“Ow.” Simon bent forward, hand clutching his face where it had made unpleasant contact with Kaylee’s chin. In the quieter moments, he’d spent a reasonable amount of time imagining himself and Kaylee face to face, facing each other, parts of their faces touching. Sometimes he allowed himself to think about touching other parts of her as well. Of course, his nostrils hadn’t been gushing blood in those scenarios. He’d been coy and suave. He’d beguiled her with his witty repertoire. She hadn’t been hovering over him in a blood-stained green nightie, trying to push bits of tissue paper up his nose.

“Aw, honey.” She leaned in, trying to assess the damage.

“I’m okay. Really, it’s not that—”

“Sweetie, you’re bleedin’ everywhere. Let me take your shirt off.” He wasn’t sure if that look on her face was guilt or amusement as her hands moved up his torso, dragging the material with her.

“Ow, ouch.” The collar of his shirt caught painfully as she tried to raise it over his head. He wondered vaguely what would kill him first: the humiliation of bleeding all over her bed or utter mortification at the way his body was responding to the touch of her fingers on his bare chest.

“You just lay back here ‘gainst the pillows. That better?”

“Oh, yes. The pain’s gone now. It’s a miracle.” He met her eyes, watched her blink at him in a baffled sort of way. “I—I didn’t mean…it’s not your fault. I was just trying to be…funny. Forget it.”

Kaylee smiled, set his ruined shirt aside.

“Zoe was right. You do get awful ironical when you’re cranky.”

Inara stared up at the roof of her shuttle, listening to Mal breathe beside her, close enough to feel the heat from his body bounce off hers. She was inches away from his shoulder, a hand’s reach from his hair. How far away were his lips?

“Inara—”

“Mal, you’ve been through something terrible.” The words poured from her lips, quick, nearly tripping in their rush to get out. “You’re not well. You’re saying things without thinking them throu

great! loved it. great vernacular and characterizations. my only critisism would be to downplay the
"mals brain gets all befuddled with inara around" its such a powerful statement the reader only needs to hear/read it once and we keep remembering it ourselves. let the subtext work for you. keep up the good work.

"Simon sat down on Kaylee’s bed, stretching his arms back behind him. 'What are we supposed to do now?'

Kaylee shrugged, pure wide-eyed innocence. 'Play doctor?'"

Loved it! Had to bite my lip to keep from laughing to loud at that part :) Super-duper goodness, more please!

You are a bad man - Mal and Inara almost had a moment, and you had to go and have Wash dash it! Great story, and I'd love to see more. For example, a sequel where they can work through some issues...

But, but, but....

Now what? What happens next? Is it still cold? Does Mal find 'Nara cryin'? Does Zoe get eaten by a dinosaur? Do the Reavers turn and come after them?

And then what??

Can we please ask Jayne to knock Mal & Inara's heads together?
I mean, it seemed to have worked for Simon... And speaking of Simon -

“Oh, forgive me, Captain. Going by your attire, I assumed the dress code was on the casual side this evening. I wouldn’t want to offend your delicate sensibilities by—”

I just love it when he gets sarcastic!

I think Mal should put the ship on autopilot and go back to Inara before she can convince herself that having more than a moment with him was a big mistake. All the crew sounded very in character and I loved Simon's comment to Mal about the dress code. Now if he could just take a hint from Kaylee... Ali D :~)
You can't take the sky from me

Damn, the Mal and Inara scene on the bed was HOT!

Great story, absolutely hilarious!

I can just see Kaylee playing the innocent to seduce the hell out of Simon. I think she'd normally just grab the guy, but Simon throws her.

I love how it ended, but really didn't. Us Browncoats are suckers for that.
