025, effectively replacing support from the US, which collapsed by 99%, according to the updated data from the Ukraine Support Tracker and an analytical paper, Kiel Policy Brief, by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.
From the US there was only one "symbolic" military support package worth approximately €0.4 billion, and no new major financial or humanitarian commitments were recorded.

Russia may have lost about twice as many soldiers in Ukraine in December 2025 as the Soviet Union lost during the Soviet-Afghan War, a former British intelligence chief said on Feb. 10.
Sir Richard Moore, the former MI6 chief, gave an interview on Sky News' on the World podcast with journalist Yalda Hakim on Feb. 10, where he said that about 30,000 Russians were killed in Ukraine in December, describing the number as "astonishing."
Moore compared this monthly death toll for Russian soldiers to the casualties in the Soviet-Afghan war, which lasted for 10 years (1979-1989) and resulted in the death of approximately 15,000 Soviet soldiers.
"The losses are terrible, and even the Russians will struggle to replace that level of losses. So, they continue to do appallingly badly on the battlefield," Moore said.
When he left his job in 2025, the former head of MI6 Sir Richard Moore said that he didn't think he’d left the world in a better place than when he was first appointed in 2020.

How documentary film 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin' struggles with the uncomfortable truths of wartime Russia

"I wish I could be as brave as them," says Pavel Talankin, a school videographer in the industrial town of Karabash, speaking of Russians who protested the invasion of Ukraine in its first days. "But I'm not."
The line is not self-pitying so much as diagnostic, and it becomes the foundation of "Mr. Nobody Against Putin," an Academy Award-nominated documentary that offers one of the clearest portraits of how Russian authoritarianism sustains itself not through mass fanaticism, but through routine moral abdication and prioritizing one’s own survival.
After the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the school where Talankin works is methodically repurposed. What was once an educational institution becomes an extension of the state's war machinery. The children are prepared by their teachers — both mentally and physically — for a permanent state of war that awaits them as their destiny.
Talankin, horrified by what is happening, does the only thing he knows how to do: he films it.
The school is required to produce propaganda and upload videos to a government portal. Teachers and students recite prewritten scripts about the glory of the Russian military and the existential threat posed by the so-called "Ukrainian Nazis." But Talankin also begins filming something else: the awkward reality behind the performances, the mechanisms of indoctrination laid bare. He plans to show the world, as he puts it, how his beloved school, its teachers and students, are "sinking into the abyss."
Being the school videographer gives him a kind of institutional camouflage. A camera doesn't register as a threat — at least not right away. It lets him capture not just the pageantry, but the slippages: the strained smiles, the off-script unease, the dawning recognition, among the few who still have a conscience, of what this place is becoming. Still, as he himself notes later on in the documentary, filming becomes an increasingly dangerous act.
The new "patriotic" curriculum begins to take precedence over regular classes, and some of the teachers complain that their students are beginning to fall behind in their regular coursework. The students write letters of support to the Russian soldiers killing Ukrainians. They practice military drills in school hallways. They are taught to throw grenades. Wagner mercenaries visit to lecture the students on how to recognize mines and survive gunshot wounds.
Teachers are made to read scripts prepared by the state. They stumble over phrases like "denazification" and "demilitarization." In one darkly funny scene, Talankin calls a teacher from behind the camera to start over, and implies that her lack of ability to pronounce such words means she herself doesn't understand what "knowledge" she is imparting to the children. The awkwardness is revealing. These are not meant to be lessons. They are loyalty tests — ritualized words meant not to persuade, but to enforce submission.
On the one hand, it shows the world that this is not just Putin’s war. On the other hand, it shows how the fear of the masses enables it.
What matters is not whether people believe it, though. Most of the teachers recognize the absurdity of it all, but they fall silent when Talankin suggests in the teacher's lounge that they just stop implementing the new curriculum. They all know refusal carries professional, social, and even legal consequences. And so they comply. They nod, they read the scripts through uncomfortable laughs and awkward smiles, and they oversee the military drills.

