Serenity promo?
Friday, 01 July 2005 00:45:51

Hi all..I've watched this site for ages and this is my first posting. Hope it goes well. :) Anyway, I went to the movies recently and when the trailer came up, a few people, including myself, clapped and hollered. It would have done the crew proud. I talked to them later, and they said they wished there was some more publicity about it. I went home and thought about it and decided to do my part for it. I got the logo off the net, went into Illustrator and Photoshop and made one that would fit on a t-shirt. Then I thought, if I was willing to wear it, others might. So, If anyone is interested, I can zip the file and send it to you. All you need is a white t-shirt and a FedEx Kinko's (or any t-shirt shop) near you and they can apply it. I'm hoping to figure out how to upload the pic here for you to see

June Blog
Sunday, 03 July 2005 15:05:39

Not much to report for June. The work at Sarcan becomes fairly routine quickly, so I now have a rhythm to how I work. The only thing that pisses mee of is the paying scheme. They pay you on the 15th and 30th every month, but the cut-off time for the cheques is a week earlier, so every pay stub, I'm only paid for roughly ten working days. And after income tax and other deductions, it's really only 8. I hope to hell that there's a big ass severance package that comes my way at the end of August. I'm now glad that I have The Wedding Shooter as an extra source of income. As for that, I only had two brides this month. The first bride's wedding was a disaster. Let's just leave it at that. I'd rather not talk about it, actually. The second bride was much better and was a real cool chick. The only time she got mildly angry at me was when I said I'd have the video done by like Tuesday, but I only managed to get it onto a DVD by Wednesday. I have a tendency to over-exxagerrate, since the cumulative editing time is way less than three weeks, so I tell them "Hey I can have it done for you by Monday." I explain them this, and they're OK with it as well (I hope). I'm still not done with them, though. They want me to make a # of copies both in DVD and VHS. It's the VHS part that worries me. I havn't dumped anything onto VHS from my computer in a year, so I'm a bit unfamiliar with the process. Other than that, it's pretty boring stuff. Other small tidbits= I got MovieCentral for SIX FEET UNDER. Loved the season premiere, and the Ruth/George plotline is fascinating stuff. My AdultFriendFinder profile has been upgraded, so I'm kinda on the market now. First gal I met through it I didn't dig so much. Mainly because when she got into the passenger seat of my car, she was so fath that her fat hung over the parking break of my car. She could've crushed me. Hopefully, it'll get better and I can actually get laid before the end of the summer and my 20th birthday. And I now have a DVD that's half a month late. Havn't gotten around to it, because I've been so wiped.

My first Shindig Chat
Monday, 04 July 2005 12:35:53

I made it through my first shindig chat yesterday! Thanks for the warm welcome everyone from a newbie. I wish I could have been in the chat during the peak hours but well, life sometimes get in the way. I'm off to work for a few hours this morning and then back home to be lazy once again. Extended holiday weekends are so wonderful. Please, if you feel like chatting look me up. Moviechic3 on AIM and slayerfan1975 on Yahoo. I'm starting to get the hang of this place, finally. SF

when I first became aware of "Firefly" the series was way after it was off the air. Apologize to all the fans for not supporting the show when I should have. But due to my own personal "demons" I had to scale back on lot of my expenses and one was cable-tv. When I got the DVD's and watched the entire series, it had a lot of great potential. Only problme Joss Weadon had was he made the mistake and went with a network. Sci-fi shows, series, are best to be put in syndication. That's how Gene Roddenberry manage to revive the Star Trek "Universe". He didn't have to deal with the studio execs on how to run his show. "Firefly" as a series had some great potential. The characters was finally coming in on their own. The introduction of the "Saffron" character was a great touch, but they had to limit her appearences (if it lasted)to twice a season. That's enough of my rambling for now.

Don't stand too near me
Monday, 04 July 2005 15:31:33

I might have fleas. No, really, I might. My parents acquired a puppy at the weekend and so my sister and I welcomed it into the family but then we were told that it might have fleas or ticks and that they might spread to us. Nasty little things but the puppy (Milly) is soooooo cute. Unfortunately, our older dog Lucy was jealous at the best of times and now there's a new dog on her territory getting attention? She's not happy. In fact, she's pretending that the puppy isn't even there. Still, when she gets bigger they'll have to play together. I also had to sleep in the room next to her last night and she whimpered and whined a lot of the time, missing her playmates presumably. Our cat? Well, our cat is staying well out of it. She likes to walk by herself.

Ever increasing impatience
Tuesday, 05 July 2005 15:42:13

Not about Serenity, though. I've been a very good boy about waiting for it. Very little whining. No, my impatience involves my unborn son's complete unwillingness to leave the womb. My wife's due date is this Thursday. Everything we've been told so far - from doctors to family members with significant family history concerning pregnancy - led us to expect an early delivery. Which, I suppose, is still possible, since today is only Tuesday. However, when I think "early birth," I think about me - I was a month early. Both of my sisters were early. My wife is, as a doctor recently told us, "short." As in, she lacks height. She claims 5'1", but she ain't. She has no torso. OK, not NO torso - that would be odd. She has little room in her torso. Baby didn't have far to fall. In short, I want my baby. Above all, I want him (and my wife) to be happy and healthy and safe, but I'm getting antsy. I'll try to post a picture when he gets here. Assuming he's still a "he." In which case, I'll try to post a picture when SHE gets here. *** Speaking of the wife, something got me thinking about a really cute thing she did a while back. She had this really bad allergic reaction to some medication. OK, that's not the cute thing. She had some bad cold/sinus stuff going on, and she went to the doctor and got a prescription. This medicine made her itch like a mofo. Real bad - for several days, she could hardly sleep, had to take off from work, was literally about to go nuts with this itching that wouldn't stop for anything. Eventually, I had to call and bitch out the doctor until he found something to make it stop. Oh, the cute thing. After this, she took the bottle with the offending medicine and, rather than throwing it away in a fit of rage, wrote "BAD ITCHY" on it and put it back in the medicine cabinet. Not only cute, but smart. Gotta remember what that medicine was so she won't take it again. "BAD ITCHY" - that cracks me up. *** As you can see, my antsiness has kept me from getting a really good night's sleep for the last few days, and my sense of humor is bouncing all over the place.

I love Texas!
Tuesday, 05 July 2005 17:17:03

So, I spent the weekend vising friends in Dallas, TX. I've never been there before, so it was very exciting for me. I had a fabulous time, part because of the company, and part because I just LOVED Dallas. I wasn't sure how I'd like it. I'm not really the cowboy boots, country music and steak type. But I just fell in love with it. The city is so spread out and pretty. I didn't get that feeling of being oppressed by all the huge buildings staring down at me that I get in Philly and New York and other large, crammed cities. I enjoy architecture, so all the shiny buildings were fascinating for me. I saw where JFK was shot, too, but that was a little creepy. I loved the diversity of the people. Living in SC, everything is pretty much black and white, but Dallas is home to people in all the colours of the rainbow and it makes the city more rich. I loved hearing people talking in other languages (and trying to eavesdrop on languages that I know). It made me miss other places I've lived (before I got stuck on the east coast.) I was impressed with how clean downtown was (compared to Philadelphia, anyway), with how vibrant everything seemed. I loved all the little bits of art here and there, the little parks. It's a pretty city. On Saturday we rode the train from Plano (where my friends actually live) to the zoo and I noticed that every trainstop was decorated differently. I loved it. Also, I wasn't worried about contracted something nasty from touching the train seats like I was in Philly. It was very clean and shiny. The sky was SO big, the sun is like a spotlight shining on you all day. I loved it, personally, but my friend kept complaining how hot it was. She doesn't have the humidity we have here in SC. And I came home a bit browner than I left, so I'm happy. And the air was so warm and dry and fresh smelling; like clothes left out to dry in the sun. I also thought the people in general were very friendly. Gotta love that. Oh, and can I talk about the food? My friends, knowing my love of ethnic foods, took me to this incredible thai restaurant in Plano (it's called Mangos, if you're ever in the area.) I can't even dig up words to adequately describe how delicious my curry was. The best I'd ever had. And the portions were SO HUGE. I ate leftover curry for 2 more meals. I also ate at this fantastic greek restaurant in Downtown Dallas called Antone's. Antone himself kept bringing us more of his great food, encouraging us to "Eat! Eat! Try the spinach! Do you like the hummus?" The food was homecooked and wonderful (and how I wish I had his hummus recipe), but Antone was definitely the best part. He was a riot! There were so many neat restaurants. I didn't have time to try the Lebonese one, or the Ethiopian or the Jamaican one (my friends say that one's really good. But it was closed when we tried to stop by. I've never had Jamaican before). You could plan an entire vacation around food. Well, I could go on and on about how much fun I had and how much I loved Dallas. It was only 3 days, but they were all great. I hope all you Browncoats that are lucky enough to live in the Dallas/Plano area appreciate how lovely it is.

