I just found out about this because I haven't watched Letterman since the 90's.

Utterly disgusting. Not only has Letterman sunk to a new low, he should be taken off the air for this travesty.
Way to go Letterman. If talking about a 14 year old girl getting "knocked up" turns your screw then I guess it's time for you to retire.

I happened to catch Letterman the other night for the first time in years. Four of his top 10 list were slaps at conservatives and immediately after, to the delight of the audience, he brought out Paris Hilton. Somehow that seemed to say it all about Letterman and his fans.

I think maybe it says something about you and others who make the leap to ASSUMING Letterman was talking about sex with a 14-year-old girl. To me, the connection is pretty clear: Palin has a daughter who's already been knocked up.

And bear in mind that her outrage and indignation are completely phony. Remember, this is the woman who signed off on billing rape victims for gathering evidence against their rapists. She never seemed very concerned about rape or underage sex before; it looks like she's desperate for something to keep her in the public eye. Apparently her appearance at the latest GOP fundraiser didn't go very well, since they didn't let her speak. Lucky them.

Yeah, I was misinformed by the media. They are still spinning this thing as though Letterman was talking about Palin's 14 year old daughter.

Letterman can say whatever he wants. If he had indeed been talking about the younger daughter, then I feel he should have faced some consequences.
I'm all for freedom of speech, but Sometimes a boneheaded comment can cost you your job. Remember the Imus incident? You can say what you want in America, but you have to expect to pay for your words if they offend anyone.

Although I have been corrected on this matter I am not in the wrong for starting this thread.

I simply stated what I had witnessed on the news channels(including FOX news). They said Letterman's remark was aimed at a 14 year old girl. That's what I responded to. I didn't assume anything other than what the news channels were giving me.

Letterman was cracking off at Palin who attended a ball game in NY with her 14 year old daughter. Letterman made his wisecrack about the daughter with her, hence the 14 year old was the target, if you interpret his comments as said.

He shouldn't have used the joke at all, as it was in poor taste. Whoever wrote the joke for him, should have checked to see who was with her.

Truth is, Letterman has fallen a long way, and he needs to appeal to someone to get his ratings up, so he takes pot shots at someone like Palin to do it, since most of his followers are Palin haters.

Palin herself is a public figure, and that means she's fair game. It just goes with the territory. But it's shameful that so many have fallen so far to include children.

But that's just me.

After I posted this, I saw an article where Letterman's ratings are up over the Tonight Show, since Conan the Librarian took over the helm. Seems like all Letterman needed was a bigger loser than he is to compete against,

Letterman, my fellow Americans, is a comedy-late-night-host. This is a man who makes fun of celebrities, the rich and powerful, politicians, sports figures, even other TV hosts; hell, he even makes fun of himself.

How can anyone take what he says seriously. Okay, he told a crude joke that was blown out of proportion by Fox News and other media outlets. Letterman is known for his often crude humor and sometimes he goes too far. But that's his job, to push the envelope.

I remember listening to Howard Stern on the radio one day and he made an off-color remark about Puerto Ricans. It was stupid, crude and juvenile - Howard Stern's shtick. He said that whoever did not like his brand of humor should change the channel. He did not apologize. Was he an A-No.1 A-hole, YES! But he's raking in millions doing his thing. Does it make it right? NO!

But there you are. I don't condone Letterman's remark because I have nieces, sisters and my mom.
The only difference is my family members are not in the spotlight. Here's the thing though, I don't care. I rarely watch his show, and when he says something dumb I say "Well, that's Dave" and move on. BTW this is giving him a boost in the ratings because people are talking about it.

He's laughing all the way to the bank.

I'm just saying.

Myself, I would like for Palin to go on the record about this if only to clear things up. Silence, as Rue says, points out a lot about people.