Ukraine’s expert community has known about ways to improve air defense for some time, but the military “tried not to react to these suggestions,” according to Kostyantyn Kryvolap, a former aviation test engineer at the Antonov Design Bureau. His words echo those of a senior master sergeant, who complained of resistance to change among military leaders.
“What I hear the most frustration about, when speaking to supporters of Ukraine, is the use of manned jets… with quite expensive air-to-air missiles to intercept Shaheds,” DeVore said, calling this method “definitely wasteful.”
“There are much cheaper ways of bringing down things like Shaheds than with jets.”
The senior master sergeant, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that insufficiently-prepared troops don’t fully grasp the many nuances of their weapons, which the Russians are able to exploit if given the chance.
He added that teams are often deployed without considering best tactical practices, such as those calling for the creation of overlapping fields of fire. Finally, despite mobility being spelled out in their name, mobile fire teams often find themselves ordered to guard a limited location.
Kryvolap concurred that Russian reconnaissance has been able to map out where these teams are based around major cities. The Russians can use this to their advantage by flying around them.
The manufacture and use of radar systems is tightly controlled by the General Intelligence Directorate (GUR), due to the sensitive data these systems provide. This caution means that there are not enough radar systems to go around for all the air defense teams that might need them. Multiple people who spoke to Euromaidan Press expect that getting the intelligence agencies to disrupt their standard operating procedures will be challenging.

The strategic shift from heavy weapons and maneuver warfare to drone warfare and attrition means Russia's ability to sustain this war improves while Ukrainian devastation increases. Europe's present support has very limited effect on Russian missiles, drones, and guided glide bombs. Europe must fundamentally change its approach. It either engages at a time of its own choosing or accepts Russia escalating at a time of Moscow's choosing.
Russian air power has found a new role. Since 2023, guided glide bomb (KAB) use has surged from tens daily to 200-plus drops per day.
In 2024, Russia dropped around 40,000 guided glide bombs. In 2025, roughly 48,500. If current trends hold, 2026 could see 68,500. Range has grown from 60–80 km to 95–150+ km with jet-assisted variants, letting aircraft release outside many Ukrainian air defense envelopes. Russia's defense intelligence is developing modifications to reach 400 km.
Long-range strike drones: Russia launched nearly five times more in 2025 compared to 2024 (54,500 versus 11,200). Based on the first two months of 2026, the figure could reach a staggering 102,000 this year—of which, at current intercept rates, roughly 16,000 may reach their targets: energy infrastructure, logistical hubs, rail networks, defense plants, residential buildings, schools, and hospitals.
The operational and tactical drone picture is even grimmer. Including medium-range strike, surveillance, and reconnaissance drones, the increase based on early 2026 data is 360%: 276,000 downed drones, meaning roughly 330,000 launched. The actual number of successful Russian strikes will likely be far higher than the conservative 16,000 estimate.

Just over an hour ago, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called for the end of a tolerant, democratic Europe and its break-up into a disparate group of smaller, Trumpist states, and the Europeans in the room gave him a standing ovation. The chair of the event, Wolfgang Ischinger even thanked Rubio for his wonderful “reassurance”. So, it seems that threats to invade Greenland do not matter; the unilateral, imposition of uneven tariffs on Europe never happened. Indeed, even the abandonment of Ukraine and the cozying up to Vladimir Putin was not really dividing the US and Europe.
One speech of questionable value, asking liberal, democratic Europe to agree to its own destruction, and the last 13 months just melt away?

Russia poisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny with a deadly toxin found in Ecuadorian dart frogs while he was in prison, the United Kingdom and European allies have said.
“Collaborative work has confirmed through laboratory testing that the deadly toxin found in the skin of Ecuador dart frogs (epibatidine) was found in samples from Alexei Navalny’s body and highly likely resulted in his death,” the U.K.’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said in a statement on Saturday.
“Only the Russian state had the means, motive and opportunity to deploy this lethal toxin to target Navalny during his imprisonment in a Russian penal colony in Siberia, and we hold it responsible for his death,” it said.
The U.K. worked with Sweden, France, the Netherlands and Germany.
Navalny died in February 2024, after he was transferred to a high-security penal colony above the Arctic Circle, sparking speculation about whether the Kremlin had killed him, which Moscow has repeatedly and vehemently denied.

