The Losing Side, chapter 4

Wednesday, November 23, 2005

While very much Mal's story, this is dedicated to the characters within it; our beloved Mal, Zoe, and Wash. It explores what happened after the defeat of the Browncoats, leading up to Mal's purchase of Serenity. This is a pretty short chapter, more of a transition than anything else, but I thought it stood on its own to a certain extent.

Mal had no way of knowing it, but he'd been unconscious for nearly 16 hours when he slowly became aware of his existence again. It wasn't so much his existence he was aware of as the hurt that invaded every fiber of his body. He tried to open his eyes to assess his surroundings, but it would appear he lacked the strength to do even that. He tensed involuntarily at the sound of voices nearby and immediately regretted it.

"You reckon they'd - we'd - actually kill him? No trial, no hearing, bang?" asked one voice casually. "More'n likely," came the bored reply. "That boy's a massive PR balltwist for the brass. Bad enough if it comes out we can't keep one little inmate from taking over an entire unit, let alone that we broke him to bits on the spot. Public doesn't take too kindly to the notion of their own government torturing POWs." There was a long pause. The first man said softly "I kinda hope we do it soon, for that poor bastard's sake."

There was a derisive snort. "Don't waste your time worrying over him. Could've been you he killed out there. Man deserves to suffer for what he did. Trying to barbecue your own side doesn't speak to kindly to anyone's nature, neither."

"Yeah, you're right. You gotta be pretty messed up to do a thing like that."

Oh God no. Mal marshaled all of his strength to raise himself up to speak. The two guards glanced into the cell to see their prisoner's head move slightly and his body move a fraction as he gave a low groan. Mal's eyes locked with the younger guard's. "No...didn't..." his face contorted with pain and once again he lay motionless on the floor.

"Still," the man continued after a moment of silence, "I...I heard a rumor. Seems some of the prisoners are saying it wasn't him that started the fire. Saying it was our guys."

"Possible, I suppose. Aidan always was the gangster type. That's the case, it's never gonna leave these walls."

Mal lay on the cement floor in utter misery. He'd seen a lot of suffering in his day, never quite comprehending how it felt to

Neep! You can't kill Mal! Tell me he's being rescued by people in disguise, or something similar.

Great chapter - I agree that it stands on it's own. Hope the next one is coming soon. :)

I really REALLY want to see a Big Damn Rescue, can't bear to think of Mal in so much gorram pain and being blamed for something he didn't do. Mind you, the way those *wangba dans* were talking they don't exactly want to hear the truth anyway. Please hurry up with the next part! Ali D :~)

Jetflair- We seem to be on a similar wavelength, so I couldn't resist checking out your fanfic. I am not disappointed! Thanks for taking that step forward and writing. Now go write some more!

Oh, and you might need to lay off the "Appreciatin' Nathan" thread some...you left off a very important "s" from "assess".

LOL! Maybe I am Appreciating Nathan a bit too much....on second thought, nope. Not possible. Thanks for reading and commenting, all of you. I've done some non-fiction writing, but this is the first time since one extraordinarily lame attempt at age 13 that I've tried fiction. I am very glad it isn't too miserable a failure.

The next chapter will most likely take a few days to complete; it's long, important, and has quite a bit of dialog. Please don't worry; I lack Joss's storytelling genius, and there's one other quality of his I'm missing: the ability to kill off any of these guys, most especially my beloved Mal.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

It would appear I'm concerning a few folks. I'm kind of glad, since it means I've been able to the achieve the element of tension and fear for Mal that I was aiming for. But rest assured, it has always been my intention to write a story that would fold as seamlessly as possible into what we already know of Firefly, and of Mal.

I know some enjoy taking these characters and creating their own alternate stories with them, things we would never actually see on Firefly, and I respect those folks, but that's not me. I love Firefly for what it is and who these people are, which is just about perfect. My aim in this story is to fill in a few gaps, taking into account hints we've gotten about them, and help inform in a little more detail just how Mal became the man we see in Firefly after the war.
