The DNC might orchestrate it just to pull Bernie off the campaign trail. I wouldn't put it past them. Especially since Warren is no longer collateral damage they're concerned about since she's doing so poorly. We'd likely end up with a Trump vs. Bloomberg match-up in November after Trump gets acquitted for the 2nd time in a row.

BTW... if you haven't been tracking it, the betting odds for Trump show he's a favorite now both for the Electoral College (65.9% implied probability) as well as the Popular Vote (61.5% implied probability).

These numbers have been steadily rising for the last six months since I've been tracking them, and they will likely go even further in his favor as a final Democrat candidate emerges and turns off everybody else in the party that didn't get what they wanted.

Have you already forgotten Trump’s Covid-19 statement which should have stopped every American cold: "The president of the United States calls the shots. [The states] can't do anything without the approval of the president of the United States."

There was more: "When somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total and that's the way it's got to be. ... It's total. The governors know that."

But by Tuesday, after a day of pushback from governors, he was alternately trying to walk back his previous comments and spin them.

He told reporters he would "be authorizing each individual governor of each individual state to implement a reopening -- and a very powerful opening plan -- of their state at a time and in a manner as most appropriate." Later, he said, "I'm not putting any pressure on the governors." Sure. Other than telling them he had total authority over them, no pressure at all.

And how did Republicans, who typically trumpet state's rights, respond to his toothless power grab Monday? Most stayed silent. If Trump was impeached over what he said, GOP Senators would refuse to punish him, except for GOP Senator Mitt Romney.

And I'll state again that my own Republican Governor said two weeks ago that Indiana decides when Indiana goes back to work and Trump doesn't.

Trump should remain silent on the issue and in two weeks everybody will forget it happened. If he does force the issue, it will end up in the Supreme Court where it will be voted down 9 to 0 and he will lose, and we all will lose in November.

Every voter should know that, at a time when hospitals, cities and states cried out for help with the pandemic, the president’s allies in Congress tossed a $195 billion lifeline in the direction of Trump, Kushner and other rich people who needed it the least.

Now, with the federal and state governments planning an easing of lockdowns—or as the Trump administration puts it “Opening Up America Again”—it’s perhaps also the right moment to pay attention to the president’s unprecedented secrecy about his finances.

If the Supreme Court decides after its historic telephonic oral arguments on May 4 that Trump doesn’t have the right to hide his taxes and financial records, contrary to his claims, the third parties subpoenaed over their dealings with Trump will turn the records over, they say. Whitehouse said the documentation could potentially clarify the extent to which Trump will personally benefit from the costly tax clauses in the CARES Act.

“We already know about massive conflicts of interest for the president, whether it’s foreign dignitaries staying at his hotels or shunting military planes to Scotland to steer business to his resorts,” the senator said. “Seeing the president’s full financial records would show us much more, like whether these provisions will pad the Trump family’s bottom line.”

We write to request communications and other information pertaining to the Trump administration's advocacy for two tax provisions included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (PL 116-136). These provisions are Title 2, Subtitle C:

SEC. 2303. MODIFICATIONS FOR NET OPERATING LOSSES; and

SEC. 2304. MODIFICATION OF LIMITATION ON LOSSES FOR TAXPAYERS OTHER THAN CORPORATIONS.

As you know, the 2017 tax law (PL 115-97) changed the way non-corporate taxpayers can carry losses from a given year to minimize their tax bills in other years. Beginning in tax year 2018, taxpayers filing jointly could only use $500,000 in losses from actively-managed investments, like pass-through income from businesses, to offset wage or capital gains income. For example, if one spouse owns a company that had a $5 million loss in 2018 and the other spouse made $5 million from stock market investments, this limitation meant that the couple's taxable income was $4.5 million (not zero, if the loss were allowed to fully cancel out the income). The other $4.5 million in losses, however, could be carried forward to use in future years.

PL 115-97 included another change that prohibits corporate and non-corporate taxpayers from carrying losses back in time. Before this change, a taxpayer that incurred a big loss in a given year could retroactively amend prior tax returns (going back up to five years) to use the losses to cancel out income, and thus to receive tax refunds. The 2017 law allowed losses to be carried forward indefinitely to future years but also limited the amount of income losses can offset to 80% of taxable income in a given year. Thus, a taxpayer with $10 million in income would still have at least $2 million in taxable income, regardless of losses.

Sections 2303 and 2304 effectively suspend these changes for tax years 2018 through 2020. Following passage of this legislation, the Joint C

We can’t write these tweets off as just hyperbole or political banter. And these tweets aren’t protected free speech. Although generally advocating for the use of force or violation of law is protected (as hard to conceive as that may be when the statements are made by someone in a position of public trust, like the president of the United States), the Supreme Court has previously articulated that where such advocacy is “inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action,” it loses its First Amendment protection. The president’s tweets — unabashedly using the current crisis to encourage a backlash against lawful and expert-recommended public health measures, falsely claiming a Second Amendment “siege” and calling for insurrection against elected leaders — have no place in our public discourse and enjoy no protection under our Constitution.