Over 177,000 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine identified by media investigation

Russian independent media outlet Mediazona, in collaboration with the BBC Russian service, has confirmed the identities of 177,433 Russian military personnel killed in Ukraine as of Feb. 13.
Since the media outlets' last update in early February, the names of 9,291 Russian soldiers have been added to the list of casualties.
The journalists note that the actual figures are likely significantly higher, as their verified information comes from public sources such as obituaries, posts by relatives, regional media reports, and statements from local authorities.
The confirmed death toll now includes over 57,200 volunteers, 21,400 recruited prisoners, and 17,000 mobilized soldiers, according to the media outlets. A total of 6,414 officers have also been confirmed to have been killed.
While Moscow does not disclose its casualty figures at all, President Volodymyr Zelensky told France TV in an interview on Feb. 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed on the battlefield since the start of Russia's full-scale war. Kyiv largely avoided commenting on its losses for the first two years of the full-scale invasion, until Zelensky announced in February 2024 that 31,000 Ukrainian troops had been killed.
Zelensky also told France TV that Russia would continue to incur staggering losses if it attempted to conquer all of eastern Ukraine by force of arms. His comments come amid the latest round of trilateral peace talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S., where the status of Ukraine's eastern Donbas territory remains a major point of contention in negotiations.
Despite the heavy losses, Russia has been able to make marginal advances in Ukraine's front line region as it is able to offset its casualties through fresh contract soldiers. The Ukrainian open-source mapping project DeepState reported that Russian forces occupied 4,336 square kilometers (1,674 square miles) of Ukrainian territory in 2025, accounting for less than 1% of the country
The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces estimates that as of Feb. 13, Russia has lost around 1,250,950 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 22, 2022. The figures do not specify killed or wounded, though the overall consensus is that it includes dead, wounded, missing, and captured.
Mediazona published the complete list of identified casualties for the first time in February, marking three years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. According to the publication, volunteers manually enter and verify each record to prevent duplicate entries in the database.

Is Ukraine Causing More Russian Losses Than Putin Can Replace?
One of the reasons that in my research I try to steer people away from seeing individual battles as decisive (or in many cases even that important) is that history tends to greatly distort their impact.1 Writers, readers, film-makers, etc, like to make battles dramatic as events, not surprisingly, as it makes what happens during them seems that history is in the balance. In reality, individual battles decide very little. They usually cause far fewer losses than one thinks and effect the trajectories of a war only in small ways.
Far more important in understanding the course of a war is to follow longer term trends of losses caused, losses experienced, and new forces/equipment generated. . . .
To go from approximately equal loss/replacement levels to a 25% gap in a short period is striking. It is also worth noting that it happened because the Russians seem to be struggling to attract new recruits. This is not a surprise, as the Russian casualty-heavy way of fighting is not one that is likely to win them many eager new sacrificial lambs the longer the war goes on. In the past they have tried to get around this problem with massive financial incentives, however there are signs now that this enticement is losing its appeal. The Russians are also trying to lure/trick young men from other parts of the world to join their military, but that is probably not a war-winning tactic.
The Russian way of war, which too many brain-dead propagandists like to present as some inexorable steam-roller of suffering that cannot be beaten, is actually not effective as a long-term strategy. It is one of the reasons that the Russian inevitable victory argument, so beloved of Donald Trump and some others, is so wrong-headed. The Russian way of fighting actually contains the seeds of Russian defeat—if Ukraine’s friends want to support Ukraine to take advantage of that fact.
Now this is only two months so we need to be careful. Perhaps recruiting in a terribly cold winter was down for other reasons and will snap back. However if it continues and the Ukrainians are able to raise their monthly total of inflicted losses to 40,000 (I think 50,000 is ambitious so will go for the lower target for now), that will mean that even the small Russian advances should ground to a halt.
Armies tend to get either relatively stronger or relatively weaker. They rarely tread water for long periods. The trajectory over the last two months is that the Russian army could be getting weaker. That is a story of note.

