Chapter Twenty-Eight

Simon waited patiently for Dr. Rendell in his lab – what was left of it. While it had been ages since Simon had been in a real laboratory, it was obvious to his unpracticed eye that several major pieces of equipment were missing. What was left was mostly minor things, and several places had large containers of lab supplies stacked up for what had apparently been months. Maybe years. This wasn’t a working lab any more, it was a glorified storage closet.

Simon knew that Dr. Rendell was being relentlessly prepped by Dr. Romano for the interview, but he didn’t care. As exciting as it was to meet the man most directly responsible for the birth of the Reavers, he was far more excited about the possibility of curing River’s brain. Hopefully his desperate attempt to bribe Romano would produce the insight he needed to undertake the process – if nothing else, it would point out the direction of his future research.

Finally the door to the lab opened and a haggard looking man in a shabby lab-coat ambled in. DR. RENDELL was stenciled on the coat, with GROUP THREE PROJECT LEADER below it. Below that someone had taken a permanent marker and added MAD SCIENTISTS UNION LOCAL 781 and a crudely drawn cartoon of a psychotic-looking lab mouse, complete with bulging cranium. At least he had a sense of humor.

“Dr. Rendell,” he said, standing and bowing formally. Rendell returned the bow with a minimum of formality. “I’ve been looking forward to meeting you.”

“Likewise,” Rendell said, smiling. For a man whose head was on the proverbial chopping block, he seemed much too at ease. Simon realized that the man was serious – he was looking forward to this. “I’ve been wondering when you would show up. I’ve been waiting for you for more than a decade, now.”

“I . . . beg your pardon?” Simon said.

“Inspector, I killed thirty million people. Someone was bound to notice, eventually.”

“You seem pretty cavalier about the whole thing, Doctor,” Simon said, warily.

“I’

Since I had y'all's attention, and many went back and re-read recent chapters, thought I'd go ahead and throw another one out there.

A big, meaty, juicy one. Enjoy.

You certainly got my attention. And it was big and juicy. Can't wait for the next one!

OMG you better not make us wait long after leaving us with this cliff hanger.

Wow, just, ...wow. Quite the ethical dilemma to put a genius like Simon in, and if he wasn't anti-Alliance before, he is down to his soul level now. Masterfully detailed as to the why and how of Reaver creation topped with a perfect and vitally current morality tale for all. But my absolute favorite part, and a shiny moment in the history of FF fanfic, was the sheer certainty in Simon's mind that River really saved him. I am in awe of your genius and vision in world affairs and the human juorney. Thank you for this.

You've presented an interesting take on the impact that River's existence had on Simon's development. Obviously it's clear on the surface how her rescue derailed and redirected his path, but the thought that it went all the way back to childhood is intriguing.

A question about The Pax and the Reavers as it's presented here: If The Pax had to be continually administered in order to remain effective, then why did the limited time of exposure on Miranda permanently change those who became Reavers? And also, (and this would be a question arising from the BDM and not just your story) if exposure to The Pax was how the Reavers were created then how were additional Reavers created? I'm thinking of the guy in Bushwhacked. Wasn't he originally a human member of the crew on the derelict?

Thanks for posting an additional chapter so speedily. And also for all the thought provoking questions it raised!

Good questions. And they all have answers that will be revealed in time. If you recall, it was mentioned that the aberrations were permanent, but the Pax wears off if you are removed from exposure. The people on Miranda weren't removed from exposure because it was built into the atmo plants.

As far as the Reavers making more Reavers, yes, I have an answer for that too . . . but you have to give Simon something to figure out on his own.

I'll try to get the next one up in a few days. Why does it take so long? Would you believe I have an agent, now?

Congrats on the agent, hopefully that means other good things for you then as well.

My my... you've been a busy man! Fantastic, as always.

If you have an agent, does that mean that some of these stories could get published?

StA... you never disappoint! This is indeed a juicy chapter, and many thanks for serving it up with just a hint of "imminent violence."

Congrats on the agent!... apparently your "tome on relationships" was well received (I hope anyway).

Getting another pitcher of "beverage du jour" in anticipation of the "thrilling heroics."

Keep flyin',

StA- What DID we do to deserve two chapters in such a short time? Cause whatever it is, I wanna do it some more!

Congrats on the agent!

Thank you soooo much for another great chapter!

Note to self: To make exposition awesome, ask ScrewtheAlliance for pointers.

The secret origin of the Reavers, Miranda et all reads exceptionally well. It's back story, but that's not something you really realize when reading the chapter itself.

Plus, I likes the Simon character insight. Go River, making Simon not evil/snob/like Mom!

Yeah, like that! (*SIGH!*)
