Serenity’s ramp set down with a loud, hard thud. Once his feet touched the hard, rocky ground, Simon’s eyes fluttered shut as he paused to breathe deep. He never tired of this moment, the first few seconds off Serenity, when he could enjoy the simple act of breathing clean, fresh air. At least he hoped it was clean… His eyes snapped open, his enjoyment of the simple pleasure dimmed considerably.

Pushing aside his paranoid thoughts, Simon studied the barren landscape. Since his arrival on Serenity, he had visited more than his fair share of middle-of-nowhere places but never had he felt further from Osiris than he did at this moment. Still, there was a harsh beauty to the desolation. On the horizon, the seemingly endless flat land met the clear, cloudless blue sky. Blue and brown touched and that was all he could see for miles around. Quelling his homesickness, he shook his head in wonder at the absolute nothingness that greeted him.

“Wow,” Simon commented as Kaylee wrapped her arms around him. “There’s just nothing here at all. Is the whole planet like this?”

“Nah,” Kaylee replied, resting her cheek on his shoulder. “It’s got all the usual planet parts – oceans, forests, stuff like that. But I confess, ain’t never seen badlands as bad as this.”

He tilted his head to rest on hers. “It’s hard to imagine anyone living here.”

“Yeah, well, yonder coupla miles is a real town. Smallish, I expect, being near here. That’s where the Cap’n’s heading today.”

“Then why park here?”

“Ship like ours landin’ encourages speculation!” Jayne grumbled, coming up behind them. “Ain’t you learned nothin’ by now?”

“I’ve heard you ask the Captain the very same thing, Jayne,” Simon said, not bothering to meet the glare he was certain Jayne was throwing his way.

“And,” Kaylee chimed in, “he said the same thing he always says to you when you ask t

MMMmm, tensions aboard the good ship Serenity. And River's jealously over not having Simon's undivided attention all the time is very understandable though what kind of alone time Kaylee thinks she and Simon can have in Barren Break is beyond me. It'll probably be the kind of place where splitting up is too dangerous and is it safe for Simon? I loved the handling of Zoe and her trying to act normally after the loss of Wash. Not an easy thing to accomplish. And Inara. Leaving again. And still not telling it like it is even to Zoe, just fudging the facts. And Jayne was absolutley and totally dead on. Ali D :~)
You can't take the sky from me

Great stuff! Loved your Jayne to bits - dumb and rude, but shrewd and crafty when spotting Simon's weaknesses. Loved the sibling tension between the Tams because it was precisely as Inara said - normal for River to have those feelings. Poor Simon torn between Serenity, Osirus, Kaylee, River, and the irritant that is Jayne. And loved the handle you have on Zoe, surviving in increments and staying focused on Mal and her relationship with him. Great stuff - looking forward to more.

In response to your blog, I really don't see anything "pornish" about your title at all... Although it does lead me to expect River to play some important role, even though you've said you just named it after a line in a song. :)

This starts out about where you left off (and yay, new installment!). You ended the last story on a more positive note, with River reading to the crew and even Zoe secretly listening in, but there's still this feeling of everything still starting to fall apart, no matter how everyone is trying to come back together. River upset with Simon, Simon torn, Zoe not speaking with River of Simon, Inara leaving, same problems with Mal, the precarious nature of the friendship she's developing with Zoe.

I found it really interesting how Zoe kind of channeled Mal (the accidental insult, followed by the brusque address of her leaving to cover it) in that conversation with Inara. Zoe's at least recovered some of that familiar ground from right after Miranda, when she was almost blaming Mal along with the Tams.

I don't begrudge River any of her drama, after what she's been through. Poor Simon, though.

Jayne... Well, so long as they can still make money, I guess he'll be staying on.

So far, so awesome! Great character, great dialogue, and excellent writing style. I think my favourite part was when Jayne broke the mule hoist just by pushing the button. Also, some great post-BDM internalisation by Zoe, and....aw, poor River. At first I thought she seemed slightly immature, but she's slowly making her way back to being a normal teenager, envy and all.

This is a good start! And after reading back through your blogs, I'm truly relieved to know we're not about to get caught in a Rayne storm. I really hate to start reading a promising-looking story only to find that vile abhorrence working its way in. Looking forward to more of this!
