CHAPTER THREE: "No Harm No Foul".

***

She’s making coffee when he walks into the kitchen that morning. His eyes slide over her neck, over her waist, everywhere his hands and lips were last night. The skin behind her ear is pink, glistening in the steam from the kettle.

It makes his stomach tighten, like a fist.

“Mornin’.”

He’s always been grabby, can’t help himself, he loves to touch and feel. And this is Kaylee, nothin’ more needs to be said about that. He could stand there and touch her ‘til the cows came home. Hell, he’d stand there and touch her as the cows organized a mutiny, broke down the fence, took his guns and ran away.

“Don’t.”

She hisses it, one word, and steps away from him.

“But…” There’s not one other person in the room, no one but them. “I was just…”

“It didn’t mean nothin’.” Her eyes wouldn’t meet his. “You said it, Jayne, you said.”

“Kaylee.” He takes another step towards her.

She steps back again.

“Can’t be touchin’ and stuff.” She insists under her breath. “Just stop it.”

It’s the quietest conversation he’s ever had, all whispers and hushed voices. She might not be looking at him, but he can see something in her eyes anyway, a sheen of desperation, a plea. Fear. It’s a fraction of a second between seeing it and smelling it and he has to step back, has to grab a mug real tight and sit at the table.

Has to bite down real hard when everyone else comes in and she’s all bright smiles for

Wow! Maybe I'm a masochist, but this is a pretty powerful series so far. Actually, if you did make this a more fluffy piece as it progressed, it has the potential to be much more intense and moving than some of those that move faster.

Jacqui, until I started reading your work, I'd never considered "Jaylee" an option. Now, I have a hard time seeing any other option.

You're very good - Thanks!

Poor Jayne, always seen as the bad guy! And how could Simon be SUCH an idiot!

Can't wait for more Jacqui...although I also want more of your "Best Deceptions" series. Can't you just write both at once :-))

OH JACQUI! This is awesome! Maybe once Mal can actually help out Jayne and Kaylee instead of being the big, bad interferring brother! I am so loving this series. Is there a way to get to happily ever after for all involved? If anyone can do it, it's you. Meanwhile, more pain, please!

I love my Captin' he catches on fast.
I love all your series and you work on what ever you feel like! I will happily take what ever Jaylee you toss our way.

*heart melts*

See, I think this is my favorite Jaylee series yet. It doesn't ignore the Simon factor, it doesn't make Jayne all mushy and it doesn't make Kaylee sweet as honey. No one's perfect, they fuck around and the fuck up and that's real and powerful and...

*sighs*

Ouch! *sniff* Smacks Simon. Double smacks Kaylee. Hugs Jayne. Prods Mal. Loves Jacqui!

More please?

"I love my captain."

:looks down at the bloody heart on the floor, still pumping after Jacqui ripped it out:

Now we're gettin' somewhere!

This:
'Simon briefly considered ramming his head into the table top.'
and the cows running away with Jaynes guns reminded me why you were my inspiration to start writing these characters - I love thee, Jacqui, and I adore every bit you bring us!

*sob*

Oh, Jacqui, this is just so hearbreaking.

But it feels true to the characters, and a darker side to this love triangle than we've had before.......

Where are you going to go with this....??

I can't wait to find out...... But please say you'll continue "The Best Deceptions" too........

Thanks, Jacqui...... I alaways love the way you write the Jaylee relationship..... You always make it seem so new, fresh, exciting and so much more meaningful and interesting than Kaylee with that oh-so-uptight Simon!!

Jacqui, okay, so now my stomach's all torn up and I had a good cry and now I wanna go bang some stupid stubborn heads together. Ai wa, woman, but you're a hard taskmaster. Love is a bitch, huh?

Wow, just when I thought it couldn't get more intense! And how about that Jayne, being able to think before speaking when Simon can't manage that at all. (of course it was a place where you really wanted Jayne to speak first and think less, but hey I loves me some dark Firefly).
Please keep it up!

Awesome and heartwrenching and powerful and... *sigh* there aren't enough words in the 'verse.

This fic hits me on a visceral level. Reading it brought a lump to my throat, tears to my eyes, churned my gut, and made my hands curl into fists with the want to HURT Kaylee. God, I wanna hurt her so bad for doing this to Jayne.

Please make it better.

Oooh! Please, Mistress Jacqui, beat me some more!
I mean, errr.. WOW. This is beautiful, absolutely just. This was the best chapter yet, I think- so much happens and the context is all so tightly woven into the actions and dialogue.

I LOVED Mal's voice in this. You got him absolutely pat. I could just hear that bit about a big fluffy Valentine from Niska. Made me laugh out loud before I went back to crying.

I have no words. I'm in pieces over Kaylee hurting Jayne. And Jayne wanting to protect himself from Kaylee, who would've thought it?

I love Mal's part in all this.

Oooo I love this sooo much! The angst the Jaylee...fantastic stuff. I just feel so bad for all three of them, and now Mal's a bit in the know.

Can't wait to see what happens next!
Sunday, 26 February 2006 06:28
wow-i love how you kept Jayne and Kaylee's voice true-you are turning my insides inside/out with Jayne's attempt to regain some control with how Kaylee was using him. MORE!!

I don't quite understand the requests to make it more fluffy/perky/bubblegum. Maybe this just makes me a warped and demented person, but I'm utterly, UTTERLY loving the gut-wrenching going on here.

Write your lighter stories if you must, but PLEASE keep this one going a bit longer!