A Heartbroken Update
Tuesday, 05 July 2005 20:05:29

Well, this was a tough decision to make. I recently came to the conclusion that I won't be able to keep up with "Heartbroken: Meili Long" for the forseeable future. So I will be taking the first three parts down for now, and reposting them at a later date, when I'm better able to do justice to this piece. For the record, this isn't in response to any issues with fandom or anything. I have a heavy school quarter coming up, and I don't want folks to think I abanoned my writing or this fandom by not finishing it. I can't make any promises as to the completion, but I can tell you I will finish it. I'll raise my hand to the Great Whoever to promise that. Meantime, I'll still be around - still writing, always drawing.

Ooooohhhh
Wednesday, 06 July 2005 09:02:16

Hello there I have been away from this board for a whole two weeks and I must say I am a true geek because I missed it - even though I was on holiday! The shame of it. Anyway, I just wanted to say to all those doubters out there - despite the photos of the flash-floods and the near drowning of 2,000 people Glastonbury Festival was fantastic and I can't wait for the next one. Plus, I have a part-time job which means I can a) get out of the house, b) have some company and c) have a bit of money to spend on things without completely relying on my fella - hoorah! Anyway, back to studying now....

ZAZZLE belongs in the SPECIAL HELL!
Thursday, 07 July 2005 03:47:47

Right, so these arrogant khangs, under the guise of "your junk mail filter must've ate our warnings" pulled EVERY GORRAM ITEM off my Zazzle storefront! THEN they had the audacity to tell me, via form letter, that they looked forward to doing future business with me. Are they kidding?!? Seriously. Sure, I had *SOME* designs someone could say were a copyright infringement. But less than half a dozen of over 200 designs! All they had to do was say "These violate the rules so take them off", just like Cafe' Press does. But NOOOOoooo they pull EVERYTHING, don't warn me, lie about warning me, and then expect me to just continue as though nothing has happened. Fine, they want a war, they get a war. I've already expanded my Cafe' Press site (

Fantastic 4 review(spoilers)
Thursday, 07 July 2005 13:22:18

WOW.What can I say except Fantasic Four is just that--fantastic.............this has to be the biggest surprise of any summer movie,I was wrong--they were right.Oh by the way I had my brain lobotimzed and I smoked some crack yesterday so if im not making any sense thats why. scroll down for the real review.............................. NOT SO FANTASTIC! 4 ACTORS THAT NEED TO LOOK FOR BETTER AGENTS! DUMBEST PIECE OF SHIT SINCE YESTERDAYS DUMP! OKAY THAT LAST ONE DIDN'T REALLY MAKE MUCH SENSE BUT IM STILL IN A STATE OF SHOCK. Where to begin, first off I have a question--can I get back money from a movie that I saw for free,on the grounds that it waisted 90 minutes of my life that I will never get back?!?!?!?! Let's start off with the good--This has to be the greatest comedy of all time. The actor who plays Johnny Storm is good...................that's all I can say about the good side.On to the bad- The script--Every person on the planet Earth and beyond should watch this movie and learn how NOT to write a script.Plot holes like you wouldn't believe, but above all the dialogue!!! The metaphors are waaaaaayyy over the top!"You're STRETCHING yourself too thin Reed"(ah,yes I get it because he's going to become Mr Fantastic...) "I can't SEE you anymore Sue"(ah yes I get it because she's going to become the invisible girl)"You're such a HOThead Johnny!"(ah yes be---you get the point!)This next part leads into the acting, but when Ben becomes the Thing he goes home ,calls his wife outside the apartment .Here is some dialogue-- Wife-Ben,is that you? Oh baby i've missed you soo much. Ben-I've missed you too Wife-Where are you? Ben-Outside. Wife-I can't wait to see you,i'll be right down,i've got a surprise for you. So the wife comes outside crosses the street wearing nothing but underwear?!?!! Ofcourse once she sees Ben she calls him a monster and runs away(great wife) Later she she's him again and from a distance with sappy music playing she says nothing but removes her wedding ring(whoa that is deep) The acting-EVERYONE IN THIS FILM SUCKS!(except Chris Evans) Jessica Alba should just go into porn.Micheal Chiclets should be greatful for The Shield. The guy who plays Mr Fantastic--wow,who knew a guy from dinner theatre could make it this far. Julian McMahon---so horrible!I hope this isn't the new James Bond. The action-There are 2 scenes with action--seriously 2! so if you are going to see this film because you think it's gonna be a popcorn film--order a small popcorn. And now onto the WTF?!?! section- This is from aicn, and I gotta say this is exactly how I felt about this scene-- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fantastic Four is often described as the celebrity superhero team. I recall reading something about Tim Story saying he wanted to make a part of the movie. But he takes it to really fucking stupid heights. Sulking about being orange, Thing ends up causing a huge pile up on the freeway. The other three show up and they save a few lives that they were responsible for endangering. BOOM! They are the most popular people around. Everyone knows them, dubs them The Fantastic Four. They really haven’t done much of anything. They aren’t a team. They don’t have the uniforms yet. But everyone’s applauding. They don’t even leave the Baxter building for the next fifteen minutes afterwards, but we keep hearing about the crowds of people outside who in two minutes have shown up with signs saying how hot Johnny is and the already have a merchandising section in the Baxter building. Come on. It’s just way over the top. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I would also like to add that New Yorkers should boycott this film for making them all look like sheep! "DUHEE! PRETTY COSTUMES! ME LIKEY COSTUMES!" Okay,so I should admit that I am not a fan of Fantastic 4,I like the

Surreality 5
Thursday, 07 July 2005 14:47:26

Again, to those in the know...these still really aren't funny: My wife and I are painting the living room. A pleasing brownish color called Chatham Tan. The really cool thing about it (And, I'll never tell my wife this) is that now that its done, I sit on the couch with all my remotes and pretend I'm in the Batcave(TM). Doritos now claim to be better tasting. Didn't anyone learn the lesson when Coke starting tampering with things? There is a receipt taped to the desk above me in the tool room. On it is a price for a 1/4" Female Nipple....$1.01. Now, I'm not an alarmist or anything, but you'd think chick nipples would be a little pricier. I lent my Firefly out again...To fantastic results for once. Not only did my friend from work love it, he converted someone else at the same time! I bought a large Whatchamacallit bar before we drove to Kentucky last weekend...And forgot it in the van...When I found it, of course, it was melted all to hell. I picked up the bar as it slowly wilted over, and took it to my refrigerator. Later, I had a Whatchamacallit Salad! My mother decided to enter all of her grandchildren in the Catfish Festival beauty pagent last weekend. My son caught a third place. My daughter didn't place, but, the announcer called her as the winner. My daughter got the flowers, the trophy, and the tiara...the whole nine yards...for about three seconds. Then they took it all away from her and gave it to someone else. I was mad as hell about it, but I knew if I showed any emotion, then the people around would think I was mad because my daughter lost. Not the case. I was mad that I had to explain to my daughter that she didn't get a crown, after they had already given it to her. They told us later that the announcer left in tears. My response: "Good." My mother's horses managed to ruin another otherwise good vacation. We were setting off some fireworks...The horses got spooked and ran for the hills. All I wanted to do this time was ride a horse. But, my mother considers her horses too fragile after this, and my brother was the only one who got to ride. And, we didn't get to set off anymore fireworks for fear of upsetting the gorram horses. I'm beginning to like dogfood and glue more and more. I think that's all the weirdness I have in me for now...more to follow, and I'm a font! A VERITABLE FONT!!!

I saw Serenity! It was so awesome! Yeah and everyone else has to wait until september!

Okay I am officially re-watching the series (thanks Hotpoint!!)
Saturday, 09 July 2005 04:00:04

Now that I have re-read all of Hotpoints series (again!), I am officially starved for my Firefly fix. If anyone has read any good fics (series please, one-shots don't quite satiate my needs) please let me know the author or title. Oh and on a side note, I won't be lurking as much anymore. . .I might actually have time to hang out next week. Not so much over the weekend, my roomates birthday bash is going to pretty much guarantee that I'll be incapacitated and wanting to die the whole weekend. Take care all. . .catch you on the flip side. P.S. Pez, you still rock. P.P.S. All the chat peeps, you hold a special place in my heart.

