Crew fic. Mal wakes up in jail and he is not happy. Kaylee deals with a fretful River. Simon's bad day just got worse.

When Kaylee first saw the newest issue of Mechanics for Mechanics , her heart stilled in quiet joy as her eyes hungrily feasted on the cover. After all, every able minded engine enthusiast with a love for the Firefly had been rabidly discussing the unveiling of the Jazdon Astro Olomotre for the last six months. She was, however, wholly unprepared for the sheer beauty of the JAO. Oh, what she wouldn’t give to slide herself under that shiny splendor.
Sitting in her favorite lawn chair just outside Serenity, Kaylee studied the black, moonless darkness. Her fingers absently but reverently caressed the magazine on her lap. Even though she couldn’t see the glossy cover in the darkness, she could easily visualize the splendor of the JAO. She had spent a good part of the evening pondering the JAO, trying to figure out if there was any way she could incorporate the newest advances into Serenity’s well worn engine but as the night wore on and the air grew colder, her mind wouldn’t oblige.
Hoping to see the lights of the shuttle approaching, her eyes again searched the horizon. All she saw was more black.
“They are now officially alarmingly late.” River stated. Her tone was rude but Kaylee knew the fear was there. “What are you going to do about it?”
Clinging to the hope that everything was alright and the delay was a harmless one, Kaylee had put off waving Simon and Inara. She almost succeeded in convincing herself that it was probably a good sign that they hadn’t waved. She glanced down at the magazine in her lap, her hand trembled as her fingers again touched the cover. The night was full black and there was no way Simon and Inara would not check in.

Didn't someone mention ghosts and what not a chapter or so ago?
Well, and the other good thing. Inara and Simon definitely appear to be smarter than these guys. Let's hope that contributes to tracking them down and stealing the shuttle back.
And what fine mire they've all found themselves in.
I love Mal's inner chant, asking himself, "Why couldn’t it have been Jayne?"
It’s so hard for him to stay angry with Zoe:)
Inara looking not only frightened, but offended that someone would dare steal her shuttle, is a great character moment, that defines her well.
Hope we will see more soon.
And you are the 'greatest writer ever, better than Dickens!' Bet you didn't expect me to actually write that, did you?

Kaylee and River. You manage to have Kaylee both heart-breakingly adorable about the JOA (also, it grounds her nicely in a practical reality of technology, reading magazines and talking to other mechanics to keep herself up to date). And then you break my heart again with her reaction to the thugs. So scared and desperate and so dutifully trying to stay strong. It contrasts nicely with River whose two favorite people in the world, right now, are possibly dead. She's freaking out and lashing out. Beautiful! When you have Kaylee bringing her back fromthe madness later you light up every one of Kaylee's strengths. Wow.
Mal's anger at Zoe feels almost like a relief. Which is weird, because he spent most of this series angry. But seeing his anger so instantly defeated by Zoe's dispassionate state.. ouch. Thanks for having Jayne make me laugh, and for the jovial Sheriff. I can feel Jayne's fear.
And then you have Inara and Simon being hilarious in their desperation. Simon mouthing off to the idiot thug was brilliant, he just tends to do that, doesn't he? And how could you make him shooting the horse sort of funny?? Now they seem to be at the beginning of one hell of an adventures, two city slickers in the swamps.
When is the next chapter due?? :)
