I always make her cry.
This is never my intention. Not my way. I want her smiling slyly at me, hooded dusk eyes and jeweled lips. I want her to laugh as she enfolds me, a bright thing of joy in us both. I want: her.
Here is what happens.
We kiss, deeply, my hands framing her skin, her lips tasting of unknown spices. Her mouth blossoms, her tongue, and my hands around her throat clench, push her away. "What's wrong?" she asks, her eyes too large, her lips perfect shining red still, as always, as when they draw the others in, as when they make promises they intend to keep. "How'd they teach you to do that?" I demand, my own voice unrecognizable. "Did you practice on each other? Did they show you with pictures, or just kinda describe it?" "Mal, what are you talking about?" she asks, but she knows. We both know.
We lay on her bed, her limbs golden against the crimson silk. Her hands discover nerves I didn't know I had. My fingers tight around her wrists, pushing them into the mattress. Leaving bruises. "Don't do that," I hiss, and her arms go slack. "Not like you do to them." I lean in to kiss her but her head turns, my mouth falls awkwardly on the hollow under her cheek bone. Her lips press together, tight and unsure.
They open, later, as she breathes her pleasure in and out. Noises catching in her throat, are drawn carefully out, one after another. I think it is the best sound I have ever heard, the sound she makes as her eyelashes flutter and her hips arch, the open asking sound of her freedom. And then I think, she made this sound for them too. They would want that, some of them, would want to think she was there by choice, that she was enjoying herself, and she would oblige, she was good at what she did. So these sounds, false or true, must have come before, must have been coveted in times past as I covet them now. I move over her, my mouth swallowing sounds before they reach the air, but that only reminds me of other things. "Shh," I whisper, my teeth on the shell of her ear. "Shh." She does not
I was thinking it was gonna be another "Mal once again decides to shoot his mouth off at Inara when they could making out, thereby killing the moment entirely" moment, but this....this is something I can picture being written by Joss...something with layers that will have an impact down the road, when no expects it too.
I don't think I've ever seen words more powerful and fitting.
great job!

Thank you for putting this into words.
Digging for something untouched and just not getting that he's stripping away everything that is Inara, creating himself a hollow shell. Killing what he has because he can't trust it's real.
This hurts really bad, but it's wonderful.
Great title as well.
agree with rinny...no more powerful words

Just to address some of the issues brought up by Ali - I don't think this is going to make sense outside of my head, but I kind of think of the rape as being of Mal as well - not by Inara, but by himself, his own insecurity and jealousy and need to possess. The word "rape" does conjure very violent connotations but I was trying to use it in a more... metaphorical way, I guess. Not to imply he was actually hurting her physically, but that it became one-sided because (as someone else said much better than I could) in digging for something untouched he's stripping away everything that is Inara. Which brings me to the victim thing - I agree Inara is not a victim, and I was trying/hoping to show how this happened little by little, so that she tries to accomodate, and tries to respond, but by going along with it at all ends up caught as much as he is - where to draw the line? And even though I don't think she's ashamed of what she is, I think in this situation she could become a little confused or unsure - what part of her (especially in terms of sex) is not a Companion? - and that could contribute to her letting this happen.
Or, just as likely, she would tell him to go have sex with a blow up doll, if that was what he wanted, or shut up and appreciate how good he had it. ;-)
That is probably way more information than anyone wanted or needed... But I want you to know I do take your comments and thoughts very seriously! So thank you!