Why I love 24.
Saturday, 09 July 2005 05:45:50

I've been wanting to write this for some time, but after reading a post here comparing Jack Bauer to rectal pubic hair, I figured it would be as good of time as any to proclaim my undying admiration for the series. The reasons I love 24 are numerous and varied. I started watching it when it first came on a year before FIREFLY debued. It really grabbed my attention from the first get-go when in the pilot ep, you found out that it wasn't the foreign photographer that was going to blow up the plane but the slutty, drunk chick who turned out to be the person hired to blow up the plane. As the show progressed, I saw how it just built and built. How it just piled on one tense moment after another, and even when it was resolved, you found out quickly that it was just another piece in a gigantic convoluted puzzle that showed you stuff that you honestly had no idea you were looking at. The whole first day seemed like a gigantic Hitchcock film that even after 23 hours, still had you on pins and needles and eagerly had you chomping at the bit to see what would happen next. And amazingly enough, it still has managed to keep it going. Even through an admittedly weak third day and whenever something happens that was way out there even for 24, there was still that "I gotta know what happens next" element to it that made you come back. I said in an earlier post that Jack Bauer could kick Mal Reynold's ass. I didn't mean that in a "fight to the death" kind of way. What I meant is that, if I was in a perilous situation, where I'm being hunted down or in deep trouble and had to resort to one of these two for help, I know that I can trust Mal. I know that he'd definitly be there to get my back. But as for Jack, I know that he's on the right side, but his methods and how he gets his results scares me. I mean, one minute, I'm being offered protection. The next, I could end up being used as bait or an incentive to get vital information, like in Day 3, when Jack nearly had to put a terrorist's daughter into a biohazardous hotel in order to get the terrorist to crack. Mal would never go as far as to nearly sacrifice the person he was protecting to do the right thing. So to me, Jack has that edge that Mal doesn't. Plus, the way that Keifer Sutherland portrays him, you know that this is not someone you can joke around with or get on your good side like with Mal. There is also the whole "what's at stake" thing that separates the two. Even though Mal lost his faith in Serenity Valley and everything else, he still has SERENITY and his crew. He has those people around him to restore all the things he has lost, and so e fights every day just so that he doesn't lose them. But Jack? Jack on the other hand has nothing to lose. By the end of each day, despite his best efforts, he still can't save the people he's determined to protect. By the end of the 4th day, he can't even protect himself. He's saved the world yet again, but he has to fake his death in order to keep an international crisis from erupting. He has no crew to go home to, or an ideology to live by. He has nothing to lose. And someone who has nothing to lose is the msot dangerous person imaginable. I'll continue this in another post.

Why I love 24-#2
Saturday, 09 July 2005 06:05:55

I'm a big fan of tragedies. I think it's more effective in a drama that is something bad happens to a character, it's because it's the character's fault and not by some outside force of evil or some shit. And the thing that permeates 24 more than anything is it's grand sense of tragedy. That all these people are doing what they do because they think or know is right, but because of some inborn characteristic, they can't achieve it and actually end up losing it. I'll give you an example of it by comparing it to another show. 24 and ALIAS both debued in 2001. Both shows have the main character lose a significant other in the first season. Sydney with Danny (played by our own Atherton Wing), and Jack with Teri. Syd lost her fiancee in the pilot ep. I think he got killed at the half hour point, I think. So we never really got to know him, their relatinship and what it would've been like. For all we know, he could've become an insensitive jerk. That, as well as the strain a marriage might have when one of them is a spy, might end up destroying the marriage. So while Danny's death was a pivotal moment in the pilot in that it became her motivation in bringing down Arvin Sloane and SD-6, in the end, it really didn't matter much. It was a plot contrivance, which was further solidified by how soon Syd skipped past mourning and jumped into the sack with Vaughn. But with Jack and Teri, you really got a sense of who they were as a couple. They had been together for years, had a child with one on the way, and went through the same trials and tribulations as any other married couple, but ended up coming out stronger. Throughout the day, you saw how the two needed each other. That for Jack, Teri was the thing that kept him sane and from losing it completely. The first day was just as much about Jack trying to protect his family as it was in trying to keep Palmer from getting killed. So when the final two minutes of the day ticked down, and you saw him hold her body in his arms, you were genuinely affected. You were rocked to the core with the fact that even though he could save the world, he can't save his wife. And of course, the whole second day was just seeing how much her death had affected Jack so much in that he was willing to fly a nuclear bomb into the desert and detonate it on a suicide mission, and not even blink. And not just with Jack. You take any character, even Kim, and watch their character and story arc, you can see that they are tragic figures trying to break free of their fatal flaws, and end up failing. I'm not trying to provoke an arguement or start a falme war. I am merely professing my love for a show that is similar to FIREFLY not only in occassional casting, but in that it went were very few dared to go, pushed the boundaries of what network tv can do and succeeded admirably. The only difference is, 24 is going into it's fifth season (or day if you want to call it that).

82 Days? Is that all?!
Sunday, 10 July 2005 14:40:10

Dayum, that's so cool! I keep rewatching the trailer on my computer (dude, I love a flat panel) but I still haven't seen it in theatres!

Austin, TX, Serenity Trailer
Sunday, 10 July 2005 14:41:48

So last night my wife and I went into Austin to watch Fantastic Four, hoping that my wife would finally get to see the Serenity trailer. (Ah, the joys of living in the boondocks where we have only dial-up and can't download video like everyone else.) So, we ended up at the Highland 10 theater at I-35 and Middle Fiskville Road. I mention this because the shift manager, Tim O'Neil, was very helpful to us Browncoats. The Serenity Trailer was not showing before Fantastic Four, but it was showing before Star Wars and Land of the Dead. Tim was good enough to help us find a showing when we could catch the trailer, and he allowed us to sit in the theater and watch it. He also mentioned that Highland 10 is the only theater in Austin that has the digital Star Wars; he was very excited about it. I asked if he would have Serenity in digital, and he said he hoped they would, but he didn't want to make any promises. Anyway, I told him that I would pass the word along to other Browncoats in Austin--Highland 10 is a great place to catch the trailer. Oh, yeah, and the seats are really comfy, too. Keep flyin'!

Just saw the trailer on Sci-fi
Monday, 11 July 2005 01:14:02

Maybe it's not the first time, I don't know. But after an episode of Battlestar Galactica they showed the trailers for King Kong and Serenity. Cool to finally see it on TV.

We're all goin' on a -- summer holiday...
Monday, 11 July 2005 11:22:26

Well, as y'all may have noticed, it's summer time. This means (along with chronic sunburn) that I won't have as frequent net access as I usually have. So I can't honestly say that I'll be around as much as usual (hell, you can work out that I won't be!). So I guess I'll see ya in September. Monday, 11 July 2005 19:09:57

My teenager had been begging for a new cellphone for the better part of a year ... ever since we activated an extra line and let him have my husband's very old phone. Cheapskate parents like us try to restrict major purchases to Christmas and birthdays, so guess what dear stepson got for his 16th birthday last week? So we went to the local Sprint store and let him choose his new phone. I did talk him out of the various styles that come equipped with a digital camera. Sprint was giving him two free months of the necessary internet service, but we won't extend the service, and so I said it was pointless to carry around a useless camera feature. Anyway, we have other digital cameras if he needs one. We walked out with the new phone activated and the stepson extremely happy with a phone that actually works for a change. Went directly to a local shopping center, parked, picked up a few mundane items. When we returned to our car, a gigantic red Hummer-variety SUV was parked directly in front of it. There are a lot of Hummers in our wealthy-suburban wasteland, and my stepson and I make a habit of cursing them loudly when we spot one (check out www.fuh2.com if this appeals.) But I didn't really notice this one until I was behind the steering wheel, started the ignition, and looked up straight into the blood-red maw of the vehicle of death on my bumper. Are you thinking what I was thinking? Reavers. It felt like every sequence in Firefly when a Reaver ship surfaces silently to loom before Serenity's helm. Red, sharp lines, huge beyond all proportion. The only thing missing was actual corpses strapped onto the hood. Shoulda got the camera phone. Then I could have just posted the pic and let everyone brainstorm. So, log-survey of the day: what everyday sight have you recently seen that evoked the Reaver aesthetic? Or that triggered some other Firefly-related "wow" in your head?

Ballad of Joss performance in Austin
Tuesday, 12 July 2005 15:37:43

So tonight (July 12) I'm going down to Spider House Coffee of Guadalupe Street in Austin, Texas, to sing "The Ballad of Joss" after our good hostess shows "Our Mrs. Reynolds" and "Jaynestown" on the big screen TV. The showings start at 8:30, but the owner says to get there by 8:00 to get a good seat. I hope to see lots of Austin Browncoats there! Since Spider House staggers the episodes, they'll be showing "Jaynestown" again next Tuesday (July 19), so I'll most likely be there for a repeat performance.

... and now, for something completely different ...

