Senators blast Trump's 'reckless' tariffs, warn of impact on farmers, businesses
WASHINGTON – Republican and Democratic senators expressed rising concern Thursday about the economic impact of President Donald Trump's tariffs, saying they are hearing complaints from dock workers, soybean farmers and manufacturers whose livelihoods depend on trade.
The lawmakers also said they want to see the Trump administration explain the strategy behind the tariffs and what the expectations are for success.
“To my knowledge, not a single person is able to articulate where this is headed, nor what the plans are, nor what the strategy is,” said Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “It seems to be a wake up, ready, fire, aim strategy.”
Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., blasted the tariffs as “a reckless campaign” against U.S. allies and warned that it would drive them “into the arms of our adversaries.”

Trump's trade war is economic suicide
When President Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on steel imports last month, America's largest nail manufacturer had little choice but to raise its prices. Mid Continent Nail Corporation quickly lost 50 percent of its orders as customers opted for cheaper suppliers. Within weeks, the firm had to lay off 60 workers. Up to 200 more might lose their jobs by the end of this month.
If the tariff isn't lifted, the company could fold by September.
Mid Continent and its employees are early victims in Trump's trade war. There will be many more if the president continues to raise import costs and anger our trading partners.

Carmakers are counting the cost of Trump’s “greatest” tariffs—in billions of dollars
Donald Trump’s “America First” policies on trade have spooked investors in some of America’s most prominent manufacturers: the “Big Three” carmakers of GM, Ford, and Chrysler.
GM, the US’s largest carmaker, said today that higher commodity costs (primarily steel and aluminum) would cut deeply into its margins, and so the company lowered its earnings outlook for the rest of the year. Earlier this year, Trump imposed tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum from China, the European Union, Mexico, and Canada to protect the US steel industry from competition on “national security” grounds. Companies that rely on these metals—imported or not—are feeling the pain. For example, GM gets most of its metal from domestic producers, but US steel prices have risen amid the tariffs.

Even NPR has to acknowledge, when doing "background" on the tariffs, that the trade rules are tremendously unbalanced. In their recent piece on Trump's tariffs on EU automobiles, even THEY had to acknowledge that the USA has to pay VAT tax when exporting to the EU while at the same time facing a 25% tariff, while EU autos coming into the USA don't pay any VAT tax and have only a 10% tariff. Similar data on trade with the Chinese.
CLEARLY, THIS IS NOT FAIR TRADE. Whoever negotiated those deals on "our behalf" sure didn't negotiate with AMERICAN INTERESTS at heart! A trade war has been going on for a long time, and "our" negotiators just hoisted the white flag and let everyone else walk all over us.
Because that's how it was supposed to be: In the globalist scheme of things (just ask Bill Clinton, he can describe it for you) each nation had its assigned role. Haitian farmers, for example, were to be displaced by subsidized Arkansas rice. That way they would be moved off their land and Haiti could become food-dependent source of "cheap labor". And Mexican farmers were to be displaced off THEIR land with subsidized American corn, and Mexico could ALSO become a source of "cheap labor". In the meantime, the role of America was to be the world's "No 1 consumer". Every other economy - including China and the EU - were to hitch their "production" wagon to our "consumption" donkey, resulting in a huge hemorrhage of our jobs to overseas locations.
Of course, that required OUR BANKS to issue giant gobs of credit to everyone ... businesses, consumers, the government, foreign investors ... fortunately for us, we held the world's reserve currency/ petrodollar, which gave us a giant U$D-denominated credit card for our worldwide appetite for goods and services. UNFORTUNATELY, the forbearance of the global currency, credit, and banking system for virtually unlimited trade, private, business and government debt would eventually run out.
So here we are ...
45 years after Nixon visited China, took us off the gold standard, and crafted the "petrodollar" deal ...
25 years after Bill Clinton signed Executive Order 12850 freeing up Most Favored Nation terms so that China could continue to operate under a 6% tariff regimen (1), and concluding NAFTA negotiations ...
18 years after George W Bush supported China's accession into the WTO, negotiated approximately a dozen NAFTA-style trade agreements and extending NAFTA to Central America nations (CAFTA) (giving away more USA jobs) (2) and 10 years after he negotiated trade deals with the EU thru the Transatlantic Economic Council ...
Well, here we are: the worlds biggest debtor nation, facing the prospect of an increasingly unwelcome currency. (It's a good thing that We didn't get into the TTP and TTIP, like Obama was pushing for.)
One thing that our fearless leaders chose to ignore is that, in a world of nations, each nation must at some point earn its way if it wants to maintain a viable economy. That means is must be able to independently produce all of the goods and services required to keep its citizens happy, or it must be able to trade - on a balanced basis- for those goods and service that it can't produce. Spending money around the world like a drunken sailor with an unlimited credit card for decades on-end and playing financial games ... as much as it helps out OTHER economies and feels great in the moment for that sailor... is NOT the way to sustainable prosperity.
Trade wars are an ongoing fact of life. If you are trading internationally, you ARE in a trade war. That is the nature of international trade. As far as I can tell, the only difference now is that Trump is willing to put up a fight for the American economy.

