Prompts 21 through 40 of the Joss100 challenge. Main focus is Kaylee. Still undecided whether to take this in the Silee or Jaylee route.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the story, it really helped me to try and get the ball rolling on this story. I hope people like this part, I had a lot of trouble writing it and I was nervous about posting it still. Anywhere, here you go. Please be gentle.<p><p><p><p><p><p>21. Lonely<p><p>Kaylee felt the body fall against her. The dead weight of the man toppled her to the floor, the body on top of her. The weight was suddenly gone and Jayne pulled her to her feet. He looked her over quickly, checking to see if she was hurt. Other than being scared out of her head, she was fine. Footsteps echoed through the corridor above them. Jayne looked to her, the turned and grabbed Vera from the wall. He pulled himself up the ladder and out of his bunk. Kaylee held her breath until she heard gun fire. <p><p>She backed herself to Jayne’s bed, pulling herself into a dark corner and sitting down. She drew her knees up to her chest and tried not to look at the dead body that was sprawled on the floor. She hoped Jayne had been careful, hoped he had surprised that other man and not the other way around. There were more gun shots and Kaylee buried her head in her arms. Jayne would come down the ladder any minute. Come down so she couldn’t be alone no more.<p><p>~*~*~*~*~*~*~<p><p>22. Hunger<p><p>Jayne did one more pass around the ship, looking for any stowaways hiding until they thought his guard was down. Very interesting set of stories. I'm very much liking it so far. I won't bother to give ya my pref for who Kaylee ends up with, I've already done it :)
Simon does need to get that foot out of his mouth though...I rather like that he got shot....but then I really like to hurt my favorite characters too:)

Loving this. Keep it coming. Few people can do the Simon Foot-mouth-syndrome well and have it be funny and angsty at the same time. Well done.

Hey, like wow! Funny, thrilling, angsy...you have it all! I laughed through the scene where Zoe and Wash tell everyone they're expecting. I could see Wash mouthing "we're pregnant" and I loved how the chain of command is redefined with the baby on the way.
The action part was good and when I saw "Death" I was really worried!

Very good set of short stories. Though some don't like bringing back past enemies, I think adding Niska is great. He is still out there and seeing him want revenge is fantastic.
Your ideas are good and the stories flow very well, but I would recommend a beta reader for spelling.
Looking forward to more.

Very, very good set of stories here. Love it. I vote to have a Silee thing... but ya'll knew that anywho. Either way, its your fic, and I'll love readin' it either way ya go. I love that you had Simon save Kaylee. Its so... well, its somethin' I woulda done, cuz I loves to put our BDH's through Hell (And more!!!!)

You know, it's most likely wishful thinking on my part, but I swear I'm seeing a Jaylee slant to this series. It's a troubled, angsty, up-hill slant, but a slant nonetheless.

Very, very nice - well written, what's a few spelling mistakes between friends, right? :) I like the way you give equal play to both sides of the Simon/Kaylee/Jayne triangle, but I'm really rooting for Jayne. I think he and Kaylee have more in common in the long run, and that they understand each other better. But however you do it, please update soon!!
