The Wobblies actually come out of an alliance that is not often addressed in History, known amongst the faithful as the "Four Pole Alliance".
Unionists, Anarchists, Socialists AND Communists working together against the robber barons and corporate rapaciousness of the day, culminating in the May Day Riot of 1919.

Eugene Debs, one of the most prominent labor rights organisers, stood up in Canton, Ohio in 1918 and dared speak out publicly against what would soon become World War One.

Under the "Espionage Act" - that day and ages variant of the Patriot Act, he was arrested, stripped of his rights and thrown in prison.
The Four-Pole Alliance went to work, and when all peaceful protest got them was an ass-kicking, some sects upped the ante to sabotage, terrorism and violence, this eventually resulted in the destruction of the Alliance, not that much of it was left after the "Red Scare" and the Palmer Raids anyway.
During this period there was a LOT of public sympathy for them, as witnessed by Eugene Debs and Victor Berger, Debs recieved nearly a million votes for president, even while in prison, and Berger was actually elected, repeatedly, and yet denied his seat, making a tragic mockery of the whole election process.

Between the jailing of Debs and many others, for the crime of excercising their first amendment rights, the refusal to seat Berger, and the use of the military forces of the state to break unions - it became clear to the Alliance that playing nice was not going to work against people who throw the rulebook out the window when they start losing.
The IWW came out of that, in a rather nasty break with Haywood and the Socialists, the IWW decided after the Lawrence Textile Strike, decided it was time to throw the rulebook out too.

And thus turned to violence, sabotage and terrorism as the only effective means left to them, including Galleanist-Anarchists who were very intent on blowing shit up, but historically very bad at it (usually blowing themselves and bystanders to pieces) and eventually settled on industrial sabotage as most effective.
All the while the first "Red Scare" was going on, and in hindsight was more of a corporation-friendly purge of anti-war and labor elements than anything else, and followed by the Taft-Hartley act and a SECOND "Red Scare" purge they were very nearly destroyed as an organisation but held in there through the 1960's and assisted in the Civil Rights movement, and have gradually evolved into the "Iron Fist" of the labor movement, because if it comes to it, the IWW *will* play rough, *will* play dirty, rather than lay down and get walked on when all resistance to corporate dominance is made illegal.

Oh yes, just so that it is noted - the AFL-CIO are not "Friendlies" when it comes right down to it, let's examine the AFL for a moment...
The AFL came out of, in part, an idea of John D. Rockefeller, shortly after his entertaining evening of slaughtering miners in the company town of Ludlow, that the best way to "manage" the threat from unions was to sabotage them internally by helping build and operate their support infrastructure.
In this he found common cause with a scumbag by the name of Samuel Gompers, who more or less pioneered the practice of exploiting a union for personal and political gain rather than using the leadership role to benefit it.
And this all came to a head between 1909-1920
The high point of the AFL's new, more political strategy came during the administration of President Woodrow Wilson (1912–1920), when Gompers and the federation enacted much of their program and enjoyed their greatest influence. During World War I, Wilson appointed Gompers to the Council of National Defense, where he helped mobilize labor support for the war.
In exchange for a cushy political appointment, Gompers sold out union labor cheap, and the AFL started actually BREAKING the strikes of the then-rival IWW, under the polite fiction of patriotism - something blown to powder by Smedley Butler pointing out the sickening profit made by the industries involved.
The AFL-CIO isn't your friend, never was, never will be.

The AFL-CIO, and to much the same degree, the UAW, are company-sponsored Unions to "Manage" your dissent, rather than fight for your rights - never, EVER, forget that.
Especially when they come round with their hand out, for those ever-increasing dues so the union bosses can live high on the hog while snickeringly selling you out to the company in exchange for even MORE money.

Seems to me that Liberals are the scapegoat of the American Right, which is by far the dominante political wing, in both the government and media.