The Dow is only up because of the massive inflation that has occurred in the last decade because of quantitative easing. We're in the second longest period of "growth" of GDP in America. If it were to "grow" until the 2020 election, it would be the longest period of "growth" the US has ever seen.
One of the bubbles will burst eventually. When it does, the FED can't lower the rates to below Zero to combat it this time.
I wonder what Stagflation is going to be like.
The only thing I really find funny is people here who put all of this blame on Trump. From what I can see, the only thing Trump is guilty of here is keeping up with the status quo instead of making good on any of his pre-election promises regarding the economy. As soon as he got in all of the sudden the Unemployment numbers were great and the Dow is doing better than ever. He hasn't done a thing to shrink big government. Regarding the economy specifically, we might as well still have Obama in or have voted in a Clinton. The picture wouldn't look any different than it does today.

Huh? "the CBO announced that they were off by $2.95 Trillion" that's almost 3 times the TOTAL projected deficit for 2020, JSF. I too am anxious to see your links for that one. (f*cksake).
"The U.S. budget deficit will surpass $1 trillion by 2020, two years sooner than previously estimated, as tax cuts and spending increases signed by President Donald Trump do little to boost long-term economic growth, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
Spending will exceed revenue by $804 billion in the fiscal year through September, jumping from a projected $563 billion shortfall forecast in June, the non-partisan arm of Congress said in a report Monday. In fiscal 2019, the deficit will reach $981 billion, compared with an earlier projection of $689 billion.
The nation’s budget gap was only set to surpass the trillion-dollar level in fiscal 2022 under CBO’s report last June."

I don't think that cutting taxes in THIS situation will reduce the deficit. The taxes have to be SO high that they are strangling economic growth, and in THIS case what's strangling economic growth is not taxes it's "free trade", internal corruption and wealth inequality. So, I do NOT agree with Trump's tax cut, unless there's something about "repatriation of capital" that I don't understand. When I have more time I'll research it.
Also, the stock market is NOT the economy! The stock market is up because THE FED has held interest rates at near-zero for almost ten years now, and large businesses which issue stock have been busy borrowing money at near-zero interest rates to engage in "stock buybacks" which reduce the number of outstanding shares, artificially increasing the price per share (PE ratio).
A stock market crash CAN bonk the economy (It has done so in the past) due to capital flow (money velocity) grinding to a halt. But the REAL economy consists of production of goods and provision of services; not stock, real estate, or commodity prices or derivatives and hedge funds.
So I wouldn't be crowing about stock prices, if I were a Trump supporter, because (1) it's irrelevant to the real economy and (2) it's not under control of the WH, but under control of The Fed. A rise in interest rates will crash a lot of debt-based speculation, including hedge funds, stocks, and real estate.

Why don't you like Repatriation of Capital?- JSF
1) It's possible to reduce imports into the USA by charging tariffs, and if the tariffs are high enough you can essentially block certain imports. BUT, just because there is a deficit of (say) automobiles in the USA and (because of reduced supply and steady demand) the price goes up from $25,000 to $50,000, altho that represents an investment opportunity, that doesn't necessarily mean that any company will actually step in and invest. Perhaps the total investment is too high, or interest rates are too high, so altho the "environment" might be good, actual investment might not happen.
2) At the same time, if taxes allow profit to remain in the USA, PERHAPS that money would be used for investment.
So possibly between a "push" (availability of money) and a "pull" (demand for product) the right investment would happen to re-industrialize America, but it seems a bit indirect/ uncertain.

Did you miss the news of Apple's Repatriation of Capital, about $380 Billion worth? They contributed something like $38 Billion to Federal Revenue coffers.
Yes, they decided to contribute that much Taxes.
For the CBO stuff, I can't easily do linkies right now.
You can try this: go to this post fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=61505&mid=1056025
If that explanation is not enough for you, check the source data at CBO. They don't make it easy, and their written reports are garbage, hoping you won't notice how badly they lied the last month, every month. Use one of the links in that thread for CBO publications, and change the number to 53651 for the April report, and then 53884 for the May report.
IIRC, you want to look at the numbers at the end of the next decade, and compare. They tried very hard to obfuscate, but the numbers really are there.
Hopefully that gets you what you want.
The figures I posted above and you quoted are from recall and are slightly off, but the figures at the linked post are correct.
The April report is the Fake one, published so they could generate some Fake News headlines. That's the one where they say Tax Reform will add $1.9 Trillion to the Debt, compared to what they had projected previously.
The May report is where they backtracked to the vicinity of reality.
I posted the figures side by side in this post from that thread: 1053414.

BEFORE TRUMP WAS EVEN ELECTED I opined that he would NOT be able to reverse America's economic fortunes, not even in two terms*. The BEST that we could hope for was to pull out of current "free trade" agreements, and avoid future ones, which would dis-empower the USA from being able to make sovereign economic and trade decisions to benefit AMERICA's economy ... a power that we may desperately need in response to the de-dollarization that was already being planned by China, Russia, and (some say) the IMF.

