A Paen to two FF Relationships
Sunday, 03 May 2009 23:00:03

This is an ode to two unusual relationships: the married Wash + Zoe and the not-exactly-anything (cough) Inara...um, um and Mal. Yeah, if you say so. ehem. So as I was saying... ------------------------------------------------ Wash: "Not everybody gets me and Zoe at first." I love that somebody actually showed a loving marriage relationship. On TV. No saccharine, no absurd fits over tiny things.(then again, they live on a spaceship). Joss and co. make characters humanized, not diminished. We're using archetypes here--sometimes I want to aspire to qualities of these characters, not feel better about myself because they're so pathetic. I'll leave that for those "lawyer shows". And the adultery question is dealt with involving a severed ear and a mock proposition that even blows Jayne's mind. Nice. The contrasts in their personalities are played up without seeming oddcoupleish. They just seem so real. Or at the least, very pleasant. I know too pleasant, but hey it's a nice change. And it doesn't seem fakey when he puts an arm around her, or she puts her head on his shoulder. That's a big plus with most all of the characters--very little fakey allowed. Refreshing. ------------------------------------------------- Inara: "You want me.On your ship." Firstly, their interactions have so much audience gag to them. The audience is in on the detail of how their attraction is both impossible and inevitable. It's played with elsewhere(other, inferior shows:)), but it's only shallowly funny there because there's not enough material to keep it going realistically for such a long time. Elsewhere, the ones involved aren't highly complicated people who are kept together and apart for MULTIPLE (and conflicting) reasons: pride, intimacy issues, propriety, custom, culture, stress, upbringing, privacy, physicality, opinionation... So anyway, we've got such a weird mix of love-hate-restraint-yearing happening that it's quite difficult to know where to stand (or fall over, if you just hit your head like Wash :D). From Mal's perspective, you even have a little of the Petrarchan love conventions thrown in...the cruel mistress without the objectification. But don't tell Mal. He doesn't know. From Inara's standpoint, Mal is so beneath her, but unconciously his qualms get to her as well. Neither of them volunteered to get stuck in space with another volunteer. :) Actually, I could go on about the other character relationships...so nice.

All Bloody Things must come to a Head
Monday, 04 May 2009 17:31:08

Well, with three chapters left in Cat's first story, I begin to think about when this thing started. I had a few more readers....which is okay, it kind of went directions that I didn't event think it would, but I am so glad that some of you stayed to ride out this rather odd and crazy wave. The next chapter will be posted soon, and then two more and all will be answered, or at least most. There is still Zeus and the downfall of the Academy and what will become of the marriage between 'Ski and Cat. I am currently working on a sequel with a dear friend co authoring with me, one that will shock and amaze from the first chapter. Things will not go smooth and I promise even more blood than the first. So as I slowly close the door to this fic, I promise you, the last has not been seen of Cat or 'Ski. Plus there is always Angelle's story and that I promise will be around for a while. :)

Just an update.

Just thought I'd drop a note about what's happening with my fics. I've hit a large and rather sturdy wall with Quest. I know what I want to do in the later chapters but right now I'm at a loss to get from where I am to that new part. It will come to me sometime. On another front, I've got about half of the final chapter of Triad done. I should have that ready to go soon... Maybe tomorrow if I'm lucky. I have to say, My New Blood series has taken over my brain. I started the story as challenge to recharge my imagination as I was running out of stories for Allan and the size of the Allanverse is getting a bit hard to work with. I hope to keep New Blood a bit leaner with fewer OC's and more living in the rough and tumble. Also, as a man, writing a lesbian primary OC is a challenge. Both in keeping it clean (I am a guy) and still hitting both the romance points as well as the action. I also got an Idea from a posting in the Forums here about what would have happened if the Independents had won. I may start some work on that after I finish up New Blood. That's it for now. B