They like the bedtime story: Europe was peacefully humming along in its post-history spa — open borders, cheap energy, NATO as a charity, Russia as a gas station with a flag… and then, one day, the barbarian kicked the door in for no reason at all.
That story is not just dishonest. It’s operational. It’s the propaganda you tell yourself so you can keep the addiction going without ever admitting how self-destructive it is.
Because the truth is uglier and far more incriminating: In Munich, on February 10, 2007, Vladimir Putin stood on the most flattering stage the Atlantic system owns — the Security Conference where Western officials applaud themselves for maintaining “order” and he laid out, to their faces, the skeleton of the coming disaster. He didn’t whisper it in a back channel. He used the microphone to deliver some much needed medicine, however hard it would be for the Empire to swallow.
He even signaled he wasn’t going to play the usual polite theatre — the kind where everyone agrees in public and stabs each other in classified annexes. He said the format allowed him to avoid “pleasant, yet empty diplomatic platitudes.”
And then he did the unforgivable thing, (gasp!) he described the empire as an empire. He named the unipolar intoxication — that post–Cold War hallucination that history had ended, that power had found its final owner, that NATO could expand forever without consequences, that international law was optional for the enforcer class and compulsory for everyone else.
Putin’s core argument was brutally simple: a unipolar model is not only unacceptable, it’s impossible. Not “unfair.” Not rude. Impossible.
(Because in a world with) “one center of authority, one center of force, one center of decision-making” is a world where security becomes privatized — where the strong reserve the right to interpret rules (with exemptions for themselves), and the weak are told to accept it as morality. (And yes, he put it in exactly those terms — one center, one force, one decision — the architecture of domination.)
And when you build that kind of world, everyone else does the only rational thing left: they stop trusting the wall of law to protect them, and they start arming for survival. Putin said it outright: when force becomes the default language, it “stimulates an arms race.”
This is where the Western client media — professionally disenginuous as ever, clipped one or two spicy lines and missed the larger point: Munich 2007 wasn’t “Putin raging.” It was Russia publishing its redlines in front of the class.
And then came the part that should have frozen the room. Putin named it – NATO expansion. Putin didn’t argue it as nostalgia. He argued it as provocation — a deliberate reduction of trust. He asked the question no Western leader ever answers honestly:
“Against whom is this expansion intended?”
And then he drove the blade in: what happened to the assurances made after the Warsaw Pact dissolved? “No one even remembers them.”
That line matters because it goes well beyond grievance — it’s a window into how Russia saw the post–Cold War settlement: not as a partnership, but as a rolling deception. Expand NATO, move offensive infrastructure, then call it “defensive.” Build bases, run exercises, integrate weapons systems, and insist the other side is paranoid for noticing.
Putin’s formulation was clean: NATO expansion “represents a serious provocation that reduces the level of mutual trust.”
Now pause and look at the psychology of the West in that room. They didn’t hear a warning. They heard audacity. They didn’t hear “security dilemma.” They heard “how dare you speak like an equal.” That’s the cultural glitch at the heart of the Atlantic project: it believes its own core lie and cannot process sovereignty in others without treating it as aggression.

Ukraine has a substantial number of surface-to-air missiles of different types. Ukraine also has significant quantities of launchers and radars for the missiles. One of Ukraine's main air defense problems is that the missiles, launchers, and radars don't necessarily match. So many missiles, launchers, and radars go unused.
That's why the new Shershen air defense system is such a big deal. The system, under development by the National Association of Defense Industry of Ukraine, is compatible with—so far—five different missiles, according to Militarnyi. The missiles include Soviet, Ukrainian, and Western types.
If Shershen works as designed, Ukraine could turn its stockpiles of orphaned missiles and radars into functioning air defense batteries—without waiting for Western deliveries that often arrive months late.
The system "eliminates dependence on a single supplier," NAUDI director Serhiy Honcharov told Militarnyi.
NAUDI showed off a scale model of the Shershen at a recent trade show in Saudi Arabia. The model hints at the system's capabilities.
For starters, it appears to include launchers for both short-range and medium-range missiles, meaning it could defend against manned aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. Basically, all but the most kinetic Russian munitions, such as heavy ballistic missiles. For those targets, Ukraine would still rely on American-made Patriot batteries and European SAMP/T batteries.
The model on display in Saudi Arabia is fitted with what appear to be either German IRIS-T or British ASRAAM short-range infrared-guided missiles. More interestingly, the medium-range missiles in the Shershen display in Saudi Arabia are R-27s.
Normally, an air-to-air missile with either radar or infrared guidance and a range of up to 100 km, the R-27 is one of the few medium-range air defense missiles that Ukrainian industry can produce on its own.
Not coincidentally, the radar in the Shershen display seems to be a version of the made-in-Ukraine Radionix Esmeralda—normally a fighter radar for types such as the Sukhoi Su-27 and Mikoyan MiG-29. The Su-27 and MiG-29, both of which the Ukrainian air force flies in large numbers, routinely carry R-27s while patrolling for Russian fighters, drones, and cruise missiles.
Different sensors
To be clear, Shershen is compatible with other radars, including foreign models. But with a radar and a medium-range missile that are both made in Ukraine, Shershen could help preserve Ukraine's air defense autonomy. Kyiv wouldn't need to beg allies for missiles, launchers, and radars in order to defend itself from Russian attack.
Shershen is the natural extension of the Ukrainian "FrankenSAM" concept, which pairs available missiles, launchers and radars via various hardware and software "bridges" that help the mismatched components work together.
There are many FrankenSAMs in Ukrainian service, but each required specific engineering in order to mate disparate radar and launchers with, usually, one or two missile types. Shershen is more of a universal system that can readily accommodate a much wider array of radars, launchers, and missiles.
Yes, NAUDI claimed Shershen is compatible with five different missiles. But five is the floor, not the ceiling. "Why five?" Honcharov asked. "Because five were simply fired. If other types are needed for implementation, the work will be carried out to adapt them, and they can also be used with this system."
That's one way for Ukraine to ensure it always has some way of shooting down most Russian drones and missiles.