“We have now re-created the condition that led to the last crisis by making it easier to aggregate loans that are not good for investors.”
It is no coincidence that the decline in loan quality has occurred as there’s been a shift in who is doing the lending. Back in 2013, 70 percent of the loans were made by major banks whose lending is closely scrutinized by government bank regulators. That figure is now down to 54 percent, according to Bloomberg, as hedge funds, private-equity firms, insurance companies and non-regulated lenders have entered the market in a big way. This shift in market share away from banks mirrors what happened to mortgage lending in the run-up to the 2008 crash, when competition from unregulated lenders led banks to lower lending standards in an effort to maintain their market share.
There’s also been a shift in how the loans are being used. Some of the debt is being used, as it always has been, to finance expansion or refinance old debt. But more recently, a growing portion of leveraged lending has been used to buy back stock, pay special dividends to private-equity firms cashing out of their investments or to finance richly priced mergers and acquisitions, which are now running at a pace that exceeds the bubbles of 2000 and 2007. In other words, it has been used to reward investors rather than grow the business.
The mergers and acquisitions are particularly troublesome. According to Covenant Review, a debt analyst, the amount of debt used to finance these takeover deals has grown significantly, from 6.4 times cash flow in 2015 to 7.7 times cash flow in the first quarter of this year. Moreover, analysts warn that as much as 30 percent of that expected cash flow might never materialize because of overly rosy assumptions about cost savings and revenue growth. A slowdown in the economy or a rise in interest rates could very well put those companies in a cash squeeze, e.g. bankruptcy.
Although financial regulators have taken notice of the increased volume and declining quality of corporate credit, they haven’t done much to discourage it — just the opposite, in fact.
Earlier this year, after complaints from banks and dealmakers reached sympathetic ears in the Trump administration, the newly installed chairman of the Federal Reserve and the Comptroller of the Currency Office declared that previous “guidance” against lending to companies whose debt exceeded six times their annual cash flow should not be taken as a hard and fast rule.

"Junk loans" have been with us for over five years. The conditions weren't "suddenly" created in the past year, they were re-created under OBAMA's reign. The student loan crisis. The auto loan disaster. The real estate loan crisis-to-be. The stock plunge and the hedge fund crisis ... people have been warning about these for (literally) years. Where have you been living lately? Certainly not in the USA!
To be fair, this is because of The Fed keeping interest rates at near-zero for years and years, which encouraged speculative bubbles and improvident borrowing. Sarbanes-Oxley encouraged the avoidance of traditional lending and promoted SHADOW BANKS. (BTW: NOT TRUMP'S FAULT). Blaming Trump for the upcoming disaster (which people including myself have been predicting for a while) is like blaming Obama for the Great Recession. This upcoming crisis? Not Obama's fault (directly, altho he CAN be blamed for the Fed Char appointment) and not Trump's either; look to The Fed and its monetary policy.

"There's No Way To Make This Work" Martenson Warns "A Big Reset Is Locked In"
Futurist and economic researcher Chris Martenson says we are not at the end of a business cycle but “. . . at the end of a credit cycle.”
Martenson warns,
“Here’s why people need to be concerned. Credit cycles, when they blow up, are really, really destructive..."
"2008 to 2009 was very destructive. Instead of realizing the error of their ways, they went for a third. This is the most comprehensive credit cycle that we have seen. Remember, bubbles have two things that they need. Number one, a good story that people can believe in and, of course, it’s a false story. Number two, ample credit. That’s what the Fed and central banks of Japan and Europe have done. They just flooded the world with credit. Now, we have bubbles everywhere. When these burst, it will be the worst bursting in anybody’s lifetime because we have never seen anything like this.”
Martenson says a debt reset is locked in, and somebody is going to pay.
“When you have as much debt that the United States has... the overall debt level in the United States, including auto loans, mortgages, consumer debt, student loans and corporate debt and whatever, we’re sitting at about $60 trillion right now. It’s a huge number, and when you get to this level of indebtedness, plus those unfunded or underfunded liabilities
Quote:
... when you get to this level of indebtedness, there is really only one question left to be resolved, and that is who is going to eat the losses. That’s it.
So, when you start asking that question, the banks and people writing the laws are pretty sure they are not going to take the losses. The person relying on the pension is the person that is going to eat the losses. . . . There is no way to make this work. Here’s where the social tension comes in. Even as ordinary middle class people are being destroyed in this process, the rich are taking more and more out of the system. That is courtesy of the policies of the Federal Reserve...
But the big risk is when these printing sprees, these credit cycles finally burst. They are wildly destructive. They are fast. They are hard. They are sharp and they hurt.”
Martenson says people can protect themselves with real assets as opposed to paper assets. Martenson says,
“Real assets are the place you need to be if and when a paper tower comes crumbling down. I am diversified myself. I believe in land. I believe in real estate. I believe in gold. I believe in silver. I believe in other metals. I believe in these hard assets because this is where we are going to have to hide out because if you held hard assets in Turkey, in Venezuela, in Argentina and in places where the currency collapsed and declined, these would have been great places to be hiding out...
When this worm turns, it’s going to be a lot faster than it has in the past. There is no free lunch, and if you can see that, there is a wealth transfer coming. The wealth transfer is going to have a bright red line, and people are going to get trapped on the side where they hold paper claims, and the people that are going to preserve their wealth are going to be on the other side of the line with their wealth tied up in real things. That’s the period of history that is about to unfold.”
Chris Martenson added this ominous statement: “We are one sinking of an aircraft carrier away from the U.S. dollar being revealed as a fraud.”

