“You did what?” Wash's shocked voice came out much louder then he'd been expecting. Zoe gave him a sharp look which clearly meant 'be quiet'. He continued with his voice much lower. “You can't ban Inara from a planet, or the ship. It won't even work.”

“No, it might not work. At least she'll tread lightly.”

“Or she'll go to Mal and demand an explanation.” Wash's amazement was evident as he pulled down his side of the bed sheets. They were in their bunk getting ready for bed and Zoe hadn't mentioned anything until Wash had wondered out loud why Inara hadn't joined everyone for dinner. “Or Mal will wonder where she was and go to her. You can't keep those two apart for very long.”

~

“Missed you at dinner.” Mal's footsteps had warned Inara of his presence so his words hadn't surprised her and she was able to respond with the right amount of annoyance in her voice.

“Still not knocking I see.” She was avoiding looking at him, curiosity about his home was almost too much for her.

“It just slows me down.”

“Yes and wouldn't that be a shame.” She snapped back sarcastically.

“So are you feeling okay?” His voice was genuinely concerned and it startled her.

“Yes, yes I'm fine.” A silence hung oppressively over them, and both prayed silently the other would speak. Both dying to remain in each other's presence.

“It's my home ya know.” Mal hadn't wanted to talk to anyone about it until just now. Part of him hoped that if he told Inara about it, he wouldn't be hurting about Claire. “Shadow, we're docked not 3 kilometers from my Momma's Ranch.”

She wasn't used to talking to Mal this way, she was much more comfortable when they were flippant. “Have you seen them yet?”

“No, she uhm... she died during the war. Killed actually. Hazard of havin' a successful business during a war.

I love the Chinese in this, some of it I have never seen before.

The scene with Jayne was wonderful, and a good question that more people should be asking themselves about.

This is a great chapter, the angst from having wanted posters foul up a job coupled with the frustration at having to deal with Claire again.

Wow, I love the Mal/Inara interaction, so close and yet they blow it again!

And I'm so curious about where Jayne's going... and Mal and Claire...

Great Story!

My wish was granted - it was just as decent :) nice to see someone addressing Jayne's feelings towards the death of his bullet-catching mudder...nice to see the big man coming across as compassionate...the whole hallucination thing was nice touch, now at least it's not just River who's a bit crazy :P

If there's one thing you seem to do as well as Simon and Kaylee, it's Mal/Inara...they're f-ing hard to write for convincingly and you pulled it off very well.

So, well done ducky...keep being creative, ya hear?

I'm responding to part 1 and 2 at the same time. I love the character interactions: Simon/Kaylee; Mal/Inara; Zoe/Wash and especially Zoe/Inara - which didn't happen often and you made it work as it probably would have on the show. I like how you bring up past episodes as well (Inara mentioning she was in favor of Unification and how Meadows took a bullet for Jayne in Canton). Jayne's feeling of guilt for Meadows' death is right on the mark too. At the end of that ep. he questioned why those people thought he was a hero so I'm sure he'd feel guilt towards one of them dying to his favor. I love where you're going with this and I look forward to the next installment. :)

Don't tell me the posters were Inara's work please, it just wouldn't be like her to be so mean and put the Captain in any danger out of spite. Now his former sweetheart, oh yes, I can see her doing something nasty like that. Can't wait to see what happens next. Longer chapters would also be neat! Ali D :~)

Again i loved it, you really brought a side of Jayne that not many would've seen in the series or movie. Excellent!! Keep up the good work!!

Well....I am definitely getting a "Hell hath no fury..." vibe from this whole wanted poster deal. Doubt it was Inara's work, Alison....she might get pissed at Mal a lot, but this? Definitely doesn't seem her style. Too blatant and unpredictable;)
