This thread, is inspired by the Teela Brown... thread. I want to know if there is a "history" behind some of your screen name things. Like why they are what they are. Some are fairly obvious (Herofcanton and captaintightpants are two i can think of off the top of my head, sorry if i didn't spell them right) but others arn't. Like mine. I'm Ebonezer because my horse's name is Ebony. One day (around christmas a few years ago) one of my barn rat freinds started calling him Ebonezer Scrooge. The Ebonezer part stuck and I've been using it as my name deal ever sense.

So yeah, all you people who have screennames with stories, i want to hear what they are.

I've been using Howdyrockerbaby1 for about 5 years now. at first it was rockerbaby from a tv show that i'd liked, but that was quite often taken up. the reasons for having the name now are different then they were

Mine is simple: Annik is a misspelling of the name of a Canadian communication satellite. I teach communication (applied writing, grammar, etc.) to computer technology students at at Canadian college, so it seemed a goodly choice.

Our farm is called Wild Heaven Farm, but that leaves the question of where I got that name from. Thing is, I'm not exactly sure. One day, it occurred to me that I wanted a farm and simultaneously I started singing the REM song "Near Wild Heaven".

My real name is Barbara, which comes with a whole slew of obvious nicknames (Barb, Babs, Barbie and every doll of the franchise you can think of ). Way back in the 8th grade, a couple friends decided that they wanted their own personal nickname for me and came up with Bibsy. One of them never used the name again after that particular gym class, but the other one used it all the way through college. He was only the one who called me Bibsy until, sometime toward the end of my college life, I adopted it for my email address. Since then, a good many of my friends have taken to calling me Bibsy, and I've found that it makes for a good, usually not already claimed screen name.

Winterfell is an icy kingdom in my favorite fantasy series ever written.

I was able to relate to the characters from that kingdom the most out of any book series i've read thus far, so not only is it my screen name for this and many other message boards but I also named my Heavy Metal Band Winterfell as well. So.. I guess it's good advertising too.

The actual extended version I usually use is Sunnydale_Slayer730...An obvious homage to Buffy. People usually ask about the 730 though, so here's what it means. There are many references to it in Buffy (even on the digital clock in "Restless"!)...730 is is 2 years - 2 years from the first mention of it until when Buffy sacrifices herself instead of Dawn in "The Gift". The series could have ended there, but kept going; I use the 730 to remind myself that there's always hope out there for more Joss-y goodness.

-i like the play on words (or letters, in this case.)

-i like the mystery of the kgb, and the word cagey also reminds me of mystery....some advice i got from my mom when i was younger "always keep them wanting more, always be a mystery"

-i actually saw this on a tv show i was watching when i was young with my dad in the wee hours of the night once. i forget the show, as my dad and i were night owls and often found watching infomercials or obscure tv at 2am. so, its also somewhat an homage to my young days, hanging with my dad, watching more ron popeil than any human safely should.

Shssay was the name of a character in one of the stories I wrote in highschool. Then I used the name for a character in a play-by-post fantasy game named Alleria. A lot of the friends I had on the on-line community only knew me by that name, so it became my alias for everything on the net. Now its like a second name.^^

My name is taken from a card of a Borg drone from the Star Trek Customizable Card Game by Decipher. If you saw Star Trek: First Contact, it's the drone that assimilates the crewman Picard shoots seconds later to spare him the fate as a Borg drone.

Like Mal I am captain of my own ship, figuratively at least. I never liked working for companies and answering to flunkies and management types who never had a clue what they were talking about, and were usually jerks, so I struck out on my own and, like the crew of Serenity, take jobs as they come and manage to get by doing what I want and staying free. I don't deal with anyone I don't want to and I don't do anything I don't want to. I'll never get rich but I don't deal with the long hours and stress I see so many others put themselves through. When I saw Serenity I found myself agreeing with everything Mal said and did and got chills up my spine during the final exchange between Mal and Simon (see my signature if you don't remember it) so took my name from that. I had never thought about why I had done it until I saw Serenity, that's probably the biggest reason why I'm a Browncoat, no show has ever shed so much light on my own life and beliefs before.