The city calls itself the “RV Capital of the World” — more than 80 percent of the vehicles sold in the United States are made in the area of Elkhart, Indiana, according to the RV Industry Association — and Mr. Trump’s tariffs on imported steel and aluminum are increasing costs, diminishing demand and causing concern that a 10-year boom cycle could be waning.
Shipments of motor homes were down 18.7 percent in June compared with a year ago, and shipments of smaller trailers and campers were down 10.5 percent, according to the RV Industry Association.
Some companies have cut back to four-day workweeks. Amid strong job gains nationally, hints of rising wages and solid overall economic growth, Elkhart’s health is decidedly ambiguous.
“I think it’s a yellow light,” said Richard Curtin, a University of Michigan economist who is a consultant to the R.V. industry. “Depending on how things evolve in six months, it could be a red light, getting to the end of the expansion.”
Dan Holtz, the county Republican chairman, says blaming the drop-off of sales on higher tariffs was “myopically political.” Mr. Trump is using the tariffs as a negotiating tactic.
Mike Yoder, a Republican and an Elkhart County commissioner, said that was far too charitable. “My perspective is our folks in Washington are not being honest. There is no plan. This is a very dangerous way to negotiate a trade deal. Folks like people in Elkhart are going to suffer.”

U.S. imports hit all-time high, trade deficit with China sets new record despite tariffs
The trade deficit with China set a new record despite U.S. tariffs meant to punish the country for what the U.S. considers unfair trade practices.
The U.S. trade deficit added up to almost $447 billion in the first nine months of 2018. That compared to about $404.5 billion in the same span in 2017.
The U.S. is on track to post its biggest deficit in a decade.

The U.S. is on track to post its biggest deficit in a decade.
Trump’s America First economic policies are designed to shrink the US trade deficit. But according to Janet Yellen, the former chair of the Federal Reserve, the deficit is on track to get bigger by the end of 2018.
Speaking at a conference in Beijing, Janet Yellen said that the steady rise in US interest rates is pushing up the value of the dollar, which will likely cause the US trade gap to widen further.
www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-11-13/yellen-says-fed-more-to-bla

Trump has so far focused on confronting what his administration deems unfair trade practices, erecting trade barriers against countries like China — ostensibly to offset the benefits of these tactics, or possibly to compel the countries to abandon the practices (the administration has never made its rationale all that clear). In her remarks in Beijing today, Yellen offered an implicit rebuke of this logic.
“I do not see unfair trade practices in China, or anywhere else in the world, as what is responsible for the US trade deficit,” said Yellen. “The US trade deficit reflects the fact that Americans spend more than we produce, and we import excess goods and services from the rest of the world to satisfy that demand.”
In other words, other factors influence America’s trade balance more than Chinese protectionism or China’s "unfair" trade practices. Ironically enough, the president’s fiscal stimulus is widening the deficit. The combination of tax cuts and increased spending has juiced demand. And since it takes time for domestic businesses to expand to meet said demand, imports have surged at a faster pace than exports. Beyond that, though, the trade balance reflects the fundamentals of an economy. To shrink the trade gap, Trump’s policies need to encourage a higher rate of savings. But his tax cuts and budgets policies are doing just the opposite. Instead of investing in America, Americans are buying things that don’t sustain long-term growth — consumer goods made in China, for instance.

Can anybody dig up the post where Second says that there will be no recovery during the next crash because the FED hasn't raised interest rates and they can't be lowered anymore this time?
I'm not saying that either that idea or this one right here is wrong even. Just figured we should have both sides of the interest rate story here so we could have a good laugh about how it's all Trump's fault.
Cause, yanno... everything is Trump's fault.

US trade deficit with China grows to a record and it’s likely even worse than the data shows.
China’s trade surplus with the U.S. — closely watched amid a bitter trade dispute between the two countries — grew 17 percent from a year ago to hit $323.32 billion in 2018. That’s the highest on record. The deficit that the U.S. has with China is likely even bigger since China calculates the numbers by excluding goods that end up in the U.S. via other countries.

The "disaster" occurred in stages, beginning with Nixon and his visit to China, and continuing thru Bush I, Clinton, Bush II, and Obama, as their policies progressively "offshored" manufacturing in favor of financial speculation as a source of profit.
Can Trump reverse the disaster?
Not even in three terms as President. In order to grow manufacturing at home, he would need to do far more than tariff imports and give tax cuts to corporations, "hoping" that they would invest that money in factories instead of stock buybacks. He would need to cut out the Fed and the banks, and DIRECTLY provide loans and credits to critical manufacturing facililties, and he would need to do this over at least 15 years ... because you can't reverse 40 years of depredation in a dozen years.
What he HAS done is call attention to this very important problem. Hopefully, other politicians and pundits will start paying attention, too, and start crafting policies to reverse our decay.

