author's note: Okay so I know what some of you might be thinking. Uh...Dani...don't you have five billion OTHER stories you should be working on? LOL yes I do...and actually I have been working on them, I have started at least a page for each, if not more, I just have to let my muse guide me though. I haven't been super into writing lately and I'm not sure why. Anyhow, most of this was already written. Infact I only added about 2 pages. This was written back in March and I only recently found it. I think it got put on the back burner because I used the idea for another story of mine, Pulled Apart. I'm leaving what I used for another story in, so if it sounds familar...well that is why. But hell, I wrote the dang thing and I didn't even remember LOL. Anywho, my point? There is some familar stuff here but I am taking it in a different direction I did with Pulled Apart. Squish_67 looked over some of this, I just recently added the rest. Enjoy (I hope). Mal watched in awe as the argument unfolded in front of him. If he could have made a sign at that moment that said, ‘This is why I don’t like shipboard romances,’ and hang it over Kaylee and Simon’s neck, he would have. ‘Course he didn’t so he just watched with quiet interest, wondering how far things would go this time.

"You don’t make no sense, Simon! Lots a people got responsibilities, River is gettin’ better. I’m just startin’ to think you don’t much like me," Kaylee said with an aggravated groan.

This is a very interesting start - but why do I feel like Jared isn't exactly as he seems ... plus, I have a bit of a problem with Kaylee going off and sleeping with the first warm body she could find - make out, maybe, but sex, I'm not so sure that's totally Kaylee ... however, I really like the start of this and I would die to see Simon fight her her affections. I loved his moment with River when she told him she was mad - now if River could just convince him that he needs to be happy and not hover over her so much, things would be right and shiny.

Keep going so we can see how it all unfolds ...

Its only implied that she had sex. Kaylee never says she did nor do I write it in there. Simon's observation of her implies it. Not saying it happened or didn't happen just yet ;D

Great story, I'm hooked already. Hope this goes down the Simon/Kaylee path.
Also i really loved the little part with the blue surgical gloves.

Post movie I don't think River needs so much help as you're implying here but, that's simply a difference of opinion, and serves your purpose of having Simon push Kaylee away.

It's certainly an intriguing start.

As do I, but, Mordsith is writing this, it'll probably end up being Jayne/Kaylee.

Actually, I have no intentions at all of making this Jaylee. It was either gonna be kaylee/omc or kaylee/simon. But we'll see.

And there isn't really a whole lot to go off how bad off River is post Miranda. A few minutes of the movie, that's it. She is better, I will agree, but how much better and how much attention she needs is something that can only be guessed at. For this, she is better, but still needs a lot of attention. That is just my personal views on it. Everyone is different though.

Don't hate the non-cannon love ;D. I write lots of other non-jaylee stuff.

Well now...this certainly sets up an interesting scenario, Mordsith. Kaylee and Simon are on the outs (though they seemingly have managed to find the wisdom to make an attempt at staying friends) and Kaylee's met a guy who seems much more in tune with her personality and needs. Now why does this seem to scream "hidden problems?"

Really can't wait to see where you take this, Dani. I mean...really can't think of a situation where Kaylee doesn't end up with either one of the male BDHs, or either Inara or River in another fanfic. Having her actually explore a relationship with someone not on the crew will certainly make things mighty fun for the crew, especially Simon and Jayne (whom you show here as being emotionally capable of caring for Kaylee);)

I liked this. The characters rang true, and the conflict between Simon and Kaylee was very believable. I liked that you didn't let us in on exactly what Kaylee did with Jared. I think bringing in an OC, as long as they're written right, can be a good way to explore a character's personality and motives, and this was done well. I'll be interested to see where this goes.