Can't count the number of times people have told my wife and I how our lives are about to change with our new addition (STEVEthePIRATEjr - see image in Blue Sun Room for photo, posted 7-11-05). They're right, and I'm glad. I'm ready to have some fun with this little dude. Thanks to everyone for the kind words in response to the photo I posted. I came across a fantastic Wash-esque outfit recently, but it's a 6-12 month suit. It'll be a bit big on him by the time the BDM gets here, but it'll still be cute enough to post. Thanks again. Gotta work tomorrow, so I'm off to rest.

Everybody, meet Millie
Thursday, 14 July 2005 11:08:58

Millie is the latest addition to my family. She's very sweet, even if she's a nipper and is trying (unsuccessfully) to intimidate the cat. Here, you can see the three of them in this photo:

Kirkland WA Firefly Episode Screening
Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:34:51

Here I am, just having read the announcement of the screening of Serenity 1+2, Out of Gas and Ariel on September 17th in Kirkland, WA. And I happen to live just about 10 miles north, yeah! I go and check my calendar for anything planned on that day and what do I have to read? There are many Saturdays in September and on exactly that one and only I already have a concert ticket for Dead Can Dance. I wanted to see them live for 10 years and now that they are finally back on stage it must be the same day as the screening, I could scream!!! :disappointed: Well, I can always watch the episodes again at home on DVD but it would have been so cool to see them with a bunch of fellow browncoats. And I have to miss the Jaynestown-singalong. Oh well, I will survive

Interesting Firefly fact I just learned on Jeopardy
Thursday, 14 July 2005 23:41:24

"Londinium" (The Alliance Co-Capital) is the Roman name for London. I new Londinium had a British meaning but I didn’t know it came from a Roman word.

The browncoats are coming!

Blog
Friday, 15 July 2005 18:25:17

We get a blog with fireflyfans.net?? Interesting

Freedom and the open road.
Saturday, 16 July 2005 00:13:15

Never written a blog before but thought this would be a good place to start . I passed my driving test a week ago and i'm amazed at how much freedom its given me. I don't have to get up so early in the morning to get to work (no waiting for beelzee-bus), which is a big plus . Its little things, like meeting some friends at the pub last sunday night (tho i didn't drink). I've been invited out before but i couldn't go becuase it was difficult for me to get there and even harder to get back home. I kinda live in a strange area, its classified as semi-rural being london greenbelt, and most of the people i know live in the towns that make up greater london. Getting the bus takes at least an hour, and thats when the busses turn up on time (which ain't often). Now it takes about 10-15mins to get there. So basically i've only had my licence for a week and I already can't imagine life without it.

Shut up, shut up, shut up!!!!
Saturday, 16 July 2005 06:27:06

No, I'm not yelling "Shut up!" at any of you lovely people. I'm yelling at my brain. It's waaaaaaay late here, and I can't sleep, because my thoughts won't hush up. I'm not really worried about anything, and my thoughts aren't bad. They're just constant. Did I pay that last phone bill? I need to remember to send my Grandma flowers in the morning. If I go into labor at 2 am, what will we do with Zoe? Would those peaches taste better if I took them out of the fridge and left them on the counter for a while? When does my gym membership run out? Did I remember to take my iron pill? What time is my next doctor's appointment? Did I wash Jon's black slacks for the wedding tomorrow? - Oh, man I still have to wrap their gift. What time is it? I need to go to the vet and pick up some more heart worm preventative. Maybe I should have went to law school instead of finishing with my BA. Did I lock the door? What time did the plumber say he was going to be here? Aaaaaaaaargh! Shut the hell up and let me sleep! I came in here to type for a while . . .maybe this'll help. Rant over

Harry Potter 6 Reading Blog - SPOILERS!!!!!
Saturday, 16 July 2005 13:11:16

Oooooohhhh very exciting... I have to say this is the best of the bunch so far. I have just reached the chapter titled 'The Half Blood Prince' which is a quarter of the way through the book. I have decided to have a break because the excitement and pleasure will be over too soon. So far we have seen a much darker world, a number of people we know and are fond of (Ollivander, Bones and so on) have just disappeared which is horrible. Plus the wonderful Bill is engaged to the awful Fleur woman. That is shockingly bad. Anyway, Snape is super in this one - JK has done a great job of keeping him mysterious and a possible loose cannon. I would write more but I must return.

HP Sauce Reading Blog continued SPOILERS
Saturday, 16 July 2005 17:26:55

OH MY GOD! Lavender and Ron! That is sooooo wrong, I am not sure I can say anything else I am in too much shock. Plus if Ginny and Harry get it together I will be miffed, I like Luna/Harry and Neville/Ginny but then, I am not JK. Mind you, to be honest the last 75 pages (term 1)have pretty much all been relationship stuff which is a bit much. The book has really slowed down after the amazing (and in my opinion the best) start. Ah well, I still can't put it down. I am having to force myself to do laundry and go shopping just to make it last. I can't see it lasting until tomorrow; Rowling is just too exciting an author even with all the kissing (bleugh). Back later...

I CAN ROOF!
Saturday, 16 July 2005 20:04:48

That is what I learned today. You see, our Habitat for Humanity is going to have a Women Build, a house completely built by women. To raise funds for this build, they're having a mini-build. We're building a playhouse that will be raffled off. I called them and said I could help out Saturday morning and they said, "Can you roof?" I said sure. In a previous blog I mentioned that I have some experience roofing and that I felt that if given the opportunity, I could teach people how to put shingles on a roof from start to finish. I didn't actually think I'd get that opportunity anytime soon. When I showed up at the Lowe's where we're building the playhouse, I was introduced as "The Roofer". And then everyone started asked me questions about how I wanted to do the roof. How many people are you going to want? What equipment will you need? I soon realized that I was the only one there with any roofing experience and they were expecting me to show them how to do it. Goodness! I took a few deep breaths, read the back of a bag of shingles when no one was looking, thought back to all the things I'd ever been taught that had ANYTHING to do with roofing, and said a quick prayer. And you know what? I remembered everything I needed to know. I remembered how to do the starters and to leave an overhang and how much to leave for a reveal and how to do the ridge caps and everything else. I taught about 6 or 7 other women how to do it and when we were done, it looked pretty dang good. True, it was just a little roof atop a little playhouse, only about 10 feet high. We only used 2 1/2 bags of shingles overall. But I feel good. I feel that I accomplished something today and I proved to myself that I could indeed teach people how to roof. Now I can't wait till we start the real house!

Well, I have done my second lot of laundry today and have discovered my actual age is 1.1 years younger than my real age which is pretty cool. This means I will finish HP just in time for bed so I will probably write my final blog when I have had time to digest it after a good nights sleep. So far though I have to say I am a bit fed up with the lack of plot. There seem to be three plots at the moment: 1) Malfoy 2) Harry's Lessons with Dumbledore 3) The bloody romances/loves None of them are inspiring me at the moment - I need some action but I think it is about to kick in as we have just discovered The Dark Lord has torn his soul into many pieces and Harry is off to kill a piece soon. I am enjoying it but it isn't having the emotional impact I was expecting, hey ho maybe it will come and I will regret wanting it! I was longing for some loving and now wish there was less of it, we are probably going to have deaths now. JK PLEASE don't kill off Neville, I couldn't bear it. Anyway off to bed now with the last 130 pages of the book... Night night and I will see you in the morning

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - SPOILERS
Sunday, 17 July 2005 10:08:25

Well, as I promised I finished it last night and although the opening chapters are the best in the book the rest of them are my least favourite of all of them. In the last book/s Neville and Luna were built up as relatively major characters and yet in book 6 they had all but disappeared. Considering they are 2 of my favourite (Neville is my favourite outside of the 3 central characters and Weasleys) this did not sit well with me. Other characters seemed to be ignored as well particularly Hagrid/Grawp, the Order of the Phoenic and Aunt Petunia. Also, the f@*%ing BBC spoiled the ending for me because they published a news item online about a certain character dying which was of course the whole point of the book. This meant that I could see it coming pretty much from the first lesson between Harry and Dumbledore. Plus, I am always surprised by the plots in these books but I knew pretty damn early that Snape was the HBP - it was too obvious. It was, however, completely unresolved. A nickname fair enough but that was too damn easy. Furthermore the gorram relationships went on and on but the thing with Ginny came out of nowhere (for me anyway) and seemed a bit forced - grrrrrr. In short there wasn't enough action and it was a bit less believable than usual. There were some excellent parts though: The funeral chapter was gut-wrenching I sobbed hysterically for ages. The final scenes between Dumbledore and Malfoy - against my better judgement I wanted to pick Malfoy up and huggle him. The final fight (which we didn't get to see - annoyingly) between the Order, Death Eaters and DA. The aftermath of this in the hospital wing was beautiful. Anyway, the next book better have more action and resolve the character developments and plots with all of the characters not just Harry, Ron and Hermione. It would be very cool if Luna and Neville went with the three but I think that unlikely. It will be interesting to see whether my hunch is correct that both Snape and Malfoy will turn out for the good in the end. I wouldn't be surprised if Dumbledore had arranged for Snape to kill him if anything like this happened. Finally, I will read the book again in a week or two and see if it improves upon reading. Book 5 did and is now my second favourite after Book 3 so you never know...

