CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 4438    RATING: 9.0 (G)    SERIES: FIREFLY

Well, I wasn't planning on it, but I can never resist the pleas of feedback (why, yes, I am an attention whore, why do you ask?).

Why won't you people let me rest in peace? I had my "fics in progress" total down to three! And then you all had to create this! Grrrr.

An epilogue of sorts from the "Didn't Mean Nothin'." saga, set two years after Kaylee left.

Disclaimer: They were't mine before, they're still not now.

Rating: G, really.

Comments: This isn't an "angst" fic... so much as it is an "aftermath of angst" fic. Also, if people want more (and there's a story to tell here), this can be chapter one of more.

Also? Acronym-ed Chinese. If you want translations, just wave your mouse over it.

SOMETHING FROM NOTHING.

"You alright, Sir?"

He looked up at Zoe's questioning eyes and sighed.

"Yeah." His hand pinched the bridge of his nose. "It ain't easy, is it?"

"No."

They watched the ramp close and Mal felt no joy in hitting the button that would seal the air lock. He could feel her next to him and knew what she was about to say, he didn't need to hear the words, he felt them in the way her hand came to rest on his arm.

"Wasn't your fault, Sir."

"Tell that to those folk out there with nothin' but a casket, Zoe." He gave it another moment then turned to face his ship. "He weren't supposed to be out on the job."

She didn't answer him and he didn't really expect her to.

"Mal?" Wash's voice buzzed over the com, loud and urgent. "Mal, you gotta come take a look at this!"

***

"Tian ni gu you xing guan xi yi jiao tang shu!" Mal stared, open mouthed. "What in the gorram hell is this?"

A black, pearly liquid like substance dangled from a pipe, taking its time to break free as one thick drop and splatter onto the floor, joining a growing pool of it.

"It used to be the engine room." Wash answered. "Before you hired..."

Wash's voice dropped off

Who wouldn't want a sequel is all I ask? Hmmmmm?

I just loved this, Mal hiring and inept mechanic again, Wash's scorn. She couldn’t look at him too long.

"It hurt her in a way she hadn’t been prepared for. His eyes, if only she’d been allowed to forget how blue his eyes were. Even the shape of his neck, the way small tendrils of his dark hair curled into the nape of it."

And of course I loved this.

You are the Master. I guess good things come from my searching outside my normal haunts for more of your writing. Wow. Thank you. And yes, I'd love to see more, even if we have to wait until "Best Deceptions" is finished.

Ahh, a sequel of sorts. How fun. And I am impressed at the catchy title, and I am also hopeful that the end of this saga will bring about a more satisfying conclusion for Kaylee. After all, she can't go home again, right?

I just had a thought on the way into work (yes, just one, I know): If this story turns out anything like the end of Pieces, I will be sending you my newly-existent Kleenex bill, yes?

Excellent!

My child at a year old could speak in whole sentences -- I had no problem with that at all.

Even the title is perfect!

WONDERFUL! More please!

By the way where on this site do you go to get a screen name?
Wednesday, 22 March 2006 15:58
Ugh. I was actually happy where it had ended the first time.
Wednesday, 22 March 2006 16:14
Dear Anon:

There should be a host of choices up the top and, right next to 'home' should be 'log in', you can get a screen name there.
Wednesday, 22 March 2006 16:35
Shiny! Glad you revisited this. I had a feeling that there was more story in there trying to make you write it.
Wednesday, 22 March 2006 16:39
Jacqui,

I am ecstatic that you have decided to continue this drama on. So many questions have been raised by this new beginning that you are torturing me in having to wait for the answers (eg. the father, what happened during the Reaver attack, will she get her light back). You must stop this torture of us and please, please contiue on with this series.

I'd wondered if maybe she was pregnant and miscarried, but this is even more surprising!

Ah yes, the old "mystery child out of nowhere baby mama drama" fanfic convention. Not that I'm really complaining mind you.

And wouldn't it be a shocker if it's not Jayne's?

No.
No, Bad Jacqui! Bad!
You do not do this to people. You do not suck them into your fantastic stories and then smack them in the face with plot twist goodness--then stop.
You write, do you hear me?
You Write!!

Can't be Simon's. They never actually did the deed. And since Kaylee thought about Jayne's eyes, my guess is the kid has them and that's why she couldn't forget.

Being a S/K shipper myself, I'm disapointed but, eh, I know Jacqui doesn't like the two together so its no great surprise.

Would love it if the kid wasn't Jayne's tho'.

Sweet nuns having sexual relations with church mice that was a shocker! (and great Chinese btw).

I've spent the last day thinking about the aftermath of the DMN series (okay, I'm obsessed, but not in a scary way, really). This is just so great, and of course you must continue.

Loved her thinking about Jayne when she saw him and how he thought she hadn't been gone that long (somehow I think that's just sweeter).
Reaver's hitting Kaylee's hometown is just wrong, tell me she's okay from that! And the child, I can imagine many possibilities for that scenario (not all of which involve Jayne, but I can hope right?), can't wait to see how it continues.

Loved this: "But it's Kaylee an' she needs us. I don't care if she asked me to walk down the street naked but for Christmas bells hangin' off my bits, I'd do it."

I seriously squeed when I saw that you'd posted this!!!

There better be more. I've got to know what's going to happen next, not to mention what's happened to Kaylee over the last 20 months. Man...please let us have more Jaylee goodness...please.

OMG Jacqui!

Please, please, please, gives us this story! If you leave it at this . . .well lets just say crying won't cut it. OOOh and yah for a hopefully Jayne's baby. You would think so by following the story, but alas, you are known for twists and turns, and out of the blue shocking stuff, so. . .

Anyway, keep writing!

Lordy, Lordy!

I was stunned last time when you had her leave, and now??!?! Where to start?

Of course it's well written, but then, it always is. You continue to amaze me with well written stories, nice characterization, well turned phrases and, of course, those freakin' plot twists! You do a really nice job of building an arc, foreshadowing things, and just making a really compelling story!

You realize that you absolutely need to continue now, right? Please?

wow.

First, so glad you kept going with this. Second, baby? OMG. I forgot to breathe as I finished this. *vision blurring* Hurry up, I've got to see Jayne's reaction to this turn.

What a rush to read! You really do know how to weave a story. I can't tell you how hard my heart jumps when I see you've posted something, anything.

Thank you *hand on heart*

As soon as I saw this was up I had a vague idea as to what was gonna happen, but it blew me away all the same. Seems like Kaylee's done some growing up, mighty fast and mighty hard. Maybe she's willing to make that choice now. I live in hope.

*waves fist* And, I swear to God, if that kid isn't Jayne's I'm gonna fly across the Strait and hunt you down, you hear me?

Jacqui,

My...my...my...you do love the act of torturing your fic fans, dont'ya? Real shiny intro to hopefully a series...or a chapter or two more.

And a baby....hmm....I wonder if we should be looking for a Joss-like twist to the kid's parentage....can't wait for more!

And you were writing this while chatting with me? I give up, woman. Just too ruttin' amazin'. Excellent job.
You know I think you're the best.

"Kaylee slipped out of the door quietly, closing it softly after her. The fingers of her left hand ran down the seam of it, the small sliver of air that separated her new life from her old one."

How subtle and how true.