I misspelt 'reflexive' and thought "hey, good Star Wars name!"

It first got used as my username (and later a character) over at the Star Wars Galaxies RP forum, and has since then gone on to be my nom de anonyme pretty much everywhere I go online.

Fred comes from my college days... a character I created had the power to only be seen if the other person knew Fred was there; otherwise, Fred was invisible. It became known as the "Fred field". Sadly, it carried over into my real life, and plays hell with me when I'm driving. I have more people trying to merge into my car....

It's german and has connotations meaning "contractor" or "handyman" by best guess.

As a small engine expert, I often get stuff no one else can fix, or will even try, and after I repaired a pretty old Kreidler (little motorbike) for this very german dude (who barely spoke english) - he started callin me that, and it stuck.

My name comes from a Star Trek/Babylon 5 movie parody my fellow countrymen are working on on an amateur basis. It’s fairly new name, I was oblivious of that movie project until very recently.

I use the name because it reminds me how glad I’m that scifi as a genre suits me so and that I have a sense of humor which extends far and wide.

Well, I was learning about Daedalus and all that, in Latin at the time.
And I had just gotten a Dreamcast with Phantasy Star Online. I needed a name for a character so I took Daedalus and morphed it into Daelus. By taking out the two middle letters, obviously.

Not much of an interesting story, but there you have it.

Yossarian is from Catch-22. He's paranoid, yet his thinking is logical, even if it is skewed. My brain is the same way. Well, half is paranoid, half is logical, even skewed. So, it became Yossarian. Okay, done now.

In this case, I had just seen a Cordelia-heavy episode of Angel (can't remember which one), lopped off the "Cor" and became "Delia." Which works well enough.

There was a sandwich shop that i went to a lot in high school called the Hoagie Hut. the sandwiches were really tasty but if you ate more than one at a sitting you were probably gonna die. (this place had heard of health regulations but thought they were just suggestions). Mine's Dutch spelling for werewolf. Slight fascination with them, although not overly obsessed. My last name, translated from Germanic, means Beautiful Wolf, so the link was easily made.

Used it for my first email address aaaages ago and luckily I managed to keep it ever since. Usually werewolf as a nick is taken, but the boards I visit don't have many Dutch werewolves, aparently.

This is probably going to be too long but I can't think how to shorten it.

I was starting a new D&D campaign a long time ago and needed a name. One of my 'friends' swiped the one I was going to use, Corwyn, so I settled on my next choice: Bleys. Both from Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber. Bleys wasn't exactly the character I wanted to play so later on I started coming up with stories about the character I had wanted so I morphed the name into Bleydion op Rhys (some Katherine Kurtz influence and some Ann Mccaffrey).

A few years later I joined the SCA (see http://www.sca.org) and needed a historically plausible name so I started doing some research and found a Welsh nickname that was first recorded sometime around the 14th century and meant 'little wolf', or wolfling or wolf cub. It can be spelled quite a few different ways but I settled on Bleyddyn ap Rhys, and I've been using it in the SCA and many places online since then.

The full version is: Bleyddyn ap Rhys ap Gwydion ap Emrys y Gwynedd, which means 'Little Wolf' son of Rhys, son of Gwydion, son of Emrys, who is from the kingdom of Gwynedd (one of the three or four kingdoms of Wales a long time ago).

I'm still best friends with the girls I was best friends with at school, and in grade nine I went babysitting with one of them and we were playing Duck Hunt after the kids went to bed on that cutting-edge-at-the-time Original Nintendo system. Well, we were trying to throw each other off (since the room was so small we were sitting quite close to the TV and it was hard to miss) by heckling each other and at one point I said "C'mon! Shoot their little duckie butts!" and she said "Shut up or I'll kick *your* duckie butt!!" after which she - and then my other friends - started calling me Duckie. And since, 14 years on, these are the same freaks I still hang with, it kind of stuck

Mine was originally shamelessly stolen from Robin McKinley's 'The Hero and the Crown'. I stole it for the purposes of creating a character on a RPG, and someone already had the alias 'Aerin,' so I chucked in another r and there you have it.