Tom Cruise...What Were You Thinking?!
Sunday, 17 July 2005 14:13:09

Ah, the summer movie season...time for old failed romances to come to light in the faces of new ones. See, this whole blog is inspired by spending too much time in grocery checkout lines. All those cheap rags by the counter touting this relationship and that. I would never pick up any of those, but it's hard to ignore the covers. For starters, Katie Holmes is hot...no doubt about it. And she's comparatively young...she has that going for her as well. But dammit if there just isn't something about Nicole Kidman that's simply intoxicating. You can just see her on a magazine cover and swoon...become all light-headed and stuff! Like, I don't even know that I can identify exactly what about her causes that reaction, but it's there! It's a moment like this: *gasp* =pause= Oh my. :) And it's not just movie starts that have that quality. Every now and then I'll notice someone on the street or a co-worker or whatever and have that moment. It's kind of a weird endorphin rush (which, granted, happens every time I see my wife). So Tom, I can understand the attraction to Katie, but what the hell were you thinking giving up on Nicole like that! -UO

Did some Gorram good, myself
Monday, 18 July 2005 00:11:57

I was inspired by a thread with a similar name last week, so today I printed up a bunch of flyers from the11thhour.home.att.net and spread the word to my corner of small-town Texas. I actually had more success at general stores and feed stores than at the video rental chains. (They seem to believe they had to get permission from the Alliance--um, I mean, the corporate office--before they could post anything.) I worked extra hard to talk it up to the manager of the local theater (the only one in town). Not only did I put some posters up there, but the manager suggested he would circulate info amongst the staff so that they could talk it up. I stopped at the Wal-Mart for some supplies before I headed home (which is even more remote than the little town), and I noticed a "Wal-Mart Free Publications Rack" in the foyer. I think I may whip up some single sheets with an 11th Hour poster on the front and info about the show, relevant websites, local airing times for SciFi, an announcement about the series marathon in the nearest big town, and of course, the BDM release! I'm considering a much smaller version that I can print 9 to a page and hand out--people I talked to wanted to keep the miniature Mal Wanted posters. So--get out there and canvass, people! Make the BDM break all the records!

Comics: An Epiphany?
Tuesday, 19 July 2005 02:04:04

After using this site for like a year I finally decided that it was time I got an account as well. I finally got the first Serenity comic. I was really disappointed when Newbury Comics didn't carry it, or many other comics actually. But today as I was driving with my family through Worcester I saw a comic book shop. I flailed my arms and demanded that we stop. There wasn't any Serenities left on the shelf so I asked the cashier. Luckily he had one at the desk. He said the comic brought a bunch of people to buy it and that a lot of the regulars were Firefly fans. He had seen the preview and thought that it looked good and mentioned having to listen to everyone moan and complain when it was cancelled. Lol, this conversation was truely moving, it was the first real life conversation I've had with a Firefly fan. I am marking this day on my calender. I thought the comic shop was really cool. I wanted to look around at the other comics and pick up a few, but my family was waiting for me. Oh well, some other time I guess. I definitely want to go back, I've been looking for a new hobby. Being a fairly artsy person I've always loved the style of comic books. I think that should be my summer goal. To learn to draw the human form better so I can do a comic. I've tried a few times before, but maybe reading and researching more into comic books will give me more inspiration. Now I just need to find some good comics worth reading. I could spend all day looking around in that shop! At least they're cheap, so I could buy a few a week without spending much. (Bless summer hours that give me BIG paychecks, but curse my evil..disgusting job!)

Hello San Diego (Glimpsing ComicCon)
Wednesday, 20 July 2005 04:49:41

Well, I am sitting here on the 7th floor of the San Diego Marriott Marina looking out at the downtown skyline. It's my first time here and it actually wasn't for ComicCon! I am here for a meeting of the National Academy Foundation (www.naf.org). Yup, flew in on Sunday afternoon and just as the Jedis and Browncoats and AnimeFreaks were leaving town, the teachers were moving in! I must admit, there is no stranger sight than rollin' through downtown San Diego (in a 1959 VW bus no less) and seeing Jedis walking right beside Aragorn copies and Sailor Moon girls! Didn't see anyone in Browncoat gear, sadly. But it was sheer chaos getting checked in at the hotel and back out into traffic to go to a BBQ on Fiesta Island. Needless to say, San Diego's an awesome town and I can't wait to be back. -UO

Why You Shouldn't Argue In Front Of The Children
Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:11:40

This flylog is rated PG-13 for coarse language. Everyone still here? Thought so. We've been having some problems with our four year old daughter of late. If you tell her no, she flies into tears. She's been talking back a lot lately too. Things like "Madelyn, I don't appreciated your behavior lately" She responds "Well, at least I got dessert already." I don't cotton to the idea of witholding dessert as a punishment, but I was almost sold on the idea right then and there when I said "I can make sure you don't get dessert for another week." Which led to another ten minute crying spurt. It has me a little haggard and confused as to how I should proceed. You see, she spent three weeks with her grandmother in Kentucky, and this is how she came back. Her grandmother (greatgrandmother, actually) caters to her every whim and never says no to her. I can't compete with that! But, all that is just background...Here's the real story. I laugh and seethe with anger over it, and I have no one to blame but myself. Okay, I only say I'm angry so that my wife doesn't think I'm total bastard...I think what happened was funny, and that's the bottom line. My wife and I were arguing about Madelyn, and how we should discipline her. I come from a different school of thought than my wife does. When I tell my daughter to do something, the last thing I want to hear out of her mouth is "Why?" It drives me up the wall. Another thing, in a related tangent, when I ask my wife a question that she doesn't really want to answer, she responds "Because!" My children...both of them, have started doing this too...Though I often hear my daughter saying to her brother "Because is not an answer." So, I guess a little of me is going in there too. My wife was basically running me into the ground, saying that everything I was doing with Madelyn was wrong. So, I said: manwithpez: Why don't you just call me a bad father and be done with it. wifewithpez: YOU'RE A BAD FATHER! I was shocked...what do you say to that...well...Here's what you don't say to it...especially when your two year old son is sitting is his mother's lap at the time. manwithpez: Fuck you! 'lilmanwithpez: BUCK GOO, DATTY! And, believe me, he meant it! Why shouldn't you argue in front of your kids? Because you never know when your toddler is son is going to say "Fuck you, Daddy." And, what do you do after that...If looks could kill, I would be a rotting corpse in my living room, but, I could not...and I can't stress this enough...could not stop laughing at it. So, be careful what you say in front of your kids...Your wife could end up loathing you for teaching your son a new phrase, and your son will think its perfectly okay to say "Fuck you." I love my kids.

This past Monday marked the passing of the third prominant military leader within the last month. I guess it's true what they say about people dying in threes. General Louis H. Wilson, former Commandant of the Marine Corps and Medal of Honor recipient, died June 21st. Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale, Medal of Honor recipient, died July 5th. General William Westmoreland, former Army Chief of Staff, died July 18th. Fair winds and following seas... Droppy

Busy Ballad Day
Thursday, 21 July 2005 05:10:36

Whew! It's less than 24 hours since I got the MP3 postcard of "The Ballad of Joss" circulating, and it's been a very busy day. Folks from all over have been emailing me to say they liked it, and/or to ask me about minor glitches. So I've spent all day responding, chatting, sorting glitches, and figuring out how to make the hi-fi version of the song available. And now it is. So if you got the postcard early in the day, consider going back to get it again. The 24 kbps version will still stream on the first page, but after you send to three friends (or skip that option if you must, you greedy hwoondan), you can download the 320kbps version on the third page.