Writing and Updates - Again
Tuesday, 05 May 2009 17:47:32

I'm in the middle of finals week here at college. I've written a little bit in my spare time, though I really am looking forward to the summer when I'll have more free time to write. The sequel to "Keeping On" was supposed to be around 15 chapters. But, since I looked over the outline and what I had written so far, I saw that it's really two stories in one and so it's getting cut into two stories. This is a relief for me, certainly. Also, the sequel should be finished relatively soon. I have a little story set in the Keeping On 'Verse that isn't a sequel at all, but fits in. It's called The Serenity Book Club and I kind of love it. Basically it's me making fun of myself and my writing via Simon, Lilah, and probably Mal and Inara in later installments. It's nothing to be taken seriously and I just have fun writing it. :D -GG

You know you're a serious Browncoat when....
Wednesday, 06 May 2009 20:10:33

You know you're a serious Browncoat when your son gets in a situation with an undersized well reinforced bully in high school and you use Badger as an example to explain the bully's behavior. - We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

Is that?...Alan Tudyk?
Thursday, 07 May 2009 01:49:49

So I was in Best Buy yesterday getting my laptop's blu-ray feature fixed so I could watch my lovely blu-ray Serenity again. I went to the Geek Squad counter already chuckling to myself and muttering, "Nerd Herd" under my breath causing my dad to laugh as I carried my laptop and Serenity to show them the issue. Well, the guy who came out to help me was practically identical to Alan Tudyk!! Just a 25 year old version!!! Well, I was a goner. I was blushing and giggling all over the place. And the best part is that he fixed my laptop and asked what movie I was playing on it. So I told him about it and that he should watch Firefly....and I may have blurted out that he looked like Wash. Oh I am such a fangirl...and am seriously considering purposefully messing something up so I can go in and see him again! ^_____^ Just kidding...maybe.

Monday, 11 May 2009 12:17:24

I have been very remiss in not uploading the next chapter/s of JERICHO WELLS in a timely fashion. Basically, I've been trying to get my Castle fanfic completed so I can concentrate back on Firefly, and now that's done (all bar the shouting) I hope to be able to get back on track. Please accept my apologies for the delay, and be assured that there will be fun and games before the week is out. Jane

My Birthday!
Tuesday, 12 May 2009 17:22:32

So my birthday was yesterday...I turned a whopping 2-0!! No longer a teenager and one year away from being able to drink in the States...not that I drink much here in Canada. But guess what I got from my sister and her fiancé? FIREFLY BLU-RAY!!!!! SQUEE!! I am so very very excited about it! The only blu-rays I own are Serenity and now Firefly...so fitting. My friend, the one who is resisting watching Firefly, gave me a ceramic plaque type thingy that she carved the chinese characters for 'Serenity' in. She then painted a very noble brown. I'll post a picture of it tomorrow or the next day cause it is pretty awesome. My mum gave me an enveloppe with 40$ american dollars in it...with instructions that I must purchase a photo op with either Alan Tudyk or Nathan Fillion if they go to Creation's Salute to Serenity/Firefly Con in november. SQUEE! All in all, a very shiny birthday!!

I am really annoyed

Washburn!!!!
Friday, 15 May 2009 00:31:07

Because I am such a dork: I am working in data entry right now for a summer job which is so boring and mind-numbing. But sometimes something happens that brightens my day. Today, I had a donor whose last name was Washburn!! Squee!!!! I was so excited!

I have a Job!
Saturday, 16 May 2009 21:01:31

After 11 1/2 months of unemployment, I will start work in about a week for Green Mountain Concert Services Traffic control division. It's on call, part time but I'll take what I can get. I spent four hours today getting certified to do traffic control. Now all I need is to find a full time position. At least the clouds are starting to have some kind of lining... Brian

