Blue Sun Room FICTION - DRAMA

The Losing Side, chapter 1

Sunday, November 20, 2005

This story is dedicated to the characters within it; our beloved Mal, Zoe, and Wash. It's written mainly from Mal's point of view, being his story and all. It explores what happened after the defeat of the Browncoats, leading up to Mal's purchase of Serenity.

A while ago, I never would have considered writing a fanfic. I love Firefly, and I know my writing and storytelling abilities cannot approach the level of skill needed to produce a story that would be faithful to what we have come to expect from the series. But after reading some other fanfics, I've realized that's not always the point. If it's okay to spend some more time with the characters I've grown to adore by borrowing Joss's creation for a while, then why not do it. It will lack the genius of Firefly, but it will be something.

So this was the moment he'd spent two agonizing weeks waiting for; now, after hope had become a distant memory, the enemy was descending from the sky to their rescue. Or to kill them; seemed like a fine distinction at this point, standing among the bodies of men who had spent the last two weeks dying for lack of care. He didn't see much point to living now himself, and raised his weapon towards his last target; the Alliance soldiers soon to emerge from the med ship. A painful grunt to his rear halted the weapon's upward trajectory as Mal realized that to fire would be to sentence his few remaining men to death. He dropped the gun and closed his eyes as he raised his hands in surrender.

Funny how it didn't feel much like a rescue. Sergeant Malcolm Reynolds lay semiconscious in the medical bay of the Alliance cruiser, his wounds tended to and an IV in his arm dispensing the fluids, antibiotics, and painkillers his body needed so desperately. Zoë was safe, and he knew now was the time to be feeling relieved. But all he felt was the ache in his gut that no medicine could dull, and he couldn't help being acutely aware of the straps that were pinning him to his admittedly comfortable bed in the name of safety. Just as his prayers for victory, for help, and for solace had fallen on deaf ears, Mal knew know he'd been kidding himself to think that rescue would bring any relief.

Mal's muscles tightened involu

Well, you may not be Joss Himself, but you do a very tidy job indeed of writing fanfic.

I love the just-after-the-war stories, and I can't wait to see how you bring Mal and Zoe back together. Your story is great, but your language is maybe just a touch too formal? Your perfect spelling and grammar more than makes up for it though. Please, hurry up with the next bit!

I think I prefer formality to the often massacred dialects so many 'fic writers attempt. I agree with the guy above, perfect spelling and grammer, great job. On to the next chapter!

I think you did an excellent job telling this story and capturing Mal. Mal wanting to fight the last act by shooting at the Alliance Med ships, but realizing it would sentence his men to death. Mal losing his faith thinking it was all for nothing. Mal wishing they were beating him rather than laying handcuffed to what he has to admit is a comfortable bed. And, I also liked the irony of the wait to see if he would be one of those charged with war crimes. You know it's really good story telling when your only complaint is that you wanted the scenes to go on longer. (p.s. that is Wash at the end isn't it. I think I remember something in one of the commemtaries about him spending part of the war in an internment camp.)

I am hooked! I am in need of a fix...like another chapter? soon?
Very good storytelling and characterisation (I loved Mal in it) in that chapter. You managed to bring a lot of info about Mal in that part without overdoing it and boring your reader.
so...my fix? ;-)

I'm very thankful that you decided to share your work with us, despite that your "writing and storytelling abilities cannot approach the level of skill needed..." Oh, my. If this is a fair example of what you're writing is like, then I'd say you're a wee bit (read "a lot") hard on yourself. Beautiful work, in every sense.

Very good start. I thought you described Mal's feelings after losing the war so well, I especially loved his quip to the interrogator, "Yes, it's a very fine prison. Pleased to be your guest." So very Mal. Can't wait for the next part. Ali D :~)

Jetflair, I just ran across your fanfic.. now I have to say, I haven't read any fanfic yet, because, well because... something didn't exactly feel right with Mal in most of them... but you get Mal just right. Thank you for this. I love it. More 'verse! What a lovely gift you've given us!

Came over from LJ to see the beginning of this one. Looks like fun! In spite of the fact that I don't like to get started on long fics not knowing how long they'll ultimately be. Keep writing!
