The Treasure of Lei Fong Wu

Chapter Nine

.

“So,” Zoe said, casually, “you wanna tell me what’s going on?”

“I’ve done something terrible,” Mal said, slouching against the bar.

“What’s that?”

“I’ve . . . I’ve ordered a . . . a Mai Tai – and . . . and there goin’ to serve it . . . I can’t believe I’m sayin’ this . . . they’re gonna serve it . . . in a little ceramic Buddha . . . with a hole in his belly for a straw!” He leaned his head into his hands on the bar in an overly dramatic display of shame. “Just wait. For my blasphemy I’m gonna come back as a possum or somethin’." Just for effect, he let out a sob.

“You’d make a mighty fine possum, Sir. But you’re still full o’ fe hua.”

“Zoe, have I ever led you astray?” he asked, rising again.

“Don’t make me hurt you, Sir.”

“And relax with the ‘sirs’. You’re on vacation.”

“Then let me put it this way: Mal, what in the hell is goin’ on to get five Tong enforcers on your ass when you haven’t done nothin’ but go to the beach, eat, and sleep since you got here?”

“Could you conjure that it ain’t anything I done?”

She thought about it. “No.”

He sighed. “Just trust me. We’re on vacation,” he repeated. “Last night’s little adventure wasn’t nothin’ but an interestin’ floorshow. If I got somethin’ in mind, well, let’s just say it don’t concern your holiday none, and you should put it outa your mind ‘till we leave the world. Dong ma?”

Zoe sighed. “You’re really gonna make me hurt you , ain’t you?”

“I mean it, Zoe. Get some rest. Screw your husband. Drink little fruity drinks with me from the belly of a Buddha and enjoy life for a change. All will become as crystal in the fullness of time.”

“Yeah, it was a regular party talkin’ to security in the middle of the night in my skimpies.”

“C’mon! Lyin’ to cops is fun! ‘Innocent bystanders to a gangland shootout’ – ain’t like we were even involved!”

“Sir – sorry. Mal, we laid out those two proper. But somethin’ has me mystified. Who ended the other two?”

Mal considered. “

Brilliant, as always! Absolutely love the dialog between Wash and River. I can't wait to find out more about the Tong! Oh, and I think I have a new tagline:

"Ni shi wo de biao zv! You are my bitch!"

Wow. You crank these out quick! I second Lexi's bit about the dialog between River and Wash. That's one of the biggest tragedies of the cancellation of the show. With 9 characters, there were SO many unexplored moments between various characters. I think that you pretty much nailed what it would have been like had those two ever had their own scene.

Death to sneering holographic dancers!

More groovy stuff!

I love it!

Very imaginaive, yet authentic to the show. A joy, as always. Must admit, though, that I thought Mal was just a bit too stubborn with Zoe. It was almost uncharacteristic. A lesser writer would have glossed-over that bit, but I trust you to make it make sense later on. Oh, and I love how you're expanding the Firefly universe, too.

there are so TOO many great quotes and possible taglines in this, my favourites are:

“Then you hunt down the nearest possum and hold him to account!”

“If you say the protein sequencer, I might just drown you. Fair warning.”

“Ni shi wo de biao zv! You are my bitch!”

"Ass eating monkey slut!"

"Does your mother know what you do with her underwear?"

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! you got the gift, man!!!

I'm reading this as I watch the Sci-Fi channel's airing of OOG, and they mesh. There's no jarring dialogue, or shockingly distracting change in tone from the show to your story. I think you're doing an amazing job of keeping these characters IN character, while at the same time taking them places that I'm almost certain Joss would have taken them.

Not sure that last bit made sense.

Anyway ... my compliments.

Oh, crap ... I guess I hadn't signed in ...

Again, my compliements.

And, apparently, I can't spell.

It's the story's greatness that's distracting me. That must be what it is. Really.

You got River beating the boards of some futuristic "Dance, Dance Revolution", and then getting Honourable Ancestor Wash "called out" -- you are my hero. I love your stuff.

After reading your first work, I had mild critisism about the "voice" you gave some of the characters.

Congratulations, I formally withdraw that ciritisim. This story fits in perfectly between series and movie, and your handling of each of the characters has been deft, light, and a joy to read. You and Serafina20 are my favorite-est firefly writers ever.

Absofrackinglutely fabulous. Brilliant. This story totally rocks, as did your last! You have perfect pitch with these characters' voices.

I love me some River and Wash, it just breaks my heart to teeny tiny pieces that we didn't get years and years of this show. Your fic is the next best thing, though. Keep it coming, pleeeze!!

IMHO River is the most fascinatingly complex character written since Buffy. Actually, Buffy plus Willow plus Drusilla.

Lol! I loved the interplay between Wash and River - absolutely picture perfect. And one thing that hasn't been mentioned? I think you did an expert job combining the "nuttiness" of River with a typical teen. I haven't seen that done too successfully in the Firefly fics I've read. She's still a teenager - yes, a crazy killer psychic, too, but still a teen. You did an excellent job showing that side of her! BTW, I like your Wash as well - I like when people bring out new dimensions of the Wash character, and I could see him taking down a kid like that in a computer sim. Plus, he played the "grownup" with River. Niiice. ;)

Book and Jayne's interaction last chapter

"all I’m seein’ is you with that ‘Zoe, don’t worry!’ expression you used on me the time you took me behind enemy lines and stole a battle tank.”

That made me laugh 'cause I could SO imagine that expression :-)

And the entire Wash and River part. We never really got to see them interact in canon and it always pained me because Wash seems like the kind of person who could get along with River. I love the way they get along here, Wash happy to treat her like a person, River-the-teenager finding enough likeness in him to be able to be 'normal' for a bit. Wonderful. It also shows that Wash could become a great parent if he wants it...

I'm so glad I saved reading this story for during my holiday! Time to properly enjoy it now :-)

Cheers,
Arwen