Chinese Trade Official Laughs Out Loud at Trump
It all started when Trump was asked a question about how long he thought that the so-called memorandums of understanding would last in an agreement with China. Earlier reports noted negotiators have been writing up several MOUs in key areas that would make up the outline of a larger deal. It was an easy enough question but Trump decided to suddenly expound on his feelings about MOUs in general.
“I don’t like MOUs because they don’t mean anything. To me they don’t mean anything. I think you’re better off just going into a document. I was never … a fan of an MOU,” Trump said. It could have ended there but Lighthizer decided to jump in and although he didn’t look directly at the president, it certainly looked like he was contradicting his boss. “An MOU is a binding agreement between two people,” he said. “It’s detailed. It covers everything in great detail. It’s a legal term. It’s a contract.”
Trump looked annoyed as Lighthizer was talking and as soon as he was done, he said that Lighthizer's words were meaningless to Trump. “By the way, I disagree,” Trump told reporters and the gathered Chinese delegation. It was at that point that Vice Premier Liu He, the top Chinese negotiator, laughed out loud. “I think that a Memorandum of Understanding is not a contract to the extent that we want,” Trump said. “We’re doing a Memorandum of Understanding that will be put into a final contract, I assume. But to me the final contract is really the thing, Bob, and I think you mean that too.” And then he went on to note that “the real question” was “how long will it take to put that into a final binding contract?”
This appeared to be the latest instance of Trump seemingly being more worried about how an agreement was marketed than what it actually contained. It happened last year as well, when Trump was responsible for pushing a name change to the North American Free Trade Agreement, known as Nafta, to the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.

Lighthizer's an idiot.
Not only is it "A MOU", not "An MOU", but his definition is comically exactly the opposite of reality when he says “An MOU is a binding agreement between two people,” he said. “It’s detailed. It covers everything in great detail. It’s a legal term. It’s a contract.”

Quote:6ixStringJack, the negotiation moved on without you: Lighthizer eventually ended up realizing there was no point in fighting the issue and made it clear the term MOU would no longer be part of the negotiations. “From now on we’re not using the word memorandum of understanding anymore. We’re going to use the term trade agreement, all right?” Lighthizer said.

“OK,” the Chinese vice premier replied.
“Assuming you decide on an agreement … it’ll be a trade agreement between the United States and China,” Lighthizer told Trump directly. The boss was pleased.
“Good,” Trump said. “I like that much better.”

6ixStringJack, you have got to remember that the negotiation is being done in two languages, not all English. And if the Chinese don't want to use the term MOU in the same way as investopedia uses MOU, then the Chinese will find another term to cover the idea that one part of the treaty, of a multipart treaty, is set in concrete and the negotiators don't talk about it anymore because they have agreed, even though other parts of the treaty are still being negotiated.
The concept is completely alien to a guy like Trump. Once the Trumps of the World make an agreement, they feel perfectly free to change anything they please. Nothing is ever set in concrete for a Trump. Everything is fluid. Which is why the Trumps of the World cannot be trusted to keep an agreement, even after they sign. Instead, the Trumps of the World go to court to bend things. Or they just plain cheat and lie.

That's fine. I'm not speaking of the whole issue and facts that you brought up after my post.
Lighthizer was wrong. Dead wrong.
The entire article that Daniel Politi wrote was predicated on the erroneous belief that Lighthizer was correct when he said that.

So, because his entire premise was bullshit, the summary statement he wrapped the article up with is bullshit.
Politi is an idiot too.
I'll refrain from calling you an idiot as well for posting the article. I have my suspicions that you were smart enough to know that this was bullshit, but you posted it anyways because you know that most of the people here are stupid enough to buy it.

6ix, the NAFTA renegotiations began on August 16, 2017. President Trump appointed U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to represent the United States. That is the same Lighthizer negotiating with China. You might look at that USMCA deal before forming an opinion about Lighthizer's knowledge, Nafta, China, negotiating in general (how it is done, what is possible), Trump's trade policy (less imports, more exports, and Trump thinks he can decrease imports without decreasing exports. He cannot).

Shanghai stocks just had their best day in more than three years after comments from the leaders of China and the United States brought investors piling back into the market.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite (SHCOMP) leaped 5.6% on Monday, its biggest daily percentage gain since July 2015, according to Reuters. That lifted it into a bull market, which is defined as a rise of at least 20% from a recent low.
Some of the encouragement came from US President Donald Trump, who announced that he'll delay a major tariff hike on Chinese exports . . .
The US government was due to hike tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods from 10% to 25% on March 2 if the two sides were unable to reach a deal before then. Trump didn't specify what the new deadline for raising tariffs would be . . .

Trump was not specific about anything other than whenever the next time he has a meeting with Xi, it would take place at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Trump has no idea of what he will be doing, but he will be doing it in Florida.

Experts were asked what Trump really wants from his trade deal with China; the most popular answer was “tweetable deliveries.”
Sure enough, Trump has been crowing about what he portrays as big Chinese concessions, which all seem to involve China’s government ordering companies to buy U.S. agricultural products. In particular, the postponement of the trade war came after a Chinese pledge to buy 10 million tons of soybeans. This will please farmers.
What China is offering doesn’t at all get at the real U.S. national interests at stake, other than farming. But it does give Trump something to tweet about.