Long-range precision weapons have become one of the defining factors of the war in Ukraine.
Among the most well-known of these systems is the American-made Tomahawk cruise missile, capable of travelling vast distances and hitting strategic targets with high accuracy.
For decades, it has been a central component of US military operations.
A decisive factor
Military historian Grigory Tamar believes such weapons could significantly shift the balance in Ukraine’s favour.
Speaking in an interview with Anastasia Fedora on YouTube, cited by Dialog, he argued that providing Kyiv with long-range missiles would bring the end of the war closer.
“I am not the president of the United States, but I know Putin’s weak point without a doubt. The couple of hundred Tomahawk missiles that have been transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces are such a weak point for Putin – it can’t get weaker than that,” Tamar said.
He suggested that the psychological and strategic impact of such missiles would outweigh their numbers.
Drawing a historical comparison, he added: “At one time, Tomahawk missiles were one of the factors that encouraged Gorbachev to get closer to the United States in the mid-1980s.”
Strategic restraint
Tamar also addressed why Ukraine has not directly targeted what he described as “decision-making centers” inside Russia.
“Ultimately, everything that is happening, even if we don’t like it (and it hurts both you and us, because our blood is being shed, not Trump’s), is subordinated to the concept of deterring China,” he said.
He argued that any potential strikes deep inside Russia would require coordination with Washington and reflect broader geopolitical considerations.
There has been no official confirmation that Ukraine has received Tomahawk missiles.

The United States should provide Ukraine with Tomahawk cruise missiles and other military aid to increase pressure on Moscow, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) on Feb. 16.
Speaking at a news conference during his visit to Kyiv, Blumenthal called for a broad package of support, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense batteries, more F-16s, expanded drone production, and a wide range of other military equipment. He also urged passage of a sanctions bill he said would deliver a powerful economic blow to Putin and help force him to the negotiating table.
On Feb. 13, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) similarly called for Kyiv to be armed with U.S. cruise missiles. “I want the United States to supply Tomahawks to reach out and hurt the infrastructure that [Russian dictator Vladimir] Putin counts on to build the drones and all the other stuff,” Graham said at the Munich Security Conference.

When Russia announced a "partial" mobilization in the fall of 2022, its society experienced a genuine shock.
The queues at the Upper Lars border crossing into Georgia and the chaotic roundups of reservists are still fresh in public memory. The Russian authorities learned from that episode and shifted tactics toward a more concealed form of mobilization.
Several tools were deployed at once: mass recruitment from prisons, sending convicts to the front in exchange for pardons, and aggressive enlistment of "volunteers" through generous financial incentives — large signing bonuses, debt write-offs, promises of high salaries and a "better life," albeit often a short one.
This approach worked pretty well. Despite brutal "meat-grinder assault" tactics and heavy casualties, Russia's war machine managed to recruit at least as many people as it lost on the battlefield.
Between 2023 and 2025, Russia recruited more than 400,000 people annually for the war against Ukraine. That number has been sufficient to sustain offensive operations, even if not enough to give the Kremlin the decisive advantage needed for rapid advances and large-scale occupation.
If Moscow wants to maintain its current pace of offensive operations, it will need roughly the same number of recruits in 2026. Fewer volunteers would force a reduction in assault intensity. More would allow the army to continue fighting with little regard for casualties.
Can Russia recruit enough people?
The short answer is yes. Russia can announce another "partial" mobilization — selective, random, semi-coercive, whatever term it chooses — and pull hundreds of thousands into the army in a relatively short period.
Over the past four years, the state has prepared for this. New laws have made draft evasion far more difficult, penalties have increased, and digital registries of conscripts have been tightened. Police will not need to chase reservists: draft notices can now be issued electronically, and attempts to avoid them may lead to prison sentences — from which many will ultimately still be sent to war.
So yes, Russia has the capacity to mobilize people for continued aggression.
But the broader answer is more complex. The Kremlin will try to avoid an open mobilization. The lessons of fall 2022 were learned. Even an otherwise passive society experienced shock, and the political risks for the regime were real. A new mobilization might be technically smoother thanks to updated laws and better preparation, but Moscow still prefers not to risk it.
After all, why announce mobilization when, for four years, state propaganda has insisted that Russia is winning and that Ukrainian forces and "foreign mercenaries" are on the verge of collapse? As long as the war remains something seen on television, Russians will continue to support it and avoid openly challenging the regime.
Moreover, participation in the war has become part of a revised social contract: it is acceptable — even encouraged — if it is well paid. Few mourn these "volunteers." There is a tacit understanding that they went to war for money and must bear responsibility for their choice.
The Russian "volunteer": chasing fast money
Anyone who has spent time on Russian social media over the past three years (hopefully for research purposes) has seen the flood of contract recruitment ads. They are everywhere: banners, targeted posts, regional groups, federal channels. The message is simple: sign a contract with the Russian army.

