Somewhere Down the Crazy River, chapter 3

Such was her ire with certain members of the crew that if that lousy bar with the deceiving name of Nick’s Café had had a decent door, Kaylee would have slammed it shut on her way out. Nobody treats my boyfriend like he’s a gorramn leech. Kicking a stone, she tromped over to the mule where Simon sat in the front passenger seat glaring at the “medical” building that so offended him.

“They better get happier after this job or I swear…” Everyone thought she was little Miss Perky Lou all the time but if they kept acting like jackasses, they’d see a whole other side of Kaylee; the side that had inspired genuine fear in her little brothers.

“Just who do they think they are?” Crossing her arms, she glared at Simon, so angry on his behalf. “It’d serve them right, one of them gettin’ hurt…” Appalled, her fingers flew to her mouth, trying to take back her careless words.

Simon grinned. “That’s okay. Just awhile ago I was wishing a broken leg on Jayne.” Taking her hands, he pulled her to him. “But then I realized his mouth would still be working.”

Delighted at his uncharitable thoughts, Kaylee wound her arms around his neck. “Can’t you, Dr. Three Percent, do somethin’ ‘bout that?” She smiled coyly, beckoning him to kiss her. When he did, she settled between his knees for a long kiss, humming as they partook of a little steetside necking. She was impressed that Simon was game for such a public display. She, herself, greatly enjoyed public kissing. Liked it even more as it turned to public tonguey kissing.

Until…Simon pulled away. Kaylee was about to playfully thump him on the head when she saw his alarmed expression. Turning, she watched, her dread rising, as three men ran from the Sheriff’s office toward Nick’s Café.

“You don’t think?” Simon asked.

“Course not.” But Kaylee wasn’t confident. The way their luck had been as of late…

The barroom door banged open again, people spilled out onto the street, talking and gesturing angrily to each other. The

This chapter has me wondering just what the worse Kaylee could do is, considering her threat is "BE MORE HAPPY! OR ELSE!"

Hilarious hijinxs, perhaps? If, say, after the events of Somewhere Down a Crazy River, everyone's still gloom and doom? Aggressive cheer-spreading techniques! I foresee PLUSHIES.

And Simon steps up, love his motivation, too. Not so confident in his ability to pull this off, even considering Ariel, but hey.

I appreciate the way you executed Inara's failure, I mean, realistically, how often was she going to be able to play the Companion Card before it got too predictable.

River's sideline comments are hilarious in this chapter.

I'm glad you are finishing this one:)

Speaking of River, I particularly enjoyed how one of her worst-case scenarios was subsisting indefinitely on a diet composed entirely of beets.

(Although strangely, I like beets, the purpler and more preserved the better. Hey! I'll have her beets if she doesn't want 'em)

I'm so glad you posted this! Kaylee just warms my heart with her PDA. I also liked her mounting alarm as she saw first Jayne, then Mal, then Zoe emerge from the bar. The way you wrote it, I could really see her scrambling along beside Zoe, trying to figure out what happened, the alarm and dismay of it all. But she kept her head! And Inara gave the rescue a good try, but no one bats 1000. River and Simon's making up scene was sweet, and I love Kaylee's explanation of Mal's anti-bail philosophy. It rings so true of Mal! A great ending, I am really looking forward to seeing the next part, and I know I'm not the only one :)

How hard could it be, indeed! Come next chapter I'm sure we'll find out! Greatly written, as always. I love the chemistry between Kaylee and Simon and the characterisation on River. Nice little shock, throwing in the female sheriff who can't be swayed by Inara's charm. Of course things can't be that easified that quickly!

Long and short, great job. Keep 'em comin'!

Great job on this chapter. Loved the little details like the no bail philosophy that rang so true to character. This could easily have been an episode of Firefly and would have been a riot to see Simon coming into his own. Loving this to bits and eager for what comes next.