That was 5 years ago, and since then I've used it in everything from email addresses to IM names to LJ to bb screennames - and I've yet to come across another one. So if you see an Aerrin somewhere on the net, it's probably me!

Finn Mac Cumhal, (pron. Fin Mahk Coo’al)

Finn Mac Cumhal, in Irish Mythology, was the last leader of the Fianna, a band of elite free Irish warriors who served the High King of Ireland in pre-Christian Ireland. The adventures of Finn and the Fianna were recorded in the 12th Century by Irish bards in what is today called the Fenian Cycle, but the stories date to the 3rd century.

I've used Another ___ fan pretty much everywhere, it works quite well.

But my AIM screenname (which anyone is free to contact, I'd like to add more browncoats to my buddy list) ReptilianSamurai has a bit more back story to it. My favorite group is Oingo Boingo, and one of their songs is Reptiles and Samurai. I kept trying for screennames on AIM, and all kept being taken until this one. So, ReptilianSamurai stuck... I later named my website ( http://reptiliansamurai.0catch.com ) after it as well, because I couldn't think of anything better... and now there's a little animation to go with it too!

For me, Paladin is my default alias for just about everything. This has been going on for about 8 years now.

I originally got the name from a Magic: the Gathering card titled "Northern Paladin." It was a decently powerful card with low sumoning cost. I mainly just liked the name and picture. Later that same year I became a roelplayer at the local Ultrazone (lazer tag place). I had to choose a name to go by, Northern Paladin was too many letters so I shortened it to Paladin and the rest is history. Unfortunately, I have since lost the card somewhere in the dark recesses of my room.

“El Frenetico & Go Girl” is my favorite superhero team from some straight to video “movies” I worked on years ago. El-Frenetico is a washed up alcoholic Mexican wrestler / crime fighter who is always dubbed. Mine comes from a 1980's parody film assembled by members of the Firesign Theater. The Film was called "J-Men Forever", and it was a collection of clips from old Republic Studio's movie serials, with newly dubbed comedy voice-overs. The Commando Cody/Rocketman character was renamed "Rocket Jock", which tickled me; my mundane initials are R.J., which fits too.

Guided By Voices are one of my favourite bands, which I got into via Buffy (Teenage FBI was on the first compilation album, and I hunted out Do The Collapse for that tune, and have been hoovering up their material ever since).

There's the Whedonverse connection, but I felt the need to gussy it up some in the Firefly direction, and what with River's "its getting very very crowded in here", the two came together.

My handle, Lupin Addams, comes from a character in an unpublished semi-autobiographical novel written by a friend of mine - the character is based on me, so I felt fine about nicking it!
(Plus since a lot of the cooler handles have been taken by others on various lists, I figure there aren't going to be many others out there with this particular name!)

Lupin - of the wolf (yeah, should be 'lupine', but hey...), also a kind of plant...

Mine is inspired by the astounding high fantasy series, Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, by Steven Erikson.

Sorcery is an everyday thing and there are many levels of power and practitioners, including humans. Mages are able to access and draw upon warrens or paths of power and achieve levels of ability over health or light or land, or seas, etc.
All of these channels of power and understanding were created long ago and have their limits and secrets. This is only scratching the surface, btw. (I'll just stop there . . . heh, heh . . .)

Well, people seem to think I am a bit off. Odd, strange, insane, touched, weird, etc. And I am a girl.

I use to refer to people as "that girl with the hair", "that guy with the shoe", "that laughing person", and such instead of using their names. We all know what happens next: what goes around comes around. Someone began referring to me as that weird girl. It stuck. Then someone bought the domain name and gave it to me to create a website. Five years later, I have learned a little about site development and coding. So now I am weird and a geek. That's all.

