I think we try to decide what system (I prefer Traveler, or task-based), then we try to create the character into numbers. Technically, we should roll dice, but the numbers could be off. So, try to asign numbers on a scale of, oh, 1-6, assuming we're using six-sided die. And, we need more crew. Then there are six different qualities, which might vary from system to system.

We could maybe come up with something kinda like what they do at the Firefly Sock Puppet Theater..

A cross between role playing and fan fiction, each participant takes a character, the group agrees on a scenario, and each player posts a message indicating what they do in the scenario. It's a little more complicated than that, but if we kept it move based and worked together maybe it could happen.

M'kay first here's a running list of who's called dibs on what characters, then a listing of characters still available for anyone who wants to join in on the thread. Then I'll send my move.

We should probably keep this idea small since it's experimental. After all the above roles are taken maybe everyone else can be Reavers or Men in Blue or Alliance operatives or something. Black. Stars in the distance. There's the planet we just left a few hours ago. [just left Patience. Heading for Persephone.] It's early, or late, depending on how ya look at it. I could put the ship on autopilot and go to sleep, and I had done that but Zoe just went to sleep and I ..I may have drank too much coffee.

I thought I heard something a few seconds ago but it was just my imagination. I think. The scanners are clean and the long range is blank. Nobody anywhere near us unless they're black and invisible and not made of metal and very very small.

So far as I know everybody's asleep. I'm just monitoring things up here on the bridge. ..Talking out loud to myself. Which is pretty pathetic. Gorgeous babe in my bed and I'm starin' at vaccum. Maybe I'll check the cortex. Haven't run through my waves in awhile. Might be something new.

You can even use pictures for the characters, although you have to host it offsite.

I think since we're already in this forum it'd be easier to just start something here as opposed to trying to join up in another whole website. If things take off and get bigger than this thread can handle, we can shop around for a new place.

why dont you join the FFSPT? You're already familiar with it and we're always looking for new members.

Granted that what we do isnt move-based, we've been trying to style it more like a show. We have plots, or "episodes" and scenes within each that can be played together and some after-the-fact personal postings. We all try to make them well written.

As far as the characters go, the only way to find out if your desired one is already cast or not is to inquire.

Teela: Just be cryptic and perplexing in your speech and manner and you got her down. Don't worry about doing something wrong cuz we're making up the rules as we go along. Kinda like Calvin Ball.

..WASH'S MOVE

Wash nearly jumps out of his own skin. The dinosaurs fly up in the air and he slips out of the chair to the floor and crawls under the desk.

Beat. Wash looks back and sees River

"Oh!." Wash laughs nervously, "Hi River. I didn't see it was you. Couldn't sleep?" Wash remains under the console and is holding the chair between himself and her. He still appears afraid.

Wash also speaks in a forced whisper so as not to wake the crew, even though they could pretty much scream on the bridge and people in the crew quarters wouldn't hear. Unless of course Wash had accidently turned on an intercom.

By the way, in his shock Wash accidently turned on the intercom to Malcolm's bunk. So Malcolm is now hearing the conversation on the bridge from his room. This happened by sheer accident of course. The others on the ship are still sleeping peacefully but Malcolm's been rudely awoken by a girlie scream and Wash's nervously saying hi to River.

"Beggin' yer pardon, Sir. But why me?" Then Wash points at River, "and why HER? I mean it's pretty blatantly obvious even to her that she's a few udders shy of a cow. And did we learn NOTHING from Niska? Last time you and I teamed up we both got electrocuted and you lost an ear."

Beat.

"Sir."

"Aye aye Cap'n! Keepin' an eye on that planet fall.. thing."

Wash takes the dinosaurs when River offers them back and returns to his seat, "Don't listen to her guys you're not inaccurate. Just small is all." He sets them back down on their place on the console.

Wash does another once over of the scanners and monitoring equiptment, and initiates the autopilot. Looks out the window to the blackness of space. As he's satisfied that the ship's condition is unchanged, on course and safe, he doubletakes at the intercom switch to Malcolm's bedroom and notices it's still on. Since there's nobody there now he switches it back off. Then sighs to himself.

"I think I need more coffee." Wash leaves the bridge with his mug and heads for the kitchen in the commons area of the ship.

Wash has been up all night. Well, actually he's dozed off a few times in his chair but for all intents and purposes it's been a sleepless, but uneventful night. He's presently on his twentieth cup of coffee this morning, and sweating a bit during the landing process. However it goes without a hitch, this being a procedure he could quite literally do in his sleep. Cool and collected, Wash gets the authority for landing, finds their spot, and like an eagle to her nest, Serenity majestically touches ground upon Persephone.

He flicks three switches over his right shoulder as the engines purr into silence, then stands up out of his chair and heads for the doorway. Dark circles are unmistakably under his eyes.

"Sheh-sheh Serenity," he pats a hand lovingly on the doorframe. "Couldn't do it without ya sweetheart." Wash heads off to find his crewmates in the commons area.

(Winks and smiles) (River comes floating into room) MAL:Well River, you get your brother's nod on excursion with us?"(She looks placid and serene, Mal takes this as one of her less psychotic states, but keeps an eye on the sharp cutlery just in case)>

Mainly ship armaments and engine upgrades. Once we get done with this job, I'm anticipatin' some extra credits for capital improvements. (This being a result of close encounters of the Reaver kind). So why don't you and Shepherd Book head out for a look-see on what's available locally?"