The interplay between the weather and the limits of drone frames, cameras, motors, and batteries becomes much more complicated in the winter chill. Lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries alike are notoriously finicky at lower temperatures, especially the -20° Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit) lows that Ukraine has seen in recent months for the first time since Russia's full-scale invasion.
”Before a flight we try to keep our drones in the heat. When we’re flying, we set them out and take off immediately. You don’t want to gun it until the battery has a chance to heat up," Vladyslav continues.
"An interceptor drone was an effective device in good meteorological conditions — not in -20°, not in snow, not in rain. This merits attention," Anatolii Khrapchynsky, an aviation expert and reservist in the Ukrainian Air Force, told the Kyiv Independent.
Despite optimistic predictions of expanded production numbers, faster motors and greater autonomy, Ukrainian interceptor pilots are left economizing limited supplies of the drones they need. Meanwhile the Russian drones they hunt have gotten much better at escaping and dodging them.
"Before, (Russian drones) might circle the same place for an hour or two. Now they fly in, do a loop and, at the same speed, fly off," Vladyslav said of the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) drones he often encounters at the front line. "In our sector they’ve gotten more autonomous and they’ve added automated dodging."
Ukraine’s interceptors are by and large powered by lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries and guided via active links with their pilots. Russia’s Shahed-type attack drones and their various locally made knock-offs are powered by either two-stroke or jet engines, both of which generate their own heat. They also spend more flight time high above cloud cover and have more automated guidance than the interceptors looking for them.
The differential between Russian air power and Ukrainian air defenses has left Ukrainian cities more vulnerable than ever, including Kyiv, the epicenter of an ongoing energy crisis.
"If you as a commander are constantly dependent on one thing, and then that one thing fails, that is a catastrophic problem," Jorge Rivero, a former explosive specialist with the U.S. marines and now Russia researcher for the Institute for Defense Analysis, told the Kyiv Independent.
"In 1917, during the Great War, we said, ‘hey, our entire battle plan revolves around artillery,’ and then it started raining and artillery couldn’t fire anymore. That was a huge problem. Basically, we're doing the exact same thing with these drones."
Only recently have Ukrainian officials acknowledged even obliquely that interceptor drones have not lived up to their promise to fill in the gaps in traditional air defense.

Ukraine is considering requiring passport verification for the purchase of local SIM cards in response to Russia's latest use of FPV (first-person-view) drones, Serhii Beskrestnov, adviser to Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, wrote on Feb. 18 on Telegram.
Russia has increasingly deployed so-called "mothership drones" — large unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) that can carry and launch smaller drones. The tactic has significantly extended the range of FPV drones, which previously operated within 20–30 kilometers (10-20 miles), to much farther distances.
Russian forces are using LTE mobile networks and Ukrainian SIM cards to remotely control FPV drones, according to Beskrestnov.
"(The Russians) figured out they could deliver FPV drones on winged UAVs to areas with strong, stable mobile phone coverage, and then drop the drones on targets," Beskrestnov said.
Beskrestnov added that operators control the drones from inside Russia, with UAV flight times lasting "literally minutes."
Restricting the sale of Ukrainian SIM cards is one potential countermeasure, but Beskrestnov acknowledged it is "politically unpopular" and would require changes to national legislation.
The measure would not eliminate the threat of Russian drones entirely, but it could curb the scale of what he called an "uncontrolled process" of SIM card sales.
"In Russia, SIM cards are typically sold with passports, but it is not hard to obtain them through criminals or homeless people," Beskrestnov said, adding that Russian forces primarily rely on new SIM cards.
Another potential way to limit the effectiveness of Russian FPV drones is to disable certain data transmission services. Yet Beskrestnov warned that such steps would be "painful" for the country as well.
In early 2026, Ukrainian forces documented the first use of Russian Gerbera and Molniya drones as "mothership" platforms. In February, a similar tactic was recorded with the long-range Shahed-type drone, developed by Iran and mass-produced by Russia.