When it rains it pours...
Monday, 18 May 2009 18:00:14

After months of nothing... I was hired for a part time job last week and today, I get a call for an interview for a Job I really want. Then I got an e-mail from a buddy who needs a relief driver for the Helicopter company he works for. If I had a Commercial Driver's license, I'd be all over that one. I mean, a job where I can combine three of my previous careers along with paid travel all over the USA? What's not to like? I mean $40 a day per deim, overtime after 8 hours even for travel days, all travel and hotels paid for, driving a one ton truck carrying Jet Fuel (Hence the need for the CDL) Chasing Helitac crews from one forest fire to another... Thing is, I don't have a CDL or the $3,000 I need to get one. Oh well. The interview I'm scheduled combines two of my previous careers. Fire Service and Sales. If I were to get it, I'd be a sales and service tech for a fire extinguisher company. Until Gordy e-mailed me about the Relief Driver slot, The service tech was my first choice. Combined with the Part Time Job I landed (They know I'm still looking for full time work) At least something is going right. Brian

Wii Firefly
Monday, 18 May 2009 18:49:37

So my mum decided to get a Wii for my dad so that he does some exercise. So what do I do? I make Mii (kinda like avatars) of the crew of Serenity! And myself. So when I play baseball in the Wii Sports, my team is the crew of Serenity!! The super funny thing is that Simon is amazing at it and Inara is pretty good too! Mal is awful and Book is always the catcher, and Jayne is good at hitting. BRILLIANT!!!

Bondage?
Tuesday, 19 May 2009 13:58:21

Good morning my fellow browncoaters I’m not into the whole bondage thing but do people have to be bound to watch Firefly? Just doing a little blog updating. About a month ago I’d just finished writing the 3rd chapter of my fan-fic “Hog Haven” then my computer “Crashed”. I will not say what came forth from my mouth at that time. I will say that Shepherd Book would not have been happy with me. Anyway, HOG HAVEN would likely have been a four or five chapter fic if completed. I don’t know that I’ll ever finish it. It may be one that will just have to float around out in the BLACKness of space. I lost everything in that little crash. I rebooted the computer but there was no internet and all my story files were lost. I know, I know the smart thing is to back it all up. I ain’t the smartest fella in the state of Tx, there are four others that share this computer with me but I’m the one that has the most crap on here. Why not call CHUCK and have the Nerd Herd fix the problem you ask? Well that would have been fine only I’m afraid that Casey would have come along and I sure didn’t want to be questioned by the NSA. Course if Chuck would have brought Sarah along then I’d been Ok with that ( a little Chuck humor for fans of the show, like me) Anyway, my older son got the Z family up and running again so we’re back online. Now for some FF business. I’ve been working a lot lately ( lots of overtime) and a co-worker and I were talking about movies. He had “ Hannibal Rising” and “American Gangster” on dvd and said I should watch them. He was really pushing them on me so I complied. They were good and I liked them and returned them to him. We were talking again and I asked if he liked science fiction shows like Star Wars and Star Trek. He said that he did. Well the next thing is obvious. I wanted to introduce him to FF. I explained that it was a space western and he frowned. I brought the series to him the next day and so far he hasn’t made it past the war sequence on the pilot eps without falling asleep ( he’s been working a lot of overtime too) He said he wasn’t sure if he could watch it. I was a little angry with this and told him to at least give it a chance. That’s were we stand as of this writing. We have gotten to a point where we have had some days off. I’ll have to see how thing are when I get back to work. I guess not everyone is recruit-able. Just hope he makes it to the second disc. Z