Wash gives Mal a weak smile and a wave as he heads for the coffee pot and empties it out into his mug. Then he makes a fresh pot of coffee for the others, takes his own mug back to the table, and sits down. He looks around a bit, and notices that except for River and Mal, he's not seeing anyone else on the ship.

"Where is everybody? They still asleep? Sleep. That sounds like a good idea. I'm just gonna rest my eyes a sec."

Wash rests his head on his arms on the table with the mug of coffee precariously close to his elbow but it doesn't spill as he shoves into it an inch, and promptly begins snoring.

I don't know how much further we can go before others step in to participate. We need Kaylee, Simon, Zoe and Jayne rather immediately.

I should point out too that there's a reason why Serenity is a cargo vessel with no armaments. If Alliance cruisers noticed Serenity was armed, they'd tractor her in and junk her faster than Mal could shake in his booties. It's why they had to use Vera the way they did at the end of the episode Our Mrs. Reynolds. Starship battles are not a prominent part of the series' lore.

yeah, i think we need a casting call for more players. think i,m starting to catch my groove with the playing 'though. disagree about the upgrades. could maybe put some discretely hidden or retractable "surprises" into Serenity. maybe not anti-ship heavy armaments, but something that would give other pirates and reavers second thoughts. better engine like a souped-up hot rod, looking at her you think it's a piece of goh-sa. but in reality she's got real kick!

MAL: (walking through crowded dock area with Wash beside him) Says to Wash: "Sorry to keep you in the dark on the plan for today, but I know you had your hands full with your pilotin' duties, plus I know you're a bit tired. Had Jayne prep some mikes and recievers for the meet. Here's yours (Mal passes equipment to Wash), just so's ya know, Jayne is settin' up top on a rooftop with Vera and an infra-red scope coverin' the front and Zoe is out back with a street howitzer. Now, this is just a precaution in case Badger gets a notion to turn us in to the feds. (Mal continues walking, but pats handle of pistol for reassurance)

Walking further away from Serenity, with his 'piece' on his hip and a growing sensation of anxiety, Wash picks up the pace of his walking and tries to keep up with Mal long enough to be at his side while he's talking rather than two steps behind. This is moderately difficult as Mal appears to be confidently and briskly walking towards Badger's headquarters.

"So Mal mah man what's the game plan? Just you and me against Badger and twenty of his goons? That's good cuz I'm sure I could take out one of their ankles." Wash looks around them, "We left Jayne and Zoe behind."

HUMBLE-We're just experimenting so there are no hard and fast rules on how to do this. You're opting to go in the direction you're going and I'll follow your lead. I do not want to be bossy. However I do wish to caution that you're opting to set a dangerous precedent of being able to describe the actions and placement of characters when they're not being played. Admittedly, I was doing the same thing at the start when I said everyone except you me and River were asleep, but I did that to keep those players out of the roleplaying arena UNTIL someone could come along to claim them. You got Zoe and Jayne awake and ready to shoot at things and we don't even have hands in their puppet heads yet.

Wash decides not to let Mal in on this since in his slumber Mal appears to believe Wash was acting brave and unflinchable. Thank God I can sleep with my eyes open, Wash thinks to himself.

{Also, if I may, if you plan to write this out as a sceenplay or novella, it would be good to identfy and standardize the way we do this.

For example you may notice I am using 'editors' brackets on this post - because this is not in gameplay, more of an editorial.

In other online RPs I have played, they use the standard brackets for actions. Such as - [pulls his pistol and checks the mag]. OR using the astericks - *Turns and snaches the hypo off the table and injects Book in the neck*

Just depends on what the person who is transcripting the RP feels comfortable with.

Also, if there are RPs going on in other threads, should we change the title of this thread to a 'Episode Title' (based on the scenario, of course) of some sort?}

OOC (out of character):

We can keep playing. At this point Wash is taking the ship out of the world and plotting a course to some planet based on coordinates we can assume Mal gave to him. So it'll take at least a day to get where their going. When they get their the plan will be to pick up the weapons and then smuggle them to the outer rim. As Kaylee might say, "easy as lyin'."

So in the meantime any players who still wanna roleplay on board the ship as we wait to arrive there can do so. We don't have to actually arrive at said location until we get more of a complement of crew puppet-master wise. Things don't have to move this quickly. The show's always more interesting when the focus is on character interaction anyhow. We can blow stuff up later.

So can we surmise that both River and Malcolm are turning in for the night, and we'll just say anyone not active is getting rest in their bunk? Would that work for everyone?

I do agree with you that we need to delineate between in character (ICly) and out of character (OOC) behavior. What I've been trying to do since the start is specify what I specifically intend to be Wash's move by notating it as such. Demonstrated below.

Each person's going to come up with their own style and we shouldn't require one specific style that everyone has to abide by. I will bet that once this gets started, others would want to start their own 'adventures' to be able to play other characters.

In addition, I would think that the one who is transcriping and fleshing out the story should be the 'guide' AKA gamemaster/dungeonmaster et al.

As to long threads, I would use the Pt 1, Pt 2 method ... example Badgers Folly, Badgers Folly Pt 2 etc.