This winter has been the most difficult for Ukraine’s energy system since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. As the first cold weather arrived, Russian forces methodically struck energy infrastructure in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, as well as in Kharkiv, Dnipro and Odesa.
The capital proved unprepared for that scenario and, for the first time during the war, faced its most severe energy crisis, coming within a step of catastrophe.
NV asked Kudrytskyi whether Russia might ease its attacks as warmer weather returns, how Ukraine can move away from Soviet-era thermal generation, and what should replace it to get through the next winter and heating season with fewer risks.
— In your view, can we expect that once warmth and sunlight return, Russia will lose interest in attacking Ukraine’s energy sector because it becomes too expensive for them?
I wouldn’t rule that out. In previous years we did see a drop in Russian shelling after winter. Take the winter of 2022–2023 — the first winter of the full-scale war and the missile-and-drone campaign. Around mid-February, electricity outages stopped, the effectiveness of Russian strikes dropped sharply, and they shifted to other targets. After that, there were no strikes on energy infrastructure for more than a year.
So yes, it’s possible. Their appetite for these attacks depends directly on how much damage they can actually cause. The less effective the strikes, the less incentive they have to continue.

There are only enough resources for one at a time, so while forces poured into Pokrovsk the Russian army took Kupiansk in the north and Holiaipole in the south. When Kupiansk became the focus, Pokrovsk and Myrnograd were liberated by Russia.

At one point, the ratio was a staggering 27:1.
In late January 2026, The National Interest cited General Sir Roly Walker, the British Army Chief of the General Staff, as saying that the kill ratio in Ukraine is 7 to 1 in Ukraine’s favor.
This means that per one fallen Ukrainian soldier, seven Russian soldiers have fallen.
According to the Ukrainian government-run platform United24Media, UK intelligence at one point even estimated the kill ratio to be 27:1 in the battle for Kupiansk.
Neither Russia nor Ukraine is disclosing how many casualties the sides suffer, but analysts agree that the Russian side is suffering far more than the Ukrainian side.
The latest estimates from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine put the total Russian losses during the soon-to-be four-year-long war at more than 1.25 million personnel. This includes both killed and wounded.
So the million-dollar question is: Can Russia keep replenishing its losses? Not if simple math is a guideline.
Conscription vs. losses
In late December 2025, Ukrainian intelligence assessed that Russia had drafted 403,000 troops in 2025.
This averages 30,000–40,000 new troops each month.
Ukraine has publicly stated that it wants to increase the number of Russian casualties to more than 50,000 per month in 2026, up from the current average of 30,000–35,000.
If Ukraine is able to reach that number, Russian losses will clearly outpace the number of new Russian conscripts.
Cracks in the Kremlin narrative
The Kremlin is pushing a narrative of a Russian victory being inevitable. This is suggested to be a strategy to force Ukraine and the West into making concessions when a possible peace deal is signed.
However, in early December 2025, the Institute for the Study of War assessed that a Russian military victory in Ukraine is neither inevitable nor imminent.
Bloomberg cited Western officials in mid-January as saying that Russian losses exceed what they are able to recruit — averaging monthly casualties of between 30,000 and 35,000 troops.
So if Ukraine is actually able to increase Russian casualties to more than 50,000 troops per month, Putin might find himself in a situation where he has to order a mass mobilization in order to replenish the losses.

In the studio for the talk show “Muzhskoe-Zhenskoe” (“Male-Female”), Simagina accused her late husband’s family of turning her two children against her and cutting off all contact.

Before long, the show’s hosts were calling her a kukushka (“cuckoo”), a pejorative term in Russia for a mother seen as having abandoned her child.