Now that I think of it, Trump said the National Debt would get smaller and smaller. It is getting bigger and bigger, faster and faster. Trump is a disaster if you look at his numbers rather than listen to the sound of his voice.

Will Robert Lighthizer restrain Donald Trump’s impulse to take a headline-grabbing and self-defeating China deal? On Monday, Trump crowed to a White House gathering of the nation’s governors that “we’re going to have another summit, we’re going to have a signing summit, which is even better, so hopefully we can get that completed, but we’re getting very, very close.” The more Trump trumpets success before true game-changing progress has been agreed to, however, the more he creates pressure for a bad deal, and the more he undercuts his own negotiators.
Ever since China was admitted to the World Trade Organization in 2001, the trade imbalance between the United States and China has become more and more lopsided. In 2001, the deficit stood at $83 billion. In 2017, it reached $375 billion. Rather than moving toward a more open economy, as enthusiasts of WTO membership predicted, China has intensified its policies of state-led capitalism and protectionism. Combined with its outright technology theft, these policies have enabled China to achieve domination in industry after industry, with grave economic and geopolitical consequences for the U.S.
Robert Lighthizer, the U.S. trade representative, aims to change that. He is dead serious about using America’s economic and political leverage to reset the U.S.-China relationship.
There’s only one person who can undermine what Lighthizer is trying to achieve. That would be Donald Trump. Why? Because in the next few days or weeks, Trump is looking for a quick deal that gives him bragging rights, while Lighthizer is playing a long game for systemic change. The president’s predictably failed summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, as he comes home to face the aftermath of the Michael Cohen hearings, only increases the pressure for a successful “signing summit” on trade with China’s Xi Jinping.
Should that happen, it will be a stunning defeat for America. To date, says China journalist and scholar James Mann, “Lighthizer has been the driving force in persuading Trump not to take deals that would generate headlines but not alter China’s system.” It will take something close to a miracle for Lighthizer to prevail again this time.

“I am a Tariff Man,” said Trump.
He also claimed that foreigners pay the tariffs he has been imposing.
Now, that last claim is something you can test. The results?
Foreigners paid approximately none of the bill.
U.S. companies and consumers paid all of it.
And the losses to U.S. consumers exceeded the revenue from the new tariffs, so the tariffs made America poorer overall.
Over the course of 2018 Trump imposed tariffs on about 12 percent of total U.S. imports, and many of those tariffs have been in effect long enough that we can get a first read on their consequences.
On Saturday economists from Columbia, Princeton, and the New York Federal Reserve released a paper, “The impact of the 2018 trade war on U.S. prices and welfare,” that used detailed import data to assess the tariffs’ impact. (The paper, by the way, is a beautiful piece of work.)
www.princeton.edu/~reddings/papers/CEPR-DP13564.pdf
How did they get this result? The U.S. government collects data on the prices and quantities of many categories of imports. Many of these categories faced new tariffs, but many others didn’t. So you can compare what happened to the tariffed imports to the de facto control group of untouched imports; this tells you the impact of the tariffs.
Under Trump’s vision, in which foreigners would have paid the tariffs, what you would have expected to see is falling prices for tariffed goods, offsetting the tariff, so that consumer prices didn’t change. What you actually see, however, is no visible effect of the tariffs on import prices. So foreign suppliers don’t seem to have absorbed any of the tariffs, which were fully passed on to consumers; tariff-inclusive prices (Figure 3, page 28 of the paper) have risen by the full amounts of the tariffs.
A simplified explanation of the paper’s conclusion that the tariffs have made America poorer is here:
www.nytimes.com/2019/03/03/opinion/how-goes-the-trade-war.html
By the way, in practice any manufacturing jobs added by the Trump tariffs are probably offset by losses of other manufacturing jobs.
Beyond that, the tariffs have probably contributed to a rising dollar, which makes U.S. exports less competitive.

The Trump administration’s trade war with China has turned out to be a windfall for Mexico.
Mexico has seen gains in shipments to the U.S. in categories in which competing Chinese goods were hit with tariffs. In all, U.S. imports of goods from Mexico surged to almost $350 billion last year, the fastest growth in seven years. That helped widen the U.S. trade deficit with Mexico by 15% to more than $80 billion, while our trade deficit with China increased by only 12%.
Mexico’s gain is evident across a diverse span of sectors. After the U.S. levied tariffs on metal ores and their byproducts, Mexico’s exports to the U.S. more than doubled, while China’s sank by a quarter.
The trade war also made the U.S. more reliant on produce from Mexico, already the biggest source of vegetables such as cauliflower, carrots and onions. In one stark example, imports of peeled garlic cloves from China sank by almost a quarter after receiving tariffs, while Mexican exports rose 54%.
I’m sure that soon Trump will sign a fabulous new deal with China that will make this all seem like peanuts. After all, trade wars are so easy to win—or so I’ve heard.