Like someone else said, I'm always trying to come up with something neat sounding at the last minute and I can never think of anything.

So I stole the name Seafort from a series of sf novels by David Feintuch that I read years ago and always liked. I couple of places I go by Seafort007 (two geek things smashed together!)

Usually I play on some variation of my name, it gets hard to keep track of all these things tho...

Wow, Great responses. Glad I'm not the only one to take from a CCG(Collectable Card Game). A few years back I played Legend of the Five Rings(L5R) based on the Book of Five Rings. Set in feudal Japan with samurai and ninja with magic and demons thrown in for fun. I played mostly the Crab clan which defended the empire from the Hoards of the Shadowlands (demons & undead) The Jade Hand was an item that made smackin' em easier. I also sometimes use Tsukai_Sagasu which was supposed to be japanese for 'Witch Hunter'. I don't know if it actually translates that way. *shrugs*.

Mine is a veiled Transformer reference.

One of my favourite TF characters is Skybyte, the Predacon shark from Robots in Disguise. Like Skybyte, I tend to be somewhat angsty, highly literate (English Major, which around here means English Lit Major), and somewhat clumsy and silly. I'm also known for being really sarcastic/ironic (nothing like the feeling of tellng someone off and watching it fly right over their heads. It's beautiful).

Skybyte's toy was a repaint of the Transmetal Cybershark mold, and "snarky" means sarcastic.

On other forums, I tend to use "Beast"-related words, both 'cause of "Beauty and," and because I'm one of those wierdos who talks to animals.

I'm known as BeastMaster (a type of Jedi who communes with animals --my Star Wars RPG persona, for JK.net), Flying Beastie ('cause I'm still the "BeastMaster" persona, only airborne on XWA.net), and JediBeast (AMV.org, KaZaA).

Well, back along, I started writing fan fictions, and I decided that I wanted a unique nom de plume.
Now, I have an interest in legendary animals (e.g. dragons, griffins etc), and there is one called a manticore. See link for more info on said beastie: http://monsters.monstrous.com/manticore.htm
Anyway, the Greek for it was 'mantikhoras', and I thought 'How'd you pronounce that? Mantichorus, perhaps.'
Later (weeks or months), I was looking at another book, and learnt the old term for a narrator was 'chorus'. The two things linked together, and I decided that it was unique enough for my pen name! Phew.

The other name I use on boards is usually "fsfanatic" cause, I'm a huge (both literally and figuretively) Farscape fan. But I didn't think the Firefly boardies would appreciate that ;) I occasionally use "dolfuns4me" as well, cause I like Dolphins.

pedme is one of the many ways you can spell the Tibetan word for "lotus flower." another way is padme, just like the character in star wars. no doubt the reference is intentional, but that is the most exoteric way to spell the name. if lucas really knew what he was talking about, her name would have been "peme."

i picked it initially because i love myth, and i write, and those two go together, so to use the tibetan word for lotus flower that had also been used in star wars was showing myth that went together with writing (if only to me).

84 is a sacred Jain number, but i've seen it in a Tibetan buddhist text, too, so who knows? maybe it just gets around.

It's Scottish, although I didn't know that when I picked it. See, I thought I made it up. When I was writing a fantasy story, I created a character who was a woman of two worlds, belonging to neither and often had to forgive the frailties and cruelties of men. I liked the name "Channing" and changed it to "Channain" to give it a vaguely elvish sound. I use it for every online e-mail because I don't have to put numbers after it - nobody else has claimed it.

Here's the cool part about it, though. I Googled on "Channain" once and after about eight Firefly entries (go figure ), there was an article about a lake in the Highlands of Scotland by the same name. So maybe it turns out I had an ancestor from that area, once upon a time, who married into the Ferguson Clan (MacFaergis in the Gailic) and the name is actually a genetic memory.