Whine, whine, whine...
Thursday, 21 July 2005 22:07:35

This blog is dedicated to those people who complain about the trailer and the "Serenity" poster. I will now quote Harry Dresden (protagonist of the Dresden Files book series, written by Jim Butcher), as I feel this fragment of "Summer Knight" applies greatly: "Sometimes the most remarkable things seem commonplace. I mean, when you think about it, jet travel is pretty freaking remarkable. You get in a plane, it defies the gravity of an entire planet by exploiting a loophole with air pressure, and it flies across distances that would take months or years to cross by any means of travel that has been significan for more than a century or three. You hurtle above the earth at enough speed to kill you instantly should you bump into something, and you can only breath because someone built you a really good tin can that has seams tight enough to hold in a decent amount of air. Hundreds of millions of man-hours of work and struggle and research, blood, sweat, tears and lives have gone into the history of air travel, and it has totally revolutionized the face of our planet and societies. But get on any flight in the country, and I absolutely promise you that you will find someone who, in the face of all that incredible achievement, will be willing to complain about the drinks. The drinks, people." [...] I find this fragment relevant enough, in that we had "Firefly" and they took it away from us. We liked it bad enough to push and push and have people take notice of the following the show had, so we could have the movie. The movie is done. It was an awful lot of work for everybody involved. And yet, there's people who'll complain about such silly things as "the trailer doesn't have horses" or "the poster's tagline is all wrong." Are you ruttin' kiddin'? We have achieved the impossible. No cancelled show gets a feature film made. Ever. That makes us mighty. Just don't let the idea of mightiness go to your head. Usually, that tends to not go well...

Do I really want to be a millionare?
Friday, 22 July 2005 02:32:04

So they're auditioning military folk for Who Wants to be a Millionare on Sunday, but I don't really want to wake up early. That right there is the work ethic that made me the thousandaire I am today. Better set my alarm. I have people thinking I am a smart type person, but in odrer to hone my skills, feel free to ask me anything. That should convince me to stay home on Sunday. Droppy

cry baby cry, make your momma sigh
Friday, 22 July 2005 04:36:12

so anyways. been at a job for several months now. use this handheld nicknamed a crybaby. i thought it was cool. i think of the show everytime i put it on for work. it tells us what kind of change or assistance the cashiers need throughout the store. beeps everytime there is a request. look forward to requesting a day off to see the movie since we live so far away from a theatre. haven't come across anyone here familiar with the show, but will try to convince as many as possible to go to the movie. husband told me scifi will be picking up the old tv series (i've been working so much, no time to get online). if new eps come out, i guess we'll break down and get satellite (cable doesn't run out where i am).

Wanting something different and new
Friday, 22 July 2005 06:06:44

I'm thinking about joining the US Air Force. I've been talking to just about everyone I know, many of whom have military experience and have seen action in Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Korea, and Iraq. Some encourage it (including some who've never served), others don't (including some who have). I've been kicking this around for quite some time now. If I decide to do it, it'll be several months before I actually join. I haven't been praying like I should. Maybe I oughta start. 'Course, if I do, that means I won't be writing Firefly fanfic for a while. But I'll definitely go after a commission (since I already have a degree), and I'll have the resources to go back for my master's. I either want to be a pilot or a communications officer. Right now, I just.......don't know. We'll see.

Heaven Has a New Chief Engineer
Friday, 22 July 2005 13:39:51

Before I dive into a James Doohan tribute, I forgot to add that while in San Diego I visited a shop in Seaport Village with a very helpful gal who facially reminded me a whole lot of Kaylee. Very cool. Now, I was in the hotel just getting ready to leave town when I heard of James Doohan's passing on CNN. He will be sorely missed. And what can be said about him, really? He was the first to give us pause to think "Could we really talk to our computers through the mouse?" And he always showed us that it could be done and the dilithium crystals could always take a little more. But the most important lesson I learned from Scotty was this: Always tell your boss it's going to take you two hours to fix something when you know you can turn it around in 45 minutes and really impress him! Thank you Scotty. I hope heaven is putting its new chief engineer to good use! -UO

James "Scotty" Doohan Memorial 7/21/05 Seattle Sci-Fi Museum
Friday, 22 July 2005 18:01:19

Wednesday July 20, 2005 was indeed a sad day when the actor who played the grandfather of all engineers (I wonder if Jewel ever got to meet him...) passed away and I shed more than one tear reading the news and some of the posts on numerous websites. Posted myself a couple and husband and myself watched "Trouble with Tribbles" and had a toast with the last of our 21 year old Scotch. The next morning there was an article in the Seattle Times that the Science-Fiction Museum would hold a wake this evening to celebrate the live of James Doohan and I was quite intrigued to go there. I have never been to any convention whatsoever and despite living in the Seattle area like Jimmy our paths never crossed:-( It was a gathering of 200+ people from all walks of life. The museum had to organize more chairs as they did not expect so many people to show up on such short notice, surprisingly little do they know about the power of fandom. It was amazing, they had put together photos, Star Trek clips and a bag pipe player in black tartan who of course did "Amazing Grace". Reminded me of the scenes at the end of "Heart of Gold" , "The message" and "Star Trek II", so more tears could freely flow... Then many shared stories about Jimmy and I happened to sit next to a man who served on the naval carrier "Enterprise" and met Doohan there at a luncheon. He was very impressed with the way Jimmy interacted with everyone and how he had a kind word for each one of them. I guess there is another parallel between James Doohan and Jewel Staite:smile: After the story time they showed "Trouble with Tribbles" and I drove home in the sunset over beautiful Western Washington, the place that I am lucky enough to call my home now just like Jimmy did for many years.

Hockey! And more ... but mostly, HOCKEY!
Friday, 22 July 2005 21:11:05

Hockey is back! WHOO! Set aside my personal thoughts on the lockout that took the 2004-05 season from us (both sides were wrong, there were no winners in this situation, the fans lost the most, etc. blah blah). I love hockey, and the NHL is back in business. Sweet smells are smelling a bit sweeter today. So, here's my recent timeline. Nearly two weeks ago: first child born. Also on it's own level of awesomeness. Ten weeks from today: Serenity. I'm guessing you've heard of it. The week after that: Hockey returns. Most notably for me, hockey returns to Nashville. Go Preds! Any locals that might be reading this, you can find me in Section 301, staring in stupor and admiration at the freaks in 303. (www.section303.com for the curious) What could make this better? You mean besides a winning lottery ticket (ohpleaseohpleaseohplease)? A better job. One that I actually enjoy, as opposed to the one I have now, one that I'm growing to despise. Guess I've always gotta complain about something. Still - in short, new baby, the BDM, hockey ... All is right with the world. Well, almost. Still need a new job. Anyone hiring?

The internet is a bad thing...
Saturday, 23 July 2005 17:31:21

I tried to change my MSN Nickname today... BIG MISTAKE! 20 minutes it took me trying to think of something original, Eventually I hit on the perfect solution. As with all attempts to name things I resorted to the 'look around and pick things' approach. Which resulted in 'An Anaemic Shed' but guess what, someone had already taken it! Who picks An_Anaemic_Shed as their nickname apart from me?? This has resulted in me deciding the internet is a bad thing, so many people online at one time kills originality and as such makes me less funny. Down with the Internet! Down with conformity! Down with pants! Um, just ignore that last bit...

Wild West Tech
Saturday, 23 July 2005 22:07:24

So I've stumbled onto a mini-marathon of Wild West Tech on the History Channel today and right now there's little else getting done. They've just done a piece on the history of repeater (Colts, Winchesters, etc.) and I'm remembering back to my days of Civil War reenacting (about 10-12 years ago). I had myself a decent musket and I've used a friend's sawed-off shotgun and I've even played around with a non-functioning Colt .45. Now, I am a self-confessed peacenik...I drive an old VW bus...I'm not a violent man, but damn I love the feel cocking back that hammer. Feeling the antiquated mechanisms in motion. There really is just something reassuring about the weight of that weapon in your hands. It's strange...it really is! It is such a bad thing to like that? Ooooh, there's an episode on shootouts on now.

3D Studio Max. Grrrr.
Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:00:53

Been working on my model of Serenity, things were going really well and then max crashed. :blast: Its now 12:00 so I'm probably going to be working on it till the early hours to get back to where I started. :bash: Why O Why O Why didn't I save... :banghead:.

