Some Covid-19 thoughts

Not particularly.
Let's take JACK, for example.
The bookseller is trying to tell everyone "The Russian army is 20 miles away and marching towards the village to attack it! We need to be prepared!!!!".
Another character says - "No such thing. Go home everybody. Don't worry. Be happy".
That's JACK. He's not JUST ignoring it, he's denying there's even a problem and that it needs to be addressed.
You may feel somewhat remote from the US crisis, Brenda, and that it's not a big deal here, for 3 reasons:
1) Canada did a better job protecting its citizens, and so now it doesn't have a similar the death toll, case-load, and crisis on its hands compared to the US. Here in LACounty, for example, test positivity rates are at 10%. That means that, on average, roughly 1 in 10 people I rub elbows with are infected when I'm out and about doing what I need to do.
Canada overall now has 15 new cases every day per 100,000 people, the US has 64, more than 4X your number. (Not 4% more, 4 TIMES.)
And so your risk there is not nearly what it is here.
2) Everybody in Canada has healthcare, unlike the US where many people are uninsured, many don't get any medical care at all their entire lives (except when they visit the county ER or visit a free county clinic), and where even the insured always face bankrupting medical costs from a serious illness (unless they're independently wealthy). People are coming into this crisis with unaddressed comorbidities, and really worry about having to go to the hospital if they get sick enough, and ruining their family's entire financial future.
3) Canada has a consolidated enough, large enough medical system that can ramp up services to handle case loads, unlike the US which is for-profit, and operated on a shoestring in private, siloed domains. Excess capacity cuts profits. And only small-scale investments are made. And they're almost never compatible with anyone else.
There is no 'ramp up' spare capacity. There is no 'cooperative' capacity with everybody running their small, hand-crafted systems. So testing LABORATORIES can't keep up. And hospitals across the country are running out of beds, especially ICU beds. And of course, staffing across the country is the biggest issue. When COVID-19 was isolated like in NYC, people could be 'borrowed' from 'somewhere'. But now, there's no 'somewhere' to 'borrow' from.
Here in my home town, the local community hospital has all of 8 ICU beds - and of last report, 7 are filled with COVID-19 cases. TECHNICALLY the ICU is less than 90% occupied. And hey! - that doesn't sound so bad, does it? It has more than 10% to spare!
But that is one and only one bed. God forbid someone has a heart attack and another person gets in a serious enough car accident - or too many critical COVID-19 cases come in at the same time. Somebody is not going to get the ICU bed they need.