At any rate, I don't think this is such a terribly big deal. I didn't realize she was at the game with her 14 yr old daughter so the joke made sense, but it was in bad taste no matter how you look at it. Whether or not we should just shrug it off and say that's his job is questionable because that seems to be the way of the world anymore. Comedians are always looking for ways to push the envelope and sometimes the only way to do that is to push further and further into the areas of bad taste.

Palin's main reason for being in NY was to walk in a charity event for sick kids, and Letterman saw an opportunity to once again attack her family, this time with a vile rape joke. I'm sure all 18-year old girls out there would consider being raped by ARod a real hoot. Not to mention the characterization of Palin as " a slutty flight attendant." I'm sure all flight attendants think of themselves that way too.

I just watched Letterman's apology on Huffingtonpost.com (just to avoid any claims of partisanship, mind you ). And I'll say this:
#1 - Letterman vehemently states that he'd never imply such a thing about a 14 yr. old girl. The problem is that in context Palin was at the game with her 14 yr. old daughter, so yes, the implication was there. Maybe not intentional, but it was there.
#2 - He seems to shrug most of it off on the trials and tribulations of having a talk show. Boo-hoo. First, let me say, I was a huge fan of Letterman in the 80's and 90's. I watched him nightly. I stopped for some reason, but I do think he's a funny guy. But really. He and his writers couldn't come up with ANYTHING else to make a joke about? Knowing the joke was in bad taste (to which he openly admits)?
#3 - Despite the furor his jokes made the first time, he repeats them. For a cheap laugh. Much to the enjoyment of the audience who laugh and clap at them . . . again.

So, really, I don't think the apology was 100% authentic.

Strangely enough, and this is a desire I can't really reconcile with my distrust of the American government, I actually kind of want England's health care system. I've only heard one out of maybe twenty people complain about it.

Of course, I strongly suspect that it just isn't going to work here in America. Any time either party tries to introduce an idea that would improve the quality of life within our borders, it's either shouted down or muddled so much, bogged down with loopholes, pork barrel, and sabotage that the resulting bills are worthless. Clearly the insurance companies, pharamceuticals, and HMOs are ripping us off, but expecting the GOVERNMENT to fix it? Ha.

I also have the impression that the English have different perspectives and priorities on privacy issues... So even though THEY like it, a similar system may feel invasive to many Americans. Just can't win.

No one is debating the actual quote, Rue. I believe it's about the taste in which the joke was told if you take it in context. Palin was at the game with her 14 year old daughter. So, in context, Letterman is implying (again, purposefully or not) that A-Rod knocked up Willow, not Bristol. That's a little bit in bad taste, dontchathink? But seeing as how most people only think of Bristol as being promiscuous, that's how the writer's thought it would be taken . . . except they didn't think that Sarah Palin might get a little upset about it because it was her 14 yr. old daughter with her at the game. I think her anger is justified a little bit.

I put a lot of focus on the community, in how everyone has some intrinsic worth, and how people do better both progressively and emotionally when they help each other, as opposed to isolationism. I like the idea of breaking down the walls between people. I think measurements of economic worth (class and hierarchy) are just another means of dividing one person from another, and that hurts everybody, because that breeds desensitization, a lack of empathy, and crime. It enables corruption.

But I'm not sure how far you can go making private property community owned. On one hand even though private property and materialism can be a motivating factor for progress, it's an empty one. On the other, you start taking about forcibly taking from people because they should SHARE it, and you start treading dangerous ground.

Ah, but that's the beauty of it, nestled in there quite firmly is something called the Non-Aggression Principle, as in never *forcing* anyone to do anything - to do otherwise violates the whole concept and reduces it all to "meet the new boss, same as the old boss", and many folk like me are just plain damn tired of that little game.

It's why I don't get on well with a lot of other Anarchists though, see, the whole "throw down the established order" concept is not only completely moronic, it's hypocritical, and you cannot FORCE an ideology on folk who don't want it, nor should you!

If it worked at all, it'd wind up like Biafra, Somalia, Haiti, just mad chaos and a whirlwind of violence as new factions scrabbled for power.