Hooray for Updates!
Thursday, 21 May 2009 19:34:28

Hello again! Two chapters of "Still Flying" are currently up, and I hope to have the third chapter edited and up within the next week or so. (It's my nit-picky mind that keeps updates more-or-less sporadic.) Thank you to everyone who reviews. :D Chapter 2 features two characters I created: Kyle and Lyle Mendel. (Pronounced MEN-DELL, BTW.) I kind of love the two of them and I'm sure that I'll keep them around in future stories. Another character that is coming up is quite possibly one my favorite things about "Still Flying." I won't go into too much detail, but suffice to say that she's loads of fun. ;) In other news, I saw the new Star Trek movie, and I kind of fell in love with it. I pretty much loved everything about it. I figured that it would be good, but I had no idea just how good it would be. I've been watching Star Trek for as long as I can remember having a tv in my bedroom. I used to watch ST: DS9 (with Benjamin Fucking Sisco) late at night, and then when the network switched it with ST: TNG, I watched that show instead. I'm a huge fan of TNG, and DS9 to a lesser extent. (I pretty much ignore all things Voyager.) I've never really seen the original series, though I do know some of the history and most of the crew members' names. I've seen some griping about ST: 2009 from the 'hardcore' Trekkies, but what I've noticed is that even people who've never seen ST (any incarnation) or who have never wanted to see ST, have enjoyed the movie. That's gotta mean they're doing something right. I loved the various shout-outs to ST fans: Kirk and the Green Chick (Gaila), Scotty's Tribble-in-a-cage, the Red Shirt that Dies, Bone's 'Dammit ______! I'm a surgeon, not a ______!' Those just really kinda made the movie a little extra special for me. As far as the storyline went, I loved it. Time-Space Continuity Issues are nothing new to ST and I thought it was played out in an intelligent manner. I really liked how the focus wasn't just on Kirk, that each of the crew members had a significant part to play. And words will never be able to express how glad I am that Kirk DIDN'T get Uhura. I know some are offended that Uhura even HAS a love interest (something about it making her weaker or defeating the entire point of her character), but I thought it was alright, seeing that she had quite a bit to do in the story and that I feel that the romance thing didn't overshadow hers or Spock's characters or the story. (And I totally ship it. I'm a shipper by nature; I've come to accept that about myself.) I could go on, but I won't. In short, I loved it. I'm going to go back and see it again. When it comes out on DVD, that sucker is MINE. -GG

Fic Updates
Thursday, 21 May 2009 20:52:38

The Plot Bunnies attacked en mass again and I wrote the first chapter of a Firefly crossover fic. It's a crossover between Firefly and The Sarah Conner Chronicles. I just posted the first chapter. I'm still working on new Blood. Just working out a few things after the crew deals with Badger. More Maxine is coming. Quest is on Hiatus until I figure out how to tie things together. There's still a little life left in the "Allanverse" That's it for now. B

Sweet glorious relief!
Friday, 22 May 2009 03:28:09

For the last 5 weeks, I've had some back pain on the order that any sort of activity performed on the vertical plane, such as sitting or standing, was teeth-gritting, cold sweat inducing hell. The kind that pain killers only WISH they could touch, that radiates down the legs along the sciatic nerve and causes muscle cramps in the thighs and calves. Ten hours a day in a not ergonomically friendly chair really didn't help matters. If I had to walk, it was either as a limp or a bowed over shuffle depending on how stiff I currently was, and any trip more than 30 feet my legs pretty much would just give out. Two nights ago, something shifted in my spine, clicked back into place, and the pain has slowly ebbed away. I'm not even cramping in my calves anymore. I find this pretty awesome.

Some other science fiction film ...
Saturday, 23 May 2009 15:21:13

Went to see Star Trek last night, and I have to say it was brilliant, particularly Zachary Quinto as Spock. The ears looked real, too. But what got me the most was the influence of Joss Whedon! Hand-held camera work, flares in the camera lens ... and lots of humour that wouldn't have been amiss on board Serenity. Chris Pine gets beaten up almost as often as Mal! Go see it if you haven't - it's well worth the price of admission.

wow
Saturday, 23 May 2009 22:40:05

so... as of now my bf adam and i have been together a little over 6months... is it bad to think that this could go the distance... hes done so much for me... and he really cares about me... its weird going from a relationship with someone who really has no interest in the relationship to being with someone who just is so dedicated... wow... i wanna be like Zoe and Wash...

where does the time go?
Sunday, 24 May 2009 01:10:15

Four months after my last blog entry and what have I got to show for it? Well, about two pages of fic I think. I'm feeling like it's the end of the road for the storyline. I'm aiming at leaving the possibilities open for the future, but drawing this chapter in the 'verse (sorry.. couldn't resist that one) to a close. I'm not bored with it. I've just apparently been abandoned by the muse and feel like I owe the storyline a nice tidy finish. I'm probably not the only one who feels like it's been wallowing and stalled for a while. Not full of Joss-y goodness and explosions. Anyhoo, we'll see where it takes us and where it ends when we get there. Which may not be any time amazingly soon.

best day ever ha ha ha!!!