And in case you're wondering, the avatar I'm using is for the sake of the RP "Adventures in Gunrunning." It's actually Jeannette Lee, a RL nine-ball player.

In the end credits of Animaniacs (the best cartoon ever created, the 2nd best TV show behind Firefly), at the end they always do a short scene in the water tower. One of the things they did was Yakko saying "And remember, Yakko spelled backwards is Okkay."

Heh, my screen name derives from my husband hating playing Trivial Pursuit with me, and my tendency to be a smart-alecky know-it-all. My old nickname was Bronwynn, but I (and my husband) just got tired of it after playing several D&D and Neverwinter Nights characters named that. I thought about using Ishtara SittHakim, which is my old character's name in Dark Age of Camelot, and which is a reference to my favorite author Elizabeth Peter's Amelia Peabody mysteries. But once again, I decided to be different. Sometimes you just want to freshen up a little!

I liked David Feintuch's Seafort series until the fourth one. After that it felt a little overdone and like he hadn't planned to take it as far as the publishers did. I don't know. But Seafort was my favorite character in that series.

Well I was a Buffy/Angel fan first so the nickname I usually go with on sites is SlayGal. But I thought I'd do a name change for Firefly and since the whole concept of the show is freedom, that's the name I picked. I like the notion of Mal and the crew being able to fly around without being obligated to do things or being under the thumb of the Alliance.

Also I wanted to use the name of my favorite character but I like the whoel crew so I couldn't pick!

My real-life name has several different meanings, one of them including 'light of God'. Nur means 'light' in Farsi, my fiancees first language. It means the same thing in Arabic but apparently if spelling phonetically from Arabic it should be Nour or Noor (like the Queen of Jordan). Its not a big deal to me since I prefer the Farsi, but the person who told me about the Arabic version was quite adament. Apparently its dreadfully important to remember the difference

I'd guess that the Star Wars character was likely named after the character in Dickson's Dorsai! (or was it Tactics of Mistake?) rather than from the original. Not sure, though!

When I first signed up to hotmail I was trying to think of an address straight off that nobody else would have. My favourite animals are wolves thus the "wolf" bit. The rest.......well I just have no frickin' idea! Just popped in my head that my name could be Jumpy McWolf. and that's what I made for my email.

I still puzzle over it to this day, what could I have been thinking about when I came up with that?

I've been SamuraiX47 since 1995. For you anime fans it is NOT from SamuraiX...

A cpl factors went into the name...

Firstly the Legend of the 47 Samurai or 47 Ronins, the japanese title is Chushingura. A true story of a young brash lord who was provoked into drawing his sword within the Shogun's castle, a ritual-suicide (seppuku) offense. All of the young lord's samurai were now disbanded to wander as lordless Ronin, but they signed a pact to get revenge against the slimy lord who provoked their young lord. After several years of biding their time, they finally met back up and killed the slimy lord. They were all caught and because they showed such strong loyalty to their dead lord they were allowed to commit seppuku. many movies and tv series have been produced telling of their exploits.

Secondly, in my fraternity chapter, we believe that the number 47 is the most common re-occuring random 2-digit number. Whether you want to buy into it or not, I have to tell you that I see it every day. Atleast 2-3 times a day, everyday, when I drive to and from work, the license plate on the car directly infront of me will have 47 in it. I happened to get a numbered parking sticker for my car for work... there's a 47 in it. My ssn has 47 in it twice... There are hundreds of 47 Factoids... like a mosquito has 47 teeth... Apollo 11 was launched on July 16, 1969, 47 days after NBC aired the last episode of Star Trek... And if you do watch ST: TNG or DS9 or Voyager you'll hear 47 used by Data and others when spouting out techno-babble. In Alias, Syd was involved in Project 47. I could go on and on.

Thirdly... the X is to make it sound more Gen-X... it seemed like everything in the 90s had to have X in it... Xtreme, etc.. So Samurai47 became SamuraiX47 which I have registered all over the internet.