Losing My Suit & Grad Party, Tubing, Seaweed, and MORE!
Sunday, 24 July 2005 04:16:41

My family and Sean went down to Misquamicutt (sp?) Beach the other day. I wore a bikini. Little did I know how brutal the waves were there. They weren't that big, themain problem was that they broke in like a foot of water. So Alan, Sean and I rode this wave up to the shore. When it broke we ended up in a tangled mass of limbs. Also I lost my bottom. SO I try to pull them back up but whenever I do a wave crashes bringing myself and my pants down again. This goes on for a minute or two, when I think it's finally over I triumphantly stand up. That's when my sister looks over squeals and shoves me back into my suit. Lol, while I was trying not to flash anybody with my bottom turns out I was flashing them with my top. Oops! It wasn't like there was anyone there I knew, so it wasn't really embarassing. And only my family appeared to notice. SO we just tied my top tighter and that was that. But I didn't really go back in the water b/c I was nervous it would happed again. I thought I would be fine. It's not like I have one of those skimpy little suits made of 3 inches of material. Oh well, now I know better. Today was Kristin's graduation party. She had it down at Buffumville. Not as many people showed up as Kristin thought would, but she had a really good time. I had a great time as well. We got to swim on the little shores off the main beach that people nevergo to. The bottom was either rocky or covered and mushy mud and old leaves and logs, but it was much better than the beach. We had seaweed fights and played a game of chicken (I won!)We played volleyball, if you could call it that, we were really bad, and frisbee. Chuck also brought us out in his boat to go tubing. I LOVE TUBING! I only went 20-25 miles an hour, but it seems a lot faster when you're clinging onto a tube getting drenched with water and bouncing and jerking back from side to side. Most of the time I spent with Kristin, Jessica, Zack, Alison, and Josh. We attempted to play frisbee and catch with a football in the dark, at the same time. That was fun especially as Zach liked to throw things at me, pick me up and throw me around as I was little and he gets urges to mess with little people. But I had a lot of fun. I got to hang out with Alison more than I have and I met Kristen (not to be confused with KristIn) who was very nice. I knew Zach before and knew that he was a nice guy whom I liked, but we talked a lot more and fooled around a whole lot more than ever so it was sort of like meeting a new friend all over again. We all wanted to stay later b/c we were having so much fun and there was a full moon swim but Kristin's car is broken, my parents and sister were gone and none of the other parents would pick us up any later than 9:30. Anyways it was an awesome day. I believe that today was a very good step in curing my being socially inept. Other things, I got my ears repierced and we went to the New England Aquarium. It was fun, I loved the penguins, seals, turtles and especially this great big fish with whiskers on his chin...Do fish have chins? Hmm.. yeah they do.

It's a tough job, but...
Monday, 25 July 2005 04:50:45

...okay, it's not really that tough. I've spent the better part of the day watching Firefly. Again. See, I watched the series through for the first time last weekend, and my DVDs arrived on Wednesday, so I've been working my way through the episodes again. Just to make sure there are no defects on the disks, you understand. >_> Anyway, by this morning I had got to Ariel, when my friend Tyler showed up. After we got brunch, I forced her to watch the pilot. Half-way through, she was remarking on how much she dislikes the Captain, and what an a$$hole he is. By the end of the episode, she was talking about how much he reminds her of her ex-boyfriend. *grin* Also, she was eager to watch another two episodes, to finish disk 1. Heh. Then she had to go, but not before asking me to send her a link to this board. She's looking forward to watching the Sci-Fi broadcasts, too. It's amazing how easily the Signal propagates itself.

I got the Bad Timing Blues . . .
Monday, 25 July 2005 05:23:16

I really wish I'd written the Ballad of Joss about 6-8 months earlier than I did. To tell the truth, one reason I put off writing it is that the idea seemed really obvious to me, so I figured someone had already done it. Now, I've got a filk song that people seem to like, and no time to get into a con to sing it. I mean, I could go to Dragon*Con as a fan, but I really can't afford the trip. The management is too busy to even say no, though I've been told unofficially that they're full up on concourse bands. The Browncoats there aren't interested in sponsoring my band. We're not famous enough yet. If only I'd written that song a few months earlier . . . Cons closer to home seem to have either no musical guests (and therefore probably no interest in musical guests) or a bunch of musical guests, including bands I watched form several years after mine started. Sure, Firefly fandom isn't going to go away after the movie comes out--but let's face it, the iron ain't gonna be quite so hot come October. How did this get so complicated?

So Long, Farewell, Auf wiedersehen, Goodbye …
Monday, 25 July 2005 10:23:25

Actually it’s not so much goodbye as au revoir – I will be back and I’m making a big thing out of what, to you guys, will appear tiny and insignificant: – I’m going on holiday for 2 whole weeks to deepest, darkest France where there is no TV, no DVD and, above all, NO INTERNET!! (*Screams in horror* (think Psycho type blood-curdling scream)) I am so gonna miss you all… Don’t forget me … And, Fantasticlaughingfairy, if the tickets come on sale in the next 2 weeks for a performance of you-know-what in a cinema near us – BUY ME ONE PLEASE!!!! I will pay you back with alacrity and enthusiasm as well as money!!

Stardate 7.25.2005
Monday, 25 July 2005 16:36:07

Well I have a Xanga in which I post various musings and writings of mine, the_wandering_bard on xanga. Figures I might as well share my posts here as well. I have a shiney week all. In my secret silence, Finding soulful serenity, Letting all lapses leave My crashing conscience So that sandy foundation Find the solid stone's strength. I rebuild from runic wreckage Towers which reach to Hosanna’s heavenly kingdom, My mouth the herald, My heart the keep, My soul the stones themselves. Ok so how odd is this for me, to post. I never post, it’s shocking. Well I have had an awesome day, and wrote a poem that I have now shared with you. I am doing very well, and have just had a great weekend. I am starting to see a lot of clarity in my life, and have found an amazing amount of guidance, support, and the ever-important self-confidence. For those who don't know how I write though I share this with you. I suck at English. Folks, I'm in engineer. I can't spell, use a semi-colon properly, or know all the rules of a comma. My vocabulary is tiny, and I tend to make weird words, overneath, for example. Yet, when I take pen to paper to produce my prose, something takes a hold of me, and it get better with every verse. I don't make a lot of drafts and changes, just write, and there it is. It’s awesome and I love it, and hope I can keep fueling that fire that lets words fall from my fingers, to bring something to each of you. (This post was spellchecked, any ideas for a poem title. Let me know.)

Garramit, I filked again!
Tuesday, 26 July 2005 17:55:08

There's a line in a song by the Austin Lounge Lizards that goes: "Sometimes I wake up to find I've yodeled in my sleep!" I feel like that. So I was driving home from Austin last night, and this idea I had a week or two ago just started exploding in my head. It's a Class II Filk (meaning original tune and lyrics, but based on someone else's scifi). It's about Out of Gas. And it ain't funny. People mostly expect filk to be funny, but this ain't. If I did it right, it's gripping. And now I have to learn to play with a slide, because it's begging for a slide. I don't have a slide, so I started picking up random items from around the house to try. I commented to my wife that the most successful improvised slide seemed to be a double A battery. She asked if it was wise to rub a battery on my strings. I replied, "Nah, it's probably quang sh'duh." (My attempt at the Chinese-like sounds Wash made to describe the Reavers flying without core containment.) She said, "Are you speakin' Chinese at me, darlin'?" I denied that I was, and then I went for the sympaty plea. "Honey, I filked again." "Well, Babe," she said, "you'll have to clean it up." *sigh* I guess I'll have no choice but to record it, put it in an MP3 postcard, and send it around the 'net. Gosa!

Do Toilets Belong in the Kitchen
Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:12:46

Short and sweet today I am moving house and looking for a new flat. I have just been to a house where the toilet is in the kitchen and the fridge is in the living room. I ask you, what planet do some people live on?

Where's My Flying Car? I Want My Flying Car!
Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:23:38

Gorrammit, we did it! We're back in space! Hot damn! I can't begin to tell you how excited I am for this! And I had to listen to it on the radio as I drove to work, but Amber called me and said it looked awesome. They even have cameras mounted to the shuttle now. Reminds me of "Serenity" when they're blasting away from the Reaver ship! :D But this is so much bigger than any of us realise. I remember (I think it was) an Allstate insurance commercial from years back where Commander Sisko was asking where were our flying cars!? See, everyone looked at the 21st century as this potential new golden age where science fiction would become reality and we'd have moonbases and trips to Mars and interstellar exploration. So what do we have? We have a world that is scared and looking inward and very paranoid. If the Shuttle program had failed, been shutdown and mothballed, then I seriously feel like that would have been the end for our hopes of ever reaching off-world. The whole 'verse as we love watching would never have a chance of becoming reality! We need to keep reaching out, reaching beyond our Earthly limits, we need to strike out for the black and leave atmo' behind (tho, not forever)! Thank you NASA and thank you to the crew of Discovery for returning us to flight. You're our brightest hope for the future.