UK Browncoats - Nathan Fillion at Collectormania!
Monday, 25 May 2009 12:25:16

Just seen that Nathan is going to be at the Collectormania event in Milton Keynes over the weekend of 5 - 7 June ... I want to go so much! Can I afford to go? Can I not afford to go? Anyone else going? Lots of other great stars there, so check out the website for more details (one of these days I'll get paid for advertising stuff ... but not today!). Same room as Nathan Fillion, breathing the same air ... aah me.

I biked almost four miles today...Yay me!
Monday, 25 May 2009 20:14:21

As you can probably tell from the title, this one's a much happier blog today. I've just extended the range of my thrice weekly bike ride today, to almost four miles, I should be be trimming down in no time now! So, yeah, I'm happy JossIsAGod, The spoiler below is a message to myself, don't feel like you have to read it.
Take that mom and dad!
The Warm and Fuzzies
Tuesday, 26 May 2009 04:33:54

I had an ok day today. Nothing went right, and when I think about anything to do with myself, I still feel very much like luh-sa. Except when I think about how I really helped somebody out today...thus the warm and fuzzies. And I just had to announce this. It makes one hopeful. Shepard may have imprudent hair, but his Book is pretty right on: it is FAR better to give than to receive. Giving and other random acts of kindness are cool. Even if you don't get the warm and fuzzies, THEY certainly will. Pay it forward. Yes, even you, Jayne.

Just checked out our BDH on HULU
Tuesday, 26 May 2009 22:28:52

My god, what a beautiful show. Seriously, seldom do I take the time to sit down any more and just WATCH. Seems like that's something which would come as 2nd nature by now, but as time and life go on,... well. For all that goes on in the real world, it's fun to check back in w/ the 'verse , once in a while. Hell, it's not just fun, it's crucial! That is all.

I'm in

Collectormania - the Cap - update
Friday, 29 May 2009 16:09:32

Okay, I gave in. I'm going to Collectormania next weekend, and have purchased a photo to be taken with our dear Captain! I can't back out now ... Anyone else heading off to Milton Keynes on Saturday 6th June? If so, let me know. Could just meet up for coffee, or a chat, or to drool together. Seriously, I can't wait, even though it means getting up at something like 4.00 in the am. But anything to see Nathan again ...

not dead, just hiding
Friday, 29 May 2009 23:55:30

Not me, at least one of my hens. The brat. I went poking around in the machine shed this morning looking for a couple more hens that have gone missing, when I heard a familiar noise. Cheeping. From under a hen I'd thought dead weeks ago. I am infested with fluffy cuteness! :banghead: PS: I finished the fic and posted it.

From Beyond the Grave
Saturday, 30 May 2009 13:52:01

Hi, you may remember me from such fics as...well, maybe not. Holy crap, has it really been that long? Anyhow, I am still alive. Mostly. But my computer is not. It went crazy and fell asleep, and not in a good way. And then, in a separate incident, my external hard storage got trashed. So. Archived fic gone. All notes gone. Work in progress gone. Novel gone. That face Mal has? In Serenity Valley? Kinda like that. It's taken me a while to recover. And I'm having to start everything from scratch. About five years of research and completed work. But. As you can see from this blog, I now have a new computer. And in the words of Neil Gaiman - '... everything changes. And nothing is truly lost.' Nobody has been sticking needles in my brain (well, not recently anyhow) and somewhere in the funhouse that is my mind, it must all still be in there. Just gotta find it.

KNTR Banner!!! SQUEE!!
Sunday, 31 May 2009 03:19:59

I won!!! I can't believe it! I am so happy I could burst at any moment.