Trump’s China trade war is (mostly) pro-business
The China trade debate today is different from the one of 10 or 20 years ago, when labor unions were asking for protection against competition with low-wage Chinese labor. The point of getting tough on China, in those days, was to save American jobs from outsourcing by applying tariffs that would raise the cost of Chinese-made goods and thus discourage American companies from relying on Chinese factories for production.
Over the past five years, however, the China argument has shifted subtly.
Today, under Trump, the United States is primarily asking the Chinese government to enact policy changes that will make it easier for American companies to outsource jobs to China. That includes cracking down on Chinese theft of American intellectual property, paring back regulations that force Americans to form joint ventures with Chinese companies in order to do business there, and ending “forced technology transfer” policies that make American companies hand over valuable knowhow in order to gain access to the Chinese market.
It’s true that the tool Trump is using to try to get these concessions — tariffs — is the same as what labor was asking for in the mid-aughts. But the Trump administration’s policy goal isn’t to keep these tariffs in place to protect American jobs. It’s to remove the tariffs in exchange for the Chinese agreeing to make China a friendlier place for American companies to do business.
This agenda has sparked some backlash from the business community — especially from the farm lobby — because it’s bad for Americans who are heavily involved in exporting to China. But big business writ large is comfortable with this form of confronting China because it mostly serves to advance their interests. The fact that this trade war is easily confused for the kind of old-style populist protectionism that they oppose is, to big business, a feature rather than a bug. Trump is mobilizing anti-trade sentiments that corporate America worries about on behalf of an agenda that corporate America mostly supports.

Quote:House Republicans will likely remain as House Republican-y as ever, doing whatever Trump tells them to do and forcing a smile while they do it, but Senate Republicans, just about to a person, are apoplectic over the tariff proposal, which would start at 5 percent on all goods and increase each month until Mexico solves America’s immigration issues. The White House, in an effort that senators definitely interpreted as a slight, sent a couple of hapless lawyers to Senate Republicans’ Tuesday luncheon to field their questions about the policy. (The actual meaningful people in the administration were busy traipsing around England in silly little jackets.)

The lawyers were given a proper scorching. Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford said that the administration “is trying to use tariffs to solve every problem but HIV and climate change.” Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson told them that they would have trouble voting to sustain the president’s veto of a measure blocking the tariff. And Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, whose state would be particularly hard hit by the broad tariff on its neighbor, told the lawyers that he wanted them to take a message back to the White House: that they “didn’t hear a single yes” from the conference in support of the tariff.

I keep wondering when the trade war disaster is going to happen.
I'm not an ostrich. The US and global economies have been set up for a repeat meltdown because none of the problems of 2008 were fixed. And the current economic system is unsustainable at many levels.
But from the current state of affairs, Trump has been proved right about needing a wall, and not proved wrong in is approach to unsustainable trade practices.
Anyone care to guess a DATE where Trump's trade war becomes a real (as opposed to imaginary - ie 'fake news') disaster? I'll be happy to put it in the predictions thread for you.
And if democrats don't do anything different, how are they any better?

The differences between Clinton’s NAFTA — which Trump called the worst trade deal ever — and the Trump’s USMCA — of which Trump is very, very, very proud indeed: GREATEST TRADE DEAL EVER!! MAKES AMERICA GREAT!!!! — are either:
(a) trivial,
(b) parts of the Trump-nuked Trans-Pacific Partnership, or
(c) changes in auto parts rules of origin that are not on the manufacturers’ wish list and are not really on the United Auto Workers’ wish-list either.
How did this happen? Nobody can figure why Trump claims victory.
This has been Trump’s best strategy from the start: do something trivial and then market the hell out of it. Sure, there’s not much difference between NAFTA and New NAFTA, but there’s not much difference between Tide and New Tide, either. So what? It’s almost an axiom of marketing that success has no correlation with the actual quality of the product being sold.
Even Trump is probably smart enough to know that he can’t actually solve any of the problems he campaigned on. But he doesn’t care. He just needs something, anything, that allows him to claim victory.

Well, great for you then.
My only question is, if it's going so awesome for you, what the fuck do you care?
Don't bother answering, idiot. It goes without saying, but because I'm talking to somebody with a low double digit IQ I'll point out that it was rhetorical.

Quote:6ix, lots of insults, but there no sign that you understand what is wrong with Trump's trade war. Mexico and the US agreed on border policies months before Trump’s tariff threat. Trump made the tariff threat for show. After taking the economy hostage, Trump gloated about backing down on Mexican tariffs. Trump was just counting on Mexico surrendering for the greater good, like the real mother in the Judgment of Solomon, rather than see innocent people suffer at the hands of a sociopath.

6ix, there is also no sign that you understand what is wrong with a 600-lb person. Or 300 pounder. There are a hundred million Americans that are not freakishly large enough to deserve a TV episode, but they are making the same mistakes as the 600 pounders. The TV show makes it perfectly clear that these people need to, and can, fix their own problems before they have surgery. Surgery only makes it easier for the problem to stay fixed for the rest of their lives. The typical Republican needs to stop being stupid about who is causing their personal problem: it is not the government -- it is themselves. 6ix, the Federal government can't fix you even if Trump is reelected.

