Mal sat on the edge of his bunk, mind churning. Zoe's visit had healed him in some indefinable way. Problem was, he'd given up for a reason. An hour ago, he'd been more miserable than he could measure; now, he was simply terrified.
Zoe was still following him, and he was in no shape to lead. He took a deep breath. "Well, son, you're just gonna have to change that," he told himself. "Buckle down and face it, 'cause there ain't no way around it."
Seeing her had brought to the fore something that worried him deeply. Zoe was here too. If she ever had to go through something like that, and worse, if it had anything to do with him.......
He'd figured out just one way to handle life in this place, and that was to shut down and give in. If they tied you down, you'd best get used to it. If they locked you up, you were gonna stay locked up until they decided otherwise, and if they felt like beating you 'til you were half dead, then you'd better get ready to endure it.
Mal looked down and saw his hands shaking. Planning a way out of this prison and into some sort of a life for him and Zoe meant thinking plainly, and that was the thing he most desperately longed to avoid. Hope meant another part of him that could be shattered, and when you cared about the future, it became something else that could be snatched away.
"- find what happiness you can. Just 'cause it may be snatched away the next minute doesn't mean you can't have it." Zoe's words echoed clear as day in his mind. He supposed she was right, as usual.
He flinched as a voice startled him out of his reverie. "Nice to see you showing some signs of life, sir." Mal looked out through the bars of his cell, forcing himself to meet the eyes of the young guard sitting in the hallway.
"And why exactly would that be?" Mal asked harshly.
The guard looked nonplussed. "Um.....I....uh....You been looking so miserable in there, I just kept hoping you'd maybe pick up a bit."
Mal studied hi
One quibble: it's "losing" not "loosing" the war.
Looking forward to the next chapter.
"I love my captain."
OMG I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!! I am going to have giggling fits for days now.
This story is phenomenal.
You can't take the sky from me
I like physically weak Mal, and his nearly-not-quite decision to start living again. I think he's made it without consciously realising it, just by thinking instead of moping. And the scary guards coming to take him away were scary, but then it turned into a good thing. Hope Mal's gonna get fed sometime soon though.
Also, surely he didn't know Wash that well from prison camp? Cause he doesn't hire him cause they were buddies once, or at least it doesn't seem that way in Out of Gas. I'm sure you'll work it all out - I trust you. Can I also beg for the next bit to happen really, really soon?
Thanks!

In one of the Firefly DVD commentaries, Alan Tudyk said that he imagined that Wash's untold backstory was that he flew one mission in the war, got shot down, and spent the rest of the war in an Alliance internment camp entertaining his fellow prisoners with Balanese shadow puppets.
In Out of Gas, we see clearly that Zoe has never met Wash, but nowhere is it really shown that Mal doesn't know him, and the series never explained why this highly acclaimed pilot that everyone wanted to hire chose to fly for Mal on his rattletrap ship. My explanation for that is within this story...he knew Mal from the internment camp.
What do you think? Does it Wash? (Sorry for the horrible, horrible pun!)
Mal looked back up at Wash. "What the hell kind of summer camp did your parents send you to, anyway?" he asked, a grin sneaking across his face.
"The kind where spiders are haute cuisine, apparently."
Mal opened his eyes wide in shock and blinked rapidly. "You want me to eat him? But...I thought you were giving me a pet!" He looked fondly at the plate. "I couldn't eat Danny!"
"Man must do horriffic and....horrible deeds to survive," Wash replied soberly. "Thanks for not punching me again, by the way."
"I like to save that for special occasions," Mal replied. "Too much work, punching folk before breakfast."
Wash stood. "Speaking of breakfast, that incredibly annoying ringing noise in your ears means it's time to go eat." He smiled at Mal. "Let's go. You can bring back a little something special for Danny."
