It was getting so it was damn hard to remember which way was up. Mal wasn’t used to the feeling, and he didn’t like it. Not a bit. He didn’t like that the cause of his discomfort was a slip of a girl who probably didn’t weigh more’n 40 kilos, soakin’ wet. He really didn’t like that thoughts about this slip of a girl were invading his dreams. And he especially didn’t like that said slip of a girl had taken to watchin’ him all the time. In the cockpit, at dinner, in the cargo bay, it was gettin’ so he couldn’t turn around without seeing her standing there with her old eyes that seemed to burn into his soul.

Mal wasn’t stupid. Nor was he blind. The girl had caught wind of something in his head a few days ago in the cockpit, and now it seemed she was tryin’ to ferret out what it was. He would have been angry if he’d thought she was digging through his brain. She’d promised she wouldn’t, though, so he wasn’t. That did not, mean, however, that she wouldn’t pick up somethin’ by accident. She couldn’t always control what she heard, just like folks couldn’t always control what they thought. So, she stuck close to him, on the off, or not-so-off, chance that something would get through.

He preferred not to think on what that something might be.

Well, best of luck to her. For his own part, Mal didn’t even know what he thought. He knew she could kick his ass with both hands tied behind her back. He knew she was healing, but still incredibly fragile. He knew she put him on edge, and not just because she could kick his ass. The rest was a gray, foggy mess that he did his best to push to the back of his mind.

It was his turn for dish duty that night, and everyone else had headed for their bunks, exceptin’ Simon, of course, who had headed off with Kaylee to her bunk. He was busy drying the la

Very good. You write Mal perfectly. I hoping there will be a part 2?

Great job. I love Mal and River together, know that alot of people want Mal/Inara, but I think Mal and River match. They both need to heal and i think she can do that better than Inara. No playing games like Inara does. Hope for more from ya.

I'd like to thank everyone who's commented on my writing (this story and the others). I'm beginning to understand why writers say feedback is like a drug. ;)

I'm a bit of an amateur when it comes to writing fiction, so I need criticism of the constructive variety. I want to do these characters justice, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be more than happy to listen. Thank you.

Excellent, I love River's insight. Those two have so much in common it is no wonder they have a kind of unique understanding even if it is taking Mal a little longer to figure it out. Ali D :~)

You are doing very well! I love the way you write Mal. Its so...Mal!

I am opened minded to any Firefly pairing, but I wasn't sure how I would feel about Mal & River. But the slow pace you are going at is allowing it to mature and become something that I completely believe could happen!

Please keep going!

Searing, I'm beyond thrilled that these are ringing true for you. In all honesty, there's no other way to write Mal/River truthfully except at a slow pace. The series didn't exactly give us a plethora of Mal/River moments. It was the movie that made me realize how good they could be together.

So, in the absence of an existing story framework (like Simon and Kaylee have, for example), I'm going with the "slow and steady (or not-so-steady)" courtship thing here. I'm feeling my way into this, just a little at a time. Hope it won't get too boring. I do have 100 of these to get through, you know. ;)

So yes, I do plan to keep going. I hope I can post these somewhat regularly. "'Tis the season", and all that...
