Chapter 4- Complicated Deliveries

A day later and the false labor was gone. Zoe was in full labor and it had been going on twenty hours by the time she was ready to push both Simon and Inara were exhausted. Kaylee felt helpless as she waited with Mal who promptly passed out at the sight of his First Mate in birthing position.

Zoe pushed and pushed but there was no movement, "Something's wrong," she groaned as another wave of pain hit her. "Simon!" she yelled.

"The baby's breached," He checked her again. "I feel his foot, on your next contraction don't push until I say alright," he said as he found the other foot. "Okay push now."

Zoe pushed and pushed and then she collapsed against the table exhausted, "I can't push anymore," she told Inara.

"We need you to try, Zoe, for Wash," Inara said talking her hand.

"I can't," she cried and Inara wish Mal was awake. She glanced at the door and saw Jayne coming up the stairs.

"Jayne get in here!" she grabbed his arms.

Jayne looked at the situation and made a face, "Aw hell, I don't want to see this," he complained and made for the door.

"If you don't get her to push, Jayne, we'll lose them both," Simon said and Inara wiped the sweat from his face.

"Where the hell is Mal?" Jayne looked around.

"Increased blood flow, breathing and supply to the brain. Lights go out to allow blood to flow back around the system." River said skulking around the door frame.

"What in the devil's blazin' crack are you rambling about?" Jayne angrily shouted.

"He fainted." she said and he rolled his eyes.

"Why don't you just say that?" He asked and she hunched her shoulders. He looked back at Inara tiredly. "

So...we've come full-circle to where we were when you brought is into your literary confidence, eh JungleJulia?

;D

Definitely some brilliant work here, especially with Jayne's method of motivating Zoe to push to get Walker out into the world. Bet Jayne was glad Zoe was occupied when he basically shamed as she's giving birth;)
