Mal sat at the head of the table. The word, he told himself, was nonchalant. You can be nonchalant. You will be nonchalant, even if she's only a few feet away and glowing like candlelight. Smiling. She just looked at me again . Hair waving down her back. Soft as he'd always imagined. And she'd changed her dress. Nonchalant, he reminded himself. You could be more nonchalant engulfed in flames. Which you are, after a fashion.

Mal looked away for a moment to admire the tree and to pass a bowl of dip from Zoë to Kaylee. After this interval he judged it was not improper to look at Inara again. In a nonchalant manner. Her red dress shimmered where the soft-looking fabric caught the light. She looked - well, like Christmas come early. Her neck and throat were bare, he could see that much under the little jacket, and he smiled at that. When the little jacket came off, there'd be lacy straps and no sleeves. Bare skin for him to touch. Kiss. She'd worn it for him, maybe. What she'd said...after...it was a lot for him to wrap his head around, the shock of actually kissing her, never mind that they'd made plans to spend the night together. In his bed.

A piece of paper was thrust into his line of vision. “Here is our party schedule.”

“There’s a schedule?” Mal looked up to see everyone had received a similar piece of paper.

“We can’t mingle and eat?” Jayne frowned at his paper. “We have to mingle then eat then mingle again? Why so much mingling?”

River rolled her eyes. “It’s a party.”

“This don’t look like a party. Looks like a gorramn ---“

“Jayne,” Zoë said, folding her schedule and putting it in her pocket. ”River went to a lot of trouble to plan out this shindig. Least we can do is mingle as scheduled.”

“Does mingling involve dancing?” Jayne looked suspiciously at Simon.

“Talking is sufficient.” Zoë grinned at Simon’s appalled expression. “So, River, when is the mingling to begin?”

“How about now?” Mal asked in his demanding way. River had the party pl

You are evil for dragging this out in the most delightful and absurd way. Poor Mal. Poor Inara. And shame on Zoe for enjoying her friend's misfortune so much. And River is doing a great job of staying focused on anything other than sex. Loved this, and looking forward to more

Your description of Jayne in this chapter is vivid and his toasting of Wash not cockblocking him is hilarious.

Oh, the Mal and Inara stuff is good, too.

the way this is wonderfully written, i can see every character say what they're saying and doing what they're doing exactly and with total credibility. it is to joss' eternal credit to have created such lovable, earnest, tragic, complicated, and hilarous characters and you have taken them all with deep, kind respect and carried them forward with such ease. i admire this piece and am so greatly looking forward to the next installment. keep writing after part 5, will you? :-)

They're going to be tied in knots by the time they finally manage to get away from everyone! And you're evil (in the nicest possible way) for making them wait. This is an excellent chapter, and all the characters are perfect. I love Jayne hoovering up the leftovers, and River's schedule, and Kaylee thinking she'd got the perfect gift for everyone with It's A Wonderful Life ... unless you're planning on Mal falling asleep and dreaming what everyone's life would be if he wasn't there? Plot bunny escaping ...

Ahh, this is sooo evil to Mal and Inara! But in a totally good way. And the party was wonderful, with Mal using the schedule at the end to get to his date. Someone should write "it's a wonderful life" with the crew as the characters...

Yay Christmas party! Loved the toasts for Book and Wash.

I kind of wish we got to see Mal and Inara's reaction to each others presents... Especially in regards to the pin Mal got her, I was under the impression that it was pretty and something Inara would like.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the shiny feedback, Charlie and I are having a really great time collaborating. The Mal/Inara gift exchange will definitely happen in part 5. Also, I'm so glad to hear someone else hears a little resonance between George Bailey's time of despair and some of the things Mal has gone through. I've definitely thought about how the lives of the crew and those in the larger 'verse would be, without Mal and Serenity. Of course, Mal will have no idea what the movie is about - and Inara certainly won't be able to tell him!