We don't need to throw down the established order, just outgrow any need or want for it, cause the whole of their power rests upon the fools that take their orders - without which the "powers that be" are in fact utterly powerless.

In short, the essence of this form of Anarchism is "And I should listen to you, exactly... why ?"

On the other hand, realistically you DO have people who take the orders and cling to the masters leg not out of fear, dependance or ignorance, but out of malice, greed, and hatred of their fellow man, and entirely by their own choice, hell, look at the obvious gleeful sadism of most agents of the established order, from obstructive bureaucrats who enjoy lording their power over you, to police who laugh as they abuse you, to the happy shiny faces of our "troops" (which I do NOT support) as they torture and murder...

Those beings, in my eyes, have voluntarily surrendered any claim to humanity, to personhood, because to have it at all is to respect that of others and in their sociopathic selfs there is not, and never will be, any such thing - I don't need to dehumanise them, they've done so to themselves, of their own free will, chosen to become what they are.

The Enemy.

As such, I have absolutely zero regard for them as people cause they're no such thing, they could be - if they wanted to, but they preferred and actively chose savagery, at which point they become just an obstacle, worthy of no more regard than a piece of litter you shove out of the way in order to continue your journey.

Although, knowing as much history as I do, when those powers that be DO fall to earth, it's gonna be less than pleasant for em - about all they can hope for it that it'll be quick, yanno ?

Not that I feel exactly sorry for em and all, but one of the things we've prepared for is trying to limit the carnage of WHEN that happens so that it don't become a feeding frenzy and cause more needless destruction than needs be.

Nice to see this site is status quo.
It's not like this thread was started to bash Obama. This thread was a swipe at a late night talk show host who showed terrible judgment. But because Letterman's quip was regarding the Palin family, we have the usual suspects rushing to his defence. Even though most of you probably don't even watch the show.
We have Signy digging up quotes from 'conservatives' playing the old but he said card as if that somehow lessens the poor taste of this 'joke'.
We have Rue come out of retirement to stand up for Letterman because he said something derogatory about the Palin's.
We have Kwicko bringing up McCain quotes as if that has anything to do with the topic at hand. Once again, because McCain called Chelsea ugly, it is okay for Letterman to joke about getting a 14 year old girl knocked up. Doesn't fly with me, besides, Signy already beat you to it.
We find Mr. Isall arguing that it is okay because Sarah Palin was once duped by some radio comedians. She wasn't the first nor will she be the last one to fall for that particular prank. But I guess that means she is a simpleton who must be mocked along with her family.

I guess if we all just agreed that Letterman showed bad judgment, this would have been a very short thread.

It's amazing. Here we have a second rate comedian (sorry, if he was first rate, he wouldn't have to work everynight) who makes a stupid joke in poor taste about a failed VICE PRESIDENTAL candidate. Palin should get upset, she's a mom. I am the father of girls and I empathise. Letterman screwed up what could have been a sincere apology because he makes people laugh for a living and couldn't pass up the laugh. Surprise, surprise, he is not rocket scientist. What is everyone else's excuse? This is one or the reasons I disconnected cable.

Well, the reason I brought them up is because they DO have something to do with the topic at hand. Palin has said that jokes about rape are unacceptable, and jokes about a candidate's family and children are unacceptable, and both are off-limits.

Palin says she's outraged by WHAT was said, but her claim is proven to be a lie by the mere fact that even after McCain said these things, she still CHOSE to be his running mate. She didn't put the feelings of women, rape victims, or young girls at the forefront of her mind when she chose to stand by McCain and try to paint him as some kind of "hero". Clearly her outrage isn't with WHAT was said, so much as WHO said it (Letterman, who had previously savaged McCain for stiffing him and no-showing on him) and WHO it was aimed at (her family instead of Hillary's).

Any claim otherwise is just so much horseshit.

Actually its not. The Felony Murder statute applies. Killing someone, even accidently, while committing or attempting to commit another felony is still Agg Murder in Ohio.