Shoulda known
Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:13:05

Every summer, my brother and his children and my cousin and his family and my family get together for a week with the grandparents. There are hours of air and car travel involved, so it's a big thing. For the last two years, this yearly shindig has been at my house. It's always a fun week, except my brother (love him) always ends up getting into a very heated verbal disagreement with someone (frequently me) over something idiotic. Yeah it's a fight, but not the kind Jayne would appreciate. This year's fight was over the rules for Taboo. (I told you it would be idiotic). I have always figured these fights were rooted in our childhood and something we would have to iron out sooner or later. This summer, however, I finally learned what the main problem is. My brother is Alliance. I showed Firefly to my cousin and his wife and my brother, starting with the pilot. My cousin's wife liked it (I later showed her "Out of Gas"). My cousin had been drinking and I'm not sure he followed it much. My brother, the Alliance scum, was unable to suspend "reality" for a few minutes and just sit back an enjoy. He kept picking at things, saying we already have this or that and why don't they. He would make comments on which of our BDH's were what in story formulas ("So, he's the one who sticks out like a sore thumb," when Simon showed up.) He was quite irritating. Of course, he knew he was bugging me so he did it more. If I had an airlock, I'd have been thinking of using it. Hmmmm. Yup, I'd have used it. On the good side: My hubby actually said Firefly was a good show (surprised me!). AND...I called the Universal rep for my area and Serenity WILL be in my town on Sept. 30. Woooohooooo!

Grrrrrr. They hurt my puppy.
Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:23:09

We took Zoe (our dog) to the groomers. When we went to pick her up, I asked if she was a good girl. The lady replied that she was good until they had to clip her nails. She asked if we had clipped her nails and hurt her once. I told her that we've never clipped her nails, and that we always have them professionally done so we wouldn't hurt her. When we got Zoe home, we noticed that not 1, not 2, but 3 of her toes were bloody. No freakin' wonder she cried while getting her nails clipped. They were lucky she's a good girl, because she's a big dog and capable of causing damage. Instead she just cried. I don't think I'm going to go to that groomers anymore. I'll take her to the vet for nail clipping like I usually do. I feel so bad. My dad tells about how mym mom was clipping my nails when I was a baby and clipped my littel finger. I was fine, but she apparently bawled for a week. I kow how she feels. I cried and felt guilty when I found out what happened to my poor puppy dog. Oh, she's fine now. The physical dammage was minimal. I'm still a bit pissy though.

Title?
Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:34:10

Hey, you know what, I have too many logs but who can resist another one. I do love to ramble on about nothing. I totally recruited someone with scifi Friday. First non family member. And maybe another one as well, but he is very slow to email, so he hasn't told me what he thought yet. I have another friend who's interested in giving it a look see but the problem is getting him over here to watch. I know this is probably pitiful compared to some, but since I work at home I have a limited sphere of influence.

New job! WOOHOO!
Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:17:48

Actually, it's a job I've had before, enjoyed and probably shouldn't have given up. But, it gets me out of the one I'm disliking right now, so ... PARTY! How this relates to you (in my twisted, "me first" train of thought) - I'll have more time at work to post and work on fanfic! Don't lie. I know you've missed me. So, today and tomorrow is all I've got left at this job. It's the happiest I've ever been here.

A Firefly-esque Expression
Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:54:54

So my buddy (and fellow Browncoat) Tree was up on the roof attaching another tin roofing panel when he commented that the number of ridges on the new roofing panels made it harder for him to stagger the screws evenly. Then he said, "I miss the old ones. These new ones don't math out the same." I thought it sounded like something a Serenity crew member would have said. Then I had a sudden image of Tree in the Firefly-verse, and I had this idea to write a fanfic that placed my neighbors and circle of friends on an old ship in the Black. Then I decided to lie down until the urge to write fanfic went away.

Mal's Song
Friday, 29 July 2005 23:01:57

I have read quite a bit on the boards about "Mal's Song" but was unable to listen to it for technical reasons. But thanks to the "Signal 3" I was finally able to. It is gorram awesome, and the interview with Michelle, who wrote and sings the song was really interesting as well. Dont' know how often I played it until my computer overheated:biggrin: Thanks to this thread

Hmmm
Saturday, 30 July 2005 07:27:30

I like to write fanfic :) also you think at first that knowing something is going to happen will help out when it does, but sometimes that's not the case. I'm thinkin' this'll be one of those times. Oh saw the new trailer. I love my Dvr I can watch it over and over :)

Friends (not the tv show)
Saturday, 30 July 2005 10:11:08

Ok so i never really posted in my blog at all, ever... so im going to now to clear the jumbled thoughts in my head Im very loyal to my friends, I care a great deal about them, and would protect them at any cost. like everyone ive met my share of bad eggs, not least Linda (whos story may be spraffed at a later date) even so, my experience with her didnt shatter existing loyalty to other friends. Im of course more carful about who I give my time too, and my browncoat family are most certainly a group of people id do anything for at any time in any way. I also have another group of friends who are not browncoats and just 'humour me' with my fandom. Recently (yesterday) I felt very let down by one of these people, and its all quite silly i think, but it breaks down to loyalty. I post infrequently on her message boards, due to a group of 'Heathers' (if youve seen the film you get me) making it as hard for me as possible because im a punk and not a trendy pop music loving babycham drinking scary girl. in other words im not what they call normal. (and dont get me wrong, these women are adults, not kids) so I asked this friend to remove me from her boards, as I was uber uncomfortable, and although unlike me, I felt it was best. She refused saying she wanted me to help mod these boards now they were getting bigger by the day (if you know me, its a support board for chloes illness) so me being one to always help out said ok, I log on yesterday morning to find the heathers spraffing about being made mods, and no sign of me. now im not bothered about that, im bothered that my friend said what she did, what was the purpose of it, to make me feel even more crap..... I seem to set myself up for being walked on. Should i become more selfish, stop caring so much, to avoid being hurt again and again. End of random and pointless blog

Hello! I'm here and New!
Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:05:55

Hi  A friend of mine at work told me about the site after she found out I was a firefly fan, she even went to comic con and met the cast. First 62 more days till Serenity   I can't wait for the movie, I dont know if you all heard of a site called Zazzle.com its a t-shirt making site. I as well as three friends of mine have made our own t-shirts that we plan to wear on Sept 30. It's a great site!

I Really Want to get Liz Phair stuff
Sunday, 31 July 2005 02:38:19

Liz Phair's new cd comes out in October. I'm trying to earn enough points to win a cd single or poster at

Ha! ( or Hook Line and Sinker :p)
Sunday, 31 July 2005 14:50:50

I totally got her. It took awhile but my sister is on the wagon...or... coatails maybe? Anyhow, She was Ok with Firefly after the first disk, then I finally wrangled her over to watch Shindig and she stayed right on through to Jaynestown :) He first Laugh Out Loud moment was Jayne tossing all Simon's stuff back in his room in Safe and then trying to walk casually away. That was a good sound. Then later when our plans to see a movie fell through she said "or you could just come over and we can watch more Firefly... Yes!

Why do I do this too myself?
Sunday, 31 July 2005 17:04:12

So, it's about noon here right now and I'm in a fog because I stayed up last night till 3:30 porting apps to OpenBSD. This always happens. Every night, I stay up way too late (damn I wish I could've found a job for the summer) working on whatever shiny object has caught my attention. And then for the better part of the next day, I'm in a fog; can't get anything done. I'm really going to have to change this before next academic year. Otherwise, I'm going to screw myself.

Jamster, The Crazy Frog and my slowly fading sanity
Sunday, 31 July 2005 18:27:47

I was at the pub last night, it was karaoke night and always game for a laugh I was searching the book to find something to sing and at the end I come across crazy frog karaoke! How is this possible? How did society fail to foresee Jamster becoming what they have and stop their existence? There are t-shirts for all the characters, a computer game coming out and now they have an advert admitting their ring tones are annoying and trying to get you to buy them to annoy your friends! Every society falls eventually, and I'm starting to believe it always starts with companies like Jamster. Down with the Internet! Down with Jamster! Down with conformity! Down with pants!

Back in the gorram hospital I go....
Sunday, 31 July 2005 23:52:26

(Insert appropriate Mandarin curse here) Still had a little weirdness going on post cardiac cath/stents 2 months ago, so I had a stress test. I was really hoping it was just going to prove that I really am a hypochondriac, and all was ok...no such luck. Still showing an area of blockage, and it was less than before, but still "significant" (whatever the hell that means). I was really, really imagining this was going to involve having a bypass this time, but doc recommended another catheterization. Well, I guess that's better than the dreaded "B" word, but still a piece of go se. The worst part is the giant C-clamp they use on your leg afterward for about half and hour...hurts like a bitch and made me start to pass out last time. And then not being able to sit up for several hours. Makes peeing very hard.... I'll be off work for a week because of driving restrictions, so at least I can hopefully work on some D*C costuming stuff while I'm stuck here, but that means I need to pull it all out of the boxes tomorrow and do the shopping I need, since I can't lift either. What a PITA....sorry to vent, but I'm just too gorram young for this, and can't figure out how it got so bad so fast. Especially when I had really been taking care of myself lately! Oh, well, I should be able to make D*C, and that's what matters right now....Maybe won't be as buff and organizized as I was hoping to be by then, but at least I'll make it....And I'll still be on this side of the dirt, and that's a good thing too.