Hosted by TV personalities Alexander Gordon and Yulia Baronovskaya, “Muzhskoe-Zhenskoe” on Channel One has become one such arena for these family feuds.
The long-running daytime talk show typically features emotionally charged family conflicts where guests air grievances before a live studio audience, while the hosts question participants, offer commentary and occasionally call on officials or social services to intervene.
The episode featuring Simagina has amassed more than 1 million views on the show’s YouTube channel since it aired last month.
Alyona Yermilova, a widow from the republic of Udmurtia, appeared on “Muzhskoe-Zhenskoe” with a similar dilemma. While in prison, her late husband signed a contract to fight in Ukraine with the Wagner mercenary group. He was killed in combat in November 2022.
Yermilova says she quickly spent the state payout from her husband’s death, sometimes referred to in Russia as “coffin money,” on clothing and to pay off bank loans and payday loans.
“Maybe I was in such a state that I didn’t understand what I was doing,” she tells the hosts.
Footage shown to the audience depicts her living with her children in a three-room apartment with dirty floors, a broken stove and an outdoor toilet.
“Homeless people live better than we do,” Yermilova says to the camera from her apartment.
A thank-you letter from the Kremlin-appointed head of Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Luhansk region hangs alongside Wagner Group medals on the wall of her home. Over the course of the episode, the hosts never mention why Yermilov was imprisoned.
“I have no nerves left, no strength. If they [authorities] take my child away from me, I won’t survive it,” Yermilova says while sitting at her husband’s grave.
By the end of the episode, the hosts called on child welfare authorities to strip her of parental rights.
Another show guest, Tatyana Sharafutdinova, also addressed her late husband who died in Ukraine on camera.
“I often come here, look at him and talk to him, so that things are good for him in heaven. Maybe I hurt him somehow. I always ask for forgiveness,” Sharafutdinova says while standing by the corner that houses her home’s Orthodox icon.
Sharafutdinova learned of her husband’s death in January 2023 and has yet to receive the government compensation for his death.
“As soon as he died in the war, the fight over the money began,” Sharafutdinova said.
Gordon, the co-host, called it “another wild story.”

I sure wish the Ukrainians or the Russians had a better plan on how to win other than fight to the death like the Soviets and the Germans did in WWII, killing tens of millions. My plan would have been to start designing, in 2014, weapons like the Tomahawk and Patriot and use them to destroy the Kerch Strait Bridge in the first month of this war. Four years later, Ukraine could have destroyed everything of similar high value in Russia, but Ukraine doesn't have any weapons like that on the drawing boards, let alone factories to make the weapons by the thousands per month. Four years ago, the Ukrainians hadn't even thought ahead about how to ensure a sufficient supply of artillery shells. As many as 15 Russians were killed or wounded when they unwisely piled into a single unarmored truck and rolled along the T0401 highway just north of Dobropillia in broad daylight on or just before Wednesday.

More and more it seems that people are understanding the reality of what is happening. Ukraine is not collapsing (first point) and the Trump administration is not “negotiating” a peace deal between the Ukrainians and Russians. For the past 14 months (and longer with the Ukraine collapse narrative) much, I would say most, of the reporting of the war was not based around reality but lies and distortions—many of them deliberate. The collapse narrative has been pushed relentlessly by the analytical community and the Trump administration who were trying to maintain that they both knew what they were talking about when they did not. The negotiations narrative was sadly enabled by a press that was too afraid of Trump to report the truth. And that truth was what we are seeing is an attempt by the US government to force the Ukrainians to give Putin what he wants, and in exchange it seems like bribes are to go to the US. The inability of this to be reported honestly is shameful. Both of these stories will figure in this update.

Russia struck a sweets factory in northeastern Ukraine owned by the American multinational company Mondelez on Feb. 21, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on X.
The factory, located in Trostianets in Sumy Oblast, was struck by a missile, Sybiha said. The plant has operated since the 1990s, and produces a range of well-known products, including Oreo and Milka.
"When Russia targets facilities owned by American companies on Ukrainian soil, it does so knowingly," Yulia Svyrydenko, Ukraine's prime minister, posted on social media on Feb. 22.
According to Svyrydenko, Mondelez has invested more than $250 million into the factory over the years.
A video posted to LinkedIn by Svyrydenko shows the factory heavily damaged after the attack. The extent of the damage and the potential cost to repair the factory remain unclear.
Andy Hunder, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine — of which Mondelez is a member — told the Kyiv Independent that targeted strikes against American owned companies are nothing new.
"Forty-seven percent of the members of the American Chamber of Commerce have had damage or destruction to their facilities across Ukraine," he said.