Unlike you, I don't lie to everybody about the circumstances in my life. I'm pretty much an open book in these parts.
I'm doing just fine. Don't worry about me. Feel free to read about it in the garden and rain thread. You're welcome to join us in conversation there if you can behave like a human being for five minutes before you post there.

Letters sent from prison by the former Irish mob boss detailed his love for President Donald Trump and annoyance at the Mueller probe.
The former mob boss said he enjoys Trump's war against the media and that the President has his vote in the next election.
James "Whitey" Bulger wrote on a number of topics ranging from the first lady to the news media to Trump's foreign policy efforts.
“History may show Trump was the man of the hour,” Bulger wrote. “Feel China respects him and hesitant to try to bully him.”
Bulger also talked about Mueller, who led the FBI at a time when rogue agents had protected mob bosses like Bulger.
"Trump is experiencing what Mueller and company can orchestrate," Bulger said last September. "[Mueller] should observe biblical saying - 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.'"

Quote:6ix, interestingly, Whitey Bulger's fellow prisoners beat him to death. I wonder why? Could it have something to do with Trump? I often wonder why no one in Indiana has beaten you to death. Is it because you hide inside most of the time with no contact on the outside?

More likely it's because Indiana is a state that always votes a Republican for president.
You'll actually find that almost the entire country does outside of large cities.
But I do take your meaning though. Wacko left wing extremists are extremely violent people, and Trump Derangement Syndrome hasn't been making them any nicer these last few years.
If you ever feel the urge to leave your cows roaming free and fly out to Indiana and give it a try yourself though, I'm your Huckleberry.

Quote:Yes, 6ix, the Republicans will remain in control of the Federal government by the design of the Founding Fathers, slaveholders Washington, Jefferson and Madison. California’s 40 million people get two senators, while two Senators also represent states like Wyoming (578,000 people), Vermont (626,000 people), and Alaska (737,000 people). The 8 senators from California, Texas, Florida, and New York represented more people than the 68 senators from the smallest 34 states, which includes Indiana. It was a very clever design which has made the Federal government not a Democracy ruled by the majority. 68 Senators is a veto proof number that can do/stop pretty much whatever they please, leaving the majority of Americans out of luck at the Federal level of government.

Quote:The closest I every came to Indiana is a month at the Marathon refinery in Canton Ohio. My impression was that the entire state was rusty iron and cracked concrete, but long work days in January didn't leave much time for sightseeing. I think Ohio needed to rebuild their man-made world and do it right this time instead of cheap. Rebuilding would create a lot of jobs and prosperity, but the Republican controlled states won't start until the Federal government provides free money from the larger and more successful economies like California and Texas. I doubt that will happen so long as Republicans are in a position to veto it in the Senate.

Trump recently negotiated a trade deal with Mexico — a deal barely different from NAFTA, which Trump had called the “worst in history”. The whole point of trade deals is that they’re supposed to provide some certainty. The USMCA, like NAFTA, amounts to a promise by all three participants that they won’t arbitrarily impose new barriers to cross-border trade.
Then Trump went ahead and threatened major new tariffs on Mexico, not because it had violated its trade agreements, but because he didn’t like something that was happening on the border, a situation that has nothing to do with trade policy. So the USMCA appears, in practice, to be a solemn promise by the U.S. government not to impose tariffs on Mexican products … unless it feels like it.
And then, after all the dire warnings of what would happen if Mexico didn’t give Trump what he wanted, Trump appears to have backed down in return for a declaration that Mexico will do pretty much exactly what it had already promised to do before the threats: www.nytimes.com/2019/06/08/us/politics/trump-mexico-deal-tariffs.html
Now, the business world is extremely pleased that the trade war appears to have been called off. But it does look as if a Trump threat is worth about as much as a Trump promise: There’s no particular reason to believe that he’ll actually go through with it.
The only thing we can be sure of is that whatever happens, Trump will claim to have achieved a great victory: Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
MEXICO HAS AGREED TO IMMEDIATELY BEGIN BUYING LARGE QUANTITIES OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT FROM OUR GREAT PATRIOT FARMERS!

In the case of the Mexican standoff, this may not seem too bad. But think about what it means when foreign leaders know that the President is:
(a) gullible
(b) easily susceptible to flattery and
(c) eager to proclaim victory, and unwilling to admit that he didn’t actually get anything significant.
Basically, this turns America into a systematic chump. Hold a summit, flatter Trump’s vanity, let him issue a communique claiming vast achievement, then go on doing whatever you wanted to do. Just ask North Korea’s Kim, who snookered Trump into thinking he’d made major concessions, went right back to building up his nuclear attack capacity, and still gets praised by Trump as our allies watch in horror.

I keep looking for the trade war disaster that 'Crunchy as a brick' posted about, that presumably happened sometime before Wednesday, July 25, 2018 2:35 PM. Where is it?
Or maybe our champion farter can tell us all when it's supposed to happen in the future rl, instead of in Crunchy's fevered imagination. But despite looking very, very closely for that precious OT prediction, all I find are more farts from the farter ... about everything BUT the actual topic.
How about it, farter? Any predictions when this trade war disaster is supposed to unfold?
And if democrats don't do anything different, how are they any better?
