Inara had left Kaylee’s side while she still slept, gently smoothing her hair and headed towards her shuttle. Maybe some rest would bring new light to her thoughts. Upon entering, she slipped off her shoes and crawled back into the rumpled sheets she had not made from the night before. Her eyelids were heavy, and her lashes fluttered against her cheeks as sleep came to a listless body.

He couldn't keep his eyes off of her. She even slept with grace. He had barged into her shuttle unannounced and looking for a fight when he stumbled upon the sleeping beauty before him. He didn’t know what to do with himself. She stirred up a fire in his belly, twisted it in knots, but her face brought a peace to his soul, something he hadn’t felt for a long while.

This morning she had been the epitomy of what drove him crazy. The cold ice princess that wandered through the ship, leaving a frost in her wake. She had dismissed his genuine effort at an intimate moment when they had found out that Kaylee and Simon had named their daughter after her. It had darkened his mood instantly, she had that affect on him. But now here she was and something inside him told him not to leave. It told him to pull her into his arms, make the leap and not look back. Yet he couldn’t. She had her world, and he his. What made it all so unbearable was that he had a creeping suspicion that they were doomed.
